No but when Kesha said “So used to abandoning myself I can’t believe i’m still alive” and “I am the one that I’ve been fighting the whole time” and “Oh i don’t wanna be here anymore, stuck inside my head here anymore” and “I’m so sick of myself, you don’t know” and “I don’t wanna do this on my own” and “I’m at the top of the mountain, with a gun to my head” and “There’s a fine line between hope and delusion, between what’s right and what we’ve just gotten used to” and “There’s a fine line between letting go and giving up, between happy and stupid as fuck” and “Am i missing you or am I missing who i used to be?” and “Think I killed the part of me that i like” and “So if hatin’ me helps you love yourself, then do your worst, baby, give me hell” and “Gotta just laugh, so i don’t die” and “Life’s got me fallin’ to my knees” and “But if you ask me now, all I’ve ever wanted to be is happy”

Gifting your Husband Boudoir Photos
for your Anniversary
Featuring the MSBY Black Jackals
Tumblr media
MSBY Black Jackals including Alexandre Joffe and Oriver Barnes x Female Reader (she/her pronouns)
Warnings: swearing, suggestive content
A/N: real talk, writers block and diminishing self-confidence in my writing has got me struggling. So please accept my these hcs whilst I work on others!
Shoyo Hinata
This absolute angel omg
It was via your friends suggestion that you make something for Shoyo to “take on the road”
You planned to take the photos right before your anniversary to surprises him
The photos turned out amazing and you looked incredible!
So why were you so nervous?
It’s not like your husband had never seen you like this
Maybe it was because the camera always seemed to add pounds and make every angle unflattering
Your photographer swore the pictures turned out amazing and since the photographs weren’t ready until the day of your anniversary, you didn’t get a chance to look at them
You quietly handed the box to Shoyo as he smiled at you
“What did you get me baby?” He asked as you shrugged and blushed
He carefully opened it, seeing the eloquent wrapping and album
“Is this an album of my greatest moments?” He joked as he slowly turned the cover over and opened the first page
He immediately slams it shut, eyes wide 😳
He looks at you, face bright red and slowly opens the book again
Please he has to check to make sure he’s not dreaming Yn 🤭
“I-I thought it would be something nice for you to have when you travel,” you say, playing innocently with your fingers in your lap
Your husband doesn’t hear you Yn, man’s is too busy scrolling the pages of your masterpiece
“Do you like it? I know some of the angles might not be that good-”
“YN these are all so fucking perfect, god you’re so perfect! I love you so much!” He says, grabbing you and hauling you into his lap
“Are they really that good?” You ask as you begin to look at the magnificent pictures in front of you
“Are you kidding Yn? How do you expect me to share a room with any of the guys when I have this book to look at?” Shoyo groans as you laugh
Don’t worry Yn, your husband is well taken care of
Shion Inunaki
I 100% know this man is so funny
Legit he’s probably the comic relief the Jackals need
This man doesn’t take life to seriously and neither do you
Matter of fact, you two often play pranks on each other
Lighthearted and fun tricks that keep things fun and keep your marriage entertaining
That’s why you decided to surprise your husband with the gift that keeps on giving
Pictures of you 🥰
You always joke with him about how he has a literal slideshow screensaver of you
So you thought you’d give him some “new material” 😌
“Geez Yn what’s in this box a brick?” Your husband says unwrapping the giant box
“Yes Shion because nothing says ‘I love you’ like a brick,” you say, rolling your eyes
Your husband laughs, opening the tissue paper to see a white photo album
“Awe babe you redid our wedding album?” he says opening the book
What a naive boy 😅
His eyes widen when he sees the first photo, instantly shutting it and looking around
You sit there, a huge smirk on your face as your husband eyes lock with yours
“YN you’re naked in these!” He whisper shouts as you burst out laughing
“Just thought you’d like a little inspiration to think about during a game,” you winked as your husband carefully thumbed thought every single page
“The fact that you think I’ll ever be able to focus on volleyball again with you looking like this, fuck YN!” He said as he studied every picture
“I mean, I have the outfits if you need more inspiration,” you said
Your husbands eyes snapped up and he quickly stood, grabbing your hand and tugging you to your bedroom
“Fuck those photos, I want the real thing!”
Atsumu Miya
This man wants to show his gorgeous wife off to every single person he knows
“Hey there, nice to meet you! This is my beautiful wife YN Miya!”
“Hey, great spike! Have I told you about how amazing my wife YN Miya is?”
Atsumu is that flashy husband who is so incredibly proud of you in everything you do
So when you surprise him with the gift of boudoir photos
Oh boy 🥵
This man will absolutely D I E on the spot
“What’s this princess?” Your husband asks as he opens the gift
“Since you won’t be around for our anniversary, I wanted to give you my gift a little early,” you say, smiling brightly
He opens the gift, while simultaneously talking
“Babe, I haven’t had a chance to get you a gif- 😳,” your husband stops, mid sentence as he stares at the photos in front of him
Man’s is silent
Yn you better take a picture for Samu and Suna because you know they are going to want to see a speechless Atsumu 😂
“Yn is this you?” He asks
You 👉🏻😐 who else would it be?
“Baby, seriously? Fuck are these even real?? This is an illusion, pinch me I’m dreaming,” he says
Say less, you run and pinch him take every chance you get Yn!
“Ouch! Well shit, I guess I’m not dreaming! Babe, fuck you look incredible!” He says, drooling on page after page of your gorgeous figure
“You like them?” You say, all giddy
“Are ya kidding me? Can we make canvas prints of these? I we need one over our bed and over the fireplace, hell we need one in every room!” He says taking out his phone and taking pictures
“Babe, what are you doing?” You ask as he carefully turns the pages
“Taking photos for a slideshow! No way I’m traveling with this piece of artwork!” He says as you laugh, kissing your husband
Kiyoomi Sakusa
The man who does not expect it at all
His sweet, innocent wife doing such a grand gesture for him??
It took a lot of courage for you to do these and you were looking forward to sharing them with your husband
You’d always been proud of the way you looked and so was Kiyoomi
He loved you so much and practically worshipped you
On your anniversary, you decided to surprise him with the photos
You’d been married for a year now and he had been traveling a lot for the Jackals
You missed him and wanted to give him something incredibly special 🥰
“YN, what the heck? This box is huge!” He said, grabbing it from you as you sat next to him and smiled
“I wanted to give you something special Omi, something nobody else in the world has!” You smiled
“Damn, something nobody else has?” He said, unwrapping the box and taking out the book
He unties the ribbon and slowly opens to the first page
A hand written note says “To the love of my life, Happy Anniversary! Love YN”
“Awe babe, you didn’t-” he says before immediately stopping, his breath hitching at the sight of the first photo
“He looks at the photo, then at you, then back to the photo
Then he turns the page to look at another photo before setting the album down in front of him, wiping his hand down his face
“Kiyoomi, don’t you like them?” You asked as his shocked eyes meet yours
“YN, liking them isn’t the problem. I need to prepare myself to look at such beauty,” he says as you giggle
He picks up the book and carefully looks at every page, groaning when he sees a particular picture he likes
He carefully sets the book down, picking up his phone and opening his texting app
“What are you doing Omi?” You ask
“Texting captain that I won’t be in tomorrow, because there’s no way I can be expected to practice with those images plastered in my mind.”
Kotaro Bokuto
Hype husband for life
Literally this man gets so excited the minute he sees you
He’s the idiot that’s frantically waving to you in the crowd screaming “THATS MY WIFE!”
Literally he’s so in love with you YN 🥹
So when you gift him boudoir pictures
Oh lawd YN watch yourself 😂
Literally this man will just sit and watch you undress, eyes glimmering
How do you think he will react?
“A present for me?” Your husband screeches as you giggle and hand it to him
He immediately rips it open, zero chill ✋🏻
“Ko calm down its delicate!” You say as he looks at you
“You got me something delicate? YN didn’t Akaashi say never to get me anything that could break?” He says as you laugh
“Not that kind of delicate Ko, just open it slowly,” you say as your husband nods and carefully opens the book
“Ohh I love books Yn!” He says opening the book wide, his eyes landing on a stunning picture of you holding a sheet over your nude body
He quickly slammed the books shut, gulping loudly as sweat forms on his brows
“YN uhh- did you know you’re naked in these photos?” He says as you laugh
“Yes Ko, I took boudoir photos just for you!” You say
“For me?” He beams as he opens the book again and studies every single page
“Baby, you are so pretty! I can’t believe how beautiful you are!” He says as you gush at how adorable he is
“Awe I’m glad you like them Ko!” You say, squeezing his bicep
“I like them a lot, actually so much that I uh-kind of have a problem now,” he says as you see the very prominent issue appearing his his grey sweatpants
“Come on silly, let me help you with that!”
