List of some movies that I enjoy and the books they’re based on which often have different vibes than the movie but both are equally good in different ways
Howl’s Moving Castle: The book is titled the same but has very different vibes (movie is more whimsical fantasy while book feels more like realistic fantasy if that makes sense) and also has two companion books in which Howl and Sophie make appearances! Book by Dianna Wynne Jones
Kiki’s Delivery Service: The book is titled the same but again very different vibes (Movie Kiki deals with depression and losing your passion and Book Kiki is cute little witch dealing with people’s problems in cute little witch ways) Book by Eiko Kadono
Stardust: Book titled the same but different vibes (movie is intense and life threatening adventures, book is more fun travel adventures and much slower paced) Book by Neil Gaiman
The Secret of Moonacre: The book is titled The Little White Horse (similar to Stardust the book is a lot slower paced and less life threatening adventures but just as fun and interesting as well as a lot of characters have more depth to them than in the movie) Book by Elizabeth Goudge
The Last Unicorn: Book has same name (from what I remember the book is almost word for word exactly like the movie) Book by Peter S Beagle
Ella Enchanted: Book has the same name (ok this one is a little more controversial. In my opinion the book has a lot more depth and is a lot more interesting in the world building and characters, and the movie is a horrible adaptation. But if you look at the movie as a completely separate thing it is still enjoyable and has fun songs and is a classic from my childhood) Book by Gail Carson Levine
Mary and the Witch’s Flower: The book is titled The Little Broomstick (I have yet to read it but I have just checked it out so I will make sure to update this once I’ve read it! I expect the book will probably have better world building as the movie was fun but didn’t have time to go into depth and the mechanics of the witch’s world) Book by Mary Stewart
Earwig and the Witch: Book titled the same (I also have yet to read this book but have just checked it out and will update later. I think it’ll probably be similar to what I expect with the Little Broomstick where it will probably show a more developed world) Book by Dianna Wynne Jones
Ronja the Robber’s Daughter: Technically not a movie but a tv series. Book has the same name (I also haven’t read it but have just checked it out and will update but I think the show was very well done story wise though the animation wasn’t my favorite and I expect that it probably followed the book fairly closely) Book by Astrid Lindgren
Avalon High: Book has same name and similar plot but characters are switched around (this is actually one where I like the movie a lot better. I feel like the book is extremely predictable and does exactly what you expect to happen while the movie switches it up in a fun way that I feel like also makes sense and isn’t just doing it for the shock factor) Book by Meg Cabot
Tales From Earthsea: One book from the Earthsea Cycle has the same name (I’ve only read the first two books and so technically haven’t gotten to the book that the movie has been adapted from but it’s on my list and I will update once I eventually get to it. So essentially I’ve read the prequels that lead up to the events in the movie and I’ve heard the movie is vaguely different but has similar themes and plot points to the book) Books by Ursula K Le Guin
That’s all I can think of for now but if you have any suggestions to add let me know and I’ll see if I’ve watched the movie and read the books and if so I’ll make an addition to this post!

My fic for the Piarles Fantasy Fest
Harry Potter AU + Hanahaki
"Do you like Quidditch?" He says this, looking surprised. "Most of the time, Papillonlisse people don't." Charles nods with happiness. "I love Quidditch! My favourite team is the Cavalli Rampanti, and yours?" He asks after he shows him that he has in the notebook some of the cards of the players and some drawings of what it seems are some plays. "Mine too!"

