please write your reader insert however you want to. unabashedly!! write fat reader. black reader. asexual. masculine. tall. trans. disabled. you’re allowed to see yourself reflected in these spaces!!! sometimes your fic won’t be for everyone—it will be for all the people who look, think, love and experience life the way you do and that’s ok! it’s wonderful, actually.
it is not your job to make sure the shoe comfortably fits every single person out there. your only job is to tag it, and if anyone tells you otherwise I’ll personally come out swinging lol

Travis Dermott knew that he would draw attention with his actions in the Coyotes’ home opener against the Anaheim Ducks at Mullett Arena on Saturday. The Arizona defenseman just hoped that the spotlight might shine on the issue that he was addressing, not on him.
“You don’t really want to go against rules that are put in place by your employer, but there’s some people who took some positive things from it,” Dermott said. “That’s kind of what I’m looking to impact.
“You want to have everyone feel included and that’s something that I have felt passionate about for a long time in my career. It’s not like I just just jumped on this train. It’s something that I’ve felt has been lacking in the hockey community for a while. I feel like we need supporters of a movement like this; to have everyone feel included and really to beat home the idea that hockey is for everyone.”
“I won’t lie,” said Dermott, who is playing on a one-year, two-way contract. “From the outside, it’s easy to see that I’m putting my career on the line for something. I definitely went through some emotional ups and downs that night, not regretting anything by any means, but I’d love to have maybe done a couple of steps a little different by making sure that everyone was aware of what was going on before I did it.
“I don’t want to put my teammates or my coaches or my GMs or the equipment managers in any kind of bad light when it’s their job to kind of look out for something like this happening. It was definitely something that I did just by myself and was prepared to kind of deal with whatever repercussions the league decides to push towards that. I’m not going to back off and say that this battle is won, but we’re going to find better ways to do it.”
As Dermott noted, LGBTQ+ inclusion is an issue that he has supported for a long time. Without getting into specifics, Dermott said the issue is personal for him because it impacts people close to him.
“I’d be lying if I said I haven’t shed tears about this on multiple occasions,” he said. “So yeah, it’s something I’m definitely very passionate about.
“I’ve met a lot of people that from the outside, it looks like they have everything going right in their life and they have a smile on their face every time they talk to you. But sometimes when we get closer to people and get comfortable enough for them to open up to you, you can see that there’s some pretty dark stuff happening to some good people. It doesn’t take too many times encountering something like that for it to really change someone.
“I’ve been blessed to have some of those opportunities put in front of me to really change my view of what being a good person means; what being a good father and a good example and role model means going forward. You really see how people are hurting and it’s because of a system that maybe no one’s intentionally trying to be malicious about, but until you’ve really had that first-person experience seeing people hurting from it right in front of you, it’s tough to kind of take steps.”
It would be a surprise if the league handed down any sort of punishment. The optics alone would add to the public relations damage that the original ban created. Even so, Dermott reiterated his desire to bring the entire franchise into the fold before he takes similar actions in the future, but he also made it clear that he will not be silenced on the topic.
“It’s not like I’m shutting up and going away,” he said. “I know more questions are going to be coming. We’re just going to be as prepared as we can be to just spread love. That’s the thing. It’s gay pride that we’re talking about, but it could be men’s health. It could be any war. It’s just wanting world peace. Everyone’s got to love each other a little bit more.
“Like my parents said growing up, ‘How awesome would it be to be the guy that people look up to?’ That’s what really hit home when I was a kid, especially from my mom. You want to grow up and be that guy. You want to be the guy that’s having the impact on kids like NHL players had on you. If they had been racist or bigoted, that’s going to have an effect on you.
“With how many eyes are on us, especially with the young kids coming up in the new generation, you want to put as much positive love into their brain as you can. You want them to see that it’s not just being taught or coming from maybe their parents at home. They need to see it in the public eye for it to really make an effect.”

Monday of Appreciation: Part 100
Hello everyone, Smite here!
Tumblr media
100
Let's celebrate this big number and even bigger achievement with a massive a mount of stories that I have compiled over a bunch of weeks now. 10 in total by 9 writers including all kinds of idols (most are meta, sorrry (not sorry)).
However, first off, I want to say thank you to the interest in support this series has gathered. Thank you all very much for liking and reblogging and sometimes even commenting, it means the world to me. Most of the times, I regard this series as a big success.
I need to say it again though that this is the final regular MoA post. For 100 weeks straight I have gathered between 3 and 11 stories from our community, the only reason/motivation being: Appreciation to those that I really like and want to support. Sadly sometimes, MoA has been seen as something like an seal of approval or rather the "not-inclusion" as a seal of disapproval. This has never been the case or my intention.
With that said, MoA is not dead and will never be dead until I'm dead. New parts will randomly pop up and I will gush over another way idol X has been... written. Until then, stay awesome and feel free to go back to the older parts of this series.
These are the final 10 stories on the regular series of Monday of Appreciation:
-1-
@gangplanksorenji: Do you think you are forgiven? ft. Sakura
Reading smut like this and knowing it was written by Orenji of all people still makes my mind boggle. This is unfiltered smut, set up perfectly (especially with the homage to LSFM's latest comeback). All in all great, especially with the non-focus then back-focus on Sakura.
-2-
@coldfanbou: Culmination ft. Somi
This fic is the finale of the ultimate Somi-bimbo-self-sex-slave series. No, I'm serious, you couldn't go further if you wanted to. It also explains why OC is so hesitant to go after her. Also, NTR, but it's so over the top that it kinda flew under my radar. Somi's hotness is melting our minds, isn't it.
-3-
@lustspren: California Love ft. Soyeon, Minnie
The first time I saw these outfits, I kneeeew someone HAD to write a fic about them, either idol x idol or include an OC and oh boy, lustspren delivered. This has quite the excessive set up, all edging leading up to that hotel room scene that does it all justice. To say it with the words of Mister Smith: "That's hot."
-4-
@smuttysabina: Owning Aespa: Chapter 1 ft. aespa
Exquisite! Charming, funny and utterly drenched in lewdness while also shoving absurdity in your face the entire time. This perfectly encapsulates @smuttysabina's writing style. It's blunt yet still a bit teasing and I like how the descriptiveness is subtle enough to keep you on edge. Literally.
-5-
@ggidolsmuts: Xiaoting's Shouting ft. Xiaoting
This fic has a chinese version and though I cannot speak of the quality of that version, this one definitely has it. One of the many, many great stories you can find in Ddeun's masterlist. Damn, now I can't decide if I want an obedient plaything Xiaoting or a demanding loud Xiaoting (haha, Xiaothing or Loudting (I'm so funny (right?)))
-6-
@tothosewhoyearnforit: A Million Dollars ft. Karina
Ah, the great switch life. Though you might not have a million dollars (sadge), the ability to switch around your behavior to accommodate to your partners wants and needs in the moment... man that is everything. Okay, no, someone incredible hot like Karina, now that is everything. Just like the OC in the next story, I'd pay more than a million to get Karina.
-7-
@smuttysabina: Owning Aespa: Chapter 2 ft. Karina
Oh, look! It's the second chapter to the story we already had! This time we get the bouncy girl in the shower as she bravely strikes a deal with us. Will she succeed though? You better find out yourselves (no really, this will be in the test tomorrow).
-8-
@existslikepristin: Sowon's gig ft. Sowon
Sorry, ELP, I had to put a name on this hilarious mess of a fic. Maybe it does not really deserve a name, but I'm all for it to get one. Hell, even my name is terrible (at least it does not spoil the twist). So yeah, if y'all have like 29,4 seconds on your hand, this is the stuff for you. Damn, why do I love your writing so much?
-9-
@okaylikesmomo: Chapter 4: Sauna ft. Chaewon, Kazuha, Sakura
I love how unhinged this is if you ignore all the context and previous chapters. It makes me think if my multi-chapter series' feel this crazy if one just starts in the middle. Crazy or not, sex sex sex. Although it is okay (writing) sex, neither the writing nor the sex are just 'okay'. LSFM really is that hot and makes us crave for more steamy sex sex sex. What a mess (-.-).
-10-
@iznsfw: Above the law, (under you) ft. Tzuyu
What else can I say except: IZ GOAT?! I guess so, every angle, idea, set up and kink this incredible qt has written has worked flawlessly. I rule that you are guilty of being way too fucking good at this and sentence you to write more sentences to make your sentence longer so more sentences lead to new masterpieces. Please.
Tumblr media
Guys, that's it. With a final bow the curtains fall. Until next time. Ciao!

