Hi there! My name is Hayden Stern and I'm a multidisciplinary artist working on an installation project about institutionalization, "therapy group" within the institution, and the inner worlds we create to survive loss of autonomy. I am looking for survivors of institutionalization and presently institutionalized people (preferably long term institutionalization/residential care, but if you've been a frequent psych ward visitor feel free to fill out this form as well) to respond to a specific prompt either via voice recording or in writing. This form is a way for me to collect contact info of interested participants so that I can 1) gauge interest in project participation and 2) reach out with next steps if you are a good fit for this project.
You will not be asked to share traumatic memories of your experiences - as a survivor of institutionalization myself, I am sensitive to how painful it can be to dwell on these memories.  However, you will be asked to answer a question you were likely asked while in an institution of some kind, specifically around visualizing a safe space/inner world.
Please share if you're up for it - I'd love to find a wide range of people to participate in this project.

Youth Liberation Theory Starter List
Repost, not gathered by me.
What I’d also add:
Original starter list link: https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/besAg6ftZLb59VyzAARKYPyFLdweM7aU1QSAREwHSBs/
The link’s content copied below the cut:
[This list is motivated to point towards introductory and in-depth texts concerning most topics revolving youth liberation.]
-------------------------------------------------------- What are youth rights?
-------------------------------------------------------- Why *all* brain development arguments used against youth autonomy are ageist (and also objectively incorrect):

-------------------------------------------------------- Why youth rights are necessary:

* This list is subjected to changes which would result in me deleting and re-uploading the entire post as newer data comes my way.*
I apologise in advance that a lot of the books I passed are not exactly available digitally at the moment, and some of the books for sale are also quite pricey at this time.
That said, I hope this serves well to everyone looking to get involved seriously in youth liberation as the very important cause that it is!

Just a disclaimer for anyone who's planning on watching the Program; the documentary about Ivy Ridge.
If you have religious trauma, a lot of the stuff performed at Ivy Ridge is very similar to a lot of the stuff in youth groups or church camps. Not to the extent of Ivy Ridge because oftentimes only the "good, god-fearing kids" went to church camp but a lot of the brain-washing stuff is very similar to the stuff used in evangelical programs so that could be a lot to process if you are just beginning in your journey of deconstructing all the stuff that happened to you in evangelical spaces.

I want accurate fanfiction of my favorite characters in the Troubled Teen Industry
I want to see Deku getting yelled at for helping his friend through a panic attack
I want to see Kacchan get injured in a hold because he got angry and the staff decided to run and tackle him onto concrete floors
I want to see Todoroki get blamed for making his parents upset and told how it’s all his fault he was abused
I want to see Tsuyu get parentified by a therapist and told she has to get her shit together because “who’s going to take care of her siblings? As the eldest child that’s your job.”
I want to see Kaminari and Mina get berated for zoning out and having ADHD and being unable to focus like other people and told that there’s something severely wrong with them
I want to see staff excusing Mineta’s sexual harassment and assault because “you shouldn’t have tempted him” and because his victim “tempted him” I want to see them both be equally punished
I want to see Kirishima be put in solitary confinement for months because he joked around and the staff didn’t like that
I want to see what happened to me and what I saw happen to others happen to my favorite characters

The PJO universe has a unique opportunity to highlight how awful and abusive the "troubled teen industry" is. Almost every demigod was labeled a "troubled kid" before they got to camp, and most grew up with single parents that don't know how to raise a half-blood (or any child). It's likely that a lot of them have been sent to these horrible programs, as their mortal parent's attempt to "fix" their behaviour. We know Piper and Leo were at a wilderness camp, but as far as I know they don't elaborate about their experience there (although I am only halfway through the Son of Neptune). They all got kicked out of several schools, including boarding schools, which are known to be unkind.
I don't just want "sometimes their teachers are monsters in disguise", I want it shown that real human people are running systems designed to abuse kids.

i wonder sometimes if i could have lived a functional life if the tti hadn't destroyed me. if my hips and knees and jaw wouldn't hurt so much from the sedentary lifestyle i now live because of how they've broken me. i wonder sometimes if i would be a happier person. if i could look my parents in the eye and truly believe they mean what's best for me. if i could lead a life where my mother doesn't get frustrated with me for depending on her. if making my own food wouldn't be too difficult to be worth doing. who would i be if i hadn't been kicked and beaten until i was broken enough to be built back up in the way they wanted? i wonder sometimes. and sometimes i prefer not to think about it.

conversion therapy rant/ trigger warning
thinking about adolescent lesbian love in conversion therapy. thinking about how they pitted me and her against each other. about how young and scared we were. thinking about awkward, secret, quiet kissing and corporal punishment and attack therapy and her being sent to another program in the middle of the night. being forced out of the closet in group ‘therapy’ to discuss my “sexual reactivity and perversion” (lesbianism). them reading my journals to my parents. the pure disgust they had for me.
thinking about being slipped a book of mormon under my pillow, walking through the LDS museum in temple square and bruised knees from being made to pray. thinking about the kids who snitched on us for extra food. about how i can’t blame them, if you’re beaten and sleep deprived and starved for long enough you’ll do literally anything for a bag of pretzels and some praise.
i’m thinking about how the troubled teen industry made money off of all of us being young and unrepentant and traumatized and angry and wild like only a house full teen girls can be

I think people need to give more leeway to parents who were manipulated by wilderness therapy programs. I'm not talking about the parents who are abusive and ship their kids off to these places to just get rid of them. I'm talking about the parents who have no idea how to navigate mental health in this day and age and just want to help their kids.
There's lots of stories of parents who try to be proactive in keeping their kid's mental health in check and the way these programs are described, it sounds like summer camp.
I've been to summer camp. I love summer camp. It's fun to be away from home for a week or two. If my parents were approached about sending me to a wilderness therapy place when I was starting out with anxiety, I would pack my bags and go right then and there. If you aren't aware of the breaking code silence movement and why it exists, there aren't many red flags. And the red flags that are shown are often covered up with a bunch of fake medical jargon that it confuses parents as to what they're doing.
There can be anger towards a lot of the parents who don't listen to their kids and just ship them off somewhere to get rid of them. They fucking deserve it.
But lets consider the nuance that a lot of parents didn't grow up with the mental health system that we have now. These programs prey on parents who genuinely want to help their kids and have no idea how to navigate helping their kid who's mentally ill or not even that they think their kid is mentally ill, they could just want their kid to go meet kids their own age while also having fun outdoors. Like I said, the shit they spew sounds like summer camp. It's meant to be deceptive. It's meant to prey on people who don't have a strong understanding of mental health.

Your kid talks back? Oh, send them to a wilderness “therapy”. What a fucking bullshit. Some people shouldn’t have kids.

I want to remind people that the idea of teenagers views and struggles are to be ignored. That what they say is childish so can be ignored. That their criticisms dismissed. propagates child abuse.
It promotes multi billion dollar industries that do that like the troubled teen industry (look it up, there's plenty of stories of it's abuse)that cause severe trauma.
It makes teens feel like they can't open up about bullying.
It makes teens feel isolated.
It makes teens reach out to predatory people that will actually listen.
