Congrats, ELLIE, you have been accepted to AL for the role of SEVERUS SNAPE (FC: aneurin barnard). HOLY CRAPOLY, ELLIE! This app was absolutely fantastic! I couldn’t pull myself away from reading it and was just seriously BLOWN AWAY. This is everything I ever could have dreamed for in a portrayal for a character as central to the plot as Severus is! IC Overview

name — severus tobias snape. faceclaim — aneurin barnard, louis garrel, richard harmon. age — 26. gender — cis male.

sexuality — demisexual, biromantic. He lacks the terminology for it, and simply regards sex as yet another social endeavor for which he is ill-equipped.

patronus — doe. yes, it still works. no, he doesn’t understand why or how. he is most certainly not pure of heart. the memory he calls on to summon the patronus is his first dinner with the evans family, where mrs. evans piled his plate high with steak and mashed potatoes and peas, and lily snuck her broccoli onto his plate discreetly while trying not to make a face, and petunia was spending the night at a friend’s house across the street and too far away to ruin the lighthearted atmosphere. they joked and laughed and cleaned the dishes afterwards. it was the first proper family dinner he’s had in his life.

boggart — voldemort. Not, specifically, for the man himself although he is a rather striking figure on his own – but rather for what the man represents to snape. Voldemort represents how far snape’s ambition and thirst for power and knowledge will take him if left unchecked. He represents a hungry and gaping and greedy part of snape that will take and take and take, and grow hungrier and greedier still, uncaring. Losing control in such a manner – allowing himself to be led astray by a mad man and his mad men, doing their bidding and spreading pain and grief and loss, thinking himself so righteous and vindicated – the worst parts of himself, unvarnished, laid bare for him to see. Snape has long since discarded any illusions of himself he may have entertained before the war. He knows the parts that make him up. He knows what he does and why he does it. He knows how far he will go without an anchor — and he fears being unmoored and unrestrained most of all. Fears what he will allow himself to do, without a pragmatic set of rules and ethics to keep him in line.

IC In Depth

personality traits —

+Loyal: snape’s loyalty is difficult to earn, but impossible to lose. He has a thorough, comprehensive, all-or-nothing approach towards loyalty. You either have it or you don’t. All of him or none of him. He will give you his soul – his strength, his work, his honour, his dignity, his life, his word – or he will give you nothing. Thus far, the only people who have earned his loyalty are lily evans and albus dumbledore.

+Sharp: snape is clever and perceptive, his intelligence owed in large due to the many hours spent in his mother’s company as a child, listening to her stories and her theories and her careful instruction. She was not a pleasant woman, nor a kind mother, but she taught him the power of knowledge at a young age, and the sharp glint of intelligence in his eyes matched hers.

+Hardworking: say what you will about snape’s character flaws – of which he has plenty, and of which there is quite a lot to say – but his work ethic has always been and will always be impeccable, beyond reproach. He never does things by half. He is a hard worker who spares no efforts once he sets his mind to a task.

-Antagonistic: he holds firm to an unpleasant disposition and hostile countenance. It is his nature to be wary and suspicious and to hold others in low esteem until proven wrong. Snape takes most attempts at social interaction with a grain of salt, expecting mockery and insolence and responding swiftly in kind.

-Bitter: snape’s biggest motivator is spite. He’s a man of well-groomed grudges, what can he say? growing up in poverty with a bitter mother and an unpleasant father, both of whom were uncreative in how they let out their frustrations and rather liberal in tossing about blame for everything that had gone wrong in their lives, had left him with quite an armful of ill-advised coping methods and a less than stellar personality overall.

-Selfish: it’s not that he’s incapable of love and affection. He is demonstrably and regrettably capable of both. He has, as well, displayed a certain capacity for selfless action when it came to his precious few loved ones. Sometimes. But, well. Well. It’s not his default. He spent many years with his head firmly stuck up his ass, seeing and caring about nothing but his own interests and his own ambitions and dreams finally being realized — and nearly lost the only thing in his rather pathetic life that held any meaning whatsoever. And he is still selfish by nature. Even in the years since he’d come to dumbledore to yet again pledge his allegiance to yet another all powerful and all conniving old wizard – the irony of which was not lost on him, not for a moment, rest assured – selflessness is still an installed feature that he must think consciously of before implementing. And, most of the time, it is not something he chooses to do.

-Deceptive: if snape was the sort to keep count of such things – and, as a spy, he most assuredly is – he would truthfully disclose that, in every relationship he’s built in his life since he was old enough for hogwarts, there is a layer of deception that must be adhered to at all times. An intermingling web of lies and half truths and omissions that must be observed with careful attention, lest the whole thing unravel and spill out his doom. He’s a spy. At least now it’s become part and parcel of who he is. At least, he now has a quasi-noble purpose to attach to the rather sticky threads of which he is – secretly – fond. He can admit, if only to himself, that he doesn’t know how to build a relationship without some form of deception to maintain throughout.

character biography —

PROLOGUE.

he stands on his tiptoes over the wooden chair, stirring with the ladle in both hands. clockwise, clockwise, counter-clockwise…. let the ladle rest against the side of the cauldron for thirty seconds. the liquid is two shades off. he adds a pinch of powder, and the color adjusts.

mam’s sharp eyes follow his every move. she nods, stiffly. tension uncoils from his shoulders. “when you get to hogwarts,” she says, brusque, “you’ll be at the top of your class.”

it’s not explicit praise, told more like a command, really, but it’s close enough. emboldened, he asks, “will i ‘ave friends at ‘ogwarts?” he looks up. watches. “lots and lots o’ friends?”

mam blinks. the silence stretches. she pats his head, drops her hand down to his shoulder. “of course, sev. lots and lots. now help me pack everything away before your dad comes home.”

