Fandom Ships are like Oreos.
There are many different ways to have them.
Some people like them together.
Some people like them separated.
Not everyone is going to like the same things together, the same way not everyone likes them separate.
Oh yeah, and some people just like to milk all of the thick, white, creamy material that they can out of the situation. Those are always the interesting ones.

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS
As an abuse victim, this post means SO INCREDIBLY MUCH TO ME. I have NEVER been angry at Ozpin, not once. I understand what it’s like, and I’m tired of hearing hate from people who have never experienced something similar to Oz! I wanted to make a post about this so freakin bad, but was unfortunately afraid of how I would word my own story. So thank you so much, SO MUCH for explaining this perfectly!!
OZPIN IS AN ABUSE VICTIM: THIS IS WHY
Let me just start by saying I am not an abuse victim. I have no personal experience as an abuse victim. However, Ozpins past with Salem, and his current situation, as well as the victim-blaming language used by the fans and rwby gang when talking about him reminds me of the kind of language you see people use with abuse victims. I’ve wanted to make a post about this for a long time, just to properly explain how he is an abuse victim, so hopefully I managed to communicate this like I wanted to. Please know I did as much as I could to hopefully present this in a way that is respectful and informative. If any part of this isn’t, someone with more authority on the subject is welcome to correct/add on. Also, I tried to include as many examples and argumentative points as I could, including good points brought up by others who’ve spoken about this topic, so hopefully this covers mostly everything.
Let’s go back to the very beginning, and look at Salem herself. She was trapped in a tower, by her “cruel father”, someone who treated her like a possession to be locked away instead of a human, completely isolated, with no one else to talk to. No one to form any kind of relationship with at all, so I think I’m in the right to assume that greatly inhibited her social skills and as a result she lacked the knowledge of what a healthy relationship with another human being was supposed to look like. She learned to care only about her own needs. She never had to consider anyone else in the time she lived in that tower. Plus, again, the isolation and how that could have impacted her psychological state is still something to consider. So even before she meets Ozma, we’re not off to a great start in terms of mental stability and such.
This next part is meant to show that even though this was Salem’s experience, Salem wasn’t a good person even before her grimmification.
After she and Ozma escape the tower and he later falls ill and dies, she demands of the gods to bring him back, without even considering that this might not be what he actually wants, or considering if this is best for him. She fights the very gods of her world simply because they won’t give her what she wants, so she sees conflict as the only option. The gods themselves recognize her complete lack of compassion and selflessness when they say “But it is clear now that your selfishness and arrogance have led you astray.” Once the gods have punished her by making her immortal, she doesn’t try for Ozma’s sake to learn humility and restore balance to the world and herself, instead she acts spitefully and starts a full on war against the gods. She lies to humanity, sacrifices all of their lives for her own selfish cause (ironically, something people accuse Ozpin of, no, this is what your thinking of). And she does this not for her true love, not for someone other than herself, but just to see her own wish come true for the gods to suffer out of spite.
When she and Ozma eventually reunite and she tries to persuade Ozma to go along with her plans (which, remember, was to become this worlds gods and subjugate the rest of humanity.) We can clearly see he disagrees and is uncomfortable. She speaks eloquently about what the world will look like, her version, her plan, without any of Ozma’s input, treating him more like a tool that can help her achieve her goals, and all while still withholding the truth that it was her who caused the gods to leave Earth. (Yes, he withheld info as well, I’m not saying he’s completely blameless).
When she does convince him of her plan, we hear her say (repeating from earlier in the episode) “how the hearts of men are easily swayed.” It’s plain she wasn’t just persuading him, but manipulating him into going with her plan (manipulation is abuse!) People don’t seem to get this, but abuse isn’t just physical. You can be mentally abused and emotionally abused, and the thing is, counting this time and everything else, we see Salem abuse Ozpin physically, mentally, and emotionally all throughout the episode.
So I’ve hopefully made it very clear the writing is there for manipulation and abuse. Now, taking a brief detour, a lot of people ask, why didn’t he speak up initially? My questions are in response to that: Because he was afraid of her? Because he knew deep down that she might turn violent if he outright refused? Whatever the reason, yes, he should have spoken up. I’m not saying Ozpin has never made mistakes in his life. He’s a flawed person and I’m not saying he isn’t, but right now I’m focusing on why he is an abuse victim.
