19-year-old southpaw Jackie Mitchell, of the House of David baseball team, speaks to her teammates while in New York, July 14, 1933. Mitchell was the first and only woman to have a contract in Major League baseball, with the Chattanooga Lookouts. Two years earlier, in an exhibition game during spring training, she had struck out both Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth―in six pitches.
There is some controversy about that―not that it didn’t happen, because there is a film of it―but as to whether the Yankee aces were doing it just for show. Mitchell always maintained that it was genuine. “Why, hell, they were trying, damn right,” she said. “Hell, better hitters than them couldn’t hit me. Why should they’ve been any different?”
Timothy Wiles, who served as the Baseball Hall of Fame Research Director for about 20 years, said, “If she did this today, it would become a permanent part of the consciousness because of the media we have. If ESPN was around, it certainly would be their lead story.”
Mitchell was quoted at the time saying she learned to throw from her neighbor, MLB's Charles Arthur “Dazzy” Vance, who was later inducted into the Hall of Fame. Her contract was cancelled by baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis after he heard about her spring training feat in 1931.

The way 'Father's Day' is such a good episode that you don't even question that Jackie is supposed to be 20 years old in it
But scratch that - Jackie Tyler's birthday is the 1st of February 1967, at least according to Rise of the Cybermen which makes her 20 by the time of Pete's death. Rose is several months old at this point so she was married and pregnant by 19 at best, the same age that Rose allegedly starts the story. (I say allegedly because there is a discrepancy with her age which for some reason hasn't been fixed yet.)
But Pete's birthday is dated as the 15th of September, 1954 as per the episode, making him 33 when he died.
What was a 30-something doing with a teenager? That's quite the age gap, no wonder Jackie was concerned with Rose and the Doctor! Talk about repeating history!

Egotober 2023 Day 22: Trouble in the Night
Summary: Marvin just wants to be down with paperwork and red tape when he just wants to keep people safe. So he goes out and finds trouble himself.
A/N: I know about the Iron Lung trailer and I know about the Altrverse comics. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with them in the story.

Marvin hated dealing with immigration, normally he was able to come and go between the UK, Ireland, the EU, and the States. People barely gave that more than a batted eye other than glancing at his passport.
But fuck him if he wanted to stay for a couple months and teach Drowned how to read auras, because he was the one with the most potential to do that. And fuck him for thinking Dark would be okay with that when he had visited before.
Everyone was losing their minds and it was a real pain in Marvin’s neck. He knew at the end they’d let him go, they always did. It was the issue with Dark that was keeping him here so long.
And Marvin didn’t want to go down to Florida. It was supposed to be hot and humid down there and Marvin didn’t deal with humidity too well. It would also mean that Drowned, that Wade, would have to come to him. That he’d have less time to work with him and might have to be in that soup longer.
It got him so frustrated that he went through the neighborhood in full costume, looking for a fight. He wanted something to come up to him so he could work out some of that anger in him.
Some people said hi, but it took under he was close to Stacy’s house, Chase’s recent ex who Marvin was still on relatively civil terms with. He was walking around and seeing Chase’s eldest kid, Paddy outside. The sixteen-year-old looked surprised to see him.
“Hey, how’s it going?” Marvin called out.
Paddy hid something behind his back and Marvin could still smell the smoke. “Uh, what are you doing here?”
“Just going for a watch, boy-oh, don’t worry, just worry about getting the smoke back off you,” Marvin said.
Then he saw movement in the darkness and Marvin moved, magic spinning off his fingers as his magical tattoos along his arms began to glow a brilliant gold and deep teal green.
Marvin got in-between Paddy and the thing coming for him and as it got closer he saw the aura of a young, desperate demon. Murder in their eyes and anger in their aura.
It was easy for Marvin to push it back but it got up unharmed.
Refusing to take his eyes off them, Marvin said, “Get inside kid.”
Paddy bolted and Marvin kept the demon from chasing after the moving target.
