“What do you mean he will be back?”

That’s what you asked your best friend, Joy, when you were about to enter the restaurant. That night, she relayed the news to you that Taeyong would be back at your reunion party for Christmas Eve at Taeil’s restaurant. You are very sure that he would not be around since he was busy this holiday season— that’s what you heard from Joy since you already blocked him in all your social media accounts.

Not that you didn’t want to see him— you really don’t — but you did not part on good terms right before he went abroad for about a year now.

Before he flew away, you were still close with him, best friends even.

Yet, one thing had made you distance away from him. You are afraid. You are afraid that at that time when you are deeply falling into Taeyong, the friendship you had built for so many years would crumble away.

You didn’t want that to happen so instead, you tried to distance yourself away from him. You thought that would be the solution, and yet, the feelings got stronger and stronger.

Taeyong became worried about you at that time. He tried to ask you once, but you just dismissed him with a shrug.

It became a habit to tell him that, until it moved to the point that you successfully distanced yourself away from him and at the same time, the closeness you had before, were not the same.

The next thing you knew, Joy had told you that he would be flying away to New York City since he had gotten a job there.

Of course, you will be so proud of him, however, you were so mad at your own irrational decision that you didn’t even get to tell Taeyong you were sorry to him.

So, you decided you tried making amends through SNS, and you told him ‘Sorry’ so many times in your voice messages days after he left. You tried to explain that you have been a bitch at him for not explaining what you really feel— though you omitted the part that you do like him that’s why you distanced yourself — but it seemed he just ignored it all.

The one thing that you regretted was that instead of dismissing what you really feel, you should have told what you really feel. Sometimes you just wish that you could turn back time.

“I thought you’re happy that he will be back again? Didn’t you tell me that you wanted to see him—?”

“Shush, Joy. That was just drunk-me talking, not sober-me.”

Joy chuckled at your reaction, and you playfully rolled your eyes.

“You know damn well that sometimes, when we’re drunk, we tend to tell the truth.”

While you didn’t tell Taeyong about what you really feel, it was Joy who saw through it all. From your hopeless ramblings to your frustrations about what happened on that day.

“Half-truth! Argh, let’s just get going, okay? Johnny and the others might be waiting now.”

You strode forward to the restaurant as Joy followed you inside.

You stopped on your tracks then Joy bumped into you, asking why you stopped. When she followed your gaze, she immediately knew why you were standing still. You didn’t expect that at that moment, the one you’ve been talking about with Joy had already arrived earlier than you two.

“Told you, he’ll be here.” Joy smirked.

You didn’t hear what Joy had told you next, but something in the moment makes everything stop except for you and him. It might be an exaggeration, but even your heart was jumping in glee when you had seen him again, yet your mind tells you not to.

You didn’t want to admit that seeing him right now had been a breath of fresh air after numerous failed dates from the past few months. You tried working on your dates but… How could he still make your heart feel like that even though your mind keeps screaming ‘stop’ ? How could he still be so charming yet out of reach? How could he still have that same effect for you?

Well, that’s Taeyong Lee, and You MIGHT be still into him.

You only snapped back from reality when you heard Joy call out your name so that you can follow her where your group of friends are seated.

When you thought nothing could go wrong— except you already knew it might have happened — Johnny and Yuta were the ones who told you that you should sit beside Taeyong, though you heard Taeyong say that he should switch seats with Doyoung instead. And even Doyoung, who was supposed to be on Taeyong’s side, had joined in with Johnny and Yuta’s teasing.

“Yong, it’s okay, I’m already fine with my seat.” Doyoung grinned, knowing it would annoy Taeyong. His friend rolled his eyes, then remained at his seat.

‘Sly bastards,’ you shook your head when you took a seat beside the empty spot beside Taeyong. You then pretended to pick up the menu in front of you despite knowing that your friends had already picked out and ordered the food. You just hoped they ordered your favorite calamari.

“As I was saying—” You heard Johnny say. “It’s been a while since we had Taeyong this close, and not just through our phones!”