Hi! Hope this is the right place to request, sorry if it isn’t. I was wondering if you could write a Routledge!hippie!fem! Reader x overprotective!JJ? Some suggestive fluff with a happy ending if that’s okay☹️ I absolutely LOVE ur work btw!!🩷
Reader is referred to as John B’s sister but she’s not described and is only a half sibling so anyone can read! I want to fulfill requests but it’s also important to me that I do what I can to make my fics inclusive 🫶
Peace & Love (JJ Maybank x Reader)
Tumblr media
Every time JJ caught himself looking at you a little too long, he immediately felt John B’s eyes land on him. He had never mentioned it out loud, but JJ figured his friend knew he had a crush on you.
It wouldn’t have been a big deal if you weren’t John B’s little sister.
You weren’t actually that much younger than him, only a few months. Apparently Big John got around more than people realized, and after he pissed both John B’s and your mom off, he was left with the both of you.
It never seemed to cause any problems with you and John B, surprisingly. JJ sometimes wondered how that was possible, but John B took pride in being an older brother and you weren’t exactly the resentful type.
In fact, JJ was fairly certain you didn’t have a negative bone in your body. It was one of the many things he liked about you.
Your whole existence screamed peace and love, and all your friends (JJ included) joked that you were a hippie stereotype. It never bothered you, probably because you knew how badly the group needed someone who could remain calm and make everyone smile.
“I got something on my face or do you just think I’m pretty?” you asked suddenly.
It took JJ a moment to realize you were looking right at him, brows raised. Not long after that he realized he’d been staring again while lost in his thoughts.
You all were at a beach party, sitting around a bonfire. Other people were milling around all of him and his friends, but JJ wouldn’t have been any the wiser to their presence. He’d pretty much forgotten all about them, actually.
He flirted with you all the time, but this caught him off guard. If it had been just the two of you JJ would’ve been sincere and told you yes, he did think you were pretty. He’d been wanting to say something along those lines for a while, to test the waters.
But he felt the pressure of the others eyeing him—especially John B—and made some lame comment about not recognizing your headband and asked if it was new.
“Nah, man, I’ve had this one for a while,” you replied, subconsciously adjusting it.
John B looked at him as if to say, “really, dude?”, but you were too carefree to be suspicious.
Kiara laughed. “You probably haven’t seen it in a while ‘cause she has about a thousand.”
“So what? I like them,” you defended lightly. JJ watched a little too closely as you lifted your cup to your lips, but it was empty. “I need a refill,” you realized, standing.
JJ almost jumped to follow you, but he was still getting stared at. You disappeared out of his view through random bodies and he felt himself deflate.
“Seriously?” John B said, raising a brow at him. “You expect me to think you were looking at her headband?”
JJ felt like a spotlight was on him. Usually he didn’t mind, but this was a little more different. John B didn’t sound mad, but he wouldn’t have been surprised if his friend had told him to back off.
“If you like her, just say something,” John B continued, much to JJ’s surprise. His eyebrows even shot up while his best friend laughed. “Don’t look so shocked.”
“Yeah, dude, you’re super obvious,” Pope chimed in from off to the side.
JJ glanced at him and saw amusement before focusing back on John B.
“You’re so not pissed?”
John B laughed again. “Why would I be? I know you, man. And I trust you. So if she likes you back then… I mean, I’ll still have to have a talk with you, but you have my blessing.”
JJ let himself laugh at the phrasing. He stood, confidence building. “Since I have your blessing,” he started sarcastically. “I’m gonna go find her.”
That’s exactly what he did, maneuvering through the crowd, eyes searching for you excitedly.
When JJ spotted you, jealousy descended upon him. You were near the keg, filling up your cup, talking to some guy.
As he headed for you, that feeling morphed into protectiveness when he saw you try to walk away from the guy and he grabbed your arm.
“Hey! Let go of her, man,” JJ intervened, shoving himself between you and the guy.
“Who the hell are you?” the guy slurred out, face scrunching up in annoyance.
“The guy who’s gonna kick your ass if you don’t walk away,” JJ warned, squaring his shoulders. The guy hesitated for a moment, looking him up and down. Then, he turned and walked away exactly as he’d been told. “That’s what I thought.”
“Damn, JJ,” you said, sounding almost impressed.
He turned to face you and calmed down immediately when he saw you. “You alright?”
“Yeah, dude just couldn’t handle hearing “no”,” you relayed with a shake of your head. A small smirk tugged at your lips. “I guess I should say thanks for coming to my rescue.”
“You don’t gotta thank me.” JJ shrugged, attempting to be modest. “I’m always gonna look out for you.”
He was being sincere, and the smile you wore was appreciative.
“Noted,” you said before a more teasing smile crept onto your face. “So… you coming to ask about my headband again?”
JJ laughed in spite of himself. He scratched the back of his head. “Yeah… that was kinda lame, wasn’t it?”
“Maybe.” You shrugged. “But you’re cute, so it’s okay.”
Was he blushing? JJ wasn’t sure. He flirted with you all the time, but this was new territory because of what he was about to say.
“That’s good to know, ‘cause I actually came to ask you out… so, do you have plans tomorrow?”
“Well, I guess I do now,” you replied, your smile that JJ absolutely loved growing wider. “Although, I hope you ran it by my brother first.”

Sharing my thoughts about the negative take from that H*BE stylist about LWA because I need to put them somewhere, so forgive me for this post. For context, the stylist said that the MV is using disabilities and those who face discrimination as inspirational material and that they’re “romanticizing disabilities”, and while I can genuinely understand what they were trying to advocate for, their take also completely ignores massive elements of the MV as a whole, whilst also making grand assumptions about the artists (Tae and IU) that they cannot possibly know.
Listen, everyone has the right to interpret any piece of content how they see it and they’re also entitled to feel how they feel and share their opinions, but it becomes problematic when they start making baseless assumptions along with the point they’re trying to make. Claiming that IU and Tae are rich cishets with no disabilities(implying that they are privileged and not discriminated against) is such a WILD assumption to make (let’s not forget that IU does actually have a hearing impairment).
I do think that there should be conversations about who should be able to tell what stories or portray what character, especially in huge projects in mainstream media, but there has to be room for flexibility. Are we going to require people to reveal everything single thing about themselves in order to prove that they can represent a specific demographic fairly? That’s a completely unreasonable expectation, and in some circumstances, it could literally be unsafe. And their assumptions do not contribute to a constructive dialogue about this topic at all.
Not only that, but their critique sort of implies that the MV equates having disabilities to being a victim, but that isn’t what I personally got from the MV. Their characters literally fight until the very end, in their blind and deaf/mute states, and are never actually shown as weak. And it’s just another assumption that the “love filter” takes away their disabilities, when in reality, IU still uses sign language even when Tae is looking at her through the camcorder – what is shown is a world where they don’t have their injuries anymore (injuries that were sustained in this dystopian world) and their lives are more than just fear and running. The concept of “love wins all” is that they made it to the very end of the world together and are ultimately taken out by the shittiness of this world that they’re living in – not by their disabilities.
The stylist also goes on to imply that the ambiguity of the MV is an issue because they end up wearing traditional hetero outfits (since when is sexuality linked to pieces of clothing?), and if it were meant to mean something to the queer community, they wouldn’t have included that. Which makes no sense because that’s the beauty of art – it’s meant to be interpreted however the viewer sees it, and so many people in the queer community did actually take comfort in the symbolism they interpreted from the MV.
To be honest, I can’t help but question the motive of their rant, because from where I’m standing, this person works for a billion dollar company that literally capitalizes on using the queer community for good sales (fanservice, etc)(mind you, this is only one of H*BE’s many offenses) so their issues with this metaphorical MV seem to be a bit selective (aka taking issue with things that don’t affect their livelihood). Also gonna add that they literally have posts supporting Zionists (who raised money specifically for the IDF), so it really seems like selective activism atp.
Tae and IU have both consistently shown that they are massive advocates of inclusivity and equality, so to be accused of exploiting minorities and their struggles is actually so upsetting. People can label it whatever they want, but IU’s decision to change the title of the song was not about “saving face”, it was showing empathy for a minority when she learned that they were bothered by the original title. And for this person to insinuate that Tae and IU are tone deaf and clueless to the strife of those who have been discriminated against is just plain disrespectful and such a projection based on their own personal interpretation and assumptions.
Anyway, sorry for this long-winded post. There’s never a day of peace and I am siiiiick of it.

The idea behind a boycott truly seems lost on some. Percy Jackson and the Olympians was watched 13.3 million times since it's release, what, a couple days ago? It's on Disney+ aka the Pressure list on BDS, the author wrote a stupid blog post after 10/7 saying there are "two sides" to the issue, and many people who worked on the show are Zionists. What happened to the good ol' days of pirating? It's all Free Palestine until a show you want drops, huh? And from an author who has never written Arab/Muslim characters well.
I was reading a post on X recently about how someone had to tell her friends to boycott Starbucks because they didn't know it was one of the major companies that so many creators decided to start with because they were the most direct and influential (alongside McD's and Disney). Her friends were happy to do so, it's just they were 'unaware.'