Adriah Tomas
Another man who just worships his wife
He’s like SIX FOOT SEVEN INCHES tall Yn 🥵
Ugh he’s such an attentive and supportive husband
Literally going out of his way to help you with whatever you need
He works hard at practice then comes home and helps in whatever way he can
We love all the support!
So much so that you decided it was time to give him something special in return!
Adriah is the type of man to never ask for anything
He’s so hard to buy gifts for because like he never tells you he wants anything!
So for your 3 year anniversary, you decide to take matters into your own hands
By getting him a special gift, a gift only you can give him
Now unfortunately he was traveling for your anniversary so you couldn’t give him the gift in person
Instead you decided to send it to him 🙃
He had no idea it was coming, so when he got back to his hotel room, he opened it, smiling when he saw it was from his gorgeous wife
Immediately he opened the book, peering at the first picture and slamming the book closed
His eyes widen as he frantically searched for his phone, FaceTiming you as quickly as he could
“Hey babe!” You answered nonchalantly
“YN what he heck are you doing sending me this?” Adriah said in a whisper shout
“What you don’t like it?” You said, big puppy dog eyes on display
“Baby, I fucking love it but god, what if the guys had seen this!” He said quickly peeking at some of the other pictures in the book and groaning
“Well then they would know how hot your wife is,” you said shrugging
“Babe, nobody gets to see you like this except for me ok?” He said as you laughed
“Adriah I know! I just wanted you to have something special while you were on the road,” you said as he smiled back
“I love it baby, thank you but do you think you might have to sometime to umm, FaceTime for a while,” he said, blushing as you smirked
“Don’t worry hun, I’ll help take care of you.”
Shugo Meian
This man THIS MAN 😩
Ugh god YN you are one lucky lady let me tell you!
This man is such an all star husband
Seriously, he is incredible!
Literally so supportive and your #1 fan no matter what you do!
He travels a lot but he always makes time for you, whether it be sending a text or FaceTiming
He even sends gifts and flowers just to make sure you know he’s thinking of you
Your husband was coming back from a few weeks on the road and you decided to surprise him with a boudoir photo shoot for your anniversary
Oh but you didn’t stop there Yn, no you pictures you most favorite picture and made a whole full size canvas of that baby 😍
You hung it up, above your bed as a big surprise for your husband
You knew he’d be coming home so you “pretend”to be busy in your master bedroom so you’d get to see his reaction first hand
“Babe, where are you?” Your husband said, bag hitting the floor as he immediately searched for you
“I’m the bedroom love!” You shout as you heard the door open
“You didn’t greet me at the door- HOLY SHIT!” He said, stopping in his tracks as he peered at the giant canvas of your gorgeous figure above your marital bed
“Surprise!” You shout, your husbands mouth falling slack ad he just stares
“Shugo, hello? Earth to Shugo!” You said approaching him as you waved your hand in front of his face
“YN is that really you?” He asked as you laughed and nodded
He grabbed you close, eyes still locked on the portrait
“Fuck baby, you look incredible! That’s my gorgeous wife holy crap!” He said as you grabbed the rest of the photos on the bed and handed them to him
“Here’s the rest of the prints from the photo shoot,” you said as he flipped through the pages, drool practically falling from his open mouth
“Damn baby! Are you trying to push me to retire or what?” He said as you laughed and hugged him
“Nah just trying to give you a little incentive to keep coming home to me,” you said as he hugged and kissed you
“Baby that’s one thing you’ll never have to worry about.”
Alexandre Joffe
Our resident skyscraper
God what an incredible addition to MSBY
Kudos to the drafting team for that one and high fives to our queen for bagging this hot ass man 🥵
Literally he’s so in love with you Yn it’s kind of gross
Like I totes see him as one of those guys who just loves to relax and chill at home, watching movies or shows all day
Hes also one of those guys who will give you 500 kisses before leaving you to go on the road
He hates leaving for so long and you hate it too
So that’s why , for your first anniversary you decided to surprise him with a special something
A friend of yours had done boudoir photos for her husband and suggested them to you
You immediately booked an appointment and got the photos done
Alexandre was set to leave the next day so you decided to surprise him before he left
“Babe what’s this? Our anniversary isn’t for a few weeks yet,” he said slowly unwrapping the gift
“I know but you won’t be here for our anniversary and well, I wanted you to have it for on the road,” you said smiling
He smiled back, leaning over to kiss you as he opened the gift
“A photo album?” He questioned as you nodded
He looked confused but went with the flow anyways
Then he opened it and immediately his eyes shot open, hands planting on both sides of the kitchen counter as he leaned over to look at your gorgeous body
You watched as he studied the pictures for what seemed like hours
“So?” You asked, playing with your fingers nervously
“So I’m wondering how much of a fine I’ll get if I fly out in a few days vs tomorrow,” he said, quickly grabbing you and hoisting you over his shoulder
“Alexandre! What the hell?” You laughed as he hauled you to the bedroom, stopping as he turned around quickly grabbing the book
“Can’t forget this!” He said as he ran with you and the book to your bedroom
Oriver Barnes
This man is so chill, I adore him!
He just seems like the kind of guy to take life one day at a time
He’s also like 6’9” so like 🫡
Honestly I’m so sick of you Yn 😐
This man is such a sweet and loving husband
The kind who would literally lay down in a puddle of mud and let you walk over him in order to keep your feet dry
He’s always opening doors, holding your hand and kissing your forehead
A giant sweetheart!
He works so hard and you think he deserves a special something
You pondered for a while what you could possibly gift your sweet husband
You wanted something special and unique
That’s when the idea to do a boudoir shoot came to you
Your husband always told you he loved when you wore lingerie so why not give him pictures he could cherish forever
Especially one very special image of you, naked in his MSBY Jersey 👀
Oof he will simply die YN
In fact, you had the print made into a canvas for your bedroom
You came out of the room, giant canvas wrapped up and handed it to your husband
“YN what is this?” He said taking the large wrapped gift and laying it on the counter
“Just a little something,” you said as you husband took a bit of his food and opened his gift
His eyes widened as he began to choke on his food, coughing
“Babe are you ok?” You asked as your husband nodded quickly, eyes widening as he saw your form spread on the canvas
“Angel, fuck you look incredible in my jersey! Fuck look at you,” he said, gently caressing the canvas as he studied it
“You like it? I thought we could put it in our bedroom!” You said, smiling
“Are you kidding? Im carrying this everywhere I go Yn!” He said, hauling it under his arm and grabbing your hand as you giggled”
“Where are we going?” You laughed
“To get my jersey, I need to see Mrs. Barnes in it right now!”

What each marauder’s fav musical would be (in my opinion):
James - beetlejuice (chaotic af, funny and happy ending…)
Regulus - Jekyll and Hyde (thought provoking, sad ending also he’d find ‘bitch bitch bitch’ funny bc that’s lowkey exactly what the ppl at functions he has to attend are like. Also he loves ‘bring on the men’ and I won’t accept questions and if ur confused about the name, it’s exactly what it sounds like.)
Remus - Hamilton (he just…would love it.)
Sirius - Six (no question. And he would sing ‘Don’t lose ur head’ at the drop of a hat. He defo learnt the dance to ex-wives and six finale)
Peter - Dear Evan Hansen (he just gives me those vibes like he genuinely would love it and I love that 4 him)
Barty - Heathers (pretty sure this was in like one of my first posts too but he would LOVE heathers.)
Evan - Moulin Rouge! (OMG this one was actually hard icl I couldn’t think of one for ages but I actually think this is perfect for Evan. He definitely prefers like plainer style of stuff and shit and pretends not to like musicals but he goes excited like a puppy dog with proper heart eyes if you show him the absolutely over decorated stage they perform moulin rouge on. And you best believe he knows all the lyrics of ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry but no no my friend it’s not because he listens to her, in fact he’d probably be confused about the annoying pop song arrangement of ‘the song from moulin rouge’ also he loves the song mashup bit in ‘backstage romance’ that they dance to (if you don’t know what I mean then play this song but skip to 2:30 bc the start of the song won’t make sense without the entire plot detailed to you) because I say so because everyone does because it’s impossible not to.)
Mary - Anastasia (look I will not be accepting slander of this musical and neither would Mary. It is a masterpiece.)