“I don’t think so,” Marvin said.
The demon actually hissed at him and Marvin saw the pale skin and the sharp teeth and blood red eyes. Crawling around on the ground.
And Marvin couldn’t believe it. “You think you’re real clever, huh? A demon vampire?”
They didn’t respond, only crawling on the ground, sizing him up for an attack. Whether or not they could respond to him, Marvin wasn’t sure.
Green magic came from Marvin’s hands as he threw spells at the demon.
The creature was absolutely relentless, trying to get their claws into Marvin every chance the demon got. Jackie sped over to help and between the two of them the demon was discorporated.
Marvin’s mood had improved considerably aftwards. Jackie ran in to check on Stacy and the kids.
The magician took the time to set up more wards, figuring that his old ones had just started to fade and that was the problem.
He didn’t see that any of his wards had decayed but he refreshed them all the same. His magic wasn’t perfect but with time it would be. Then Marvin walked in to give a report and a warning about the wards. Paddy would get chewed out for smoking because his mother had a working nose.
Not the best night, Marvin wouldn’t get news about his paperwork for another day and have to get a rush flight. But tonight, for what it was, it was a nice end to an otherwise stressful day.

Spa-Francorchamps Corner Names

So like most classic tracks, most of the corners at Spa are known by names as well as numbers, however there are some corners that have been given multiple different names over the years and as such this can get confusing.

La Source (Turn 1): The first corner on the circuit is also the slowest. It draws its name from the various water sources in the region and particularly in the Spa area.
Le Raidillon de l'Eau Rouge (Turns 3 - 5): Usually these two names are referred to separately but the corner complex is officially called ‘Le Raidillon de l'Eau Rouge’. Raidillon which translates to small steep road, and Eau Rouge meaning red water in reference to the nearby stream.
Kemmel (Turn 6): Sometimes referred to as the Kemmel Straight, but it is in fact a corner, well a slight uphill kink. The name comes from the village of Kemmel, in Belgium.
Les Combes (Turns 7 - 9): Combes translates to small incised valley or gorge and once again it’s a reference to the geography of the local area, as the track was designed around these natural characteristics.
Bruxelles/Rivage (Turn 10): Bruxelles is the proper name for Brussels and the name Rivage comes from a nearby Hamlet.
Speakers Corner/Jacky Ickx Corner (Turn 11): This corner was called Speakers Corner as on the original circuit this was the point that the commentator would first see the cars after they had disappeared into the forest at the start. In 2018 the corner was renamed after the Belgian racing driver Jacky Ickx as a tribute to his career (6 24 hour of Le Mans wins, 8 wins and 25 podiums in F1). However if you listen to the Sky commentary you may hear them refer to this corner as ‘no name’.
Pouhon (Turn 12): The word Pouhon means the place where the water springs from. This corner is a major challenge as it’s a downhill double left, that’s taken at very high speeds. In fact Fernando Alonso confused the McLaren Honda system so much in 2017 by taking Pouhon flat out that the car stopped working in qualifying.
Fagnes (Turn 13): The name used refers to the Fagnes (fens) region as the village of Francorchamps is located there.
Campus (Turn 14): The Campus corner is a fast curve bending to the right and its name comes from Campus Automobile adjacent to the track. This is a training centre training centre for engineers and technicians in subjects such as automobile industry occupations, motorsports and in technological research.
Stavelot (Turns 15 - 16): Quite simply these corners are named after the area in which the Spa Francorchamps Circuit is located
Paul Frère: A sort of unofficial corner as it doesn’t have a corner number as it’s just a kink that the drivers aren’t even really aware of but this corner was named after Paul Frère who was a racing driver and journalist from Belgium. He participated in eleven World Championship Formula One Grands Prix and achieved a podium finish in his last race - the 1956 Belgian Grand Prix.
