#arthur #curious george #adventures in babysitting #curious george came on and the niece was living for it #and i think i was having more fun than she was #it was the donut episode #which i'd seen snippets of before but apparently not the whole thing #it was a riot!#george accidentally orders a thousand donuts and solves the problem by just eating the last zero #he wonders how he's gonna solve the problem of the hundred boxes and he just #takes one box of donuts and books it!#and gets chased down the street by a crowd of cheerful donut-bearing bakers #and then i see the next ep is credited to joe fallon so i look up who could have written the donut one #sure enough it was joe!#it's amazing how reliable this is #and this came after experiencing several surprisingly funny late episodes with ken's name attached #and as for pete #i've got rants about that man's worldview #i don't think he's stepped outside a city in his life #under his reign we get an episode about a little free library #on the renkins farm #i repeat #a little free library posted ON A DIRT ROAD!#you could not have made a DUMBER choice for such an episode #half of the show is set in a city!#it would have made sense there!#you've even established there's a largish country town nearby at this point in the show #that would at least make more sense #but this is downright boneheaded

you know how one of the few banger episodes of s7 was the one where they saddled Dean Winchester with the teenage daughter of a missing hunter and made him lose his entire shit when confronted with how young she was to be inviting herself along on such a sketchy and dangerous case? and also, you know, the inherent horror and obnoxiousness and agonizing half-inexperience of Being Fifteen. and then just let him marinate in the psychic damage of finally glimpsing a mirror he wanted to protect from the life he lived instead of smash to smithereens

.......yeah i think SPN should've done a child vampire episode. and made it all about the deep deep uncanniness of a ten-year-old saddled with this violent misshapen shadow version of an adult's life experience. maybe just for spice toss in something about living into chronological adulthood but not being able to shake the weirdness of missed/mismatched development and aspects of the self that are still frozen in time? like, we are NOT talking IWTV Claudia being rightfully furious she can't fuck, we're talking decades spent on this godforsaken earth with the impulse control of a fifth-grader.

and, crucially, AVOID belaboring the metaphor about kids forced to grow up too fast. just stick Dean in front of the funhouse mirror and watch him bark at his own reflection in horrified semi-awareness.

The Christmas Chronicles parallels with other Chicago movies

The bulk of The Christmas Chronicles takes place in Chicago, and I love all the references it makes to famous 80s and 90s movies that also take place in Chicagoland!

The Home Alone booby traps:*

The Ferris Bueller's Day Off car jump:

The Adventures in Babysitting innocent teenager getting kidnapped and taken to a garage o' thieves:

The Blues Brothers prison concert:

The Santa Clause police interrogation:

*There are also some additional, more subtle nods to Home Alone. The heartfelt one-on-one discussion about personal failings at the big church with Christmas hymns playing in the background. The boy who asks Santa to see his lost family member(s) again, goes to the tree excited for this gift, thinks Santa hasn't delivered this gift, is crestfallen, and then suddenly the lost family member(s) appears and they get to connect with them again.

The Christmas Chronicles was produced by Chris Columbus, the director of Home Alone and Adventures in Babysitting, so I can see where some of the fascination with Chicago movies comes from. I figure the screenwriter must be into Chicago movies too, though!
