Pretty relevant for what I just posted but yea! Orion takes on a bit of a big brother role in the non-romantic routes. It happens accidentally from his end lmao (if you willingly get close to him, that is).

I’m not the first to observe this, but Choice is important in Undertale, but not in the way you’d think. Aside from the two main routes that the story can go down, most of the time you get options that do not have meaningfully different results. For example, when you talk to Papyrus, it doesn’t matter whether you insult or flatter him, he’ll have a positive, goofy remark either way. This isn’t the back-of-the-box “your choices matter!” divergent storytelling plug that you’d see in a Bioware RPG or “Interactive Storytelling” choose-your-own adventure. No, there is a single path that you’re being pushed towards and led down, and a lot of the apparent choice in the game is just obscuring that fact.

No, choice in Undertale is not significant because it lets you unlock bonus content, but rather because forcing the player to make conscious decisions is significant in itself. I think the best example of this is comforting Asriel at the end of the game.

If you choose not to comfort Asriel, nothing happens. There is no alternative dialogue, he isn’t angry with you, and the game just skips to the next part of the interaction. The game will not reward you, even negatively, for choosing not to comfort Asriel. Nor will it punish you. But by presenting the choice at that moment, it gives you ownership over what happens.

You—the player—decided to forgive him. You—the player—decided that he deserves comfort and understanding.