Lily - Jesus Christ Superstar (fucking love this musical and only the best for Lily Evans. She would love it because I said so.)
Pandora - Hadestown (thought provoking, gorgeous music, based off a Greek myth. Just yes. Also I can picture her humming Orpheus’ tune but especially the extended bit in ‘wait for me’ )
Marlene - Les Misérables (ok so I know this might seem like an odd option for her but hear me out hear me out…Marlene attempting to perform all the parts in ‘one day more’ and blasting ‘Do you hear the people sing?’ from her phone as an attempt to scare people.)
Dorcas - Phantom of the Opera (the absolute dramatic theme is definitely her jam and she absolutely knows how to play it on every instrument. Like she doesn’t necessarily know how to play an instrument but you can bet she at least knows the phantom’s theme on it.)
my theatre kid side is rlly coming thru in this oops
also if anyone wants to know the specific albums (bc a lot of them have more than one recording) of the musical that I prefer and am thinking of as I write this then check below ‘keep reading’
beetlejuice/hamilton/anastasia all only have one - the original bway cast
Jekyll and Hyde - ‘Jekyll and Hyde: The Gothic Musical Thriller’ (the 1995 one with Anthony Warlow as J/H)
Six - ‘Six: the musical (studio cast recording)’ sorry to the Broadway cast lovers, I prefer the og Brit one bc it feels weird to hear them with American accents to me
Dear Evan Hansen - the original Broadway cast recording, not the movie one
Heathers - Original West end cast. Again sorry to all the ppl that prefer the off broadway one, west end heathers ver till I die, it’s just better like ‘never shut up again’? I say no? I’m sorry it’s just better, no matter how much u say ‘blue’ is better than ‘your welcome’
Moulin Rouge - original Broadway cast, as much as I love Nicole Kidman I just prefer the bway cast recording to the movie recs
Jesus Christ Superstar - ‘Jesus Christ Superstar (Remastered 2005)’ the one with the 1996 London cast, it’s just my favourite album of it because of the song arrangement
Hadestown - original Broadway cast recording (I feel like ppl don’t rlly listen to the concept album anymore bc it’s just so wildly different from how the actual show music ended up sounding, I do actually quite like it but the musical ver is better in my opinion)
Les Mis - holy shit there’s a lot of albums for this one, tbh I’m not thinking of a specific one but maybe the 2010 London recording - the live one(?) I just quite like it but tbh I listen to a diff album each time I swear 😭
Phantom of the Opera - the original 1986 London cast one bc I just prefer it to the movie

oneshot for being on a train and falling asleep on robin’s shoulder? and she tries her best to stay still so she doesn’t have to wake you, and when she finally does because it’s your stop she apologises again and again, promising you can sleep when you get home :))
sleeping beauty | r.b.
robin buckley x gn!reader
summary: see request^
warnings: none? robin is a little bit insecure of her rambling. fluff.
a/n: was intending this to just be a lil drabble but i got a bit carried away. anyway robin would definitely be a bowie fan. loved this concept and can’t wait to write more robin. hope u like it!
Tumblr media
it has been a really long day.
and it isn’t until you settle down onto the uncomfortable train seat that you begin to feel the dull ache in your bones and the heavy weight of your eyelids. luckily, it’s only a short journey back into hawkins and robin still seemed animated and talkative enough to keep you distracted from your tiredness until you were back home in the safety of your bed.
currently she’s explaining with great enthusiasm why ‘hunky dory’ is bowie’s best album, the words tumbling from her mouth almost faster than your exhausted mind can keep up with.
“i just don’t see how you can start an album with the masterpiece that is ‘changes’ and that not be considered the best album!” she is talking just slightly too loud; each word is spoken as though punctuated with an exclamation point. her energy raising her voice to ensure she gets her point across.
“not only that!” she continues, turning in her seat to point at you dramatically, face alight with a grin. “it’s followed by ‘oh! you pretty things.’ that’s literally one of my favourite songs ever. i mean… come on!”
something warm and giddy bubbles up inside you at how endearing her passion is and you can’t help the smile that instantly overtakes your features whenever she gets like this. somehow she manages to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of everything she likes and can talk fervently about each one for hours. you always love to indulge her, instead of shutting her down like most people seem to, because her excitement is always impossibly contagious.
“but ‘suffragette city,’ rob.” is all you respond, trying and failing to stifle a yawn, as you wiggle down in your seat to get more comfortable.
it’s not a lot of feedback but it’s all robin needs to be spurred into a rant, instantly arguing that ‘the rise and fall of ziggy stardust’ is too obvious. you roll your eyes, still smiling at her antics, and let your head fall back against the seat. you focus on the soft rasp in her voice, feeling comforted by the familiarity and just manage to make out a few more odd david bowie references before the sound is all blurring into one and your eyes fall shut. the gentle movement of the train guiding you into a deep sleep.
robin’s rambling is suddenly cut short when she feels a soft weight fall onto her shoulder. she freezes, hands still raised and mid sentence, her eyes going wide. stiff as a board, she spares a glance down at you, unsure whether she’d be relieved or terrified to see you still be awake. she let’s out the breath she was holding in when she sees your eyes closed, head comfortably resting against her shoulder. heat rises in her cheeks.
lowering her hands slowly, she takes in your appearance. the relaxed peacefulness of your sleeping features; lashes resting against your cheek and mouth slightly ajar. butterflies invading her stomach as she gazes just a little too long at your lips. she observes the slow rise and fall of your chest and shoulders, the pieces of hair that have fallen into your face. settling back into the seat, careful not to wake you, she wonders if you’ll dream and what you’ll dream of.
suddenly, robin cringes, realising her boring rambling may have been what knocked you out. she knew had a tendency to chatter people into boredom or annoyance; never being able to slow her brain down enough to read peoples reactions, and hated the thought that she had done that to you. or maybe you didn’t even want to go to sleep, maybe you’ll be annoyed that she didn’t wake you, maybe she should wake you.
her thoughts begin to spiral, suddenly second-guessing every decision she’s ever made and internally panicking. however, all her worry melts away when she hears a soft sigh leave your lips and looks down to see you pushing yourself into her side further, slotting your shoulders together. she can’t fight the smile that befalls her. how could she possibly wake you when she has you, so soft and beautiful, against her. just for a while she’ll pretend this is the gentle domesticity of a relationship and selfishly revel in your closeness until the end of the journey pulls you apart.
robin spends the next 20 minutes back into hawkins with her entire body stiff, trying desperately to stay as still as humanly possible so as not to wake you. each shift in the ride and bump on the tracks has her glancing down in panic that the train dares to disturb your slumber. you’re ‘sleeping beauty’ she thinks for a brief, sweet moment before shaking the thought away. her knitted fingers twist in her lap as she fights her usual urge to fidget and fuss after being still for too long. each minute, she fends off more and more tender thoughts about you, berating herself for being so smitten for someone seemingly uninterested.
there’s a mixture of relief and disappointment that washes over her as the conductor announces the next stop: hawkins. she hesitates momentarily, considering the best way to wake you before shifting awkwardly in her seat to face you better. cautiously, raising a hand, she softly jostles your shoulder, muttering your name in a soft whisper. you wriggle but don’t quite wake. instead, her hand moves to your face, tenderly gripping your cheek as she speaks your name more clearly.
you gasp a sharp intake of breath and your eyes blink open. you’re slightly disoriented as you awaken, the material of the train seat and stiffness of your spine feeling unfamiliar. but, what surprises you most, is the feeling of a cool hand resting against your cheek. tilting your head upwards, you lock eyes with robin’s concerned ocean blue gaze. heat floods your features at the closeness of your faces, eyes automatically dancing down to glance at her lips before catching yourself and locking eyes with her once more. the air is thick between your both for several long, tense seconds before robin swallows harshly and pulls herself away.
still slightly disoriented, you quickly shuffle to be sitting up in your chair again, waiting for your heart to stop hammering in your chest. for a moment you wonder if you’re still sleeping and simply dreamed that heated moment between you both until robin begins to speak and confirms it to be reality.
“we’re getting off in a minute.” she says, not quite meeting your eyes. “i’m really sorry for waking you.”
you rub your tired eyes. “it’s fine, sorry for falling asleep on you.”
both your words are timid, and sit awkwardly in the aftermath of your tense interaction.
“you must have been tired. sorry if i bored you, i can do that. i also feel really bad for having to wake you up. i’m really sorry. super sorry.” robin begins to ramble as usual and a little bit or normality is returned to the situation.
you know how to respond to this, this is familiar. not whatever happened before.