Well, if nothing else I read a shocking number of B books this month. I felt very fortunate this month -- I've been listening to a lot of audiobooks lately because of general stress and a lack of free time, but I managed to settle into quite a few physical books over February. It's honestly been a bit of a relief to have the time and headspace to curl up with a book.
Tumblr media
A Boy Called Bat / Bat and the Waiting Game / Bat and the End of Everything
I read this trilogy because I had heard some pretty positive reviews for it. The story is about an autistic boy called Bixby Alexander Tam, nicknamed Bat. He has the nickname for a few reasons besides for the acronym — Bat feels it’s appropriate because he also: loves animals, has very sensitive hearing like a bat, and will flap his hands like wings when he’s excited. The story starts when his mom, a vet, brings home an orphaned skunk kit that needs caring for and Bat falls in love with it. The trilogy extends over the rest of Bat’s school year, a budding new friendship, and how he helps raise the kit and tries to convince his mom that he doesn’t need to be released into the wild but instead would make a perfect pet.
I felt… lukewarm to it, honestly. I think my problem is I went into it with the wrong expectations. The way it had been described to me, I thought it would be one of those more “artsy” ““highbrow”” children’s novels but it really reads more like a pretty standard fare Child Animal Story. Which is fine! A standard animal story is appealing to kids, and having some autistic rep in a basic book instead of exclusively in more artsy stuff is great. It was just a bit of a disappointment after I heard it so hyped.
It did have some interesting parallels/symbolism, but over all the plot was rather meandering without any real upticks, and the language was fairly plain and uninteresting. And the ending fell completely flat. It felt like the few themes the book was clinging were just completely dropped in the final yard. I would totally recommend them to an elementary kid that wants a cute animal/school story, but that’s about it.
Tumblr media
Ballet Shoes
This book I had a great time with. I’m reading a completely different novel that referenced back to this classic children’s novel and I ended up needing to detour to read this first so I could get the references. I’m glad I did! Normally I’d be put off by the title/aesthetic, because I’ve never been a kid into “ballerina stories” but I ended up really loving it. It made me think of similar books from the earlier 20th century, like A Little Princess or The Secret Garden or Anne of Green Gables, all of which I love.
Ballet Shoes is about a trio of adopted sister: Pauline, Petrova and Posy. Their guardian does their best to make ends meet and ensure the girls get an education, but the household funds are gradually dwindling and they’re soon struggling. Luck strikes though when they decided to let out rooms of their home for borders, and one ended up suggesting all three girls join a local ballet school — there they can train in dance, but can also start earning money at the age of twelve if they get cast in productions. The girls take to this training with varying degrees of enthusiasm, each one being a very unique, enjoyable character, and the book follows the different misadventures they have as they grow and enter the entertainment industry and continue to fight to make ends meet.
Despite how heavy that might sound, it was ultimately quite a charming, feel-good novel. It was perfect for a cosy blanket and a cup of tea.
Tumblr media
Bedknob and Broomstick
I had watched the movie a number of times growing up but never once read the novel, so I finally remedied that. Did you realize that what we know as Bed-Knob and Broomstick is actually a compilation of two separate books, The Magic Bed-Knob and Bonfires and Broomsticks? I hadn’t! And I have to say, I think I enjoyed the second story more than the first.
For those who haven’t heard of the story at all, it’s about three children who are sent to the country to stay with their aunt, and during their summer they end up meeting a neighbour called Miss Price. Miss Price is a rather regular, proper young woman, with the added detail that she’s learning to become a witch through correspondence classes. When the children promise not to reveal her secret, Miss Price gifts them an enchanted bed-knob, one that will take them anywhere in place or time they would like to travel. The first story is about the places they adventure too. The second is some time later, when they are able to visit Miss Price once again, and are horrified to discover that she has given up witchcraft for good. The kids however are determined to use the bed-knob once more, this time to venture back into the past.
In all honesty, I was rather neutral to the book, especially given how racist the first half is. I was happy to have read the classic but I wouldn’t go out of my way to read it again.
Tumblr media
The Boy in the Dress
Now, caveat right at the top: this book isn’t explicitly queer. At no point does anyone come out as gay or trans. But I do consider it queer in that the entire narrative is an ongoing conversation about what the gender binary means, and how one’s own identity, passions, and presentation can challenge that, and how people respond to those challenges.
The story follows 12 year old Dennis who lives in a very ordinary, plain household with his older brother and father, who attends a very ordinary, plain school, in a very ordinary, plain town. He loves playing football (soccer), hanging out with his friend, and he also loves dresses. He loves how bright and colourful and joyful they can be, when his life feels very bland. Dennis struggles with figuring out how to explore the interest while contending with the other people in his life who clearly disapprove.
It’s a really earnest, heartwarming story.
Tumblr media
Dogsbody
Ah, I love Diana Wynne Jones’ books, they’re always completely buckwild. This book was a ton of fun; as always with her books it really felt like I was reading something different and quirky and attention grabbing.
The main character of Dogsbody is Sirius — yes, the star. The story opens with him being put on trial, accused of killing another luminary and losing a powerful instrument called a Zoi. His sentence for this crime is to be stripped of his powers and cast down to earth, to spend one lifetime living in a humble, mortal form. If he can survive and find the Zoi within that lifetime, he will be welcomed back to the cosmos.
Sirius is reborn a regular puppy, one with no memories of his previous life or powers or mission. The novel follows him gradually growing up under the care of a young girl and her cruel family as he attempts to regain his memories and figure out how to find his lost Zoi.
Tumblr media
Dragon Rider
I haven’t read Dragon Rider since I was a kid, but I realized they had done a film of it… and man, that adaptation was not great. I remembered the book being better so I had to investigate. And I was right, the book is a really cute, enjoyable adventure with some charming characters.
The adventure starts when the hidden valley that Firedrake lives in is threatened by humans. The dragons have lived in small, hidden pockets for years, and now that it seems that the constant tide of humanity is pushing towards them they have no idea what to do. Only Firedrake takes up the challenge of venturing out of the valley in the search of a legendary place called the Rim of Heaven where dragons allegedly live in safety. Along with his dear friend the brownie Sorrel, and a young human they run into, they must plot of course that will take them across the globe, while avoiding an ancient, fearsome, dragon-hunting monster which has been without its preferred prey for centuries.

