ESCAPE

*Trigger warning-s*xual assault*

My older sister was once stalked coming from work. The man walked behind her at a steady pace, she fumbled through her bag for the keys to get into her car. The man noticeably began walking faster behind her, she in turn increased her pace. She was able to enter and lock the doors just as the man had come up to her window. He started pounding on the window, demanding that she let him in. He proceeded to then try and open the doors. She started her car and sped off. The first call she made was to my father, the man who is supposed to be her pillar of support. Do you know what this man said? “You could’ve been raped and it would’ve been your fault for being out late at night.” I heard my sister shaken and crying on the other end. She was so hurt and confused by his response. After a few moments she said through her tears, “but...but I didn’t do anything. I just got off of work”. My mother chimed in, “Doesn’t matter”. I comforted my sister when she got home, I let her cry as I rubbed her back. “I was so scared”. She said, upset. I let her know it wasn’t her fault and she did everything right. A year later I opened up to my mother about my assault. My father told me that I deserved every bit of it, called me a punk, and choked me. My mother called the police and kicked me out of the house. My mother told me that the world is cold, and that she hopes “more men abuse me so that I can appreciate the great parents that I have”. I left April of 2019. Packed up my car and left. I didn’t really write this for any particular reason, I just needed a space to talk and get this off of my chest.
