GMMTV 2024 Part 2, let's go
I've had my MULTIPLE cawfees and I'm watching the GMMTV Part 2 trailers. @my-rose-tinted-glasses, this one's for you!
TL;DR what I'm excited for: Ossan's Love with trepidation; Revamp: The Undead, I'm first in line; The Ex-Morning with open arms; Us, once we have a better sense of the screenplay; Sweet Tooth, Good Dentist, drop it like it's hot, Mark; Thame-Po, boys look gewd
****
1) Ossan's Love: THE KEY WORDS BEING "INSPIRED BY"
If I take away the inclination to do any sort of comparisons to the Japanese version whatsoever ("INSPIRED BY"), I'm thrilled that EarthMix get to do romcom. Earth at this level of baka is utterly unbelievable to me, you are too smokin' hot, boy, but try to bring it, because if you do, and it's a success, then I'll be fucking really impressed.
Tumblr media
2) Leap Day: Looks scary. Gun!
3) The Heart Killers: ...
Man. Man! First in muscle shirts and an earring, kisses pushed up against walls, etc. Where have we seen this before. Lemme guess, they all get together in the end. I would like to force myself to be excited about this somehow, Jojo on 10 Things, but. I haven't been there with JoongDunk yet, either, so actually, they seemed kinda refreshing against the FK vibes, ha. Anyway, this reignited my OF burnout, which I'm honestly trying to ignore as I get close to re-watching The Eclipse for my Old GMMTV Challenge project. @my-rose-tinted-glasses, my trust issues switch is flipped to "on."
(Get Jojo away from ships, please. He had Tay kissing Joss and Mild in the same year AFTER Dark Blue Kiss. He fucking doesn't need to use ships.)
4) Friendshit Forever: no subs, seems intense, the gals are smokin', NEW AND BOUN?! Hate to say it, but even without knowing what this is exactly about, I'm intrigued? My Boun! New and Boun!
5) Perfect 10 Liners: They're letting New Siwaj do 30 episodes, folks. I have no predictions on this one, y'all will have to tell me if it's good. Perth is back with New Siwaj directing after 2018's Love By Chance. If they give Chimon a little comedy, I'll be happy. I asked for Junior again, but maybe I wasn't expecting him to go to school, but I will admit I like JuniorMark together, and if they get to helm 10 episodes as the center stars, then good for them! Maybe that'll be the bit of this series that I watch.
6) Us: I believe in this screenplay more than how 23.5 is working out. I think Fon Kanittha needs more stuff on her plate to play around with to make a great show. This trailer was great. I'm watching My Precious the Series now (after having watched the movie this past weekend, which I was disappointed by -- the series is MUCH better, and going better than 23.5), and I'm seeing that Fon does stuff very well, background community building that gives us macro- and micro-level understandings of her characters. If those levels are Sing Harit, I'm here for it, that was an unexpected appearance, but if he's recalling the strength he brought to Todd in Not Me, then I'm a happy camper.
7) Hide and Sis: I love Piploy. Wednesday Club was a total holiday trash watch for me last year, but I loved her a lot. Looks like they're promoting this as a multi-generational show with known older actors, the approach of which I like. Everyone hates each other and maybe tries to kill each other; Keeping Up With the Thai Kardashians, maybe? Surprise, Gawin's a cop. Chimon as murderer, I'll support that.
8) Thame-Po: This looks cute. I'll consider a pre-order! Separately, I happen to adore cute Lego from LYKN, so good on those dudes for getting a show, and I like that William is pushing his boundaries outside of music.
9) Break-Up Service: I am happy that Off has gotten this kind of sneaky love romcom (?) role.
10) Revamp: The Undead: I'm here for it. I'm so happy for BounPrem. I'm happy to see some strong support dudes in Kay and Mark in this project. I haven't watched My Only 12%, so I don't know from Santa, but I know a lot of friends love him. I am totally seated. GMMTV is really the BL Machine, huh, absorbing this project.
11) Sweet Tooth, Good Dentist: Do not get me wrong, I am very excited about this; I am just wondering if Baby Ohm needs a little workshopping to get more diversity in his expressions. But I am very excited, Mark looks SO DOWN and ready to lead. View! Jimmy! I'm good with this.
12) The Dark Dice: High School Squid Game, I can't
13) The Ex-Morning: I gotta admit. This kind of moment is one of the reasons why I'm so happy doing the OGMMTVC. The big-ass smile I had on my face seeing KristSingto again, even though I really wasn't the biggest fan of SOTUS -- I've done a whole accountability turn on Krist after seeing him in Be My Favorite, and I appreciate that this show will go meta on the KristSingto background. It fucking sucks that Shadow sucked, because Singto is such a good actor, just seems like his scripts are here and there lately, but anyway. Aof Noppharnach writing this? Last Twilight ended cringe, but I'm still an Aof girlie, so I am 100% excited for this.
14) Scarlet Heart Thailand: That wasn't really a trailer, but considering the reputation the base story has in Asia and globally, I like, business-wise, what this means for GMMTV, a historical that will have appeal to multiple generations. I understand the original novel for this, Bu Bu Jing Xin, isn't translated into English, and that's a bummer, because it seems like this Thai version, which has already been dramatized in China and Korea, is based squarely on the novel. Fuck Win. These were the kinds of shows I loved as a kid when I watched Asian shows with my folks, so I have to admit that I'm intrigued, but I would have liked to see a meatier trailer.
That's it!

hey everyone ! this is a big update that I've been trying to properly put together for a minute. between the holidays, IRL work, general life management, etc - I simply have not been here. I've always been slow, but my presence here has basically been non-existent and I apologize for that.
TL;DR commissions will be closed and no new work will be accepted for at minimum two to three weeks, if not longer! I'm transitioning commissions to being a side-gig as opposed to my full time job, and it's been tougher than I expected. I appreciate everyone bearing with me! under the cut is a good old genuine word-vomit processing a lot of big feelings I've had the last month and a more in depth explanation of my current situation!
I appreciate everyone who has commissioned me over the years and that continues to do so! I'm excited to continue to create for you guys in the future, with a healthier work mindset and schedule! all is well, I'm happy and starting to do well, and happy holidays to everyone!
(this paragraph is solely me gushing about my job, I could do it for hours.) I really love my IRL job. (I've posted it before, but to those who hadn't seen, I work in a movie theater now!) this is genuinely something I can see becoming a full fledged career for me and I didn't expect that. I have so much fun, I leave work feeling fulfilled and appreciated, and I've become close with practically every member of our staff. my identity as a trans man is respected as well. I'm also already having more opportunities within the company being offered to me, and I want to put the proper energy into it.
that is why I've been taking time to rest when I can and not push myself to be here online if I'm not physically or mentally in the right mindset to create, or putting a time limit on myself to do so. my anxiety surrounding my finances is something I've struggled with for years. going into a paid, consistent position has been eye-opening and so healthy for me. I never thought I'd be able to accomplish that (I certainly wasn't fit to in the past) and I'm genuinely very proud of myself and happy.
