Not a Hothead (Reader x Firelord Zuko)
Requested by anonymous for Hey hey! Can I request some Zuko (atla) headcanons (gn s/o, preferably). His usually quiet and peaceful s/o is having a bad day and needs to blow off steam, and then get cuddles from himUp to you if it takes place before or after he's Firelord Tysm in advance ♥️
Tumblr media
Zuko tries not to complain so much about his duties as Firelord.
He's only just become an adult, but he's already facing the duties a much older ruler would have been trained for.
But he bears it all, because he has the responsibility, but also the privilege of helping form a better world.
And he has you by his side!
Although it's clear today that you are not in such a great mood.
He can practically sense the tension, noticing the way you pull your hands into the sleeves of your robes to conceal your clenched fists.
The gritting of your teeth
In between audiences with generals and representatives, he looks at you.
"Meet me in the private courtyard when we're free."
Your days aren't exactly stress-free, even as the consort of the Firelord. You need to help him with his work and, traditionally, keep the spiritual and physical wellbeing of the Royal Household all on the up-and-up.
Which means conducting traditional ceremonies with the Fire Sages, organizing the guard rotation for the palace, and working with officials in the Fire Nation capital to improve the lives of citizens.
And while you and Zuko definitely make time to spend with each other, restructuring an entire society that has spent the last one hundred years as the aggressors in a global war is certainly nowhere near a stress-free endeavor.
It's just a bad day today.
You're a little surprised at Zuko's words - he's not the greatest at being spontaneous.
But you still meet him in the private courtyard, and it's an interesting sign that he's shirtless.
You smirk. "So, am I going to be watching you train, like I did back when you were training Aang?"
Zuko suddenly looks surprised. "You watched that?"
You grin. "Oh, you think I fell for your sparkling personality?"
He laughs at the teasing before pointing to the training dummies he has set up. "Today, you're going to be training with me."
He blushes. "I just thought... well, nothing really helps me get rid of stress more than training, and then we could blow off steam, and..."
You chuckle. "And then we can take a bath and cuddle?"
He nods. "Sure. All night, if you want."
He takes you through some firebending martial art forms, which actually are surprisingly tough to learn, but feel really good when you start to get it right.
Zuko teaches you how to breathe properly, which really helps you feel so more energized and calm, even as you train.
Finally, after an hour or so of punches and breathing (which doesn't sound particularly fun, but Zuko actually does make it pretty fun to learn)
It helps to get out that aggression you had, and even more exciting is the promise of getting to take a bath and cuddle with him after.
After a beautiful luxurious bath with scented soaps and perfumed oils, you get to see Zuko in his loose robe and pants he wears for lounging around. He smiles as you lunge at him and tackle him onto a nest of cushions and bury your head in his chest to smell the clean scent of soap.
"I'm sorry I've been so out of it today." you whisper.
Zuko chuckles. "You do remember what I was like back during the war, right? Every day was a bad day. It's normal to feel stress, and... I want you to be able to count on me to help get you through it."
You give him a gentle kiss. "I love you, Zuko."
"I love you too."

A prompt: Hakoda meets his grandchild, the first steambaby
Sequel to She Lives In You
The Fire Nation had strange traditions and customs.
Some more strange than others.
Hakoda tried his best to adhere to them for his daughter and son-in-law's sake, but this one was far more aggravating than strange. His spiraling thoughts were interrupted by Suki's light laughter.
"You two are going to wear down a trough at this rate."
"We can't help it!" Sokka said as he continued to pace. "Katara said the seventh night right? I heard seventh night."
"I should have been there with her." Hakoda muttered while pacing in the opposite direction.
"And this is," Sokka counted on his fingers. "Four, six, seven! The seventh night!!!"
"What if something went wrong?"
"Guys!" Suki waved her hands. "Everything's fine. Katara and Zuko have the best healers at their disposal. Besides, if something was wrong, they would have told us by now."
"She right. Our lovely grandchild is in the best of hands." Iroh said while pouring more tea. "Though I do agree the wait is maddening."
Hakoda and Sokka shared a concerned look.
Suki laughed again then beckoned them to sit down.
"C'mon before you form a hole right through the floor."
Defeated, the father and son joined the others at the table. Hakoda massaged his aching head. He swore the past couple of days added several new gray strands of hair to his already graying head. Iroh placed a cup in front of him.
"Mint tea for the nerves."
Hakoda quietly thanked him and took a sip. It did help. Somewhat.
"Wow Dad, I've never seen you this nervous." Sokka said.
Hakoda grunted.
"Gran-Gran said he acted like this when you and Katara were born too." Suki said. "Actually did wear a trough through the snow."
Hakoda downed his tea, then placed his cup down firmer than he meant to.
"Don't you two dare make me wait this long. Understand?"
Iroh laughed as Sokka placed a hand on Suki's baby bump.
"Promise."
Just then the door swinged open. Hakoda and Sokka were first on their feet followed by Iroh, who was still quite nimble in his old age. But instead of the royal couple or a heralder, two out of breath figures ran into the room.