ACT I.

can a place be both hell and home?

well, if it can be — if it’s possible to love and hate a place with equal intensity, if it’s possible to feel like a jigsaw puzzle slotting into place at last and still look over your shoulder and jump at every sound — if it is, then to severus, hogwarts was that place. the home that was unsafe, the home with danger at every corner, the home with no way out. no way out but through.

it’s not s’pposed to be like this, he’d thought, eleven and still a touch naive. this can’t be right. but what did he know about homes and safety, anyway? was Spinner’s End not the same, except smaller and with less magic? did he not look over his shoulder and watch his every step just the same?

being a halfblood matters, more than he thought it would. and being a slytherin matters, but not in the way he’d thought. a poor, dirty, halfblood slytherin with a nasty attitude and an uncouth accent stood out like a rotten stink. hogwarts was magical and whimsical, but it was just a place, just like any other, and the students were just students, and the bullies were just bullies. and sev was still sev, wand or no wand. hogwarts did not fix him and make him better. it did not give him friends on a silver platter.

what it gave him, instead, was knowledge. yes, he spent years the target of relentless bullying, made more enemies than friends and few acquaintances who were in between, but the library was his home. He devoured knowledge with a single-minded intensity, filled with such joy at learning new concepts and spells that it made everything else he had to put up with worth the effort. He badgered his teachers relentlessly with increasingly complex questions, and often times concerning lines of inquiry, and experimented with new spells and potions early on — first with lily, then without — filling notebooks with ideas and information and half formed thoughts. At the age of thirteen, he’d begun working on his own grimoire, writing down his own potions recipes and his modifications to existing potions. All the great potions masters have their own grimoires, why shouldn’t he start his own now?

He isn’t sure when his views began to shift. Somewhere along the way, the facade he’d put on for his housemates began to seep through the cracks and into the boy underneath. it became so much easier to hate muggles and then muggleborns, to blame them for everything that went wrong in his life, to use this hatred as an outlet for all his frustrations he already had with his own life.

By the time the dark lord called, severus was well and truly indoctrinated. It didn’t take much to convince himself that this was the right thing to do.

ACT II.

He takes the mark.

Things… escalate.

They ask him to do terrible things, and he does them fastidiously. He does not feel satisfaction or pleasure when killing and torturing, though he hardly lets that stop him from doing exactly as he’s instructed, to the letter, and sometimes beyond. Vying for the attention and approval of the man who held his soul in the palm of his hand, indifferent to it’s fate, careless in his handling unless the little halfblood proved himself useful. And he did. He proved himself clever, gifted, loyal, ruthless. He worked hard to earn his place, knowing the alternative.

It’s not like he doesn’t know he’s in a genocidal cult. At some point, even the most indoctrinated could see what this was. The dark lord wanted servants to do his bidding, not allies to share in the glory and the power. The dark lord was strikingly clever, imposing and powerful, and stark raving mad.

But severus was marked. He couldn’t put himself at risk, couldn’t think of stepping out of line with his master’s mark upon his arm. The only way out was through.

severus was thorough. he followed instructions to completion, with a single minded focus. he did his work with a professional detachment, a nonbeliever in the guise of a devotee.

And then, he came upon a prophecy.

ACT III.

The dark lord’s fall is a gift that severus doesn’t know what to do with. He’d spent so long treading a worn thread like a tightrope over the brink of hell itself, that the thought of letting his guard down for even a moment sends his every sense screaming DANGER! DANGER! DANGER!

He feels like a man who’s been running full pelt, nonstop, like he was running his whole life and suddenly the ground is pulled from beneath him and he’s free-falling into nothingness. Lily is safe. Unhappy, but alive, and for that he is more grateful than he could’ve ever imagined.

But he is alive, too. And for all his plots and schemes, it didn’t occur to him that he’d make it to the other end of this war in one piece. Not since he turned spy.

The question mark hangs over his head all the way through the chaos following the dark lord’s fall. Severus, sitting through trial after trial, feels as though his ears are stuffed full of cotton and his senses are veiled through with fog. Only in the aftermath of his own trial, when dumbledore rests a hand upon his shoulder and grants him a proud smile does severus begin to hope.

Dumbledore saves him. He gives him a home, a job, a purpose. He guides him through the darkest hour of his life.

Even through the fog, Severus can see it: the headmaster’s true intentions. He knows he must be of some use to the headmaster still, that dumbledore is simply working to gain his true loyalty. That all severus had really done on that stormy night was trade one master for another.

But dumbledore, for all his machinations, is still a good man. There are worse masters to grovel to, as he very well knows. And lily is safe, just as promised. It’s only right that severus pay back his due.

ACT IV.

Once he finds his footing, severus gets busy. He integrates himself with the remaining loyal death eaters as seamlessly as possible, works to maintain at least civil relationships with high ranking order members — with a few notable exceptions — and begins to, brick by brick, build his life from the ground up.

The following years are filled with quiet self reflection. Severus grows more critical of himself, of his actions, of his beliefs. He pulls apart his motives and his reasons for joining the dark lord, inspects his role in the war unsympathetically, the impact he’s had on the lives of others. He does not like what he sees. but he does not look away.

