Koushun Takami's notorious high-octane thriller is based on an irresistible premise: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing. Criticized as violent exploitation when first published in Japan - where it then proceeded to become a runaway bestseller - Battle Royale is a Lord of the Flies for the 21st century, a potent allegory of what it means to be young and (barely) alive in a dog-eat-dog world. Made into a controversial hit movie of the same name, Battle Royale is already a contemporary Japanese pulp classic, now available for the first time in the English language.

book review || Horrid by Katrina Leno
Wow, I really liked this! The creep factor definitely matched with the cover.
This starts with a creepy poem that I’d heard many times when I was younger, but never the entire thing! That set the unsettling tone and then Leno’s writing style backs it up, making this a very quick read. The pacing is fast, keeps you engaged, and there’s a strong atmosphere created that really sucks you into the dreary setting. Definitely think this would have been a perfect read for November.
The setup of the plot isn’t the most original, but the layout around the initial poem and the different themes brought up do help to set this book apart from others like it.
I think the characters were maybe the weakest link in this book. Apart from Jane, most seemed pretty standard and single note background characters. Jane, however, was pretty interesting to read about and as we move closer and closer toward an answer, I was more intrigued in seeing her reaction. She comes across as mature and level-headed, but we learn about her flaws and understand just how horrid she can be sometimes.
The ending reveal was handled in a clever way. There are enough clues there that you can put things together, but I think the author wrote the unveiling in a way that still made it surprising and spooky. And then the finale? Wow, I didn’t expect this to go there, but I actually really admire Leno for taking that jump, although I know it won’t be everybody's cup of tea.

So, uhh… I’ve almost finished Part I of my first horror novel. Looking like I might break 50k, but it’s gonna be pretty close.
On its own, it’s shorter than both my previous published works by a decent margin. BotC was 73k, and I believe SotS was about 84k. (And of course, Blackbird was nearly 150k, but that hardly counts.) So this one is pretty short by comparison.
But it also definitely stands well on its own. It’s got a clear and complete plot, all three MCs have full arcs, and I think it wraps up really nice. So…
I might just… go ahead and look for a publisher? I dunno yet. I mean, I don’t think the low word count is a total dealbreaker. I mean, it’s longer than Fahrenheit 451 and HGttG, so it’s not like being short devalues it or anything.
I dunno, I need to think about it. But I gotta say, I’m really, REALLY excited for everyone to meet these characters. I think you’ll really like them.

Ten years have passed since Felicity ‘Tea’ Greene was forced to flee her rural hometown of Blight, pursued by a baying mob and persecuted as an ‘AfterWitch’…
During the intervening decade, Tea has worked hard to build a new life in the city, honing her occult skills and trying her best to forget her bad experiences. But can she ever truly escape the past, this longing to contact those she lost? After all, if she has made such a clean break, why is she drawn to the séances of a shady spiritualist group and their star medium, Mr. Forest-Wood?
Rather than the comfort she was seeking, Tea instead receives an otherworldly message from ‘Nanny Joan’, the recently deceased guardian of her estranged cousins, pleading for her to reach out to them. Yet she has not visited the twins in years; they never really liked each other. In fact, Tea always dreaded staying over in their old dark house. So why return now? Especially as she is sure her childhood visits ended abruptly due to something bad happening, something so upsetting she has blocked it from her mind ever since. Although…weren’t there rumours that the house was haunted?
As Tea battles to piece together long buried memories, and master the triggers to her mental health, she begins to realise the only way to move forward is to go back one final time. To confront whatever it was that so frightened her in the past…

You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron
Genre: Young adult horror This was my first horror book and I had to start with YA because i needed less the scare. This was a good for me I think because it wasn’t scary scary. They were a few gasps for me but overall especially in the first half of the book it felt more like a suspense story. The first half introduces camp mirror lake where people pay money to be scared. The main character…

A collection of short stories about having bigger problems than finding the perfect dress for prom night.
This is very much a product of the mid-2000s. Five of the best known YA romance writers of the time contributing to a horror/romance anthology. These stories are mostly romance with paranormal elements.
1) The Exterminators' Daughter - Meg Cabot. A very Buffyesce story of a vampire slayers' daughter hunting a vampire at prom.
I generally enjoy Meg Cabot and this is a fun story with a sweet romance. (3.5 Stars)
2) The Corsage - Lauren Myracle. This is the only story that is more horror than romance and the only one that has an ending. The warning "be careful what you wish for" was made for this story.
The plot and resolution was chilling. The dialogue was poorly written and the heroine simply ignores several warnings. (3 Stars)
3) Madison Avery and the Dim Reaper - Kim Harrison. New girl in town ends up meeting a handsome stranger at prom and things go downhill from there.
This story feels the most incomplete. Madison is not a very likable heroine and there's far too much exposition. This really serves as a prologue to Kim Harrisons' series and not a stand-alone. (2.5 Stars)
4) Kiss and Tell - Michele Jaffe. Miranda Kiss has incredible powers, few memories and a knack for getting into trouble.
This is more a superhero story, not really horror. Miranda is a fun heroine and there's plenty of excitement in the story. (3.5 Star)
5) Hell on Earth - Stephanie Meyer. Angels and demons try to influence a high-school prom.
First off the name Gabriel Michael Chirstensen is so on the nose for a half angel it's liable to give you a nosebleed. Then Gabe being able to make a full-blooded demon lose their powers just by looking at them is sever overkill.
There are some truly horrifying background happenings with a boy bringing in a weapon and a girl being influenced to go back to her abusive ex. (2 Stars)
Altogether a solid 3.5 stars.

Can’t Wait Wednesday | August 24th
Can’t Wait Wednesday is a book blogging meme hosted over at Wishful Endings. It’s to discuss and spotlight books that you’re excited about but that you haven’t read yet, to get you more excited about your TBR pile! It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, which is hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine. I first heard about this meme from Kappa at Kappa Reads! Dead Flip by Sara Farizan 272…

So we all know and love those two panels of Mario and Peach having dinner and then leaning in for a kiss from that one weird Club Nintendo comic, but I feel like the panels that immediately proceed them are just as cute and worthy of recognition, so please admire them with me.