“honestly robin, it’s fine.” you smile at her with reassurance. “please stop apologising.”
your tone is exasperated and a laugh is shared between you as she opens her mouth to apologise once more and you have to rush to silence her. it feels like you can make eye contact comfortably again, but something has still changed in the way she’s looking at you.
“okay, okay.” she holds her hands up in surrender. “how was your sleep?”
you blush thinking about just how well you slept and wonder if you should be chalking it down to robins presence. the comforting warmth of her body next to yours and familiar fresh scent of her clothes made thirty minutes feel like a deep, full nights rest.
“really good actually,” you reply slightly sheepishly.
the train begins to slow to a stop and you both stand to begin collecting your things. robin turns her back to you to slide on her jacket and a burst of confidence spurs through you.
“i should fall asleep on you more often”
your tone is jokey but she senses intention behind it and freezes whilst pulling her sleeve on. you hold your breath, ready to gage her reaction. a beat of silence passes before an awkward forced laugh fall from her lips. she turns to face you again, finally finished putting in her jacket. the pink tinge to her cheeks and the way her head is bashfully downturned makes your grin widen. please flirt back, the voice in your head begs.
“oh yeah?” she asks, her voice lilting in a teasing way and a slight shiver dancing in your spine. “yeah. you should.”
it’s spoken like a promise, which you both intend to uphold.

because my ever after (2011) list helped me find the marianas trench corner of tumblr and i want to celebrate being among my people and also because i simply cannot resist the allure of this format as one ideal for expressing my appreciation for music on which my brain likes to chew,
a non-exhaustive list of things i love about masterpiece theatre (2009):
- themes!!!! this album’s exploration of performance vs authenticity is its beating heart and like, i’ve gotten the sense that it’s the work that really carved the band’s name into the tree trunk of canada’s popular music scene - nevermore to leave there (heyooo) - which makes the bitterness that runs through the album’s veins so so potent. this album is biting me biting me biting me and i never want it to stop
- how the title functions as a mission statement. one of the identifying characteristics of the band’s work following this album, and arguably* including this album, is that it’s serving at least forty percent theatre at all times
“masterpiece theatre i”
- first of all, the fact that this album includes a piece that has three separate movements (and the way this makes ‘symphonic rock’ the objectively correct way to sort marianas trench into a genre thank you very much)
- the tune-up is such a nice touch, why lie? yes kings, i am on the edge of my velvety seat, i am at the theatre!!
- please note that when i mentioned captivating prologues being a hallmark of the band’s work, i was thinking of “masterpiece theatre i” as the next best example to “ever after”
Tumblr media
like, a thesis statement for an album what could be better?? the performer (i am consciously separating the art from the artist, josh ramsay et. al., but i am also kissing you directly on the mouth) feels the curse of the performance as much as he can’t live without it.
- the line every word is calculated because the closer i look, the more i see the loving care with which every creative choice in the band’s discography was made so like. say👏 that👏
- the soft plosiveness of this is just a part i portray and how it makes the refrain really fun to sing along to, as well as all the more powerful as the performer’s greatest plea to his audience, that they recognize the divide between authentic self and performance
“all to myself”
- the punch to the face that is the transition from “masterpiece theatre i” to this song
- how it belongs among the ranks of the band’s most danceable numbers, i never can sit still listening to this one
- i’m half asleep, and i am wide awake because, yeah. constantly, forever.
- ostensibly, the way it’s about a romantic relationship, but like.
Tumblr media
you can just as easily read the chorus in the context of the performer speaking to his audience. the push of “isn’t the very act of creating art asking for attention, we’re only giving you what you want”, the pull of “if i’m constantly performing for you, when does the mask end and my truest self begin?” we - audience - are literally making the performer feel like someone else.
- this isn’t what i wanted but / i can’t keep my filthy fuckin’ mouth shut firstly because it fucks!!! but also because of how it fits into the album’s larger theme. fame isn’t what the performer wanted, but quite literally he’s not keeping his fucking mouth shut! he is in the act of making music for us! biting me biting me biting me
- chorus variation to round out a song, my beloved
Tumblr media
“cross my heart”
- the way this song bewitches me into doing some bastardization of the hand jive every freaking time
- however you would describe these three bad bitches and their contributions to the structure of the song
Tumblr media
- just the whiny, slutty energy of this one in general and how well the little bursts of guitar string feedback build up this feeling throughout the number
- the way and i do want to show you, i / will run to you, to you, til i / can’t stand on my own anymore sets the stage (theatre!!) for the speaker/performer/narrator’s pervasive attitude toward relationships and how he’s constantly swept up in the capital R-Romance of this conception of love while simultaneously having to unlearn it for the sake of his beloved, album in and album out
- how the clapping and then the music phases back in during the bridge
“beside you”
- y’all ever croon?
- this is not going to be accessible to anyone else but it’s my list so. the lyric when it’s in your spine like you’ve walked for miles because so much of my logged marianas trench time has taken place while i’m working, moving between my silly lil dog walks and i’m literally walking for miles and do occasionally very much feel it in my spine
- the words you want are out of reach, but they’ve never been so loud for the way it captures something so small and yet so profoundly true about being a person
“acadia”
- nostalgia!!! and how this song is the album’s first attempt to unpack the authentic self in the performance vs authenticity dynamic. is who i was when my childhood home was my one and only home my one and truest self?
- just like. the way i wonder about the names dropped and how my curiosity necessarily plays into the album’s theme. if they’re real people the performer knows, then he’s shilling out something intimate in an attempt to heighten his art - though, to be fair, he’s doing it in a way that’s not completely accessible to us, there’s only so much to a name itself - but if the names are completely made up, then the performer is merely playing at authenticity to bait us into reading intimacy in his art. and doesn’t that make your brain want to eat itself?? biting me biTING ME BITING ME
- god, the way this song is so well-accomplished at bottling nostalgia because like every memory comes on / when i hear that old song / that we used to sing / with the words all wrong immediately evokes thousands of moments that have tied me back to my childhood. this song really said ‘the power of music!!’ and then repeatedly knocked me on my ass with the truth of that screaming crying throwing up etc.
- not to keep harping on this, i know you guys get it, but like, the way ran out of gas on the highway / we walked there, and i gave / drunken speeches / on sobriety makes me feel like i’m part of this anecdote! i’m there, recalling that stupid speech alongside the performer. stop pulling me so close if you don’t want more kisses directly on the mouth!!!
“masterpiece theatre ii”
- the way the first verse reads as a direct response to “acadia”
Tumblr media
after giving us so much of himself, the performer’s inclination is now to draw back
- the way the whole movement feels almost bashful compared to its powerhouse counterparts because more than the other two, “masterpiece theatre ii” is about the performer considering his performance from the audience’s perspective, about his understanding that he’s beckoned us closer but, regrettably, still can’t bring us all the way inside for how that’d destroy him.
- the refrain i’ll burn out and slip away posing the questions to the audience: can we forgive the performer when, eventually, he no longer has more art to offer us? can we turn around and recognize his humanity like he’s acknowledging ours?
“sing sing”
- how the brash opener - can i have your attention? - reads particularly cheeky coming off “masterpiece theatre ii”, where the performer just cautioned us that too much of our attention causes him to slip further and further away, and sets the bratty tone of the whole number perfectly, perfectly
- nothing captures the performer’s feelings about his relationship with his audience as succinctly as the “sing sing” chorus
Tumblr media
this is destroying his health, but he still wishes that he were an endless well for us, full of freshness and vitality and all that we need
- just, obsessed with hear the sad little sounds as they fall from my mouth because i DO i AM
- the way the song’s brattiness comes out especially in the bridge. i’m partial to the whininess of gets very hard to drink to my continued success because like, boo hoo. i can’t toast to how popular i am :( it comes at the cost of being adored by you :(
- don’t you ever tell me i’m not loving you best because i WOULDN’T you DO
“good to you”
- GOD but the way they literally invited an audience member (i.e. a fan) to join the performance?? the way that heightens the tenderness this song has for the performer-audience relationship, even as both parties are actively getting a lil messed up by it?? gonna just drape myself on a fainting couch for a minute
- the way the chorus reinforces this read, especially when the performer and the audience sing it as one
Tumblr media
hello????
- the way looking at the song through this lens literally just reframed the lyrics i thought i saw a sign / somewhere between the lines for me. here we are, experiencing recognition of the self in the performer’s art and thereby forging an intimacy he has no access to. AHHH!
