Jeremy St James had two main reasons for wanting to attend McKinley High over Carmel.  The first reason was easy; he lived with his Uncle Josh more often than with his parents, and Josh lived in the McKinley District.  The second reason was harder to admit, but with Jesse having been Vocal Adrenaline’s star for so long, and Aunt Shelby having been their director for just as long, he wanted to start high school somewhere outside of the shadow of his family.  Unfortunately, as he started his freshman year at McKinley with high hopes of joining their Glee club, he would quickly learn that they were more than familiar with the St James name — and unlike Carmel, they didn’t think highly of it.

Red, Red Wine

i’m back with another fic. officially obsessed with writing these. this one is based on my post from about a month ago where i was talking about the 3x11 episode. i don’t like it as much as my first, but it does have its moments. 😜

summary: "blaine would not stop going on about the set list this morning when i called him about how to get red wine out of the piping of my blazer," sebastian said, pointing at him through the circle of new directions members. "how much do you two talk?" kurt asked his boyfriend, looking exasperated.

a long night of drinking and just dance 3 landed sebastian in a terrifying situation and in immediate need of help. blaine's help, specifically. this is the backstory of how sebastian got red wine on his blazer in the first place, and the phone call that happened afterwards. the night before, leading up to 3x11 "Michael" when sebastian encounters the opposing glee club at the lima bean.

note: ‘emily’ is an oc of mine, who is seb’s cousin who lives and works in paris as a school teacher. she’s about 4-5 years older.

The Christmas season is always the most hectic, and this year was no different. Friends and family come into town and alumni visit the old halls they once knew so well. Midterms had just passed, leaving students exhausted from memorizing their notes and typing essay on top of essay for their classes. For the entire month, Dalton had been bustling with people, leaving little spare time to unwind. Now it was finally January: the quiet month tucked in between the month of festivities and the month of love. Families were starting to go back home, leaving their kids at school once again. Alumni headed home to continue their careers. The white lights were taken off the academy’s scaffolding and tucked back into the storage room. Simplicity returned, and the Warblers were determined to take advantage of it.

That was how the boys ended up on the second floor of the dorms, passing around bottles of liquor acquired from their friends or parents. As they sprawled out across couches and beanbags, cups were drained just as fast as they were poured. Most had no intention of actually being drunk, but instead to just get tipsy enough to let their stress and worries fade away until they were able to sleep hard all night long. Some on the other hand, were having way too much fun and quickly lost their hold on reality.

Jeff was one of them, who drank too much too soon and was now bouncing on the couch next to an annoyed David.

“If you don’t stop, a teacher’s gonna hear you.” He warned the hyper boy, “then we’re all going to get in trouble.”

Jeff bounced one more time, pretending like he didn’t hear him, but then the words sunk in, causing him to take a seat. David let out a sigh of relief that his words convinced him, because he was tired of feeling the cushion under him rise and fall. He took a sip of the red wine he was drinking, then looked away, satisfied with himself.

Varying degrees of drunkenness were displayed throughout the room. Wes in the corner, actually studying, while sipping carefully on a wine of his own. Trent was facing the lounge’s flat screen tv trying to find the correct remote to turn on the Wii. Across from him, two boys were yelling at him to grab “remote with the red start button” or the “remote that has the lost battery cap”. The yelling caught the attention of Thad, who joined in with “are you going to play Just Dance 2 or 3?”

Over in the corner, Sebastian sat quietly with Nick poking at his shoulder. He could feel every tap against his polyester blazer, but chose to ignore it. Although pretending to not notice did not discourage Nick at all from trying to get his attention.

It’s not that he was annoyed with the boy, but he knew what would happen if he engaged. Nick, who’s already excitable without being tipsy, would suddenly get a huge burst of energy to do something stupid. Like, play twister or go outside and climb the balcony, for example. Then he would get Jeff involved, because those two do everything together. It would depend on the idea whether or not anyone else would join in on their shenanigans. If it were a good idea, half the intoxicated Warblers would participate; if it were bad, they would be alone, but nonetheless just as hyped to do it. Trying to relax after the long month where he had to see his entire extended family over the Christmas break, Sebastian decided to avoid that altogether.

