This take place just after The Tower and before the Holiday Special.

Fear of public speaking has long been said to rate higher than any other fear. Above spiders, incursions from outer space, even death. As I stood at the podium in front of a crowd of mostly strangers staring up at me - I could see why.

It was stupid really. With everything I’d been through in my life, you’d think standing up and giving a lecture on spontaneous mutation would have been a cakewalk. I’d run away from home at seventeen and put myself through college. I dated not one but two ex-Russian assassins. I’d been kidnapped and held hostage - and on one occasion I’d infiltrated a HYDRA base and helped take it down.

Yet here I was, standing in front of a full room, just talking about something I had been studying for years, and my heart was hammering so hard that I think I might have been speaking a little too loud just so I could hear myself over it.

In the sea of faces in front of me, most of whom I didn’t know, there were two that I knew very well right at the front, beaming up at me like I was giving a lecture on how I’d personally hung the stars in the sky.

I’d been invited to talk at a Theoretical Evolutionary Genetics at Berkley. Bruce was speaking soon, and Tony had tagged along out of interest's sake. At least that’s what he’d said. I felt like there was some pride in the fact that this was my first big conference lecture, and he wanted to be there for it.

I was glad they were there. For starters, looking down and seeing them both beaming up at me, had a calming effect. It wasn’t just that though. I didn’t get to go out with them very often. We didn’t date the way most people did and this was an actual trip together to San Francisco. We were staying in a hotel and going out to dinner together. We were even going to take a couple of days to do touristy things, despite Tony’s objections. It was nice seeing them getting recognition for things outside of Avengers stuff too. Tony did draw attention even here, but it was Bruce who was the star of the show. Everyone wanted to talk to him, and I loved getting to see that.

Most of all, it felt so fucking good to have two people there to support me like this. I’d never had that before, and now we were out as being in a relationship, I got to experience something so many people just took for granted.

I finished my lecture to a round of applause and after answering some questions, the room started to empty. I collected my things and came down to where Tony and Bruce were waiting for me. They each kissed me and Tony ran his hands down my arms. “That was so great. I’m dating a genius here,” Tony said.

“Tony, you’ve already heard my lecture. Every version of it. Multiple times,” I said, as I took his hand.

“I know,” he said. “But it’s like I learn something new every time.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Liar.”

“Alright, come on. Let’s go back to the hotel and change and I’ll take you both out to celebrate a successful presentation,” Tony said.

“I hope you do the same for Bruce tomorrow. He is the keynote speaker,” I said.

“Oh definitely,” he agreed. “I have reservations for the best restaurant in the city.”

Bruce blushed softly and shook his head. “You say things like that and I don’t know if you’re joking or not.”

Tony clapped him on the shoulder and wrapped his arm around him. “I wouldn’t joke about that! Atelier Crenn. It has three Michelin Stars. You have to book a year in advance. Well - if you’re not me.”

“Tony,” Bruce said. “We don’t have to do anything fancy.”

“I know that,” he said. “But we’re going to. You’re worth fawning over too, Brucie Bear.”

That just made Bruce blush more.

The three of us made our way back to the hotel and I started to strip off the grey pantsuit that I'd worn for the lecture.

“What was it you wanted to do while we were here?” Tony asked as he hung up his jacket.

“I wanted to go to Alcatraz. I wanted to see the sea lions at pier 39 and ride on that big double-decker carousel. I want to drive past the painted ladies. Oh - I want to go to the Winchester Mansion,” I said, listing the main things on the list. We didn’t have a lot of time, but it was better to say what I wanted and run out of time than to risk not even attempt to do them.

Tony groaned and rolled his eyes dramatically. “Such a tourist…”

“Oh!” I said as I wriggled out of my pants. “If we had time I’d like to drive down to Santa Cruz. That’s where they filmed The Lost Boys.”

