Realms of Whitmore - Komorebi

From the foam of the Sea, the Sky creates clouds, From the clouds in the Sky, the Mountain creates snow, From the snow on the Mountain, comes life. Until all is washed away to become foam of the sea once more

A long time ago, Mama Komorebi was lost near the peak of the Mountain with her two newborn twins. Exhausted, hungry, and annoyed with her babies' wailing, she called out for help.

The mountain whispered to her, promising her rest and her children's safety. Mama Komorebi laid upon the comforting snow.

As she rested, the Mountain gathered an avalanche and blanketed Mama Komorebi while she slept. The snow carried her children all the way to the river valley.

In the valley lived Mother Bengal, who had had three babies of her own just the season before, but only one had survived the winter.

One day, Mother Bengal found her daughter playing with two human babies in the reeds. She looked around, but could not find their mother.

And so Mother Bengal adopted them as her own. She named them Kamira and Kamiran meaning "fortunate" in the Bengal Tongue.

As Kamiran and Kamira aged, they grew too large for Mother Bengal's home. Mother Bengal regretted not being able to provide for them any longer, but the twins new they must journey to the Human Village to learn to build a home of their own.

The night before their arrival, the forest spoke to the Village's Sage through the dancing of the light from the setting sun amongst its leaves. "Twins" the light on the ground spelled.

Expecting babies to be born, the village was surprised to be met with two strangers at the gate the following morning. They took introduced themselves and explained the purpose of their visit. The villagers celebrated their coming and named them the Komorebi Twins.

When they returned they built a home of their own and invited Mother Bengal and all of their cat brothers and sisters to live with them.

It became known as The Palace of Bengal.

Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages is a 2012 jukebox musical styled as a comedic film involving the interweaving storylines of several artists trying to make it big in the rock music scene. The film is built around 1980s rock featuring songs from bands like Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Europe, and more.

What are the social aspects within the film’s narrative that align with the film’s songs?

The film is set in 1987 Los Angeles. As mentioned in the text "rock and roll, the first new wave of pop music, appeared then as a label which certainly seemed to be new to the mainstream, but its success has to be understood along social lines: white appropriation of Black music, marketing youth lifestyles, and encouraging teen consumerism" (7).

This wave of pop music was categorized by the social base it addressed. In Rock of Ages a small town girl Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) meets city boy Drew Boley (Diego Boneta) on the Sunset Strip as they try to launch their musical careers. The entire soundtrack utilizes rock from the 80s which was an extremely controversial period of music for its time leaving audiences heavily divided. This disparity between supporters and haters of the music is depicted in the film pinning rock listeners and churchgoers against each other.

Building up to the 80s and lasting throughout the decade, rock was criticized for explicit lyrics, themes of rebellion, and references to drugs use, violence, and sexual content. This created widespread paranoia among parents, religious groups, and conservative organizations about the impact of listening to this music. There were certain bands like Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden that raised concerns for a spread of Satanism. Rock, more so than anything, was known for challenging traditional social norms and values like gender roles and sexual morals. Artists like Prince and Madonna are known for these kinds of provocative lyrics and performances.

The songs within the film are emblematic of a period of rebellion, a genre dedicated to challenging norms and establishing its own realm of music. Songs like "I love Rock and Roll," "Wanted Dead or Alive," "I Want to Know What Love is," and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" are all emblematic of societal reflections imposed onto the characters within the narrative. Catherine Zeta-Jones' character Patricia Whitmore is the film's main antagonist in her disdain for rock music. But quickly, through seduction of a famous musician, she is quickly swayed away from hatred and into a total state of enamor.

The music also serves to explore the faults of the rock industry as well by exploring all avenues of glitz, glamor, and obstacles.

How do the historiographies of previously recorded songs inform audience relationships with the musical’s narrative and performers?

As aforementioned, the history of rock not only permeates the soundtrack but the narrative as well. Though paranoia surrounding rock music came from conservative and religious groups fearing and overtaking of Satanists, many famous rock musicians and bands struggled with substance abuse. The star of the film, Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) is a mirror into the lives of former rock stars struggling with the weight of their fame. Throughout the film he goes in and out of sobriety, though for the most part he remains absurdly intoxicated especially while performing.

The text discusses how music integrates itself with culture by influencing attitudes, fantasies, politics, and listening communities (7) and that it was much "easier to describe rock's style negatively - to describe what it wasn't" (8). Because rock was new, it was perceived to be threatening, especially because it was powerful. In the film specifically the characters revolve their lives around the music as if their existence depended on it.

Each character has their own relationship to the industry which are uniquely expressed through different rock artists and bands. Whilst picketing Stacee Jaxx and rock music in general, Patricia Whitmore (Zeta-Jones) tells the rock fans to hit her with their best shot, superbly vocalizing Pat Benatar's epic 1980 single.

When Sherrie struggles to make it big she lands herself a job in a strip club where she and the rest of the dancers harmonize alongside Mary J. Blige for a version of "Anyway You Want It."

But even those who fear the music at the beginning of the film learn to love it by the end.

What musical genre/style drives the film’s score, and how does the genre/style (re)define the film as a musical?