“Sometimes, there would be days that I thought we would never see Taeyong out from our phones.” Yuta grinned, making your friends laugh.

Meanwhile you smiled lightly, and stole a glance at the man beside you, who was just shaking his head amusingly at both men.

“Of course, hyung had a reason why he came back, right?” It was Haechan who asked.

“There’s no one, Haechan.” Taeyong is quick to bite back yet, Jungwoo teased Taeyong.

“I think it’s because of a certain someone .”

But what Jungwoo thought could be a lighthearted joke, it made everyone silent for a moment. You can feel your friends’ gaze at you and Taeyong while you are busy pretending to choose your order from the menu.

“Oh, our order’s here!”

You thanked Johnny silently that he was so good at reading the room— and also to the server who arrived just on time. You are also glad that they ordered your favorite calamari.

Despite not talking for so long with Taeyong, you knew who might be the reason why he came back, and you know it wasn’t you . Back when the two of you were still close, he had been talking about a certain someone back then. For a long time, he was over the moon when he told you about that person. Most days, you kind of wish it was you .

Yet, you shook away those feelings inside your mind, and focused on talking with your friends as you all merrily enjoyed your food.

While you were listening to Haechan’s story about his encounter with an irrational client, you heard a faint call of your name beside you.

You didn’t need to know who it was.

“Yes?”

Despite the straightest face you had mustered up, you swear your butterflies on your stomach might be jumping up and down all from that greeting. How can he still do that?! It feels like you are acting like a school girl when she was around their crush!

“How are you?” He asked you.

“I am fine.” You replied bluntly as if you were not the one who distanced yourself in the first place.

“That’s good to know.”

You knew that Doyoung and Joy were listening to your conversation despite the loud cheery voices of your friends. Yet you ignored that— well, not really— since right after that, only silence came after that short acknowledgement between the two of you.

Despite being close like this to Taeyong after a long time, nothing seems to be like you had before. It feels like the cold winter air had crept up inside the restaurant, and decided to linger between the two of you despite the warmth of tonight’s reunion. It just felt like you were just thin air for him which makes you feel disappointed all throughout the night. Though you understand why he was being like that, but still!

Somehow, thanks to your friends, your reunion didn’t turn out to be disappointing at all.

You still manage to give your heartiest laugh whenever Jungwoo tells a joke, while Yuta follows it up with another until all of your laughs wrapped up the restaurant.

“By the way, did you mention that you’re about to leave the country this January?” Doyoung suddenly mentioned your trip, and all of your friends’ gaze fell onto you.

“Oh, that? Yeah, my visa and passport are already processed, and I’m just excited for that trip.”

“Then by all means, you and Taeyong might cross paths in NYC if ever.” Yuta commented with a grin.

Shit. You then stared at Yuta like you wanted to strangle Yuta’s throat so badly.

You then let out a forceful laugh, and said, “ That might be. But we know how busy Taeyong is. We might not even cross paths.”

“That can happen if you keep on avoiding me.” You were sure it was not supposed to be a mumble when it’s too loud for you to hear. You can feel Taeyong’s eyes on you. If one stare could kill, his gaze bores heavily that it could take you down— you can feel it on your skin.

“That was just one time.” You bit back.

You heard him scoff.

“One time? Then I just can’t believe it’s about a year in my time.”

You were about to retort but he suddenly stood up on seat, and walked outside without any excuse. Your friends only watched the two of you argue until the tension got heavy after you and Taeyong’s short yet snappy argument.

You could feel angry tears build up in your eyes, yet you forced it back, not wanting your friends to see your defeated face. You might be great at hiding your emotions except you just forgot that Joy knew how to read you. So, she did what she had to do. She excused herself, and called you out to go with her to the restroom.

You couldn’t help but let out your tears stream down your face out of frustration as soon as you two head out to the restroom.

“I’m sorry about that… I should have told you earlier that he might come.”

Joy patted your back and you shook your head.