He’s created violent and dark spells for the dark lord during his service. Spells with no counter, or a secret one. Spells the death eaters all knew and used. If he had died in the war as he’d come to expect to, these spells would’ve been his only legacy. His only contribution to the wizarding world. unparalleled violence.

This is who he is. This is what he’s done. He cannot undo it, he cannot be forgiven. but he can strive to be… better. And he does.

beyond the waiting and watching and listening, severus shifts the bulk of his focus upon his work. He creates and tests potions with the needs of the wizarding community in mind, puts his brilliance to good use. He follows a strict code of ethics, to the letter, holds himself to task when it is not properly adhered to. He takes responsibility for the things he releases into the world. He builds himself a respectable reputation in his fields of study, his articles and discoveries published in peer-reviewed journals and papers, his work talked about in academic circles with something like respect.

As the whispers spread and the death eaters prepare for their next move, severus shifts to a ready stance. He has more to fight for — more to live for, now — than he had five years ago. He is ready.

plot ideas —

oh, god, i’m SO excited to explore what snape post-war would’ve been like if he didn’t lose lily. what happened in the books is that lily’s death and his role in it sent him down a spiral of self loathing, guilt, and suicide ideation – and he wallowed in his grief and his guilt for the rest of his life. the trajectory of his life after lily’s death shifted to protecting her son and serving dumbledore. he stopped thinking of his own ends and started viewing himself as a means to an end, that end being the physical safety of lily’s boy (disregarding, of course, the mental wellbeing of potter’s spawn) and while there was growth in his own views over the years i can’t help but think it was greatly stunted by his own grief.

what i want to explore with snape is growth. realistic, nonlinear, steady growth over the years after the war, where he becomes more critical of both himself, his motives, his thinking, and the impact of his actions on other people and the world. he grew up a precocious child with no proper adult guidance, and all his life lessons he’s learned through first hand experience. and like any other 17-year-old, he thought he knew everything. He was reckless and arrogant, and he made terrible choices confidently, with no regard to the greater consequences. post-war snape is painfully aware of his own shortcomings, is trying to be better, not for the sake of being a good person but for the sake of proper self discipline and self control. he never wants to lose control of himself and allow his ambitions and his greed to take him to such lengths again. he wants to have a more positive impact on the world around him, even if he himself is still an objectively bad person, even if he himself is still selfish and deceptive and eaten up by greed.

so how can a bad person be good? by doing good things, even if he’s doing it for the wrong reasons. and snape is doing it for the wrong reasons, he’s well aware of that. He doesn’t have the intuitive grasp of right and wrong that lily always had. He can’t simply do what feels right, as that never turned out to be the right thing at all. Instead, he does what he calculates as having the most positive impact on the biggest number of people, regardless of whether or not it feels right to him. He acts in the interests of the greater good.

It’s a very utilitarian approach. Not dissimilar to dumbledore, who took snape in after the war and was more or less his mentor figure the years following. but unlike dumbledore, snape does not disregard or dismiss the individual lives of people he comes across, is very mindful of his own personal impact in the individual lives of the people around him. in canon, snape is horrified at dumbledore’s plan for harry. dumbledore asks him how many men and women he’s watched die, and snape’s response to that is ‘lately, only those whom i could not save.’ this interaction perfectly encapsulates the differences in morality between the two men. snape is capable of making sacrifices for the greater good and strives to work towards ending the war, making moral compromises towards that end. but his faith in the greater good is limited. When it comes down to it, snape is loyal to people, not causes. And often, since he’s made the conscious decision to become a better person, risks his life for the sake of others.

Another thing i want to explore with snape is his interpersonal relationships. Because, god. Come onnnnnnnnn. His two best friends are lily evans and lucius malfoy. For fucks sake. Lily who cut ties with him when they were 16 and whose husband he is partially responsible for sending to an indefinite coma, yikes, and lucius, for whom he feels the most straightforward affection and who he’s actually quite prepared to stab in the back when the time comes. And it will come, soon enough.

He has….. Complicated relationships. And complicated views on intimacy. He has a tendency to separate his feelings from his duty, which sometimes leads to him doing terrible things to people he cares about. Lying, stealing, manipulating, etc etc etc. it does not mean, to him, that he cares about these people any less. Regrettably, he cares too much, and can’t stop caring once he starts. It does not mean the people he cares about are safe with him. And i want to explore that, especially in his relationships with lily and lucius, as well as his fellow death eaters.

Speaking of the death eaters. Snape was already a high ranking death eater before the dark lord fell, and he’d worked very hard the last five years to integrate himself irrevocably within the ranks of the remaining death eaters. He’d observed their dynamics and worked to make himself seem as loyal and irreplaceable as can be. No doubt he formed many a bond with many a member, not all of them built on lies. And he would take special interest in the hesitant, wavering loyalties, poking and prodding to see how he can use them to further his own position within the death eaters ranks. There’s a lot of potential for inner-politics and sabotage within the DE.

headcanons:

Snape had a thick manchester accent growing up that was very quickly packed away and replaced with ‘respectable speech’ a few weeks into his stay in the snake pit. When he’s angry or emotional he speaks very slowly and deliberately, his voice dropping in octaves and growing very soft and precise. it becomes very difficult for him to keep control of his speech. He slips on occasion when he and lily are alone.

