Something that is in fact SO important to Wei Wuxian is that, fundamentally, he is hot. He is Thee Hot Girl. He’s shooting five arrows blindfolded as a charged political statement and he’s doing it with zero magic powers AND he was sexy when he did it. He beats out his own brother (sorry, Jiang Cheng) for Most Eligible Bachelor despite being literally dirt poor and not a sect heir. He lives rent free in the minds of everybody twenty years later, to the point that JC and LWJ are literally Like That and NHS literally constructed his revenge plot around him and— look, just watch the scenes at the Second Burial Mounds Siege. Oh, and they use all his inventions, even though he’s an evil heretic, because uhhh they were really good inventions. Actually. Like he was in fact at the top of the field as an inventor and innovator. And he was hot. AND he had no powers. Whoops.

Summary: The Yiling Patriarch's demonic cultivation sect is invited to help fight a massive waterborne abyss. Exhausted and half-drowned from battling ghouls, Wei Wuxian meets Hanguang-jun. Kay's comments: This is an AU of an AU, basically, it was inspired by LtLJ's series "Fated", which I [and Mojo] also absolutely adore [Mojo's Rec]. Wei Wuxian grew up around the Burial Mounds and started his own sect with the Dafan Wens and here they have their first outing assiting the Lan Sect with dealing with the Waterborne Abyss. Lan Wangji meets him after the fight and takes care of him and ah, they are just so cute and I love how they immediately click, like two puzzle pieces fitting into place. Excerpt: "There is no need for thanks." Lan Wangji started to make tea, his movements precise and elegant. "You are one of the demonic cultivators." "Yes. You -- your sect -- invited us here." The feeling was returning to Wei Wuxian's hands and feet in pinpricks of sensation, the warmth of the tent sinking in, and what he actually wanted to do was curl up next to the braiser and sleep. "We had word of your efforts in Yiling, on the river that was affected by the Burial Mounds runoff." Lan Wangji placed a cup of tea in front of Wei Wuxian. "And it seemed obvious that you would be expert with ghouls." Wei Wuxian couldn't fault that logic. And until this moment he had wondered if maybe the Lan sect had invited them accidentally somehow, and not as a deliberate, sensible quest for helpful knowledge. "Sorry we haven't been more, um, friendly. I bet everyone thinks we won't invite people to our tent because it's full of demonic evil, but really we're worried that if the sects see our dirty laundry it'll ruin the whole Burial Mounds mystique." He still sounded like a raspy crow, rambling. He sipped the tea, the warmth clearing his thoughts, and pulled himself back to the point. "We've had some issues with the other sects, at times. The Jin, the Su."

Canon Jiang Cheng in his brief appearances: is always following WWX around and cleaning up after his mess (like carrying him on his back after he's beaten by the Lan Sect, sitting in the front of the classroom to appear attentive to LQR after WWX's shenanigans to save face for their sect, to quote WWX himself "you've already saved me so many times. So what's one more?"), warns WWX not to anger WZL since he's known as the core melting hand, then goes to attack WZL with his bare hands when he stands between him & WLJ after WLJ has burned WWX, runs for seven days straight to get help for WWX, begs his mother on his knees to stop hitting WWX in front of the Wens even though he knows if WLJ is not satisfied the Wens would lay waste to their sect and it's either WWX or their sect, uses himself as a bait to draw the Wen soldier away from WWX even though he knows his sect will end with him, his only thought after losing his golden core is that now he can't take revenge for his family and can't rebuild his sect, doesn't stick with his brother even though that's what he's always been doing because he can't risk his newly-built sect's safety, only truly gets mad at WWX when he kills their BIL & indirectly causes their sister's deaths, after 13 years still doesn't have a dog, offers Zidian to JL when he can't protect JL himself, even though he can barely stand and lift his sword still goes back for WWX in the burial mounds, takes a stab to the chest trying to protect WWX, offers to take JL's place as hostage for JGY, stands between JL and an unstoppable fierce corpse, doesn't say anything to WWX about his sacrifice.

Most annoying NMJ or JC take is when someone that dislikes them is like "oh you're a fan of him? *scoff* Well obviously you've only seen cql, where he was super watered down. In the novel he's a dislikable asshole and that's the objectively superior canon I'm working from instead of your woobified fanfic." Meanwhile your main canon is novel canon and you genuinely find novel Jiang Cheng and Nie Mingjue complex sympathetic characters.

That's also why none of them had seen meng yao before.) #you can absolutely choose to interpret that worse things were happening to him at the hands of the nie off-page #it's definitely possible! but cql has people acting like it's objective canon #also the thing about empathy being inaccurate and biased in nmj's favor #that's another cql thing. in novel canon wwx can and does see things nmj does not notice (like the teacups!) #so even if he has some insight into nmj's thoughts and feelings it quite literally can't be showing things exclusively from his perspective #it was a pretty cool ceative decision from cql! gave us some very interesting character moments! #but sometimes i see people discuss the novel going 'and this was warped by nmj's bias i bet he was even worse in reality' girl wrong medium #in jiang cheng's case a lot of hate seems to be coming from the corner of cql!mains too #so clearly it can't be *that* big a difference in likability