Rock music is the SOUL of this film. It is the only music included which I think really defines the heart of the narrative and the power behind the battle of fighting for the music, as well as everyone's individual career. This influence is in the HAIR, their CLOTHES, their MAKEUP, and their connection to each other.

In order to examine the genre of the film that is inspired by the music, I want to just showcase what these artists looked like and how they performed their art.

To really capture this energy wouldn't have been possible for the film for what it intended to be as the songs have a bit more of a pop influence for the film, which I would argue makes the music more digestible in order to reach a larger audience. However, I believe keeping the songs in the same style would have created a more realistic tone for the film.

When we make Alternate universes, we need to break the original version down before constructing the AU we desire. Yes. This is what this AU is about. Except it is left alone in the constant state of WORK IN PROGRESS. However, to the characters, they are a catastrophe.

Jumps from AU to AU, timelines to timelines; copying/stealing codes from other Sarvente to save his own — that including leaving the other Sarvente dead.

Comes together with Hex. An angel with only ONE wing, and because of that, he is stucked in the mortal realm as you cannot fly with only one wing. Holds an immerse hatred towards demon and NEVER let him find out you are a demon. Very affectionate and swore to protect the people he loves with all he had. An extremely determined person, he will never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna turn around and desert you.

When the phone rings, it's the landline. Rick shoots off the couch and races for it, beating both Pat and Barbara in different areas of the Whitmore-Dugan home.

The old fashion wall-phone in the kitchen gets detached, Rick sinking into a kitchen chair as the cord gets tangled in his hand. His heart races as static and wind greets him over the line. But then, then, crackles through her voice.

"Hello? Hi, can you hear me?"

"Beth? I hear you." He grips the cord. "I hear you. It's Rick."

Courtney runs down the stairs. "Was that her?"

The line goes static again and Rick shushes her with a firm hand shooing gesture and hard disproval of being interrupted. "Beth? Are you okay?"

"Hi Rick. I'm okay," she confirms. Rick finally lets himself relax. It's been five days since her last contact in the shadow realm. Five days since Rick camped himself in Courtney's living room upon realizing it was the only secure line her attempt at calls somehow went through.

The wind howls in the background. Rick can't imagine it. Has no idea how Beth could even last this long. She'd been there for over two weeks. Dr. McNider still out of reach and with The Shade's deteriorating health unable to get back.

"Can I please talk to Pat?"

Rick doesn't want to pass it over.

"....Rick? Hello?" There's some rustling, and Rick thinks it's her cape flapping behind her. "Are you there?"

"I'm here." Rick swallows tersely. "I'll get him."

"Thank you."

Rick waves at Courtney to come back and instructs her to find Pat. Courtney turns around and looks at Barbara who shakes her head. "He just left for the garage."

Courtney throws on her jean jacket. "I'll get him!"

A warm dose of relief settles his nerves once more that this buys him a few extra minutes to talk to her. Rick isn't proud of it though.

"What about you?" Beth says. There's something else as well but her connection drops and he misses it. Rick covers his other ear with his hand to block out background noise.

"What?"

"....Are you doing okay?"

Oh. He chokes on a laugh and swallows on his no. He doesn't want to alarm her, but it's been two and a half weeks, and Rick is starting to unravel without her near. Beth soothes him in a way he can't describe. He misses her. He needs her. Even his fighting game is off without her equilibrium. Rick always used to see himself as the one Beth needed to talk to. But she's fine out there, alone.

He's the one that needs to hear her to get him through hard days.

"...Rick?"

"I'll be fine."

Beth sighs. "Rick. Rick, don't worry this much. I'm coming back. I just...I don't know when."

"Can you promise me something?"

"Yes," comes her instant reply. Rick's hand is now completely tangled in telephone cord. He glances at Barbara nervously, who takes the hint and walks out the room.

"Promise to keep trying to call?" Courtney and Pat walk in the front door. He ducks his head, and speaks low. He hates that he knows why his voice cracks at his next words. "Don't let me lose you too."

at a young age, emerson exhibited traits one would call extraordinary. she took her first steps at six months, spoke articulately at three years, and stealing her foster sibling’s chemistry textbooks at four years to read under the covers. 

enter kathleen whitmore, the powerhouse of a woman who would bring young emerson into her family campaign. they fell right in line with parker and sutton, a middle child without the dreaded syndrome. emerson kept after parker as if life was a competition, but they never let sutton fall behind. piano, painting, ballet –– anything that allowed sutton to tag along, the pair seemed inseparable. 

emerson could be classified as gifted. academics came naturally and by the time they were nine, they were enrolled in accelerated classes. at fifteen, they graduated high school one full semester before their dear older brother would. spring semester rolled around and emerson was on their way to stanford as a student in the computer science program. while no one was surprised emerson had been accepted, kathleen ensured the enrollment with a few pulled strings behind the scenes. 

four years and another cap and gown later, emerson was graduating summa cum laude, already enrolled in the master’s program. three years later and newly-elected president whitmore was giving the commencement speech at emerson’s hooding ceremony. 

