Two steps back, one step forward. Have re-written the still oh-so-crude basic rendering. Am missing h, u, o, the consonant ligatures, and minimum acceptable vowel shapes on a number of the basic forms. Which is to say a lot. But! Am still feeling happy about progress so far. The stroke tracing animation in particular pleases me.

The phonetic ambiguity resolution is still a bit janky, am not writing long term preferences to DB yet (hence a lot of crufty results) or retaining any phrases at all for that matter. But! Am getting closer and each re-write of backing logic gets easier to work with.

Too many competing next steps, but will continue to press on. Short term list: adding Gregg rendering to the IPA dictionary lookup, implementing English dictionary lookup, saving Gregg -> IPA & IPA -> English bridge preferences, finish implementing the fucking font 🙈, phrase saving/import/export. After I finish those, I think I can do an alpha app release. And then I can start implementing the practice/learn Gregg lessons.

If anyone was interested in helping, would welcome it. Am really struggling with the Bezier curve decisions needed to create font. The whole "render it all relative" constraint has me just beating my head against the wall, trying to visualize/understand/remember how vector math works.

A/N: I’ve never read the books, so this is a combination of the Villeneuve films, the Dune Wiki, and a heavy dose of just making shit up lol. As a warning up front, this will not have a Happily Ever After ending, but maybe more like Happy For Now?

When you first arrived at Giedi Prime, nothing could have adequately prepared you for the shock the harsh environment brought.

Approaching the planet, dark, heavy clouds of pollution choked its atmosphere, seen even from your descent into the atmosphere. Any hope you’d had on your mission here began to wither as you saw the goliath manufacturing plants and landfills that scarred the horizon on all sides. Even the advanced Sardakaur technology on this ship couldn’t soften the harsh winds. Could this be the reason why they accepted you— a last-ditch effort to salvage whatever was left of this godforsaken planet…?

When you landed, you rose unsteadily to your feet and grabbed your luggage. Two large bags and one satchel tied at your waist. The rest unloaded off the ship, full of your tools and plants. Your entire life packed away, always ready for the next move. An escort accompanied you off ship, the rest staying inside. Not that you would blame them; if it was not required of you, you would not leave, either.

Keeping my brain limber by finally throwing myself into the Word Buttler project, ✨ now with Gregg Shorthand support ✨ My rendering of the shorthand remains incredibly weak, but I've spent time fleshing out other support elements. All of it is blindingly ugly-- I'm a dev, not a designer. Am happy that the functionality I want is slowly being actualized, including:

A Gregg Shorthand keyboard where you swipe out from the center to find the key representing the stroke, in vague approximation of the shape being sought

A Gregg -> IPA -> English translator, which includes inline text elements of vertically stacked options to handle phonetic ambiguity

Simple support tools to help me refine the elements I'm using to render the shorthand. Am far enough along now (can highlight individual characters mid-phrase) that I can go back and re-do how I'm rendering the strokes. Maybe if I read that paper for the fifith time I'll finally wrap my head around how to implement it...