"We're here! We made it!" Aang panted.
"Aw man it's just you guys." Sokka said disappointedly.
"Good to see you too Snoozels." Toph shot back. "We would have been here on time but someone took forever shaving."
Aang sheepishly rubbed his freshly cleaned head. "I wanted to make a good first impression."
Hakoda resumed pacing as the pleasantries continued. He was glad to see Aang and Toph of course. But they were down to the bare minutes now.
The doors opened again. This time, a royal heralder entered. Everyone jumped up immediately.
"Esteemed family of Firelord Zuko and Royal Consort Master Katara, my I present to you," He glanced down at the scroll. "Princess-"
"Wait, I want to tell them." Katara said from behind as she and Zuko walked in decked in flowing white robes and cradling a small bundle.
The poor heralder was practically shoved aside as the family crowded around the royal couple.
"Let us see!"
"She's so tiny!"
"Give them some breathing room!"
Zuko eventually got them to settle down some by promising there was enough time for everyone to meet the new princess. Katara unwrapped her face and gently handed her to Hakoda. He couldn't take his eyes off the baby. Her soft brown skin and curious golden eyes warmed his heart.
"She's so precious..."
"Dad. " Katara said somewhat nervously. "Meet Kya."
The room fell into bittersweet silent as each person took in the gravity and importance of the news. The baby smiled and gurgled; eyes holding a sparkle Kya's used to. Long awaited tears trickled down Hakoda's face as he gazed at his granddaughter.
"Thank you."

Thanks for the prompt ❤️

Discoveries (That I Panic About)
Hakoda stood at the front of the ship, gripping the railings to see if he could see the Fire Nation and where his children were.
He had been very busy, slowly but surely rebuilding the Southern Water Tribe with Malina. But now he had time to visit.
As he traveled to the Fire Nation, where his children were, he wondered what the announcement they had mentioned in their letters was.
Katara had only spoke of it briefly, talking more about the young Avatar Aang, but she did say that it might surprise him, and it would be good for Water Tribe and Fire Nation relations.
Sokka was more enthusiastic, stating what Katara had said, but also that he was so pleased with the proposal that he agreed immediately. Aang, the Avatar, was apparently also excited for the announcement. Even Toph Beifong, who was all the way in the Earth Kingdom and busy with her metal bending school, had traveled to the Fire Nation.
So really, this declaration would be phenomenal, and would cause an entire chapter to be made in the history books.
But there was one specific letter out of the eyebrow-raising three that had surprised him immensely.
It was from Firelord Zuko.
Zuko, the poor boy, had sounded very anxious and desperate to please in his letter. He promised that he wasn’t forcing anyone do anything, and that he and Sokka had both agreed this would be the best route, and that he was very hopeful that Hakoda would be accepting of their decision.
And while Hakoda had to admit that he was a bit skeptical of how good this choice was, considering they were just children ruling over an entire nation, he did trust Zuko enough to not have any doubts that all parties had consented to this choice.
Suddenly there was yelling, shaking him out of his thoughts and alerting Hakoda that they were close to the Fire Nation now.
When they finally arrived, the entire Water Tribe was in for a slight shock as a massive furry bison flew in and roared. Of course they had seen the animal before, but perhaps not this close. Avatar Aang immediately leapt off his beast, apologizing profusely to the surprised warriors.
“I didn’t mean to scare you!’ He blabbered. “It’s just Appa trying to greet you! I’m so, so, so sorry! It won’t happen again!”
Hakoda gave him an amused smile, placing his hand on the young boy’s shoulder. “It’s quite alright, Aang.”
“Dad!”
Hakoda just had barely enough time to see a blurr of blue and brown before he was engulfed in a massive hug, almost knocking him off balance. He grinned warmly. “Katara! Oh, look at you! You’ve certainly grown.”
She beamed. “Oh, Dad, the preparations are amazing! You have to see it.”
“That sounds wonderful, Katara,” Hakoda said, “But I was wondering where your brother was?”
Katara smiled, albeit a bit mischeiviously. “Oh, he’s in the palace. He’s busy with preparations and stressing over every detail on this very, very special day.”
Hakoda frowned a bit. “Are you sure he’s okay? I don’t want him overworking himself.”
Katara shakes her head. “Don’t worry, Dad. With Zuko there, Sokka won’t even overwork an hour.”
Hakoda nodded, a bit hesitantly. “Well, if you say so.”
And then Katara and Aang started dragging him along, insisting that they can’t be late. Hakoda shot a confused and pleading glance towards Bato, who just shook his head and smiled.
Traitor.
*
“Katara! Oh, hey, Twinkle Toes,” Toph said. “And Hakoda.” She added, a bit like an afterthought.
Katara smiled at the younger girl. “Hey, Toph!” She replied, Aang following suit. “Do you know where Sokka is?”