Eileen sold wonderful ailment-soothing ‘tea’ for her neighbours. severus helped her brew these concoctions regularly as a kid, when he was still too short to reach the tabletop without standing on a chair.

Snape looks up to dumbledore and seeks his approval. It infuriates him to no end, that so much of his own decision-making hinges on the older man’s opinion of him, that he cares what albus thinks of him at all. But after the dark lord’s fall, snape was lost and fumbling, trying to make sense of the world, of himself, of his next steps. He desperately wanted to be a better man, but had neither the tools nor the guidance to do so. if albus hadn’t taken him under his wing, he doesn’t know where he’d be now.

he’s a heavy smoker. he picked up smoking post-war and is not in any hurry to quit. he can stop whenever he wants to anyway.

he maintains a private library in his rooms at hogwarts. he’s as possessive of it and as territorial as a dog. he’s accumulated a very impressive collection of rare books and journals over the years, and a long list of contacts in the private book collectors and book sellers circles to go with. a disproportionate number of his books are highly illegal and officially labelled ‘dark’.

the bulk of his focus, after the war, is split between two things. integrating himself further into the remaining circle of death eaters, and his own personal research into the mind arts, potions, and dark magic, which he conducts in his capacity as potions master and professor at hogwarts. he’s made several discoveries in potions study and published multiple articles in academic journals over the last five years, building himself a respectable reputation and body of works within his field. beyond the fact that such academic pursuits are his passion, his work gives him tangible proof that he is capable of positive contributions to the world around him. that he is capable of doing good, even if he himself is a bad person. his work and his growing reputation gives him something to look forward to after the war. it’s something unrelated to the death eaters and to lily, it’s something completely his own. he is very defensive and protective of his research.

Once or twice a month, snape visits muggle london and spends a few hours in a public library. It’s calming, reading books to simply pass the time. He won’t admit this to anyone, but the connection he has to the muggle world is something he’s learned to accept and even take comfort in from time to time.

Fl4k Fl4k Fl4k Fl4k Fl-

i didn’t die i just fell in love with that skill tree creator and have done nothing for the past few days but make skill trees and sleep for 3 hour intervals. im very excited for the gameplay on Wednesday but oh man oh me oh my i gotta catch up on a lot of posts lol

tl;dr: Fl4k is a badass. Stop misgendering them or I’ll show up at your home at 3am local time every time and then eat your spine. Bonus: Mr. Chew being an ‘Eridian skag’ is probably due to some funky mutation from eridium/slag/eridian stuff. Kinda like how Threshers have the ability to make singularities because they are native to Elpis, which is a big ol’ Eridian base (which i totally addressed in this post lol). I also gave my opinion on Fl4k’s skills in general, if you’re interested in that. Overall, a very awesome trailer! Definitely lived up to the hype.

i said it before, this trailer was one of the best ones. definitely #2 for me, Zane is still at #1 because i actually laughed during it. the music in this one is definitely the best out of all 4 tho. seems like they’re all variations of the same song, i like this one best. I need this soundtrack sooo bad.

also i know probably no one else following this blog watches one piece but like

that first footstep with the studded boot and the sound effect immediately flung me back to katakuri. god katakuri was a badass. i was so excited to see that fight animated.

mr chew spinning around is my favorite thing ever. i love that you can tell the personality of the pets just from watching the intro.

i know fl4k is like a real badass in this trailer, but i get the feeling they’re going to end up being at least a little soft for their pets. i mean... they have stuffed animals of them ffs.

so... we’re near Sanctuary-III in this trailer? I gotta keep my eye out then. i also want to see if that one claptrap area guess i had is correct or not... this looks like an entryway for the garage so im guessing i wasn’t, but let’s seeeee

i could have sworn fl4k’s jabber was cryo/shock. it was blue, wasn’t it? i wonder if they changed it or if it’s skill upgrades change its color. i thought the upgrades just gave it better guns.

yeah it was! i guess possibly upgrading it with the guns gives it a new color scheme? maybe? this could be the gunslinger upgrade!

it looks like their jabber went through the most design changes out of all of the pets. that or this is yet another upgrade (since each pet has 3 states). maybe this is the beefcake version.

i mean... there IS a shitload of cars everywhere. i wouldn’t surprised if it’s near her garage cause it looks like a scrapyard.

but also where in the fuck are all these ‘normal’ looking cars coming from?? it’s not like we see them being used on pandora. all the ones we see in bl1/2 are clearly dilapidated and rusting. big thonk. at least the vans/busses kinda make sense.

(also, notice how fl4k uses ‘he’ for mr chew. it’s almost as if they understand the concept of gender, chose their own pronouns, and your argument that they only are nonbinary only because they “don’t understand yet” is invalid! Fl4k is canonically nonbinary and uses they/them/theirs pronouns as confirmed by both SungWon Cho and their in-game skills.

Now that you know, use they/them/theirs for Fl4k or get off my blog. Because by not doing so, you are disrespecting the devs’ wishes for this character AND the nonbinary people who find representation in them and I won’t support that. if you feel like arguing your reasons to purposefully misgender them even after knowing this, please DM me so I can block you. thanks!

For those of you out there actually making an effort: mistakes happen, especially if Fl4k is the first NB person you’ve learned about. Just make sure to correct yourself then move on, and we’re okay. Everyone has to learn sometime and it’s better to put in the effort than not care at all. It will become second nature.)

