i love the idea of richie spoiling eddie with gifts everytime he gets money from relatives or for allowance, and when he gets older and gets a job he uses that money too. it gets to a point that the losers tease them for it. it embarrasses eddie and he stops asking richie for presents, until one day he and richie are cuddling in the clubhouse and richie has to assure eddie it’s okay. then eddie goes back to asking richie for things, and tries to convince himself this is regular friend behavior.

Ahh yes! I can just see this dynamic forming between them when they’re very young. Because Richie’s parents have more money than Sonia does, so Richie always has more money for things like sweets and toys. 

So he starts buying things for Eddie, like it’ll be an ice cream one day, a comic the next, then toys, and he doesn’t know why but it’s always a small thrill for him. Spending his money on Eddie, then seeing the way the other boy’s face lights up and the way he says, “Thanks Rich,” in that small voice, making something hot zip down Richie’s spine. It even gets to the point where Eddie starts shyly asking Richie for things, like they’ll be in a shop and Eddie will say, “Could you maybe, erm, buy this for me, Richie?” and Richie will be pulling his money out of his pockets so fast it almost ends up all over the floor. And all Eddie does is bite his bottom lip, as Richie buys him whatever he asked for.

It becomes a small ritual between them - Eddie asking for things and Richie eagerly buying them until one day one of the Losers Club notices and says, “Isn’t that kinda weird?” Richie tells them to shut up but Eddie flushes red and after that stops asking Richie to buy him stuff. One day they’re getting ice cream and Richie automatically goes to buy Eddie’s and Eddie says in this huffy little voice, “I can buy my own ice cream, Richie!” and Richie’s like, “But I want to-” and Eddie’s like, “I’m not a charity case!” while all the other Losers stare at each other awkwardly. Richie also offers to buy Eddie this cute She-Ra t-shirt he thinks he’ll like, and Eddie says tightly, “No thanks, I’m good,” even though he obviously wants it.

So Richie confronts him about it when they’re alone in the clubhouse one day. They’re cuddling in the hammock (something they do while the others aren’t around and which always makes Richie feel hot and a bit like antsy, because Eddie is nestled against his chest and it takes everything in him not to slide his hands under his t-shirt) when Richie says, “Eddie why can’t I buy things for you anymore?” and Eddie squirms a little and says, “It’s weird, Richie, even the others said so.” And that makes Richie angry so he tightens his arms around Eddie and says, “No it isn’t, and who gives a fuck what anyone says. I like buying you stuff and you like when I do it. I want to do it, so why can’t I?” and Eddie just looks up at him and in this soft little voice is like, “Really?” and Richie’s like, “Yeah, duh,” and he watches as Eddie goes pink and then says, “Okay, you can keep doing it,” before nestling back into Richie’s arms. 

The next day, Richie buys Eddie flowers and a small teddy and presents them to Eddie proudly when he gets to the clubhouse. Eddie looks mortified but takes them anyway, going so red he looks like he’s caught an instant sunburn, while the others giggle in the background. Eddie looks like he wants to be annoyed, but he keeps the teddy on his lap for the rest of the afternoon, stroking its ears and every now and then giving Richie a small, shy smile.

So Richie and Eddie are on the red carpet for an event, and Eddie looks stunning, like he has this gorgeous designer suit on with a shimmering silk shirt underneath, and Richie keeps him close with a possessive arm around his waist. And the interviewer leans in and says, “I’ve heard the two of you have just bought a new house. What are your plans now that you’ve moved in?” and Eddie’s shy because he doesn’t really like all the attention and without thinking he says, “Well first, Daddy and I are going to go on our belated honeymoon,” but then he realises what he’s just said and he freezes, the smile dropping off his face. The pretty blonde interviewer recovers quickly and says, “Well fantastic!” and Richie just laughs, pulling Eddie closer to his side. 

The next day the internet is full of clickbait about the way Eddie called Richie “Daddy” and the clip has gone viral with millions of views. But Richie loves it and just makes things worse. Like he’ll be in an interview promoting his new show and he’ll suddenly pull out his phone and say, “Sorry, just a sec, gotta tell Eddie what time Daddy’s getting home,” and he’ll wear t-shirts with “Daddy” on them when they go out. "Do you ever think about the future?"

Buck's fingers brush against Eddie's shoulder where his arm is thrown across the back of the park bench. He doesn't look at him when he asks, both of their eyes trained on the family on the other side of the fountain. The little girl, no older than two, dips her hand into the water and shrieks with delight, her chubby cheeks almost hiding her eyes with the force of her grin.

"You already know I do."

Buck says nothing to that. Eddie waits. He closes his eyes against the warm August breeze and leans his head back against Buck's arm, letting him assemble his thoughts. He is a solid presence at his side, sturdy and warm, but not so warm that he makes the summer heat unbearable. Their legs are pressed together ankle to knee to thigh, and there's a brief moment where Eddie wonders if they sit together long enough, would they simply melt into each other?

After what could have been a few seconds, or minutes, or hours, Buck speaks again.

"Do you ever think about our future together?"

There it is.

Eddie cracks his eyes open to find Buck is already looking at him. There's a bead of sweat at his forehead, darkening his hair at the temple, and on his upper lip. His cheeks are flushed with the warmth of the sun. He's gorgeous.

"You already know I do," Eddie says again.

Eddie's confession of love to Buck over a year ago, gently whispered and freely given, was not so much a confession of feeling as it was a confession of desire, a confession of intention. I want you, he'd said, not in so many words. I want everything with you, forever. It was a helluva declaration, even he can admit that. He was the one who took Buck's hand and guided them across the threshold from just friends to something more; he can admit that too. It took Buck six months and twelve days to catch up, to back him up against his refrigerator door and kiss him like a soldier finally come home from war, but he got there eventually. Life has been bliss ever since; not without its ups and downs, but beneath it all, a sugar-sweet contentment.

No, it's never been a secret what Eddie wants. Not ever.

Buck presses his lips to Eddie's forehead briefly. He brings his mint chocolate milkshake up to his lips, his forehead crinkled with the same quiet contemplation he reserves for nature documentaries and Wikipedia rabbit holes.

"I want that with you." He nods at the family across the fountain: at the mother who holds her daughter to her breast, and the father who watches them both with adoration in his eyes.

"Which part? The marriage or the baby?"

"Everything," Buck says immediately. "All of it."

Eddie sits up. "You want to have a baby?"

"Doesn't have to be a baby." Buck licks his bottom lip. "There are a lot of kids Christopher's age and older in the system who don't have anybody, who will never have anybody. Older kids stand more of a chance of aging out than they do of being adopted, and I..." his voice trails off. He shrugs. "I want that with you."

Eddie's heart hammers inside his ribcage. Once upon a time, he wouldn't have been able to name the feeling that pulses through his chest, but he knows the taste of it now: it is joy, pale white and shimmering gold, like lightning and morning dew on his tongue.

"Did you just propose and tell me you want a kid at the same time?"

Buck huffs a laugh, but he doesn't deny it. "Something like that."

Something like that, he says, because it's not a proposal, not really. They were always going to end up here.

Eddie gets a hand in Buck's sweat-damp hair and draws him into a kiss, chasing the mint chocolate taste on his pink lips. He kept it chaste, but Buck is still breathing hard when he pulls back, eyes filled with lust.

"Home?" he asks hopefully.

Eddie nods and stands. "Home."

He reaches a hand for Buck, and Buck reaches back, because he always does. Because he always will.

"Hey." Eddie waits for Buck to meet his eyes. "I want that with you too."

Buck strokes the back of Eddie's hand with his thumb. "All of it?"

"Everything."