Grandpa’s Great Escape
I’ve been meaning to read David Walliams books for ages, ever since I saw them beginning to pop up in our local bookstore. I finally bought one on a whim, and wow, I was not disappointed. It reads exactly like a Roald Dahl novel, which is about the highest praise I can offer — I don’t think I’ve ever read anything that satisfies in the same way as Dahl before.
This novel follows Jack and his grandfather, a retired RAF pilot from WWII. His grandfather has become increasingly confused as the years progress, and often finds himself mixing up the present and his past glory days as a pilot; Jack is one of the few people who still finds it easy to talk to his grandfather because he is completely willing to meet him at his level, talk to him as if he really is still the Wing Commander. When his parents can no longer handle it though, they’re duped into send Jack’s grandpa to the wicked Twilight Towers. As the only one who can see how sinister the place really is, Jack is determined to save his grandfather.
It’s a truly hilarious story, since it’s written very much to read like a RAF pilot trying to escape from a Nazi concentration camp… except set in a nursing home! I can’t recommend this book enough, between the silly, heartfelt story, the occasional tragedy, and the fun illustrations, it’s such an addictive read.

I Think Our Son Is Gay v3
I read the first book of this series last month (whoops, I skipped 2… my library just happened to have the third in) and decided to try another. It’s a cute little series about a teenage boy experiencing his first crush. Though he hasn’t come out to his family yet, he’s a boy who seems incapable of lying, who has a face that gives him away easily, so his mother (the main POV character) is quite certain he’s gay and that he has a crush on his best friend. She is determined to be quietly supportive of her son until he’s ready to come out. The series is predominantly sweet and supportive little episodic stories, but it also layers in some of the everyday homophobia and microaggressions a gay teenager might experience in a homophobic society, even when people around him don’t know he’s gay. It’s a very worthwhile read.
Tumblr media
Socks
This was a book that I read over and over in grade 2 and I had forgotten its name until just recently. I never read many Beverly Clearly books as a kid, since I preferred genre fiction over stories based around the real world / school, but I loved the silly story told from the pet cat's point of view.
The story is about Socks and the perfect family he’s adopted into… perfect until a new baby comes around and suddenly Socks is competing for attention.

The Squirrel, the Hare and the Little Grey Rabbit/ Hare Joins the Home Guard
I mentioned in my review about Ballet Shoes that I read it because another novel I’m reading referenced it: same for this book! The Squirrel, the Hare, and the Little Grey Rabbit is one of the picture books the main character of the other book often alludes to so I decided I needed to read it as well. This book was a cute, standard fare little picture book from that era. It’s about the very gentle, virtuous Grey Rabbit, and her rather bossier, lazier housemates, the Hare and the Squirrel. It was cute and the art was lovely, though I can’t say much beyond that.
I also read Hare Joins the Home Guard mostly because I was stunned and baffled by a Cute Animal Story explicitly jumping into WWII… though I suppose it makes sense! It came out in 1942 and it’s a pretty gentle way of holding a mirror up to some of the things children were certainly hearing about and experiencing in their real lives. In this, the various animals join the “home guard” in different roles (such as taking up arms, becoming a Red Cross nurse, digging shelters to protect children, or knitting for the “troops”) in order to fight off invading weasels. I would say it was also fairly “basic” were it not for the fact that it was hilarious to see this next to titles like Little Grey Rabbit Makes Lace. How often do you see Cute Lil Animals preparing gas masks for their chemical warfare plans?

