Behold: A rant on this first day of the month of overpriced rainbow themed everything...

I mean, happy Pride month everyone!!!

But...

I have said this before and I will say it again and again unto my dying breath. The world we live in is coloured in every shade of gray you could ever imagine and things are very rarely just black and white.

But all those variegated shades of gray cannot exist without the plain simplicity of black and white. Which is to say that there are some things about which there are no ifs, buts or maybes. No special allowances or extenuating circumstances that will lighten the black, or darken the white.

And one of them is this simple fact:

If you do not stand actively against something or someone when you have the freedom and the ability to do so — then you stand for it or with them.

I can hear the collective opening of mouths now. The justifications and reasonings. The but sometimes' and maybe this' and what ifs.

But stop.

Go back and read that again. If you do not actively stand against a thing, whatever or whoever it may be, *when you have the freedom and ability to do so*, then you stand for and with it and them.

Do those white lies and soft truths you tell yourself to make looking the other way seem more palatable suddenly taste as stale on your tongue as they do every time I have heard them before?

A little like beer soaked cigarette butts in an overflowing ashtray? Bitter and rancid and stained a particularly disgusting shade of brown that it is impossible to get any other way?

This; ladies, gents and assorted folx — is the hill upon which I will die a thousand deaths.

On this matter (and a very few others) there is not one single molecule of gray to be found anywhere.

You might want to say this is my personal opinion. But it is in fact the very definition of a universal truth. These two things **ARE** mutually exclusive. You cannot be both for a thing and against it when you are free and able to choose one or the other. Your lack of choice, is in fact, a very tangible choice. How's that for irony?

It's maybe also a little ironic that I've chosen the first day of the most colourful month of the year to draw my line in the sand (yet again) about the not grayness of certain things. Or fitting perhaps.

For who has suffered more at the wilful choosing of selective gray than people of colour and the rainbow mafia?

And now for the question and answer portion of this message. Will you finally choose, once and for all? Pick whichever side of the divide and defend proudly that choice, come what may?

I hope so.

And I also hope that if you continue to choose to look away, to explain how complicated it is when it is everything but — then I hope the consequences of your inaction rest so heavily on your soul that you never again know peace...in this life and those that follow.

Here's the truth about transphobes: if gender affirmation surgeries were pristine, blood-free, scar-free, magical transformations, they would STILL try to scare you out of getting them.

Getting pins in a broken leg is gruesome, too. But isn't it worth it once the leg heals?

I love my scars. They're stories told in skin. Here's where I broke up a dog fight. This one's from a gun. Here's one from an Offspring concert. Here are the ones I got in exchange for a life without dysphoria. My scars celebrate my life and remind me of lessons I've learned.

So, too, with my graft. Every day I can look at it and remember that I made it. That I am made whole. That I am free.

I don't hide it when I go out in public. I am not ashamed. Let everyone who sees me know that I am a self-made man.
