Well, this month started out strong, but man I'm gonna need one hell of a break from reading, at least from the pace I've been going. This month saw the end of my summer reading challenge at work and I also participated in the Magical Readathon hosted by Book Roast. Fortunately, I was able to finish my TBR in time on the very last day, but it was close. I have to say, this month had some strong reads, particularly towards the end. It was most likely because I was starting to get into more spooky/horror reads with fall starting to creep closer and I'm all in for the vibes right now.
Total Books Read: 16
Total Pages Read: 4,698
Books Read:
Sing No Evil by J.P. Ahonen and K.P. Alare (3/5) - Sing No Evil's commitment to the metal aesthetic is what makes this comic stand out among other musically influenced graphic novels. I was already familiar with J.P. Ahonen, being a fan of his Belzebubs series, so I knew going in that I would love the art style. The characters are wonderfully expressive and the humor really comes out in their reactions, though my favorite bits are when the band really "gets into the zone" during their performances. There is a polished quality to the art, very clean and neat linework with a down to earth color palette. The colors get you into the mood for a fall read, perfect for the darker undertones of the story.
Speaking of, it almost seems like there are two plots constantly conflicting in the narrative, one about a band that is struggling to find their audience while dealing with issues from their interpersonal relationships, and the other about nefarious cannibalistic monsters brainwashing music lovers through possibly satanic jams. The two rarely meet harmoniously in the middle, with the latter plot only really taking hold until the last third of the comic, which is in desperate need for a weighty climax. I would have loved some more hints of the antagonists spread out throughout the story, just to make it more even.
Feed Them Silence by Lee Mandelo (3.5/5) - While coated in a constant state of melancholy and near hopelessness, Lee Mandelo's novella is a fascinating take on parasocial relationships and the emotionless nature of scientific study. Sean is a complicated, desperate, and at times unlikable lead, the whole story fueled by her selfish actions and lack of taking accountability. There was never a time where I outright disliked her, though, as I found it easier to pity her as she spirals more and more into loneliness and an odd sense of isolation, despite her connection with the wolf Kate. From the beginning, we see that her relationships are already on the verge of collapsing, as she doesn't have any friendships beyond her work life and her marriage is falling apart at a rapid pace. The link that she has with Kate is the only one she has any semblance of control over and only because she chooses so.
At several points in the story, characters remind Sean that she is neglecting other methods of connection, that everything else in her life is falling by the wayside without any kind of acknowledgment of how others' feel. Riya, her wife, said it best when she says "Sometimes I'm not sure you see anyone else besides yourself as a person." Every action Sean makes is to satisfy an immediate emotional need, even in actions meant to benefit Kate, as her possessiveness of the wolf comes from a false sense of ownership due to their one-sided connection. I enjoy watching messy characters be messy, so Sean's journey was especially interesting to me.
Grounded for All Eternity by Darcy Marks (3/5) - Who knew a ragtag group of kids from Hell could be so dang endearing? The book gives a whole new meaning to "suburban hell," which funny enough ends up looking not too dissimilar from those on Earth.
Mal and his friends are destined for big things. What those things are exactly is a bit cryptic at first, as we don't really get the technicalities until the last third of the book, despite it being written in Mal's voice. It doesn't feel like a grand reveal or like a mystery solved, just information that wasn't given to us earlier. The plotting of events in the story seems chaotic at times, retreading story beats and going down certain paths that don't really circle back to anything. It could have used maybe just one more round of editing to chop off the excess to help with pacing, but it gets back on track fairly quickly.
I'm always down for different interpretations of hellish beings or give a little shake up to any religious mythos. Here we have angels that reside in Hell to secure the evil forces within and protect the balance of reality. They're not demonic, devilish, or evil in any way, they just happen to live where the work is. It's a very middle-grade friendly version of Hell, detailing the various rings and which sins belong to which ring. We only ever see the more residential side, complete with diners, comic book shops, and movie theaters, so no need to worry about kiddies bearing witness to eternal torment before they can crack open some Alighieri.
The story itself is a very fun ride, full of magic and Halloween-type shenanigans as the kids find themselves on Earth, trying to thwart an escapee from the Pit looking to manipulate the people of Salem. It's spooky enough to satisfy anyone looking for an exciting fall read that may not scare their socks off, but will definitely get them in the mood for the season. The cover alone should snatch any passer-by's attention, and really, who can resist a bright red cover with three mischief makers on it?
Twisted Wonderland the Manga Vol. 1: Book of Heartslabyul by Wakuna Hazuki and Sumire Kowono (4/5) - For a manga based on a mobile game, I think the transition between formats has worked incredibly well here. The story is condensed in a way that makes sense for the plot, pacing, and newcomers and the incorporation of a proper main character with his own backstory and personality is actually an improvement on the source material. As someone who loves the game, one of its downsides is how you, the player, interact with the story and the characters. Even though your presence initially is what gets the story going, you almost feel sort of needless as it goes on and everyone talks around you more than to you. Instead, the manga gives Yu more weight and tangibility, which is necessary when going from an interactive game to a physical book that hinges on having personable, engaging leads.
The art is absolutely spot on, to the point where I had to double check whether Yana Toboso was doing it. Sumire Kowono does a wonderful job of matching Toboso's style, while also giving the world a new sort of dimension. It allows us to see these characters be more expressive and dynamic in comparison to their limited character models in the game. I'm really looking forward to seeing certain story beats played out in manga form, now that we can truly see the magic and power of the characters in action.
The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta (4/5) - I tend to rush through books in verse, but this is one I really wanted to settle with. Atta has such a rich voice that shines through Michael. You can feel every emotion, each heartbreak, each shining moment of confidence or pride. Even with so little words, every moment leaves an impact. Though I wasn't able to personally relate with the material through its exploration of racial issues or identity, I still found those moments and discussions incredibly valuable and enlightening.
However, what I was able to latch onto was the book's take on a queer experience. Atta portrays Michael's queerness through such a wide spectrum, whether going from being incredibly comfortable to navigating his gender expression and sexuality to fearing coming out to people he's known for years. Atta also captures other aspects of queer identity formation through the supporting characters, like internalized homophobia. I found it refreshing that Michael didn't go through a period of self hatred, but that Atta still approached those feelings through the other characters. It allowed for multiple queer experiences to be shown and validated and illustrated that everyone's journey to understanding themselves often takes different paths.
What word I would ultimately use to describe this book is powerful. Not only in its words and effects, but also what it gives the reader. It instills in them that they are the ones with the power over who they are and how they choose to express it. You have the power to live in a way that's best for you, not for anyone else. There is no power or freedom in compromising who you are for other's acceptance.
A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger (4/5) - Darcie Little Badger's writing style has really grown since Elatsoe, going from a simple, but effective structure to something that feels more lyrical, more set into itself. I think I was a little more swept away by this one, as the world building felt more defined. The Reflecting World is such an interesting setting, filled with animal people, monsters, and spirits, some good, some bad, some ambiguous. I think Oli's chapters stood out the most to me because I've always been fascinated by indigenous animal tales. It was neat to see a world inspired by those stories, as well as how it interweaves with the modern world. Nina and Oli's perspectives are balanced quite well, even if it takes quite some time for the two to overlap.