- so yeah, every love song on this album is actually about the complex love between performer and audience. we are the object of our favorite band’s affection!! we are corrupting each other with our codependency!! ain’t love grand?
“celebrity status”
- they didn’t have to make our return to bitterness for the way performance muddles identity so sexy, but they did and they did it for me, to make sure this album never stops BITING ME
- the PANTING and how evocative it is and, like, yeah, you got me josh ramsay et. al. put me in horny jail, i am once again fuckstruck by your music. but you’re the ones who made it this way so do not pass go, do not collect two-hundred dollars
- the lyrics trading in who i’ve been for shiny celebrity skin / i like to push it and push it until my luck is over because once more with the succinctness of this album’s theme but also because it builds on the drunken speeches on sobriety moment in acadia by making me feel like i know the performer being invited as i am to share a wry laugh over how Much he is at any given moment
- the way i wonder why, why, wonder why, why i oughta / let you wreck, resurrect whatever you wanna tastes
- for all the sexy sardonic tone of this number, there’s a beautiful little ray of hope in the line there’s a piece of me they’re throwing back at us if only for the way it builds on fix me (2006)‘s refrain of the speaker losing bits of himself (see: “say anything”, “september”) by implying that the performance, despite the sea of inauthenticity he sometimes finds himself drowning in, offers the performer the chance to know himself better. it’s a refracted image because of the audience, but he does get to experience recognition of the self in his art, too.
- the way hope also lives in the i’m trying refrain. overwhelmed and cynical about the odds, the performer is still putting forth the effort to be authentic, still putting forth the effort to create art. you gotta keep running up that hill, bitch!
“perfect”
- the seamless fade of “celebrity status” into this song
- if the point’s to never disappoint you / somebody’s got to tell me what to do because it’s very real and it makes me want to pull my hair out in chunks!!!
- i love how pointed the inclusion of this bit
Tumblr media
feels because, on one level, “perfect” is about cultivating your image and your art until it’s as appealing as it could possibly be to the masses, and so borrowing a line from the far less polished and palatable (affectionate) “sicker things” builds on that in a delicious way
“lover dearest”
- first of all, shoutout to their ‘live from inside’ concert for unlocking the power of this number for me and, like, i am once again unwittingly roped into active participation in this album’s theme but!! can we grapple for a sec with how watching a performance - seeing the performer laid raw, specifically - is what woke me up to the emotional core of this number?? 😬
- so. you know how some words can be used often enough in a sexy enough context that you can’t help your pavlovian response to them? they lowkey get you hot no matter how they’re brought up? josh ramsay et. al. are responsible for making ‘taste’ one of these words for me (this time that we waste, but i still love your taste)
- the way i’ll just try to hide it, or i could slip into you / it’s so easy to come back into you builds on the “masterpiece theatre i” refrain of you’re beautiful / can i hide in you awhile? and how in general this song really shines a light on the codependent nature of the performer-audience relationship. the fact that this song is also about struggle with addition is like - woof - the performer traded his old vice for the thrill of the performance and amassing an audience and have i mentioned lately? BITING ME BITING ME BITING ME.
- the leave me wail. reblog, you agree.
- how the bitter in you and the quitter in me / is bitter in you and the quitter in me being reminiscent of the “shake tramp” bridge makes my brain go brrrr
“masterpiece theatre iii”
- the way the tinkling xylophone (??) intro automatically brings the drama. i am once again on the edge of my velvety seat!!
- the i’ll wreck this if i have to / tell me what good would that do / i’ll wreck this if i have to refrain being followed-up by a creeping couple bars of i’d be so good to you and how it’s a call and response between the performer and his audience. consenting to the wreckage of the masterpiece is how we, the audience, can be good to the performer. it’s how we could show our most unselfish love.
- how weaving “celebrity status” into “cross my heart” continues to highlight the album’s interest in the act of creating art being essential to the performer’s personhood while the audience’s act of consuming the artist alongside the art turns around and cheapens the performer’s identity all in the same breath
Tumblr media
- and then also how the outro makes explicit the connection between “lover dearest” and “masterpiece theatre i”
Tumblr media
and the way it all adds up to acknowledge the codependence without resolving it??
- and then these motherfuckers have the audacity to sprinkle on a dash of “say anything” (that’s the thing i’m sensitive about!!!!!!)?? the way i never took you for a trick but sometimes i don’t know what you want serves as the performer’s last acknowledgement that he needs to hold the audience at arm’s length because our want for his art is so monumental that it threatens to overshadow him???? the way i could take it if you need to take this out on someone beckons us closer one last time, invites us to use the art as a mirror????????? UNFAIR, I AM GNASHING MY TEETH
*in conclusion: all these songs being in conversation with one another gives the album a really satisfying cohesion and sets up what’s to come in the band’s later works, though it ironically lacks the rising and falling action that’d convince me to count it among the more theatrical pieces in their discography. it’s my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good time boy, and either my second or third favorite marianas trench album, depending on what day you ask me.

Dollar Bin #9:
World Party's Goodbye Jumbo
Tumblr media
In the Spring of 1990 I became momentary friends with the edgy older dude next door.
I was 14 and in 8th grade, emerging from a month of missed school due to an epic case of poison oak followed by an even more epic bout with the chicken pox. I looked like the Elephant Man, one eye blistered entirely shut. Edgy Older Dude was in his mid-twenties and was definitely on drugs.
How do I know he was on drugs, you ask? Don't worry, I still know little to nothing about drugs. But a year after our moment of friendship Edgy Guy moved out and my dad, who owned the guy's apartment, sent me over to clean out his kitchen. In the frig I found, swear to God, at least 7 open bottles of identical BBQ sauce. Now my frig today can get a bit chaotic; sometimes I discover we're working on two competing jars of mayo simultaneously. But only a 20-something white dude on drugs is capable of racking up 7+ squirt jars of Kraft's Slow Simmered Original.
Anyway, this guy and I conducted our friendship entirely through his bedroom window. You see, at that point in 8th grade I was searching for The Answer. So were you. A calendar year earlier I Won't Back Down had fundamentally changed my life. Tom Petty's full moon masterpiece disinterested me in baseball cards and comic books forever and set me firmly on the path that led straight to the Dollar Bin.
Petty led me to the Wilburys; the Wilburys led me to the Beatles; the Beatles led me to insist on getting a pair of Lennon's circular granny frames at the optometrist. But then I hit a roadblock. MTV was all Aerosmith and Janet Jackson and I never could work up the energy to try and understand Janie's Got a Gun or what had happened in 1814. So what was next? My 8th grade self had no idea.
Then World Party's Put the Message in the Box glided out the window next door: a warm, earnest cloud of harmony and comfort set to a white guy beat.
And if you listen now, you might hear, a new sound coming in, as an old one disappears...
Him: "Hey kid, what's up?"
(It was a reasonable question. I was standing directly outside his bedroom window, staring in, transfixed.)
Me: "Oh, hey. Sorry. I like that song, sir."
Him: "Yeah. Just came out. World Party. Totally sweet."
Me: "Wow. Yeah. I like the Beatles."
Him: "Right on kid. Want me to tape this for you?"
Me: "Wow. Yeah. Like, totally."
A day later the guy's arm stuck out the window and passed me a Maxell tape (remember the guy sitting in profile in his armchair, getting blown away by the audio quality one experienced from a Maxell tape?) of World Party's Goodbye Jumbo, an album I will now argue belongs in the pantheon of still extremely worthwhile 80's White Guy Rock.
Ah, the category known as Worthwhile 80's White Guy Rock. Stephen Stills appears in it not. Little did you know that what started with Armed Forces and found prestige pinnacles with The Joshua Tree, Disintegration, Graceland, So and Synchronicity, and classic oddball variations with Shooting Rubber Bands at the Stars and Petty, Dylan and Co's various resuscitations, all finds its righteous conclusion in Goodbye Jumbo, Karl Wallinger's fantastic double to The White Album.
Of course Goodbye Jumbo remains a very minor record in comparison to the others I mention above. If there's a signature sound from the album left in the memory of anyone other than me it's likely the brief, squirming riff that opens the first single, Way Down Now. Wallingher squeezes his guitar like a full tube of toothpaste, spiraling out a strangled surge of joy. Take a listen.
youtube
At the close of the 80's my father seemed like the person least likely to help me on my quest to find awesome popular music. My siblings and I grew up without a working stereo in the house and when I insisted we listen to Running Down a Dream in the car the only vaguely relevant comment my mercurial and forever overworked dad could summon up was that I should really listen to Toad, Cream's 8 minute drum solo song from Wheels of Fire. Somehow that track, and that track alone, had lodged in his memory. Was his recommendation earnest or mischievous? Definitely both. That's my dad.