their thesis focused on privacy in the cyber age and dataminr was born. emerson had made a name for herself as an intelligent mind prior to the startup, and having the whitmore name only added to the ease of networking. her work was praised by the likes of mark zuckerberg and tim cook, dataminr’s platform exactly what a couple of tech bros wanted to introduce in their software. dataminr gained national traction after emerson rubbed elbows with the biggest names in tech, and they began giving ted talks and hosting lectures at their alma mater.

kathleen whitmore’s 2020 campaign began the moment she took office in 2016. this time, she enlisted the help of one of her most trusted kids. swing states needed to be secured –– emerson understood the assignment.

they set up a dataminr lecture circuit throughout florida, inviting the governor and their family. emerson was quick to hit it off with the governor’s daughter/son/agender child. they bonded over their adoption stories and were soon exclusively dating. news had yet to drop regarding kathleen’s reelection campaign, but emerson had them too wrapped around her finger for them to notice the timing. she was welcomed into their family, no one knew how convincing of an actress emerson was. they were seen everywhere, tangled up in each other with their partner none the wiser. emerson gained family secrets, confidential information, and a front row seat to subtly push kathleen’s platform onto the unstable political realm that plagued florida. florida went blue in 2020, emerson watching the election results with their family. she’d wait a month before calling off the engagement, faux sorrow and heartbreak on tap.

a few months after that, emerson adopted a mini dachshund whose name is [REDACTED]. the small dog is in attendance at every appearance and interview, often seen sitting in emerson’s lap. many speculated that emerson adopted a dog to cope with being single, but she has vehemently denied that, having to clarify that [REDACTED] was adopted from a litter dropped off at a shelter. [REDACTED] is instagram verified and boasts millions of followers on tiktok.

joining the protection program wasn’t ideal, with dataminr expanding to more high-profile clients –– but schmoozing with royalty and plugging dataminr as the perfect wartime intelligence was too tempting to pass up.

exes on good/bad terms –– emerson doesn’t have a heart and uses people to her advantage. they can say and do all the right things to make others believe their feelings are true, but in the end, they’re left unscathed.

Queen Margaret’s Coronation: Foreign Guests Arrive at the Abbey - Part 1

And the day is finally here! The coronation of our new Queen will soon start and guests have started to arrive at the Willow Creek Abbey! 

The first couple to arrive were HRH Crown Princess Amelia of De Villiers and her husband HRH The Duke of Clermont. The Crown Princess’ parents were already in Willow Creek attending the funeral of the late King Henry, and now HRH visits the realm for the first time to attend the Queen’s coronation. @royaldevilliers

Following Crown Princess Amelia were HM Queen Sofia of Windasia and her husband HRH Prince Consort Darien. The couple has already been to Willow Creek for King Henry’s funeral as well, and it seems the people of Willow Creek is already in love with the couple as they cheer during their arrival. @wa-royal-tea

Next up was HM Queen Eleanor of Elvaria. Her Majesty has already visited Willow Creek several times and she’s very much adored by the royal family. Her granddaughter HRH Princess Annaliese is also attending the coronation but she is part of the Queen’s maids of honor, so she will be arriving shortly. @reigningsims

Arriving next were a new face to Willow Creek, TIM Emperor Napoléon IV of Francesim and Empress Marie-Joséphine. This is the first time Their Imperial Majesties visit the realm and we are all very happy to have them with us on this very special occasion. @empiredesimparte

Following the Emperor and the Empress were TRH Princess Katarina, Countess of Bexley, and Prince Knox, Earl of Bexley of Whitmore. This is the second time HRH visits the coutry. The first time she was accompanied by the Crown Princess, but this time she has been joined by her husband. We are very happy to have the young couple with us as well! @whitmoreroyals

The last two foreign guest to arrive with this group were  HM Queen Mary of Cavalier Cove and her husband HRH the Prince Consort. Queen Mary is actually related to the Queen by blood since Her Majesty is Prince George’s niece. The Queen of Cavalier Cove was given a warm welcome by the crowd since his uncle was very loved by the people of Willow Creek. The couple’s daughters will be attending the coronation as well as maids of honor to the Queen.

After ages of life on Sister Rock, two of Dolphin's descendants rose above all others and into the sky.

Kai L'Aqua enlightened the islands and returned them to Mother Sea's embrace. She tasked herself and her followers to build a Temple in Mother Sea's Honor.

Mother Sea made her appreciation known by striking the nearby beach with a fierce bolt and providing two gifts. Instantly the sand turned to glass under the flash.

On the next day, the second gift arrived the form of two strangers on a steamy tide. They brought with them the knowledge to build Sulitas (small suns). Kai immediately began installing these in the Temple.

Mother Sea returned to the Empress that night and told her one day she would be the Sul in the Sky.

Eternal Sister Rock watched as Dolphin's descendants lived upon her shores. She simmered with jealousy as the Sulanis returned to Mother Sea's embrace.

"Sister Fish," Rock trembled "do as your told."

Fearing the angered Rock's red waters sister fish swam to the shore and asked "Sister, where am I to go?" "I desire to hear your children sing" Sister Rock replied. She then told Fish her nefarious plan.

Sister Fish had many children. Among them were the frogs of Tadpole Falls. These sacred waters were blessed by Mother Sea to provide fertility to those who enter them together.