Fl4k is such a badass, they really are way different than i expected (personality-wise), but i am not complaining. gearbox knows me better than i know myself, so i know i’m going to end up loving Fl4k anyway. ProZD did such a fantastic job, i honestly did not recognize him at first! i can tell with certain words now, but wow i am blown away.

i hope we’re able to climb that bird’s nest lookin’ thing in the back. it would be perfect for sniping and/or placing ur clone for maximum coverage.

seriously, what a badass.

idk i feel obligated to give my opinions of Fl4k over here since they were recently released. I am digging them 100%, tho i was kinda surprised (not in a bad way) they’re not as... i guess soft as i was expecting from their character design with the plushes and the face on the backpack and the smiley face pin, but i imagine that’s different when they’re interacting with their pets. im super curious to see how this VH group’s dynamic is going to go.

mechanically, their skills seem perfect for people who loved sniper Zer0 and in general Mordecai, with a splash of Salvador tossed in for good luck. I am a dirty melee Zer0 main and i prefered Phasewalking over Bloodwing (altho i still play mordy bc he’s best bl1 VH) so, while I am definitely going to give Fl4k a go, they’re not my main bl3 Vault Hunter, that’s reserved for Zane and his lovely ability to befuddle enemies and run around. Funnily enough, I’m not even a fan of pet classes, so Fl4k being second in my play order is pretty funny. Tho, yeah, Amara being last is also pretty weird. I guess I don’t necessarily enjoy melee, I just enjoy messing with the bad guys lol

ohh, also, I am most interested in the upgrade for mr. chew that gives him the ability to create singularities and is called ‘Eridian Skag’.

so I’m not saying my theory that the threshers on the moon were connected to Eridians was right, I’m just saying they’re the only form of wildlife we know that has a singularity ability (outside of Mr. Chew, apparently).

im just saying gearbox, you should hire me to write your deep lore for you cause i’d do it for free

im wondering if we’ll be seeing skags with wormhole abilities in bl3. maybe the constant exposure to slag is starting to mutate them further beyond just elemental bonuses (on badass skags). We know Maya’s phaselock has a singularity ability (so does Amara’s phasegrasp), and that is sorta ‘occurring naturally’ (you know, as natural as siren powers can get) unlike the singularity grenades we encounter which use our known technology. plus, uh, whatever happened to the destroyer’s eye in TPS that made it create a singularity/wormhole by injecting it with a fuckload of slag. that probably has something to do with this as well.

but geez i really hope mr. chew is okay with being all slag/eridium-ed up. i guess being badass elemental skags doesn’t appear to hurt them, just make them more powerful, unlike humans. maybe that has something to do with sentience, if slag/eridium/eridian stuff actually is driving bandits crazy. could explain why/if the jabber doesn’t get an element like the skag (eridian skag) and spiderant (fire) do, since they’re described as semi-sentient...

anyway.

Fl4k is cool. Definitely a neat trailer- my second favorite for sure- and the skill tree drop blew me away because i was not expecting it. im expecting a lot of Fl4k mains in the first few weeks of gameplay because they look like a lot of fun!

EDIT: i was wrong, in the newest IGN vid, it turns out we ARE near the recruitment center, because that IS the recruitment center

Top 20 Favourite Alt-J Songs

The title is pretty self explanatory so I’m just gonna jump right in

(Also I’ll be briefly explaining what I like about each one, so another long post. Feel free to skip through if you just want to know the songs)

20. Left Hand Free

Generally a really nice bop. It is arguably their most poppy song, and quite different from most of their other music, but it’s still recognisably them, which is what I love. Honestly all I have to hear is the guitar intro and I’m already dancing like an idiot

ALSO there’s a really cute interview/live performance that the band did on KEXP (I’ll insert the link at the end if I can be bothered) where they’re playing this song and in the bit where it goes back to “ain’t shady baby I’m hot”, Gus starts clapping to the beat and makes Joe laugh so much that he can’t even sing it properly and it’s v cute

(Also the little “speakeasy” about halfway through is sexy ngl)

19. Interlude 3 ❦

Strange choice I know, but hear me out. I love the simplicity of this interlude, because it’s literally just 58 seconds of piano and quiet vocalising over the top, but it WORKS SO WELL. Plus it’s placed between a heavier song and a more gentle song on the album, so it’s an interesting way of transitioning.

18. Taro

I have such good memories of the first time I heard Taro. I associate it with getting up early in the morning and going for a walk, as cheesy as that sounds - it just generally fills me with so much happiness. I think it’s very well composed, and that INSTRUMENTAL!! I love it!!!

Not to mention the lyrics about the two war photographers (Robert Capa and Gerda Taro) are very interesting. In general I just really love the different topics that Alt-J write about in their songs.

17. Arrival In Nara

This is such a beautiful, peaceful and gentle song. The piano in the first half sets the song up so nicely, and it’s complemented well with the really light vocals. Especially when Joe and Gus harmonise for the “though I cannot see I can hear her smile as she sings”....I’m dead

16. Intro (This Is All Yours version)

Even though this song does take some time to build up, I’d definitely say it’s worth the wait. The layers are built up so gradually and effectively, and by the time the drums come in, it’s just....it’s just amazing. Wow.

15. Ms

I actually used to skip this song when I first listened to An Awesome Wave, not because I didn’t like it, just because it didn’t really stand out to me that much. WELL.