not quite an ask, but - rec me some poetry!! ❤️
omg you !!!! you asked the ultimate keep-me-up-all-night-thinking question why would you do this. why. i love you so much.
so i guess i should skip (?) probably (?) the ppl that tumblr already seems to be deeply familiar with e.g. richard siken, ocean vuong, franny choi, hanif abdurraqib, ada limon all coming to mind here, though i def love sooo much of what i've read by them & they deserve their dues!
and then idk if i should also skip (?) maybe (?) some of the really obvious super-famous suspects like sylvia plath, anne sexton, t.s. eliot, e.e. cummings, w.b. yeats, frank o'hara, uh. whose poetry i also love. but like? idk probably these are not deep cuts either but i am extremely fond of them so?
mmm okay so that leaves the small intersection of like .... poetry i've actually read (x) poets i don't see floating around tumblr all the time anyway (x) poets still alive or only fairly recently dead and thus not as stupidly famous as shakespeare or neruda?? (spoiler they're still very famous as far as poets are concerned i'm not like. that deep.)
so anyway i think that little list of poets might include: jericho brown (just finally read the tradition, absolutely gorgeous), natasha trethewey, edward hirsch, louise gluck, dianne seuss (recently read frank: sonnets - lovely!), tracy k smith, marie howe, sharon olds, eavan boland, seamus heaney. oh deep cut, i just discovered a young poet named marcus scott williams with some cool stuff! emily skaja and kathryn merwin might be younger/lesser known/deeper cuts too? gosh i know there are so many deserving others and also cool lesser known poets i'm not listing but my mind is like. yknow. whoooooosh.
oh also for easier reading etc here are some links to a few beloved poems by ppl from all these various lists in no logical order whatsoever:
"dear dr. frankenstein" by jericho brown
"ave maria" by frank o'hara (does not get enough love here on tumblr?? all i ever see is "having a coke with you" which don't get me wrong is so so lovely but why do i never see this one on the dash?? my absolute o'hara fave)
"[intimacy unhinged, unpaddocked me]" by diane seuss
"white lies" by natasha trethewey
"for the sleepwalkers" by edward hirsch
"death, the last visit" by marie howe
"that the science of cartography is limited" by eavan boland (some of y'all will def recognize this uh !! i know !! for reasons!)
"since feeling is first" by e.e. cummings
"perihelion: a history of touch" by franny choi
"digging" by seamus heaney
"young" by anne sexton

Throwback to Halloween 2022 with a redesign of Dollindella Geistfall, one of my oldest original character.
She is the youngest daughter of a monster clan, the Falls, a fusion between the Addams and the Volturis (can you imagine such chaotic energy ! O.O’)
Dolli’ lost her hands after a failed experiment, all thanks to her not-so-crazy uncle. Since then, she wears mechanical hands she loves to change and collect. Finally, Dollindella masters possession and animation magic with her wand a.k.a her “broomstick-umbrella”.

Floating books in the "forbidden archives" in the episode, "Agony of Grea"
Hello everyone! I'd like to talk about two of my favorite anime series: Manaria Friends and Little Witch Academia. I wrote about Little Witch Academia before, but I haven't mentioned Manaria Friends, so I saw this as an opportunity to do so!
Reprinted from my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog. Originally published on Jan. 30, 2021.
In the Manaria Friends episode "Agony of Grea," Anne travels to the "forbidden archives" of the library to get a book to help Grea. Again, this is a confusion of archives and libraries, just like in Lore Olympus, the Star Wars franchise, and Amphibia. The Wikipedia episode description doesn't help in this regard, declaring: "Grea is suddenly struck with a high fever and Anne goes through the "forbidden" archives of the library trying to find a way to cure her." Some said that this reminded them of their dreams.
The episode begins with a character coming in with "forbidden" books given to her by a librarian at the desk after she told the librarian it was an emergency. Then, Anne, a Princess, runs to the library to find an answer. She travels through the deep bowels of the archives with her servant, what one character calls "the forbidden archives of the library," traveling down hallways, through floating books, magical forests, and stepping through the air with her magic, to continue and find answers, even jumping into the water.
She tries to gather more and more information as she goes forward, as it flows through her hand. They get a shortcut to the library, blasting inside, and scramble to find the medicines to help Grea in whatever way possible.
Anne returns in time and looks at Grea with shock. She learns that Grea was just molting a new tail. While she says that she was unable to do anything to help Grea, and holds the skin of her tail, showing that she still loves her a lot. The final parts of the episode show people at the magic academy trying to fix the damage to the library caused by Anne's entry and Anne tells that Grea's tail looks great, which embarrasses her even more, causing her to leave.