This person also argued that unless you're "chronically online," you wouldn't know about what is happening, and depending on the media you are consuming (especially if it's mainstream western sources because we know they weave a VERY and vastly different story about what is happening in Palestine). I can understand a fraction of what she is saying, while at the same time I think this automatically reveals the willful ignorance that permeates our societies. How so many people can 'turn off,' and not engage or at least not know about what is going on across the globe based on many factors (which includes their governments and censorship -like in Canada it's hard to access videos on the ground in Palestine on Instagram unless you see it on X or Facebook or use a VPN, otherwise we/I can't access Eyes on Palestine on Instagram), is all very confounding to me. Because even without being 'online,' I do believe it's our responsibility to know, at bare minimum, what is happening.
I think at the crux of this (and these are just my opinions of course) is that many people in the global north, firstly, don't want to unpack their complicity in imperialistic and colonialist structures of violence in the global south because of their degree of consumerism (how the systems set up -and how so much of how we live depends on the mass hyper-exploitation of people 'elsewhere' where 'we don't have to see.'). So that in itself is something I think of when I see that there are people who either refuse to boycott big tech or industries that align or support genocidal regimes and powers, extensively so -because that would mean getting uncomfortable, being reflexive, demanding changes from these despicable companies (like refusing to buy from them until the are ethical and sustainable beyond paper), and overall changing your habits. And I don't mean shaming working class/poor people to stop shopping at major conglomerates to buy their groceries because that's not fair -not everyone can afford to buy local and go to farmer's markets. I'm talking about the excessive aspects of capitalism. Or watching/viewing content from places like Disney because they have the privilege to 'look away.'
We all know that if no one consumed a damn thing from these companies, that they'd change their tune very quickly, and it's just frustrating and beyond tragic to see Disney thrive despite how evil that corporation is, and only recently became 'inclusive,' but even so there's many stories and voices they leave out, or don't do justice. I hear you. I know what you mean, and seeing it is disappointing. Because even if you wanted to see those fucking films or series -yes there are OTHER means, but the fact that people will pay to see it and subscribe to it is just frustrating.
As always, boycott Disney.

I can understand ppl not liking stains character (not me tho, love that guy 😌 i too, love and wax poetic about toshi), but im actually surprised that so many people are mad about not only the impact but also the importance of stain in toshinori's arc.. like, idk im sure i fail to pick up on some things as i read the manga, but it makes perfect sense why stain would take on such an important role in saving and helping toshi (in more ways than one). But maybe im just biased ?? Anyway, something something they hate him for being a slut and all the killings something something
Yeah, what gets me is that post was clearly talking about the people who were directly involved in Toshi's arc about choosing to live and the OP included Bakugo bc he's clearly being set up as the coup de grâce/grand finale to that arc about living. Stain's inclusion as a direct participant in that arc was also obvious-- like, "why is a self-righteous killer being included in Toshi's arc but not my favorite student character?? this is proof that the writing is bad!" is such a wild argument imho, bc it's so obvious to me that Toshi needed to develop a relationship with a villain chara entirely because of this:
Tumblr media
"If you think of him as anything more than a villain--" the entirety of Act 2 exists to challenge this mindset, and Act 3 exists to defeat it. Stain plays a crucial role beyond just helping convince Toshi to live and fight for his own (and everyone else's) right to keep living--Toshi's heart is able to heal specifically because he doesn't dismiss Stain or think of him as "nothing more than a villain." His meeting with Stain triggers a subtle but needed change in how Toshi views villains:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Calling Stain's contribution to the final act "pointless" ignores the heart of this story and why Toshinori SPECIFICALLY needed Stain SPECIFICALLY as a catalyst for a certain SPECIFIC change, and it ignores what that change actually means for the greater narrative-- again, people tend to severely underestimate how important Tomura and Toshinori actually are to each other's respective arcs, and those arcs are now converging. Like, I don't want to see ppl feigning surprise when their arcs finally overlap with each other, lmao.
Side note, but Stain being a central catalyst character for both Toshi and Tomura + also being the trigger for Tomura doubling down on his villainy + ALSO being one of the many key triggers that will likely lead to Tomura's salvation feels.... bizarrely fitting?? Without Stain, Tomura never seeks out Izuku at the mall, never meets Toga + Touya + Spinner (ESPECIALLY SPINNER), and remains forever at odds with Toshi due to both men remaining stuck in their respective hero/villain roles and being utterly unable to truly *SEE* each other outside those roles. Stain is literally a load bearing wall lmao ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bkgo going from "stock bully" to someone who practically has to beg Toshinori and Izuku to take their fucking Lexapro while tears stream down his face is the funniest direction his character arc could have taken, but it’s also the best direction it could've taken.
↑ In Bakugo's case, it's obvious why he has a role in Toshinori's arc about living and it's completely fair to include him in a list of people who are most important and influential to that particular arc. There's no need for explanation and no question about what his role in the upcoming chapters will be.
Also I keep seeing people say that the suicide move was meant to be Toshi's homage to Bakugo when, like... it very clearly wasn't. 💀💀💀 Like, Bakugo does have a right to be upset that Toshi was planning to kill himself just to buy them all a few extra seconds of time against AFO-- but I feel like people kind of....?? Don't understand Bakugo's character development if they seriously think he would yell at or guilt-trip Toshi about it. He didn't yell at Izuku when Izuku hit rock bottom, and he knows that Izuku and Toshi suffer from the same feelings of worthlessness and lack of regard for themselves better than anyone. - - - - - - - - - -
Anyway, I think the real root of the issue is actually less about Stain and more so that people are just mad about All Might lmao. One quarter of the fandom thinks he should've died in Kamino, another quarter thinks he should just die now, another quarter thinks that Iron Might is character assassination, a chunk of folks just don't care, and whatever's left over is the handful of old man enthusiasts who think that it's truly lovely (myself included)-- Iron Might is fully intended to be a love letter to everything Toshinori loves and wants to protect, himself included. Criticize it if you like, but if you can't at least acknowledge that much, then something in your heart is dead.
I also feel like also there's something to be said here abt how fandom approaches older adult characters w mental health problems & who struggle with suicidal ideation vs. how they approach the younger characters-- Like, I've seen a shocking lack of sympathy for Toshi from the same people who are very considerate to characters like Touya and Tomura, and I've seen otherwise kind people calling Toshi a "whiner" for what are obvious symptoms of SEVERE depression. These characters all have wildly different circumstances, yes-- but they all struggle with suicidality that manifests in different ways, and I feel they all deserve a more compassionate, delicate reading into their specific arcs and their respective actions as a result.
Toshi's arc and his struggles with mental health in particular is something I feel is handled in such a deeply kind way. The story never once disparages Toshi for backsliding, or treats him as selfish or a lost cause for continuing to struggle even though there are so many people supporting him and encouraging him to live. The story is kind, but the fandom isn't, and that's a bit of a tragedy. (and like, this is probably tmi, but I've struggled with my own mental health since middle school and the suicidal ideation really never goes away no matter how well I'm doing in life-- so.... I'm so happy to see a character with similar issues being depicted so kindly in a story, lol.)
Anyway!
"something something they hate him for being a slut and all the killings something something"
Yeah, they hated him b/c his ass was fat, or whatever those crazy kids are saying these days. <- fully aware that Stain is flat as a board.

9-1-1 Season 6 - Constructive Criticisms #7
Stereotypes in Season 6
Stereotypes have negative connotations due to the way they unfairly characterize a person, a group of people or a thing and unfortunately 9-1-1’s season 6 was filled with them.  Both the definition and modern meaning of stereotype shed light on why the word is negative and they illustrate the different ways people interpret them. According to Dictionary.com, stereotype is “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing”.  A modern definition is “Stereotype is most frequently now employed to refer to an often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about all people or things with a particular characteristic” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary.com).
While there were a lot of stereotypes included in several episodes of season 6, the reason for their inclusion is still unclear.  It’s possible some of them were unintentionally included but that can’t be the case for all of them since widely recognized stereotypes associated with men, women, ethnicities, race, nationalities and the workplace have been common knowledge for decades. Both main and recurring characters were portrayed in a way that stereotyped them and the vast majority of those stereotypes weren’t subtle.  Some of the stereotypes that are included in this post were easier to identify when the entire season was viewed as a whole instead of just viewing individual episodes.  Also, some of them were blatant and egregious and could be identified simply by the act itself and/or the portrayal of it.
Before proceeding below the cut, it’s imperative to note that everyone’s interpretation and identification of a form of media can be different since beliefs, choices, experiences and ideals differ.  All sorts of factors contribute to a person’s point of view along with their differing perspectives about a situation therefore, some people may not view the situations identified as stereotypes in season 6 in the same manner as someone else.