“We might need to pass on that one, Santa Cruz, Alcatraz, and the Winchester Mansion are full days and we only have a couple to spare,” Bruce said. He was already down to his boxers and seemed to be deciding what to do next. “Besides, I’ve seen The Lost Boys and you’ll be wanting to go to the amusement park, and no offense, but I don’t think Hulk will let me ride a rollercoaster.”

“I’ll ride the rollercoaster with Hulk then,” I said and tossed my bra aside.

He looked me up and down as he walked over, wrapping his arms around my waist. “Hulk thinks he’d rather stay here with you like this.”

“Just the Hulk?” I asked.

“No we can’t,” Tony countered. “but I'm sure there will be somewhere we can eat that isn't tacky.”

I started giggling and Bruce guided me back onto the bed. He looked over at Tony as I crawled into the middle of the king-sized mattress. “Are you just going to stand there making dinner plans or do you want to join us?”

Tony froze in place and stared at us for a moment. “Oh yes. Right. Private Science Conference.”

He hop-stepped over to us as he shook off his pants and underwear in one go, and dove onto the mattress beside us. “So what are we doing here?”

“Come on, Tony,” I teased. “Do we need to have the birds and the bees talk again?”

Ranking Sanscest ships

To celebrate the fact that it's almost Valentine's Day I have decided I wanted to rank all Sanscest ships (I won't be including ships like Erosion x Ceno, Paperjam x Fresh, Fallacy x Encre, Mad Sci ships, Passive ships, Shattered ships, Empireverse ships, etc. I'll also leave out genderbends because then there would be way too much). How Do Neural Networks Learn? A Mathematical Formula Explains How They Detect Relevant Patterns - Technology Org

Neural networks have been powering breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, including the large language models that are now being used in a wide range of applications, from finance to human resources to healthcare. However, these networks remain a black box whose inner workings engineers and scientists struggle to understand. A team led by data and computer scientists at the University of California San Diego has given neural networks the equivalent of an X-ray to uncover how they actually learn.

The researchers found that a formula used in statistical analysis provides a streamlined mathematical description of how neural networks, such as GPT-2, a precursor to ChatGPT, learn relevant patterns in data, known as features. This formula also explains how neural networks use these relevant patterns to make predictions.

“We are trying to understand neural networks from first principles,” said Daniel Beaglehole, a Ph.D. student in the UC San Diego Department of Computer Science and Engineering and co-first author of the study. “With our formula, one can simply interpret which features the network uses to make predictions.”

The team presented their findings in the Science journal.

Why does this matter? AI-powered tools are now pervasive in everyday life. Banks use them to approve loans. Hospitals use them to analyze medical data, such as X-rays and MRIs. Companies use them to screen job applicants. But it’s currently difficult to understand the mechanism neural networks use to make decisions and the biases in the training data that might impact this.

“If you don’t understand how neural networks learn, it’s very hard to establish whether neural networks produce reliable, accurate, and appropriate responses,” said Mikhail Belkin, the paper’s corresponding author and a professor at the UC San Diego Halicioglu Data Science Institute. “This is particularly significant given the rapid recent growth of machine learning and neural net technology.”

The study is part of a larger effort in Belkin’s research group to develop a mathematical theory that explains how neural networks work. “Technology has outpaced theory by a huge amount,” he said. “We need to catch up.”

The team also showed that the statistical formula they used to understand how neural networks learn, known as Average Gradient Outer Product (AGOP), could be applied to improve performance and efficiency in other types of machine learning architectures that do not include neural networks.

“If we understand the underlying mechanisms that drive neural networks, we should be able to build machine learning models that are simpler, more efficient and more interpretable,” Belkin said. “We hope this will help democratize AI.”

The machine learning systems that Belkin envisions would need less computational power and, therefore, less power from the grid to function. These systems would also be less complex and so easier to understand.