Anyway, my father's sole moment of brilliance when it comes to talking to me about music in the last 35 years came when he first overheard me listening to Way Down Now. As the song began to climax and soar he stepped over the Millennium Falcon that still cluttered up my bedroom floor and started singing along!
Woo-Woo! Woo-Woo!
Somewhere in his brain, otherwise crammed with Reganomics, house paint color wheels and bidding estimates, there was still room left for Toad and the background vocal line from Sympathy for the Devil.
"Your band is stealing from the Stones, son," he said as the song ended. Then he wandered off, continuing to sing it, without further explanation, leaving me totally flummoxed: who were "the Stones" and what did they have to do with the fantastic music coming from the homemade tape I had on repeat? Furthermore, did my father have a secret life?
I once again sought out the dude next door, standing at his window, oblivious to all social mores, until he reappeared.
"What's up kid? Like the tape?"
"Oh yes, sir. But my dad says they're stealing from the Stones."
"The Rolling Stones? Damn, he's right. Sympathy for the Devil. They're stealing from everyone. It's genius. The fifth track is my favorite. Pure Prince."
At that point I was even more confused. I knew about The Rolling Stones. My friends Matt and Eric, who had cool dads, had gone to see Keith and Mick at the LA Colosseum the year before; Guns and Roses, whose fold-out naked lady tape cover for Lies scared the living crap out of me, had opened for them. But how could a band copy the senior citizens behind Mixed Emotions and the Bat Dance guy at the same time?
I went, like a good little boy, and listened to my tape again, counting down to the fifth track, Ain't Gonna Come Till I'm Ready, and I instantly discovered it was the only song I couldn't stand on the album. Maybe Neighbor Dude and I were not destined to be best friends after all. World Party sang like a girl in that song! The word "falsetto" was definitely not in my vocabulary and it would take another year or so before I heard Crazy Love and began to understand white people soul music.
Another word that was not in my vocabulary was "genre", but my self-education took a step forward when I realized that every song on Goodbye Jumbo had a different mood, a different sound.
Listen to the album today and all this stuff is obvious. The album opens with a handmade gesture; Is It Too Late? is Eno sitting in on the Let It Be sessions, with Wallinger turning on an amateur drum machine and then asking an engineer to start recording even though, obviously, he's already rolling. Does this band know what they are doing, we wonder? Of course they do; by the middle of the track things are on fire.
youtube
Every song that follows after in Goodbye Jumbo unfurls its own unique sonic banner. Check out the clouded rainbow dream pop of When the Dream Comes, or the Plastic Ono beautiful death march of God On My Side, or the Dylan/Simon breakfast cereal mashup on Take It Up.
In the decade that followed, Yo La Tengo took Goodbye Jumbo's mixtape, honor-thy-many-masters, approach and perfected it. They rocked; they crooned; they raged; they droned. But Ira, Georgia and James were three (ridiculously talented) people. Wallinger built Goodbye Jumbo alone. That's right; don't be fooled by the full band, cheesy music videos: like the aforementioned Plastic Ono Band, World Party was basically just one guy playing every instrument.
The lyrics on the record are tough for me to measure with any real objectivity. Love Street and Put the Message in the Box sounded to me, at age 14, like sister tracks to Let it Be and Imagine. Wallinger isn't humble on this record; he's out to change the world with a way early environmentalist focus and all kinds of Pleas For Understanding that probably sound pretentious to modern ears. But I still hear those songs like I'm back in Algebra 1, teaching myself how to draw peace signs.
By one measure Goodbye Jumbo is the last record I own that should be considered for the Dollar Bin. Last Spring, after 30 years of looking, I found a pristine vinyl copy and bought it for $40, making it the most expensive individual record I've ever bought. Vinyl records were barely made between 89 and the 00's, so records from that era are always priced at a steep premium.
But don't lose faith in me because of that sticker price, my fellow Dollar Bin Dwellers: I guarantee that you can pick up a CD copy of Goodbye Jumbo for a buck without too much hard looking, and, who am I kidding, all this stuff is available on Spotify anyway.
So I'm putting this message in the box and I'm sending it around the world in a car: Goodbye Jumbo is the late 80's Dollar Bin treasure.

It's weird how we don't allow artists to change or evolve we always expect them to have the same style and same personality forever. But change is life and often if not people fear what they are not use to. So an abrupt transformation shatters the image of what we had of people in our minds. We collectively have an idea about a person when they establish something prominent but anytime they want to branch out the fans think it's a personal attack against them. But it's like if you can't accept the fact that nothing stays the same forever then you seriously need to find something new that'll actually fulfill your needs instead of trying to revert someone back into a stage where there is nothing left to embark on. People are allowed to grow and adapt because it's part of character building. If you never self reflect and always stay in a place that makes you stagnant you will always find yourself in a personal hell of your own making. Nothing will change for you because you don't change with it.
You need to let some things go and move on in order to actually enjoy things because life is always moving. And time can only hold things so dear til the next thing comes along.
You need to think like a catipillar transforming into a butterfly if it always stayed a catipillar it wouldn't know how to fly. Change is growth. That's what Melanie fans don't understand. Melanie is not gonna bend over backwards for you anymore because the more she realizes her worth the less she'll want to appease you and the more she'll expand beyond what once because she won't be stuck in a place that makes her miserable if it means doing the next best thing. If she always stayed in the place that made her hate herself she wouldn't know what her worth is. And she would always be chasing validation from others that don't give two shits about her. Im happy for her because she's seems more content with herself now ever since she created portals. Her new aesthetic is everything!!! I don't understand why you guys can't appreciate what she's offered because she could stop making content all together. Every song on that album is a fucking masterpiece. I think I might like it even more the K-12 tbh. Some people really don't know what they have until it disappears right in front of their eyes. This might be the last time we ever see Melanie and you keep chasing her away. It seems no matter how hard she's worked or how sweet and caring Melanie is it isn't enough for all of you. You always want more. Just be happy with what you fucking got and shut up. Melanie dear I love you and you will always have a special place in my heart.

We Told You This Was Melodrama
so Melodrama is 6. what a timeless album it has been. i find myself come back to Melodrama regardless of what was going on in my life the last 6 years. as it should be.
and listening to Melodrama almost exclusively after my first heartbreak. for 3 whole months. i lived and breathed Melodrama so much that it had to be one of the first few tattoos on me.
(if i accidentally passed in a natural disaster in another country, at least they have the Melodrama tattoo to identify me)
the Melodrama era was so fucking magical. the tour. the songs. the lights. the concert confetti. the outfits. the interviews. the social media engagement. the music videos. the photoshoot. god the fucking pictures and fucking photoshoots. (LOL the one where lorde's above water and looking directly into the camera - currently my icon on outlook. STILL. i changed it back in 2017 probably. and it was my main tumblr's avatar for a while. and glamourtraumamelodrama was my main tumblr's url for a while)
and to Melodrama i danced and i sang and i yelled and i cried and i bawled and i choked and i froze and i felt like i was on top of the world and i grieved and i accepted things and i ran and i sat alone and smoked so many cigarettes to it on so many nights and i drove down so many streets and highways and i sang on top of my lungs when i was in love and i loved it enough to get a tattoo of.
at various points of my life the last 6 years, i've never shut up about Melodrama and it was the one thing people knew about me. as it should be. Melodrama deserves all the hype it deserves.
a masterpiece isn't even good enough to describe Melodrama. neither is a cultural phenomenon. it's obviously more than that. and of course it means different things for every one. and for me - it's a tribute to my late adolescence, a sense-making navigation guide of my early/mid/late 20s, and everything in between. i was in love. i was in many foreign places. i got my heart broken (again and again). i made friends. i lost friends. i was in so many depressive episodes. amidst everything that changes so quickly, Melodrama was, and still is, the one companion that feels like home. i guess when you get your heart broken again and again, at least you feel less alone when you have a companion while you put yourself back together. again and again. you're not a liability. whoever makes you feel so is welcome to fuck off and die. as they should be.
