What is the Hymen? Myths & Facts!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hymen! Let's take a closer look at what it actually is and what it DOES and DOES NOT mean when it comes to sex. The hymen is the tissue that lines the entrance to the vagina and comes in a wide range of shapes and sizes, both normal and abnormal. Force and rough activity can damage the hymen and cause it to tear.
I'm sure a lot of you have heard things like "popping the cherry" and "you'll bleed the first time you have sex" and "you can tell they're not a virgin". But these phrases are routed in lies and myths and this misinformation is really damaging to people; young women and girls especially.
These myths normalise things like pain during sex and bleeding during sex - this is not normal and shouldn't be expected! Sex should feel good for EVERYONE involved, even if it's your first time, experiencing pain can be an indication you're moving to fast or you're not ready for that experience.
These myths perpetuate the ideology of 'virginity' as a tangible thing that is to be 'lost' and 'taken' and you can tell when someone is or isn't a virgin. This in turn contributes to heteronormative narratives, a.k.a. you can only 'lose your virginity' through penetrative P in V sex. (On a side note, I prefer the term 'sexual debut' as this includes all types of sex and is determined by oneself)
All this to say, the hymen is just another part of our beautiful human anatomy and it deserves all the love, care and respect for doing it's job - keeping vaginas filtered and safe from debris! It is not something to be torn or broken and DOES NOT reflect your sexual history!

Tumblr media
I wanted to send you all some positive queer energy this Friday! And to say thank you to everyone who has been following and engaging with my blog so far! I love sharing my illustrations and RSHE (Relationships and Sexual Health Education) work and it means a lot to see the positive responses!!! 🥰
Binders give freedom! 💚 Freedom from gender and chest dysphoria! 🤍 Freedom in self expression and to wear the clothes you want! 💜 Freedom to be your true self!
I'm still working through my backlog of content to post on here but I also wanted to ask if anyone has any RSHE related topics they'd like me to cover? Is there something you wish your school sex-ed had covered or topic you want some more clarity on? Perhaps there's a contraceptive method you'd like more information on? A sexual health concern or some advice on relationships? Whatever it is please comment and I could add it to my list of topics to cover! Thank you!

All you need to know about cervical screenings!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All you need to know about your cervical screening or 'smear test' appointment. If you're like me and have recently turned 25, you may have received a letter saying it's time for your first cervical screening! But what is it for? Who needs it and what actually happens during the exam?
💗 This exam is for anyone with a cervix, this includes trans, non-binary, intersex and other GNC folks! Please note that if you are GNC and your medical records have changed, please double check with your GP that your medical records state you are applicable for this exam as sometimes you can be missed and you wont get notified for your next screening, you will need to arrange it yourself.
💗 Hopefully this little guide will answer some questions and give you some tips for how you can best prepare to make this exam less daunting. If you have any further questions about your cervical screening, please speak to your GP or sexual health clinic! 😊

Awareness for HPV
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HPV refers to a group of viruses that can cause genital warts and cancers, the viruses are passed through genital to skin contact of any kind and most cases do not show any symptoms. However there is a vaccine which protects against the really harmful viruses that cause genital warts and cancers.
If you live in the UK, and are a woman or AFAB, you've probably already had your vaccines at school! But as of recent, schools are now vaccinating both girls and boys or all of their students. As boys and people assigned male at birth are also at risk from these viruses and contribute to the transmition of the viruses. So in order to protect more people from these harmful viruses, more people need to be vaccinated.
If however, you have not received your HPV vaccines (regardless of your sex or gender), you can still get the vaccine! Just visit your school's immunisation team, your GP or a sexual health clinic or a HIV clinic.
For more information and guidance, please speak to your GP, or a sexual health clinic.

Contraception 101 - the IUD vs the IUS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's talk about contraceptives, in detail, starting off with the IUD and IUS! Whilst the two have many similarities, there are some notable differences and pros and cons to each.
In short, the coil is a great contraceptive for people who want something that is effective and low maintenance! But it is important to remember that the coil DOES NOT protect against STIs so you may want to use condoms for your safety.
For more in-depth info and advice on if you are eligible for the IUD or IUS check out the NHS guidelines:

Current mood...
🩸 Did you know severe stress can delay your period? When you're feeling really stressed or anxious, your body might delay your period as sort of a "I can't deal with this right now" response. However this sometimes backfires as anyone who menstruates knows, a late period can cause more alarm and stress!
🩸 An occasional late period is normal, but if your period is more than a week late it might be time to take a pregnancy test.
🩸 If you frequently have late or irregular periods, please see a medical professional

LGBTQ+ History Month - Alfred Kinsey!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second instalment of the LGBTQ+ Historic figures for this month is Alfred Kinsey! Sometimes referred to as the father of sexual liberation, his studies, whilst shocking at the time helped launch sexology as an in-depth field of study and helped us gain a better understanding of sex and sexuality in humans! How cool is that?!
Whilst the term 'bisexual' as we know it today wasn't popularised until after Kinsey's death, his biographies and testimonies from his wife and peers confirm the Kinsey had sexual relationships with men and women.
The Kinsey scale helped demonstrate how sexuality is a spectrum and not a strict black and white structure. The scale (which ranged from 0-6) was later adjusted with the addition of 'X' to represent no sexual reactions. Obviously each persons' sexuality is nuanced and unique, and doesn't necessarily need to be condensed into a graph, but Kinsey's initial studies helped break though previously very rigid, heteronormative and conservative beliefs around sex, which is amazing!