Blanchimont (Turns 17 - 18): A double bend that is particularly difficult to negotiate given the speeds attained. Like most of the corners here, it too was named after a nearby village
Chicane/Nouvelle Chicane/Bus Stop Chicane (Turns 19 - 20): The last challenge to approach is a slow corner in an S which bears the (un)original name of: Chicane in the old days, it was alluded to as the "Bus Stop Chicane" as at that time when the track was open to traffic at certain times, there used to be a bus stop there. Novelle Chicane is also used sometimes, and that literally means ‘New Chicane’ - it’s not very creative

I don’t think your complaint about the ages of the companions is super valid because the actresses for rose and Martha were the same age, like I think the 11 companions were (blanking on their names sorry) also about the same age (all early 20s). donna was just about 10 years older. River songs actress is older than Donna’s and was mostly important later on so she was even that much older. I’m pretty sure river song is the oldest new who companion (who is also a woman) since she’s older than Jackie (actress just barely old enough to be rose’s mom). Not that there isn’t an issue with representing women of a certain age but it’s present in both generations, probably all of them but I haven’t watched everything
i don't know, i read rose as a young 19 year old with no direction in life, martha as a mid 20s young professional with a clear set of goals and direction in life in med school, and donna as a middle aged woman beat down by life. all coming from very different places, with incredibly specific family histories and dynamics that informed their flaws and goals. whereas amy is 'hot ageless young woman whose life revolves around the doctor', clara is 'hot ageless young woman whose life revolves around the doctor', and river song is also well. 'hot ageless young woman whose life revolves around the doctor'.
we barely learn anything about them and their goals and lives and flaws and families and worlds outside of the doctor and there is very little to differentiate their personalities, the circumstances and perspectives they are bringing to the table, and where they are coming from both in terms of like again rose being someone who never went to college versus martha being someone who was in med school both choices that HUGELY impacted their character arcs choices motivations life experiences etc. donna has graduated and has been working in the career field, for example.
so i actually do think im being fair on the age thing -- though i guess it's more about where they are in life than their literal age that im referring to. also it’s not about the actresses ages -- that doesn’t matter at all to me haha. it’s about the ages and places in life the characters are coming from -- ie, drop out, med student, long term temp worker. whereas again. river clara and amy are honestly more or less just plot devices for the doctor and coming from relatively the same place in life (yearning to meet the doctor again / desperately trying to meet the doctor)

Hey, you seem to be one of the few sane vm fans left, so i wanted to talk to you about something. I also believe the two of them aren't romantically involved and quite possibly never even were. I have a feeling that the reason why they don't do public collaborations and in general distanced themselves is bc the fans were so crazy. The only way they could have a normal life was to separate themselves so people would leave them alone. So people who so desperately wanted them together actually contributed to them distancing themselves from each other (at least publicly). I don't know why people think they hate each other now or don't talk at all. I think it would be smart of them to keep their interactions private since people can't behave themselves. I 100% believe they are still friends but prefer to keep it quiet so they can lead their lives without constant whispers and everyone analyzing them for the slightest clue they are together. I look at old blogs from 2018 and i cringe so badly, i cannot image how awful it was for them to see all that crazy. To have a wonderful relationship questioned at every turn and to feel like they can't be themselves because someone will interpret it a different way. It makes me sad, we kinda brought this upon ourselves. They felt the need to distance themselves because there was no other way for them to have a normal life. If they toured today people would still talk about their relationship and trash morgan and jackie. It is maddening. Sorry, this was kinda a rant, but i had to get it off my chest.
