The Post-Blockbuster Millennial American Dream

You know you have issues when The Fat Jewish constitutes your daily morning Bible reading. Today, it dawned on me that I’m the (millennial) American Dream: I wake up at noon and spend the rest of my morning—afternoon, really—blogging like it’s a legit occupation. I’m Sex & The City sans the sex. Or the city. (Or the money.)

But I can’t complain; to be the child who uses “I’m trying to spend some time with myself” as an excuse for her unemployment at family reunions is a privilege—I’m now familiar with a wide range of judgmental stares. (Twenty-eight, to be precise.) Should my future teen daughter date a retired Jonas Brother, I will have twenty-eight looks to pull from.

I had a feeling I was uncool, but yesterday, when my music teacher said I’m naturally good at singing opera, my worst fears were confirmed. Uncoolness runs through my veins. This could just be the thing to make me 100% repelling to the male kind on Tinder. (I have finally cracked the code!)

The problem with living in the post-'00s generation is that it’s impossible to date someone if you’re a lazy person. You need to put in the work to ‘online date.’ Swipe left, swipe right, repeat. If this were 2002, I’d know the entire Blockbuster staff by name by now and would probably be dating the checkout guy. (My mom would prefer that I at least date the manager, but I’m not very ambitious, to be honest.) Instead, with Netflix, all I do is engage in wine-induced Twitter outbursts every time I watch a Joseph Gordon-Levitt film. Highly unattractive habit, I know.

In a world where everyone is expected to brag about their lives on Instagram, I wonder what my lack of social media activity communicates: That I have nothing to look forward to? That I’m coping with severe depression? That I have died? Or worse—that I’m going through a divorce from a secret marriage? I now think twice before sharing anything, especially when most of my posting activity constitutes #ThrowbackThursdays, as though my present could never measure up to the joys of my past.

Oh, I can feel that wine-induced verborrhea coming. Be still, my dear heart.

Agree with you about TikTok, that’s not for them 😅 I’m not a fan of them saying that they are “telling our stories” because that’s not what they’re doing; they’re telling other people’s stories (like with having Zara McDermott explain yesterdays engagement, that was good).

But we also haven’t seen anything new in these videos — we knew what the children were wearing, we had already seen their excitement, we’ve seen the sitting room and front door of KP. It’s presented in a different way but I wouldn’t say that we have really seen anything about their private life at all, which is very smart.

Yeah, the "our stories" part was a bit weird but I understand what they meant. I agree with you that the way they did it yesterday was great, that's how they should do it whenever possible. And that's why it's important to complement the information they put in those videos with the captions.

I also agree with what you said in your second paragraph. It's actually a bit funny that many believe that William and Catherine will share a bit more of their private life with the world or worse, that they will invite the cameras - even theirs - into it. Everything about them is controlled, and the videos we saw for the Coronation are proof of that.

Those videos left a feeling that we saw a lot of behind the scenes but we didn't really see anything or at least not much. That's why I didn't quite understand those excited because they showed us more of KP, they showed us the same room from a different angle, nothing else but it's the feeling that we saw more that counts. And that's why I think the way they did it was great. The videos were great and generated the attention that matters.

Personally, I think the press is overreacting as usual and a lot of fans are expecting too much, it's like all the drama and excitement we all felt when they launched their own youtube channel, a lot of expectations weren't met. I think what we'll see will be more of the little we've seen these days - no, not what we saw for the crowning - better posts, more eye-catching stories and more elaborate videos and better photos. Maybe they will be encouraged to post relatively longer videos on youtube but I don't expect more than that.

Now, as for tiktok, I think it's a bad idea. Although I don't doubt that they would just post the same videos they would post on Instagram and Twitter, the comments would be atrocious, ignorant and annoying. TikTok is worse than Twitter in many ways and one of them is misinformation about the royals. The amount of bullshit I've heard in the last 2 weeks is embarrassing. I don't think that's a good idea and I don't think it's necessary either. They should leave TikTok to the fans.