Illustrating the new findings with an example

(Artificial) neural networks are computational tools to learn relationships between data characteristics (i.e. identifying specific objects or faces in an image). One example of a task is determining whether in a new image a person is wearing glasses or not. Machine learning approaches this problem by providing the neural network many example (training) images labeled as images of “a person wearing glasses” or ”a person not wearing glasses.” The neural network learns the relationship between images and their labels, and extracts data patterns, or features, that it needs to focus on to decide. One of the reasons AI systems are considered a black box is because it is often difficult to describe mathematically what criteria the systems are actually using to make their predictions, including potential biases. The new work provides a simple mathematical explanation for how the systems are learning these features.

Features are relevant patterns in the data. In the example above, there are a wide range of features that the neural networks learns, and then uses, to determine if in fact a person in a photograph is wearing glasses or not. One feature it would need to pay attention to for this task is the upper part of the face. Other features could be the eye or the nose area where glasses often rest. The network selectively pays attention to the features that it learns are relevant and then discards the other parts of the image, such as the lower part of the face, the hair and so on.

Feature learning is the ability to recognize relevant patterns in data and then use those patterns to make predictions. In the glasses example, the network learns to pay attention to the upper part of the face. In the new Science paper, the researchers identified a statistical formula that describes how the neural networks are learning features.

Alternative neural network architectures: The researchers went on to show that inserting this formula into computing systems that do not rely on neural networks allowed these systems to learn faster and more efficiently.

“How do I ignore what’s not necessary? Humans are good at this,” said Belkin. “Machines are doing the same thing. Large Language Models, for example, are implementing this ‘selective paying attention’ and we haven’t known how they do it. In our Science paper, we present a mechanism explaining at least some of how the neural nets are ‘selectively paying attention.’”

“Surprise” Oneshot, ClassicxScixOuter

Created on: 11/6/20

Requested by: Someone from discord. I went to a public Undertale related server and asked for any requests. They responded with Classic x Outer x Sci

Sci was stressed out as hell.

With all of the drama with the Bad Sanses, worrying about his AU, then worrying about his alternate versions, and then worrying about his own AU's problems...

God, there was so much that needed to be done.

"Heya Sci-"

"AH!" The scientist could've sworn he jumped 6 feet off the ground as he whirled around to see his boyfriends standing there waving at him. When did they even come in? How did they even get here?

"Woah! Chill there buddy," His future self stepped forwards and caught him when he began to fall back to the ground as he continued. "we just came in through the door. You probably didn't hear us. Also, we wanted to surprise you and make you take a break."

"What?!" He jumped out of Classic arms, vigorously shaking his head. "I can't take a break! There's too much that needs to be done! I have to file some reports, work on the times tables, think of methods to break the Barrier, program a self sustaining program for the Core with Gaster-"

"All of which can wait," Outer said calmly. "the thing about stress is that it can pressure you into thinking irrationally or unable to think. I'm sure once you relax, it'll all come to you more easily."

Sci hated to admit it, but Outer was right. Stress can really do that to ya and it has probably been piling up on him lately. Boy was he glad to be dating one of the most chill of his alternates he knew. Heck, even just him talking managed to calm him down a bit!

He hung his head, this being a habit they both recognized as he stepped forward and pulled them both into a group hug. Sci would never admit it, but hugs and cuddles really comforted him. A lot.

He didn't have to look up to know the two probably had knowing looks on their faces. He knew them pretty well too after having had known them for two years after all.

"S-Sans!" His Alphys's stuttering voice came through the door as they all jolted. Oh stars, thank goodness she's waiting outside the door. It would be so difficult to explain to her about the AUs and that he's dating his future self and alternate self. After all, he was in a way somehow technically dating himself?

But he couldn't help but to chuckle at Classic's refreshing jokes and talk about the lore of the stars with Outer. No matter how much he had tried to stop himself before with "But Classic's me from the future" or "Outer is me from an alternate universe." His rational thinking did not stop his irrational soul from falling head over heals for them.

And to be honest, he didn't really regret it in the slightest.

"Sans! A-are you in there?" The voice of his lizard friend snapped him out of his daze as he quickly let go of his boyfriends.

"E-Everything's okay Alphys! Sorry, I was just really focused on something!" Well, he technically wasn't lying. He was focused on something. Glancing over his shoulder, he checked on Outer and Classic...