Full Disclosure:  As a woman of color, I struggled with the decision to post this “Constructive Criticisms” and I debated about it for several weeks because I hoped the things I identified as stereotypes were isolated incidents.  However, after I analyzed the season in its entirety instead of noting a singular stereotype that was included in an individual episode, I realized there were too many stereotypes included for this topic to be ignored. While it’s unclear if they were intentionally or unintentionally added into the season, my decision to post about them came down to me knowing I wouldn’t have been able to provide a clear, concise and objective point of view of season 6 overall if I would have excluded it.
My seventh set of “constructive criticisms” regarding stereotypes in season 6 are included below the cut.  Please note criticizing a TV show is NOT a bad thing especially since TV critics have been doing it for decades.  Constructive criticisms are designed to help make something better and they are VERY different from negativity.  A person can offer criticisms about a form of entertainment they spend their time watching and not be negative about it the same way two people can agree to disagree on a topic. Just because one person liked the season, they shouldn’t expect others to feel the way they do because everyone has their own opinions.  Simply put, two people can have different opinions about 9-1-1 and those opinions can COEXIST since they are not mutually exclusive.
If reading criticisms about the TV show 9-1-1 upsets you, then don’t read below the cut.
             Warning! ⚠️“Constructive Criticisms” Ahead!⚠️
In previous seasons, 9-1-1 episodes were balanced and they usually provided well-rounded viewpoints. An example of this included the way they showed a single father who left his toxic parents in El Paso, TX to relocate to Los Angeles for a better life for him and his son. Another example included a woman who overcame all the odds within the workplace when she successfully became a firefighter and a paramedic.
But something changed in season 4 and the well-rounded viewpoints became more singular in nature.  It almost seemed like one person or a small group of people started pushing an agenda that focused solely on their own beliefs, choices, experiences and ideals. Then they implemented them into the show in a way to make their beliefs appear to be the “best” and “only” way things should be done. Their ideologies were heavily included in season 6 to the point where they appeared in the form of stereotypes with underlying tones of biases and racism.  To illustrate this point, several stereotypes have been identified below and the topics included revolve around stereotypes for people with a single marital status, toxic parenting, men, women and the workplace.
Single marital status stereotypes
The stereotypes used to portray main characters who were single in season 6 was not only atrocious; they were simply just flat out WRONG and FALSE.  Contrary to popular belief, all single people aren’t lonely and every single person isn’t dying to get married or be in a relationship. However, 9-1-1 chose to depict Buck and Eddie as two lonely hot guys who don’t want to be alone but since the people in charge projected their own warped sense of beliefs, ideals and experiences, into Buck and Eddie’s storylines, they stuck them with one-dimensional women yet again who’ll suffer the same fate as their season 4 and season 5 counterparts.
Also, Eddie’s a hot single dad but they had Bobby and Pepa diminish the idea of him being enough as a single father by pushing him to date. This is a stereotype that has plagued single parents for decades. Eddie told Pepa he wasn’t ready but she pushed him the same way his mother pushes him so he would admit he didn’t want to end up ALONE. But the fact is HE WON’T BE, BECAUSE HE’S NOT ALONE SINCE HE HAS BUCK.  They went on a date in 6x13 so who knows what that whole storyline for Eddie was supposed to be in 6x14.
The stereotype that single parents can’t be happy was ridiculous especially since some people want to be single parents. Then there are others who become single parents when their spouses die or leave and in those instances it’s not by choice. Furthermore, some single parents don’t want to date until their children are grown because they don’t want to introduce their kids to someone new or they don’t want to run the risk of introducing their children to someone who’s weird.
It’s possible Marisol may not be weird but the way her character was portrayed in 6x5 was interesting since it appeared she may be in love with her brother so to stick her in the end of the season and to pair her with Eddie was RIDICULOUS.  Also, if the point was to put Eddie with a Latina instead of a woman from another race or ethnicity, then the show contradicted itself when they “haloed” Shannon in 6x15 only to validate Pepa’s comment about her being an outsider in 2x4 after she pushed him to date a Latina named Vanessa in 6x14. The show can’t have it both ways, so they have to decide who’s better for Eddie. Is it someone like Shannon or someone like Vanessa?   These decisions beg the question of who greenlit this? Did they even look at the previous episodes so they would know this didn’t make any sense at all?
The stereotype that hot guys like Buck can’t be single and happy was FOOLERY of epic proportions because Buck needs to figure himself out and he can’t do that if women keep being thrown at him like javelins. He was trying to work on himself but for some reason another woman who DOESN’T KNOW HIM was thrown at him in the final episodes of the season because someone believes a hot guy can’t be alone, so they want to keep him looking like a HIMBO when he’s clearly not that especially when he’s a HUSBAND whenever he’s with Eddie.
Also, it may be possible Natalia isn’t weird either but her fetishizing about Buck’s death was GROSS and she should have been left at Marie’s live funeral where Buck met her.
Toxic Parents
The stereotype that every person needs to make a mend with their parents even if they were toxic was STUPID and UNREALISTIC.  All parents aren’t good parents and just because one person chooses to forgive and forget, it doesn’t mean everyone should. The fact is some people shouldn’t be parents and their actions prove it so it would be better if 9-1-1 shows one or two of their main characters cutting their toxic parents off especially when they haven’t earned or deserved a redemption (Part #3 of this series already addressed this topic.)
The biased undertones of the Buckley parents being forgiven by their son who they treated like he was nothing for years was BAD on so many levels. All the Buckleys were shown doing in 6x10 and 6x11 was buying him a couch and they finally went to see him in the hospital after he died but they weren’t held accountable for everything they spent 29 years of his life doing. They lied to him and based on their reaction to his sperm donation in 6x10, it’s likely they’re still lying to him.
Also, the underlying biases that plagued Sang and Chimney’s father son relationship was HORRIFIC and to have Albert’s mother, who doesn’t know anything about Chimney except for whatever Sang and Albert told her, speak up on Sang’s behalf and tell Chimney he’s prideful just like his dad was even more ridiculous than Buck forgiving the Buckley parents. She didn’t know what she was talking about so she should take several seats and Sang should have been the one to talk to Chimney instead of her.  If Sang and Chimney had a conversation off-screen, then that’s a perfect example of why 9-1-1 needs a new showrunner.
Men stereotypes
Throughout season 6, for reasons known only to the people in charge of decision making for the show, stereotypes were included for men of all races, ethnicities and ages and some of those stereotypes were filled with undertones of racism and biases.
Fathers of color and stereotypes
Most fathers of color were incorrectly depicted and the majority of them had storylines and comments made about them that were stereotypical and untrue.
Eddie Diaz
Eddie was portrayed as an ANGRY dad in 6x11 who would have lost his son if it hadn’t been for Buck but THIS WAS THE MOST EGREGIOUS AND NEGATIVE STEREOTYPE with racial undertones that was associated with a main character of color who’s also a father in the history of 9-1-1. Eddie was labeled as an ANGRY Latino because he participated in a fight club in season 3 but here’s a quick reminder, a white woman introduced him to it but she wasn’t categorized as angry so what was the goal for them to use that word in 6x11 to describe Eddie?  His fight club storyline was used to define his entire character and I call BS because Eddie is NOT ANGRY.  So, WTF was that?
EDDIE DIAZ IS A GREAT DAD and Buck was the first one to say it in 2x4.  So, how did Eddie go from being a great dad to an angry one? He’s done nothing but sacrifice for Christopher while he went without. He left El Paso when Chris was 7 years old to give him a better life and he quit the 118 in 5x10 when Chris was afraid Eddie might die so WTH was this show trying to accomplish with that BS description of him in 6x11?  There’s no way Eddie would have allowed his parents to take his son away from him especially when he LEFT El Paso to get away from them. The fact is he would have stopped being a firefighter if it meant he could lose Christopher to his controlling mother Helena.  Eddie’s character was completely ASSASINATED with one word and for viewers who didn’t or haven’t seen him in seasons 2-5, they’ll always associate his character with the word ANGRY. Then to top off that egregious comment about him, the implication that Buck was the “white savior” who stepped in at the last minute to help even though Eddie would have moved hell and highwater to keep Chris was even more BS. (This topic will be expounded on in a future constructive criticism post.)
Nathaniel Green
Nathaniel was portrayed as an incompetent liar from 6x9 through 6x13 who didn’t tell Denny’s mothers he was spending time with him. He was a standup guy in 2x5 when he told Hen and Karen, he would follow their lead only for the show to turn him into a stereotypical black biological dad who lies and hides things from the child’s mothers and it was filled with racial undertones.  He was shown to be irresponsible when he listened to Denny instead of being responsible and contacting his parents the minute Denny showed up on his doorstep.  This is a problem because Denny showed up at some dude’s house and there’s no way he could have been 100% sure Nathaniel was his dad without having met him first.  In 6x9 it was implied that Denny didn’t show up at the right man’s house because Nathaniel’s face wasn’t shown.  No one knew who Denny was running around with for over four months until Hen and Karen found out in 6x13 so what was the goal of this storyline?  Also, IIRC in 2x5, Eva told Hen and Karen she used to do drugs with Nathaniel and they met in rehab so how was anyone supposed to know he was still clean and sober?