The frogs sang out to the Empress and her first follower, a man named Sho Miyamoto. The two dove within the waters and were blessed with a baby boy named Keanu.

The evening of Keanu's birth, the frogs called out once more. However, they called upon a different man. Enchanted, Kai and the man entered the falls together.

During this act, Sister Rock trembled and the ground shook. Frighted, Sho grabbed his son and set out to find Kai. "Danger! Faliing water." Sister Rock shouted in return.

Sho followed Sister Rock's advice and found the two in Tadpole Falls. Still entranced by the frogs, Kai gave Sho nor their son any mind.

Sho tried to confront them as Sister Rock coughed with delight spewing rocks across the land.

Her venomous red spit hissed contempt into Sho's ears. "I will provide and protect the child" she said "She is unworthy of your love."

Sho listened. He took their son and to the peak of the mountain and under the canopy Sister Rock provided.

That night Mother Sea scolded Sister Rock and Kai alike with a powerful thunderstorm. "You must carry the burden you've chosen and provide for the descendants of the Moon" she told to Rock.

She then appeared to Kai in her dreams "And your burden will be yours and future generations to bear. For the daughters of the Sun will never find love."

And so, Sho Miyamoto was risen by Sister Rock and the Mother Sea to be the Moon that dotted the night sky- his descendants to forever sworn protection from the land.

The Duke of Greystoke is known far and wide for hosting the best Yuletide house party/grand soiree It’s not just an honor to be invited, but the Revelry (as it is known) has been the cause of not just delicious scandal but also some of the most prestigious wedding matches in the realm. Why, it’s known that the Duke has procured several special licenses for just such an opportunity. 

So join us for this season of love and merriment with the magic of Christmastide.

 As always, I will be reviewing each story individually and since this is a linked anthology I will discuss it as a whole at the end.

Let’s get to the Revelry!

A Mistletoe Kiss Eloisa James

As the youngest of her father’s children, Lady Cressida has long devoted her life to her father, the Duke of Greystoke, and putting on his famous Yuletide Revelry. In fact, it would be more honest to call it Lady Cressida’s Revelry, but with her father dying, Cressida is looking forward to either marrying or retiring to the Scottish Estate in her dowry. But when her father uses the estate to coerce his heir, Viscount Valentine Derham (Val), her dreams are shattered. Worse, he expects her to continue planning the Revelry for her cousin long after he’s gone. What is Cressida to do?

I didn’t love this first entry into the anthology. I found it weak and the romance was far and away the weakest of the lot. Instalove is expected in shorter stories like this, but it felt like this story had the worst case of it. First off, the hero is Elias, Lord Darcy de Royleston... the BFF of Val and also a neighbor of the Duke’s. The Duke in this story is a huge bully and very much the antagonist but he’s almost too over the top. But honestly, my biggest complaint is that I just didn’t buy the relationship between the two leads.

Three Stars.

Wishing Under the Mistletoe Christi Caldwell

Granddaughter to the Duke of Greystoke, Isabelle had long ago given up her dream of marriage to a man of common means when he threw himself into his work to the detriment of everything else in his life -- including her.. Now a talented playwright, Isabelle is called upon to stage the pantomimes and plays at what promises to be her grandfather’s final Revelry. She never expects to be paired up with Cyrus, her former fiance and the man who broke her heart. Nor does she expect to discover that she still has feelings for him ten years on.

I liked this story of a second chance class-difference romance initially but then it swerved into two of my least favorite tropes that still make me gnash my teeth. It is made very clear in the beginning who is at fault for the relationship failing -- Cyrus -- and that Isabelle did everything to communicate with him and even talk with him to no avail. It wasn’t Isabelle’s fault. At all. Which is why I absolutely hated that she said that she was at fault for not communicating with Cyrus. It totally belied what we saw in the prologue. There’s also a public proposal which is something I hate with a passion. The story also requires a heapton of suspension of disbelief to expect that the eldest daughter of an Earl and granddaughter of a Duke would be allowed to marry the son of a stablemaster without so much as blink of an eye. Too much, in fact. In addition, Cyrus is the man of business for Val and the Viscount and future duke seems totally okay with his employee marrying his cousin. I really didn’t love this entry. But I liked it up until the very end.

Two stars.

Compromise Under the Mistletoe Janna MacGregor

Niece of the Duke of Greystoke, Caroline Whitmore has been abandoned all her life. First by her mother, then by her father, and finally by her husband. Unable to be ignored by her husband everywhere but in the bedroom, she flees to London and sets herself up as a patroness of the arts. But now, in order to get the remainder of her inheritance, she has to convince her dying uncle by the end of the Revelry that she and her husband, Stephen, have reconciled. The spark of attraction is still there. But is it enough to rekindle the flame of their relationship.

If this sounds familiar, to the second story with a second chance romance caused by the woman leaving a man who abandoned her for his work, then you are not alone. The Duke of Greystoke is once again a bully for this story (in the previous story he was much more sanguine and kind). However unlike the first and second stories in this anthology, I liked this one. The conflict worked and the relationship felt real and the fake/dating becomes real worked. I liked the fact that attraction had never been their problem... communicating and actually having a relationship that was built on more than sex was. The conflicts worked. The story worked.