Only to see they were gone? What-?

Another knock was heard from the door as the yellow lizard monster's voice came through once more. "Are you sure? S-Sans... I hope you're not working too hard again."

"It's fine Alphys," he tried to reassure her. "I'm actually taking a break right now."

"O-Oh? Alright then Sans... Sorry for interrupting then..." He could hear fading footsteps going down the hall and his own exhalation of relief. Soon, two sounds of magic being used that he recognized as teleportation could be heard from behind him as Classic and Outer reappeared.

Well... Now that he was "officially" on break...

Some cuddles and movie time with the best boyfriends in the multiverse were absolutely in order.

"Just A Bit Longer" ~Astronomy

Sci was always up doing SOMETHING, whether it be work, staying up until 2 am for no clear reason, reading, or spending all of his free time and then some with Outer, who was not impressed by Sci always doing something and would barely ever stop, and he'd always say, "Just a bit longer" and take what felt like two years to finish what he was doing.

"Sci your favorite movie is on," Outer said.

"I need just a bit longer to do this," Sci replied.

A few days later Outer woke up rather early and went to the kitchen and saw Sci eating toast.

"Sci, what are you doing up so early in the morning? Have you even slept yet?" Outer said, quite worried.

"Sorry give me just a bit longer," Sci said before taking a bite of his toast, "I'll go to bed once I finish my toast."

About a day later it was nearly midnight when Outer and Sci were watching funny movies.

"Hey, I think we should head to bed, it's really late."

"Can we stay up, just a bit longer?"

About a week later Sci was up as usual, reading a book.

"Sci. It's past midnight, we both need rest, come on, let's go to sleep."

"Gimme just a bit longer, I'm nearly done with this chapter."

Two days later,

"Dinner is ready Sci," Outer said from the dining room.

"I need to finish setting up something so give me just a bit longer," Sci replied from the basement.

About 20 minutes later Outer came downstairs, "Dinner is getting cold, Sci."

"Oh really? I'm so so sorry I must have lost track of time."

"Well, it'd be best for you to learn how to keep track of it, I mean, you go to sleep around three or four in the morning and wake up at six in the morning almost every day. Heck, your dark circles even have dark circles. Sci, what you're doing is unhealthy and can and will lead to a burn out if you keep it up," Outer said in a concerned tone of voice.

"Look, Outer, I'm sorry. I understand your concern, and I'll try to not be that way. Okay? We'll go eat dinner and then we can cuddle, have ice cream, watch a movie, anything of your choice. Sound fair?"

Outer thought for a moment and sighed, "Fine."He and Sci then went up stairs to the dining room to eat dinner.

Afterwards, Sci got Outer and himself a bowl of Neapolitan ice cream and they both sat down in the living room with a warm blanket wrapped around them as they watched animated movies together. It only took 2 and a half movies for Outer to fall asleep, but Sci hang fallen asleep yet rather he was wide awake, he wasn't sure why he was awake, but he was. And after the third movie ended, Sci picked Outer up bridal style and took him to their bedroom and gently placed him on the bed and tucked him in. Once he was done with that he went to the kitchen and made himself some warm sweet milk in hopes that it'll help him sleep, but it didn't.

"Guessing I'll be awake just a bit longer than expected," Sci sighed as he finished his warm sweet milk and went into the living room and grabbed a book from the living room then say down on the couch and began reading.

An hour passed... Sci still wasn't sleepy.

Another hour went by... Sci wasn't anywhere near being sleepy.

About an hour and a half went by before Sci felt remotely tired. But he knew that Outer wouldn't be happy that he stayed up so late and he didn't want Outer to be upset, so he put the book he was reading away and went to Outer and his room; laid down on their bed, gently putting the blanket on top of him; and gently pulled Outer into an embrace. Some time later Sci was able to fall asleep, but at least he did.

Sci woke up at about 6:30 in the morning." Maybe I can stay here just a bit longer," he said before kissing Outer on the forehead and falling back asleep.