You know that meme that’s been recreated a million times that says “when you listen to that one song on the album you always skip and it’s actually fire”? Yeah, that’s Ms. The lyrics are beautiful, the a cappella on “the dark seeks dark” works so nicely, and the instrumental after “the nights of all my youth pressed into one glass of water/the shadow burns across like embers tide paper” is so incredibly relaxing.

14. 3WW

I remember one day early in 2017, I said to myself, “it’d be really nice to see Alt-J live, but they haven’t made any music in like, three years. Oh well.”

THE. LITERAL. NEXT. DAY. My friend texted me saying that they’d released a teaser for a new song. So after running round my house hyperventilating and whisper-screaming (don’t worry, I was home alone), I went onto YouTube and listened to the 30-second teaser of 3WW.

AND MY MIND WAS BLOWN. Even more so when I listened to the full song. Gus’ vocals in the beginning are AMAZING - so glad he finally got a solo. Ellie Rowsell’s vocals halfway through are so perfectly placed, and she was definitely the right woman for the job. The instrumentation is absolutely beautiful. Overall the song is just a masterpiece.

13. Hunger Of The Pine

The first song I ever heard from This Is All Yours. I love the way it begins, with Joe singing without any accompaniment apart from that repeating note. It’s another song that builds up nicely, especially by the time the drums come in, and that Miley Cyrus sample?! I had no idea it was her, it just blends in so well.

This is definitely the sort of song you should listen to with headphones on, preferably also with your eyes closed. It’s such an experience and it really takes me places.

(Also shoutout to Gus and his awesome French skills towards the end)

12. The Gospel Of John Hurt

This song is quite similar to HOTP, in the way that it focuses on layers and starts in a very simplistic way before building up. I really like the drums in the second verse and chorus, and the tempo change right after that. I also thought it was cool that the first time Joe sings “Jeremiah” it’s kind of gentle and airy, but then the second time it’s more like “JeremiAHHHHHH” idk it’s cool

And every chorus after the tempo change just makes me feel like my soul has been awoken because W O W

11. Dissolve Me

The first few months of 2017 were a bit difficult for me, and An Awesome Wave as a whole really helped me through them. However, Dissolve Me stood out because of the line “she makes the sound, the sound the sea makes, to calm me down”. My difficulties were to do with my anxiety, and listening to this song helped me to relax like you wouldn’t believe. So it holds a special place in my heart for that reason.

My favourite part has to be the ending when Joe and Gus are harmonising with the “ohhh” and then the chords from the intro come back, and they take it in turns to sing “she makes the sound the sea makes, knee deep in the north”. Absolutely spectacular, even more so live.

10. Something Good

This song definitely lives up to its title. As far is I’m concerned, if you tell me that you can listen to the drums in the intro and not want to dance, you’re a liar. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.

The vocals in the verses are honestly so groovy, and the choruses are somewhat gentle, but they still make me want to get up and dance. The drums throughout the whole song also give it a really nice vibe.

9. Interlude 1/The Ripe & Ruin ❦

I have a surprisingly strong connection with this song, and I’ll explain why. The lyrics are generally about finding balance in your life, but they more specifically describe a woman who constantly counts her steps while walking and makes sure to “abide by the law that she herself has set”. One of my idiosyncrasies has always been pretty much exactly this, and I’ve always thought I was weird for doing it, so this interlude makes me feel lot less alone. Plus the lack of music makes it feel much more intimate.

8. In Cold Blood

AN ACTUAL BANGER. That’s pretty much all I need to say.

The way it instantly begins. The fact that the numbers in the beginning are backwards binary code for ∆, meaning it’s the world’s most cryptic name drop. The line “all above crowd around so fucking loud”. The brass in the chorus. The way the music at the end of the chorus just instantly stops, Joe sings “in cold blood”, and then the music comes right back. I LOVE IT ALL.

7. Tessellate

Tessellate was the song that led me to discover Alt-J, thanks to my extreme obsession with the Ellie Goulding cover that spent a long time being my favourite song ever. I will admit that my younger, unappreciative self wasn’t huge fan of the original song initially, partially because I saw some of the dodgy looking people in the music video lip syncing to the song and naturally thought they were the band. But over time, I decided to give Alt-J another go, and it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. And I obviously LOVE Tessellate now.

6. Adeline

I’m pretty sad I didn’t get to see this song live, but listening to it at home with headphones is a magical enough experience. It has such powerful lyrics, the way everything gradually builds up is just so beautiful (yes I say that a lot, but they do it a lot okay), it’s just incredible. Especially that end bit where Gus is singing “ohhhhh my Adeline” and you hear the “YAAA YAAA YAAA” over the top. MIND=BLOWN.

5. Matilda

I can honestly say that it was love at first listen with Matilda. Given that I’d been introduced to Alt-J with Breezeblocks and Tessellate, it was nice to listen to something that was a little more light and gentle (in my opinion). I love the way the song references the film Léon, and the drum beat right at the start of the first verse is so peaceful and nice to listen to.

4. Fitzpleasure

When I first got into Alt-J and I’d only heard An Awesome Wave, Fitzpleasure was actually my number 1 favourite song of theirs. I obviously still love it, given that it’s now number 4. The bass line (and guitar in general) is so COOL!! It’s such a groovy sounding song and I love the way it switches between Joe singing a cappella and heavy bass. 10/10.

(P.S. yes I know what the song is about, and no, we are not discussing that today.)