The book gives a great example of the precarious domino effect that climate change sets off, how it only starts with a fluctuation in temperature, then leading to an increase in dangerous storms and the destruction of habitats, which in turn effects the species living therein. It goes to great lengths to show how delicate that cycle is and how disastrous the outcomes can be. Little Badger makes the topic incredibly accessible to readers unfamiliar with the specifics of the issue, as well as ensuring that it doesn't come off too heavy handed.
Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson (3/5) - Paranormal girl gangs in fiction have always hit a certain sweet spot with me. It might be the camaraderie, it could be the tendency to use supernatural powers for sweet revenge on those that had wronged them, either way this element made the book all the more entertaining. There were points where I still didn't really buy the friendships between the girls, there were still too many moments of the bullies hanging onto their old ways even after some empathizing character development, but hey, that's just teenagers for you.
The witchy aspects take more of a precedence than the living dead ones as there is some focus on the specifics of rituals, their consequences, all giving off a vibe similar to The Craft. We even have a biker gang full of older witches and really it can't get much better than that. I don't know enough about the Wiccan religion to say if it was an accurate or flattering portrayal, since not all Wiccans define themselves as witches or vice versa, so just take that as you will.
If you've seen a good amount of murder mysteries, you'll probably get the twist right away. At some point it just becomes a process of elimination to figure out who the killer is, and that becomes very simple when the cast itself isn't too large. Still, it didn't detract from the intensity of the reveal or the follow up. In fact, the spiral we see the killer go down was very much 0-60 in nothing flat. At least that does something for the creep factor.
Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee (3/5) - I'm not sure if this title hit as hard as some of the other Rick Riordan Presents books. That's to be expected of course, as there are different writers and genres at play here and they're all going to have their own style. This one does something interesting, tying together Korean culture and mythology with a sci-fi setting. Very rarely do I think I see fantastical elements in space, such as ghosts and shapeshifters, but I think it's done well here. It's evenly balanced so you don't have too much of one or too little of another. It's also nice to see a mythology represented that I don't see too often, which is really what this imprint is here for.
Min is an…interesting lead. She goes through the story with few repercussions or consequences, saying that it's unfair for foxes to be treated as liars and manipulators, but has no qualms about using her powers to Charm people. I think these contradictions make sense for a thirteen year old, one that's prone to being somewhat impulsive. But I think things just came a little too easily for her. There were a few too many conveniences that sort of pulled me out of the story and I think the gaining and using the magical macguffin was a little too clean.
Selected Poems of Gwendolyn Brooks by Gwendolyn Brooks (4/5) - I was drawn to this book after reading Brook's memorable, moving piece "To the Young Who Want to Die." It was one that really resonated with me and I wanted to see if he had any more writing that was just as striking. Fortunately, this book contains multitudes.
Brooks' work, at least in this collection, touches on a variety of themes, such as war fatigue, class struggles, racial tensions, womanhood, maturity, etc. I'm not going to lie and say that I understood each poem right off the cuff. Her voice is rich, emotional, and lyrical, something the ear has to be trained for to listen and understand. Some had clear, overt messages and stances, where others deserve a bit more time to study. There is nothing cryptic in what Brooks wants to achieve with her writing, so once you're used to the language you can catch on pretty easily.
I have favorites from all over this collection, like "And if Sun Comes," "The Lovers of the Poor," "Men of Careful Turns, Haters of the Forks in the Road," "The Crazy Woman," "In Emanuel's Nightmare," etc. There is such profound emotion here that each poem feels like a release or a catharsis, a way to unleash pent up feelings while also informing the reader of very real issues and sentiments. Her writing has a down to earth quality, her words not sending you to this heightened plane of beauty and wafting poetics, but simply revealing what has been in front of you the entire time.
Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree (3/5) - (Review)
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor (4/5)- Listened to the audiobook as a way to remember what happened in the series before I start on the final book. I think I enjoyed it about as much as I did the first time around and that final gut punch at the end was still so effective. There is so much creativity in this series, especially in the world building and characterization of the seraphim and chimera. Taylor's worlds always feel so expansive, even if we remain more on Earth at this point in the series than the more fantastical ones. If anything, I think the romance aspect didn't really do much for me, since it comes on a little too quick, or maybe it was just a case of me zoning out while listening. Either way, still a solid start to an immersive, engaging series.
How Do You Live? by Genzaburo Yoshino (4/5) - I have such a range of feelings for this book. While written in a way that might not be so accessible for the modern tween, it's insightful, profound, meaningful, reflective, and ultimately believes the truth of its message. It reads like The Little Prince in so many ways,  albeit more domestically, displaying some deep truths in life in a way that resonates with young and old readers. Sure, there are several points where it feels like the characters are just a mouthpiece for the author, especially the uncle, but to read this book knowing the context of the time in which it was written makes it feel a little less overbearing.
Copper's internal journey throughout the book was such a poignant one, reflecting on his place in the world, his connections with others, and how he will ultimately contribute to the world. The benefits of selfless thinking, of being aware of all that we're tied to, and how our actions affect everyone around us are natural themes in coming of age stories, but there's something here that makes them truly resonating. I think it may be the added history of this story being released at a time where free thought in Japan was criminalized, where the military was gaining more and more power. Its intent to inform youth on ethics, philosophy, and self reflection seems innocent and earnest without being patronizing or condescending. It's a book that treats its readers seriously, which feels like a hard to come by quality at times in youth fiction.
Mysteries of Thorn Manor by Margaret Rogerson (4.5/5) - This novella was the kind of post climax, settling down sort of fluff that I always love reading, an extended epilogue that sends the main characters beyond what we thought was the final page. It was nice to see the characters reacting to a more personal, domestic sort of conflict, Elisabeth facing it sword first, Nathaniel with his playful wit, and Silas' calm, but sometimes scary dutifulness. There is a more laid back quality to the story, but Rogerson still makes some room for emotion and tugging on some heartstrings. I was a big fan of Silas in Sorcery of Thorns so I was glad to see some more focus on his character, glimpsing into his history with Nathaniel's family and a sort of tragic aspect to his being. He also gets a lot of big laughs, what with his slight snobbery and high butler standards.
At this point, I feel pretty confident that I will eat up anything Margaret Rogerson writes. Her characters are just a joy to read and I can't get enough of them. I think this series so far has ended on a pretty sweet note, so it feels like a continuation it's needed, but I sure as hell would want one if it were in the cards.
Hellaween by Moss Lawton (5/5) -
Mid-2000s Hot Topic core mixed with Halloween goodness is really all I've ever wanted in a graphic novel. Everything about this comic, from the Invader Zim-esque character designs, which are fitting given that the creator has worked on the Zim comics, to the characters that are 50% snark, 50% feral gremlin energy. I love me a trio that all share a collective brain cell that is oftentimes misplaced. Really, I don't think I've been this satisfied by graphic novel in a while in terms of a story just having absolute fun.
If I were to have one critique, I would say that the beginning starts on a somewhat shaky note. Gwen seems to have met her monster friends before this story takes place and each time they reference their first meeting I felt a little lost, wondering if there was a piece of the story I was missing out on there. Fortunately that feeling doesn't stick around too long as shenanigans ensue immediately.
Also, having a nonbinary werewolf main character is definitely a good way to get me to put an instant five stars on anything.