Furthermore, with the current state of the world, Denny being taken and picked up from school and going to the park with some RANDOM DUDE WAS NOT OK. Why was this storyline even allowed to play out like this especially after 6x3 aired?  This was done in BAD TASTE and someone should have said something about it.  For all Denny knew this man could have been someone else and the way Hen found out was asinine. What if she hadn’t been at the hospital that day? This was one of the WORST storylines ever and it should have been addressed by someone who understands the dangers of children riding around in cars with strangers and showing up at their homes unannounced. Denny could have been kidnapped or anything. Has the showrunner ever heard of STRANGER DANGER? Apparently not since she greenlit this BS storyline.
Noah
Noah’s stepfather was portrayed as a thief who used his stepson to get information so he could burglarize homes.  Noah is black and one of the two home invasion guys was black too, so by process of elimination, the probability the black home invader was Noah’s stepdad is 50%. If he was then this was stereotypical with racism mixed in because his stepfather was portrayed as a stereotypical black man who was willing to do anything to get money including use his stepson who put his job and his freedom at risk.  Noah got arrested and probably went to jail so tell the audience again who greenlit this storyline and who believed it was a good idea?
Connor
Full disclosure: I never liked Connor because he manipulated Buck to get his sperm but the way his character was portrayed in 6x12, 6x17 and 6x18 turned him into a stereotypical deadbeat dad.  In 6x12 he was shown like he was preparing to run away from his responsibilities which has been a stereotype that’s plagued the black community for decades and it’s contrary to what some people think since all black dads aren’t like that.  There are some black fathers who adopt and raise children who aren’t biologically their’s all the time. The character was written in 6B like he didn’t know what he signed up for in 6x4 when he asked Buck for his sperm but it’s possible the storyline wasn’t initially supposed to play out this way. If it wasn’t then someone thought it was a good idea to turn another black father into a deadbeat who didn’t want to take care of his child.  It seems like this was another case of someone projecting their personal belief system onto a character.
Sang Han
Full disclosure: I’m not a fan of Sang Han because of the way he treated Chimney and the difference he made between his two sons. However, he was portrayed as a prideful, arrogant, traditional, out of touch with reality man who spued derogatory comments about a man raising another man’s child being unnatural and it was an OXYMORONIC statement. Why was he the one chosen to say that especially when his own son was raised by another man?  Mr. Lee raised Chimney after Sang abandoned him so WTF was this storyline even supposed to be?
Stereotypes based on nationality and/or ethnicity
Chimney Han
Chimney being told he was prideful by Albert’s mother was so far from the truth that it would be funny if it wasn’t implied to be accurate.  Chimney has never been shown to be prideful, so this was a stereotype based on his nationality/heritage and that makes it even worse.
Ravi Panikkar
Ravi was stereotypically depicted as a Gen Z influencer who wants nothing more than to get money by being a landlord.  Once again someone who makes decisions for the show is out of touch with the current state of the world especially with regards to the increasing rate of renters being evicted from their homes and apartments. It begs the question of why Ravi couldn’t have been shown investing in Cryptocurrency or something other than real estate?  This was another egregious example of a stereotype with bias and racial undertones.
White men stereotypes
Evan Buckley
Buck always being portrayed as the “muscular, blonde haired, blue eyed HIMBO” that all the women want is a stereotype that needs to end. Contrary to popular belief, every person out there looking for a hot guy is NOT looking for one who looks like Buck because some people prefer Eddie while others might prefer Chimney, Bobby or Ravi. This constant pushing of Buck being the only guy on the show that women want is TIRED and it needs to change in season 7. All of the men on this show are handsome so please put the spotlight on Eddie, Bobby, Chimney or Ravi next season.
Women stereotypes
There were a lot of stereotypes associated with women on the show in season 6 too and some of them were just as egregious and blatant if not worse than those included for the men.
Women of color
Women of color were incorrectly depicted several times in season 6 based on stereotypes but it’s unclear if these instances were intentional.
Lottery tickets
Two black women, Athena Grant and Hen Wilson, being shown scratching off lottery tickets in 6x8 was a stereotype. Playing the lottery has been a negative stereotype that has plagued minority communities for years so if the show wanted someone to play the lottery, they should have chosen other main characters to do it if it was really about someone’s fantasy. Why was this even included in the episode?  Maddie and Buck could have done it especially since Maddie suggested Buck buy a lottery ticket in 6x11 after he woke up from his coma.  Since Athena and Hen didn’t win the lottery, the scene was unnecessary and shouldn’t have been included in the episode.
Hen Wilson
It was implied with the emergency in 6x16 that Hen was a stereotypical black woman who says negative things that make her friends and co-workers uncomfortable. Typically, the emergencies included in an episode coincide with the main characters’ storylines and in 6x16 the black lady in the emergency who had the tonsil stones was connected to Hen’s character since something egregious and unkind came out of their mouths. This was a stereotype that could have been easily overlooked if it hadn’t been for the “something stinks” theme included in the episode. Reminder, Hen told Chimney he shouldn’t get married in front of the 118 and she argued with Buck about Chimney figuring out for himself if he wanted to propose to Maddie. The black lady in the emergency told Chimney he was important too while they were in the ambulance so was it the show’s intention to include those racial undertones?  Only the people in charge know the answer but it wasn’t lost in translation like someone thought it would be.
Women – general stereotypes
The stereotype that all women, no matter their age, race or nationality want a man like Buck to rescue them is also TIRED and needs to stop because it’s not true (see above).
Maddie Buckley
It was implied Maddie makes more money than Chimney in 6x15 when she said she pays more than half the expenses and reminder this was after 6x10 when she asked him if he was still bothered by them borrowing the money for their down payment from her parents. This was a stereotype about how some women who make more money than their significant others, mention it at the most inopportune times. The point of her comment wasn’t addressed but a quick look on Salary.com clearly shows a Los Angeles dispatcher’s salary is about 55K per year while a Los Angeles firefighter’s salary ranges from 79K to 113K.  Also, Chimney’s been a firefighter for a long time which means his fictitious salary could be closer to 150K while Maddie’s only been a dispatcher for 4 years (reminder she quit at the end of season 4 and she didn’t return until the end of season 5) and the money she got from Doug’s estate is gone because she said she spent it all in Boston. Did anyone think to check Salary.com about this before Maddie’s comment was included in that episode?   Also, what was the purpose of this stereotypical statement?  Was it to show the audience Chimney isn’t paying his fair share? An answer to that question will have to wait until season 7 if it’s even addressed again.
Rhonda Fitzsimmons
Better known as “Crazy Carol the Coupon Lady” in 6x13 was portrayed as someone who stays home and swindles money from unsuspecting citizens who want to save money by using coupons. Who greenlit this storyline because it played right into four stereotypes, i.e., (1) a white woman who swindles people out of money, (2) a white woman who stole a black woman’s identify to do it, (3) a pushy white woman who invited herself into Maddie’s home without being told she could enter and (4) a woman who used her nephew to get what she wanted instead of doing the right thing?
Workplace stereotypes
The manager, director or leader knows best stereotype is another TIRED trope that should end. Bobby not talking to Hen about the interim captain slot in 6x1 because he assumed she was too busy to do it was ridiculous. Him not telling Chimney the real reason he was sending him to the academy in 6x14 was another blatant misstep. Him deciding to promote Lucy in 6x1 even though she was shown to be incompetent in 5x14 was egregious especially for viewers who actually have to report to incompetent managers who don’t know how to do the job but were promoted solely because they have the years of experience. Instead of Bobby talking to Buck about his PT scores, he just marked them as outstanding in 6x14 until Buck called him out on it.  Eddie listening to Bobby’s advice in 6x14 and 6x17 regarding his personal life for him to misunderstand it was redundant.  Maybe if Bobby got some storylines that actually pertained to his role as Fire Captain of the 118 instead of him being a private investigator these things wouldn’t happen. Let him talk to and have meetings with other captains or here's an idea, show Bobby talking to Chief Alonzo or the LAFD department leaders because it’s actually part of his responsibilities.
It appears whoever was in charge of the direction of characters’ storylines, projected their own ideals, beliefs, choices and experiences onto the characters because they felt like everyone in the world should do things the way they do them or they want people to make the types of choices they make.  For example, the attempted normalization of characters like Maddie, Buck and Chimney accepting their toxic parents appeared to have been someone’s twisted idea of the things everyone else should do because they probably did it. It would have made more narrative sense to show Maddie and Buck cutting the Buckleys off and Chimney having a real conversation with his dad instead of Albert’s mother explaining away Sang’s bad behavior.
