The UK Minister of State for Veterans’ Affairs Johnny Mercer is seeking to challenge a legal decision compelling him to hand over the names of those who told him about alleged war crimes by UK special forces in Afghanistan. The “Independent Inquiry relating to Afghanistan”, which opened last October at the Royal Courts of Justice in London—and at which he appeared last month—has been hearing evidence of scores of unlawful killings carried out by British special forces in Afghanistan, as well as the deletion of electronic confirmation of these war crimes and whitewashing through internal inquiries. Mercer told the inquiry that he believed members of the Special Air Service (SAS) had engaged in dozens of unlawful killings of Afghan civilians during night raids between 2010 and 2013. He repeatedly refused to hand over names of the “multiple officers” who he claimed had told him about allegations of the killings by UK forces and their cover-up. Among the claims made by Mercer was that he received a direct account from a serving member of the Special Boat Service (SBS) of being asked to carry a “drop weapon”, which Mercer explained were non-NATO weapons carried by UK Special Forces units that could be planted on the body of those killed during a mission. This is used to justify the killing on the grounds that the unarmed victim had posed a threat to military personnel. Former soldier Mercer also told the inquiry he had gradually become aware of the SAS allegations on his last tour of Afghanistan in 2010 and then been given two specific warning by former colleagues—one a senior officer—in 2017 after he had become an MP. In refusing to disclose the names of his sources, Mercer told the inquiry: “The one thing you can hold on to is your integrity and I will be doing that with these individuals,” adding “The simple reality at this stage is, I’m not prepared to burn them—not when, in my judgement, you are already speaking to people who have far greater knowledge of what was going on.”

still thinking about the maria teresa author* who, when highlighting the physical differences between philip iv and his castilian subjects in passing, out of the blue, could think of nothing less strange than bringing up how "small and with rather developed body hairiness" the spaniards are. i think it was a french attempt at humor (haha! the spanish!) but it's just a very [?] thing to bring up specifically, given that the question of body hair was basically irrelevant with 17th century men's clothing.

it's a small thing but it stood out to me by its sheer randomness and the fact that someone thought it was either a relevant comment or a funny enough sentence to print. also my guy...... we are literally side by side. we are two mid sized to small countries glued together in a little peninsula-continent and we've had centuries upon centuries of exchanges. ive lived in both countries ive visited north and south and there is no big overarching "racial" difference between us............ i think there are obvious on-average differences in the extremes (pas de calais vs andalucia fight) but the way you see what's commonly attributed to the spanish you'd think we were different species. if you want to call us unattractive or more animalistic (not that i think the aforementioned traits are bad at all— but that's what the tone implies) you're gonna end up throwing a lot of stones at your fellow countrymen

Use the patriarchy to your favor; we live in a world that is, only associate with men who have power, use that power for good.

Never appear too perfect but be selectively vulnerable when needed. Only share something that you will be comfortable saying. You might say “I forget my keys all the time,” “I don’t know how to perfectly park a car “. But never disclose something you are not comfortable with just because you are afraid of being perfect.

Maintain distance in relationships. Friends are the best and you need them. But if you feel that they are becoming too dependent, see them at your own will. But also the reverse could be the case. Your friend may keep a distance, and that is the way of life. You have got to move on from it.

Develop your own style that makes you unique, beautiful, and elegant. Avoid trying to fit in the crowd of people who claim to care less about their style yet have too many opinions about other women’s style

Pay attention to the source of your discomfort; get rid of them. You tell them your dreams and they remind you of all your hindrances. In a highly unusual move, the White House has requested for it to be able to conduct arms deals with Israel in complete secrecy, without oversight from Congress or the public — in a time when the U.S. is supporting a military that experts say has been committing war crimes in Gaza and beyond. The White House made the request within a $106 billion supplemental defense funding request sent on October 20. As reported by In These Times, the White House is asking for up to $3.5 billion in military funding for Israel to be able to purchase weapons and other equipment, from sources like the U.S. military or U.S. defense contractors, without the spending having to be approved by or even disclosed to Congress.[...]

The request comes as the Biden administration has sought to crush dissent on its support of Israel, even within its own ranks. A new report by HuffPost published Thursday found that Biden officials are sidelining work within the State Department on the atrocities that Israel is committing in Gaza, seeking to seemingly cover up the issue and disallow employees from speaking up against the genocide. Citing Paul and five workers within the agency, the outlet reports that State Department staff have been told by higher ups that they are not going to be able to move the needle on the executive branch’s approach to Israel, no matter their credentials or the horrific things they report coming out of Gaza.