Dead Collections by Isaac Fellman (5/5) -
I had such a unique experience while reading this book. I felt totally engrossed within the mind of Sol Katz, a trans vampire archivist in their 40s constantly finding himself at odds with the world around him. Whether it's through the transphobic remarks made by his coworker or the lack of accommodation he faces at work, society has a way of making him feel out of place. I loved the framing of vampirism as a chronic illness, something that Sol didn't choose to happen to him yet it's something he has to plan his entire life around. It grounds the book from being an overt monster fantasy, leaning more towards focusing on someone just trying to make living work for them.
It's definitely more of a character-driven story, as the plot slowly unfurls in the background until maybe the last fifty pages. Going into the direction of a haunted archive seems like a natural route to go down, but the way in which Fellman does it feels so creative and emotionally investing.
I don't think it's a book that's going to work for everyone. It goes into topics like the process of archiving, fanfiction culture, gender journeys, all topics that can be so personal. I was able to relate to so much of it, so that's probably why I'm giving it such a high rating. There's a sort of lugubrious, cerebral tone throughout the book that makes it seem slower than it really is, but that's another quality that really endears me to it. The book makes you feel like you're just watching someone's life, it's not spectacular or particularly revolutionary, but it's their's. Though it has its differences, Sol's life shares the same goals as most of ours: find purpose, sense of self, love, fulfillment, belonging, etc.
Lockwood and Co.: The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud (4/5) -
Jonathan Stroud built such a robust, engaging world with Lockwood and Co. It can be eerie, unsettling, and dangerous, where the dead stalk the night and range from being just an uncomfortable nuisance to full on murderous. Having only children being able to see ghosts gives our main characters a good amount of power and agency in the story, though Stroud is good about not painting all adults as pathetically useless. I was a bit confused a bit as to when this story takes place, as it has a sort of timeless quality, but does mention a few modern things here and there. It kind of falls in the same place as A Series of Unfortunate Events at times, where the time period is generally whatever it wants to be.
The writing is effectively creepy at points, giving a good introduction to horror to younger readers looking for a bit of chill. I don't think it's too much for a middle schooler, but that's coming from an adult that was watching things at that time that they probably shouldn't have. Still, it's a great ghost story that leads our characters into pretty precarious situations.
As always, what would a middle grade fantasy series be without a core trio. I liked Lucy's clear, empathetic voice as she narrates the story, with the charismatic Lockwood and persnickety George at her side. There's a bit of casual fatphobia with the way George is described at times, which is a bit of a downside. They bounce off another fairly well, though, and at least have a entertaining dynamic.
Average Rating: 3.81/5

Mina's like: it's been a rough week AND the men are staring at my husband and blushing. i had to transcribe one of them calling him a living flame of manly vigor.
Honestly, I think Mina's an exact mirror of Jonathan when it comes to people being extremely heart-eyes about their significant other.
Mina, just arrived, starts being Mina: Hello! I'm here to ruin Dracula's life and transcribe it in triplicate so everyone knows it
The Suitors Three, tripping over their own feet: Oh damn she's amazing <3
Jonathan: I know c:
Jonathan, just got anime man hairstyled, starts sharpening his kukri: I Am Going to Fillet Dracula Whether God Helps or Not
The Suitors Three, all sweating: Oh damn he's amazing <3
Mina: I know c:
I just think it'd be hilarious that the Harkers remain completely oblivious to the polycule choking on their crushes simply because they see it all as: 'Oh yeah, absolutely, I get it, my spouse is the greatest person on Earth, totally understandable to react that way, they're wonderful <3.'*
(*Which also ties into my low-key belief that while Jonathan and Mina are biromantic, they stand somewhere between demisexual and asexual. These two have probably walked through a lifetime of unnoticed flirtation from others because it just Did Not Register. That they realized they were smitten with each other was a genuine miracle. Lucy clocked it months before either of them and assumed they were already together.)

"You might be in a YA low fantasy book if you turn the corner to get to your locker and come upon a daemon. They contain everything odd about high school and literalize it with fantasy. Here is a must-read list of YA low fantasy books for genre lovers and novices alike.
Fantasy has a lot of sub-genres. Some are more well-defined than others, but on the broadest scale, there are high fantasy books and low fantasy books. Low fantasy books have fantastical elements in an otherwise normal world. You might be a witch working in a Starbucks who serves a cappuccino to a werewolf. The fact that you have magic may be well known. It could be a secret from others around you. As long as there is magic, abnormal beings, or paranormal somethings in the normal setting, it’s low fantasy."

Can I request Hazbin Hotel characters reacting to an artist!reader that draws a lot but never shows anyone their work but one day accidentally left it out and their partner finds it and sees several sketches and finished drawings of them? Sorry if it’s an odd ask, I’m an artist and I thought it would be a cute idea I don’t see nearly enough, it’s okay if you can’t. Thank you either way!!!

TW:A little flirty with Angel’s reaction. Other than that none!
A/N: Not an odd request at all, Friend! For Angel’s part I did write for a male Reader and Fem Reader for Vaggie! KINDA SHORT I APOLOGIZE FRIEND!
-🦌Alastor🦌-
-🦌 Alastor was very curious to see you carry a sketchbook around all the time. He wanted to pry so badly.
-🦌 But he didn’t, he simply ignored the book and only ever asked about it if you were near him. You always get flustered and hide the book even further. Oh now he’s wondering what kind of dark secrets you have in there~
-🦌 But to his surprise when he finds it open and on a page, he sees drawings of him, he carefully flips the page and sees a half down sketch of him sitting in front of the fireplace.
-🦌 Oh boy you just made his ego inflate and his undead heart soar to new heights. His tail starts wagging and that’s the only way someone can catch how happy he is.
-🦌 Now? He’s going to poke a little fun at you, “My Dear, if you had to pick anyone in the hotel to be your muse who would it be?”
-🦌 Silly deer man loves you and your abilities, he often tells you that your work needs to be displayed in a museum.
-🍎Lucifer🍎-
-🍎 Oh boy- when he finds out you can draw? Oh he gets super excited and asks if you can draw him a duck- even if it’s a little doodle! He doesn’t care!
-He doesn’t really ask or pry into your hobby much but he will admit he does want to see what you draw.
-When he does see that you drew him of all people he gets all flustered and he’s prideful cause his partner?? His darling little angel drew him?!?
-He will volunteer to pose for you, he’s used to sitting still for hours on end!
-He will even pose naked if you want him to! Just say the word and he’ll drop his clothes right there.
-🎰Husk🎰-
-🎰 He watched you sit at the bar and draw to your heart's content and never really commented on it.
-🎰 When he does peek into your sketchbook it’s to pull behind the bar into a safe place so nothing ruins your work.
-🎰That’s when he notices the drawings and doodles of him and his tail curls happily. The way you captured him doing menial tasks sends his heart into overdrive.
-🎰 You were too good for him, damn it. The next time you find it? It has a little sticky note on the cover of your sketchbook and it has a little drawing of you with a small message, “Had to go out with Alastor. Love you, Dollface.”
-🕷️ Angel Dust 🩷-
-🕷️ Oh this man- he loves it! You’re an artist and he’s also like an artist! But of a very very different genre.
-🩷 He also doesn’t pry much as he understands privacy. He wants to give you that as much as he can since he doesn’t get much of it.
