Ship or Sink: James and Lily(from Harry Potter)?

HOW did you know I was just thinking about this last night when I couldn't sleep? And planned on (eventually) writing a post on it.

Overall: ship, but only because James grew as a person after Lily rejected him and he thought "dang I better shape up". He was a bully, harasser and priveledged. He thought he was better than sliced bread because he was intelligent and great at sports.

But he also had good qualities, like loyalty and learning one of the hardest transfiguration spells ever just to hang out with his bff. Overall, those good qualities took over and made him a good person, husband and father. Although I was SHOOK reading that as a kid it ended up being good character development for Harry. He didn't walk around thinking my dad was perfect! It was a good foil for him.

Lily was always open hearted and accepting from the start. I think that yes, there's angst and sadness she didn't end up with Severus because he always loved her and never stopped, but ultimately she couldn't be with him because Harry would never have been born and fulfilled the prophecy. I don't think she would have been happy with him anyways (idk in an AU where only James died and Lily and Harry survived?) because as much as they had in common with being outsiders and soft hearted people (yeah, Severus wanted Harry to win after all!), the choices/sacrifices Severus had to make would have taken way too much an emotional toll on Lily. I'm sure there's a great fanfic that pulls through that and proves me wrong, but that's how I feel atm.

Hi. I had an idea for a neat HP one shot/drabble prompt, if you are interested. I would understand if you aren’t interested in it, but regardless here it is=

Jily(James and Lily Potter)lives/muggle prompt/AU, ‘all a dream?’: “Harry! You are awake! Oh thank god”

“M mum? D dad? You are alive? Was it all a drea..”

“Son, you have been in coma for a while”

He had been asleep for a while… a while being 4 months and two weeks and 6 days.

Harry’d been hit in the head by a book, when he’d gotten into an argument with his friend Ron. Unfortunately, Harry fell backwards and had hit his head on the corner of his bedpost.

The force had fractured the back of his skull- just over his parietal lobe… after rushing him to hospital, his parents had seen him for all of two seconds before he went into surgery.

Ron was a mess, and Harry’s girlfriend and best friend was worse. Hermione kept yelling at Ron for his stupidity, and Lily had to send Ronald home.

Surgery had gone well. EEGs came back with heightened brain activity, highly indicating dreaming and imagination being present. There was only a tap of impact on his parietal lobe. The surgeons expected him to make a solid recovery, but were slightly concerned about writing not being the same.

James and Lily agreed that they would rather have their son never write again, than him be dead, and they cried when the surgeons told them that surgery went well.

4 months, two weeks, and 6 days later, Hermione is sitting in the bed beside her boyfriend, typing on her laptop.

Lily is asleep on her husband’s lap, on the inflatable mattress they purchased, and James is chatting with Hermione on Harry’s latest labs.

“He seems to be making progress. They’re thinking he’s going to wake up soon!” James exclaims, excitedly.

“I’ve been doing some research, and based on his heightened EEG levels, they’re thinking that rather than being able to hear us, Harry is actually having a dream that is so strong it mimics reality.” Hermione frowned, looking down at Harry, whose brow had furrowed for some reason.

She softly brings her finger down to poke at the bunched up skin on his forehead. “Please wake up, you idiot. I love you, but I will kill you before this thing does.”

Hermione is met with a further scrunch, including his nose. She wouldn’t have given it much thought, except for the fact that Harry’s mouth started to move like he was yawning. That’s new.

“James? He’s seriously making faces. Could you call in the nurse?”

“Alrighty!” James perked up, and gently moved his wife from his lap, to rest on the pile of blankets beside him. He skipped out the door, when Harry’s eyes started flickering like he was dreaming.

“I miss your eyes. Can you open them please?” Hermione whispered, moving her hand to cup his chin. Her response is a seriously scrunched face, and a raspy voice.

“Burr-ite.”

“He’s awake?!” There’s a crunch coming from the air mattress, the light is shut off, and Lily’s on Harry’s other side. Her hand reaches out to stroke his hair.

“Seems like it! Harry, love, can you hear me?” Hermione whispers.

“I got the doctor!” James yells, throwing the door open and striding into the room. “Any change?”

“L-ow-d,” rasps Harry.

“Bloody hell! He’s awake!” James exclaims, rushing up to beside his wife.

“I need you all to move away from the bed, so that I can look at him closer, please,” the doctor says, pulling his scope off of his neck.

The group moves away, and Hermione gracelessly drops her laptop onto the mattress. After what feels like hours, the doctor turns to them and says, “he’s fine. Let him readjust.”

Hermione is the first there, and she slips her fingers through his hair. “Hey handsome. Good to see your eyes again.”

A quirk of his lips. “Mione. What am I doing here?”

“Ron gave you a bonk.”

“Harry! You’re awake!!” Lily shouts, going onto Harry’s other side. James creeps up behind her.

“L-ow-d,” Harry whispers again.

“Oh I’m sorry, honey. You’re awake!”

“M-uh-m?” He rasps out. “Duh-add?”

“Yes, honey, we’re here. You’re okay.” Lily replies.

“Th-aw-gh-t yu-ew we-er d-eh-d,” Harry states, his words chopped and stuck. Likely a result of the impact of waking up, and possible aphasia.

Hermione and Lily share a glance. His raised EEG levels were in fact due to a hallucination.

“You were out for a while, honey.”

“So… I dreemed it?” He slurs out.

“Yes, son. You dreamed it.” James says, putting his hand on his son’s.

“‘S go-od. Was a we-ird dre-em.”

Turns out, Harry hallucinated being a wizard, which sent Lily into a laughing fit. Harry told her that he had fought some bald snake man with a stick, and married Ron’s sister.

Harry told Hermione that she’d married Ron, and she was splitting a gut with laughter. Though they had all been friends as kids, Ron was far too irritated with Hermione and vice-versa.

James and Lily weren’t too concerned about the concepts in Harry’s dream. They just kept asking him what the hell a huddle poof was.