3. Pleader

My favourite Relaxer song, the music video for which has made me cry on multiple occasions. The introductory violins, the way everything is layered, the vocals, the lyrics, basically this song just makes me feel every single emotion at once and it gives me goosebumps and it’s AMAZING. What a killer song to end an album with.

2. Bloodflood

This may come as a surprise, but I actually took ages to listen to this song. I didn’t actually listen to An Awesome Wave from start to finish, I kinda just put it on my laptop and listened to each song gradually, which I now realise was not the best idea. But HOLY MOLY. BLOODFLOOD.

I don’t think I need to say much about this song, because every Alt-J fan knows why it’s amazing. However, it is only number 2, because in terms of personal connections and meaning, there is only one song that can top it.

And that song is......

1. Nara

WOW. Where to even start. The first time I listened to This Is All Yours (actually from start to finish this time), Nara just stuck out to me for some reason. I have always been a huge supporter of the LGBT+ community, and hearing a song about a gay relationship is just really nice for me. It’s incredibly powerful due to its description of how difficult it is to be gay in a situation where that isn’t truly accepted.

As well as that, the repetition of “hallelujah, Bovay, Alabama” at the end always hits me right in the feels. It’s such a simple motif, yet it works so well as an outro, especially if you understand why they chose those specific words.

So there you go, my top 20 favourite Alt-J songs. Congratulations if you made it this far.

Summary: While attending a comic convention, y/n literally knocks into a person who's cosplaying a matching character to hers. Although, appearances can be deceiving. She enters an interesting conversation that may be the start of a new chapter in her life.

"Smile!!" says a girl cosplaying as Mad Moxxi from Borderlands. The flash goes off and she thanks me, leaving to rejoin her friends.

God, I love going to comic conventions but this costume is getting warm with all the bodies pressing into the building. I'm just glad I used alcohol based paints or else this stuff would be everywhere.

Even then, my face prosthetic is coming up at the edge so I make a trip to the bathroom to re-adhere it. I re-adjust my jacket, making sure everything is in order before walking out.

I make my way through the halls, attempting to enter the exhibit room but I get shoved into the person beside me. Throwing a dangerous glance at the person, they continue on their way, clearly not phased.

Turning around, I start to apologize but stop mid sentence. "Oh, my beast!!" the man says, curtsying. I throw my head back, laughing. There is a tall man in front of me, dressed fully in Belle's ball gown and heels.

"Belle! You came back!" I say, smiling widely.

"Nice cosplay. I hope that's not your real face though." He says smiling, extending his hand. "Hi, I'm Timothy."

I take his hand, shaking it. "Hello, I'm y/n and no this is not my real face. Well, not completely. It's a prosthetic, you know, special effects makeup." We both laugh.

Before we can continue talking, a few people come up and ask for pictures. We oblige and turn for the camera. "This is such a cute couples cosplay!! I'm blown away!" One of them says, their phone making a shutter sound.

They thank us and move along. I face Timothy again. "Well, that was interesting." I say. He nods, making an adorable face. "I must ask, how did you come to decide on this costume? Don't get me wrong, it looks great but I'm just curious."

"Oh, yeah...It was a dare from my friends to cosplay as a girl and I thought I'd have fun with it. I like Beauty and the Beast so I thought it'd be cool. Now, seeing a female Beast is not what I was expecting today. But it definitely has become the highlight of the convention."

Through all that makeup, I can't tell what he actually looks like but I'm immediately attracted to his personality. He asks why I chose the beast as my costume.

"Well, I wanted to do something different and not stick to gender specific cosplay. I love a good gender-bender so I decided to do this, knowing no one else would. Seeing a male Belle definitely surprised me but in a good way." I finish.

He smiles at me and I laugh. Gesturing to the doors, he asks if I'd like to join him and his friends for lunch. "Sadly, I can't. I have some friends I'm meeting up with. But are you free tonight?" I ask, shocked at how forward I sound.

"Yeah! I, uh, I don't think I have anything planned." He says, stuttering a bit. I smile at him and we exchange numbers.

After we're done typing in the digits and names, we hand the phones back to each other. "Okay! Well, I'll see you later!" I say, waving before leaving. When my friends come, I tell them about Timothy and they about fall out of their chairs.

"Oh my god!! That's priceless! Imagine what you'll tell your kids one day!" Janet says, laughing so hard that tears make her mascara run.

Rolling my eyes, I tell them "I don't even know him!! We're going to do something later tonight and I'm not specifically looking to date anyone. If anything, I'd just like a new friend. Especially since you guys suck."

My friend Lucas pouts and Janet is banging her fist on the table, still laughing. These losers, man oh man. Good thing I love them... After I left lunch with my friends, I head back to the hotel I'm staying in. So happy to get this outfit off, I peel off my makeup and hop in the shower. It takes a while to get all the stiff hair jell out but I manage.

I put on a Kingdom Hearts T-shirt and a pair of jeans before flopping down on my bed. Sighing, I just lay there, enjoying the silence and cool air conditioning. After a while, I pick up my phone and see that I'm tagged in some photos. Scrolling through and liking them, my screen lights up with a text. "Timothy (Belle)". Laughing at his name in my phone, I click on the message to read.

"Hey y/n. It's Timothy. Just wanted to see what time you wanted to meet up tonight and if you had any clue on what to do around here? No rush. Let me know whenever."

Hmm. I'm not sure what there is to do either. Thanks to modern day technology, I google places around the area. There's a few things that could be fun and I make a list, sending it to him.

