I just find it very interesting that all the labour classed as lesser (most often seen as "women's labour") becomes indispensable in moments of crisis. It's just interesting to see how quickly people turn to that labour and then discard it in moments of peace or prosperity, devaluing it until another crisis hits.

Before 1933, Germany was a center of LGBT+ community and culture, with several renowned organizations serving and supporting trans and gender non-conforming people. Hitler’s Nazi government, however, brutally targeted the trans community, deporting many trans people to concentration camps and wiping out vibrant community structures. As transgender people are now increasingly targets of discriminatory legislation and hate, join the Museum for a program exploring these stories and experiences prior to and during the Holocaust.
This panel conversation will feature Dr. Anna Hájková, Associate Professor of Modern European Continental History at the University of Warwick; Dr. Katie Sutton, Associate Professor of German and Gender Studies, School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics at Australian National University; and Dr. Bodie A. Ashton, a Postdoctoral Researcher and Lecturer at Universität Erfurt, with moderator Rabbi Marisa Elana James, Director of Social Justice Programming at Congregation Beit Simchat Torah in New York.

as a kaiju movie, godzilla minus one (2023) does everything it should and more. unlike many earlier godzilla films, where the themes and emotional arcs are functionally an excuse to show godzilla, godzilla functions as a way to illustrate the themes and emotional arcs; from a character standpoint, the film could almost completely narratively function without godzilla, which sets it head and shoulders over many of its peers. furthermore, godzilla’s presence from almost the first scene—vast yet not truly alien—establishes it not as a destructive intrusion from the future, as in films where godzilla is purely a metaphor for the nuclear age, but rather as an unwanted lingering of the past, a literalization of postwar cultural trauma and survivor’s guilt. however, whereas as a monster movie it takes a bold new stance, as a war movie it pulls its punches. placing the start of the movie at the hopeless end of wwii serves to shift the narrative from the national and nationalistic to the level of the individual (while also firmly placing the repercussions of imperialism and war crimes outside of the story’s scope), as also seen in the burmese harp (1956) and fire on the plain (1959). like those films, the presence of fantasy or magical realism replaces the presence of flesh-and-blood human foes, and, like the burmese harp (1956), the film adopts a very strong, at times heavy-handed, life-affirming message. and yet, for all the openly themed monologues, this film pulls its punches when it comes to its life-affirming, anti-war stance. the narrative only grants its failed kamikaze pilot redemption when he chooses to undergo a suicide mission; it only grants its kid too young to go to war maturity when he chooses to go to war. of course these themes of self-sacrifice come naturally to the collectivist narrative this film shares with most kaiju movies. despite this, the contrast of these arguments more suited to a war movie with the nominal themes of the film left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth even during its highly engaging final fight scene. all things told, godzilla minus one (2023) combines two genres rarely seen together in a deeply intriguing and in certain respects highly effective way, but the spaces in which it takes the easy way out leave points of weakness in the story that highlight the strength it could have had

I'm getting better at drawing his face in my style, lol. Hopefully, I'll be able to make a nice, fully finished artwork instead of a sketch. Till next time, lol
This isn't meant to be readable even though it's kinda obvious I was drawing up a little story...

Elizabeth L. Gardner (1921 – December 22, 2011)  One of the first American female military pilots and member of the WASPS ( Women Airforce Service Pilots), having trained with Lieutenant Col. Paul Tibbets. She's seen here sitting in the pilot's seat of a Martin B-26 Marauder, which she flew expertly during WWII along with aircraft that towed aerial targets.
After the war, Miss Gardner worked as a test pilot and with General Textile Mills to design and implement aircraft parachutes.  She participated in at least two test flights with the experimental chute in December 1945. During both tests, she was forced to bail out of the aircraft when the parachute became tangled in the test aircraft. During the second incident, the aircraft entered a dive when its elevators were jammed by the parachute; Miss Gardner managed to escape from the cockpit and was only 500 feet from the ground when her own parachute opened.
In 2009, WASP pilots were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal through a unit citation.
The heroic Miss Gardner passed away in December 2011 in Manhattan, New York at the age of 90.

I just finished the series "kampen om tungtvannet" on nrk. I had no idea it was such an important part of ww2 but it seems almost no one talks or knows about it? at least we didn't learn anything about it in history class
I binged the series today because of this ask ✨ been meaning to do it for a while now
tbh though, the second world war has sooo many operations in so many different countries that all had an effect on the war in some way - many more Norwegian ones too. It would be very difficult to learn about all of them in history class 😅 series etc are great ways to learn about them though!
I'm not always a fan of Norwegian television, and there's a lot of bad stuff I cannot watch, but films and series set during wwii are always great? Kampen om Tungtvannet was actually really good, no complaints.
The series is about Norwegian people working with Brits at the Norwegian camp in Scotland, to bomb the heavy water factory back in Norway because the Germans want to use it to make an atomic bomb - something that would make the allies loose the war. There is also an American there for some reason who just wants to bomb everything as a solution 🤔

First of all, I like the specification that this protection is during lesbian sex. Yes, straight folks who wrote this deck of cards, that’s the kind of sex someone playing a game called The Ultimate Lesbian Conversation would in fact be having.
Secondly, protection from what? Lesbian sex doesn’t get you pregnant. What else do I need? A catcher’s mask? A beekeeping coverall? A lead bunker? A dental dam? Honey, we didn’t even use those in the 80s, we sure ain’t reviving that now.
If we were doing it outdoors I would wear sunscreen, so I guess my answer would have to be yes 😂

Masters of the Air is raw.
That’s the only way I can describe it.
I am only one episode in and I had to stop because it is so unbelievably raw that it physically hurts. It figuratively and literally pulls at my heartstrings.
I’m not attached to the characters, heck I don’t even know any of their names yet, but I think I’m okay with that because much like other military movies, people die. And they don’t die nice. It freaking sucks because it just doesn’t feel fair. This show is amazing, beautiful production and killer historical accuracy, but it’s just not fair because
51% of bomber aircrews in WWII were killed in operations.
Only 24% survived the war unscathed.
They are the true definition of flyboys, these men in their flying machines. They are so young and so full of life that it hurts to watch just knowing what lies ahead of them.
Tumblr media
But even though it hurts to watch, physically pains me to sit through every minute, I feel that I owe it to them. I need to watch this in remembrance of all those that served in those flying coffins and died as well as acknowledge what they went through to survive. I can suck it up and wrap myself in a blanket with my hood up, cowering on the floor leaning against the couch because if they can go up there knowing more than likely they’re not going home, I can watch a frickin tv show from my couch. If you can watch it, watch it.