I've revolved everything in life around commissions in previous years, and not always in the healthiest way. I've taken the last few weeks to re-evaluate my feelings and expectations that I and I alone put on myself to be here. my life has changed a lot this year. truly from the lowest of low, to a place that is happy and warm. it feels appropriate to be going into the new year with taking a new outlook on life and work in general.
while I won't be stopping commissions any time soon, as I said above, I've been struggling to break out of the mindset of this being my sole full time job that I rely on and transitioning it into more of a side job for me. so to start with making healthier strides here, I am not going to be accepting commissions at least for the next two to three weeks at minimum. I'm going to solely focus on the current list and get caught up when I'm free to, and re-evaluate how much of my time I can properly dedicate to commissions every week. I want to find a good balance of commissions, my career, and my home life - with, for the first time since I started, commissions taking the backseat.
thank you again to everyone who has been patient with me beyond reason, who has commissioned me, bought templates, etc ! y'all are the reason I've been able to get to this point in my life, and I will forever be unbelievably fucking grateful. and if you actually read all of this, thank you.

Stardew Valley!!! I love a lot about this spread but I wish I didn't use so many pen colors. This is another game I played before I even started journaling so I had to recall a lot of my older thoughts. Sebby's little corner might've been even bigger 😅 (Y'all might even guess where the name PumpkinSouppe came from, but it is also my favorite dish irl)
The Sebastian sticker is by ArcaneGoldArt! They have a whole collection of all the love interests.

Game Dev notes:
really good day/night + seasonal cycle with relation to player mechanics
great progression of unlockable events -- well paced
great long term achievements
amazing cooking mechanics and storage
no definitive objects, very choose your own adventure!
easy controls, nothing memorable
beautiful pixel art and boundaries
Summary:
One of my all time favorite games. It is the gold standard of farming games and even has one of the best fishing mechanics. I played this during the beginning of my health problem during senior year and it really helped me cope a lot. Although I didn't play multiplayer, my friend and I played at the same time. This game has so many cherished memories especially when I got to compare gameplay with my friend. Made by one man, this is such an unbelievable game. There's unlockable events after x amount of years that entice players to continue playing.; There's also no one way to play, for example I was a lot more introverted and only talked to a few characters whereas my friend played more socially. Maybe someday I'll continue playing to complete more achievements. My one gripe is there's a lot of responsibilities to get back into, so it's a little hard to get back into. It's one of the games I can recommend to everyone. It's hard if you makes it hard, cozy if you make it cozy, etc. Excellent designs, animation, gameplay, story, choices, etc. My worry is that this game is so well crafted I'm worried playing other farming games won't live up, I am so excited for ConcernedApe's new game. He is a major inspiration to start making my own games. I have also heard modded Stardew is really good and really worth checking out. All in all, a superb game loved by so many fans. Highly recommend.

Congrats on clearing out your inbox! 🎉🎉🎉 Way to go!
May I please request some slow dancing with Ingo & Emmet?
ahhh, thank you!! i'm quite proud of myself!! i've gotten down to around 70 or so requests now too! getting closer to sixty as we speak! it's v exciting for me (and a little unbelievable, tbh)
🍓🍓🍓
Ingo:
"Wise men say," Ingo croons into your ear, voice low and soft, "only fools rush in." Your steps are small, barely side-to-side, rocking together to the beat of the music. "But I can't help falling in love with you."
"Shall I stay?" You sing back, head rested on his shoulder. Ingo buries his nose in your neck. "Would it be a sin? If I can't help falling in love with you."
Ingo lifts his head, nose tracing along your cheek, and carefully slots your lips together. You cup his face, hands still a little wet from where you were washing dishes before Ingo swept you into the dance and serenade.
He dips you down some, smiling into the giggles you give. Your steps become less sure, more stumbling, but Ingo follows them without hesitation, his voice low and clear. "Take my hand," Ingo brings your hand in for a kiss, "take my whole life too," he kisses the rings that adorn your finger, "for I can't help falling in love with you."
Another kiss passes between you, warm and certain.
“Mama!” The patter of little feet scurry into the kitchen, whining of some perceived slight the other conspired. The moment of romance passes, fading into the domestic frazzledness of the every day life you both have built for yourselves. “Papa!”
Ingo chuckles as you fuss over the little twins grasping at your legs, his arms still snug around your waist. “I can’t help falling in love with you.”
Emmet:
It's not often that Emmet slows down this much, preferring to just rock you around the living room rather than trying to recreate a swing dance he saw in a movie once. Still, these moments, as rare as they are, fill him with a certain sereneness he can't seem to find anywhere else. The slowness, the closeness, all of it relaxes Emmet in a way he can't seem to manage with any other coping mechanism.
He supposes it's because he loves you. He loves you, he loves you, he loves you. He could shout it to the heavens if it didn't mean drowning out your voice in his ear, singing along to whatever song it is on the radio.
"That's when you need someone." You sing, the soft vibrations of your voice sending shivers through Emmet. "Someone that you—you can call. When all your faith is gone, it feels like you can't go on." You kiss his ear. "Let it be me. Let it be me."
"If it's a friend that you need." Emmet murmurs, barely recalling the words, and also not wanting you to stop. He presses his nose into your shoulder, breathing you in. "Let it be me." You sing, running a hand through his hair. "Let it be me."
"Let it be me." Emmet sings, a mere murmur in comparison to your voice. They're not the right lyrics, but he can't think past the blanket of your warmth around him. "Let it be me."
You kiss the side of Emmet's head, and he doesn't want this moment to end. He'd rock until his feet fell off if it meant getting to be like this for the rest of eternity.
🍓🍓🍓

I know irl they wouldn't end up together, but isn't that the beauty of fanfics? We get to make the rules. I know some people like angsty endings, but i don't get that. Like aren't we reading this bc we want to imagine a scenario that we get to be w/ this person who we wouldn't be able to be w/ irl? I will be very excited to read the final ch, no matter the ending. I truly hope the two of them are happy together in the end. (also im sorry if this comes across the wrong way!! I love this story!)
no need to apologize!!! i like hearing y'all's thots on what kind of ending you want to see for these two and why! i've seen a lot of people with this take, that we use fanfic for escapism and to get the ~happy endings~ real life so often denies us, which makes sense!
i feel like i see both sides personally. like, as a cancer sun / pisces moon i am constantly a coin flip between 'i want the sappy sweet romantic movie ending' and 'i want an ending that rips my heart out through my throat and makes me feel like i'll die alone' LMAOOOOO
hopefully it's obvious that i am not gonna give you the latter in this fic... bc i'm nice and also this isn't that kind of story 💀 (though that doesn't MEAN they'll end up together either 🧐) but there's always a push-pull for me in terms of making something ideal vs. real! i honestly like to try and straddle that line as much as possible bc i never want it to feel entirely ~unbelievable~ either way, you know??
so many thots 2 be thunk hehehe. this is so interesting to me! thank you for sharing your perspective 💜

Bread’s Game Journal 06/11/20: Playstation 5 Reveal Personal Highlights
Tumblr media
Sony's big blowout for the Playstation 5 was today, and it's something I desperately needed. None of us knew quite what would be shown, nor how much they would actually show.  Up to now Sony has been fairly stingy with games on PS5, preferring to talk about specs over anything we'd actually be playing, today that changed in a big way.  There were a lot more games shown during this presentation than I'm going to cover here, so be sure to watch it if you haven't had a chance yet!  Without further ado, i'm gonna go down the top 3 most exciting things, for me personally, shown during this presentation!
