Music Video Musings - Animated Music Video Appreciation #2 Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood So, even before the Gorillaz came out, I was a fan of Jamie Hewlett, the art director of the band, and the strange words he loved to craft.

Tank Girl was on TV alot, and I heard it was based on a comic, and I forget how I got some issues of it, but I knew Hewlett could really breath life into character in some fun ways.

So I was excited to see Gorillaz come out with this video, and I spent plenty of time poking around the flash enabled Kong Studios, and enjoying the music.

I think this music video did several clever thing in establishing the band, and now I will mention them in no particular order;

featuring gorilla in the video helped ensure that when ever any one mentioned the video they could say "the one with the gorillas in it" which is effective marketing/name recognition proliferation.

I think the cartoony aspects where used in a way that let there be darker content, more slap stick, and some stylish things like 2d's shadowed profile.

It's a simple but effective intro to the nature of each character, which as the seminal work of this real fake band is good marketing.

The animation allowed the characters and the visual elements to really play along side the music.

the animate also allowed larger than life character like the ghost of Rustle's friend and the gorilla zombies to come into play, and for the team making it to use some fun shot composition.

It's nice to see the band still going strong after all these years. I hope they keep at it.

Music Video Musings: Get Busy Living, Goldfish

I really do enjoy the honest effort and vibes of the Goldfish with their great beats, jazzy saxophone, and their funky edm. Their music videos are also dear to my heart, in their over the top animation, and back grounds loaded with detail and rube-goldbergian mechanisms. I really like the very literal ideal of "learning to live with your baggage" frame work for an actual suitcase, and the joy and that the little buddy found on their journey. It makes me dwell on the idea or baggage make us who we are, and yet we are still worth celebrating and joy. But yeah, Mike Scott, the animator, did a great job on keeping the animation simple, but readable, and laying it under a lush and wonderful world. Also, I don't want to close without pointing out that Emily Bruce really knocks it out of the park with a voice ranging from a warm whisper, to clearly declared mantras, and to echoing affirmation. After two years of intermittent labor, here it finally is! Thank you so much to everyone who has been following the progress of this getting made and for supporting me as I took on a project that kind of exploded in scale past what I initially planned haha.

Firstly, thank you to everyone involved in making Beetlejuice the Musical! I love it so much and this thing only happened because the source material is just so good. Consider this a send-off for the musical since it'll be closing early next year. If you're able to, y'all should really grab some tickets and see the show live! They're also touring the show soon, so really there's no excuse!! Go watch this show. It's a joy and a labor of love.

Secondly, I feel it's necessary to provide a small disclaimer. This project started out as a storyboard and ended up landing somewhere in between boards and animation. For sake of those who don't know and maybe want to break into the animation industry, this level of polish, color, backgrounds, etc is ABSOLUTELY NOT what is expected or wanted from an actual professional storyboard. I put in the time and effort to give it this level of polish just for fun! And also because I know I'm not shipping it off to get animated. This is the final product and it's something I just wanted to do for the hell of it because I love boarding and I love this musical.

Now that that's out of the way, I just wanna give an extra thanks to Jeannette Arroyo and Amber Blade Jones for busting their asses to give this little project some of the most BEAUTIFUL backgrounds in the business. It elevated the level of this thing beyond anything I could've hoped for.
