'I'm made of plastic, silly!' elicits a very specific image to a modern audience. One of shiny, brightly coloured modernism. Perhaps of cheap animal figures, and barbie dolls; harmless childhood toys.

But bear in mind this is said by a creature of the past. Have you ever held an antique baby doll? a weakly cast action figure? Even the case of an old typewriter? You can feel the brittle plastic, cold and rough; it feels as if it would snap under your fingers and its deceptive strength leaves your hands unsure of the density and your mind trying to figure it out.

Have you ever seen an old automaton? I read a book about them once, it was the first time I ever felt truly afraid of a puppet. Not the brash, fluffy, celebratory animal things of America, but the original European circus pieces.

One of the primary reasons a circus succeeds is spectacle: the creation of something so entirely awestriking that audiences have no choice but to gawp, and pay their fees. There's something so terrifying about not being able to look away. Sometimes not being able to see really is a good thing.

To see something that isn't a person move and talk like a person is horribly unnerving. It's far too common in this modern age, but can you imagine the terror of seeing these things firsthand for the first time, in a world where technology is scarce beyond an idea?

That fear is enough to power a thing for years to come. Enough to give it more power than a thing like that should ever have.

“The Mysterious House” Headcanons That No One Asked For

Pumpkin Rabbit is the only sentient character in the house. TVA, Billy, Pumpkin Rabbit, and Witch Sheep are all animatronic/robotic; the only difference is that Pumpkin Rabbit has something else underneath, human or otherwise. Both TVA and Witch Sheep speak in a monotone, robot voice, while Billy doesn’t speak at all—only the Pumpkin Rabbit has a humanoid voice. Pumpkin Rabbit takes the initiative through the episode as well, demanding offering for the children to stay at the house as well as being the killer himself. TVA and Billy don’t do anything, and all Witch Sheep does is follow behind Tammy and close the door behind her. I think Pumpkin Rabbit plays house with them for appearances, luring in his victims with the appearance of a lived-in house, until the night falls, and the mask can fall away (literally). I would probably think that Witch Sheep was sentient if she had a voice actor, but because of the text-to-speech generated voice lines, I can’t help but think she isn’t alive.

Pumpkin Rabbit kills fairly randomly; Tammy and Duckie just happened to set him off by leaving the bedroom. Why would he punish them for leaving the bedroom when he actively lures them out? I guess he could be maliciously unfair, but I just don’t think he has a motive. He wants to kill kids. That, to me, is far scarier than any motive we could come up with.

Pumpkin Rabbit either doesn’t know what sex is or he’s on a list. No in-between.

The house looks so creepy and decrepit because it works; kids and adults alike think it’s a haunted house. The inside is much nicer to keep up this appearance. And yes, it probably looks like that year-round, but everyone just thinks they don’t want to waste the trouble of taking it down and putting it back up.