OMGGG Anon you have no idea how much I agree with this!!!!! This is so ridiculously on point and tbh I was actually thinking similar things the other day. Also… I LOVE RANTS so you’re rants are welcome here. Now settle in for one of mine ✌️
So firstly- while I wasn’t on blogs/Twitter any of that before like November last year- and in 2018/19 my extent of following VM was just following them on Insta. Basically everyday I’m so glad I have a blog about them NOW rather than 4 years ago coz I would not be able to handle it. I’m so sensitive and feel a lot about the people I admire (not just VM, others too: dancers, mentors, etc) and I would not be able to handle the hate- much like you even now with the small samplings it makes me sad. I have an VM Insta page as well and the other day someone just decided to drop into my DM’s and say ‘how could they have broken each other’s hearts’ and it made me so angry. I just deleted the msg coz I wasn’t gonna waste my time. 🙄
I 100% believe they were never romantically involved. I’ll do my best not to lay out all my points in another 5000 word essay but essentially what I see that others may constitute as ‘too lovey, familiar, comfortable with each other, etc..’ I put down to two things.
1. They are dancers. I’m a dancer and I’ve had to do similar stuff to what they do some programs (carmen, MR) with people I’ve just met, let alone known for 20years or was romantically involved with.
2. They are very very close friends who were by each other’s side for 22 years. They’ve been through everything together. They are so comfortable with each other. They love each other, they care about each other, but they can also be silly together and tease each other like best friends do. They themselves say they are each other’s family. Each other’s parents, siblings are as much their’s as their own.
But especially what people would freak out about during and post-PYC, the TTYCT and RTR, (according to some of the more toxic blogs) is they are mature adults who are obviously very secure in their sexuality. They know how to control themselves but are also very aware of their physicality and interactions together. And honestly, I think they are attracted to each other- they just don’t want to fuck each other. This along with the fact they had been partners for over 20 years. I think that’s the main thing people would forget when they blatantly objectified them: that VM don’t know any different. Being so close is all they know and if they were to have that taken away from them- not by their own choosing I think would utterly crush them. [The way they have managed it so well and are so at peace with it is because retiring was their decision and they did it exactly how they wanted] That’s how they show and express their love and after 20 + years of being under the microscope and so heavily scrutinised by judges, coaches, audiences and internet trolls, they become each other’s safe place. For ex: all the hugs/cuddles at the end of MR:

That’s not them being romantic. That’s literally them being in their safe space. The figure skating world is harsh enough, let alone add on all the internet a**holes trolling coz they have nothing better to do with their lives. Those cuddles and caresses and looking into each other’s eyes is like home for them. I was thinking earlier how when they take their bows + leave the ice (more during shows but I guess also competitively) they almost always very quickly retreat back into each other. I don’t get the vibe they are overly comfortable under the spotlight (literally the rink lights but I guess also just in the public eye). They love performing, acting, dancing, skating and telling a story together, but I don’t think they crave that audience appreciation. Some performers do, which is fine. But they don’t. They do it for each other. So when a program ends and they cuddle/kiss/hold each other close, squeeze hands and tap tushies, etc, they are just being grateful for each other and probably do it as a comping mechanism for the screams and cheers and the odd feelings that causes. It’s like they say- they could not cope with being singles skaters. The only reason the do what they do is each other, and because they only feel safe in those uncomfortable environments because they have each other.
Now I’m not a therapist/psychologist, whatever, and I’m not trying to implying that people are dumb, but why is it so hard to accept that that closeness and affection is something more special and even more intimate than being romantically involved?? Maybe, as rare as it is, it’s something even more special that should be admired instead of criticised and probed at endlessly.
I truly don’t get the obsession with making up fake relationships between real people on the internet, I don’t get the point of it, especially when I’m the case of VM in ended in “heartbreak” and anger for the people “shipping them”. What is the benefit of making up and spreading shit about people you don’t even know? How low is that. Why are people so obsessed with people they don’t even know having sex they feel the need to bully people about it? That’s so fucked up to me.
I think it definitely contributed to them becoming more private. I also I think as they prepared for retirement it was a natural evolution. I pray they don’t know the extent of some of the trash online about them- I don’t even know the worst of it and I never want to coz like I said- it really upsets me. I think about that short video of them answering Twitter questions and one of them was ‘what’s the craziest rumour about you’ and the way which Scott says ‘there’s some nasty stuff out there’ in retrospect, breaks my heart, coz there’s stuff that he knows that he considers nasty. And that’s probably not even the worst if it.
