Apparently people are complaining about the fact that horror movies are coming out about Mickey Mouse the second he became public domain.
Will the movies be good? Probably not. Will I enjoy their plots or acting? No, I don’t think so. Are they going to be stupid, cashgrab shock flics simply acting off of the fact this is a beloved childhood character? Yeah, it’s expected. Does that mean they shouldn’t exist? N O. THOSE ARE THE EXACT REASONS WHY THEY SHOULD EXIST!
That’s why the public domain even exists in the first place! The creative freedom to do whatever you want with media that has entered it. It’s been protected for ages, it’s original creator is long gone, and BigCompany has made numerous efforts to avoid this inevitable freedom (forever altering the public domain as we know it, due to the extensions). This isn’t a bad thing! This is an amazing thing! It’s the first bloom of the fruiting plant we’ve waited decades to harvest. It’s the first collection of honey from a beehive we’ve fostered for years. They’ve had their use out of it, and nobody is saying they can’t continue to use it, but now so can we! Let’s not forget that some of Disney’s most popular films are based on old stories, themselves.
If someone can make some crappy horror movie on these characters, just IMAGINE what YOU can do with them! Especially once more characters enter the lineup, as they soon will (Popeye the Sailor, anyone? I believe that one will join in for 2025!) I don’t believe copyright is a bad thing but I also believe everything has its lifespan. This isn’t even the end of the characters life, just another stage! It’s artistic freedom at its finest.
This is my original character, Michael the Gay Communist Pirate Mouse. He makes a living by pirating very popular animated movies and selling bootleg DVDs of them. His favorite hobby is going to a specific theme park and photobombing corny marriage proposals in front of the castle by positioning himself in a way where he can’t be edited out and showing his penis and hole.
He uses his lovely steamboat for transporting illicit firearms, drugs, and of course those bootleg DVDs. He has a cabin of it dedicated to kidnapping and holding corporate officials for ransom. He also occasionally hosts orgies on it.
He is an alcoholic and on every drug imaginable. He loves gay sex and communism and strippers. He is an omega and takes heat suppressants to control his urges but they don’t always work and he’s constantly horny, and when he can’t find a fertile partner to breed him he expresses his horny rage by beating up cops. I’m making a short film with him in it called “Crime Boat Mike.”
So the classic short "Steamboat Willie" has recently entered the public domain, and people all over the internet are exploiting the crap out of it! What a way to start off a year. Not that I'm complaining, It is a very integral part of Walt Disney's legacy as well as one of Ub Iwerks' greatest contributions to the field of animation. And regardless of how it's being portrayed, I'm glad that people are shedding some light on this short that was very groundbreaking for the time.
So I thought I'd contribute by creating this parody drawing of myself playing the role.
Also for anyone who's wondering why I'm not whistling the tune, it's because I can't whistle
people are drawing Steamboat Willie Mickey doing all this crazy shit and whatnot, but you could always do that. you can do that now, with current Mickey, just fine. it's fanart and it's legally protected. hell you could take Disney-drawn Mickey and put a caption about unions or whatever on it and it would still be protected under free speech and sometimes even parody law.
what is special about public domain is that you can SELL him. you could take a screenshot and sell it on a tshirt. you can use him to advertise your plumbing business. people have already uploaded and monetized the original film.
you could always have Mickey say what you want, but now you can profit off it.
Did a page to commemorate Mr. Michael W. Mouse, his lovely wife Wilhelmina, and Pete Cat entering the public domain.
Be free, little buddy. Can’t wait to see the horror movies, lmfao.