Melodrama is still as magical as the first time i listened to it. regardless of whether i'm leaving it in the background, or really listened to it. well, listening to Melodrama at an older age feels more magical because i've got more life experiences to project and feel. but you get what i mean. i'm not skilled enough with my words and thought processes to talk about the production and the words. it just feels so... well-thought.
there will never be another album like Melodrama, and i'm okay with that. it is experimental enough yet there is some form of consistency that ties every track together. you could play the album on loop, listen to it from start to end, and let it start again. it still flows. both the grandeur and stripped-down production has its place, and lets you feel what you need to feel.
close your eyes and feel everything. it's a trip you take down your brain and at the end of the lane there is catharsis.
what a time to be alive at the same time Melodrama exists. (thank you Lorde) it makes all the other sufferings a little more bearable. and i guess that's enough for me for now. i might change my mind but whatfuckingever. i change my mind all the time anyway.
what a fucking time to be alive. to have an album of my generation that i could call my own in my 20s. that would be talked about for decades to come. an icon that i have to hold on to as i get older (assuming i live till then.)
all i wish for is that i could take some molly and listen to Melodrama while i'm on it. like Lorde did when she made this album. as it should be.
one can dream
i guess. through it all. in life there's only 3 things that matter:
the glamour
the trauma
the melodrama
Melodrama Forever xx

Harms Way's "Common Suffering" is more than just an experimentation. It's a powerful, hardcore-fueled, and emotionally electrifying album with a hidden message left to be deciphered by its listener. Whomever seeks to find the conventional approach to what they've done in the past could be easily disillusioned with this one, but if you dig deeper, you may find a masterpiece. It asks the listener:
"Do you know what real suffering feels like?"
This album suggests a deep exploration of the five stages of grief:
Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance.
But what is most fascinating is that, it is much more closer to the true expression of how these stages are experienced in humanity. It is not cohesive, but rather confused and abstract. It speaks about a heart finding out that it has been betrayed. The realization that the truth we believed and trusted is no longer there, and so the journey of transcendence begins. The hurt ego begins with trying to maintain itself afloat with - - "Degrade, we're born to decay" - "Decline, they will let you down" - As the feelings and thoughts begin to affect our consciousness by circulating into a downward spiral, it then speaks with - - "I am in denial, I will never be free again" - "I have no sense of self" - "I can't forgive me, another victim in denial" - but the sword of deceit has already been plunged into the heart, perforating deeply - so deeply, it emerges all the way to the back. The sharpness of the pain, the burning sensation felt all over the body, and the mind finds itself in a state of shock. The blood pours out from the mouth and circulates all the way up into the brain. We suddenly become blinded by rage.
The anger. The endless anger. - "I can't live this way, live your way. I can't love like you do." - "Commitment, Illusion, you can't console" - "A selfish force, so cruel, a destructive scheme" - "You take my soul from me and I feel betrayed" - "A broken promise, the hate infests" - "You feel your life erode, it's all for nothing" - "I watched you betray me, I want you to fear me" - "Before they terrorize you, watch them bleed in front of you" -
It is anger sinking you deeper into the abyss, seeking for the ultimate destruction of the lie you lived. It is wanting to skin yourself alive to erode every false touch, hope, and empty promise given to you. Desolation, and despair. Feeling so many violent currents, you no longer can decipher what is real. Worthlessness.
Bargaining with faith, asking the question: Is this really my destiny? Am I still a man or have I become an empty shell? - "(Help me)" - "I remember (When will it end?)" - "Devour me" - "Why do we exist?" -
Only to find the door slammed shut, locked deep inside memories that can no longer be experienced nor lived in no matter how hard we try to pry it open, leading us straight into the meaningless of our existence - The Void. Depression, forcing us to meet face to face with the ultimate darkness, our shadow selves. The endless monologues, paranoia, neurosis - the inability to feel anything but pure emptiness: - "Fade away" - "Looking for seclusion" - "I forever am alone (dying inside)" - "Cornered alone, wounded and vulnerable" - "The years await, to fill the void" - "It's all for nothing, erase my future" - "I lay still, tomorrow I dread" - "The nervous system stalls, you cripple and start to fall" - "I blame myself and I corrode, and I surround myself with what I loathe" - "A sad delusion, I confess" - "I faced God, I was turned inside, It's back to hell, and I'm here to stay" -
The process of isolation. Not having the emotional currency needed to see hope. The endless shades of grey. The endless grief, corrupted by loneliness. Numbness. The "Cyanide" poisoning the heart, obliterating every feeling of hope. Using the last remaining dose of courage to grab the sword by the blade to remove it once and for all, for the suffering has been too great to continue tolerating - the endless bleeding, the ultimate sacrifice of love. Years go by and the wound ceases to bleed, yet it remains open. It then makes us question: Do we choose to remain or do we choose to cease? "The affection I feel, impaired. Relations turn to despair. As I cower to my knees, they empower" - "Never let them take control" - "I will always seek power" - And through the solitude, isolation, we begin to understand the nuances of the betrayal and it's meaning. We begin to understand that this pain and suffering, is a new source of power being gifted to us. Through the path of hell, we meet our creator - ourselves, and by looking at it straight into the eyes of the abyss, we begin to accept our fate. We become acquainted with expansion in our consciousness through our common suffering. We accept our anger and the injustice made onto us: - "And I looked into the eyes of a demon and I saw myself" - "The calm sets in, at peace this time" - "I'm free at last" - "The darkest past, no longer see beneath the surface" - "Sink to peace" - It then culminates with a song called "Wanderer": - "To wander beyond the sunset To sail above the seabed To wander behind the sand glass To reach the past of me
As I'm wandering, I'll be searching through - " The search for a new meaning. A new sense of self. A life beyond deception and hatredness. The search for the new truth.
As mentioned at the beginning, these messages are found scattered throughout the story-line, which brings a lot of confusing thoughts to what exactly is the message that is being conveyed. But that is the beauty of grief - the imbalance of emotions and thoughts, the constant ups and downs, the health within sickness - we can all experience these torments in just a day. The combination of this lyrics, alongside the heaviness and the metallic abstraction of the sounds, brings out feelings rooted within the subconscious that feel foreign, and almost terrifying. It invites the listener to open up their heart and feel the fear. I couldn't bear to listen to this album after the first time I did - for it triggered feelings I didn't wish to re-live again. But I took the plunge and allowed myself to go alongside the journey of pain - a journey that by now, I know very well. I came to understand that I am not completely alone in this world - someone out there experienced the same feelings I have experienced, and meticulously put into words the things I have always wished to express but never could. This band already had an immense sentimental value to me - it reminds me of a life I thought I would live forever. But as I went through it's journey, in the end - all I truly found was hope and acceptance.
Acceptance of what is long gone and no longer will be. Acceptance that I am also the wanderer, searching through - for the truth.
The ultimate truth that can only be found through common suffering.
The light at the end of the tunnel.

Albums I’ve Gone and Done Listened to This 1st Week of Feb-a-rarry
Plug - Drum and Bass for Papa (1996)
Tumblr media
Is there any more drum and bass that takes samples from old B-movies and old B-movie scores (or at least sounds like it does)? I feel like this album tapped into a niche that hasn’t had enough tapping into done to it. If you’re reading this, please direct me to more of that if you have it.
On a similar note, jazzstep is a thing that doesn’t seem to be talked about as much either among d’n’b subgenres, and I swear to God, the fact that electro swing was the jazz/electronic-dance crossover that ended up thriving more than jazzstep should be all the evidence you need that there’s no true justice in this world.
The Jesus Lizard - Liar (1992)
Tumblr media
It’s tough for me to say if this album is any more or less good than Goat. @kanadiangeese and I agree that this band is one consistent bunch, and what a sublime fucking band to have that level of consistency. I do feel way more confident, however, saying that “Gladiator” might be at least in the top 3 standalone songs the Lizard ever made. At least.
God Is My Co-Pilot - Speed Yr Trip (1992)
Tumblr media
I must admit, music of this style made into this kind of structure isn’t the easiest thing to make memorable and tell-apart-able, even within a half-hour timespan. But this attempt is still way above average in that regard. Whacked out no wave? With John motherfucking Zorn and horny lesbians? I mean, I don’t consider this album an all-out masterpiece, but the music community should spend every night of their lives flagellating themselves for not having let this band go anywhere further than they have. I probably would never have heard anyone let out even a whisper about their existence if it weren’t for Zorn’s inclusion on this particular album. *sigh*
Kaya - Life•Is•Trivial (2018)
Tumblr media
I don’t know if you have a Tumblr, or what it is if you do, but to whoever recommended this on the Discord server I visit every now and again, thank you so much, this is wonderful, wonderful grind! (sorry for not remembering your name rn!)
