Common firecrest - (surprise of the day)
flickr
Common firecrest - (surprise of the day) by Adam Swaine Via Flickr: The common firecrest, also known as the firecrest, is a very small passerine bird in the kinglet family. It breeds in most of temperate Europe and northwestern Africa, and is partially migratory, with birds from central Europe wintering to the south and west of their breeding range..

The common firecrest (Sommergoldhähnchen) along with its cousin the goldcrest (Wintergoldhähnchen) is the smallest bird in Germany. It measures about 9 cm, has a wingspan of 13-16 cm and weighs only 4-6 grams. They’re definitely hard to capture on photo, since they hop and fly through the brush as if they’d  drunk an entire energy drink. Photo: Foe Rodens

🇬🇧 The common firecrest (Regulus ignicapilla) is a little bird with a wingspan of 13–16 cm and a weight of 4–7 grams. I was lucky enough to meet these tiny creatures in their natural habitat a couple of years ago and it was a magical experience ✨

...
The little royalty, watercolour, 17x12 cm These little birds (goldcrest, Regulus regulus) always make me smile when I see them. Sometimes I see something fluttering around among the branches of a spruce tree, and that's enough to suspect it's them. Other times it's their song that tells me they're there. When I was little I was taught by my dad that they're the smallest bird in Sweden. Since then the even smaller common firecrest, Regulus ignicapilla, is also found nesting here, making the goldcrest the second smallest bird in Sweden.

What's in a Name — Miraculous Ladybug
4. THE CLASSMATES
4.1. Bruel, Ivan
Bruel: Old French for "woods, grove", as well as the Catalan name for a species of bird called a firecrest (Regulus ignicapilla).
Ivan: Slavic form of "John", from a Hebrew name meaning "God is gracious".
4.2. Haprèle, Mylène
Haprèle: probably a variant of the German surname Harpel, which ultimately comes from the name of a place in The Netherlands.
Mylène: contraction of "Marie-Hélène". Sounds similar to the Slavic name Milena, meaning "dear, sweet", which is probably why her name is changed to this in the Serbian dub.
4.3. Kanté, Max
Max: ultimately from Latin "maximus", meaning "greatest".
Kanté: probably in reference to either German philosopher Immanuel Kant, or Guinean writer and educator Solomana Kanté.
4.4. Kubdel, Alix
Kubdel: N/A. Seriously, I got nothing.
Alix: medieval French form of "Alice", ultimately from a Germanic name meaning "noble". Is a reference to Alice in Wonderland.
4.5. Kurtzberg, Nathanaël
Kurtzberg: "short mountain", in German. Is a reference to comic book artist Jack Kirby, whose real name was Jacob Kurtzberg.
Nathanaël: "God has given", in Hebrew. Was chosen in reference to Nathanaël Bronn, the show's art director, who the character bears a rather striking resemblance to.
4.6. Lavillant, Rose
Lavillant: probably an alternative spelling of Levaillant. In this case, it's ultimately derived from the Old French place name "Villencourt", the name of an abbey in Normandy. Together with Rose's first name, it forms a pun—"Lavillant Rose" sounds identical to "la vie en rose". "Voir la vie en rose" is a French idiom that roughly translates as "to wear rose-colored glasses".
Rose: "rose flower" or "pink", in both French and English.
4.7. Lê, Chiến Kim
Lê: "black", in Vietnamese. It's the fourth most common surname in Vietnam. Without the diacritic, it looks identical to the French definite article. The English dub changes it to "Nguyen", while the French dub itself later changes it to "Ature", for a pun on "immature".
Chiến: "war, fight", in Vietnamese, it also means "to face something head on". Without the diacritics, it looks identical to the French word for "dog".
Kim: "gold", in Vietnamese.
4.8. Rancomprix, Sabrina
Sabrina: from the name of the river Severn, which is ultimately of unknown meaning.
Raincomprix: from the phrase "rien compris", meaning "understood nothing" in French. Together with Sabrina's first name, it forms a pun—"Sabrina Raincomprix" sounds identical to "Sabri n'a rien compris", which means something like "Sabri didn't understand anything".
4.9. Rossi, Lila
Rossi: from "rosso", Italian for "red".
Lila: either from a Sanskrit term that can loosely be translated as "divine play", or from an Arabic word meaning "night". Either way, it means "purple" in various languages, like Dutch, Romanian, German, and Hungarian. Might also be a pun on "lie", but this only works in the English dub; in both Italian and French, the name is pronounced "Lee-la".

the diary excerpts, 18 nov 2023
(transcript under the cut)
Part 1
[On the lectern are tattered pages, ripped from what seems to be a diary.]
This day marks a year, a truly joyous year full of good ale and high spirits! The Firecrests have had wondrous success; sailing the high seas together as one has been a dream come true!
It's been heartwarming to see everyone come together. Finally, after years of dark times, there's been light. It feels like a family.
I have high hopes for the future of the Firecrests, and as we continue to build the Faction Isles, I can't wait to sail onwards with my crew.
Part 2
[On the lectern are tattered pages, ripped from what seems to be a diary.]
Entry 2: This isn't how things were meant to go… I understood from the offset that this task of mine came with a heavy yoke [misspelled as 'yolk']. "The ends justify the means", pah!
I was blinded by my own accomplishments. People finally had a space to thrive, to belong, and I felt that as long as they were happy, what did it matter how it… ended…
Others are becoming suspicious, disappearances [misspelled as 'dissapearances'] are becoming more common; I've tried to insist that we need to slow down, that I need more time… They won't listen.
I fear, with the growing discord in the ranks, that my time here may be coming to an end…
Part 3
[On the lectern are tattered pages, ripped from what seems to be a diary.]
Entry 3: [I] HAVE to leave, [I] have to go… I Can't, can't bear [misspelled as 'bare'] the…
They know. They all know. I can tell, I can hear…
She's coming; she's coming and they won't listen to me. I can't stay here any longer.
I'm sorry, I've failed you all, I wasn't trying to– I was just… May Iris have mercy on us all.

