Analysis: I Don’t Want to Talk, WALLOWS

The singer and his significant other have broken up before, most likely being the significant other the one to leave the singer. He, very obviously, did not take it well. This episode sets up a precedent for the rest of the song. The singer feels his anxieties are justified because what he fears has happened before.

Their rocky relationship means that, instead of maturing and becoming more confident, the singer is plagued by those previous problems and break-up(s). Unless he’s with her, he feels he can’t know how the other person is feeling and so jumps into the worst possible conclusion, remembering all of these previous situations.

As he feels their relationship is doomed, the singer wants to end it as early as possible. He just wants to get it over with: the sooner it’s over, the sooner the pain will go away. However, he doesn’t want to actually break up with his lover, encouraging her to end things but not doing so himself. He is, in a way, “testing” her, seeing if she is actually into the relationship or if his fears are actually true and his partner has lost interest.

Additionally, breaking up means he doesn’t have to deal with his feelings and insecurities. Instead, he can just block everything out. A reconciliation would mean that the singer would have to face his fears and anxieties, which he doesn’t seem ready to do.

The singer’s worries are no longer as abstract as their partner falling out of love, but they are now focused on a certain person. He is bold, eye-catching, confident enough to wear a leopard pattern coat. Sharing a coat is something that can be quite romantic, thus the singer feels like their significant other would rather be in a relationship with this other “better” person.

His partner is described as someone desirable and trendy, which contrasts with the poor opinion the singer has of himself. He might feel she is too good for him or out of his league. Watching someone else notice their lover makes the singer feel like it’s more likely she will realise her current partner is below her and leave or replace him.

Her Kånken being “packed” could be a metaphor for her being about to leave him. She has gathered her stuff in her bag because she’s not coming back after this “send-off”.

Again, he is projecting his insecurities into the situation. He feels he’s not good enough for his significant other, which makes this other option seem like a more desirable one. In a relationship, it is a common feeling to wonder why the other person chose you at all when they could have anyone they wanted.

The singer goes on to even consider whether their potential break-up would even hurt her or shock her. However, the singer himself feels like his “mind’s wiped”: he can’t think about anything else. To him, they are on different levels of involvement in their relationship.

This other person is much more confident than the singer, or at least that’s what he believes. He wouldn’t overthink doing a crowd surf, he would just jump and trust a crowd would be there to catch him.

The singer is so affected that he ends up doing something he doesn’t do often: express his feelings or cry. He can’t keep bottling all of it up and he explodes, overwhelmed by the situation. It’s the only thing he can think of and it’s even distorting his perception of everything around him, including himself. He doesn’t want to open up like this, he would rather shut his feelings off and not have to deal with them because he is just going to end up getting even more hurt.

Ultimately, he still doesn’t want to leave his partner. He very obviously loves her, but his insecurities are getting the best of him and he is so convinced she is planning to leave him that he would rather get it over with now, and save himself from a pain he might actually be inflicting onto himself.

i made wallows bracelets!! :D

the ends are super messy but the elastic i have isn't great so i've had to knot them sm times to make sure they'll hold 😭

• the 'wallows' bracelet is inspired by one they have for sale as merch - i used the same colours & pattern but added the smiley faces myself (and put actual capital Ls instead of trying to pass off capital Is as lowercase Ls which really annoyed me about the official ones 😭)

• i made the wish me luck bracelet because i have big exams coming up in about 3 days (!!!!) and i thought it would be a funny little thing to wear in exams lol - the colours are inspired by the cover of remote - mostly black with a rectangle of brighter colours.

i'm going to make more wallows bracelets at some point (and i'll post pics!) but for now i'm going to make some for friends and maybe for some other stuff i like as well :)