-🕷️ Once he finds out you draw him? He’s over the fucking moon cause his man? His precious boyfriend draws him!
-🩷Expect him to start flirting more and more but with art related flirts. “Come on, Suga’~ Draw me like one of your french girls~” im sorry. He’s very supportive!
-👑Charlie👑-
-👑 oh this baby girl..she’s been so busy lately that if she did notice it completely slipped her mind!
-👑 But when she finds your sketchbook? She gets super excited cause you draw this good?? She’s so proud that she immediately goes to find you!
-👑 She is another who fully supports you! You need anything, don't hesitate to ask!
-👑 Will try to convince you to start painting for the hotel! You can say no it won’t offend her.
-🎀Vaggie🎀-
-🎀 Much like Husk she won’t point it out or comment on it.
-🎀Will find out you draw her when she sees it when cleaning up and gets all blushy cause this is how you see her?
-🎀 Comes clean immediately about seeing your drawings and tells you how amazing they are.
-🎀 Shyly asks if she can pose for you next time, how could you say no to her?

after they get Eddie to the hospital just in time to save him from the bat bites he actually ends up in a coma for a little bit (him and Max bond over that once they’re both fully recovered because of course they’ll be fine what you talking about) and OBVIOUSLY king Uncle Wayne rushes over to the hospital once this random Wheeler girl tells him that’s where Eddie is and he sits with him and that’s how Wayne meets the most random collection of people ever
Steve Harrington (who Wayne almost refuses to believe is related to Richard because this kid is nothing like his parents) and Dustin Henderson stay practically glued to Eddie’s side, random kids that are apparently in Hellfire and some that aren’t drift in between Eddie’s room and the Mayfield girl’s across the hall, some kids from Eddie’s year (this current one) also come in to join Steve and even the undead Police Chief (??!) and his band of merry men occasionally pop in even though Wayne is pretty sure Hopper is the only one who has ever met Eddie and the less said about that the better
but goddammit Wayne likes them all, firstly because they saved his boy but once he’d started to chat to them it was impossible to dislike them, he’s especially partial to Steve, who he can chat to about sports which he’s never been able to really do with Eddie and maybe it’s because he’s spent the most time with him one on one, Robin because he recognises something in her (and maybe Steve but he isn’t sure) that he sees and knows is in Eddie, Dustin for obvious reason and little Erica Sinclair has wedged her way into a soft spot after she verbally tore into a nurse who seemed to believe the allegations even after they were cleared
Eddie wakes up to Wayne and Steve quietly chatting and he’s beyond confused to see them sat together but he’s grateful to not be alone, he clings to each of their hands, anchoring himself before he slips back into sleep and happy that the man who may as well be his dad hasn’t abandoned him
once he wakes up on one of those first few days and his Uncle had been there when he fell asleep but now he’s not but he is surrounded by pretty much the entire Hawkins gang, he slurs out a ‘wher’s Ucl Wyn’ and Erica looks him directly in the eye and says ‘OUR Uncle Wayne has gone to get some coffee with Steve’ and the others just nod and it seems that alongside Eddie they’ve also adopted his Uncle Wayne into their weird little cult, Eddie falls back asleep with a content little smile on his face as Erica grips his hand in her small one

Benny Weir With a Vampire Girlfriend Headcanons
Masterlist
Request Something!
***
I like to think vampires are territorial to some degree
So the second you start dating Benny, you become way more protective than you would be of a friend
If someone’s flirting with him, you put a stop to that right away
Even if he’s trying to tell them that he’s not interested because he has a girlfriend
You were waiting for Benny in the cafeteria with the gang. Usually, you’d walk together, but you had forgotten to grab a juice box of blood for lunch, so you had to race home to grab one.
“Shouldn’t Benny be here by now?” You asked the group. None of you were in his period before lunch, so he usually kept to himself. This meant that if you didn’t walk with him, he’d race right to the cafeteria. But it had been ten minutes, and he still wasn’t here. “I’m kind of worried.”
“He’s probably fine, Y/n,” Sarah said reassuringly, patting your arm.
“Why don’t you just listen for him?” Rory asked. You raised a brow.
“Don’t you mean look for him, Rory?”
“No, listen. If he’s anywhere in the school, you could probably pick up on it.” It had suddenly occurred to you that one of the perks of being undead was you had gained an incredible sense of hearing.
“Huh, Rory having a good idea. That’s a first.” Erica muttered. You started tuning everyone out, searching for your boyfriend with your ears. You shut your eyes tight to focus. Starting out faint, you started to hear his voice.
“I should really get to lunch.” He said, laughing somewhat nervously. You didn’t have to wonder why because a voice near him responded.
“Oh, okay.” It seemed pouty, but soon turned flirtatious. “Wanna walk together?” Your stagnant blood started to boil. He was talking to some girl, probably from his class. You could practically hear her playing with her hair, trying to get more of his attention.
You don’t know what came over you. You knew Benny could handle himself, but there was some instinct in you telling you to get that girl as far from him as possible. One second, you were sitting in the cafeteria, about to leave dents in the table from how hard you were gripping it in anger.
The next, you were rounding the corner, heading straight for the two.
The girl leaned against the lockers by Benny’s classroom, staring at him with a dreamy look. You were even more pissed, only you got to look at him that way. Luckily, Benny looked like he was looking for any way out of there. And you were about to give him his escape. You were just waiting for an opening.
“I usually walk with my girlfriend, who’s waiting for me right now. So I should go.” The girl seemed disappointed in his answer, but quickly recovered.
“Well, she doesn’t seem like that good of a girlfriend. If I was dating you, you’d never have to walk anywhere alone.” Wow, that’s fucking creepy.
“It’s a good thing I’m here now, then.” You said, stepping into their view. Benny’s mood visibly brightened while the girl scowled. “Ready, Bens?” You held your hand out, which he grasped immediately. The two of you walked back to the cafeteria, leaving the sulking girl in the dust.
“Thanks, Baby. That chick would not let up.”
“I was about to suck her dry.” You grumbled.
“Well, I know something else you could suck dry,” Benny smirked at his own joke.
“Oh my God, you’re disgusting.” You pushed him away but still laughed.
You scare him with mirrors
A lot
It’s not intentional half the time
After all, it’s not your fault you don’t have a reflection anymore
You and the gang were having one of your regular sleepovers, complete with video games, junk food, and having to watch after Ethan’s little sister. Luckily, you all stayed up later than Jane, so she was soon tucked into bed and out like a light.
“Benny, go wash your hands when you’re done. I don’t want pizza grease on my controllers.” Ethan grimaced as he watched his best friend practically inhale the food. Sometimes Benny joked that he was eating for the both of you, since you weren’t able to enjoy human food anymore. It was a sweet gesture, but it also baffled you how much he could eat without getting sick.
“Ugh, fine,” Benny responded after swallowing his last piece. He went to give you a kiss, but you pushed him away.
“When you’re less messy.” He pouted, sulking all the way to the bathroom. You leaned against the island, immediately getting off when you felt something on your arm. Someone must have spilled some soda because there was a small puddle on the island, and your arm was now wet and sticky.
