Not a real Christian

I’m a practicing Catholic. As in I’m going to keep practicing until I get it right.

But I’m not a real Christian – at least according to the people who thoughtfully send me “You can’t be a Christian if…” and “You can’t be a Christian unless…” messages and memes.

I’m also a permanent deacon.

But I’m not a real Catholic – at least according to the people who thoughtfully send me “You can’t be a Catholic if…” and “You can’t be a Catholic unless…” messages and memes.

Why? Well, I’m just not living up to their expectations.

I wasn’t baptized by immersion (we couldn’t afford the water bill), I believe that Christ is really present in the Eucharist, and I confess my sins to a priest.

Which means I’m not a real Christian to them.

I don’t say hateful things about people who disagree with what they say the Church believes and/or who don’t perfectly live every aspect of Catholic teaching every moment of their lives.

Which means I’m not a real Catholic to them.

Truth be told, I don’t perfectly live every aspect of Catholic teaching every moment of my life. Which would be why I have sins to confess.

None of this bothers me. Because I’m not worried about what “they” want.

In the end, there’s only one opinion that matters – God’s.

As it turns out, what God wants has nothing to do with any of that “You can’t be a Christian if…” and “You can’t be a Catholic unless…” stuff.

What does God really want? The answer is in today’s first reading.

And it has nothing to do with purity tests. Or perfect performance. Or arguing about which sin is worse (reality check – anything that can come between you and God will do the job).

“What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”

It’s short. It’s simple. And it’s the work of a lifetime.

I know I’m going to stumble and fall. I’ve got a history with God.

But God always picks me up when I do. God’s got a history with me.

That’s where I’m headed.

obviously i enjoy cute happy cathartic chainshipping stuff but personally. to me. one of the reasons its so compelling is that they are two deeply incompatible people, trying to cling to each other anyway.

Lawrence, with his need for control and order, who was devoted enough to his family he was willing to cut off his own foot to try and save them, and Adam, who seemingly has no real direction in life, who cut off his parents for an unknown reason and who, in the original script anyway, was shown to be passively suicidal. a surgeon who has friends that are lawyers, and a freelance photographer who has friends like fucking Scott Tibbs.

they cannot be more different from each other. they're like puzzle pieces that don't fit, but by god are they going to try and force them together anyway because if they don't they'll lose the only other person in the world who understands what happened to them in that bathroom. and they can't afford to lose that they need that. they need the reassurance that what happened to them was real and that they made the right decisions and that they're okay now.

sometimes i think about pomelos and how they are related to the grape fruit but are not quite a grapefruit. Because it is a pomelo. i do not like grape fruit. Its bitter and stringy and its just not a pomelo. a pomelo, while bitter, is softer to the tongue and carries a sweetness. but they are related. they’re very similar but theyre also different. but because they’re different — they don’t always have them at my local grocery store. so i buy grapefruit and even though its my fifth time trying it, i still don’t like it. every time i try i think i will because the pomelo and grapefruit are related, don’t you see? i tried pomelo once and fell in love many times from start to finish and to start again and i will look for pomelo for a sixth time in grapefruit because i love pomelo