Toph snorted. “He’s with Zuko, as per usual.” She responded, sounding incredibly exasperated. Hakoda assumed that his son and the Firelord were good friends.
Katara nodded. “That’s good. Come on, Dad!”
The dragging started up once more, with Toph following, but thankfully this time it was much shorter. They stopped in front of two massive bronze doors, accented with shining gold. It looked like a door for royalty, and it also looked very similar to the entrance of the Fire Lady’s room described in Sokka’s letters. Hakoda couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. “Why is Sokka in the Firelord’s room?”
Katara and Aang exchanged glances. They both smiled knowingly, as if Hakoda had said something a bit stupid and was being oblivious. He was mildly insulted by that.
“Oh, that’s not Zuko’s room! It’s Sokka’s.” Aang said casually, as if the knowledge that his son was living in a room made for royalty was inconsequential.
Katara pushed the doors open, revealing Sokka sitting at a desk, with Zuko beside him, incredibly close and having an arm around his son’s shoulders.
“Oi, Snoozles!” Toph yelled, and the two boys jumped apart. Sokka and Zuko both twisted their heads to face all four of them, their eyes blown ridiculously wide.
When Sokka saw Hakoda, his eyes grew even wider, something that had seemed impossible to Hakoda. “Dad!” Sokka exclaimed, and ran over. Sokka tackled him in a hug, which Hakoda was quick to reciprocate.
Hakoda laughed a little. “Look at you, Sokka!” He said. “You’ve grown into a fine young warrior.”
Sokka beamed with pride at the praise. Zuko looked on at them and smiled.
And this was when Hakoda discovered something very important.
He looked down.
And he saw…
A blue choker.
On his son’s neck.
Shocked, Hakoda shoved him away, confused.
Sokka looked hurt, while the others stared at him, mildly flabbergasted.
“You– you have,” Hakoda stutters through his words, “Since when? Who?”
Sokka looks confused at first, and Hakoda wants to shake him, begging for answers like a hungry, desperate man demanding apples from a tree. Thank Tui and La, Sokka understands. His face flushes right down to the roots of his hair and he glances at his sister desperately. “You didn’t tell him?!”
She shrugged, much to innocently. “It’s you who has the necklace. You tell him.”
“But– but… Ugh!” Sokka groaned.
“Sokka,” Hakoda said, very, very slowly. “When did this happen? And with who?”
Sokka paled, and swallowed. Then swallowed again. He looked like he needed a drink. And, admittedly, Hakoda did too.
“I– I,” He stammered. “It just happened, like, last week! It’s very, very recent news, Dad, I promise!”
“And who…” Hakoda started gesticulating wildly, “Was it that nice girl from Kyoshi? Suki?”
Sokka choked. “Dad, Dad, no! Spirits, no, we broke up! We’re just friends!”
“But then…” Hakoda’s gaze shifted towards the Firelord. There was a high blush on his cheeks. Hakoda looks back at Sokka’s necklace. There’s a Fire Nation symbol inscribed on the purple stone hanging from the blue collar. “You– you– Zuko??”
Sokka grimaced and nodded. “Dad,” He said, gesturing to Zuko, “Meet your future son-in-law.”
And Hakoda faints.
*
When Hakoda came back to himself, he finds he is in the palace’s infirmary.
He also finds his children and their group looking over him anxiously.
Instantly, Hakoda finds himself wrapped in another hug.
“Kids?” He said lowly.
“Glad you’re awake, Dad.” Katara said, smiling.
Zuko stepped forward, a little awkwardly because his Firelord garb was so heavy on him. He bowed. “Um, hello, Hakoda, sir,” He said. “I– I know I didn’t exactly make a, uh, good first impression as your future son-in-law–”
Hakoda stopped him when he took his hand. Maybe he should be against this. Maybe he should shout at Sokka, tell him to break it off, because this was the Firelord, and the Firelord was the leader of a nation that took so much from him.
But he couldn’t.
He couldn’t because a leader is not responsible for his nation’s past mistakes, they are responsible to fix them.
He couldn’t, because when he looked at the Firelord, all he could see was a young, terrified boy named Zuko. A young boy who grew up to fast, and was forced to save the world, a heavy burden on his shoulders.
“It’s quite alright,” He said honestly, “I was… ah, very… shocked?”
Toph snorted. “Seems like an understatement.” Hakoda ignored her.
“But, I must assure you,” He continued, “I approve of this. You were right, Katara, in the fact that this might strengthen Water Tribe and Fire Nation relations, but I can also see how close you and Zuko are, Sokka.”
Sokka looked like he was going to cry, and he hugged Hakoda even tighter than before. “Thank you, Dad,” He whispered. “Thank you.”
And so, is really any surprise that Hakoda cries during the announcement?
He is just so, so proud.