Grimacing, you went to the bathroom to wash off your arm. Stopping at the doorway, you waited for your turn as Benny washed his hands. When he washed all the soap off, you thought he would dry off. But instead, he grabbed one of the washcloths in the towel cupboard that the Morgan’s had and dipped it in the water. He leaned in close to the mirror and started washing his face.
When Benny’s face was cleaned, he threw the washcloth in the laundry basket. Thinking he was alone, and being the dork he was, he started doing random poses in the mirror. You would’ve kept watching if you weren’t so bothered by your sticky arm. But luckily, he spun around and jumped in surprise at your presence. You couldn’t help but laugh.
“How long have you been standing there?” He asked, a bit embarrassed. You nudged him a bit, so you had room to wash up.
“Just a few minutes.” You said as you scrubbed. “I’m surprised you didn’t see me in the mirror.”
“Uh… Y/n…” You looked up, confused but soon realized what he meant. Sometimes you forget that having no soul meant no reflection. But you tried not to think of it like that, so you laughed.
“Oh, right.” You dried off and looked at Benny, just to see that he was already looking at you.
“Can I kiss you now?” He asked. “I’m mess-free.” He held up his now clean hands and gestured to his clean face.
“Sure.” You grinned, arms winding around his neck to bring him to your level. He pressed a hand to your back to bring you closer as he kissed you.
The two of you probably would’ve stayed in there forever if you weren’t interrupted.
“No making out in my bathroom!”
You always team up when you and the gang are fighting monsters or looking for clues
A warlock and a vampire are a dynamic duo
Especially when they’re dating, and the vampire won’t let anything happen to her warlock
This fight seemed very ironic to you. Ethan had a vision that the school’s annual blood drive was being run by vampires. You couldn’t let these nurses get away with all this blood for themselves. But while you fought them off, you were fighting your own urges to break into the truck that had all the blood.
But there was a problem with the truck. Two fellow vampires, Rory and Erica, were stuck in the truck that was full of blood. So while you, Ethan, and Sarah tried fighting the demonic nurses off, Benny tried breaking Rory and Erica out. Your job was to keep the nurses away from Benny so he could focus on opening the doors.
“How cute. You seem to have your own blood bag.” One nurse sneered at you. “Mind if I have a bite?” She sped at you, and it took all your strength to keep her away from your boyfriend. Kicks and punches were thrown with fangs bared.
“Find your own blood bag!” You launched her across the small parking lot with a powerful kick. You turned to Benny, who was now staring at you. “You okay?”
“That was so cool.” He whispered. You grinned, about to respond, when you sensed the nurse recovering. You raced towards her, and the two of you continued your fight. Benny stared at you, somewhat flustered, knowing you were doing all of it to protect him.
“Benny!” The boy was brought out of his thoughts by Ethan yelling at him. “Focus!”
“Sorry!”

Leave me alone, get your Stella! | Joseph Quinn x fem. Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: You are new cast on Stranger Things and on Geekend Week you came to talk about your character and play some Dungeons and dragons but also to show everyone how you and your boyfriend have an excellent relationship being both some clowns.
Warning: none 🤍
—————————————————————————
It was Geekend week on Netflix and you as part of the new casting where invited to a little interview and also the Dungeons and Dragons segment as your character was a member of The Hellfire Club and also Eddie’s best friend on screen who later became a main character who joined the gang to fight against Vecna you have a lot of fans and also so many of them ship your and Joe character as a couple. The thing that many of them didn’t know was that you and Joseph started dating since a year ago a little after the shooting of season 4 ended and you finally have time to know each other better and found a way to have a relationship against the distance while you work and live on Los Angeles and Joseph most of the time spent his life on London.
You where really happy finally having more recognition for your work, wearing a black velvet dress with buttons on the front part and your long hair lightly waved on the ends make your face look prettiest and sweet than ever, Joe really have a hard time trying to make himself stand away from you, not because he doesn’t want to be around you, but he knows that he’s going to be a totally mess if he hugged you or kiss you cause he really miss you a lot and nobody would be capable of separate him from you.
When it was time of the Hellfire Table you sit between Priah and Finn just for fun and also because the producers decided that, the game started and you where having difficulties with the game as you weren’t so fluent in this role and constantly Priah help you understand.
- So your highness Princess Sorceress of the dark woods, you’re going to play this time and have the decision to end with the undead with one of your spells but also you have the option to use a weapon, please take the 20-sided dice and make your luck speak - Dave talk euphorically while you throw the red dice on the table making everything shouting loud
- I have a 20! It’s enough? - You know this was just a game but also your heart feel so full of happiness to have the highest score between the players
-More than enough, so princess you have now a silver sword and you can put a spell on it so the power of this weapon is stronger or you can give this weapon to one of your friends who is unarmed and they can join and fight with you
-Uhmm i think i would give this weapon to Chad - You smile shy looking at Finn - he needs to fight and help us
- Oh your highness! Thank you so much - everyone around laugh as Finn make a little reverence and take your hand giving a fake kiss on it
-So Joe, Stella is now save but she’s going crazy, screaming and kicking because she’s traumatized- Dave make one of his best performances imitating how Stella react
-Hey hey Stella, calm down baby, baby baby baby! - Joseph move his hands trying to “calm her” as his arms wrapped around Dave - im here darling!
Everyone around laughing even you join the crowd cause honestly seeing your boyfriend comforting a grown man acting like a girl was funny as hell but in your girlfriend heart more in the deepest you feel a little ache seeing how your beloved interact with someone who is not your character. Priah look at you knowing that Joseph and you have a little game where you both act jealous of dumb situations and people who clearly don’t have any chance to break your relationship, like Joe Keery and Gaten who act very touchy with Joseph or Maya who many times tell Joseph that he needs to be careful with you or she would take out her inner Robin and steal his girlfriend, so now was a perfect moment to act like that.
The game keeps on and after Gaten, Priah and Finn you turn came again, you throw the dice again and everyone celebrate one more time when you have a 20 score again.
-Well seems like this princess is so lucky! - Dave point at you make you smile a little shy - well Princess now is your turn to save on of your friends, there’s Stella and Joe and while they’re hugging som of the creatures come around and try to catch them but you’re there, Chad finally give you back your Silver sword and you have the control of everything now, what you want to do?
- I want to stab them - You said with a light smile looking at the screen of your ipad
- Wich of them? - Priah quietly said make you laugh knowing that you referred to Joe and Stella
- You know…whoever is on my way - You laugh with the rest as you make your movements saving the characters and killing the creatures as Finn laugh getting now the reference
-Oh she’s jealous of Stella! - he laugh giving you a light hug as Gaten look at Joseph laughing trying to create some friction
The game keeps on again and after a couple of minutes playing and making some movements you have your nerves really jealous boiling inside you, as ridiculous this can sound, you feel pushed back for Joseph and he honestly doesn’t help being the joker he is.
- So Joe, now you’re in the Upside down and Stella is there trapped and between the spiked claws of Vecna who look at you laughing knowing your suffering- Dave hand move on the air making the scene
-If you touch her Vecna…i swear to god… - Joseph looked so frustrated facing a invisible enemy while everyone turn their heads to you expecting your reaction but you didn’t say anything you just look at Joe waiting to him look at you too and when you both eyes meet you raise and eyebrow let him know that he was on troubles for flirt with that imaginary character - oh no, i am more afraid of that look than Vecna himself
-Sadly we can finish Vecna on this board but you’re going to take that angry princess to your house and we can’t help you - Dave laugh finally falling in your lovers game
-it’s okay, it’s okay i can deal with my woman! - Joe laugh making his movements on the ipad and being honest you can’t keep forcing a blank face and smile proudly for your tiny fury reactions.