Mischief & Mistletoe Erica Ridley

On the verge of being put on the shelf, Louisa Harcourt must make an advantageous match by the end of the Revelry. But thanks to the scandal sheets calling her insipid and bland, this is a challenge. Especially since all Louisa wants to do is be a poet. She feels as though she’s found a kindred spirit in fellow poet, Mr. Ewan Reid, a friend of one of the men she’s supposed to be encouraging, Viscount Valentine Derham. Ewan seems to be the man of her dreams, but he’s harboring a terrible a secret. A secret which could shatter her to her very core.

This story has the most tenuous connection to the rest and I felt it would have been better had it been actually a romance between Val and Louisa... not Louisa and Ewan. First off, I really didn’t like the hero... it’s revealed very early on that he’s not actually a poet, but a scandalmonger and the very author of the scandal sheet which torpedoed her chances of a happy marriage. He’s a bully. Worse, he never comes clean to her until she accidentally reads his notebook after they’ve consummated their relationship. To his credit, he hadn’t promised her marriage. But still, he deceived her and was super dishonest with her. Worse still, I hated the ending of this. It felt way too rushed. And one of the main conflicts... their class-difference... was just waved away with flick of a hand. Additionally, we again get a public grovel and proposal... which is one of my most hated things ever.

Two stars.

Over all, I feel like this linked anthology collection was uneven. First off, the Duke... who appeared in each story varied wildly from story to story. He was a bully and horrid in James and MacGregor’s entries. Kindly but stern in Caldwell’s. And downright nice in Ridley’s (giving his blessing for the heroine to marry his heir). It felt like inconsistent characterization. Additionally, all three of the heroes are good friends of Val, the Duke’s heir. Yet none of them are mentioned in any of the other stories.  Even events, locations, and characters appeared and disappeared as needed. It didn’t feel cohesive. Like there needed to be better communication between the authors or an overarching editor whose job was to make sure continuity existed. It is possible.

Additionally, I felt like the stories needed to be shifted around so that the two second chance romances weren’t right by each other. Additionally, only one story should have had a distant epilogue... since the two that did contradicted each other.

Honestly, I didn’t love this anthology.  Two entries featured tropes I hate... which is a personal thing. But it also needed a better continuity editor, which is a less personal thing.

Averaging everything together this anthology gets... 2.5 stars. Which in the spirit of the season I’ll round up to:

That night was brief, dark, and she didn’t sleep well. As she left the guest room before going to sleep, she heard voices in the living room downstairs. Coming back to her door, she spotted Mal who was standing in the next doorframe, holding on to the handle, and watched her silently. He gave her a little wave with his face expressing nothing.

“Good night”, he said. She blinked and went inside, locked her door and kept looking at it until she fell asleep. Mal, standing ten steps away from her, in the dark corridor, watching her, watching her when she didn’t realize he was, followed her into her dreams.

Every morning he stood at the mirror and looked at himself, and admired. Freedom suited him. Being unknown freshened his attitude. Nobody hunted him, nobody looked at him like at a parasite. People really stopped noticing, at some point, the way they looked at him, and just went on with their condescending hatred, sitting there on their high horses, judging him day and night. Now, they looked at him and only saw what he wanted them to see, and that was the best gift he ever got in his life. Every morning he looked in the mirror, excited, and tried to guess what nice things he’d hear. Mal, you look good today. Great idea, Mal, you rule. Mal, what would I do without you?

The only thing that didn’t change was the way she looked at him. He admired himself even more for that, for striking that perfect balance and still having it, ah, screw this, he admired them both. Her, for being true to him even though she didn’t know she’s being loyal. And himself, for still being him –

“Kai Parker”, he said to his mirror every morning, and as he watched the mouth move together with the words he heard, it reassured him. He did it every day like a prayer, so that he himself wouldn’t forget. After everything he’s been through, reminding himself who he was seemed like a logical precaution. He couldn’t imagine staying Mal Osbourne forever. Having an apartment that’s in one place, having insurance and a job – that mortified him. All these things that settle you as a human – ew, scary. Pretending to be human was only as good as the food he could get.

What if that what it took though? As he looked at himself in the mirror that morning, standing in one of the Salvatore’s many bathrooms, he was listening to the house. It was seven in the morning, and he never needed more than three hours of sleep anymore. Sometimes even less. He was just so full of energy ever since he came back. His walking battery was at a hand’s reach. She was still asleep next door, and he could hear her erratic, restless breathing. Might as well peep inside and give her better dreams before going to work. Bon Bon is having an unhappy breakfast downstairs and clings her spoon on the walls of the cup every time. She always clings her spoon on the walls of her cups, and it drives Kai crazy. Frankly, back when they were in the prison world, there was a point at which he asked himself whether there was a time loop and Bonnie Bennett entered his realm when he was a kid and drove him crazy by clinging a spoon against the walls of her tea cup.

Salvatore brothers created constant humming talking in the library in their low voices. Elena was making coffee, and the delicious smell of it crawled down the carpets and penetrated under the doors, making him agitated. Kai and Mal, they both loved a good cup of coffee, although Y/N, both past and present, said it was bad for him because he’s naturally hyperactive. It’s funny how Damon achieved nothing by throwing him into oblivion. He was still the same, only with a different name. She still loved him the same, the same happy flickering in her eyes, from the second she saw him. She said all the same things as before, and it was so easy, so obvious that they were meant for each other it was laughable.