3. Demon's Souls, The Title I Will Never Say Correctly:
Tumblr media
I didn't play Demon's Souls back when it came out, it's a pretty big gap for me in terms of the From Software library.  I've heard from so many people I know that it's a shining paragon on the series right off the bat, with unique bosses, deadly locations and the same wonderful sense of overwhelming dread.  So frankly, i'm looking forward to finally playing this old game with a fresh coat of paint!  It may not be strictly new content, but it's absolutely something to get excited about right off the bat in this looming new console generation!
2. What's Up Danger? It's Me Again, Miles:
Tumblr media
Spider-Man: Miles Morales, is a game I never actually thought would exist.  Miles was a main character in Spider-Man on PS4 so I never thought he would simply vanish from the sequel, but for the sequel to be based on him entirely?  I am absolutely thrilled about all of this.  Miles Morales is easily one of the best characters in the Marvel stable, from the time he was introduced as the replacement Spider-Man in the Ultimate Universe way back in 2011, to the unbelievably great "Enter The Spider-Verse" movie from a couple years back.  From the sound of things, this isn't so much of a full sequel as it is a sort of mid sized game making use of a lot of existing assets and characters to create a new experience.  Think an Uncharted: The Lost Legacy situation, and hopefully the same level of quality!  It's also a big deal that this is obviously intended to be a launch game,  people have been wondering what day one looks like for a long while, and now with this in the picture I think we know exactly what it's going to be: more web swinging action!
1. What is Ratchet & Clank May Never Die:
Tumblr media
I can't believe it's 2020 and we're getting a brand new Ratchet and Clank game!  Not that this is that strange, Insomniac clearly loves their Lombax and Robot duo, and it's incredibly endearing that as a franchise it's stuck around this long.  I have vivid memories of getting the first game way back in 2002 on the PS2, primarily because I knew it was the "Spyro The Dragon People".  The series has just kept going from there, and this latest one looks like an extremely strong return to form!  The main gimmick of this entry seems to be falling through dimensional rifts that send you around to different times and places, most notably, totally seamless in their execution.  The entire concept of the dimensional rifts and some of the terrain deformation they showed off in the brief gameplay demo seems to be a big proof of concept for the power of the SSD that Sony has insisted is such an integral part of their new system.  If this is what a dev can get working with it this early in the consoles life cycle, imagine what they could do as time goes on!  It doesn't seem Ratchet and Clank will hit the PS5 in it's first year, they specified no date other than a vague "we'll talk more soon", so who knows when we'll actually get our hands on this one.  That said, that also gives us something to look forward to!
Now, Sony, be a bro and just accept the money I've been throwing at my computer screen all day.  Please, I beg of you, just let me pre-order one of these things!
Random Screenshot Of The Day:
Tumblr media
Resident Evil seems to be moving off from crazed hillbilly families,  and onto....witch covens?  Man this franchise is wonderfully absurd.
Stray Notes:
- There were so many more games I didn't cover here at that event!  Horizon: Forbidden West seems like the biggest one I've left out!  I had trouble getting into Horizon Zero Dawn but it's a franchise I really do want to love!  I should probably give that game one more try at least!
- If the event turned out to be uneventful I had a whole post lined up about this incredibly cute little Itch.io game I played today.  Y'all just gonna have to wait until tomorrow to hear about the absurdly cute little frog learning how to balet dance!

Tumblr media
Pairing: Avengers x reader, (Later on) Natasha Romanoff x reader
Warning: Endgame sadness, multi-verse-mind-blowing-shit, bad science, every Marvel fan's dream.
Summary: The reader is a senior in a local high school, watching Avengers: Endgame in cinemas when something absolutely mind-blowing happens.
A/N: This was just something I wrote up, I think it'd be so cool if anything like this ever happened. Hope y'all like it!
Part 2
———————————————————————
You tried to suppress your sobs, tears streaming down your cheeks and falling onto your lap. Your hand was clapped over your mouth, eyes never leaving the big screen that currently rolled the end credits of Avengers: Endgame.
You couldn’t care less about people judging you as you had a breakdown seeing Tony Stark’s clips in the past movies. Robert Downy Jr’s signature appeared slowly and gracefully onto the screen, your sobs becoming more cracked and broken.
Your favorite heroes were gone, and it didn’t feel like “just fiction” to you. It felt like a part of your soul was ripped out, mourning for your fallen heroes as if they were real people.
You stayed longer than you should after the films went off, everyone had already left. Afraid that someone would come in to rush you out of the cinema, you stood up in the now empty screen 03. But as soon as your weight shifted onto your feet, everything went black in a millisecond. You were already out cold by the time you hit the ground.
“Are we sure we got the right person? She looks so delicate.”
You slowly started to regain consciousness but was still unable to open your eyes. They were as heavy as lead, and so were the rest of your body. You felt paralyzed, but you could hear faint voices that sounded a bit muffled for whatever reason.
“She should be the Y/N Fury was talking about.”
“This whole multiverse thing was a little too big of a step, what if she freaks out?”
“Okay yeah, but like, can you believe that there’s a world where we’re not real?”
“Unbelievable. Very... Unreal.”
“Very funny, Stark.”
Fury? Stark? You must be dreaming. What a nice dream, though... You haven’t dreamt such a realistic dream about fictional characters like this.
"Y/N!" Your eyes shot up at the voice that could only be identified as Nick Fury's, suddenly attacked by the bright LED light.
"Glad you could join us."
You blinked a few times, eyes slowly adjusting to the room. Your eyes grew wider and wider as your gaze moved from all the techy stuff in the back, to the Avengers in their casual clothes, to Nicholas J Fucking Fury.
"No fucking way." Your hands gripped the cotton bedding, the slight scratch of the fabric on your skin ominously real. You had silk bedding you snatched from a feral girl during black Friday, nothing like this. It was like you were really feeling the material in real life.
"Hello, Miss Y/N. And yes fucking way." Your eyes looked like they were about to pop out of its sockets as you backed up, Fury taking two steps closer to the bed.
"You're scaring her." Steve Rogers... Or Chris Evans? The guy that looks like Captain America remarked, looking down and shrugging as if saying that he could do better. The gray V-neck shirt fitted him perfectly, reminding you of a photoshoot that Chris did, and that's when you had a bright idea.
"You guys... It's not funny! Am I being filmed?" You figured that the cast was doing some PR for the movie, pranking a fan... haha. You glanced around the room, looking for a hidden camera.