- So Joe now Stella is on Vecna hands but our beautiful and amazing Princess Sorceress from the dark woods is being attacked by Vecna mind and she’s suffering on the floor, her mind is being corrupted and you have on your hands the decision to save just one of them
Joe look at the ipad and then at you deeply breathing and covering his face frustrated as Gaten laugh rubbing his back
- You can do it bro! Just remember that if you leave Stella then kill Vecna would be more difficult…and if you leave our Princess
- I would be a dead man tomorrow i know that! - Joe show his watery eyes making everything laugh even you feel a little victorious seeing how he have a mental breakdown- babe im sorry you know how much i love you but i need to save the game - Joe look at you almost asking for forgiveness - i would save Stella!
Everyone around make a gasp sound as you look at Joe placing your hand of your chest dramatically trying not to laugh making Joseph go to your side and hug you tight as you lightly push him
- Leave me alone, get your Stella back - Even the staff can’t control their laugh as you and Joseph make a board game turn into a lovers war
30 minutes later the game ended having Priah and her Lady applejack as the one who ends with Vecna, as everyone said goodbye to the show and the cameras turn off you quickly walk to the staff so they can remove the mic and all the stuff you need to the show as soon as you being free you see a running Joseph coming to you with his open arms hugging you tight making all the girls of the staff make a laugh “Owww”
- Babe I’m sorry i let you die there i really sorry my love - Joseph swayed with you between his arms as you laugh and hug him
-i feel really offended, honestly i feel like betrayed
-No im sorry i really want to make this funny - he laugh kissing your temple
Later that night your and Joseph name where everywhere around twitter and instagram tagging you both in photo editions, fan art, and so many other funny clips, even many of the fans send messages about being worried that you and Joseph really fight or make out of context clips when they show you “sad” because Joseph make you feel uncomfortable.
After read and see all the online content you ask for Joseph permission for post a photo of you both since you decided have a private relationship out of the social media but he happily agreed as you both take a selfie where you snuggle comfortably on his side and he surrounded you with his arms while you both where sitting on a bench of the balcony and post it on your Twitter with a cute description
“A princess can’t be without his master 🖤 “

Somewhere Between Edward and Dracula - Eddie Munson x Reader
Summary: Modern!AU. Vampire!Eddie. With Halloween coming up, a group of friends decide to see if the old Creel house is really haunted. It is, but not by ghosts like they assumed.
Notes: I honestly just made this modern because I needed to make Twilight jokes. But it works, since Eddie says he’s been a teenager since the 80′s. Just wanted to write a Halloween-ish story and I love me some vampire!eddie.
Warnings: language, general vampire-ness, i think that’s it?
Words: 3.2k
Tumblr media
Eddie can hear the gang coming for miles. There are five of them in total. Two guys and three girls, if he can tell by the pitch of their voices. There’s one guy and one girl who are the loudest. They’re bickering back and forth with one another, but it’s in a friendly manner.
“Admit you’re scared,” the guy is saying.
“I’m not scared,” the girl answers. “I’m just saying what if we get caught?”
“Robin!” the guy answers with a groan. “Loosen up. Even Jonathan isn’t worried about that.”
“Hey!” There’s a sound of protest, from Jonathan presumably.
Teenagers. Like himself, Eddie thinks. Except, not quite anymore.
The group gets closer to the old house and Eddie sighs and rests his head on the wooden beam behind him. He’d been held up in the attic since he first heard them approaching. Kids and teenagers alike were no strangers to daring each other to spend time in the supposedly haunted house. The house is haunted, just not by ghosts like everyone seems to think. Eddie would deal with the annoying giggles and screams as friends tried to scare one another. Some would just dare one another to touch the house. The braver, and mostly the older, would come into the house itself to try and get a proper scare.
Once in a while was whatever; Eddie sometimes even had a good laugh about how scared some people got from nothing. But October always brought more people, almost on a nightly basis. They’d bundle up in their sweaters and jackets, which was Eddie’s only reminder that it was cold outside. Not like he could tell. He hardly ever bothered to mess with anyone who came to the house. There was no need, they always freaked themselves out. The most he would usually do is move about quickly and quietly if the group decided to make its way to the attic, where Eddie spent most of his time. If he made a floorboard creak or a doorknob rattle here and there to keep up the haunted rumors, so what?
The Creel House had been abandoned for decades, which made it the perfect haunt for Eddie. No pun intended. He remembers hearing rumors about the old home when he was a child, and a real, alive teenager. Eddie never held any stock in those rumors and proved to himself that they were in fact false when he moved in after becoming undead.
The five teens were close enough now that Eddie could hear their footsteps. In a few hundred more yards he’d be able to hear their heartbeats. That didn’t bother him, like most people thought it would. One of the perks of living in a house that had no upkeep was that all sorts of animals would crawl into the underbrush or even find their way into the house. They were more than enough to supplement his “appetite.”
“It doesn’t look so scary,” one of the girls says.
“You go in first, then,” the guy who is not Jonathan answers.
           “Okay.”
Eddie hears the girl’s soft footfalls as she walks up the porch steps. The old wooden front door swings open on squeaky hinges. The steps become slower as she finally enters the threshold. Her friends are all still out on the sidewalk, Eddie can tell from the sound of their breathing. One of them is breathing shallower than the others. The girl who was nervous about getting caught. Robin, Eddie recalls.
The brave girl walks through the first floor, moving from room to room. Her heartbeat is only slightly faster than it was on the walk here. She really isn’t that scared. Sometimes, if it was a young guy who was being cocky and trying to show off that he wasn’t afraid, Eddie would mess with them by using his speed and stealth to yank a piece of their hair or clothing without notice. It took the cockiness out of their tone every time.
Edde had never encountered a girl who was cocky about her braveness. Even if he did, he didn’t think he’d mess with them. His gentlemanly upbringing wouldn’t allow it.
When the girl finishes moving through all the rooms on the first floor, she walks back to the front door.
“Are you all coming or not?” she calls to her friends.
Footsteps and floorboards bending tell Eddie that the whole group follows her inside. He can’t tell their footsteps apart by sound, but the slowest heartbeat continues to be the girl who first entered. She’s also the first one to walk up the stairs.
“Where are you going?” The girl, Robin, whisper-yells to her, as if she doesn’t want to upset any ghosts.
“Upstairs. I’ve seen everything down here,” the brave girl says.
“By yourself?” the third girl asks.
“You can come if you want, Nance.”
“Nance” makes no response, and the girl’s steps continue up the stairs alone. Eddie has to admit to himself, he’s intrigued. That’s hardly ever happened during his time at The Creel House. Sometimes one member of the party would claim to not be scared and start to roam on their own, but their heartbeat would give their fear away to Eddie. This girl really wasn’t afraid.
“Stupid,” Eddie mutters to himself. “She should be.”
That isn’t true, though. Eddie knows he’d never hurt her, or anyone. He is getting curiouser by the second, though. It wouldn’t be hard to take a peek at the girl. She would never know.