Kai has reached the point at which he thought she’d go with anything he does. Normal people don’t do it. Normal people? They caught him, tied him down, stripped him of his magic and pushed him out of existence.

She wasn’t normal, and she was his.

Caroline said her goodbyes and slammed the door like the psycho she was.

Kai stopped himself. Is he thinking about them with adoration? In an ah, these idiots doing their morning shenanigans and I know them so well way?

He gave himself a frown in the mirror and then couldn’t stop himself from smiling. The only adorable thing here was this young man. Who’s going to work right now, but before, he has to take care of his girlfriend’s nightmares.

He cracked the door open, putting on the cloak of invisibility just in case – house was still full of vampires. Stepping to her bed, he recalled how she tried to call him out yesterday: you were watching me sleep.

Honey, I was doing so much more, he thought.

He kneeled down before the bed and touched her forehead carefully, sucking a bit of magic from her, and returning it straight back with a chant. Touching her was the means to read her mind, and he took a peek of what she was seeing in her bleak dreams. Ever since he went away all the memories of her father got distorted. She lacked what she needed, to be restful about his death. Kai Parker wasn’t in her mind, and consequently, the idea of apathy and peace knowing that he took care of everything was absent, too. Every time he thought about it, about Damon mutilating her mind like that, he got angry.

She sighed deeply, and Kai crept out of the room, closing the door and forgetting to lock it again. He was thinking about coffee.

“Smells so-o good”, he crashed the quiet conversation Elena and Bonnie were having as he entered the kitchen. He put his elbows on the counter, eyeing both girls and thinking about how he would dismember them both right here on the table. Okay, they seemed relatively okay when they weren’t in front of his eyes. Every time he looked into Bon Bon’s eyes, all he could think of was how she stole all his magic and watched as Salvatore dicks were dragging him across the cave to the pit.

“Can I have some, too?”

“Sorry, I’m almost running late. It’s on”, Elena said, and gave Bonnie a look they both thought he didn’t notice.

“What kind of coffee is it?” he asked, circling the counter and watching the coffee pot over Elena’s shoulder. She stepped away, uncomfortable.

“The ordinary…”

“Why are you up so early?” Bonnie demanded. She looked at him bravely, her voice loud and clear. Kai looked at her innocently.

“Bad at sleeping. Really, really bad. I barely sleep, ever, I’m like an anxiety machine”.

He grinned.

“Worried about all those bodies?” she asked coldly. Elena stepped away even more and grabbed on the table, watching them both. Kai sighed, crossing his arms.

“Well, as you know, I’m not huge on empathy… I mean, I’m sure those people were nice and all”. He shrugged.

“All I care about is Y/N to be honest”.

“What happened to Martha Hopps?”

“She’s dead. I’ve moved on”.

He took a big mug off the hanger and started making himself coffee.

“In two weeks?” Bonnie went on. He wasn’t looking at her, hiding a wicked grin. Why couldn’t he ever stop smiling when he interacted with them? It was always so funny. He was afraid he’d start laughing one day and completely blow it.

“Yeah. Her death was so violent, it traumatized me big time, and I kind of disassociated”.

He heard all these words from Y/N in the past life and learned to apply them.

“And Y/N’s still alive, and her ex-crush seems to go round killing everybody, so…”

“Why are you so sure it’s Damon?” Elena asked.

Kai gave her his most serious look.

“I know you’re friends. But take this from a person who’s unbiased: Damon is a violent, unpredictable, cruel perso- vampire. You know he’s done something to Y/N back in November, right?”

He turned to the witch, too, waiting until his words sunk in.

“What do you mean?”

He scratched the tip of his nose.

“She’s certain he’s done something and then took her memories away. She says she’s been feeling very weird for the past seven months”.

He shrugged again like it didn’t matter to him.

“I don’t know, he just seems super freaky, that’s all I’m saying”.

Elena rolled her eyes.

“The only freaky person here is you”, Bonnie snarled. She stopped moving her spoon, and Kai exhaled, relieved.

“You show up out of nowhere and follow her around. And I know you lurk on her, Mal. I’m a witch and I know things”.

“I know you know”.

“And? You wanna explain?”

He cocked his head and took his mug from the counter.

“Nah. I’m not the person you should be concerned about. There’s a killer among you. And it’s not me. Soon your town will be on the lockdown because he kills people in packs. And you worry about me being obsessive over a girl who’s into it”.

Elena’s eyes widened. He smiled.

“She came in on us yesterday”.

Bonnie’s eyes darted to her friend. Elena bit her lip and nodded shortly.

He started gulping his coffee under Bennett’s testing sight.

“Freak”, she said under his breath, and his mood changed to worse. There was no way he’d ever win this one over. He’d better kill her off and stop worrying about it once and for all.

Enzo Caroscio unveils latest design in South Australia

Adelaide’s newest apartment development in Whitmore Square promises to be a sophisticated addition to the city’s southwest.

