How to study happy: 10 tips for super studying

1. Look ahead

Don’t let deadlines sneak up on you! Use your calendar to make a plan of action - when should I start reading for an assignment? When should I have a rough draft? Have I got other commitments around the same time? Organisation > panicking!

2. Set weekly goals

Whiteboards are great for mapping out your short term goals. And who doesn’t love a whiteboard! Writing down little tasks and ticking them off is a great way to see if you’re keeping on top of your work!

3.  Work in stages

Long essay? Never ending worksheet? Try breaking down big tasks into smaller stages. You might want to dedicate a morning to the introduction and the afternoon to the first three paragraphs. Mindmaps are great for plotting out each stage.

4. Read strategically

Reading smartly will save loads of time. Read introductions and conclusions to get a feel for what is being argued. Introductions of edited volumes give great little summaries of the chapters in the book.

5. Keep track of your reading

As any academic will tell you, referencing is super important. Keep track of the works you’ve read and the page numbers you’ve used as you go along. Sites like Refworks are a great resource.

6. Make notes that you can use

Whether you’re a colourful person or a practical note taker, make sure that yours are notes that you can use! Less is often more when it comes to good notes. When you’ve finished with them, make sure you file them properly so they’re always at hand.

7. Try note-taking software

Free programmes like Evernote are great for creating, organising, tagging, and revisiting your notes.

8.  Stay healthy

Eating and sleeping well are so important to healthy and happy studying. However, when you are working, make sure you take regular breaks. Concentration has been shown to drop off after 45 minutes - sure, it’s easy to reach for a chocolate bar for an instant boost, but try to have a healthy snack to refocus!

9. Study with friends

The best way to learn is to teach. When it comes to revising content, try teaching your classmates in peer-to-peer sessions. You department may offer Peer Assisted Study Sessions. If not, you can always set up your own!

10. Improve your skills

There is a smorgasbord of amazing resources open to students wishing to develop their skills at Birmingham: reading, writing, note taking, computer literacy… Between the Academic Skills Centre and the Digital & Technology Skills team, there’s hardly a skill that can’t be improved.