Hopefully these stereotypes weren’t intentionally included in season 6 especially since 9-1-1 previously highlighted the way their characters overcame those types of ideals, beliefs and experiences. They’ve always been about groundbreaking television with showing different perspectives and different sides of situations.  Prior to season 4, there were many examples of main characters overcoming difficult situations and THEY DID NOT follow the typical path to move forward from their experiences.  Maddie and Bobby provide two examples of this.  In season 2, Maddie had been abused by her husband and she was shown to overcome it by leaving him.  When Doug found her, she fought for her life and went to therapy afterwards to deal with her trauma.  Bobby lost his entire family in an apartment fire in Minnesota before he moved to L.A. He had a plan to commit suicide after he would have saved the number of people that were lost in that fire but he talked with his priest on a weekly basis to work towards healing from his trauma. Also, after he told Chimney about his plan, Chimney was the one who saved Bobby (NOT BUCK because contrary to Buck’s twisted memories in his coma dream, he didn’t fix Bobby) when he found a couple whose baby was saved after receiving a blood transfusion of Bobby’s blood. He’s still dealing with his trauma and so is Maddie but they were shown to overcome them and they’re moving forward.  9-1-1 was a top-rated show back then but now they just aren’t and it’s mainly because the ideals, beliefs, choices and experiences they’re presenting appear to be from one person’s point of view.
If the goal is to be groundbreaking again, they’ll have to get rid of these stereotypical storylines and push the envelope by showing the main characters doing something other than what every other TV shows’ characters are doing. It’s unclear if these decisions are being made by the showrunner or if they were being pushed to make them by the network.  If it was the latter, hopefully the move to ABC will change this otherwise it’ll end up being just like the other shows that are on their last legs holding on to a few viewers because people are tired and they want to see realistic television not redundant storytelling.
These are my criticisms regarding stereotypes and “Constructive Criticisms” #8 will be posted on Monday, July 17, 2023.
I have a total of 15 CANON “Constructive Criticisms” (8 remaining) and my goal is to have all of them posted by Monday, August 28, 2023.  The topics are being posted in a specific order that begins with the overall issues for season 6 so they can be referenced within the posts about individual characters and ships that will follow them.

Something super important to the concept of fan projects recently came up on the twits so I wanna crosspost what I said about it over here.
Tumblr media
This project already backtracked on this (thank god), but I still feel obligated to make a general PSA!
YOU CANNOT HAVE MINORS ON FAN PROJECTS LIKE THIS.
If there's an assumed obligation to contribute, and money being exchanged for the product created using that contribution, even if that money is going to a charity afterward, you can't have minors on the project.
Well, technically, you can. I can't stop you. But it comes with a host of caveats.
If you want to allow minors onto your project, you need to protect the the mod team from any possible legal ramifications—including but not limited to exploitation of minors and violation of child labor laws. This means you'll need to create an extremely granular contract, which must be signed by the parent(s), and the creation of that contract would literally obligate the underage contributor (and their legal guardian) to doxx themselves, while the mod team also has to doxx themselves to the minor in question and the legal guardian with whom they are entering into a contract.
I understand wanting to be inclusive, but I am begging young adults in fandom to please do your research before starting a project like this, regardless of whether it's for-profit. The legality of selling fanworks is already very tenuous under the law—do you really want to run the risk of being taken to court for taking advantage of a minor with unpaid labor? Do you really want to risk someone in on that contract turning coat somewhere down the line and releasing someone's personal information to the public? Is inclusivity worth putting yourself and everyone else on the project in the line of fire?
Maybe you think it is, and that's your prerogative, but I have a much safer suggestion!
If you're 18-19-20 (assuming you're in the States, most other Western countries can pretend I said 16-17-18 or whatever) and want to do a fan project with your friends who may be underage, do a Big Bang or a theme week instead!
Projects like this have no obligation to produce anything, so there's no contracts—most zines/fanthologies/etc run on informal contracts, even if you didn't sign anything you entered into an agreement whether you realize it or not. Likewise, there's no risk of accusation of financial exploitation because the final result isn't being sold. This means there's basically no risk for anyone on the project, but you still get to have all the fun of planning and working together to create something for your fandom of choice!
Since I did @sephesisweek this year, I've been thinking of putting together a guide on organizing a theme week to help out folks whose only real exposure to collaborative fan projects is the modern zine scene. Would anyone be interested? There's so much more to coming together as a fandom than creating a product to sell, and I'd like to help encourage these other kinds of projects where I can!

about the kiseia thing - im honestly more upset that they dumbed her down into a crazy yandere waifu whos obsessed with her brother. in the webtoon shes vengeful and genuinely resentful, but in the game she mostly wants to kill him cuz shes "into" that kinda thing. also respectfully disagree - i agree that including an element in a story doesnt necessarily mean the author condones it, but in this case incest is just used in a fetishy way to waifu-ify kiseia, not really portrayed as something messed up. also i think the incest is more uncomfortable here since aguero and kiseia grew up together and they're so closely related, as opposed to like family members from distant branches hooking up with each other
I can accept not liking Kiseia’s character as shown in this event, and I wouldn’t be too surprised if the Kiseia we meet later on in ToG’s story isn’t like this
Also I guess I just learn to roll with these types of “younger sister falls in love with older brother” stories because I’ve watched so many anime. So while the inclusion of incest elements will probably squick out a lot of people, I’m desensitized.
Though I will say that to me honestly, Kiseia doesn’t come off as in love with Khun and more like she’s obsessed with receiving validation from her only remaining family member.
Kiseia is an orphan taken in by Agnes and groomed to be a murder weapon all for Khun’s older sister.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see from this that even as a child she struggled with her self worth, that she wanted to be fully part of Agnes’s family due to the trauma of losing her own. That’s also why even though Khun states his older sister was difficult to interact with, Kiseia still bonded with her, because she wanted an older sister to love her.
So obviously these attachment issues would also affect her relationship with Khun. She trusted him, and from the above screenshots, took his opinion very seriously.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And when she saw that Khun didn’t like what she was doing, her self worth took a big hit, and this got even worse when it came out Khun betrayed his family and her trust by working with Maria, and then setting off the events that led to his older sister’s suicide and Agnes’s banishment.
I’m only halfway through the event so I can’t say any more, but to me, Kiseia seems like a very broken and lonely girl groomed to be a killer and then rejected by the one person she has left.
Of course, just because the way she’s written makes sense to me, it doesn’t mean it’s the same for everyone else, and people don’t need to like it either. I’m just saying that a lot of people are knee-jerk reacting to the upfront disturbing implications of Kiseia’s character without looking deeper at how this personality was formed.

let’s talk about panphobic dogwhistles
A panphobic dogwhistle is coded/subtle to avoid opposition. These statements aren’t inherently panphobic and not everyone who shares them is panphobic.
“You can identify as pan, if... I support you being pan, but...”
This create hoops for pan people to jump through in order to be supported. But support and respect contingent on us internalizing and regurgitating panphobia isn’t genuine. We don’t trade autonomy for a sliver of pseudo acceptance.
“New labels damage the community. It doesn’t matter if a label is valid, it matters if it’s useful, materially different, and serves a political purpose.” And other anti self-identification/individualism statements.
This targets any label that isn’t The Four. Labels are, and always have been, useful if they help someone understand and communicate their feelings, identity, and experiences. We don’t owe our queerness to anyone, and we don’t have to use our queerness as a calculated strategy for anything.
What damages the community is creating an environment where any kind of difference in identity/language/expression or rebellion against norms/status quo/rules is met with hostility, fostering fear and distrust of the people who are supposed to support and nurture that self-discovery and expression.
“All genders/regardless of gender has always been the definition of bi.”
This often perpetuates the counterfactual ideas that pan “stole” The bi definition and isn’t necessary because “bi already means that”. This is also ahistorical biphobia; there’s never been one “true” definition of bi (this isn’t even the common community one) and it erases bi history/people who don’t relate to it.
Using scare quotes around pan.
Putting pan in quotes when it isn’t necessary is often a way of disrespecting its legitimacy, casting doubt/judgement, especially if pan is the only one in quotes.
“Bi has always included trans/nonbinary people.”
This is often used to falsely claim pan was created because “biphobes thought bi didn’t include trans/nonbinary people, so pan doesn’t need to exist”. (Binary bi texts aren’t universal, but there are plenty that speak to a reality that affected people and contributed to the current more inclusive language.)
“Mspec labels overlap but the distinction matters to some and that’s okay.”