58 IPARRITYI

Called 58 IPARRITYI, the Kaurna name for Whitmore Square, the boutique mixed-use building will sit on the southwest corner and will have 11 residences and a retail and hospitality precinct at the ground level.

Designer Enzo Caroscio, known locally for his work on the SAHMRI and Bohem apartment complex, said he took inspiration from the creative architecture of the Labyrinth home of Xavier Corbero and Rome’s Palazzo della Civilta’ Italiana.

Caroscio said he wanted to create “highly sculptured and articulated architecture through recessed shadowing and the play of solid versus void”.

The building features setback and stepped upper levels, repetitive and varied window openings, with symmetric arched framed loggias that will be transformed throughout the day by the contrast of shadows passing across at the façade.

“The composition and creative form of the building creates a boutique and sophisticated original addition to Whitmore Square,” Caroscio said.

“From within, we have created homes that feel part of the city with its visual connections to the green square and city skylines.”

Melissa Pisanelli, the director of the developer Studio Simpatico, said she had lived in the city for the past decade and had ensured every aspect of 58 IPARRITYI was carefully considered to enhance city living.

“I adore the village living that the southwest quarter provides, it offers the convenience of city living bundled with a strong sense of community,” Pisanelli said.

“It’s exciting to see so many young couples and families moving into the area, as well as small businesses, and a surge of creative professionals.”

Pisanelli said the complex was designed with these people in mind and would “contribute to the colourful and rich heritage of the square”.

“The building is design orientated with fully functional spaces thoughtfully designed to be lived in,” she said.

The generously sized homes include architecturally designed kitchens with Miele appliances, ducted reverse cycle air-conditioning, large bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, and floor-to-ceiling tiled bathrooms with premium Caroma fittings and fixtures.

“We chose to partner with Caroma for all of our premium fittings and fixtures not only due to quality design and craftsmanship, but its unique heritage in Adelaide”, Pisanelli said.

“The brand is a reminder of the entrepreneurial endeavours of migrants to Adelaide.”

The fittings are not the only aspect giving a nod to South Australia.

Local artists have also been commissioned to provide an artwork work for each level, including a permanent floral installation by Studio Botanic florist Nadia Travaglini, and each of the 23 bathrooms will have a hand-crafted basin by local ceramicist Samantha Faehrmann of Butter and Gravy.

Pisanelli said custom-made oversized arched windows and large Juliette balconies will allow in natural light and promote cross-ventilation to the apartment.

“Architecturally, there is nothing else like it in Adelaide,” she said.

The innovative homes also incorporate large, functional outdoor spaces, with west-facing residences featuring a private ‘loggia’ to provide privacy and shade while framing views of Adelaide’s parklands.

While the apartments will have private car parks, the complex will also house a Mercedes-Benz EQA electric vehicle for the shared use of residents through booking on a private app.

Stargirl, Episode 1: Review

I want my first statement to be that I will potentially never be done screaming about the fact that Sly asking Pat to take the icicle impaled in his ABDOMEN out. Kid geniuses, am I right? 

That aside, I’ve left all my nitpicky feelings out of this review, because all-in-all, I thought this show did really well as a first episode and because Geoff had such a heavy hand in its creation, I’d like to keep a fair and open mind about it.

Because it’s the first thing we see once the text telling us about the Golden Age ends, I liked the take on the Star-Rocket Racer, I loved that it was included right away despite it often being forgotten. To be fair it wasn’t like Courtney drove in comics. On the other hand, watching the JSA die was one of my least favorite things in the episode. If Alan, Jay, and Ted are even dead. But I understand it for a storytelling perspective, along with Pat naming the characters. To anyone who knows the JSA it might feel monotonous, pointing out members that had largely died before Johns took over the JSA in the 90s, but for newcomers, it puts a name to a face, so they can draw back on that name as the series progresses. Some member’s don’t get recognized, however, which is sad. It was only on my second viewing that I realized the Sandman, Wesley Dodds, was dead on the stairs as Icicle descends. Following that, it feels a little strange for Joar — I’m sorry, Jordan — to command Grundy, but I’ll accept it because it’s not entirely outside of the realm of possibility. I’m excited to see how Grundy will be portrayed if/when he reappears. I didn’t care for Sly’s dying speech, in all honesty, it seemed to be meant for a more comedic piece, such as a man retiring, not dying. Maybe that was the purpose of casting McHale and I simply wasn’t the target audience. That’s okay!

The small peek we get into the Whitmore household at the same time was nice. I thought Amy Smart did a wonderful job portraying single, working mom Barbara, who wants her child to be happy even when she has to step out because Courtney’s father doesn’t arrive. 

I loved that Mike was included from the get go in the show. He’s a fun sarcastic brother played well. And the choice to have Barbara from Blue Valley was a good choice, story-wise. The town itself plays up the cult-vibe well, whether this is due to following the comics or to show the weirdness of an outsider looking in, as the Dugan-Whitmore family settles in has yet to be confirmed. Regardless, each actor who flashed a smile and greeted the new members of the community deserves a round of applause. I was pleased that Cindy had her white stripe and the queen bee vibe she gave off. 

The choices for what to include in frames was great! I loved that the pictures, trophies, and boxing gloves included in Courtney’s room were given such attention. Ripped City will haunt me, though. 