alright this is an utterly random question, but since you like birds and sharpe hopefully it'll amuse you (and if it doesn't, feel free to ignore it lol):
what bird would you say best represents any characters from the sharpe series?
I have now devoted probably more serious thought to this than it merits, and been repeatedly distracted by all the myriad Neat Birds in this world, but I had fun so here is an inexhaustive list of avian counterparts; some of which based on actual shared traits, some more on vibes, and some 'cus it's funny...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sharpe- Red kite; bird of prey, is commonly seen scavenging together with crows, thief, threatening reputation [alt. Iberian green woodpecker; found in spain, shy, green, tenacious, yells when nervous, ...look up the latin taxonomic]
Tumblr media
Theresa- Kestrel; keen-eyed hunter that ambushes prey with with dangerous precision, patient
Tumblr media
Harper- Hooded crow; sociable, clever, problem-solving (and causing) bird
Tumblr media
Harris- Myna; intelligent, voluble and opinionated, cheeky, picks up languages (can imitate human speech)
Tumblr media
Hagman- Brown thrasher; at home in wood and field, usually an elusive bird, keen eye for insect prey, large song repertoire and ability to mimic other songs
Tumblr media
Perkins- Titipounamu/Rifleman; teeniest, tiniest, only slightly larger than a ping-pong ball rifleman (alternately so-called 'cus they're green and have a rapid-fire pip-pip-pip-pip call)
Tumblr media
Harry Price- Bohemian waxwing; bit of a wastrel, pretty, crest of feathers like a flop of hair, waxwings have been known to get drunk on fermented fruit
Tumblr media
Hogan- Common firecrest; adaptable, constructs elaborately engineered nests, held in folklore to be a canny, crafty bird

Ten of my favourite photos taken in January 2024 and end of month thoughts
The photos are of; Waxwings at Farnham, Tufted Duck at Radipole Lake, Robin at Fishlake Meadows, Glossy Ibis at Titchfield, Fox at Southsea, turkey tail and other fungi at Fishlake Meadows, daisy at Lakeside Country Park, Long-bodied Cellar spider at home, icy view at Lakeside and a sunny view at Acres Down in the New Forest.
January was a thrilling and extraordinary start to my year. Birds dominated my month as I made a start on my new bird year list, in more unique circumstances for me this year I am extremely proud to have seen over 100 species inside the first month of the year again with my year list in a great place competing well with where some of my best ever were on this date in a year. It was one of the most characteristic first months of my birding year with many spectacular things happening from a Black Redstart repeatedly turning up in and around the garden (a species I also saw at Southsea Castle on my birthday at the start of the month) which was a dream come true to me being so glad I'm able to say I'm part of the Waxwing winter having the amazing experience of seeing them in my week off to start the year. Goldeneyes, Scaup, Ferruginous Duck, Long-tailed Duck, Great Northern Diver, Water Rails, Glossy Ibis, Spoonbill, Great White Egret, Cattle Egret, Avocet, Spotted Redshank, Snipe, Slavonian Grebe, Black-necked Grebe, Little Grebe, Common Gull, stunning moments watching Kingfishers including once again on my birthday at Lakeside, Cetti's Warbler, Stock Dove, Barn Owl, Marsh Harrier, Sparrowhawks, Red Kite, Redwing, Fieldfare, Crossbill, Hawfinch, Siskin, Bullfinch, Chiffchaff, Treecreeper, Goldcrests and Firecrests were other highlights. As well as some of the above species Ring-necked Parakeet, Grey Wagtail, Great Spotted and Green Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Cormorant, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Crested Grebe, Greylag Goose, Goosander, Gadwall and my first ever Pochards on the site were key birds on the many walks at my patch Lakeside Country Park throughout the month with Peregrine a key bird seen in Winchester on office working days. I had a phenomenal Big Garden Birdwatch at the end of the month one of my best ever with the Black Redstart, my first garden Goldcrest ever, Goldfinches, Blue Tit, Blackbird and more counted in this fun activity again. I felt it was such a memorable month for photographing birds too with the many amazing opportunities I've had.
It was a sensational month of mammals too with so many seen including the Fox, my first ever Water Shrew on a flooded path at Radipole Lake, Grey Seal at Lymington, fields full of Sika Deers on the way to Weymouth for Radipole in Dorset and nice moments with Grey Squirrels. A quiet insect month of course but sweet sightings of Red Admiral butterflies in Winchester and at Acres Down and Grey Silverfishes at home was nice. I did enjoy spiders a lot this month again at home especially Long-bodied Cellar spiders. It was a really interesting floral month with early blooms notable for species such as winter heliotrope, violet, snowdrops adorning the landscape in Winchester and crocus, things like wild carrot and hogweed still going for part of the month and daffodil shoots and a flower I saw arriving with rose hips and some other fruit still around. There was still a bit of fungi to be seen which was nice.
In terms of landscape and sky photography and just taking in scenes it was a memorable month with a mix of dramatic wet weather, strong clear sunny winter days creating vibrant scenes and the stunning grip of winter as the ice and frost came in colder parts of the month. From woods to much reedbed as well as the coast I took in a lot of nice habitats this month. I enjoyed the moon, rainbows and sunsets and particularly sunrises this month a lot too. Wishing you all a good February.