He was suddenly snapped out of his thoughts, “are you gonna play when they get it set up?” Nick asked, pushing a finger into his side.

Sebastian looked up, checking to see if any progress was made, “I don’t think they’re even gonna figure it out,” he replied, watching Trent furiously push buttons on the receiver.

“Try the red button.” Someone shouted. The tv blinks off immediately.

“Idiot, the red button is always off. Push the green to turn it back on and then push ‘menu’.” Another voice called.

Trent followed this order next, then when the tv turns back on, he pressed the ‘menu’ button. Finally, a selection of apps presented itself with Wii being one of the options. The boys created a clamor of hoots and hollers upon seeing this, satisfied in their victory.

From the back of the room, Wes spoke up to control the crowd, “guys, noise levels.” The boys listened, because they know they will get in trouble by a teacher if they aren’t quieter. Their excited sounds were brought down to a whisper, not gone nor any less enthusiastic, but less audible.

The ‘Just Dance 3’ CD was accepted with almost as much energy as their show choir trophies. After placing it delicately in the player and taking a step back, the boys involved started making teams. Sebastian took this as an opportunity to escape the couch and fetch himself more red wine. Instead of taking his seat back on the couch, however, he sat opposite Wes at the desk.

“Less likely to get hit in the face over here.” He said with a friendly smirk on his face. Wes looked up and nodded with a smile, but doesn’t say anything in response.

A text message brought Sebastian’s attention towards his phone. He wasn’t sure who to expect, but was hoping for someone in particular.

Hey, I’m glad I got to see you last week. Come see me soon? It read. The text was from his cousin, Emily, who came from Paris to visit during Christmas. He actually loved seeing her, and she was the only family member who didn’t make him want to drink.

He replied to the message, smiling at her sweetness and the thought of revisiting his old hometown. His smile faltered when he pressed the back button and was met with his contacts list. At the bottom of the screen sat the number of the boy he couldn’t help but love, yet couldn’t have. Blaine Anderson. He considered texting him, even inviting him over to play with the troublemakers on the Wii in front of him, but then thought better of it. His boyfriend would not be thrilled if he caught wind of the invitation. While Sebastian loved to get on Kurt’s nerves, he didn’t want Blaine to have to face the repercussions of it.

He stared at the number for a minute longer. Although he decided it was a bad idea to text him, especially after having a glass of wine, he still wanted to talk. Luckily the tune of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” snapped him out of his trance. Ugh. Of all songs. It was ironic. Here he stared at Blaine’s number, the boy he couldn’t have, while Queen’s famous love song played in the background of his mind.

Apparently he groaned out loud, because Wes was staring at him when he finally looked up again. “Sorry. Family member texting me,” he lied. The other boy gave a face that said, totally understand man, and went back to his work.

“YO HO HO!” Sebastian quickly identified Nick’s voice and began looking for him amongst the sea of blazers. His eyes finally landed on the boy over by the liquor table, refilling another cup of rum and coke. Even from his distance, Sebastian could see him going heavy on the rum, and then most of the coke not making its way into the cup.

“Oh god,” he said out loud, getting up quickly to intervene. “Hey, hey, slow down there buddy.”

Nick noticed his friend next to him and his eyes lit up, “are you looking for a cup? I got you, I’ve got supreme bartending skills.”

“Yeah, I bet. Where’d you even get the rum?”

“Jeff’s sister brought it.”

“I should’ve known.” Sebastian muttered, partially to himself.

“Want any?”

“No thanks, but if you’re going to drink, I hope you refocus your aim into your cup rather than on the carpet.”

“Oh, shit. Thanks for noticing!”

“Yeah, yeah. And calm down just a smidge there, okay? Don’t want Ms. Aubert to cut the party short.”

Nick’s eyes went wide at the mention of their strict French teacher. He nodded quickly, then carefully walked back to the couch.

When Sebastian got back to the desk, he told Wes, “better tell Rylie not to bring Jeff any more rum.”

“This is her doing? I’m going to text her a picture of what she’s left us with,” he said, snapping a picture of the girl’s brother and sending it.

Both laugh, then decided to watch the entertaining “show” happening before them.