I’ve seen this said so many times in response to people asking what bi and pan mean and how they relate to and differ from each other. What good is it to tell people the distinction matters while avoiding explaining what that distinction is? Ultimately this statement discourages any dialogue about mspec labels.
“Bi is an umbrella term that includes pan.”
The bi umbrella was once genuine inclusion of all mspec people, and activists/orgs use it, so most people don’t see it as anything else. But when bi only content has “bi+” slapped onto it, it becomes meaningless and performative. Panphobes also use it to argue pan doesn’t need its own, specific visibility.
“When a character ‘just likes people’ or is ‘attracted to all genders or regardless of gender’ they aren’t automatically pan instead of bi.”
I’ve experienced this from panphobes who simply assume pan interpretations of pan definitions/common pan explanations must be because of biphobia. But it’s a big, false, and purposely bad faith leap of logic to fuel the panphobic narrative that pan people are always misrepresenting bi.
“Pan people need to let bi people have something and stop making everything about themselves.”
This might seem like advocating for bi only content/events for the sake of bi visibility/community, but it’s often malicious exclusion of pan people who’ve always been included. We aren’t “invading” or “derailing” anything by being in spaces we’ve always been in, or by sharing a bi post because we relate to it.
“Read the Bi Manifesto.”
A lot of the time, people say this because they think the manifesto states the true definition of bi and proves pan is unnecessary/biphobic. However, the full text explicitly states there isn’t one true definition of bi and the group who published it explicitly supports all mspec people and identities.
“People identify as pan due to internalized biphobia.”
This masks panphobia with concern for internalized biphobia. Pan is being written off as a product of biphobia under the guise of wanting bi people to embrace being bi. Pan people are being equated to bi folks who just haven’t unlearned biphobia enough to embrace being bi, when that isn’t the case.
“All pan people are bi, but not all bi people are pan.”
This appears to be an easy explanation of bi/pan, borrowing from “all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares”. But queerness isn’t geometry and doesn’t work like that. The only pan people who are bi are the ones who also identify as bi. We can’t box queerness into simple, universal categories.
“Analyze why you’re uncomfortable with being associated with bi people or being called bi.”
Of course, pan and bi are associated, but it’s never mere association these people are referring to. Pan people are vilified and wrongly painted as biphobic for criticizing the erasure and mislabeling of our identity.
“Bi and pan people need to stop fighting each other, both are valid and neither is -phobic.”
This implies the “fighting” is equal. But there are popular bi accounts dedicated to panphobia, “battleaxe bi” was coopted for panphobia, a major bi org spreads panphobia, panphobic bi authors/activists are praised, and researchers subsume pan data into bi data. Biphobia from pan people just is not on the same scale as panphobia from bi people.
This is not to disregard/downplay biphobia from pan people. It’s just important to acknowledge the reality, severity, and disparity of the situation. Erasing that by saying or implying it’s just a silly mutual argument about which word is better is disingenuous at best, and malicious misrepresentation at worst.
“I’ve never seen a definition of pan that isn’t biphobic/transphobic.”
Panphobes involved in bi/pan “discourse” saying this aren’t hoping to learn the actual (read: non bigoted) definitions of pan, they’re saying there aren’t any definitions of pan that aren’t biphobic or transphobic, because they believe pan is inherently biphobic and transphobic.
“Behaviorally/scientifically bi.”
“Behaviorally” and “scientifically” bi are used to categorize people based on so-called innate, universal indicators of being bi. Both say pan people are actually bi, hiding identity policing/erasure behind science. Funnily enough, researchers have said it’s hard to determine who is “actually bi” because “individuals determine this for themselves”. In other words, there aren’t innate or universal indicators, we simply are who we say we are.
So. I’m sure there are plenty more examples I’ve missed, and if you have any please send them my way! (I tried to make this as short as possible, so if you’d like me to elaborate on any of these, let me know and I’ll happily do so!)
But I hope this will encourage you to think a bit deeper about the things people say and the possible intent behind it before sharing, as well as be more invested in supporting pan people and trusting us when we tell you something is being said to spread panphobia.

James Acaster stood in for John Robins, alongside Elis James, for a couple of radio episodes in February 2018, while John off touring The Darkness of Robins, and of course James was very good. There were lots of funny bits, everyone should go listen to the episodes of you want to hear James Acaster actually be funny, it's episodes 208 and 209 of the Radio X years. However, I had three things I wanted to comment on that have nothing to do with the actual jokes.
1) They discussed whether James Acaster is ginger, which I appreciate, because that has always confused me. Or at least, it's confused me since I first got on Tumblr, which was not long after I first saw Taskmaster, and saw the blond boy from season 7 referred to as a ginger. I've never brought it up because I just thought I guess i'm not very good at identifying hair colours, but I always found it strange. Which is why I pleased that, during this radio episode, they mentioned the idea of James Acaster being ginger, and James said that people call him ginger sometimes, but he's always thought he was blond. I am pleased that, at least, I am not the only one who's found this confusing.
But then, I watched the first nine seasons of Taskmaster before going on Tumblr and thought of Alex Horne as having brown hair, and then I saw people call him ginger on here, and I went back and looked at pictures of him, and yes, he's definitely ginger, I just didn't notice. I think I sometimes just don't notice when people are ginger. But I've looked at James Acaster again and I still don't think he is. Also, I'm now remembering that in early episodes of The Last Leg they used to call Josh Widdicombe ginger, and he's less ginger and more purely blond than anyone mentioned in this post so far, including Elis James.
I mean, I do see the colour red. The first time I watched Mock the Week I got that Frankie Boyle has red hair. But I do not understand how people look at James Acaster and see ginger. Glad that's been addressed and he's on my side.
2) Elis James and James Acaster dedicated some of the episode to making fun of John Robins for being on a tour with his highly emotional stand-up hour, featuring what Elis enjoys calling "the cynical inclusion of emotional heft" (citing an Edinburgh review that praised the "emotional heft", but the word cynical was added by Elis). This is fair enough, I happen to like a good stand-up hour with some emotional heft, I think something can be curated for the speaker's personal benefit while also being grounded in genuine emotional weight and I think The Darkness of Robins is one of many examples of that, but also, I'm aware that there's something inherently cynical in turning emotional heft into a project for monetary profit and awards. No problem with Elis making jokes about that. I've heard Elis James' stand-up routines, it is definitely internally consistent for him to make fun of other people for doing comedy with meaningful emotional subject matter. Absolutely nothing in Elis' catalogue makes him a hypocrite for mocking that. However, it was pretty amusing to listen to James Acaster make fun of something for doing that. Especially as this was just a couple of months before James started performing the earliest WIPs of Cold Lasagne, a show at least partly inspired by a breakup he had, I think, the same week as John Robins' breakup that formed the basis of Darkness of Robins. James Acaster may have just been annoyed that someone else got there first and won a Perrier Award for it, before he thought to do a show about that.
3) In honour of James Acaster back on Radio X, they did one more Classic Scrape.
After I heard this bit, I looked up when Comedy Unleashed started, it was, in fact, February 2018. So I'm pleased about this. According to Nish Kumar recently, James Acaster thinks it's going a bit far to yell at Jimmy Carr at a comedy festival just for appearing on Jordan Peterson's podcast. And maybe James is right, even though Nish has my eternal respect for being a person who didn't listen to reason on that. So I enjoy hearing a story in which James Acaster is the one picking a fight over people doing shitty things. Some people are all right.

how do you go about planning your storyline? :) especially for your decades challenge
Hello there dearest! I’m sorry this took me a while. It’s a bit of a difficult one and I wanted to take some time to sort out the chaotic process in my brain before I tried to type it out 😅
This is just a rough outline of what works for me specifically in writing a historical story on simblr. I can’t speak to writing advice in general because it’s not something I have experience with; nor do I think this will be helpful for everyone. So please feel free to pick and choose whatever suits your fancy or ignore it all completely.
Of course, it’s time to take this below the cut, since you know it’s going to get a bit long 😉
1. Find Inspiration (Nonfiction books, Blogs, TV shows, YouTube videos, Period Pieces, etc etc…)
For a decades challenge/history based story I think this is really the starting point for me. Whether it be styles of architecture, clothing trends, a historical fact, or an individual’s story, there’s so much real life inspiration to be found for this type of story. It can often seem small, but sometimes pinpointing what you know you want to include and working it in there can be the crux of so much of a story.
I’ve said this before but one of the very first things I knew I wanted to include was the Titanic, since it was the first historical event I ever became interested in. Other examples are New Orleans as a setting, the inclusion of Storyville, and even something as small as the axe man that I included in this post.
When I find these moments of inspiration, I try to immediately transform them into tangible scenes or plot points rather than simply jot them down as a note or like a “maybe for later”. This keeps me from getting mired in too many ideas or overwhelmed with things I like, but that don’t necessarily have a place in the story.
