kitsune tails aus where he outlives sonic are good but you know what else is good? sonic with a bittersweet smile on his face asking shadow to please, please take care of his little brother when he's gone. shadows the only one who could understand what tails is about to go through. sonic leaves to save the world and this time he does not come back. shadow is now the big brother to the heartbroken grieving child he once was.
tails won't accept this at first. sonic is going to come back bc he always comes back. slowly, though, his own logical mind forces him through the stages of grief: sonic is not coming back. there is no way he could have survived that. he's angry at first, but no matter how much he screams, cries, kicks, shadow doesnt leave. he's too stubborn for that.
shadow is there whenever tails is desperately searching for ways to bring him back. through ths long nights of running simulations and tests, when he falls asleep at his keyboard, shadow carefully wraps a blanket around him. idiot, shadow thinks. no wonder he wanted me to take care of you so badly.
nothing is working. every simulation fails. the emeralds refuse to give up their powers for this. with each passing failure tails cant even bring himself to get out of bed. amy comes over for a few days to help clean up and make food- but eventually she just shows shadow the basics of how to use a stove and has to leave to take care of herself. shes grieving too, after all. shadow makes boxed mac and cheese and hamburger helper meals. he decides to throw out the canned chilli in the cabinet
tails takes the help bc he feels so numb, this might as well happen. this goes on for longer than either of them are proud of. shadow comes in to clean tail's room one day (shadow can't bear it when things become too dirty) but he's too fast about it. he only gets halfway through before tails breaks down in tears, wrapping himself in a blanket, weeping
through sobs, tails asks him. "when does it stop hurting?"
shadow is silent for too long. what would sonic have done? what would maria say? then he slowly sits on the bed beside him. he puts a hand awkwardly on tails back. he speaks, quietly. "it doesnt. i am sorry"
tails misses affection so much he leans into shadow, who hugs him, and eventually hes weeping and shivvering in shadows lap, just like he did when he was small in sonics. when he calms down, he thanks shadow for staying with him, through hiccups.
shadow thinks about how pathetic this is. he knows exactly how it feels. "i promised him i would be here." he says. he doesnt want tails to end up like he is.
things do get better, but it takes a long time. at least now they have each other.

So I've seen DPxDC stories where Danny is Damian's twin brother or just full blood sibling in general and not biologically a Fenton at all, where he's Bruce and Maddie's son, Talia and Jack's son, stories where he's either Bruce or Talia's kid with some other random person and was adopted by the Fentons.
Stories where either Jack or Maddie is Ra's kid and Danny (and Jazz) are thus Damian's maternal first cousins.
I've even seen a few stories where Danny was just literally Ra's son, either by blood or by adoption.
I know of one specific post where Danny is Dusan's son and Mara's older brother, but that's it.
I have yet to see a single prompt where either of Danny's parents are descended of either Dusan or Nyssa even though both of them are far more than old enough to be grandparents.
Hell, Dusan is calculated to be around 750 years old by some people, while Nyssa canonically had her bloodline wiped out by the Nazis, a bloodline that included a great grandson and she has a confirmed birth year of 1775 (so she'd be nearly 250 years old in modern day).
So the idea of Damian's first cousin being an adult pushing 50 with kids older than Damian himself would be completely logical (if you go ahead of sticking the show aged DP characters into the 2020s).
Though to be honest if we go this route I'd pick different Fenton Parents and generational displacement from Ra's depending on which of Ra's kids Danny and Jazz are descended from.
If they're descended from Dusan, then I'd pick Jack as being his son, and Mara's older half brother, who is older than her by like 46 years.
The Fenton's are actually aware of their connection to a quasi-immortal assassin, but Jack and Maddie do their best to keep their kids out of that life.
Which Dusan isn't supper accepting about. But he also only discovered Jack when he was already an adult, and if he wants to be invited to his grandkid's birthdays and be allowed to drop Mara off at the Fenton house to be watched he just kind of has to accept that his son and grandchildren aren't interested in the Al Ghul legacy.
While if it's Maddie who's descended from the Al Ghul bloodline, then I'd want her and Alicia to be descended from Nyssa's line, specifically Vasily Vasilevich, Nyssa's great grandson.
Nyssa thinks he's killed by the Nazi's like the rest of her descendants but because he's an infant someone actually manages to smuggle him away before he actually enters any camp. He eventually ends up smuggled all the way to the United States, where he's given a new name, and raised as an American by the family that took him as their own while fleeing from the Nazi's and smuggled him to the state's in the first place.
So Maddie and Alicia are both Nyssa's great great granddaughters, while Danny, Jazz, and Dani are Nyssa's great great great grandchildren. The Fenton's (and Walkers if we go ahead with making that Maddie and Alicia's maiden names), have no idea that they're descended from a weird eco terrorist assassin cult...
Until Jazz insists on the family doing one of those at home dna tests after Maddie casually dropped family lore about how her dad wasn't the biological child of her grandparents, and that they'd ended up taking him in when fleeing Europe from Nazi persecution, and no one knew who his birth parents were or if any of his biological family survived or not. Or even the name his biological parents gave him.
Jazz just thinks this is going to be a fun family history project where nothing weird will happen, unbeknownst to her Tim Drake has created backdoor access to every single one of those at home dna testing databases he can find, specifically looking for hits on the Al Ghul family tree.
That man might be old as fucking dirt, but Talia's existence (and backstory of being conceived at Woodstock with a random hippy lady) is proof that Ra's is more likely than not still producing swimmers and going around banging random women much to Tim's horror.
And Tim wants to know if any oopsie Al Ghuls pop out of the woodwork before Ra's does, at the very least to try and prevent any more from getting indoctrinated into the League of Assassins.
I just feel like either one of these would really hammer home that Ra's line really is comprised of largely unaging immortals (if they have access to a Lazarus pit and want to), who's outer age doesn't really reflect their actual age at all.
WIth Mara and Jack being half siblings but also like 40+ years apart in age, or Maddie being Nyssa's great great granddaughter but looking basically the same age.
Because DC's never really pushes that when it comes to Ra's. Sure all of his kids are adults, but all of them are also seem to be frozen between the ages of like 30 to 50 years old, with Ra's himself looking around 70-ish, and then all of his grandkids (who we get to see) are literal children.
So if you were to take a family picture of Ra's and the descendants (who matter and) we get to see in the comics, it would just look like a normal family portrait or family tree. The grandparent looks 20-30 years older then the Parents/Aunt/Uncle generation, who looks 20-30 years older than the child generation.
Like I just feel there should be more family line fuckery going on with the Al Ghul family than there is in canon.
Or hell you could make Jack or Maddie Talia's kid if you go with the really old canon of Talia also actually being a lot older but using the Lazarus Pits to stay physically young. I think she's like 150 in that continuity but using the pits to stay in her 30s or so.
Then you could just have Jazz or Danny show up and Damian introduce them to the Batfam as his niece and nephew, played best with Damian being around ten, but Danny and Jazz in their late teens or even early 20s.