An hour or so passed of the boys taking turns dancing to different pop songs. A few times, even David, Wes, and Sebastian joined in, despite trying to avoid involvement in the tomfoolery. Whoever wasn’t sweating due to alcohol intake was sweating because of the ‘exhausting’ level of effort of songs chosen in the game. Those engaged in both have stripped themselves of their blazers and socks, but were stopped from removing anything else.

“Nope, don’t need to see that. Leave your clothes on or go to your room and change.” Wes, who quickly got nicknamed “Damage Control” instructed.

The availability of alcohol had decreased to almost nothing, which was a blessing and a curse. There was less for them to consume tonight, which would eventually draw the night to a close, but the next time any of them felt like drinking, they’d have to go out and buy more. Or, rather, get a friend to buy it.

Sebastian felt exhausted and was ready for the night to end, but his friends did not have the same thought. No matter how tired, they were still rocking out to song after song. When it was currently Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You” (edited on the CD for kids), the energy in the room was still not slowing down at all.

“Aren’t you guys tired?” He questioned to the room.

“No way, but you can go to sleep if you want.” Someone replied.

Sebastian sighed and stood up, wine glass in hand. There was only a bit left and he was about to drink it down when he was suddenly knocked off balance.

“Oh shit! Sorry! I got dizzy.” Came the voice of Jeff, who appeared in front of him. He was still spinning in place when Sebastian got his bearings back.

“You’re fine, but man, take it slow.” The other nodded, then trotted off to the couch again.

“On that note,” Sebastian said, mostly to Wes who was sober enough to hear him, “I’m going to bed.” The other boy nodded and he went away into the direction of his dorm room. He just barely had enough energy to shake off his clothes and put on a pair of sweatpants before crashing on the bed. In less than a minute, he was out like a light.

Morning came, signaling itself through a bright ray of sun peeking through the curtains. It struck right at Sebastian’s eye level, waking him up quickly. He groaned. His head stung with dehydration after last night’s events, which reminded him what had happened.

“Can’t believe I stayed up as long as I did.” He muttered to himself, pulling himself up and looking around the room. Across from him, he saw Nick had finally made it to bed. The boy was sprawled out, limbs extended in all directions. He wore only his boxers, obviously too tired to even try put on any clothes before knocking out into sleep. His uniform was balled up and the articles of clothing made a path from the door to his bed. Sebastian noticed his own uniform sat on his desk chair beside his bed. He was glad he was sober enough to at least lay them down gently. That way his blazer wouldn’t be wrinkled for class today.

Oh, shit! He suddenly thought, whipping his neck around to check the clock. Relief hit him and he laid back down against the pillow when the clock read 6 a.m. Two hours before class. Against his desires to pull his blanket back up and sleep longer, he knew he had to take care of his pounding headache. Water would be the best way to do that, considering he neglected to drink any the previous night. Sebastian counted to three, then finally peeled the blanket off his almost bare body, exposing it to the room’s cool air. He hurried to the bathroom and got done what he had to before getting dressed. Between the headache and the general sluggishness of having to go to class, it took him nearly twenty minutes to finish. By the time he got out, Nick was still dead asleep and it didn’t look like he’d be awake any time soon. Sebastian decided to get ready, then study in the cafeteria in the minutes leading up to his first class. Maybe coffee with help with the headache? Is that logical or against all logic? He didn’t know, but was craving the taste too much to care. Glad he had a plan to face the morning, he grabbed a fresh pair of his uniform pants with a white button down from his closet. After laying them down on the bed, he moved his blazer over as well, then slipped on the buttoned shirt. That’s when he noticed something that made his heart sink.

“No, no, no, no, no, no…” he muttered out loud, seeing a red stain in the piping of his blazer. He immediately ran his hands through his hair, still messy, and took a deep sigh. The stain wasn’t super obvious, but it would bother him all day regardless. And by chance someone did point it out, he’d be busted by the school and his dad.