“It’s fine. It’s just… How can I still not get over him? I really don’t get it, Joy. It still hurts seeing him to the point I want to avoid him, but at the same time, I really want to get back what we had before... I want it back.”

“I know that you really want that… You always tell me that. But are you sure you’re going to keep on going with the way you two are right now? I know you don’t want that, right? Maybe you can still talk it out with him. You know Taeyong, he wouldn’t just shut you out as his friend— as one of his longtime friends.”

Joy looked at you with a somber smile and that’s when you start to let your emotions break you down, and cry until you have your fill. Joy was there to comfort and hug you until you were done.

“Sorry for that, Joy.” You mumbled weakly.

“Nah, it’s fine. But you know, what’s better? Talk with Taeyong.”

You playfully rolled your eyes, yet you hugged her once again.

“This just feels like college again.” You chuckled as tears still wet from your eyes.

“Yeah, but this time? You’re gonna say what you really feel. But first, let me fix your make-up, you look like a mess.”

You chuckled along with her, and let her retouch your make-up and fix your hair before you head out the restroom.

By the time you left the restroom, it felt like it lasted longer than an hour, but in reality, it was only ten minutes when you were back again with your friends. You immediately apologized for what happened, and they understood it. No more teasing followed that, even surprisingly, Jungwoo and Yuta didn’t comment about that.

Then your gaze landed on the empty seat between Doyoung and your seat which means Taeyong hadn’t come back yet.

Maybe he won’t come back anymore.

“He was outside, don’t worry.” Johnny says, diminishing your worry that Taeyong might not be around already.

You muttered a ‘thank you,’ to Johnny before you walked towards the exit of the restaurant.

And Johnny was right. Taeyong was only a few meters away, and he was sitting on a bench in the mini garden beside the restaurant.

You were a bit hesitant to open your mouth. Yet, it would be another wasted time if you happen to let your doubts cloud your mind, instead of seizing the opportunity.

“It’s cold here, why haven’t you come back inside yet?” You started as you walked towards him. Yet, he still avoided you, gaze down on his feet, and remained silent.

Despite the cold shoulder he was giving you, you started saying:

“Taeyong, I’m really sorry…”

There was no response from him, and you continue on.

“It’s just… I really didn't know what to say at that time. I know it’s so fucking dumb now that we are already adults and I’ve been immature— I just don’t know how can I properly tell you.”

“Tell me what? Tell me that I was avoiding you when you were the one that avoided me for no reason?"

This time, Taeyong looked up at you, and gazed at you. You thought there would be resentment or hate in his eyes, instead, it was hurt. You don’t want that for him.

“Taeyong…” You called out his name and his gaze still remained at you.

“I’m sorry but I like you.”

There. You already fucking said it. You already fucking said what you really wanted to tell him for a long time now. You couldn’t last staring at his eyes as it captivates you completely, makes you forget whatever word you will say next, yet, you knew to yourself that you were stronger than that.

“I did like you for a long time, but I didn’t get to tell you because you like someone else. And as a friend I don’t want to ruin our friendship but instead, right now, I am trying to salvage what I can and—"

“Wait, hold on for a sec. You like me?! ”

This was far from what you had imagined. His expression magically turns into something you cannot understand. The way his tone seems to be in a way that you just told him the craziest things he had heard in his life. Like you just did say something out of this world. And what out of this world you did was to tell that you like him.

When you were about to say something, the next thing you heard was his laugh— he laughed like you just told him the most hilarious joke.

For so long that you had hidden your feelings, and now that you had the courage to tell them to Taeyong, he was here laughing like a one-year cold dispute didn’t happen between the two of you. Taeyong is really unbelievable and most importantly, unpredictable.

“I did like you, Yong. But you were into someone so I just decided to distance myself and then—”

You are surprised by the warm lips that caught your own. Your mind couldn’t process what the hell was happening, but all you know is that finally, you get what you really want for a very long time. You don’t push him away, instead, you place your hands on his biceps while Taeyong’s large hands fit onto the small of your back, and press you closer to his body.