He hears the girl cough on the floor below him and wonders what piece of dusty furniture caused it. Eddie wonders if he’d clean the dust if it bothered him. But not having to breathe meant he didn’t care what dirt and dust accumulated.
The door that reveals the stairs to the attic opens and Eddie finally stands from the cobwebbed floor below him. There were no shortage of places to hide, but Eddie was trying to decide which one would let him have the best view of this brave, or possibly stupid, girl. He decides to leap on the beam above him, nestling himself into a dark corner of the attic. Not that the dark meant anything to him, but it would help shield him from her human vision.
Her footsteps get slower the closer they get to the top of the stairs and Eddie smiles to himself. Now she was starting to get nervous. He licks his lips and cocks his head to the side as he waits for her to get to the door.
The door creaks open and if Eddie had the ability to have breath, it would have caught in his chest. He stares and blinks his eyes a few times, sure his sight is playing a trick on him. No one could be that beautiful. But his better-than-perfect vision was always right, and there she was. It figures, right? His dream girl walks into his life after it’s already over.
The girl lets out another cough as she takes her first few steps into the attic. Eddie’s eyes don’t miss a thing. The way she reaches up to push some hair behind her ear. How she sweeps her flashlight back and forth across the attic, eyes searching hungrily. What she was looking for, Eddie couldn’t guess.
She walks into the middle of the attic and spins in place, taking in all the angles around her. A smile appears on her lips and Eddie’s sure he’s never seen anything so pretty. While alive or dead. It confuses him though, her sudden happiness here in the dark and dirty attic.
           “I know you’re here.”
Eddie startles. He can’t remember the last time someone’s managed to startle him. She’s talking too quietly to be meant for her friends, whose steps and heartbeats let him know were still on the first floor. He leans in towards the girl, stretching himself to be closer to her. This close, he can feel the heat radiating from her body.
“Don’t ask me how I know, because I don’t even know,” she says. “But I know someone is here. Not a person.”
“But not a ghost,” Eddie answers.
She spins around suddenly, flashlight searching all the dark corner for where the sound came from. Eddie smiles and rests back against the sloped ceiling. She’s looking nowhere close to where he actually is.
“I never said a ghost,” she says. Her heartbeat is now the fastest it’s been all night, but it’s still not as fast as her friends’. Eddie would wager it’s more from excitement than fear.
“Then what do you think I am?” Eddie asks.
The girl swallows and Eddie can see the veins in her neck throbbing, causing him to sink his fangs into his own bottom lip.
           “Right now? Just a voice.”
Eddie can’t help but laugh at her answer. She smiles at his laugh, and it makes the grin on his own face grow. When’s the last time he’s actually spoken with anyone?
“You’re braver than your friends,” Eddie says.
“Always have been,” she says. Her eyes are still roaming all around the attic, eyes even scanning over the dark corner he’s hiding in without seeing him.
“That doesn’t surprise me,” he says.
           “Where are you?”
Eddie debates with himself. Sure, she’s not afraid right now. But what if he shows himself and it terrifies her? Something tells Eddie that won’t happen, but he isn’t sure his dead heart can take the risk.
“Hiding,” he says. “You’ve looked right past me a few times now.”
She chuckles and shrugs her shoulders. “You wouldn’t be the first person to tell me I should get my eyes checked.”
The grin on Eddie’s face makes his cheeks ache. He hardly ever smiles, let alone has this euphoric grin spread across his lips.
“You could get them checked all you like; you’ll never have vision like mine.”
“Are you invisible?” she asks, and it makes him snort a laugh.
“No,” he says. “Just hiding from you.”
           “Why?” she asks.
“I don’t want to scare you,” he says, honestly.
She frowns and ceases looking around the room. Eddie’s instinct is to make it better. To say something that will wipe away the frown and put the smile back on her pretty face.
“You said I was brave. Now you’re afraid I’ll be scared?” she asks.
“Even the bravest people have things that scare them,” Eddie says.
“What scares you?” she asks, surprising Eddie yet again.
His brow furrows as he thinks about it. He never thought about being afraid of anything anymore. It didn’t seem like he had to, held up here in the same house for years.
“I don’t know,” he answers honestly.
“You’re afraid of scaring me,” she points out. “That’s a silly fear.”
“Is it?” Eddie asks, eyebrows raising. “You know, there’s a fine line between bravery and stupidity.”
“You wouldn’t be the first person to tell me I’m stupid either,” she says with a shrug.
“You don’t seem stupid to me. Stubborn? Yes. Brave? Definitely. Maybe too much so. But not dumb or stupid.”
           “Can I see you? Please?”
Eddie squeezes his eyes shut and bites his lip. He wants nothing more than to give in to her request. He feels like he’d give her anything she wanted. But he’s enjoying this conversation, and he doesn’t want it to end if he scares her off.
“I don’t think you know what you’re asking,” Eddie says.
“I’m asking to see you. At this point, you can’t look worse than what I’m imagining.”
“I’m intrigued,” Eddie says. He adjusts himself so he’s sitting down on the beam, and he leans forward, elbows resting on his knees.
“I’m imagining scales and horns and warts. Or blue skin with all black eyes and eight arms.”
“I’m not a spider,” Eddie answers with a laugh.
           “Well, I wouldn’t know that, would I?”
“You’re really not afraid,” Eddie says to himself, more than her.
           “Nope.”
Eddie lets out a sigh, an expression of frustration rather than an outtake of breath. He slides off the beam, landing silently on his feet. His jeans have holes, and his black t-shirt is covered in dirt. He tries to wipe some of the dirt off without much success.
           “To your right,” Eddie says.
She turns, flashlight bouncing in and out of the dark corners. Eddie steps forward out of the shadows, and into the beam of her light.
Her eyes widen as she stares at him, and Eddie metaphorically holds his breath. She takes a few steps closer, and Eddie pays special attention to her heartbeat. It ticked up a little, but it didn’t spike. He watches as she takes in his hair, her eyes following individual curls falling down his forehead. She takes in the clothes, only slightly dustier than her own. Her eyes scan his face and her pulse beats quicker.
“You’re…” She trails off, a million endings to that thought flashing through Eddie’s head. Terrifying? Dead? Evil? Pale as fuck? “Beautiful,” she finishes. Pink floods her cheeks as she stares at him, and Eddie mentally tells himself not to think about the blood rushing to her face.
“Well, damn, Sweetheart,” Eddie says. He sticks his hands in his jean pockets and takes a few steps closer to her. “First time I’ve ever been called that.”
“I highly doubt that,” she replies instantly.
He grins, careful not to show teeth, and shakes his head at her. “You’re something else.”
“So I’ve been told,” she says with a shy smile.
“Hey!” A male voice shouts up the stairs. The girl jumps and Eddie laughs at that being what scared her. “You okay up there?”
“Fine, Steve,” she shouts back down the stairs.
“Steve your boyfriend?” Eddie asks, head nodding towards the stairs.
She lets out a snort and shakes her head. “No, definitely not.”
“What about the other guy? Or one of the girls?” Eddie asks. He tells himself he should shut up. Why is he even asking you this? It can’t matter to him. But it does.
“Nope,” she answers him. “All on my own.”
“No, I’m all on my own,” Eddie says with a laugh. “You’re just single.”
“Why are you alone?” she asks, her brow pinching in concern.
