I've just come to the conclusion that I, apparently, use my altar space..... differently than others.

I've seen a lot of posts recently that discuss altars and their uses and these posts always feel.... alien to me... as do most discussions I see being held amongst other pagans in social circles.

The altar in my home is not my work space, its not a ritual area (exept giving of offerings, but perishables normally go straight outside), its not a meditation center, its not MY SPACE.

For me, the altar is an area I have handed over to the deities represented there. I maintain it for them, sometimes I decorate it with things I think they may enjoy to be surrounded by when they care to spend time there, but it is THEIR SPACE. The most I "intrude" on it is that I keep my sacred tools there (my divination tools and when I'm not wearing it my devotional necklace).

This seems to make me odd to some degree, because I'm not going to do (the rare and awkward) ritual activity in the gods house unless it is LIKE LIFE OR DEALTH. It would be rude to force* them to attend my ritual by busting up in their space and demanding their attention, if they wish to pay attention to me when I preform an activity (for them or otherwise) they will.

*I use force, but since they are not omnipresent they may not even actively be in that space at any given time, but it certainly still seems intrusive and rude

A’ah, Iah, or Yah was a student of Thoth. Iah became associated with the moon, was a patron of pupils and students, and was the god who created the calendar. In some myths, it is Iah who Thoth bets with to earn the five epagomental days so Nut could have her children- Osiris, Set, Horus, Isis, Nephthys.

Offerings could consist of moonstone, moon imagery, pens and paper, ibis and/or falcon imagery. You can honor him by becoming a student yourself or meditating under the cresent or full moon.

Signs could consist of falcon or ibises- whether the animal is physically present or it is an increase in imagery. Signs could also consist of wanting to learn, wanting to become a student, or a call to research about the moon.

Hermes is so good. I did a devotional act of taking the bus for him today and there was this very old lady I saw on the bench and I sat down next to her. She asked me for the time and we struck up a conversation and it lasted for almost an hour and ended with us exchanging numbers and she gave me a kiss and a hug goodbye I wanna cry

I found a butterfly charm hidden in the dirt on the way back from class and then a couple hours later I was on Etsy and this girl I followed just created a Psyche bracelet with a very similar butterfly charm on it.

Do any other hellenic polytheists have any advice with dealing with death irt our beliefs? My old boss has passed from suicide and Im not sure how to deal with it. Is there a God I can commune with to help with the grieving process?

Why hello! Of course, I have plenty of ressources. And you're in luck, because I've gathered a few of these ressources in previous posts. All I'll do is list these three posts below, then give you a few ideas on where to start learning about norse paganism.

My little introduction to norse paganism (where to start, etc)

Books (a few favorites)

Youtube channels (inclusive ones!)

Now, I'll dive a little deeper just for the sake of clarity. I really should make a masterpost of norse pagan resources, at some point. First of all, there'll be a difference in actual sources depending on the type of information you're looking for. If you're looking for a more objective overview of norse paganism, I suggest looking into works of historical research that concern the ancient germanic tribes and Scandinavian peoples' spiritual practices. They're a great way to start, since they're basically the foundations of modern "heathenry". Nordic Religions in the Viking Age by Thomas A. DuBois, Neil Prince's The Viking Way: Magic and Mind in Late Iron Age Scandinavia, the sagas (a few of them are listed here), Tacitus' Germania, and the Prose and Poetic Eddas are good examples of historical sources to learn from, although the last three are very old and obviously to be taken with a grain of salt. Now, if you're looking to learn about neo-paganism and the modern practice of heathenry, books like The Way of Fire and Ice are well indicated, although books on neo-paganism are addressed especially to norse pagans and are thus a lot more subjective and centered around actual, hands-on practice. As for websites, let me list my three go-to’s down here.

Norse Mythology for Smart People, which compiles lots of concise and clear information on multiple topics surrounding ancient scandinavian cultures, myths and beliefs.

Northern Tradition Paganism, a website centered around neo-paganism and that regroups loads of online shrines dedicated to norse deities.

Völuspá.org, which I always recommend to people who are interested in reading the Eddas. It basically compiles translations of the Eddas, along with notes.

These are just a few ideas on where to start learning about norse paganism, though I hope they can help lead you to more sources of information. Have fun!

Johnathan Kirsch is an American attorney and writer with a BA in Russian and Jewish history from University of California, Santa Cruz. This and other works by the author are centered around religion, the Bible and Judaism.

4/5 on Fluff vs. Serious Study

This book is factual and informative, but falls just short of the highest score for a serious studier as this author chooses to prioritize the accessibility of their work to readers of all levels over source dropping. Notes for all chapters can be found at the end of the book as opposed to the bottom of each page.

4/5 on Easy reading vs. Dry

This author took great pains to make this material could be read and enjoyed, even by those not used to reading historically focused texts. With that said it IS still heavy reading and not recommended for those who do not enjoy the subject.

5/5 UPG vs hard evidence

The author keeps all of their information to historical facts with no personal theories, hypothesis or interpretations put forward.

Summary

This text is an informative and well written depiction of the transition inside of the Roman empire from polytheism to monotheism. Covering such subjects as theological disagreements within early Christianity, why Christians were "persecuted" by the state while Jews were not, and how Christianity grew in popularity among the population of the Roman empire and why polytheism fell out of favor.

Going back to my previous ask I looked into this person and she has a real stick up her ass when it comes to Christianity don’t believe I’ll show you the proof

And those are just two screenshots of a post of a mega rant on how bad Christianity (which is full of misinformation and emotionally Driven arguments mind you) and she blocks responses from critics not because of harassment but because their Christian I think that should say enough on who where dealing with

Sounds about right, lol. Looks like a mixture of bad history, terminally online political views, and good old, "I saw a Church with a donation line on TV, ahhh!" like asking for donations isn't a universal thing in our digital age. In general, your local Church isn't a store, of course they're going to ask for money both to live-off and give to charity.

Also, I'm no expert on history but it's kind of funny that they're claiming that the Church (confusingly conflated with direct acts of God) tried to destroy pagan cultures when Christians recorded Norse, Greek, Roman, etc writings, including their myths. Seems counterintuitive to erasing a culture.

That's not me saying that there weren't conflicts between the two, of course there were. But Christians weren't mounting an intensive effort to erase the history of polythiesm. The most they did outside of largely political wars (Spanish vs Aztecs for example) in the way of "destroying pagan cultures" is convert certain temples like the Roman pantheon into Churches.

I hope they overcome whatever anger issues they would appear to have. And again, rather reminiscent of my joke about Neil Gaiman that they were so offended by.

Magic Mirror Office Harmony Spell

Came across this in my own research and I really enjoyed it because most spells seem lunar based but this is perfect for a solar witch like me!

“A magic mirror may be used to counteract jealousy, backstabbing, and general negative energy: the proverbial evil vibes. This spell requires a bright, sunny day. Although it is a Chinese-derived spell, it may be understood in the context of the Egyptian spirit Sekhmet, who both heals and destroys with laser beam solar rays.

1. Bring a small round mirror to the scene of the crime or the place of misery. Ideally, this is a mirror that can fit into the palm of your hand, for utmost discretion.

2. Slowly, without drawing undue attention to yourself, circulate throughout the room, with the mirror in your hand, reflecting everything in the room for at least several seconds. Include individuals, too, if you feel this is necessary. This spell removes malevolent energy and intent: it causes no harm. You are essentially vacuuming negative energy out of the room and people.

3. The mirror will store these reflections. When you’ve completed collecting reflections, face the mirror downwards or wrap it in dark fabric.