I’ve left this to the last because it’s my last big positive for the show: Brec Bassinger and Luke Wilson were great choices for Courtney and Pat. I never paid attention when casting was actually happening, though I was aware that Johns wanted Wilson for the role of Pat. I thought Bassinger did an amazing job portraying a person who really didn’t want to be there but was trying her best, for her mom. The scene where Courtney confronts Barbara but had to backtrack was a great way of showing how much she loves her mom and was willing to do for her. I’m going to just completely ignore the Sly might be Sam Kurtis red herring because I hate Sam Kurtis.

Now for the point that is likely to be poorly received: I dislike the fact that the Cosmic Staff has some semblance of sentience. While I do think it’s fun to an extent, more than that I feel it removes a teenage girl’s autonomy. Courtney doesn’t want to blow up a car but the Staff does, so Courtney — a fifteen year old child — is an accessory to arson. Maybe this is meant to soften some of the harder edges that Courtney had in her solo, but the fact that she’s taken a seat as a chosen one character trope instead of making her own decisions doesn’t sit well with me. 

We have to talk about Henry Jr. In the same vein that the Staff blows up his car because... reasons, the fact that potentially deadly force was used against a teenager is disappointing, as a viewer. Henry Jr. is an asshole, there’s no other way to say it, he’s a bully we may have all seen in some regard in school. When Courtney shoves him, we the viewers know she’s making the move as self-defense. When the Staff blows up his father’s car because he’s being a world class jerk, was that really necessary? I will admit I’m biased in this regard. I’m an adult and, through the course of my life, I’ve been able to grow and look back on my past actions, knowing I can be a better person than I was when I made those choices. I dislike use of excessive punishment against children and teens, because their brains haven’t finished developing and, in some cases, society has failed them, they were simply never taught better. This punishment doesn’t fit the crime, and, while I can see why it was included to bring the Injustice Society back together sooner than was planned, I feel there were better options than this.

As a pilot, with a lot of ground to cover, I feel Stargirl did a good job. Not everyone will come into the show, having read every issue of the JSA and Infinity Inc., and all of the tie-ins and that’s not needed to enjoy the show. I’d give the first episode a solid 3.75 outta 5. I’m interested to see what will come next.

Stargirl Pilot Review

Stargirl - A Breath Of Fresh Air For The Arrowverse

When Oliver Queen traded his soul for an entire multiverse. The fabric of the acclaimed continuity spanning worlds of established DC lore would be affected. One of the ramifications going forward for the shared universe would be the birth and inclusion of new characters that will get their chance to play in the sandbox of the CW and DC universe networks. 

One character who will tread the waters of network relations is the Star-Spangled kid or Courtney Whitmore aka Stargirl. The premise of Stargirl may seem cheesy, and out of place with the crazy assortment of characters and a weak narrative at first glance. However when I actually sat down and watched the pilot. I was completely blown away by highlights such as the camera work; strong cast and the deep narrative. 

In addition to the strong foundation of camera work, and the cast. Stargirl feels like a show from a different generation. It’s one that doesn’t resemble or blend into the overcrowded saturation of the comic book genre. Stargirl feels like a love letter to Smallville with hints of Sam Raimi camp and even Shazam combined with The Flash. I know I’m throwing around big juggernauts in the realm of pop-culture, and media. However, the praise is warranted because of the passion that is evident in the scripts or present in the cast, and even the vision of the director. 

First off to begin Stargirl does a tremendous job of world-building. Whenever shows are released the pilot has a job of grabbing your attention to get you to watch, but the pilot also has to lay down the seeds of what’s to come. By the end of Stargirl, you know the villain’s agenda; you can see the relationship between Bessinger as the lead, and the comedic heart of Luke Wilson as her sidekick, and you also get a taste of what’s to come in about 53 minutes. I don’t know about you but that’s a damn pilot. 

Also not to mention you get a feel of the universe being built before you. Without diving into spoilers, a lot of big reveals are coming, and the serialized nature spanning over the course of 13 episodes is a smart path to travel. 13 episodes is a good starting off point it’s also one that won’t bog down a freshman season from tedious not needed filler episodes. 

I mentioned the camera work of the property. In this new chapter of DC comics the camera feels like a character of its own.  I haven’t felt this way about a project since Daredevil on Netflix. Stargirl feels like I’m watching a 90’s big-budget blockbuster. The shots are perfect; colors don’t drown out a scene. 

Another highlight is the creation of environments that are then brought to life by these once 2-d icons drawn on the panels of comics who are trapped in the white space of life. However with these shows and the concept of bringing such characters to life and giving them an injection of realism. We can actually see their personalities; The lives they endure which unfold into our established pattern of reality and assimilate into our culture. 

In conclusion, Stargirl is a show or property that was paved from the teen-esque atmosphere of Riverdale on the CW, and the heroic storytelling from the mind of Geoff Johns, and the team of DC comics. Which feels honestly feels like a breath of fresh air for the once stagnant Arrowverse. 

Ironically with the departure of Oliver Queen and Arrow. New characters will start to make their long-awaited debuts on the CW, HBO Max, and DC Universe respectfully and that will be a sight to see