“I don’t really fit in with…everyone else,” he says.
She takes a few steps closer to him, so they’re arm’s length apart. With the hand that’s not holding the flashlight, she reaches forward and holds her hand out to Eddie, palm upwards and open. He stares down at her soft, warm skin and wants nothing more than to slide his cold, hard fingers into hers.
“I can’t,” he says. His voice came out rougher than he intended, and the way she frowns tells him that she heard the sadness in his voice.
           “Why?”
“You ask a lot of questions, you know,” Eddie says with a smirk.
“How else am I supposed to learn about you?”
Eddie swears his heart flutters in his chest, knowing that it’s physically impossible.
“Why do you want to learn about me?” he asks.
“Now who’s asking questions?” Her smirk makes Eddie laugh, and he realizes too late that he lets his teeth show. She’s as observant as he expected.
           “Vampire?”
There’s no fear in the question. No anger, no malice, just pure curiosity. Her eyes are wide as she looks at him, open and awaiting his answer. Eddie can’t believe she asked so casually and calmly. This was truly the surprise of his lifetime. Alive or undead.
“You’re smart,” Eddie says. He has trouble meeting her eyes, but she moves her head around to catch his gaze.
“Hey, look at me.”
Eddie steels his spine and looks her in the eye. She’s smiling and it’s the first time Eddie’s ever truly revolted against the idea that he wasn’t fully alive.
“So, are you more like Edward or Dracula?”
The question makes Eddie burst out in laughter. It makes the girl’s grin widen and it’s the first time Eddie really relaxes around her.
“Somewhere in between,” Eddie answers while still laughing. “I don’t sparkle or burn.”
“So, you’ve read Twilight,” she remarks.
“Do you think I have a whole lot to do in this place?” Eddie asks with a shrug. “I’ve always been a fantasy nerd so of course I’ve kept up with the books these days.”
“These days, huh?” she asks, tilting her head. “How old are you?”
“Am I supposed to say seventeen? And that I’ve been seventeen a while?” He smirks at her, and the blush returns to her cheeks.
“Team Edward, are we?” she asks.
“Well, duh. Like I’m going to pick the werewolf over the vampire,” he says. He looks at her face for a few moments before answering her question. “Nineteen. Been nineteen for around thirty years now.”
“Hmm, 80’s,” she hums. “The clothes make more sense now.”
Eddie scoffs and looks down at his jeans and t-shirt. “What’s wrong with them? You’re wearing jeans, too. And a t-shirt!”
“Yeah, but mine aren’t acid wash,” she says through a laugh.
Eddie narrows his eyes at her, which makes her laugh even harder. She goes to reach for his hand, as if out of instinct, and Eddie is surprised when he allows himself to stay still so she can. Her hand only jumps slightly at the cool temperature. She looks down at their joined hands as she threads their fingers together.
“So, you don’t burn?” she asks as she holds onto his hand, as if it was the most casual and comfortable thing in the world.
“No more than you do. Just feels like a bad sunburn, only I don’t turn red,” he says.
“Y/n?” a voice calls up the stairs.
Eddie repeats the name to himself and smiles. Suddenly, it’s the prettiest word he’s ever heard.
“Yeah?” she calls back.
“Robin’s freaked. We’re leaving!”
“Be right there, Nancy!”
She frowns and holds on to Eddie’s hand tighter.
“Y/n?” Eddie says. “I like it. A lot. I’m Eddie.”
She bursts into giggles, and he raises an eyebrow at her.
“Eddie?” she asks.
“Yeah. What?”
“Is your full name Edward?” She looks like she’s going to combust from laughter and Eddie rolls his eyes.
“Jesus Christ. Yeah, that’s my full name. You’re allowed three Twilight jokes ever, then that’s it.”
“Ever?” she asks with a smirk. “Does that mean I’m allowed to come back and see you?”
The hopeful lilt of her voice sparks a joy through Eddie that he didn’t know possible.
“I really hope you do,” Eddie tells her sincerely.
“I will.” The resolute tone of her voice makes Eddie smile, and he swears he’d blush if he could.
“I look forward to it.” Eddie bends down and presses his cold lips to the back of her hand. He feels her pulse jump beneath his lips and as strong as the urge for blood is that comes over him, the urge to keep her safe is infinitely stronger.
“Your lips are softer than I thought.”
Eddie smirks and her face burns bright red. She clearly hadn’t let the words filter through her mind before they came out. But Eddie didn’t care. The fact that she was thinking of his lips at all made him the happiest undead guy in Hawkins.

Barking Harker Cast Snapshot 5: Bridal Party
Tumblr media
In the moonlight opposite me were three young women, ladies by their dress and manner. I thought at the time that I must be dreaming when I saw them, for, though the moonlight was behind them, they threw no shadow on the floor. […] All three had brilliant white teeth that shone like pearls against the ruby of their voluptuous lips. There was something about them that made me uneasy, some longing and at the same time some deadly fear. I felt in my heart a wicked, burning desire that they would kiss me with those red lips.
[…]
The fair girl, with a laugh of ribald coquetry, turned to answer him:—
"You yourself never loved; you never love!" On this the other women joined, and such a mirthless, hard, soulless laughter rang through the room that it almost made me faint to hear; it seemed like the pleasure of fiends. Then the Count turned, after looking at my face attentively, and said in a soft whisper:—
"Yes, I too can love; you yourselves can tell it from the past. Is it not so? Well, now I promise you that when I am done with him you shall kiss him at your will. Now go! go! I must awaken him, for there is work to be done."
[…]
"Back, back, to your own place! Your time is not yet come. Wait! Have patience! To-night is mine. To-morrow night is yours!" There was a low, sweet ripple of laughter, and in a rage I threw open the door, and saw without the three terrible women licking their lips. As I appeared they all joined in a horrible laugh, and ran away. —Jonathan Harker, the Brides, Dracula, Dracula
Brides and Furies, death and maidens. So little is said of these three, so little known beyond their beauty, their laughter, and the veal-lovers’ taste for young meals. All this they have to their character, alongside the singular hobby of circling the new pet delivered from England. Selfishly kept out of reach for two long and callous months before they were handed the leash and the duties it was to come with.
Oh, yes, there had been chores to mind while the ancient cad ran off to lay roots across the Channel. Take your kisses, my loves, take your turns, but take care—he is not to leave the castle. You know what he is meant for upon his return. Yes, yes, yes, they know.
Though it is one thing to know and another to care. Or love.
They still know the difference, even after all this time. If love lives at all in the great grim fortress in the mountains, it lives amongst themselves. It lives in the young man too. Brilliant and burning as a star. So ripe and sweet they can nearly taste it in his veins.
If nothing else, the Count can be trusted to collect those who love and are loved. He is a needy and covetous old thing, so giddy in his preferences, like a spoiled child snatching away the sole favorite toy from a crowd of urchins. A spoiled child who orders his toys to adore him. Smile for him, loves. Fear for him. Dress fine, drink deep, fill the centuries so he is not a warlord ruling over empty chambers of stone and heart. Do as you’re told, even as the years dull his grip down from a crushing chain to the gossamer of puppet strings.
He is watching through your eyes. Hearing through your ears.
Be wary, my loves.
(Sound advice for everyone in Castle Dracula.)
