honestly you probably shouldn't go into the medical profession if you aren't prepared to treat patients with dignity and respect - even if your job exploits you, even if your bosses suck, even if you're exhausted.

yes, you are allowed to have feelings and be tired. but you have to be willing and able to either admit when you can't do something (and take the consequences), or put how you feel aside and do your job. for the sake of your patient.

you and your job may be harmed by the medical industrial complex's wrongness, but to your patients, you are part of the complex that is also gravely failing them. you have the power to be a force of goodwill and care, or an instrument of oppression.

that is what you're signing up for when you become a medical professional. don't like it? don't become a medical professional.

My favorite line is when Chapel says 'Why is it so hard to explain to people that weren't there?'

When we go through a traumatic experience, it can be hard to connect because we feel that nobody understands what it was like to experience what we have.

Connection is often the first step in healing and just as often it’s the hardest step to take.

There is one thing I will miss about nursing and that's cute accessories — aesthetic cheat badge cards, colourful torch lights, brain-shaped badge reels, rainbow lanyards, mini whiteboard markers, pronoun pins, handover notebooks with beagles and cats, crocs with medical jibbitz... Maybe I'll post my little collection before I give it away when I leave work...

It probably tells a lot that this is the only thing I'll miss

(And maybe the times when you give some extra time and attention to a patient during personal care and they tell you they already feel more like themselves a bit and get that new spark in their behaviour or trying to talk more when their family comes to visit... despite how unprioritized personal care is on neuro icu, or any critical care in general, I always found it to be very soothing and rewarding)

EMT/paramedic uniforms are nicer than scrubs (and more gender euphoric for me) though and I'd be glad to leave for a slightly less toxic field with slightly better pay and career options

#i saw some stuff in nursing and I don't mean the horrible trauma pts or psych pts or even the standard of care from docs #some of my colleagues have zero empathy and id not trust them with me or my relative #most are competent enough on the medical side (most...) but the way some nurses treat their patients as a nuisance is just heartbreaking #i think i'd go crazy if i had to do nursing for another year and watch it not being able to do anything about it #the lack of choice in pts' own care on wards is also horrifying #me posts