During the scene when Ozma realizes that what they’re doing is wrong, and that this isn’t the paradise Salem said they would create together, he comes clean and tells her the whole truth. Salem however, doesn’t come clean. She doesn’t reveal that it was actually her that caused the gods to leave and wipe out humanity. Not only that, but the moment Ozma disagrees with her, she turns on him (no hesitation), trying to place the blame on him (victim-blaming) by saying this is what he wanted.
This is one of the big points that makes me question how some people don’t see their relationship as abusive. They were in a relationship, married, kids and everything. Yet, Ozma feared for the safety of their own children and himself while with her, so much so that he thought it would be safer to try and escape than stay. He must have known that Salem would be beyond reasoning and wouldn’t react well to him refusing her wishes. And he was right.
When he tries to escape with the children, as many people have noticed, it’s very reminiscent of a scene of a victim sneaking away from their abuser. And when he gets caught, I’m just going to put this in bold in case people didn’t catch the memo the first time they saw it, she burns him to death. Right after she’s just murdered their children in front of him. With no remorse whatsoever. Again, no remorse, no regret for killing their own children. *Sigh* She literally proceeds to (only out of spite!) try and chase him across generations in a hate-fueled revenge quest while simultaneously trying to wipe out humanity along with any allies/friends that he’s made on his journey to try and redeem himself.
Side-note: Listen to me, please PLEASE STOP blaming Ozpin for that. Like, actually, how could he have predicted any of that would happen? How could he have possibly predicted the lengths to which his ex-wife would go to simply because he disagreed with her and decided to leave her for his own wellbeing’s sake? The truth is, he couldn’t.
Ultimately, whether the writers meant to or not, they wrote Salem and Ozpins’ relationship as abusive. Emotionally, mentally, and physically abusive. So, shout it louder for the people in back:
OZPIN. IS. AN. ABUSE. VICTIM.
But people don’t want to seem to accept that, and as far as I can tell, the two main reasons for people ignoring the blatantly obvious abusive relationship are:
1. He’s a man, and for some reason lots of people don’t want to believe men can be abused.
2. He was abused by his wife. A woman. People don’t think those two things can actually happen so they try to deny the fact that Ozpin was abused.
Not to mention, aside from, you know, all of what I just said, their relationship has been compared to Adam and Blake’s on a number of occasions. You can clearly see the parallels with both cases of abuse with the manipulation, the inability to empathize and take into account others feelings, the attempts to destroy everyone who they’ve formed close bonds with, the victim-blaming, etc. And that makes team rwby’s actions even worse. Because immediately after witnessing all of the horrific trauma that he had to endure all over again, from the death of his kids to his own deaths while reincarnating, team rwby decided to victim-blame him and shun him. Then the fans just decided that was okay I guess because (and I say this obviously sarcastically) they’re our protagonists, which means they’re correct all the time, right? Volume 6 was when I stopped watching the show because of this. Legitimately, what can you do when the hypocritical main characters force an abuse victim to relive all of their trauma, blame them for it, then punch a 14 year old child along with the abuse victim while the fandom denies they’re an abuse victim at all?
I actually hate that I had to go back and re-watch this episode to put this together, it literally makes me so sick, especially knowing that instead of supporting Ozpin as an abuse victim a lot of fans just hated him more after this episode. I used to hold out hope that the characters would realize how they treated Ozpin was wrong and recognize their own hypocrisy, but this far in I don’t think that’s ever going to happen. I just pray most of all that they don’t take the ‘Salem Redemption Route’ and try to redeem an abuser. But hey, the show’s managed to disappoint me every time so far, so I don’t exactly have high expectations. Any who, hope this explained the issue at least fairly coherently.

Fav Oscar moment?
Oooh! Amazing question, and also one of the hardest! 😆 Hmmmm, I think my favorite Oscar moment would be when he was being tortured by Hazel, and he decides to take control from Oz no matter what it meant for him. I think it was just so incredibly brave, and even though I feel like a lot of his character development is off screen, I can no doubt see where his personality and determination levels have changed! I was just so proud of him, and he is so strong for being able to handle what I couldn’t at that age! The fact that he is choosing to do all of these heroic deeds and not deciding to give in and go back to his aunt (not that he has much of a choice) makes him so incredibly strong, and I’m so proud! Thank you for asking this question, and I’m sorry that the response was so long! 💙💙💙