little bit of a rant but: do you ever have a piece of media you really enjoy within its own bubble but that becomes really hard to enjoy once you're exposed to the fandom for it? i feel like that's what fairy tale is becoming for me lol. i did find it a lot of fun and thought the romance was cute but the fandom's inability to even entertain the idea that the show might have flaws really frustrates me. even moreso when this attitude is used to criticize other dramas (not talking about tere bin here. people can fully have at it with that) that are arguably dealing in way more complex ideas than fairy tale ever will. like not everything is about clear cut choices and forever well presenting characters! i do understand where the hype for either mc comes from (women feeling liberated of "responsible" decision making via umeed vs. women feeling charmed by a man like farjaad who does not resort to misogyny or violence) but i also don't think the expectations that come from that can be imposed onto dramas that are discussing more complex ideas often entrenched in exploring gender biases in our society. does that make sense? like if we're going to discuss some of the harms of society on the behavior of individuals, we are inevitably going to see some of those harmful behaviors portrayed and explored. and not every show goes the right way of actually criticizing those behaviors, but plenty do! and there is a cohesive point to why the harmful behaviors are highlighted, even if we don't like them! idk. maybe it's overly judgmental but i feel like i can't take fairy tale fans seriously half the time lol and i remember you feeling the same way when you initially talked about it way back when

fandoms have a way of either amplifying one's enjoyment of a piece of media or completely ruining it, there's no in between. I have lost count of how many shows that I used to enjoy with all my might, I had to step away from its "main" fandom from to be able to continue to enjoy them. fandom especially on twitter toh is more explosive than other platforms cuz the responses are so quick and there's almost nothing private there. hashtags are open for all of the users to explore. and even if you DON'T hashtag the show, there's still a way of what you're saying coming up for users either via a simple search option or by twt's fucked up algorithm that INSISTS on showing you the posts your mutuals interact with. there's almost no privacy there unless it's a locked account. that level of being public is not available on instagram and definitely not on tumblr where the rules of engagement are completely different and it's easier to tune out the fandom noise. which is why no matter how much i TRY to, I cannot escape the FT opinions. and yes with time I have become more open to the show and its fandom but I still don't have a lot of respect for either of it. what you say is right, FT is a show has only ONE thing going on for it and that's the main ship. Umeed is apparently a refreshing character and Farjaad a green flag one and somehow just this combination is enough to overpower all of the show's other flaws. somehow their few good interactions in 30 episodes is enough to hail the show as some masterpiece. ya know I find is so funny that FT fandom has so cleanly separated their ship from the rest of the show. any criticism against the show's other characters and events is valid. but any criticism against farmeed is not as if they are an unrelated entity altogether??? how does that make sense??? khair. there's something that I was told ages ago which has influenced much of my perspective about gauging the quality of something. the "good" is not the "absence" of bad but the "denial" of it.

it's like "XYZ is honest" vs "XYZ is not dishonest". both technically mean the same thing. but the second statement first confirms that there's a trait called "dishonesty" that exists and then makes it point to state that XYZ is not that. it's such an important element to be incorporated in stories where the bad/evil first has to be established and identified before its antithesis is introduced. to address your points here...it's like the FT fandom just wants a very sanitized story to indulge in because they do not have either the capacity or just the sheer willingness to indulge in a more complicated story. Farjaad for the most part is a fairly easy character to root for. he's not a bad guy..even his slightly twisted actions are not done out of malice. his selfishness is "cute". one doesn't have to compromise or defend their morals to root for a guy like him and subsequently invest in his romantic endeavors. Umeed, on the other hand, is more twisted but like you said she's a character so liberated from the conventional ties of making the "right decisions for everyone's sake" that for "hardcore feminists" (the self-proclaimed majority of the FT fandom) her flaws are more the reasons to love to her than to criticize her.

Compared to this, the other PakDramas and their stories are more complex than that. unlike FT's sanitized route, these stories HAVE to show the hard to swallow traits in either the main characters or the supporting ones to drive home the point of what's the "good" there. take Yunhi for example. if not for Dadaji's patriarchal mindset, can Dawood's character really shine? Dawood is the antithesis of Dadaji. Dadaji, Razia, Danny, the Phupha..these characters are needed in the narrative to establish why the opinions of Kim and the ones supporting Kim are the "right" one. Kim and Dawood have to "fight" their mindsets to triumph. the existence and acknowledgement of these traits should precede the denial of them.