"She thinks she's being tricked." Wanda Maximoff- or Elizabeth Olsen, appeared from behind Natasha, her hands glowing with the scarlet energy, strands of her hair floating in the air.
"This is awesome! How are you guys doing this?" You almost exclaimed, so excited to see this in real life. You'd always thought that this was CGI.
"This isn't a joke, Miss-uh, Y/N. We, um... pulled you out of your universe?" Bruce spoke up from beside you, stopping his fumbling with the machines you were hooked up on. "You know that multi-verses exist. We're- real, Y/N."
You couldn't form words at that, your mind unable to comprehend how this made sense. For all you know, this could still be a prank, and you could be dreaming.
"She's still skeptical." Wanda was now suddenly somehow beside you, the flowing ribbon of energy connecting with the side of your head now.
"You have been... chosen. Yes. Chosen. By the freaking universe, you get that?" Tony Stark, now took a step forward, patting down on the snow-white comforters as they made a deflating sound. He pointed at the ceiling, speaking as if it was the most spectacular thing in the world.
"I don't understand-" You stuttered, beyond confused.
"We found the multi-verse after the snap. They brought me and Nat back from those separate worlds. And we kept on working, you know, on this multi-verse thing." Tony rambled, but you heard every word. This did not seem like the typical prank videos that you see on YouTube.
"And then we found you." Tony's finger now pointed at you, creating goosebumps on your arms. Like something had just happened, you just didn't know what it was.
"You see, Miss Y/L/N, you were disrupting the order of the multi-verse. You weren't meant to be born there. You're the only person in the whole multi-verse to be born into the wrong world." Fury leaned on the edge of the bed, looking into your irises with a stern look on his face.
"This is your real home, but if you want to go back, we understand," Natasha said calmly, smiling at you understandingly. "We are asking you to throw away your whole life, everything you've ever known... to come here."
"You guys are all I've ever known. Yes." You soon found yourself agreeing. All you were ever going to do in your life before was go to college and get a job. Your life was dull and high school was crap. It made sense. Oddly, everything kind of made sense.

Be My Player 2? Ch. 27
Happy season 7 y'all!! My emotions were pulled in about 10 million different directions over the course of 13 episodes and if any of y'all need some emotional healing, hopefully this can help haha.
I'd also like to take a minute to say that earlier this week, this fic celebrated it's second birthday and it's unbelievable to me that this fic is two years old and has come so far. The response to this has been absolutely incredible and I'd like to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to read it and here's to many more chapters as I continue this story!
Also on AO3!
Keith breathed a sigh of relief when he walked out onto the floor of the restaurant and spotted George behind the bar. He’d spent all morning working on homework and he was practically braindead, knowing he’d have no energy to deal with persistent coworkers if he’d been stuck with Kayla on his shift.
George looked up as he approached and smiled. “I was starting to think you weren’t going to show.”
Keith stifled a yawn and swung around behind the counter. “Sorry. I’m not trying to be lazy on purpose. Getting back into the swing of school has just been tougher than usual so I’m really glad you’re the one I’m working with tonight.”
“Thanks, I guess?” he said with a chuckle as he set a drink on one of the available trays and picked up a new ticket. “I feel like I should be insulted by that.”
“You shouldn’t be,” Keith said. “I could use a friend around while at work.”
George paused, his eyebrows furrowing. “Everything’s okay with you and Shiro, right?” he asked.
Keith blinked and grinned. “Yeah, of course! We’re doing really great actually and are probably going to watch a movie after I get off tonight. Although with how I’m feeling I might fall asleep before we even get started.”
George relaxed. “Good. I’d hate for the two of you to be having relationship troubles on top of all the other stress you’ve got going on.”
“Nah,” Keith said fondly as his brain sifted through memories of his boyfriend. “We’re really good. I’m just waiting for Spring Break to get here so I can see him again.”
“How are you handling being separated?”
Keith let out a breath and readied the bottles for the drink he was making. “The first few days were rough. It’s gotten a little easier since we both have things we have to do, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t rather have him around.”
George nodded. “I can imagine. Vacation will be here before you know it and you’ll be back together again.”
“Yeah…” Keith said, more than a little wistfully. He glanced over at George and saw his knowing smirk, snapping him out of his thoughts. “School and work will make it feel like time flies by. I won’t have a second to spare to sit around and miss Shiro.”
George chuckled. “Yeah, hold onto that. Don’t let yourself lose that spunk. You’re going to need it.”
“Don’t I know it,” Keith grumbled.
George grinned, and they continued working in silence. Keith was glad to give his brain a little bit of a break from any form of mental strain. He could pretty much make every drink in a daze at this point. He didn’t need to focus on his work as much as he did when he got started as a bartender since the craft was second nature to him now.
Maybe he could convince Hunk and Pidge to buy a ton of booze and he could mix drinks for them. It probably wouldn’t get them drunk as quickly as straight shots of vodka and tequila, but he knew it would be fun nonetheless.
The night and the orders coming in were slow for a Saturday, but Keith wasn’t complaining. It was better than a rush they couldn’t control, and he hoped it would last for the rest of the night.
George passed him a glass as he pulled bottles of alcohol from under the counter, mixing the drink before setting it next to the ticket on the tray. George took his dirty mixers and dumped them into the sink, sticking his hands into the soapy water to start washing as Keith hung to the side and waited for the next drink to come in.
He sighed and crossed his arms, eyes roving over the few tables of patrons he could see from his place behind the bar. He let his mind start to wander now that he didn’t have anything to focus on.
~~
Keith dug his hands into his jacket pockets as he slipped out of the back door of the restaurant. The sky was dark, and the kitchen staff were doing their last rounds of cleaning before they got to leave for the night. Keith didn’t envy that kind of work when he got to leave so much sooner than they did. He also didn’t have to come in as early since they had kitchen prep, too.
The snow and salt that was still left on the sidewalks crunched under his feet as he walked back to his place. For once, he wasn’t in much of a hurry and the cold wasn’t bothering him too much despite being in the throes of winter.
Keith’s head tilted back, and he looked up between the buildings. He couldn’t make out any of the stars and the moon’s light was muted behind the clouds that hung over the city. It was supposed to snow again that night and he hoped it wouldn’t be too deep when he had to leave for work the next day.
His breath puffed out between his lips and he turned his gaze back to the sidewalk. He walked past a few strangers who were out, but they all kept to themselves, eyes focused on the walk in front of them. Keith didn’t mind. Interacting with strangers was one of his least favorite things to do.
Keith pulled his keys from his pocket as he jogged up the steps to his apartment building. He unlocked the door and pushed inside, the warmth of the building enveloping him like a hug. He hurried up the stairs to his floor, knocking the lingering salt and snow off his shoes before he walked into his place.
He threw his coat over the back of the couch and started stripping out of his work clothes as he walked into his bedroom. He changed into a pair of broken-in sweats and threw on a hoodie. The cold hadn’t been so bad when he was outside, but a chill still managed to linger in his bones now that he was in the confines of his home.