LGBTQ+ History Month! - Marsha P. Johnson
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's LGBTQ+ History Month! So lets celebrate by looking at some more historic figures who were part of the LGBTQ+ community! Starting off this month with Marsha P. Johnson! She was an icon, known for her activism in gay rights, particularly on the exclusion of black and trans folk as well as homelessness within the LGBTQ+ community.
But despite her unwavering kindness and the recognition she received for her work in social justice - a lot of which has come after her death - she experienced immense hardship, abuse, discrimination throughout her life and uncertainty surrounding her death. She deserved better. Trans people deserve better.
R.I.P. Marsha P. Johnson
To learn more and get involved, you can check out the Marsha P. Johnson Institute which is dedicated to supporting black, trans folk across the US
P.S. - I love doing these kinds of posts so if you have any more historic figures you'd like me to cover, please suggest in the comments

Which contraceptives are vegan?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those participating in Veganuary or anyone else who is interested, let's take a look at contraceptives and what vegan options there are available (UK edition!)
People may choose a vegan diet and/or lifestyle for a number of reasons, which we should respect and not demand an explanation too, but what are the options when it comes to contraception?
💚 If your main concern is avoiding pregnancy, you should use whatever method is right for you body and you should prioritise your health and safety. Check the guide above for options!
💚 If your main concern is avoiding STIs, there are loads of vegan sex produce brands out there that make vegan barrier methods like condoms, and dams, check the guide above for recommendations! Some of these brands can be found in supermarkets and drugstores, and they all have online shops too!
💚 If your main concern is using strictly vegan contraceptive methods, your options are much more limited but if this is a viable and safe option for you, that is you (and your partner(s)) decision to make.
Please remember, contraception is a shared responsibility so discus your options with your partner(s) to find out what your goals and thoughts are!

Pansexuality!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
💖 Let's take a look at the term 'pansexual' and what it means! And thank you to anon for letting me interview them on their pansexuality and sharing the phrase 'hearts not parts', I think this is such a lovely phrase!
💛 So to recap, pansexual (and panromantic) refers to someone whose sexual and/or romantic attraction towards others is not limited by sex or gender.(definition from stonewall.org originally) Pansexual can be an umbrella term, encompassing other sexuality terms like bisexual, omnisexual and polysexual - to name a few.
💙 Anyone can be pansexual, it does not correlate with your gender identity! Why not check out the pop culture list to find some celebrities and fictional characters who identify as pan and discuss the pan experience! If you have any additional recommendations please sound off in the comments!

Can you get pregnant on your period?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Happy new year folks! ✨🎉💖 I hope this year I develop a more consistent upload schedule and continue to deliver inclusive, informative and illustrated sex ed! Thank you to everyone who has followed and interacted with my posts so far, it really means a lot to see people engaging and discussing these topics!
So, if you're having sex on your period, what is there to consider? Do you need protection? Can you get pregnant? The answer is YES!
YOU CAN GET PREGNANT IF YOU HAVE SEX WHILST MENSTRUATING!
This is because sperm can live for up to several days inside the body, so if you have unprotected sex, and a new egg is released, there is still a chance it can be fertilised and a pregnancy occur.
👶 If you ARE trying to conceive, using period tracking apps can help you find when you are most fertile and have a better chance of becoming pregnant. Apps like Flo, Glow, Clue and Femometer are popular and often free to use.
❌ If you want to AVOID pregnancy, please use contraception, even when on you period! Condoms are always recommended as they are the only contraceptives that will protect you from STIs AND pregnancy.

Sex Toys! - Butts edition ✨🍑
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sex toys can be a great addition to your personal and/or partnered pleasure, so let's take a look at sex toys specifically for butts! Whether you're just starting out or a seasoned enjoyer of anal play - or just curious to know more! - here are a couple of tips to remember for a safe and fun sex toy experience.
🍑It's really important to make sure you're using a toy that is designed properly, this means a flared base or handle so you can easily retrieve your toys as the anus has a tendency to 'suck in'. If you're a beginner, start with smaller shapes and work up to whatever you are comfortable with, go slow 😊.
🍑LUBE! The anus does not self lubricate really so you need to provide the lubrication for a comfortable experience. Make sure your lube and sex toy combo are compatible too! (no silicone lubes with silicone toys)
🍑If you're using toys with a partner, please use condoms and wash your toys to avoid STI transmission. Be especially careful if you're going from the anus to the vagina with a sext toy and clean it or use a new condom to avoid UTI contraction.

Vaginismus! Lets talk about it! What is it and why does it occur?
Vaginismus is a condition that affects people with vaginas, it is the body's response to a fear of penetration. There are number of things that can cause vaginismus but it can be treated. Why not check Netflix's Sex Education series, where the character Lily Inglehart experiences it.
Having vaginismus can be an incredibly stressful and uncomfortable experience so it's important to listen to your partner(s) or anyone who confides in you with this information. And if you are experiencing vaginismus, please know you're not alone and there is help and treatment out there for you. 💗