They did not/do not deserve any of that. What did they do to deserve this? I hate when people say “it’s their fault, they bring it on themselves”. And while I don’t think everyone commenting that meant it literally- it’s was just more hyperbole, my limited knowledge of the extent of the toxic nature this place used to be says there were people who meant it- and used it as permission to objectify them.
As much as I often comment things like ‘omg just let me live’, I’m not thinking of it in terms of their ‘romantic relationship’ I just mean they are incredible performers, artists, and their partnership/existence together is so beautiful it makes my heart beat faster. And they are so brave for being who they are, with each other despite all the trash talkers.
So yes anon. I think you are very on point in that it contributed to them distancing themselves publicly. And I fucking hate that that’s a possibility. I don’t think it would ever, ever affect their feelings for each other tho. If anything, I think they would mutually feel that it was for each other’s wellbeing and safety, that they didn’t want each other to be affected by any trash.
And after everything they’ve been through, I think they are truly relishing in figuring out their friendship not only removed from skating, but from the public eye. I think that’s something they always looked forward to figuring out and exploring together. They are courageous, brave and creative people who aren’t afraid of new challenges, and while in the physical respect they aren’t as close as they use to be, I think in other ways they are learning to be even closer, and/or understand each other better. And that’s amazing after 22+ years of skating together, 25 + years knowing each other, that there is still more they get to learn about each other, and they aren’t sick of knowing each other. That’s amazing. I could not have more respect for them if I tried.
Something I had talked about recently/while ago, wtevr, was can people not comprehend that T&S know better than anyone in the world where they stand in terms of their feelings for each other. After that long together do people really have the audacity to think they can tell T&S how they actually feel about each other, that they know more, understand more about what T&S have been through. And that T&S deciding to be with other people romantically spits in the face of what everyone thinks is true love.. and them deciding to be with other people means point blank that they hate each other??? WTAF???
Scott committed to Tessa the day of their first competition when he fucked up the steps and she stayed with him. As long as Tessa wanted to do this with him, he would be by her side. He would not be the one to let this incredibly special girl down. Tessa gave up the national ballet school for Scott at just 9 years old because she had committed to him, and she would not break that commitment and because she was already starting to feel a special connection with him that the idea of dancing with one partner and creating these stories together appealed to her more than a ballet career. He stayed with her through her injuries, she helped him through the hard times leading up to Sochi, and they returned to competition TO BE WITH EACH OTHER. How do you just reject and forget all of that as soon as you stop spending every day together. So I don’t know if these online trolls are really that dumb, or just enjoy contributing to the destruction of perfectly stable relationships coz it’s fun.
They may not be able to find the words to define their relationship, but they know what it means to them, and they know it’s one of the most important things in their lives and they will always have each other. There’s no way in the world everything they have experienced together can be undone. And I hate that people can’t just accept that the famous people they wish had some perfect, typical love story don’t, and what T&S have, as unusual as it is, is not only better, but it’s what Tessa and Scott want. And if you claim to ‘love’ them, to be a ‘fan’ of them, you should genuinely care about them and want them to be happy, even if it’s not want you think is perfect for them- how would you know.

I’m rewatching Doctor Who again and in Aliens of London (s1e4) there’s the whole “we were gone 12 months not 12 hours” thing right? Rose’s missing posters are where we see she’s 19 years old. Except she’s not is she, for her she lived mere days for what on earth was a year. Rose is actually 18, she’s a kid, mature and responsible for an 18yo, but she’s a teenager, barely old enough to not need her mom to sign paperwork for her.
Jackie’s terror and protectiveness makes so much more sense, it’s not just that her daughter is off gallivanting through time and space with the doctor; her barely an adult daughter who dropped out of school before a-levels to be with a boy is now endangering her life with a man who has admitted to not being able to protect her. Jackie has to fight for Rose’s safety even if/when it means fighting Rose, reminding the doctor of how young and precious she is. (s1e5) J: “please Doctor, please, she’s my daughter, she’s just a kid” D: “do you think I don’t know that?”