I read a fic once, and now I can’t remember it damnit, but where teen!Hollow had a bit of an schoolgirl crush on one of the knights that were training them. Because said knight was kind and teaching them both combat and courtly manners. I wanna say it was Isma???
But the point still stands, Hollow who can’t communicate or even being alive still having internal thoughts and opinions on the knights who are mentoring them. Wanting to spend more time with them even if they don’t realize it/let themselves. Admiring one or all of them greatly and not realizing it’s gearing into having a crush or infatuation territory because they don’t have the words for it. Especially if they’re reared with “you’re being trained by the best of the best” of course they’re gonna admire them.
I also like a post canon concept where Ogrim and Hollow can just sit and bond. Sit and reminisce a little bit.
OUGH, YES, I LOVE THIS CONCEPT. Teacher crushes can be cute if done right tbh. I think I read something similar tbh!
Teen Hollow having an unachievable crush typical of a kid is just so appealing to me. No matter how hard they try they can't stop themself from feeling, even if they try to curb stomp that feeling and rationalise it as only admiration for their teacher(s) (which technically they shouldn't be capable of either but anything to not come to terms with their own...aliveness I suppose?)
And you just KNOW if baby Hornet found out she would hold it over their head for ages
This actually gave me a bunch of cute ideas that I might sketch, thank ya!

Headcanon infodump ahead:
This poll reminded me of a half-assed AU idea I had a while back, where Beth and her brother Ben swapped places during the batarian raid on Mindoir. She died, he lived.
One of the things Beth had going for her after losing pretty much everyone she ever knew or loved was that her maternal grandparents were able to take her in and help her stabilize for a couple of years before she went off and joined the Alliance. Despite her best attempts to go off and do stupid shit, like lie about her age to enlist before she turned 18, their legal guardianship of her kept her from going too far off the deep end.
Ben was older by about two years. He wouldn't have had the same amount of time under the protective wings of John and Peggy before being legally allowed to join the Alliance without their permission. And that would not have been a good thing for him.
He would have been a completely unremorseful Butcher of Torfan. He would have let the hostages on Terra Nova die without a second thought if it meant killing one more batarian.
I started a game with him as my Shep a while back but never finished. Now I kind of want to get back into it. Hmm.

WIP/Kill your darlings time
Working on the foster care au again, and I've come to the sad conclusion that this scene probably just breaks up the flow too much. But I still really like it, so enjoy some domestic foster siblings:
Shiro returned home a few hours later. He retrieved Hunk and Lance from the basement--
(“Did you get lost? Did you get held captive by a ghost? Seriously, please do not to piss off the dead, we have enough issues without the paranormal.”)
dragged Keith in from the fire escape--
(“What were you even doing out there?!”)
and took away an illicit chemistry set from Pidge--
(“But, Shiro! I need to prove the basement isn’t haunted!”
“Not by bringing toxic chemicals in here, you’re not.”).
He also brought home three boxes of cheap, greasy pizza. They sat in a circle on the living room floor, eating straight from the box, the air filled with snickers and well-meaning bickering. Once the last slice was fought over and consumed (won by Pidge in a complicated and violent game of rock-paper-scissors), Shiro picked up the empty pizza boxes, grabbed his keys, and turned to Allura.
“You good to go home?”
For a moment, Allura had forgotten the apartment wasn’t home. It was tiny and cramped and excessively loud. But it also felt alive. Alive in a way she could now admit she hadn’t felt in a long time.
It wasn’t hers though. And Keith was giving her a look that suggested she was reaching the end of her welcome.
Besides, she was looking forward to a shower and wearing her own clothes. So she collected her things and waved goodbye to Keith and Lance, who were wrestling over use of the “good controller” and Pidge and Hunk, who were slyly (Hunk) and maliciously (Pidge) egging them on.
“Please don’t kill anything,” said Shiro in a long-suffering voice that was largely ignored. He shook his head and guided Allura out, locking the door behind them.
"You're joking about that, right?"
"Hm?"
"You don't think they'll actually kill anything."
Shiro's eyes took on a thousand yard stare. "Yeah," he said, voice bland and entirely unconvincing. "Sure. Let's go with that."
Allura chose to take that at face value. For her own sanity.