However, sometimes it also means I will need to tweak ideas as the plot develops, such as changing the original storyline of Rosella and Lord Harrington to Rosella and Georgiana; but even with these edits, this process still creates a sort of scaffolding structure for the story as a whole. It gives me plot points or small, specific scenes that I am working and writing toward. I’m then able to allude to the eventual outcome beforehand as well as weave a larger narrative around it while still having clear points of guidance for where I want to go. 2. Connect the Dots
The “dots” here are the aforementioned scenes and/or plot points that I have written well in advance. I have dozens and dozens of these, and I’m basically constantly adding to the document where I keep my writing. This is all kept in chronological order so I can see the progression as well as where I need more narrative to fill out a decade. I generally look at this structure and ask myself: how do I realistically reach that point?
To use the example of the Titanic again: this meant somehow getting the oldest daughter of a relatively poor and close knit family aboard a ship bound for America. It meant not only putting her in contact with someone who would have access to these tickets, but also giving her a reason to leave the people she loved. Then once those larger dots are connected, I continue to focus on smaller and smaller threads, like the details of Georgiana herself or Rosella’s relationship to Zelda, until the storyline feels fully fleshed out and a character’s motivations are coming through. 3. Character Consistency
That last bit is very important to me, and I always try and think about how the characters are functioning within the framework of what I’ve written and the historical landscape. Sometimes this comes into play before connecting the dots, but often it is actually what finally puts the puzzle pieces in place. Something sim-specific here is that I really do use sims traits as guidance on who the characters are, how they interact with the world, and how the world has affected them. So often when I am referencing a prewritten plot point or scene I will ask myself, how would that character get to this point? What may have happened that would lead them here? How does their personality interact with this historical event or point of inspiration?
Many scenes have often come from more outward facing questions, like, is this trait clear to everyone reading as well as me? Has this visibly impacted their life and done so in a sensible way? This is in part responsible for many extra scenes we saw at the end of the 1920s when a few of my best simblr babes pointed out to me that Antoine’s motivations weren’t very clear. It also helps me to fill in and round out that base storyline structure with more small, real-life scenes that showcase and develop certain traits as characters grow and interact with the world around them.
With all that said, this is often a very long process that involves reading or watching historical content, going over my own writing again and again, and just waiting for the day when my brain suddenly writes 5-6 scenes unprompted. Other times I’m flying by the tip of my boots, watching y’all feedback and incorporating it or reading through scenes with friends for their help.
So the process has looked very different at various points in the narrative and through the many months I’ve been writing this story. But overall, having those points to write toward as well as tangible character traits have guided the process throughout.

i read sounds fake but okay (the book, authored by the podcasters) and it does not cover anyone allo aro. it also has no awareness of loveless aros, non-sam aros, or apl aros. it even includes a "what makes us human is... love! of all kinds!!" section to finish up the book.
tl;dr: this is, first and foremost, a book about asexuality, by an asexual and a demisexual. to broaden their perspective, they surveyed/interviewed ace and acespec people for additional quotes. throwing in the greens on the cover, and having separate aro and ace flags as the section break within chapters, makes it promise something it never delivers.
i also checked their podcast, which is how i found out this book is one year old (as of recording an episode for release on 25 Feb 2024), meaning the writing process itself probably happened in 2022. given the lack of perspective, i had not expected it to be so recent.
(going to cut the rest of this because it is long)
the focus on and centering of asexuality while borrowing a bit of the aromantic symbols seems rude at best for people who are clearly aware of the difference between aro and ace. they discuss the split attraction model early on, and they consistently use aspec, acespec, and arospec accurately. oh, and they happen to run what might be the biggest aspec podcast (as in, the only podcast I could name if someone asked me, "are there aspec podcasts?")
i also noticed that alterous attraction rates a mere footnote with a brief definition (and that definition is "between platonic and romantic") when one person being quoted used it. somehow, this doesn't come up for discussion in the relationships chapter. or anywhere.
overall, i got the feeling that the authors were approached with a book deal based on their podcast, but didn't actually have much to say. or just, like, phoned it in. it's a relatively short book. it dives deep into an AITA reddit post because apparently only that one person could be found for the topic of housing. and that's a topic that would have to be revisited to pad out the final chapter.
[i wanted to know what other people thought, so i checked reviews, and the answer is: there's a lot of criticism of the authors' position that you can hate JKR but like HP. accurate and valid; i have nothing to add to that.]
i wanted to be objective, so i scanned the book again. out of 82 quotes, Phoebe gets 3, and Rai gets one. Phoebe, she/they, responded as ace but realized they were bisexual (allosexual, alloromantic, trans) afterward; Rai, they/them, included neither an acespec label nor allosexual.
ten quotes are from people who use a sexuality label other than asexual:
2 gray-ace
4 demisexual
2 aspec
1 acespec
1 aegosexual
(i didn't track individual names; Phoebe and Rai just stand out.)
so in the final accounting, five of every six quotes are from people identifying as asexual, and none are from people who are unequivocally arospec and not acespec (including loveless aros, non-sam aros, neu aros, unit aros, allosexual aros, and aplatonic aros. and yes, there is overlap between those terms, but they all have zero representation in the text.)
i want to be clear before signing off... it's not that i think everyone should know everything about our community, necessarily, but i do think that people who claim to write for the whole aspec community owe it to us to be well-informed and inclusive before publishing.

What is a Dear Gifter Letter?
A Dear Gifter Letter, or DGL from hereon, is a letter to your anonymous gifter outlining all the "please don'ts" that matter to you!
When signing up for a Polyswap event, you may want to include your squicks... but you just don't want to clutter your prompt up with things like NOTPs and headcanons you don't like. Some people are a bit more verbose than others, after all, and this is a way to circumvent AO3's "prompt box" character limit or just be a little more comprehensive on something you need to avoid.
While we encourage including the most important no-nos in your prompts, think of this like... an expansion or DLC! So, let's get into it.
Squick?? What even??
Anything that makes you go "nnnyyeegh" or hinders your enjoyment of something. Think of it like an ICK [for the younger crowds], or getting the heebie-jeebies. There's nothing wrong with a squick, but it's just not for you... and that's okay. A DGL allows you to outline squicks or peeves you'd like your anonymous gifter to avoid. Some common squicks include:
phonetic / "typed out" quirks, or having Thollukth talk like thith ["Sollux talk like this"] in a fic.
extremely saturated colors, or having an art piece with a lot of contrasting colors.
quirked dialogue, or having characters type in their quirks for a significant portion of the fic [which can interfere with screenreaders].
NOTPs, or NOT THIS PAIRING[s?] — the metaphorical opposite of an OTP or ship you enjoy very much.
specific headcanons, or re-interpretations of the original canon such as how tall or thin someone may be.
interaction types / relationship types, or particular dynamics you're just not interested in [such as Bro & Dave being really good brothers, or Eridan & Sollux being in a pale romance].
But what if I don't like really specific stuff?
The important thing to note about DGLs is they are not commission posts. You cannot control your gifter, nor can you enact certain headcanons / expecations on them. Polyswap is about making poly-shipping stuff for fun, and the fact that it's also a gift is the hilarious bonus!
While it's important to let both the moderators and your gifter know that a particular ship would totally ruin your day and thus your enjoyment of something, we can't enforce or encourage a DGL that outlines "rules" or "expectations" of the gifter. A letter is supplementary, and even if you really want to be thorough, it's important to know that your gifter isn't required to read a DGL to begin with.
Furthermore, Polyswap is a shipping event first and foremost. The primary focus of ANY gift should be... the shipping! Miscellaneous things like ships you didn't even list in your prompt, or dynamics that really don't affect your requests, aren't necessary. Sure, not everyone thinks that EriDirkFef is the best polyship ever; they might even hate it! But mentioning that hate in a DGL just clutters things up.
I don't want to be matched with X!
Anything in a DGL which implies a moral superiority or "Do Not Interact" vibe is completely unnecessary. We're all here to make polyship content. Any hardline "please don't match me to a specific person" or similar information should be conveyed to the moderators in your OFFER, which is private. Not written in your DGL for the whole world to see.
This is an all-inclusive event, which means that anyone of any background within the fandom can participate. We have an ALL AGES option, Prospit, as well as an 18+ ADULTS ONLY option, Derse, for sign-up. But that's where the lines end! If you're just not comfortable being associated with certain shippers, creators, or headcanon-enjoyers... then this event may not be for you!
Where to post my Dear Gifter Letter?
You can host your DGL just about anywhere that your gifter can access. We recommend a Tumblr post or a "view only" Google Document that doesn't record who visits. After all, your gifter has to remain anonymous, and we don't want you figuring out who it is too soon!
If you have any further questions about DGLs and how to get them to your gifter, just email us at HSPOLYSHIPSWAP on GMAIL.