He pulled the sleeves of his hoodie down so they were almost over his hands and grabbed his computer, climbing into bed. He pulled his blanket around him as he started up his laptop and snuggled down inside the fabric. It was slow to start, and he drummed his fingers on the casing as he waited for the different programs to load.
Keith’s phone vibrated next to him and he picked it up, smiling when he saw it was Shiro texting him.
Shiro: You home?
Keith: Yup. I’m getting my computer set up now.
Shiro: Great! I’ll get rabbit set up and you can join my room when you get on there.
Keith: Sure
He leaned forward and adjusted the pillows behind him before he slouched down, trying to get more comfortable. His computer felt so slow and he wanted everything to load so he could get to Shiro.
Finally, after too long, he was able to open his web browser and pull up rabbit. There was already a notification waiting from Shiro and he clicked on it, taking him to Shiro’s room where Netflix was up on the screen.
He clicked on the mic, impatient as it took a couple seconds to calibrate and connect properly.
“Hey,” he said, probably a little too gruffly.
“Hey, baby,” Shiro said. “How are you?”
“Tired,” he sighed.
“Busy night?”
“Not really, actually. It was pretty slow. At least for me and George. But the amount of homework I had this morning and then work was a strain and I’m exhausted.”
“I’m sure it’ll get better.”
“Yeah,” Keith sighed. “I’m just ready to spend a nice night with you and watch a movie. I’ll warn you now though that I might fall asleep.”
Shiro chuckled and it made something warm curl in Keith’s chest.
“I think I can forgive you this time,” he said. “Are you going to be busy tomorrow?” he asked.
“I’ve got work tomorrow night, but my morning should be free. What’s up?”
“Well…” he said, and Keith could hear the grin in his voice and thinly veiled excitement. “I figured since we’re getting close we should book your plane tickets.”
“Close being a relative term?” Keith asked with a chuckle.
“Close in terms of needing to make travel planes,” he said.
“Okay,” Keith said. “It’s a date.”
“Not a very romantic date,” Shiro grumbled.
Keith shrugged even though he couldn’t see him. “It’s the best we can do right now. But if you really want something romantic, we can watch a rom-com tonight.”
“Eugh,” Shiro said and Keith could almost see his grimace. “No thanks. I think I’ll be the nerd I am and watch some sci-fi.”
“Took the words right out of my mouth, babe,” Keith said, letting himself sink back into his mattress. The cold was starting to recede, replaced by a strong warmth that spread from his chest.
“Does this mean I get to pick the movie?” Shiro asked.
“Sure,” Keith said, grinning. “But you better make it good.”
He watched as Shiro scrolled through Netflix, going through the shows and films suggested for him. He clicked on one and read the description.
“This sound good?” he asked.
“Sure,” Keith said, unable to stifle a yawn.
Shiro chuckled and hit play. “Don’t fall asleep on me.”
“No promises,” Keith said, lazy grin pulling at his lips. “You’d physically have to be here to stop me.”
Shiro hummed as the intro to the movie started to play. Keith was more focused on the sound of Shiro’s voice than what was happening on the screen in front of him. “If I was there with you then I wouldn’t mind letting you sleep.”
Keith huffed a laugh. “And why’s that?” he asked.
“Because,” Shiro said. “I’d be able to hold you and watch you sleep. I’d know you’re getting the rest you need and not working yourself to death.”
The warmth in Keith’s chest spread. “Well, you’re just going to have to trust me for now.”
“I know,” Shiro sighed. “And I do, but…”
“But?” Keith prompted.
“But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t much rather have you here with me.”
“And I’d much rather be there with you,” Keith agreed. “But we still have another month and a half before that’s going to happen.”
“Keith?”
“Yeah?”
There was a pause, the only sound between them coming from the movie on the screen.
“I love you.”
Keith smiled and snuggled further under his blanket. “I love you, too.”
Shiro’s laugh was soft and sounded giddy. Keith was feeling the same.
“If you get too tired, let me know and I can shut off the movie and let you sleep.”
“Okay,” Keith said.
He looked at the screen but wasn’t really seeing what was going on. Not that it mattered all that much.
~~
Keith grumbled when his alarm went off. He reached for it, swatting his hand on the bedside table until he found his phone and was able to pick it up to shut it off. He yawned and rubbed at his eyes, trying to fight through the lingering sleep that wanted to pull him back to his dreams.
He forced himself to sit up and sat there, looking around his room as he tried to get his thoughts in order. There was a chill to the air that he’d been able to ignore under the blanket and he wrapped his arms around himself, wanting to fall back into bed go to sleep.
He grabbed his hoodie he’d discarded the night before and tugged it on, crossing his arms over his chest as another violent chill moved through his body.
“What the hell,” he grumbled, climbing out of bed. He flinched when his feet hit the wood floor and cold seeped into the bottoms of his feet.
He tiptoed over to his dresser and pulled out a pair of socks, awkwardly balancing to shove them onto his feet. He hurried into his living room and checked the thermostat, gaping when he saw the temperature was under forty degrees.
He rushed back into his bedroom, snatching his phone from the bedside table before dialing the number for the superintendent.
“Hello?” he asked, voice obviously tired.
“Hey, it’s Keith and the heat-“
“Say no more,” he sighed, interrupting. “The heat’s out in the whole building. I’ve put in a call to have the maintenance crew come in and they’re going to get here as soon as they can. The snow’s pretty bad outside and they have to come across town so sorry to say that it might be a few hours.”
Keith blinked. “Oh,” he said. “Okay. Thanks.”
“Of course,” he said. “Is there anything else you need?”
“Nope, that’s it.”
“All right,” he said. “Call if you need anything else.”
“Sure,” Keith said, ending the call. “This is going to be fun,” he grumbled to his empty apartment and sighed. He could at least be grateful that he still had electricity.
He shuffled into the kitchen and started rummaging through the cabinets, searching for something to keep him warm. He found a can of instant hot chocolate mix and set a pot of water on the stove to boil. As he waited, he retrieved his computer and several blankets and set them up around the couch to have somewhere warm to retreat.
His phone buzzed as he was mixing the boiling water with the hot chocolate mix into a large mug. He absentmindedly stirred the mixture with a spoon, picking up his phone to find a message from Shiro waiting for him.
Shiro: Morning, babyyyyyy
Keith smiled and carried his phone and hot chocolate into the living room, getting comfortable among the blankets before he replied.
Keith: Cold morning
Shiro: Awww, need someone to come warm you up?
Keith: Yeah, actually. The heat’s out in my building
Shiro: Shit
Keith: Yeah, it’ll hopefully be fixed by the afternoon, but the snow we got was bad and I don’t even want to think about what the roads look like
Shiro: You got anything to keep you warm?
Keith: Lots of blankets and hot chocolate, but that’s about it. I’m kind of wishing I had a space heater, but I don’t even know where I could go buy one or if I’d even want to go outside when I don’t have to.