how the FT fandom makes up for any lack of "wrong" in its narrative is that it then turns to other stories and compares characters/situations from there to fill the gap of existence and acknowledgement of "wrong" that their heroes don't have in its own canon. so the bad guys become the other MCs of other stories who don't have a sanitized enough image. chalo TB is an extreme example, let's take examples of shows that fall in the same Ramazan special light hearted genre that FT is part of. for the fans of Farjaad, even someone like Arsal (Suno Chanda s1 as S2 is a thing that just simply does not exist) is not a good enough guy because of how he occasionally treated Jiya. Arsal has done the unthinkable of raising his hand on Jiya although no strike was landed, it's an offense that's so mighty that he automatically kicks him out of the "good guys" list which Farjaad is topping solo now. never mind that Arsal fucking up and then realizing his mistake and making up for it by supporting Jiya in a way that no one in the family was WAS his entire arc. but nah..it's bordering the grey line. and heroes should only be green.

the irony of the FT fandom then proclaiming to be the sanest and wisest of them all isn't lost on me.

of COURSE i can't take this fandom seriously. contrary to what they think they are doing i.e. sticking to their side by just hyping their fav..the reality is different. they have their noses stuck up in the business of every other fandom. sure the toxicity isn't as huge as the TB fandom but again, TB fandom is humongous. for its size, FT fandom has plenty of fuckery. and I have noticed this in my few interactions with them. it's better to keep distance from them..innka koi bhi opinion itna khaas hai nahin ke usspe dhyaan diya jaye.

Be brave

You know those days where you just need to write down a thought you have? Yeah. It’s that day for me. So let me ramble…

Taking a break from Writeblr means anything. It can mean: “I’m going on full-end hiatus for six months at least!”

It can also mean: “I don’t interact with my community at the moment.”

It can also mean: “I simply don’t want to post something I need to write down.”

I’m taking a break at the moment. Not the type of break, where I don’t come online. More the type of break, where I stop, reset and try to find my voice again.

If I see a post I want to share, I put it into my queue. No tags. No comments. Just plain repost.

If I want to show you something immediately, I repost immediately. Sometimes with tags. Usually not.

I have a lot of content in my drafts. WIP intros, character intros, random stuff, ask games, ask games answers. Why don’t I post these? Because I want to be fully present when I share it with you.

I listen to a podcast called “Voice Hugs” (go listen! It’s really good!). There is an episode about starting something new. Anything. And Rowena said: “We are not afraid to start, because it is new. We are afraid, because it is uncomfortable.”

She is right. I have many points on my agenda. Stuff, I wanted to do, but haven’t. This includes starting a YouTube Channel. Vlogging. Publishing writing.

I didn’t do all of this, because I was uncomfortable. Because it stressed me out. Because it was a strange feeling. But over time, it becomes routine. It becomes normal.

Life doesn’t become easier, you simply change your “normal state”. The same is with Tumblr.

I am at 160 Followers today. I never had so many followers in my life before! Not on Instagram. Not on Twitter. Never. Not even on Wattpad, when I was active and had a story with over 1.5k reads (for me, this number is extremely large!)

I do have plans! I love to create content! I love social media. The possibility to engage with people all over the world. And I say thank you to each of those 160 followers.

But I am afraid of this strange feeling. It is new. It is uncommon. It is uncomfortable. Sharing ideas is uncomfortable. Not knowing the rules I play by is uncomfortable.

I am constantly circling in my comfort zone. In that little space, trying to avoid to interact with the risky life.

But risk includes chance. Chance to succeed. Chance to change.

I want to be braver. More open. More engaging. More of sharing and receiving. More of vlogging and making silly faces. More of those points in my agenda. The dusty agenda I refuse to give up.

I feel like I am about to step into a new part of my life right now. I am scared, of course I am! But I am also curious, where this road will lead me.

I am basing my content mainly on what could be interesting, rather than simply doing the things I want to do. I don’t post about my WIP, because I think it will be boring for you. Because I think, I will make things more difficult for me to do. To publish. I don’t trust in myself.

Jay Shetty quoted from a writer, his name was Charles Horton Cooley: “I am not, what I think I am. I am not, what you think I am. I am what I think, you think, I am.”

That’s true. I act not the way I am. I act how I think I should act. How I think other people expect me to act. I started Tumblr, because I could write. I love social media, I love Instagram, but I’m not much of a photographer. Again, something I am uncomfortable with, because it is new.

I thought: Hey! Here, you can simply do something you love! Talk about your stuff!

You know what? I didn’t. You want to know why? Because I hate bothering people with things they didn’t tell me they are interested in. I am fascinated by how other writeblrs simply throw out their mind, their heart into this void and talk about stuff, they are genuinely interested in, without knowing, if other people like it too.