You two are catching your breaths the moment you two pull away. The kiss feels like it lasted for eternity but it only lasted for a few seconds.

“All this time, I thought you were into Jae,” he said breathlessly before he pressed a quick chaste kiss on your forehead. “The way you cling into him, and have the most sparkliest eyes I’ve ever seen from you, I just know that you are into him. And that’s why I didn’t get to tell you that I like you, too.”

Wait, Jae? It was true that Jae was soooo handsome, and even gentlemanly. You couldn’t deny that you once liked him, but eventually, you’ve come to terms that you only view Jae as a friend. But to think that even the littlest things Taeyong observes, what details does he— Wait, you overlooked what he said last . Did you hear it, right? Did he just say that he likes you, too?!

“You like me, too?” It was your turn to be in disbelief.

“I wouldn’t just kiss someone I don’t like on this cold night, you know?”

He gazed at you like you are the most precious thing in his world. You could feel you could melt in his gaze. Yet, something inside you still makes you feel guilty despite the unexpected reconciliation between you.

“I’m sorry.” You muttered.

He shook his head, and cupped your face into his hands.

“I’m sorry, too. I know I should have talked with you before I left but I know that you needed space but honestly, I am just waiting for the right time despite what happened.”

“You do?”

He nodded, and kissed your forehead gently. The way he holds you just makes you not want to let go of him. He is here, and your worries are now lifted now that he’s now here with you.

“Thank you for waiting, Taeyong…”

You know how it’s not enough, and here you are wanting to make things right.

“Is there any way I can make it up to you?”

“I just want to be us again. Like before. I want that again.” He tucked a stray hair on your ear, and smiled at you.

You rest your head on his chest. You wish Taeyong didn’t notice the blush on your face that night because you are blushing like a fool. And although you know that Taeyong noticed that, he didn’t comment on it, instead he hugged you closer to him as the cold night breeze grazed your skin.

“Just a question, how long did you like me?” You asked him, lifting your head to stare at him. “Because the moment I knew that I like you was when that concert after finals in sophomore year.”

You only knew him because Joy’s boyfriend, Doyoung, happened to be Taeyong’s best friend, and it took a long time for you to know that you had fallen for him. But by the time you knew it, it happened to be when finals were done, and there was a concert held at your campus.

Then you didn’t know how or why, but that night when you were singing the lyrics wholeheartedly with him, it just feels like your heart suddenly makes that leap and feels giddy. It might be the adrenaline rush after finishing finals but that’s when you realize that Taeyong is indeed cute — charming, handsome, irresistible.

“I honestly want to kiss you under the fireworks that night.” You mumbled, fiddling your hands at the hem of his coat. You heard his chest rumble as he chuckled.

“Oh, really? Then I think I liked you longer than you know.”

You scoffed playfully, and hugged him closer. “Then when?”

He pretends to think for a second, then he rests his hands around your waist.

“Remember that day when you and I were alone at the library when Doyoung and Joy left us there? We were not close yet since it’s only been months since we’ve known each other.”

“And we are not usually left alone together, but when I asked you if you like One Piece, we talked for hours! We didn’t even realize that Doyoung and Joy came back.” You chuckle as you remember that moment with him.

“I really thought you were cute when you’re passionately talking about what you like. And I want to listen to your voice again and again.” He nuzzles his cheek on your temple.

“And that’s it ? That’s how you liked me?” You teased him.

He pulled away for a moment and said, “I could tell you everything one by one only if it’s okay that I can take you out on a date.”

Oh, you would definitely want to know all the details from start to finish. You miss this . You miss him dearly. You miss all of it.

“I think a date would be nice.” You smiled at him.

December might have fallen ill last year which caused you both a year-long cold dispute with him and yet, now, you couldn’t ask for more at that moment, and it just makes your heart swell with happiness so much, it fills your heart with ease and serenity now that you are with Taeyong once again, greeting Christmas with the warmest welcome to new beginnings.