Reference archives in "Blue Moon"
In another of my favorite series, Little Witch Academia, there are two episodes that focus on archives. In the first of these "Blue Moon," Diana travels to the reference archives of the magic academy she attends to learn more about an important legend. The archives are in a hidden crypt and the book she looks at is dusty. The archives is deserted and she is the only one who is there, getting to the book by using her broom with a lantern at the end, as the room is dark. More awful stereotypes. I hate to see them. It makes me sad to see them in an animated series. Don't those producing these series know better?
Tumblr media
Reference archives in "Samhain Magic Festival," with Ursula on a broom looking for the right item
Then, there's the episode "Samhain Magic Festival." In this episode, Prof. Ursula travels to the same reference archives, looking for a specific object in order to help Akko but has a hard time finding it. She goes back and finds out from a spirit that the monster is sad because of the Seed of Sadness. Go archives! So, that's a positive!

WAIT I had another thought about the "show me the thing you're not supposed to have" post you reblogged: godfather Sirius is great, but consider GRANDFATHER Sirius. Harry and Ginny have said no to some toy that James Sirius wants, but that's okay, Grandad Sirius will buy it for him anyway :)
no but miss imp i had the exact same thought literally ten minutes after the rb!!! we absolutely cannot forget papa sirius.
i’m thinking partners in crime jem and sirius; james sirius growing up knowing that sirius is almost always putty in his hands when it comes to things like gifts and cuddles and animals just as his parents have a chronic inability to get mad at sirius which makes for a very favourable situation for little jemmy. so he gets pretty good at playing them against each other (and lbr, even after sirius finds out about his extortionist antics, he’s too impressed/amused to do anything but keep indulging him)
x
“No, James, you just got a Quidditch simulator for your birthday, which was three weeks ago, might I add, and we’d like for you to wait before you get anything else,” Mummy said. One of her eyebrows was higher than the other and her mouth looked like it was in a straight line and James knew that she wouldn’t change her mind anytime soon. He turned to Daddy but quickly discarded that idea when he looked at his face. Clearly, they were in a tag-team mood.
That’s okay, because James had something in mind. So he smiled and ran forward to hug Mummy around the waist. “Okay!” She ruffled his hair quickly and with one quick hug from his Daddy, James walked out of the room with a plan quickly forming in his head.
x
“—and and and it’s twenty seven players and thirty broomsticks and—“
“Why do you needs three extra brooms, kiddo?” Papa asked with a glint in his eye.
“So you can repace one if it gets hurt, Papa!” James answered with a giggle before continuing his well rehearsed sales pitch. “And it has the best costume and they can fly four feet high, which is like, one whole feet more than the sima- the simu- sim-lator and it’s so cool and—“
“Slow down, babe, you don’t need to make yourself faint,” Papa cut in. “Take a breath, enjoy that sweet, sweet oxygen, and let me take care of this. You’re too young to have any problems or those wrinkles on your face.” He smoothed a playful hand over James’ brow and he smiled toothily at the man, knowing his plan had worked out perfectly, just as intended.
x
“Sirius!” Harry had his hands on his hips, an exasperated moue to his lips, and a resigned look on his green eyes. Sirius was thoroughly enjoying this. “There was a reason we didn’t want James to have the damn thing.”
“I know.”
“He literally just got the biggest, most expensive, toy in the whole store not a month ago. The thing’s barely even out of its packaging and the way you keep going on, I fear it’ll never be.”
“Harry, you know it’s my solemn duty to get jemmy whatever his little sneak heart desires,” Sirius said, grinning. Jem had been ecstatic to receive the fruits of his hard earned labor and the tight hug he’d got in return had been more than enough compensation for Sirius to deal with the inevitable tongue lashing (or, well, attempted tongue lashing) he’d receive later when his actions were discovered.
His godson’s brows furrowed in confusion. “…sneak heart?” He had a ‘do i even wanna know’ expression on his face, one Sirius was very familiar with considering all the antics he!d gotten up to with his grandbabies in the past few years, and it never became any less amusing.
“God, Harry, I don’t know how you created such an adorable child—must be the James in you—but he really thought he could trick me into thinking he wanted me to buy it because I’m his favorite and not because you two had said no already.” The sight of his little grandkid, coming through his door with a serious, determined frown and a barely-concealed pout on his face was still clear in his mind. Sirius knew he should at least make an attempt to reign in this behaviour, but could he really be blamed when he had to go up against such a formidably adorable opponent?
“You are his favorite,” Harry countered, a little petulantly, and Sirius finally let himself smile indulgently. Damn right he was.

“To all of my children…”
“Children of the land…”
“Well come and well met, my brave little spark…”
Like for the first 2 I was like “well yeah she’s the goddess of the world it makes sense for her to refer to mankind as her children” but with Endwalker it’s like ow. Owie. I know what you meant now crystal mom.