Sebastian quickly grabbed his phone and scrolled through his contacts list. He whispered to himself, “who do I call? Who would know what to do? Emily? No, she’s probably busy teaching by now, her kids’ classes start at 7 and that’s cutting it too close.” His eyes land on Blaine, as they did last night. He debated it for a minute, back and forth reasoning with himself. If he’s with Kurt this could go wrong. His dad probably wouldn’t let him sleep over, he’ll be alone. He won’t pick up, he’ll be getting ready himself. Wait, he used to go to Dalton, he might know the secret fix to my problem. I need to try. At that, he finally he pushed the name, then the ‘call’ button, and listened to the ringing.

“Hello?” Came from the other end of the line.

“Hey, Blaine! I hate to call so early in the morning. And I know you probably have class soon, but I was out late with the guys last night. We were in the dorm, but still hung out late. Anyway, I know you used to have to keep up with these blazers too, and I may have spilled on mine last night. I don’t totally remember, but –”

“Whoa, whoa, too early. Sebastian, slow down.”

“Sorry, sorry. Do you know how to get a red wine stain out of the blazer? I must’ve split some on mine last night and am not sure what to do.”

“You’re in luck, I actually do. My brother taught me a trick sometime ago. You’ve gotta use three parts hydrogen peroxide and one part dishwashing soap.”

“Dishwashing soap? Not detergent?”

“Like Dawn, the stuff they use on baby ducks.”

“Oh, ok, ok. Wait, can you stay on the line while I go find these things? I might forget on my way.”

“Yeah, no problem. I’m walking to school and only halfway there.”

“Ok, I have some hydrogen peroxide under the bathroom sink, so I have to go get dishwashing soap from the cafeteria.” Sebastian quickly left the room to begin his search, forgetting he’s wearing only his button down with grey sweatpants.

“So, have you put any thought into what the Warblers are doing for Regionals?”

“I honestly haven’t, with the Christmas season being as atrocious as it was. My mom’s whole side of her family came to visit the States. Then I had to stay a week with my dad at his house, here in Ohio. Right when I settled back in, these geeks had a whole wine and dine night, except the dine was ‘Just Dance 3’.”

On the opposite end, Blaine was laughing. It was a genuine and passionate laugh that Sebastian loved hearing.

“Ha, I would’ve loved to see that last night. I’m sorry about the family stuff, though, I completely understand having difficulties with them. I do, myself. With my own family.” He added the last part a second later, clarifying. His thoughts went wild, he’s gonna think I have problems with his family. I have my own family problems. I don’t like the way they seem to treat him, so I guess I kind of do, but he doesn’t need to know that! He was glad Sebastian couldn’t tell he was blushing.

Little did he know, Sebastian had a small smile on his face, but kept it to himself. He debated telling Blaine he wanted to invite him over but didn’t because of Kurt, but then Blaine continued,

“Anyway, though, I think the New Directions are going to continue with the Michael Jackson theme. It worked well for us with Sectionals.”

“It did, yeah. You were great up there. Wait one second.”

Sebastian put down the phone, but Blaine could still hear his voice as he talked to the lady behind the cafeteria counter.

“Good morning. Is there any way you can give me a small cup of dishwashing soap? I spilled something in my room and was told that works well for it. I’m sorry for the odd request.”

The lady gave him an eccentric look, but eventually shrugged and told him “alright”.

A faint chuckle belonging to Blaine was then noticed by Sebastian, who placed the phone back at his ear and responded with an, “oh shut up”. This only caused the smaller boy to laugh harder.

“Here’s your soap.” Sebastian brought down his phone to address the lady and reach out to grab the small plastic bowl of soap.

“Thank you, madame.” He told her, then began to make his way back to the dorms.

“You’re such a gentleman when you’re not being a little shit.”

“Thank you for the compliment.”

The laughing continued. Sebastian loved being the one to make Blaine so happy in this moment. Without thinking, he told the boy what he wanted to a few minutes ago, “I wanted to invite you over yesterday to watch the boys get drunk and stupid. I didn’t because I was worried that it would upset Kurt, and I don’t want you to have to face him when he’s mad.”

Blaine’s laughter quickly faded into silence and Sebastian’s heart dropped.

“I’m sorry.” Sebastian followed up, scared he upset him.

“It’s okay. You’re not wrong. Although next time, invite me anyway. I’ll say that it’s a Warbler party and, oh, I don’t know, Nick wants me to come.”