I am jealous of these people, because they are carefree. They simply do, what they want to.

I did something that some may view differently: I made a space to come back into my comfort zone. It was not the best… I would not say decision, but the reason behind it wasn’t good.

I did my discord and I’m inactive to. It’s new. It’s strange. It still isn’t the norm yet. But I want to link each one of you together. I want to bring people with similar interests together over something I create. May this be my discord or my work or anything.

I want to give people a pat on the shoulder and say: “It’s okay. I’ve been there too. Don’t worry. It will work out.”

I hope, I can — one day — be a person, people go to, to seek advice.

Creative Critical Reflection

How does your project use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups?

1)Whispers from the Past is an opening film in the horror genre. There are several conventions related to the genre in my film opening challenges and respects. Other conventions using conventions make it easier for the audience to recognize the genre of the film therefore, knowing what to expect and making the story easy to grasp for example, in my opening, there is a creating sound of a door opening by using this in my phone. I believe I establish the genre so the audience can know the key aspects of the story that will unfold which links the supernatural and mystery conventions such as dark and light, cold colors, and old abandoned locations used to create the appropriate Mise en scene for the opening. One aspect of my film is that it can be seen as both as using as breaking conventions in the past even if it is only played for two minutes, the story somewhat unfolds the future. When it comes to sound, there are no conventions broken as my film uses a normal ambiance sound. There is another aspect that breaks the conventions of storytelling. The audience knows from the beginning that the story is not a usual one because the character doesn't know the story which causes the feeling of uncertainty that extends to the audience, without any usage of Music we wanted to catch the attention of the audience by using strange sound as a character is confused by the creek and starts to panic. This also makes the social issues and groups represented as such things are common and the character might create fear.

2)Whispers from the past, aiming to evoke strong emotions and create tension, immerse viewers in a terrifying experience. Our primary goal is to evoke fear of suspense, and in my film, it is done through an eerie atmosphere to keep the audience on edge. It often creates fear such as supernatural or loss of control. Throughout the film. There is only one aspect that keeps the audience's attention present. Overall the camera shorts angles cuts are the same. Camera movements and angles also help the audience stay rather than become disinterested. However we didn't use any unnecessary throughout the film, there is a calm ambient sound when all of a sudden there’s a creek. This keeps the audience engaged and creates tension. There are various ways to promote the film. We can start with creating an Online site or advertising it on social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, et cetera other strategies would be distributing it and presenting it in the theatre or private screening.

3)I had no idea how to edit or even operate and hardware on the Mac studio display. I'm going to talk about my editing skills which I never had and I was clueless about it before working on this project. I had never used any editing software ever before but because I had the editor's role I had to work very hard and learn how to operate the software. A few things that helped me were online demos and I watched videos on YouTube about basic editing techniques for the project. I use Final Cut Pro out of other software, it is comparatively easy and super useful when you really know what is going on and know how to use it properly. watching tutorials. I learned how to work with color correction, color, grading, and other requirements for the project. It took some practice and a few trials and errors but I managed to give my best although I didn't reach the full potential of the software. I was given two roles, editor and production designer. Now I will talk about my role as a production designer I have developed numerous skills throughout the project. I've got a better vision throughout the project. I've got a better vision and can visualize strongly and creatively. It can get a little hectic on the day of the project. It is important to prepare beforehand and to understand the setting and various skills I've developed strong interpersonal skills that are essential when working with the director cinematographer et cetera. It has become easier for me to picture a set and know what is necessary. It is important to pay attention to every detail of the set design, props, costume, and overall visual aesthetics. I have noticed a major improvement in my editing skills and as a production designer and I'm happy to see my skills have increased drastically.

4) I have used many different programs while working on this project. We used a lot of props and hardware during the filming software and online programs were both used. Technologies be used on location while filling we used one continuous light(FX 400) throughout the production, we used the Canon 5D Mark 3 camera, and one tripod. There was usage of many props for example making of the bed, bedsheets, books, soft toys, lights, and printouts. I use my iPhone 14 pro as the clapper and to take stills. The device used for editing was a Mac studio display. The software and online programs used in this project. for editing I used Final Cut Pro X, I used an app for the clapper, and Tumblr to maintain the blocks. I used YouTube to search for foley sounds. I used Microsoft Excel Word to create a master breakdown and I used 'thatstoryboard' website to create a storyboard.