*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&

The Times Azula Showed Love, Care, and/or Kindness to Zuko Through Her Actions
Giving him an opportunity to "redeem himself" at Ba Sing Se and then delivering on her promises to him by giving up her status as heir to the throne so that Zuko could come home; convincing Ozai to accept Zuko again("The Crossroads of Destiny")
Lovingly reassuring Zuko (including through touch) that he had made the right decision in helping her and telling him that he had "restored [his] own honor" in her eyes. ("The Crossroads of Destiny")
(this will be controversial) When she came to look for Zuko at royal gardens in The Awakening, I think it's pretty clear that she was trying to reassure him because she knew he was anxious and uneasy. Then, of course, she catches on that he might be hiding something from her.
Lying to Ozai and implying that Zuko was responsible for capturing Iroh (which Zuko had almost nothing to do with), maybe to make sure that Ozai would never see Zuko as a traitor again, even if Ozai became disappointed in him again("The Awakening").
Warning Zuko to be careful and not get caught if he insists on visiting Iroh ("The Headband").
Trying to reassure Zuko when he's anxious about being sent on a forced vacation ("The Beach")
Insisting Chan and Ruon-Jian invite both her and Zuko to the party. ("The Beach")
Actively going out and seeking a deeply sad Zuko in their families old beach house in order to provide emotional support for him("The Beach")
Helping Zuko sort through his emotional issues ("The Beach")
Giving Zuko the information he asks for, even though it's common knowledge he should already know ("The Avatar and the Firelord")
Trying to reassure Zuko when he complains he wasn't invited to the war meeting and correctly telling him that this isn't a sign of Ozai's disfavor and that he's welcome there ("Nightmares and Daydreams")
(Potentially) butting in and cutting Zuko off at the war meeting right before he says something that might get Ozai pissed at him ('"Sozin's Comet").
The Times Zuko Showed Love, Care, and/or Kindness to Azula Through His Actions
Helping her in the fight with Katara and Aang at Ba Sing Se(Maybe???) ("The Crossroads of Destiny")

Toph and zuko “I thought we were friends” and “wasn’t I worth a goodbye?”
"Where are you going?"
Toph can feel the familiar footsteps as Zuko approaches, which is good, considering the way his voice echoes in the open hallway. She doesn't bother to turn around.
"What does it look like?" she asks, an edge to her voice she's too tired to conceal.
"Like you're about to walk into a wall," he says, and Toph smirks at the sense of confusion in his voice.
"Into, through," she shrugs. "Why do you care?"
"Why do I--" Nothing burns, but she can smell the singe anyways. "I thought we were friends. You're sneaking out in the middle of the night--"
"I'm not sneaking," Toph cuts him off. "And it's not my fault you people think the middle of the night is a weird time to be up."
"Did something happen?" she hates the worry in his voice.
"No. And that's the problem." She frowns. His foot, in a fancy silk slipper, slides backwards on the polished floor, a tiny whisper of noise her bending catches better than her ears. "I can't live like this. There's too many people, and they're all--bustling. Sweeping the floor I'm walking on, acting like I'm going to drown if I so much as step towards your Turtle-duck pond. The Gaang fussing was bad enough till they figured out I'm more competent than any of them, I can't take it another minute of this. Happy?"
"Why didn't you say something?" Zuko asks, moving to sit. She can hear the silk of his robes brushing against itself in the folds. Someone must have alerted him, and he can running, even though the air was chilly with night. She's determined not to let him pull what his uncle does. But she sits.  The bench is oddly out of place, cooled lavastone, without glaze or polishing to make it seem like something it isn't. She runs her fingers over the lumpy surface.
"You and everyone else have countries to rebuild," she says. "You've got stuff to deal with. And don't try to say I'm more important than that, because of the two of us, I'm the one who's had parents treat me like the most precious object in the world and it really, really sucks. Also, I'm not an idiot. "
"I wasn't going to say that," Zuko lies.
"Yeah. So I just figured I'd get out of here for a while. Go explore for real. Who thought I'd miss camping?"
"Toph..."
"And you can't forbid me to go. I don't answer to you, Firelord," she finishes.
"I wasn't going to. I just.. You were just going to leave? without telling anyone? Wasn't I worth a goodbye, at least?"
"I never say goodbye," Toph says, tapping her bare toes on the polished stone flags. Something's not right with Zuko's heartbeat, with his breathing. It takes a moment for her to place the changes. He's crying. Which...Fuck. "It's not like I'm not coming back. You know that, right?"
"What?" Zuko says, trying to disguise the sound. "I... yes. Of course I do."
That's a lie, too.
"Zuko. I'm not going to flee into the woods forever. I just need some space for a bit. I don't miss camping more than I'd miss you guys. I'll come back. I promise."
"When?"
She sighs. "Couple of days. Okay?"
"...okay. You know Katara's going to kill you."
"Pft, she can try." She grins, and wonders if he could see it. "Thanks,  Zuko. for understanding.  I'll remember for next time."
"I'll see you in a few days," he says, suddenly formal. "Please don't break my palace wall."
"I'll put it back," she says. "Bye, Zuko."