Shiro: Sorry
Keith shrugged even though Shiro couldn’t see him.
Keith: Can’t be helped. The best I can do is deal with it. I’ve got work later so that’ll give me somewhere warm to go if the heat’s not on soon.
Shiro: You at least ready to book your plane tickets?
Warmth bloomed in Keith’s stomach that had nothing to do with the hot chocolate he was drinking. He bit his lip, excitement spreading through him.
Keith: Definitely.
He reached for his computer and nestled it over his blanket covered legs, clutching the warm mug close to his chest. His phone started to ring, and he answered it quickly, cradling it between his shoulder and his ear as he typed in his password with one hand.
“Hey,” he said, keeping his attention on his computer that was booting up.
“Morning, babe,” Shiro said. “Have you looked at any prices yet?”
“Nope. I’m just getting my computer powered up now, so it could be a minute or two before I can get on the internet. The one good thing about this morning is that electric is still working. I really don’t know what’s up with the heat.”
Shiro hummed. “Yeah, that is kind of strange… Maybe there’s a short or a connection slipped.”
Keith sighed. “I guess we’ll find out,” he said, taking a sip of his drink. He opened his web browser. “Okay, what airport am I flying into?”
“Melbourne International Airport,” Shiro answered.
Keith hummed, typing in the airport and the flights there from Chicago. “These aren’t bad,” he said, scrolling down through the list of flights that was only a couple hundred bucks for round trip tickets.
“What time do you think you could get in?”
“Well, I can finish up my classes on Friday and pack that night and leave Saturday morning. I’d get there in the middle of the afternoon, but I could stay until the next Sunday if you’re okay with me staying a little over a week?”
Shiro chuckled. “Do you even have to ask?”
“I just want to make sure,” he grumbled.
“I’m perfectly fine with you staying that long. Hell, I’d welcome it. I’ve missed you so much that I want to spend as much time with you as I can.”
Keith bit his lip and felt his chest warm despite the cold that permeated everything around him. “I’d have to get a noon flight back,” he continued after Shiro’s words had hung in the air too long.
“That’s fine. I’m good to take you there and pick you up whenever you need it. My schedule’s a lot more flexible than yours was.”
Keith smiled. “Okay, give me one second. I need to grab my wallet so I can pay for these.”
Warm butterflies exploded in his stomach. He hadn’t even thought about it much before now that this was actually happening, but now there was no mistaking the face he was going to fly down to Florida to see his boyfriend. It was something he never would’ve expected to happen in his life.
“I’m going to put you on speaker, okay?” Keith asked.
“Sure.”
He hit the speaker button and set the phone to the side as he started booking the tickets. He typed in his personal information, grin getting wider as he reached the bottom of the page and put his payment information in.
“Okay,” he said softly before clicking the payment button. “It’s done,” he said when the confirmation flashed. “I’m officially coming to visit you over spring break.”
“Make sure to send your flight numbers and info to me,” Shiro said.
“Don’t worry,” Keith said, picking up his phone. He took it off speaker and leaned back against the cushions, eyes still locked on his computer. “I’ll get all of that to you later.”
“Hey, Keith?” Shiro asked.
“Yeah?”
“You’re coming to visit me.”
He breathed a laugh, chest ready to explode. “Yeah. Yeah, I am.”

An English Blizzard- Part 5
Warnings: Kinda nsfw (not really that bad to be honest) swearing? I can’t remember
A/N: Now I know I said ‘five parts’ but y'all are getting six because I love you all that much! 😅😁
—————————— Chapter 5 ——————
After spending the night at your dads and Sebastian’s house, you rushed home as soon as you possibly could to jump in for a shower and get ready.
When you arrived back at your apartment it was empty so you could shower in peace. You threw on a cosy jumper and jeans and put on boots that would withstand the snow and ice on the pavements.
You checked your watch and noticed it was almost twelve so you rushed downstairs and to the street where Greg would be picking you up. He pulled up five minutes later in a bright red mini. You got into the car with a huge smile in your face “Hi.”
“Hello,” he greeted and leaned over to kiss you “You ready to go?”
You nodded “Yeah, where are we going?”
“I’m going to introduce you to someone,” he winked and you went wide eyed, gasping as you grinned.
“Am I meeting Cooper? I’m meeting your dog today?!”
Greg could help but smile at your excitement. His jaw was aching from smiling so much. He nodded and you clapped your hands in delight “What are you waiting for?! Drive!”
Your happiness was infectious and Greg couldn’t wait to introduce you to his dog.
He didn’t know how something so little could make him so unbelievably happy. “Are you ready?” He asked.
“I’ve been ready since I saw the photo of him like a week ago!” You bounced on the spot. Greg opened the door and you heard the tapping of claws as Cooper ran through the house to greet you and Greg. He pounced on you and you fell to the floor in a fit of giggles as you pet the dog. “He’s the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen!” You squealed and looked up to Greg who was lightly pouting “Oh come on don’t look at me like that! You know you’re never going to win against this adorable face!” You scratched the back of coopers ears and placed a kiss on his head “He’s gorgeous!”
“Hmm…whatever you say. You want to watch a movie?” He asked.
“Sure!” You smiled and he helped you off the floor. Greg pulled you in close and placed his hands on your hips before wrapping his arms around you and tightly hugging you. He lead you through to the living room and sat you down on the couch. He set up the DVD while you removed your boots. He joined you on the couch and lay back, allowing you to rest your head against his chest as the rest of you lay between his legs.
“This is so relaxing,” he hummed and you nodded, lazily tracing circles over his shirt with your finger.
You looked up to him and he leaned forward, kissing you almost teasingly. You shuffled yourself up a bit and kissed him forcefully, he let out shaky moan and it made your lips tingle from the vibrations. Greg’s hands began to wander and he grabbed your hips, pushing you up off of him so he could sit upright.
Greg pulled you back towards him and you wrapped your legs around his waist whilst sitting on his lap. He pulled away and gently brushed back invisible pieces of hair behind your ear “Does it not worry you that I’m…old?” He asked with a hint of sadness in his voice.
You felt your heart aching hearing his words and the tone he used to speak them in. “Does it not worry you that I’m Jim’s daughter?” You asked.
Greg shook his head “No it doesn’t.” He kissed you again.
“Well then you just took my words right out of your own mouth. Age isn’t a factor that bothers me and besides you’re not that old. You’re less than double my age.” You smiled and pecked his lips. You saw a wave of relief wash over his face.
“Yeah but I’m two or three years away from being double your age,” he let out a snort of laughter before kissing you again.
“It doesn’t bother me…” you breathed out and cupped his face. Greg ran his fingers though your hair, as he brought your mouth to his again. He playfully bit your bottom lip making you gasp and giggle. His hands went wandering to under your jumper, it sent chills down your spine as he gently caressed your skin.
Greg tugged slightly at the hem of your jumper and you pulled back. You bit down on your lip and gulped before slowly peeling off the fuzzy red jumper. Greg’s breath hitched as he ran his fingers over your exposed skin. He stopped when he reached your bra straps and moved his hand to take it off.