The Doctor knows, he knows and appreciates how young she is, he needs her humanity, hope, excitement, her lack of desensitization. As much as he tries to be good and righteous, he knows he isn’t able to do it on his own. He desperately tries to do right by her, he doesn’t want to realize Jackie’s worst fear, he was a father, but also he’s Rose’s friend, just as much her companion as she is his.
The years Rose spent with the Doctor were her transitioning from adolescence to adulthood, late teens through early 20s. Through those years we also saw Jackie’s change towards her, because her daughter growing up means she can trust Rose more with her independence and autonomy.

Prologue
The moon hung low in the night sky, casting eerie shadows across the desolate landscape. The rain pelting the muddy ground. Reese's heart pounded in his chest as he watched helplessly, his hands handcuffed to a pole behind his back. Jackie, a fierce determination etched on her face, stood her ground against the looming figures before her.
"Get away from her, I'll fucking kill you!" Reese's voice rang out, filled with desperation and rage, as he witnessed Jackie being forcefully thrown to the ground by a hulking man. "Fucking bitch," the man snarled, his eyes ablaze with malice.
Struggling to push herself up from the mud, Jackie's arms trembled with exertion. The air crackled with tension as the big man loomed over her, his voice grated with malice. "What do you think is an appropriate punishment, Jack?" he sneered, turning to his companion, a tall and sinister figure. "Hmm, good question... she's a pretty little thing, wouldn't you say?" Jack replied, his voice laced with sinister amusement. "I bet she's tight." The big man responded with a laugh.
Jackie's eyes widened in terror as she looked up at them, her breath coming in shallow gasps. Before she could utter a plea, Jack's harsh bark echoed through the air, "the fuck are you lookin' at?!" followed by a vicious kick to her face, sending her sprawling back into the muck.
Unable to bear the sight any longer, Reese's fury boiled over. He grit his teeth as he slammed his hand against the metal pole, feeling his wrist twist and dislocate with each blow. Boiling with adrenaline and Ignoring the searing pain. His left hand was just limp enough that he slipped out of his cuffs, freeing himself. Without hesitation he launched his body using all his might at the woman guarding him with.
His weight threw her face first onto the ground. Dropping her M4 rifle. Reese grappled with the guard, his injured hand rendered useless. With a desperate motion he wrapped the chain of his cuffs around her neck, squeezing until her struggles ceased, muffling her cries into the mud.
In the blink of an eye, Reese snatched up the fallen M4, his fingers closing around the slick metal with determination. In a quick motion, he brought the rifle to bear, the weight of it resting against his forearm. The big man spun around. His eyes wide as he registered what happened. His startled cry was drowned out by the deafening roar of gunfire as Reese unleashed a torrent of lead up the man's chest and into his face, sending him tumbling to the ground.
But as Reese's focus shifted to Jack, he realized with a sinking feeling that the magazine was empty. Panic surged through him, but before Jack could react, Jackie emerged from the dark. With a swift, decisive motion, she struck the man's heel with her knife, severing his Achilles tendon with a savage cry.
Jack buckled backwards onto the ground while letting out a guttural scream. Jackie wasted no time and crawled on top of him. Her nose was broken and face soaked in blood. The man was so stunned by the pain he hardly reacted. With a primal scream, she drove the knife into his neck, twisting it with a brutal motion, finishing it as Reese watched in horror.
Jackie gasped and slouched backwards off the man's body. Reese stumbled forward onto his feet, dropping the gun and rushing over to her. They collided with open arms. And cries of relief. 
5 MONTHS EARLIER
The bright summer day filled the classroom with an enveloping warmth, casting long shadows across the rows of empty desks. Jackie Summers stood at the podium in front of the class. She couldn't help but notice attendance was bleaker than usual. More and more students were dropping out.