Re-reading the post show atla comic "The promise" makes me realize one thing:
Zuko can't catch a fucking break holy shit, why did they let my boy be the firelord? Idk what's more depressing, his banishment arc or his "I'm still a teen and I've just become the firelord, I am tired and paranoid" arc 😨 like Zuko was genuinely tweaking.

Toph's Characterization, ATLA Comics - A Dissertation
Chapter One - The Rift (Part One)
I'm going to start with the third entry of the 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Comic Series because Toph's characterization isn't too off-putting in 'The Promise' (though it still had many infuriating panels that I'll get to in the future) and she isn't present in 'The Search'. So, we'll start off with 'The Rift' - the first and only Toph-centric comic, despite being a fan favorite character and one of the main characters of the show.
And, the very first panel with our favorite Earthbender is a slap to the face to Toph's character arc as well as her personality:
Tumblr media
Toph Beifong is questioning whether or not Earth Kingdom citizens can united alongside Fire Nation citizens.
This is coming from the first member of the Gaang that warmed up to Zuko when he presents himself in the Western Air Temple (and willingly went to speak to him, despite everyone's disapproval).
Tumblr media
This is coming from the same person who willingly sat down for a cup of tea with Uncle Iroh. And even after discovering he was a member of the Fire Nation Royal Family, she still thought and spoke highly of his character (Aang does state that Toph mentions that Iroh gives great tea and advice).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is coming from the same person who travelled across the Fire Nation, observed how their is good in evil; fought beside the Fire Nation Prince to stop the war and even reassured him that HE WAS GOOD when he doubted himself during the Ember Island Play!
Tumblr media
Obviously, Toph may have her doubts and concerns given they're discussing the government of a Fire Nation Colony - territory that once pertained to the Earth Kingdom. And yes, hostility and dissatisfaction may be a legitimate concern. However, it's the way she phrases her sentence that irks me. It almost seems as though Toph is doubting the possibility of genuine unanimity forging between the two different Nations. And it's really off-putting because Toph had never ONCE, during her screen time on ATLA, questioned the possibility of blossoming friendships with people of the Fire Nation.
It's also a lesson Aang teaches her in 'The Avatar and The Firelord':
Toph: It's like these people are born bad
Aang: No, that's wrong. I don't think that was the point of what Roku showed me at all (...) Roku was just as much Fire Nation as Sozin was, right? If anything, their story proves anyone's capable of great good and great evil.
And now, we commence my substantial hatred for the portrayal of Toph's manners:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, in the original series Toph does have a few scenes (that I can recall, three) where she does something that is generally un-ladylike and bad-mannered. But, I cannot understand what it is with Bryke and their obsession of depicting Toph being rude and gross in almost every other scene.
In 'The Promise' we had a few other scenes and 'The Rift', not fifteen pages in, and we get these two scenes almost back-to-back. And, it no longer correlates to Toph's want to disconnect from her pompous upbringing. This is how Bryke choose to write their "tomboy" coded characters, and it's disrespectful.
We don't see any other female character do these types of actions. Not Katara, not Suki, not Ty Lee, not Mai, not Azula. Toph is exclusively the only character that acts this way. And it really leaves a bad taste in my mouth once you come to terms that Byrke associate "tomboy female characters" with unhygienic, gross and rude behavior. You can write Toph desiring to abandon her rigorous upbringing and be less traditionally feminine without portraying her this way. It's just perpetuating a very nasty stereotype that's already been constructed with this type of media.
And don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with depicting female characters doing things that are considered unladylike (example: burping, picking their teeth, etc.). But, how come no other female character acts this way? We never see none of the other traditionally feminine characters, such as Katara or Mai, act this way. Like I said, it's feeding into a very weird and harmful stereotype.
Tumblr media
Oh boy.
So, we enter the central conflict between Aang and Toph.
To contextualize this, whilst Aang is explaining the Air Nomad Traditions to the air acolytes, he ends up saying "That's just how it's done." and it triggers Toph's past childhood trauma growing up secluded and misunderstood by emotionally neglectful parents. I actually really enjoy that we're exploring Toph's past and her own traumatic experiences; it makes her a more compelling, relatable and human character and gives her personality a lot more depth.
However, it's what comes next that infuriates me to my core (and the reason why I wanted to write this monstrosity of an analysis). Toph becomes arrogant, rude, insensitive and disrespectful to Aang and to his culture.
It's just odd we never explore this trauma beyond this. The trauma that Toph has, while interesting and a great set-up for some internal character work, it's utilized solely to progress the conflict (and once it's resolved, Toph's inner struggles are abandoned). And it's odd that this traumatic event in her childhood is the setup for her sudden and spontaneous love for the future and her avoidance of her past.
It's even odder when you remember that in the original series, Toph never wanted to flee her past. She loved her parents and felt remorse for leaving them. She just wanted them to understand that she was a capable fighter and see her beyond her blindness.
