Hi all, I often struggle with what colours to use. So I dive into colour theory, read a lot, watch videos. It's hard for me to understand how colour works. And I ended up with a pinterest post where someone shared a polychomos colour wheel they made, unfortunately I cannot give credit because I found no name.
So, based on that colour wheel, I made my own and modified it. I'm not sure if the colours are all in the right place, but it makes sense, they're sorted by hue, value and saturation, I've also put the shades of grey in the wheel, in the place that makes sense to me, I could be wrong, if you think differently let me know.
I often find something that helps me a lot, so I decided to scan my modified template and share it with my wonderful reddit community so you can use it on your own.
I had no idea that a brown was a dark orange, or a dark red, or a yellow, or even a green. It also helped me to group the colours in my head into orange, red-orange, orange-red and so on.
The link to my reddit post:

7- how often do you use references?
not for doodles or quick sketches but pretty much every “finished” peice you see has multiple references
10- Are you confident about your art?
Yes and no. For years I wasn’t at all- i thought i was getting worse- but let me tell you for other ppl planning on applying to art school- getting my portfolio reviewed helped my confidence a lot! Getting told by experts that my art is good and i should continue with it really made me feel better about it!
18- Answered! (I think)
29- For traditional artists- how you do you usually start on a big peice?
depends on what im doing! I’ve explained my comic process a bit but the rundown is- mark margins, gather references online and have them open on my ipad, script and break down panel layout using a compass, french curve and ruler- and then I’m ready for sketching! I sketch first with a colored pencil- then graphite. These days i’m using a pink pilot color eno mechanical pencil in 0.7 and Uni Kuru toga mechanical pencils in both sizes 0.5 and 0.3 with 2b lead- but genuinly thats bc im a snob abt art supplies- I find any colored pencil works- even non erasable ones- its easier for me to break down shapes and correct proportions with two sketches! as for watercolor paintings- my other favorite traditional thing- I sketch with an oil based red colored pencil (i usually buy a bunch of the same color red of faber castel polychomos) and then I cover the whole painting with a color wash of Pink, yellow, and aqua before laying down my flats. It helps balance the colors in my opinion!

Ok so I've already asked you this question in my stories. But here's a better pic of my latest watercolor piece. So hopefully here you can count more colors. So how many of them do you see? 🌈 Using watercolors by @nevskayapalitra and some colored pencils by @fabercastellglobal Ever since I bought my very first set of polychomos I'm asking myself why the hell did I waited so long?! Seriously, if you're a big color lover and work in watercolor technique, just add some pencils to your artwork and BAM (!!!) it'll start to look like a rainbow😬 P.S. this piece is my entry for "draw this in your style" . . . #traditionalart #contemporaryart #portrait #popsurrealism #beautifulbizarre #young_artists_help #watercolor #fabercastell (at Saratov, Russia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv4oklRBgpn/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=u3se50jqz9bt

To rant about colored pencil comparisons
ZOMG I compared “cheap” Crayola to “luxury” Luminance! Let’s compare Prismacolor Premiere to Faber Castel Polychomos. Why do people say this brand is so good when it doesn’t work in my coloring book? Ugh! I hate these pencils and so should you!
Where did I go wrong?
Because you compared “cheap” to “expensive” but only looked at the price.
With higher end artist brands there is a price point of, let’s say $1 per pencil, for a reason because you get what you pay for with many of them. To properly compare Crayola or some other mass produced brand you’ll get better results going with another brand’s student or “studio” line. Sergeant Art knows it’s not meant to be in the same category as anything from Derwent. The only proper comparison for the top line of one brand is the top line of another.
You tried to compare wax to oil
They are not at all meant to be the same thing. Real well made oil based pencils perform different than wax. Oil pencils are made to layer more. Wax ones will bloom after so long. You’ll never get a fair comparison unless the pencils are formulated similarly. But don’t compare Derwent Soft Drawing to anything else unless it contains clay.
You compared hard to soft
Some pencils are made for fine lines and some are made to spread on good and thick. Prismacolor Premiere, Derwent Coloursoft, and Soft Drawing are at one end of the pressure spectrum, Verithin and Derwent Artists/Studio are at the other.
You compared a craft brand to an art brand
You used the wrong paper
If an art brand not marketed for coloring books looks like shit it’s probably because the paper is shit. Smooth coloring books and paper used to print pages off the computer are usually too smooth and lack the tooth/texture of an art paper. Get yourself something that’s called sketch or drawing, and by a company that makes art papers even if it’s their student line, and then see what you get. Or get a paper specifically made for colored paper.
You’re coloring wrong
Are you constantly breaking points and resharpening? Does coloring make you hand hurt? Dafuque are you doing? Don’t listen to anyone tell you how to hold your pencil, hold it in a way you feel comfortable. And stop pressing so hard, you aren’t grinding wheat in to flour. Many colored pencils are meant to be built up in layers. You might not even need solvents. Literally, lighten up.
But if you can’t help but press hard then look in to a “hard” pencil like a Verithin or Derwent Studio. They’ll take more of a beating.
And if you like the blending you get with solvents try watercolor pencils. But use the right paper with them too.
You used them wrong
If you only want to use the pencils in coloring books and crafts then only use them for that. If you only want to make artwork then only compare them in artwork. Just swatches do not a comparison make. Something that looks great in a swatch might not layer how you want and something that makes beautiful art might fall flat in a swatch. Do something, do several somethings with the pencils. First impressions are all fun and well but don’t be too quick to pass something by or give it a second chance.
Going back to wax and oil, if you’re not familiar with one you need to learn how to use it. I don’t do the same type of layering with the thicker waxes as I do with the oils. I know the craft brand is only good for so long but it otherwise does okay. I wouldn’t take the “nice” pencils near the coloring books. The coloring book pencils aren’t going to be used for the “nice” art.