“Greg…” you stopped him and he looked up at you with worried eyes.
“What’s wrong? Do you want me to stop?”
“No,” you laughed and glanced to the side before returning your gaze to Greg “The dog’s watching…”
You both looked over to an oblivious Cooper and burst out laughing. “I know a place where he can’t watch…” he trailed off and you stood up. He got up off the couch and took your hand in his, leading you to his bedroom with a smile.
Greg opened his eyes to a bright room, the snow falling outside made it look almost clinical. He felt the space next to him was empty and propped himself up on his elbows, wondering where you had gone.
But when he looked up to the window he smiled.
There you were sitting perched on the frame, wearing one of his shirts with nothing else but bright yellow fluffy socks that could bring sunshine to even the gloomiest of days, frantically writing as if your life depended on it.
“I didn’t want to wake you…” you softly whispered while still writing “But I had a brainwave and I had to jot it down.”
Greg lay back on the bed again, looking at you full of admiration. Your body against the snowy, white backdrop was like looking at a work of art.
“You were very inspiring…” you trailed off and glanced up to him with reddening cheeks and disheveled hair.
“Sex with me was inspiring?” He asked with a voice full of amusement.
You nodded with a bashful smile and continued to write. Scribbling the words; Blizzard of feelings…a snowflake is never the same, neither is my feelings for him each time or the way it feels when he touches my skin, even if his fingers have been there before.’
“What are you writing anyway?” Greg curiously asked and craned his neck slightly in attempts to see.
You turned to him and placed down the piece of paper and pen “Something about the weather and feelings. Interlinking them. Was just a moment of 'Post-great sex’ inspiration” you smirked and stood up. You noticed him eyeing up his shirt on you.
Greg extended his arms and you joined him on the bed again, allowing him to engulf you in a hug “That shirt suits you…” he whispered and kissed down your neck.
“I still have your scarf,” you breathed out before letting out a small moan under your breath as his lips brushed over a sensitive part of your neck.
“It’s yours, you can keep it. Looks better on you anyway.” You smiled at his words and joined him under the sheets once more with a giggle as it continued to snow outside. The coldness that lingered out there could never burst the bubble of warmth you shared with Greg under the covers.
“It’s been weeks and we still haven’t met him, Y/N. If not before Christmas, when?!” Mary asked as she scoured the library with you before she and John left to go their parents for Christmas break.
“You’ll meet him one day…” you sighed and took out a book from the shelf, glancing over the cover before realising you had read it before and put it back. You walked the length of the passage once more and continued looking at books.
“Yeah but I want to meet him now!” She whined and placed her head on your shoulder as she took out a book. “Oh hello Professor Lestrade!”
Well…she got what she asked for.
You tensed on the spot and felt your mouth dry up. Greg was looking directly at you with wide eyes and a smile between the small gap the book used to reside in “Hello Mary and hello Y/N.”
You loudly gulped but Mary was to busy conversing to notice. “Oh you remember Y/N?” She asked with a large smile.
“How could I forget?” Greg smirked and your face burned. You turned away and continued walking, Mary and Greg-who was on the other side of the wall of books-followed. “What are you two lovely ladies up to today?” He asked.
Mary answered “Just helping the book nerd here-”
“Hey!” You cut her off with a nudge.
“I’m also trying to find out who her boyfriend is. She isn’t telling anyone a thing!” Mary complained.
Greg looked at you with a knowing smirk and you furrowed your brow at him “Well technically he’s not my boyfriend…” you trailed off with a playful smirk. You looked up to Greg though your eyelashes who had a face riddled with confusion. You continued with a coy smile “He hasn’t asked me if I’d like to be his girlfriend…”
Greg opened his mouth but it snapped shut when he realised he was still in Mary’s presence. “He will of he knows that’s good for him…” Mary trailed off and you looked up to Greg with a 'That’s you told’ expression on your face. Mary’s phone rang, much to the annoyance of the librarian on duty “Oh that’s John!”
You engulfed her in a hug “I’m going to stay here for a bit but I hope you and John and all your family have a lovely Christmas.”
“I hope you have a good Christmas and new year too, you too professor,” she smiled at the silver haired man who wished her the same “Okay I’m off! And remember Y/N no peeking at your presents!”
“Don’t you or John attempt to look at your gifts then! Bye Mary!” You waved her off with a smile. You turned to Greg as soon as she disappeared though the doors “Hello professor…” you purred and slowly walked to the end of the aisle, meeting Greg at the end who glanced around before wrapping his arms around you.
“Don’t call me that here, you’ll just be asking for trouble…” he huskily whispered and gently bit your ear. You quietly giggled, trying not to draw attention to the two of you.
“You have a professor kink? I’m sorry to tell you that it doesn’t surprise me,” you playfully smirk and Greg growled under his breath “Do you fancy a going for a coffee?”
You walked along the banks of Thames hand in hand, your coffee in the other. It snowed the other day and there was little white piles dotted along the edges of the streets.
Greg stopped for a moment and pulled you into an alleyway “Greg what are you-” you were cut off by his lips crashing against yours. The only onlooker was Big Ben that had chimed as it struck five in the afternoon. Your coffee as slipped out your hand and your heels had raised slightly.
Greg pulled back slightly “Would you like to be my girlfriend?” He asked as he gulped down air.
“Yes,” you smiled and nodded “Yes I really would!”
You crashed your lips to his again, full of delight. Greg balanced you by placing his hands on your hips, but he was discreetly pulling you closer to him.
“Y/N?!”
You pulled away when someone screamed your name. You and Greg paled as you turned your heads to a very confused and extremely angry Sebastian.

11 Indispensable Pieces of Advice from 2016's Best Cinematographers
Prepare to be more than just a photographer
When asked what the biggest misunderstanding about cinematographers was, John Toll was quick to respond that the job always demands more than people could ever know.  "They don’t realize everything we do," he explains. "Because there’s a lot to the job, more than just being a photographer. Incredible organizational skills, you’re a manager, you’re an organizer, that’s all part of the job."
Depending on your director's style, you might have to fill in the blanks
It's no secret that every director has a different style, and as a result, different aspects of the film shoot that they tend to put more emphasis on. "Sometimes you work with directors who really don’t care about what the film looks like so much and others are much more attuned to visual imagery," Caleb Deschanel remarked. "So you have to adjust yourself depending on what the director is really interested in." For the cinematographer, this is two-fold. You have to make sure you've accomplished what the director is most interested in, while simultaneously picking up the slack on any area where their focus may be missing.
Let the director's drive fuel your drive
Time and time again, from screenwriters, directors, and producers alike, we hear that you should only set out to make a movie if you really, really have the ambition to do so. Mr. Deschanel agreed. "The reality is that you really want to go in and meet a director and have him draw you into their excitement and enthusiasm for the project they're doing. You need to have that, because to make a movie, you have to have an incredible drive and enthusiasm for something." As director, you're going to be the leader on that shoot, and if you're not giving it 100% all the time, your crew is going to follow suit. "You can’t let it wane," Deschannel insisted. "No matter how many problems you have along the way. You have to just keep going. So it's wonderful to have a director like that."