For you to understand my disappointment in this particular characterization, we first have to analyze Toph during ATLA. Throughout the two seasons where she is present, Toph had never once disrespected Aang's culture or his spirituality. On the contrary, she seemed amazed with the Western Air Temple the moment she sensed it's architecture beneath the cliffs: "Wow ... it's amazing!"
Aang reassured her that friendships carry on throughout lifetimes (and it comforts her);
Tumblr media
When he's meditating, she's the only one remaining quiet:
Season 3, Episode 6: The Avatar and The Fire Lord
Katara: Do they have bathrooms in the Spirit World?
Sokka: As a matter of fact, they do not.
She's always showed nothing but respect for Aang, his culture and his duties as the Avatar and last airbender, yet, now, for some reason she is characterized in such an unflattering and antagonistic light. And it's crazy to me that Toph is suddenly someone who resents the past and is all about the future... since when has this been one of her defining character traits?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It just... keeps going... And it's so sad to see. This just makes Toph so unlikeable and this just isn't the same Toph we got to see in the animated series. And it what world would Toph Beifong choose a random dude she just met over her friends, especially her FIRST FRIEND (Aang)?
Tumblr media
AND NOW SHE IS LYING TO PROTECT THIS RANDO BECAUSE HE ADMIRES HER?
In what world would Toph do this? And don't tell me this is because Toph is enamored with Satoru. Toph, canonically had a crush on Sokka, yet she never did anything stupid nor disrespectful for Sokka; she never compromised her morals or beliefs to protect Sokka.
And I cannot fathom Toph being this unbothered by the pollution. True, she was never a big environmentalist in the main series; however, I would like to believe that Toph would advocate for the protection of her element, especially given she is so in tune with nature: Badgermoles taught her how to bend, she sees through earth, her element is centered around nature... I just can't rationalize Toph being this indifferent to the lack of care for the environment.
Tumblr media
Sigh... Here's a little montage of Aang's ability to maintain inner peace:
Season Two, Episode Eight 'The Chase': Aang lashing out on Toph despite Toph being the only one to justify how Azula, Ty Lee and Mai kept finding them.
Season Two, Episode Eleven 'The Desert': Yelling at Toph and blaming her for Appa's kidnapping, despite Toph being unable to see nor protect Appa, because she was protecting her friends.
Season Three, Episode One 'The Awakening': Aang being so frustrated that the world thinks he's dead that he flies away at sea, during a storm.
Season Three, Episode Seventeen 'The Ember Island Players': Literally get's so infuriated with an unreal depiction of his relationship with Katara that he forcibly kisses her, because immaturely possessive and quote: 'Overreacting? If I hadn't blocked my chakra, I'd probably be in the Avatar State right now!?
'The Promise' - Part One: After Katara is held by Zuko and he enters the Avatar State.
Yes, Aang sure is in tune with his inner peace.
It's also hilarious that they really think Toph is the one provoking the earthquakes when she's the best earthbender alive and is more in tune with her bending then any other bender there. I mean, I get it we have to shove the "everyone loves and defends Aang" but not even Sokka came to Toph's defense? Katara?
Another thing that really rubs me the wrong way is that Toph was literally pushed into Aang's life because she "waits and listens" - yet, here, Toph is anything but patient. She's explosive and reactive. During ATLA, whenever she fights, she always has a moment afterwards where she listens to the other person. The best examples are with Katara in 'The Runaway'. She's actually considerably patient if you actually analyze her character throughout the series and isn't as hotheaded as she's portrayed here.
Not everything in this first part is horrendous. I do enjoy that we get confirmation (that unlike a certain canon couple) Aang and Toph are able to have their squabbles and then talk things out to understand one another's perspective.
Tumblr media
We also get to see them work together despite being at odds. And, just like in the animated series, they work in really great harmony and comprehend the other without saying many words. I really enjoy that we get to see them put their differences and disagreements aside and work like a unite when it's called for. That is something that I really enjoy about Taang and their dynamic.
Tumblr media
We also get a lot of cute panels with Toph and Aang - and man they are a really good looking couple. In a later analysis, I'll get more into depth on their relationship in this comic (and her relationship with her friends), but for this initial part it wasn't too badly butchered.
And's that's it for the first part of this analysis.

As long as you want
Masterlist
Pairing: Azula x Male!Reader
Slot: Dirty talk+First time+Age difference
A/N: I wrote this with the reader being around 25 and Azula being around 20
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Y/N I got another mission for you” Your leader threw you a scroll, one with a black ribbon. A message from the castle, you unravel the scroll and it told you to come to the palace immediately. You quickly found out that Firelord Azula was the one who sent for you,she wanted you as her personal bodyguard.
That was about three years ago,you eventually got close to her. Enough to the point where she confessed her feelings to you,and you start dating. It was a secret at the start but eventually everyone knew. Recently she was getting a lot more handsy with you, constantly trying or having her hands on you. She wasn’t normally affectionate which made you finally ask her.
“I want to…”She trailed off.
“Want to..” She avoided looking at you
“I want to have sex with you!” She suddenly shouted, before realizing what she said her face was bright red.