Sebastian let out a fake laugh. He was happy that Blaine would possibly be coming to the next ‘party’, but deeply saddened at the same time. He wanted to be the one to invite the other boy. He wanted Blaine to have to tell Kurt that Sebastian invited him, and that he was going to go. He was also sad that Blaine had to lie to hang out with his Dalton friends in the first place.

Instead of saying any of that, he said, “ok I’m at my dorm. Three parts hydrogen peroxide, one part this soap. Oh, and speaking of Nick, he’s passed out cold.”

“Really? He was that drunk?”

“He was the farthest one gone.”

Blaine was giggling again, but not for long as he spotted McKinley in the distance. “Ok, so mix the two parts and apply it, then let it sit for about twenty minutes. Then you have to blot it out before you attempt to wash it. Blot it, Bas, do not rub it.”

The nickname got him flustered, “No rubbing? Aw, ok.”

“Did you just wake up and let your miscreant side out?”

“Hey now, you asked for that one. Couldn’t help it.”

Blaine rolled his eyes. Sebastian couldn’t see it, but knew what he was doing. Egging him on, he added, “hey might I steal your MJ idea for Regionals?”

“What, no. Don’t you dare.”

“What, it’s a good idea. Hopefully we can look as you did up there. You, singular, not your group.”

“Bas…”

“I’m kidding. Mostly. Maybe. I’ll let you know.”

Blaine changed the subject, “did you get that mixture in your blazer? Let it soak for twenty minutes.”

“Got it mom, you already mentioned that. It’s soaking.”

“Ok, well. I’m near the entrance to my school and I’ve got to get off the phone. These public schoolers are extremely loud for people forced awake at seven in the morning. I remember Dalton classes being dead silent, everybody sipping coffee, until at least second period.”

“Sounds like hell. You’re always welcome back.”

“Bas, I can’t right now.”

“Sorry, again. I’ll let you go. I’ve got to get coffee soon anyway before I fall back asleep. In twenty minutes, I’ll be sure to take your advice and rub this out of my blazer.”

“BLOT, Seb.”

“I know, I know, just wanted to get a rise out of you.”

“You raise my blood pressure.”

“It was nice talking to you. See you later?”

“I bet I will. Enjoy your classes.” With that, Blaine hung up.

Sebastian immediately missed his voice, but couldn’t linger on that right now. He had classes in an hour and still had to get coffee. Blaine was right: nobody at this school wakes up until at least second period. First period is ‘sip coffee and listen to your English teacher go on and on about Shakespeare’ class.

“Pants.” The boy muttered to himself, suddenly remembering he was still in his sweats. Right when he got them on, Nick began to stir.

“Oh my god, my head.” He groaned.

“I’m honestly surprised you’re even awake. Thought you’d just sleep right through the day.”

“I’d love to, but I can’t. My mom told me if I miss first period this semester as much as I did last, there would be consequences. I don’t know if those consequences are having to spend a week at my dad’s house, or having to hug my brother, but either way I’m not taking the risk.”

“Damn, your brother’s that bad?”

“Is my younger, ten year old, half-brother who is currently obsessed with peanut butter sandwiches and Pokémon cards that bad? Yes. He is.” Nick stared into the distance, as if imagining the thought, “I mean, I love him, but keep him six feet apart.”

Sebastian snickered, then checked his watch. “Oh, twenty minutes are up.” He disappeared into the bathroom and came back with a wad of toilet paper.

“Twenty minutes for what?” Nick asked, but then noticed what he was doing, “oh, dude, you are fucked.”

“I know, I know. It looks really bad and I’m freaking out. But, I called Blaine and he says that three parts hydrogen peroxide and one part dishwashing soap works well.”

“You called Blaine?”

“Yes. Is that –, should I not have, –” Sebastian started to ask, getting nervous.

“No, no. You didn’t call Emily? Or Wes?”

“No, I assumed Blaine would know.”

Nick didn’t say anything, but instead just giggled.

“What??” Sebastian demanded, clearly confused.

“God, you are whipped for that boy.” Nick answered, laughing to himself as he goes into the bathroom. He shut the door, leaving Sebastian to ponder how bad his crush really is.