The only real anecdote I really have to share about this particular album is that when I looked it up on RYM and saw that it had the descriptor “female vocals”, I kind of had the fullest revelation about how, well, dumb the “male/female/androgynous” thing really is over there. I mean, if there’s any genre that has absolutely proven how little of a difference the vocalist’s gender really makes in how they sound, it’s fucking grindcore. And seeing how this is a one-off project from 5 years ago with members that seem to have disclosed no information about themselves that at least I could find, I really struggle to see how whoever added that descriptor can be so sure whether the vocalist is a girl. Fuck outta here with that. I’m not here to identify myself to you, I’m here to grind your sorry ass to Hank Hill levels of flatness, now sit there and take it, motherfucker!
Immortal - Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism (1992)
Tumblr media
The music video for “Call of the Wintermoon” is kind of all that was needed to cement this band’s place in the top 3 of black metal for me. The shit everyone around them was doing was ridiculous enough, I’m so glad there was at least one group of fucking Tolkien ultra-nerds that just embraced that; instead of acting so high and mighty and trying to “prove” your “evilness” with cold-blooded murder and white supremacy, why don’t you just know your place, run around in your backyard with a wizard hat, write some bad-ass riffs and shut the hell up? Now get your butt to bed, Bjørn, you have school tomorrow!
Thomas Leer & Robert Rental - The Bridge (1979) (relisten)
Tumblr media
I guess it’s because the darker and more atmospheric moments stuck with me more the first time, but the comparisons I heard to later UK synthpop acts like Depeche Mode and the Human League kind of surprised me. The second time around, though, yeah, I can totally hear it. Maybe it’s a sign that I probably haven’t been respecting those types of acts over the years as much as I should, but I digress. If you want to hear what the genesis of the collective British effort to put more emphasis on the pop in synthpop could be, you could do a lot worse than finding this rather brooding, but still delightful collection of minimal melancholic melodies, of both the song-like and ambient varieties. Through Throbbing Gristle’s label, no less!
Some moments on the B-side are stronger than others, but “Six A. M.” in particular seems to trigger the same part of my brain as Autechre’s “Silverside”, and if I may put it directly, if you come anywhere close to activating those particular neurons in my brain, I want to kiss you with tongue.
Mulatu Astatke - Éthiopiques, Vol. 4: Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale (1969-1974)
Tumblr media
I discovered this guy through a vendor at one of the record stores I visit giving me another compilation of his, which was a bit more varied, but also a bit more hit-and-miss. This one’s way stronger on the “hit” side.
There’s cool jazz, as in “relaxing” cool, but this is cool jazz, as in “protagonist of a blaxploitation movie” cool, and that's just one of the many, many kinds of cool that this man's music radiates at once. Seriously, if I'm not compelling you to drop what you're doing and listen to this album right the fuck now, you don’t deserve this post.
Einstürzende Neubauten - Zeichnungen des Patienten O. T. (1983) (relisten)
Tumblr media
I would say that the first 3 Neubauten albums all have their own strengths and weaknesses where no single one invalidates the other. Kollaps is there if you want to listen to the most accurate answer to the question “What kind of album would someone make from the ruins of a city post-apocalypse?” Uncompromising experimentation that may leave you somewhat confused, but rarely bored and uninterested. Halber Mensch has the best all-out songs on it, with none of their utterly manic energy compromised, but it’s also the point where they started to leave the rawness of the production behind. Zeichnungen may be seen as a good in-between of the two, but as far as atmosphere is concerned, I’d say it beats the other two out. This album is the best at taking you on a journey, one of paralyzing paranoia and endless fire (seriously, the burning won’t stop). Sound like fun? Well, good, because it does not take much knowledge of German to let most of this come through to you. Believe me, I only know manchmal.
Anyway, yes. Atmosphere. While Kollaps excelled in its more loud and clattering moments, its slower and quieter moments are kind of so-so, whereas in Zeichnungen, they’re some of the better moments in the whole album... Oh, who am I kidding, the whole thing’s exceptional.
Seriously, to anyone going further into industrial that’s been told to listen to Halber Mensch, you’re being lead onto the right track for sure, but you’d be seriously missing out if you didn’t give the two before it a spin as well. The trio, in my opinion, serves to paint the complete picture, that illustrates why the Neubautens are not only one of the greats of industrial music, but maybe one of the most important bands of the last half a century. Long stürz the Neubauten ein!
Skullflower - Form Destroyer (1989)
Tumblr media
Whereas a lot of sludge metal feels like adding some of the qualities of early Swans’ industrial dirge rock into classic doomy heavy metal, this is kind of the other way around, where a bunch of underground industrial/power electronics musicians fused elements of classic metal (although, of the more psychedelic variety) into the dirge rock.
And... I mean, this does have its moments, don’t get me wrong, but all around, ugh... With all the praise I’ve seen this band get from people whose tastes seemed to align with mine, I’m really having a hard time truly getting into this as much as I hoped I would have.
On paper, they sound fucking awesome! Slow and heavy rock jams with feedback up the goddamn wazoo? Come to fuckin’ Razzy! Their visual style kicks ass too! Before I looked closer and found out that the cover above was just a negative of someone’s mouth, I thought it was some fucked up parasitic cell under a microscope or something!
But in reality, I feel their stuff may be a bit too monotonous for me. Either that, or the production may be a bit too hazy and lo-fi even for my fucking tastes. I’m not sure, but overall, I came out of this with my memory of most of it being fuzzier than the guitars they play, I’m afraid.
I’m not ready to dismiss Skullflower entirely. Maybe repeat listens might make them open up to me more, and even now, it’s not like I dislike this music. It’s just that as of now, they’ve proven to not quite be all they were hyped up to be.

Note
now i’m curious what ur top 5 of this year are 🤔🤔🤔🫡
hiii this ask is SO long omg tried to be succint but talking about things i like is so.... <3
shows
the bear - easily one of the best shows i've watched this year. episode 7 is a headrush
succession - technically season 3 was both new in general and to me. my sad little baby girl out from under logan's thumb and then spending 9 episodes desperately trying to get his siblings to respect him and realise all that he's suffered for them??? sooo eldest male daughter of him
industry - took me a while to get round to this. so juicy and dramatic and fast paced, and i loved not understanding any of the finance talk!
ugly betty - watched this for the first time as an adult at the beginning of the year and it's just so funny and fun and heartwarming i know it's an older show but i'm counting it
pachinko - tied between this and severance for what would make the top 5. this show is just such a masterpiece in storytelling and cinematography like just genuinely stunning and so moving
movies
i don't know if i've been that much of a film babe this year actually. i liked nope and the batman. i did watch cruel intentions for the first time this year and i liked it but that same weekend my laptop broke so it's a complicated situation
books
open water by caleb azumah nelson - i'm never going to shut up about this book! a Black british photographer meets a dancer one night in london and they become best friends and fall in love. both poetic in its prose, and unflinching in its reckoning of trauma within and outside of the Black body- my favourite book.
a passage north by anuk arudpragasam - one of the most tender books i've read this year. a guy gets a call that his grandmother's carer has died, so he makes the journey to the north of sri lanka. he reckons with the shrinking of his grandmother's world as she succumbs to her illness, the trauma and despair of outliving your own children, the spoils of war, religion, identity, mortality and politics. so beautiful
transcendent kingdom by yaa gyasi - i'm going to read everything yaa gyasi ever publishes. i loved reading homegoing last year, and this book just didn't disappoint. short but so substantial, a med grad prepares for her final project, trying to make sense of what makes an addict, an addict. caring for her depressed mother, she tries to bridge the gap between faith and science, as her family of 4 is now 2. there's just so much heart and care in this book
tell me i'm worthless by alison rumfitt - my horror book of the year. so twisted and malicious, a haunted house exposes the worst parts of a fascist society preying on a trans woman and her ex-girlfriend. this book is genuinely so insane, so menacing, and fucking incredible.
outline by rachel cusk - a writer travels to athens to teach a writing course. a novel in 10 conversations, she meets people who divulge their deepest desires, regrets, hopes and realities of their marriages, parenting, and what they think freedom looks like. i love a good monologue, and i got 10. cusk wields english in such an inspiring way
music
major music year. gonna do top 5 albums :)
AMERICAN GURL by KILO KISH
sexy by coco & clair clair
CRASH (deluxe) by charli xcx
renaissance by beyoncé
three dimensions deep by amber mark
thank you SO much for asking and reading if you've made it this far <3