Despite being in her early 40's Jackie had a youthful appearance. Her clean blond hair was pulled back into a braid that gently rested on the shoulder of her pale blue blouse. Her sharp green eyes briefly scanned the room. Scoffing to herself at the skeleton crew of students, before continuing her lecture.
She turned to face the chalkboard. A hastily sketched timeline stretched across its surface, marking the milestones of history. "Does anyone know why it was called the Great War?" she ventured, her voice echoing in the bare room. The response was silence, broken only by the occasional cough or shuffling of papers.
"Uh, Mrs. Summers?" One of the girls asked. "Yeah?" Jackie responded, turning back to face the class. "Will this be on the test?" "No, I don't think so." Jackie answered. She looked up and thought for a moment. "Actually yeah, it might... Just prepare for it to be. Okay?" The girl nodded and copied the timeline into her notebook.
As Jackie continued her task she was interrupted by the door swinging open, breaking the calm atmosphere. The entire class looked over to see Reese. A lean 19 year old boy with tousled black hair and blue eyes. His backpack swung from one shoulder as he carelessly strolled into the class, taking an exaggerated seat.
Jackie did her best to ignore the attempt at attention and continued the lesson. 10 minutes later the best rang. The class instinctively started packing up and heading out. "Reese, please stay for a moment." Jackie said. The students made several comments on their way out the door. "Oooh someones in trouble." One remarked. Reese exhaled dramatically and tossed his backpack on the ground, slumping back into his seat.
As the students funneled out and the door came to a close Jackie pulled up a chair to Reese's desk. He looked unamused. The classroom was static and quiet. She looked at him for a moment. Reese glaring back at her. "Reese" she gently said, "I know you're sick of these lectures." Reese's expression was blank. "I hate seeing this path you insist on going down." she continued. "I know the last few years have been hard on you. I know how devastating loss can be." Reese scoffed, dismissing her kind gesture. Jackie paused. Realizing she wasn't getting through to him this way.
She sighed "here's the reality. Reese you are 19. You are a super senior. If you keep missing class like this you're gonna fail. Then... you'll be sent to a Fedra military school. Is that really what you want?" She asked, her tone more strict. She waited for a response that Reese wouldn't give. Instead he crossed his arms and wouldn't entertain the conversation.
Jackie leaned forward. "You're a good student Reese. Just a couple years ago you were so eager to learn. I know you have potential. But I am telling you right now that I can't keep covering for you. Get it together, unless you want to spend the rest of a short lived life fighting the Fireflies and executing civilians." After a moment Reese nodded. Jackie could see a flicker of realization in his eyes. "So I'll see you at target practice in the morning?" She asked. Reese reluctantly agreed. "Bright and early Mrs. Summers." He smirked. "Good, get to your next class." she said standing up.
She watched the door close behind Reese. Her heart was tightening, hoping her words would get through to him. Meanwhile Reese walked the desolate halls of the old school building. Nearly all the classmates that he had come to know were gone. Families were leaving the quarantine zone left and right. Deciding that fending for themselves was a better alternative to living under Fedras rule.
The rows of empty lockers reminded him of his friends who have come and gone. All of their families had left. His heart sank while pondering what came of them. Knowing they're either dead or worse. There was no way anyone could survive outside the walls. Yet more and more people left everyday.
Reese approached Mr. Phillips' classroom, a sense of dread settling in the pit of his stomach at the thought of enduring yet another mundane math lesson. He lingered at the door for a moment, weighing his options, before finally making a quiet decision. With a resigned sigh, he turned on his heel and retraced his steps through the empty hallway, his footsteps echoing in the silence. He headed out the main entrance of the school. The bright summer day made his eyes squint. The warmth of the sun washed over him as he descended the stairs leading outside.