“Let’s do it”
“What..”
“You’re not backing out on me now,are you?”
“You’ve done this before?” She suddenly asked as you started taking off your clothes.
“You haven’t?” She once again avoided your eyes, you touched her cheek. “Just follow my lead”
***
You had her bouncing up and down, firmly gripping her hips. She moved faster and faster, her moans getting louder as you rubbed her clit.
“Y/N” She tried catching her breath but with her moaning like crazy she couldn’t. You forced her down quicker as you moved your hips at the same time making her cum. You let her catch her breath. “Y/N,that was-” You flipped her onto her back.
“You really think that’s all I got,we’re not done, not until the sun rises”
“You can’t be suggesting that-” You cut her off once again”
“Oh,I’m not suggesting I’m telling you exactly what’s going to happen. I hope you don’t plan on doing anything tomorrow, including walking” You kissed her as you started moving, she wrapped her legs around you. “For someone who’s never done this you sure are eager” You whispered into her ear.
“Just do that again,it felt really good”She whispered the last part, but you caught it. Biting down her on her neck as you pounded into her. “Y/N,f-faster” You kept going again and again. Until her neck was red and purple, and you were sure her legs wouldn’t carry her anymore.
“So,what did you think?”
“I’ve never felt something like that, could we go again?”
“Give me a minute”
“I thought you said, until sunrise. You’re not backing out now are you?” You pointed to the window, revealing it was sunrise.
“I don’t break my promises, but we cloud go as many times as you like”

On ur post abt how the promise showed katara flexing her- frankly amazing- diplomatic skills: How do you think they could have handled the Yu Dao story better if they'd ended the show with platonic kata.ang/ future zk endgame in mind??
Just since it's quite an interesting plot to explore, and katara has some good moments, but I think it got drowned by weird (ooc) writing choices. Zuko and Aang get hit by the idiot ball hard. Obviously there's the whole 'promise' drama (as if half the finale wasn't dedicated to aang refusing to kill a firelord under any circumstances), but also kata.ang moments like the Avatar-state talk down + katara's vision; not to mention the bits where they undermine zk's canon friendship (the infamous 'ur hurting me' panel and katara agreeing with /encouraging the promise at all.)
this is a great question and this made me think of one of my favourite ZK fics, Refraction by caroe3725, which has a great re- interpretation of Yu Dao!
I think if Katara was with Zuko even just as a trusted friend, he never would have been going to Ozai, which means the conflict would not have escalated to the extent where Zuko decides to play hardball and Kuei retaliates. Katara would have supported his pov that families shouldn’t be separated, while also being adamant that Earth Kingdom citizens deserve to not be second class citizens in their own home.
the biggest issue with the titular promise is that it puts them all in a situation where they’re fretting about whether to kill their friend, instead of the actual difficult question of how to be fair to the citizens of Yu Dao without forcibly separating families that now don’t belong in either FN or the EK. I imagine Katara still playing a mediator role between Zuko and Aang, but not in a way where she’s like…preventing a brawl. Instead, she would be leading negotiations on how to restructure the town so that the Fire Nation is no longer at the top of the hierarchy. I think it would likely still end with Yu Dao independence, but with a greater emphasis on Katara’s first reaction to Yu Dao (that there’s serious wealth inequality) and how the FN can be responsible for remediating it, probably in the form of reparations for social programs. Certainly that would make it into a boring political comic, but I happen to find that interesting!

Fic Idea - Zuko is skin and bones (Jetko)
Zuko is still a teenage boy and they need a shit ton of food. But I can easily see how him becoming a firelord might lead him down a path of not eating enough.
He still has the metabolism of a teenager, but all of a sudden he is super busy and probably pretty stressed out. There are a so many meetings and obligations, so little time.
Although his stint as a refugee made him more appreciative of food, he doesn't have hunger in his bones the same way that Jet does.
Jet lived for years on scraps, whatever they could steal and harvest from the forest. Fuck, imagine the winters he had to go through. How he had to keep an eye on everyone and make sure food was divided not based on hunger, but based on who could safely go without that day.
So when Jet sees Zuko thin in a way that he shouldn't be, all the alarm bells start ringing. Zuko's plate gets filled with extra portions when he looks away. And yet, he's still too thin. Jet frets over the situation, asks the cook and the palace healer what's wrong afraid that Zuko might be sick.
But no, he's just too busy to eat. What. Why is he so stupid? Why won't he eat??!
Even after getting past the whole "by the way, the dude you're banging is a firebender... and the firelord" Jet still finds plenty of opportunities to rage against him.
Jet: My bf is dying. There's no other plausible explanation for this. 😢 Everyone else: Uh no, he's just not taking care of himself. Jet: That's a real thing? *hands Zuko more food* Zuko: Thank you. I forgot to eat lunch today 🥰 Jet, in a silent rage: How is this man still alive.
.
(author is currently on a weight-gain diet. It might sound more fun than the reverse, but I promise you it is not. It's just as awful.)