As a director, you need to have your DP's back
When he took the job for Arrival, Bradford Young knew two things: he loved Denis Villeneuve and he had zero experience using heavy VFX. "The challenge was like, when I’m totally clueless and I don’t know what the hell is going on, can I look at you say 'I don’t know what’s going on?' Can I trust that you will say, 'No problem man, let's hand this off to someone else.' Being vulnerable, and being able to be honest and saying, I don't know. I'm not sure if I trust this. I'm not sure if this is actually working. I'm not sure if this is the way to do it. Or the way we would do it if this wasn't a heavily visual effects environment." It was a lot to reckon with, but in a healthy collaboration, these sort of problems are a non-issue. "I knew that Denis would be supportive in that sense," Young went on to explain. "To know that I would have support in that way was really important.”
Ask yourself how where you come from influences your own unique and personal vision.
Don't forget what makes you a valuable storytelling asset
Charlotte Bruus Christensen, who worked on both Fences and Girl on A Train this year, grew up on a farm in Denmark. She attributes her fascination with light to working in the stables of her father's pastures.  "You bring something of yourself," she pointed out. "You come from somewhere and even though we are trained to adapt to a script and a story and a director's story, you always get something from home that I feel that you offer the story, and that is what you use to adapt." For your own work, you should ask yourself how where you come from influences your own unique and personal vision.
Don't hang on to a specific take
When asked if they've ever gotten upset that one of their favorite shots wasn't included in a final film, it was the most experienced DP of the group who was quick to laugh. Deschanel admitted that, while it may feel great on set, there are so many other factors that contribute to the final decision that you have to be ready to shed any attachments to specific takes. "It’s interesting about the right take," he began, "because I think initially a director will pick a certain take and then you get in the editing room, and as the scene evolves, you find that actually another take has a certain kind of emotion that you want more but didn’t realize it at first. It’s a very fluid process."
Don't sign on to project if you're not comfortable with its director
A lot of us may not be at the point where we're receiving a ton of requests from directors to interview for their projects yet, but when the time comes, it's important not to be overeager. In fact, as John Toll sees it, "It’s a two-way interview because you need to feel that you’re the appropriate person for that job." In that mindset, you need to have certain strategies in place to learn quickly about your collaborator and their vision. "In a way, you need to encourage the director to express all this, what is this, what are their ideas, what are they trying to pull out of a piece. And sometimes you’re not the appropriate person for that picture. So it’s important to know that before you start shooting."
No matter what your preference is, the medium should always fit the project
Caleb Deschanel has been around for both film and digital. If you watch the whole discussion, it's not hard to see which medium he prefers, but that doesn't mean it's the right medium for every project. "A problem I always had with digital is actually photographing faces, because you have to be really careful about how sharp an image is," he explains. "I mean the thing I always liked about film is that each frame is different, so the fact that one frame goes to another and the grain is in a slightly different place is actually much more forgiving for the human face. It actually gives you a certain quality that I find really fascinating."
As time moves on and technology improves, however, it's better to embrace than resist. "John shooting [Billy Lynn] at a high frame rate and projected at high frame rates and 3D," Deschanel admitted, "that's what artists do, they take a technology that somebody brings to them and they explore it and see what they can do with it. And sometimes you succeed remarkably. And sometimes you fail. But that's the process.”
"Film vs. digital is a conversation going in circles, and it’s become kind of a self-destructive one too."
The film vs. digital debate may not be dead, but it needs to evolve
At this point during the roundtable, the age old film vs. digital debate flared up and things got a little emotional. Bradford Young staunchly supports the democratization of film, a phenomenon which leaves everyone with an opportunity to tell their story. "I think the whole universal conversation about digital vs. film...This idea of pixels of information, how much is there, how much isn't there? It’s a conversation going in circles and it’s become kind of a self-destructive one too," he laments. "It’s not the medium. It’s what anchored in it. Finding your voice, finding your language, that’s the real struggle. I’m interested in having a conversation about why film could be a revolutionary venture in our evolution as human beings. I think we keep getting caught in the conversation between ARRI and Sony, and all they’re doing is providing us with the stuff and saying 'Y'all do whatever you want with this stuff. I can’t tell you.' The conversation should be how do we anchor it into something that gives us feeling? How do you bring feeling? That’s the most important thing."
Be open to the possibility of mistakes
In today's film landscape, there are an unbelievable and ever-growing number of ways to ensure that no one on your set ever makes a mistake. Monitors, in particular, ensure things are captured exactly how they should be, with little room for accidental artistic magic or mystery. Christensen believes that all this expensive tech may actually be causing more harm than good. "Sometimes it’s like, oh man, that little bit of feeling of not being in control. And then sometimes there's a mistake. But that mistake adds something. Sometimes not being in control, by having the monitor village and having all the buttons that you can go and check and see and do and try it, is a good thing.”
Her argument is that it really takes you out of the process. " Sometimes I don’t want to try out. Right now I just want to be here with this scene and this idea," she concluded.
Like it or not, the DIT is now a key cog in the machine
With such a wealth of post-production tools available, the DIT has clearly become an integral part of any production. And why not? The ability to manipulate a shot so it looks better in post should be an incredible thing, right? Well for La La Land's Luis Sandgren, the idea is a scary one. "I am very nervous about the DIT," he admits "Because I don’t want it to look any different than what I intended. That’s my biggest fear. To me, the DIT is one-third of the possibilities of what you can achieve with the look of a film. I think whatever you do on set, so little of it should actually have to do with a DIT.  The more you do there the more you screw up the image from how it was captured."
Rodrigo Prieto, however, has a much more open mind to the situation. "I think DIT is kind of a two-edged sword," he explains. "I loved the possibility of continuing the creative process into post production and being able to tweak the image to a certain extent." Of course, even a DITs work can't be the fix-all end all solution. "I try to put it in all on camera because, contrary to belief, you can't re-light a movie even in the DIT. No matter what you do, the position of a light is the position of a light and the character of the scene. Certainly, you can do a lot," he said.  What's most important is to be there through the whole process to ensure your vision isn't tampered with. "I manage the movies I make if I have to do a DIT or not, and I've turned down work to be able to do this. Because it's such an integral part of the whole process. It's like missing pre-production and going straight into a movie. It's crucial."
John Toll agreed, "The only way that cinematographers can guarantee their original visual intent is to carry it through to the completion of the picture. And we have to be there to basically participate in that process. Sometimes there are well-intentioned people who get involved in that process who feel they have better ideas about how the film should look. But we as cinematographers need to be there and guarantee that what people are seeing at one point is what was intended. You can't phone it in. You have to be physically sitting there. Because you have other layers of producers, other layers of studio people — their job is to basically finish the picture. So it's good to have a clear distinction of who's doing what."