His stroll was cut short when a Fedra soldier stepped out from around the corner, stopping him in his tracks. His brooding frame was draped in dark blue body armor. An AK-47 firmly in his grip. Reese bumped right into him. Looking up at the man and fumbling back. "Schools not out until 4, where are you going?" The soldier questioned in a monotone voice. "I was just-" Reese started but was interrupted. "It's fine Mark, he's with me." Jackie called out while trotting down the stairs behind them.
The soldier let out a reassuring grunt. "My apologies Mrs. Summers." He started. "No worries, Mark. We're heading to the pantry. Teaching him how to take inventory," Jackie replied, her voice a soothing balm to Reese's frayed nerves. "Oh, good! Let me know if we got peaches in!" Mark exclaimed, giving Reese a firm pat on the shoulder. "Not if I get them first!" Jackie quipped, eliciting a chuckle from Reese. "Tell Kaitlin I said hi," Jackie remarked, continuing forward with her student. "Will do. Take care, Mrs. Summers!" Mark called after them as they walked away, the echo of his words fading into the vibrant summer afternoon.
Reese couldn't help but be embarrassed. As he walked alongside Mrs. Summers. He knew he was fortunate that she held such a respected position in the zone, even sitting on the council. Despite this, he couldn't help but feel a pang of self-consciousness. "Are we actually going to the pantry?" he finally asked. Jackie sighed. "Nah, just walk with me." She replied softly, her voice carrying a weight of burden.
It was a picture-perfect day, the sun casting its golden glow upon the quaint streets lined with rustic buildings and towering evergreens. Cascading snow capped mountains painted the horizon. The air was alive with the bustle of nature, the melodious chirping of birds mingling with the rustle of leaves and the distant hum of activity. Yet beneath the tranquil façade, a palpable tension hung in the air. The town, once bustling with life, now bore the scars of its dwindling population, its streets eerily quiet except for the occasional patrol of Fedra troops, and the wary glances of the remaining inhabitants.
Reese surveyed the dilapidated quarantine zone, its state worse than he had ever seen. Firefly attacks had become alarmingly frequent, each one a reminder of Fedra's struggle against a relentless tide. He couldn't help but question the futility of it all. What was the point of fighting when defeat seemed inevitable?
As they continued their stroll through the town, Mrs. Summers led Reese to a quiet corner where a sturdy chain-link fence bordered the edge of the quarantine zone. Stopping before the fence, Mrs. Summers gestured for Reese to join her as she peered through, her gaze fixed on the lush overgrown landscape stretching out before them. "It's quite the view, isn't it?" Mrs. Summers remarked. Reese nodded, though his expression remained guarded. "Yeah, I guess so," he replied, his tone revealing little.
"It's hard to picture the horrors that lay beyond this very fence" Mrs. Summers continued, her words heavy with an obvious message. "A world where the rules we cling to no longer exist." Reese remained silent for a moment, lost in thought. "Do you ever wonder what it's like out there?" he finally asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Mrs. Summers' response was sharp, her tone coated with bitterness "I don't have to wonder," she declared, her anger palpable. "It's a fucking nightmare Reese.." She started "Yeah, life here sucks, but it's nothing compared to what's out there. You don't realize how good we have it"
Reese was almost stunned. He had known Mrs. Summers for over 4 years and had never seen her bark like this. He remained quiet, realizing that she was grappling with some distant memory. He didn't have the gull to press her about her experiences.
Jackie interrupted the awkward silence. "I'm just trying to get through to you Reese. You can have a good life. You just need to apply yourself. Being angry at the world will only leave you broken-hearted and cold." Reese remained unresponsive. Allowing the weight of her words to settle between them while they watched the tree branches sway in the wind. Reese cleared his throat. "I will keep that in mind." He said softly.
"Hmm" Jackie retorted through pursed lips. She looked down and studied her shoes for a moment. She gently kicked the fence pole a couple times then looked back up as if she were debating something. "Target practice tomorrow." She stated before walking away, leaving Reese with his thoughts in the quiet of the day.