Day 2- Meet the Family
Ty Lee x Azula
A/N: I enjoyed this prompt, it kind of ended up as a crack fic
You can also read it here on archive of our own
Ty Lee was, understandably, nervous. Meeting with the Firelord and the Firelord’s family was no small thing, even more so when you’re being introduced to them as their daughter’s girlfriend. Azula noticed her nervousness.
“You’ll be fine. They love you already.” she reassured Ty Lee,
“Yes, but that was back when I was your friend. That doesn’t mean they would be happy that you want to settle down with me.” she bit on her lip until it bled,
“Are you suggesting you want to get married?” Azula asked, cool as ever,
“You are not helping.”
“I promise, they’ll all love you. Didn’t my mom always say that she wished we would stay friends forever? We’re just fulfilling her dreams, so don’t worry.” she says with a wink,
“I’m more worried about your dad.” Azula squeezes her hand reassuringly,
“I’ll be right here with you the entire time, it’ll be fine.” Ty Lee gave her an unconvinced glance but took a deep breath, and stepped through the doos,
“Mom! Dad! Zuzu! I gotta tell you something!” Azula called,
“Why did you have to summon us to the garden in the middle of the day?” Zuko asked,
“Is your hearing impaired Zuko? I just said I had something to tell you all.” Azula sniped back,
“Kids, not the time. Azula, what do you want to tell us?” Ursa interrupts just as Zuko opens his mouth to protest,
“She’s pregnant.” Ozai said solemnly, Azula rolled her eyes.
“What? No- Dad I’m not pregnant. Will you let me finish my sentence?” Ty Lee had to cough into her hand to stifle a giggle.
“So you guys know Ty Lee and I are friends right?” Azula finally starts,
“She’s pregnant.” Ozai declares confidently,
“Ozai! Nobody is pregnant!” Ursa chastises, punching his shoulder
“You are.” he says sulkily,
“No I’m- wait what?” Ty Lee watched this exchange with a renewed interest. This was sure to be an interesting story to tell her and Azula’s kids. Her face temporarily reddened at the thought of her and Azula, and the future, and the prospect of having kids.
“Can we worry about this later? I still need to tell you guys something.” Azula’s voice interrupts her train of thoughts,
“Then just tell us Lala, we literally found out that we’re having a new sibling before we found out about your cryptic message.”
“I told you to stop calling me that, anyways will you all please be quiet.” Now it was Ty Lee’s turn to put a reassuring hand on her shoulder Azula took a deep breath before continuing,
“What I’ve been trying to tell you is that Ty Lee and I are dating.” there was no response. Ty Lee stiffened, stepping back. She waited for the yelling to start, for either Ursa or Ozai to start blaming each other for the way Azula turned out-
None of that happened.
What did happen was that Ozai took off his glasses and sighed,
“Dad?” Azula asked tentatively and Ursa came to rest her hand on her daughter’s shoulder,
“Don’t pay him any mind dear, he’s just bitter that he owes me thirty gold.” Azula furrowed,
“Wait- why does he owe you 30 gold-” Ty Lee started, before realizing,
“You had a bet going on whether Ty Lee and I got together?” Azula all but shrieked,
“Not whether, but when. If you had confessed a week later I would’ve lost, so thank you sweetheart.” Ursa put her other hand on Ty Lee’s shoulder, “But sincerely I want to give my congratulations, I’m so happy you have found each other, and wish you many years of happiness.”
“Thank you.” Ty Lee replies just as sincere and Ursa patted her shoulder,
Zuko stepped forward and put a tentative hand on her shoulder,
“I think this is the part where I threaten you and tell you if you ever hurt my sister I’ll make your life hell etc.” he said with uncertainty, Ty Lee immediately tenses,
“You don’t have to!” she added helpfully,
“Oh good, it didn’t feel right.” Ty Lee let out a sigh of relief, “Anyways, I owe Mai twenty dollars, so if you’ll excuse me.” and Zuko exits without another word,
Azula squeezed her hand and leaned over, kissing her cheek
“I told you they’d love you.” she whispered into her ear,
“You were right.” Ty Lee laughed, and Azula smiled back at her, which never failed to make her stomach do acrobatics.
“Now then, Ozai, what the hell do you mean I’m pregnant? I mean, I feel I would know before you did.” Ursa asked,
“Well when you had your physical check up last week, the physician’s noticed something abnormal, and when I checked in with them yesterday they said it was most likely a pregnancy. I didn’t have the time to tell you until right now.” he stated matter-of-factly,
“Don’t think of the implications.” Ty Lee whispered into Azula’s ear,
“What do you mean- Spirits! Ty Lee, I wasn't even thinking of that.” Azula lets go of Ty Lee’s hand to cover her face. Ty Lee laughed, wrapping her arms around Azula’s shoulder. She leaned against her shoulder content to live in this moment forever.
A/N: Ozai? Ursa? Being good parents? It’s more likely then you think.