"The third one sounds fun. Let's say 6:30?"

"Okay, sounds good. :)" I reply as I'm plugging my phone in to charge. Well, that's only a few hours away...Should I change or stay in these clothes?

Deciding on the latter, I sit back and read a book to kill time.

Wow. Just saying, John Green is a teenage girl at heart. My bookmark slides into place and I lay the hardcover on the bedside table. I hop up and head to the bathroom to slap on some lip gloss and blush.

After wearing makeup all day, I don't want to kill my skin more than it already is. I grab my stuff and walk out the door, heading to my destination.

When I arrive, I'm surprised that there isn't as many people as I expected. There's still people but just less. Not knowing exactly what Timothy looks like, I stand by the entrance and give his phone a call.

Ring Ring Ring

The sound comes from a line of people waiting to pay their way in. My eyes scan the crowd and Timothy picks up the phone. "Hello?" I hear through the phone and faintly in front of me now.

Not answering, I see a dark haired boy holding a phone up to his ear. When I hear him repeat himself and it matches the lips of this person, I hang up. He looks confused but I walk up to him.

Once I'm in front of him, I greet him. He looks different without the makeup, wig, dress AND high heels on but I know I look drastically different as well.

He smiles at me, causing his hazel eyes squint. He's still tall without the heels, he has dark disheveled hair and lightly tanned skin. On the bridge of his nose, there are faint freckles marking his skin.

Dude, he's kinda beautiful.

"You hung up on me, y/n!!" He says, inviting me into the line. I awkwardly step in front of him, relieved that no one says anything about me cutting in.

"Yeah, well...I saw you pick up the phone and thought it'd be faster to just walk over. If you want, I can call you again and not hang up?" I say, teasing him.

"Hmm, tempting. Maybe later. By the way, you look extremely different without your costume on. A good different, just to clarify." He says, hand rubbing the back of his neck.

I thank him and say the same about his appearance. We slowly move in the line, talking about our experience at the convention to kill time. Turns out, we have a lot in common as well. He's just as much Fandom Trash as I am.

We reach the front and he insists on paying, which I thank him for and we pick up our golf clubs and choose the color of our golf balls. I'm lime green and he's orange.

"I'm surprised you chose mini golf, Timothy. I thought you'd be more of a movie type of person." I say, following him to the first course.

He laughs, setting up his shot. "Well, I love movies but you can't really get to know someone while watching a movie. At least in theaters." He hits the ball and immediately makes it into the hole.

Turning to me, he smirks, saying, "How about this: If I win, you have to go on a date with me. If you win, I do whatever you want. Deal?"

My arms cross over my chest and I chew on my lip. Timothy seems like the kind of guy most people take for granted. Sweet, funny and passionate about his likes. I don't want to be one of those people, I want to know him and him to know me.

"You're on, big time!"

She’s describe herself as either pansexual or sexually fluid.

Origin:

Born to parents that originated from the small town on the shores of Lake Ontario and Detroit to parents of Native descent (and Jewish on her great-grandfather’s side), Nyx’s early years were primarily spent on the run. From what she remembers her mother telling her, she was born almost a month early in a small cabin in the woods not far from Niagara Falls. Every couple of months, they would find a new place to stay or her parents would leave her with friends for weeks at a time. After their capture in New York City, Nyx was constantly shuffled between various foster homes, group homes and even juvie a couple of times.

Nova Type:

I think her abilities would fit in Mentis the most.

Ability:

Nyx’s abilities are… complicated. The official name is ‘power replication with limited power detection’ or as she calls it ‘ability radar/spidey senses and downloading’. She is drawn to people with abilities, it’s like a weird tug that Nyx isn’t really sure how to explain (aside from 'spidey senses’. She cannot tell you what abilities they have, but she can sense if someone is a Nova or not. And like when downloading something off the internet, it takes time for Nyx to 'copy’ their ability and store it in her 'mental hard drive’. Typically this is done by just standing within ten feet of them. Should the 'connection’ be interrupted, she will only have a fraction of that ability and it causes her to have headaches should the 'download’ be slow. The other option is 'instant download’ which is achieved through direct physical contact. It will cause the other Nova to feel a sudden unease and fatigue, while Nyx suffers from nosebleeds and migraines as it’s almost like getting punched. However, that is only the beginning as once Nyx 'learns’ an ability doesn’t mean she knows how to use it or control it or even know what it is. This can make her a liability and a danger especially with potentially catastrophic abilities, not to mention that she sometimes can’t get them to work when she wants them to or when she is angry they will flare up. Unfortunately, it doesn’t mean that she remembers what abilities she has absorbed. It’s kind of like putting them in a box which get put in an attic where it is easily forgotten and in order to be used, it has to be searched for. To help with this she has a literal physical written list of abilities she has absorbed and is aware of. Certain abilities are triggered by specific thoughts/feelings which are written next to those abilities. Some she has remembered, but it gives her peace of mind to have it.

When using her abilities, Nyx’s eyes will turn completely black and a strange black energy (like the negative of a bright image) will appear around her fingers or objects when certain abilities are used. Biography:

Complicated. Meaning: consisting of many interconnecting parts or elements; intricate. Synonyms include: complex, intricate, tangled, knotted and thorny.

If there was ever a word to describe you and the life you’ve lived. From the day you were born, you’ve had to fight. Born too early to parents that wanted a better world and didn’t know of any other way to get it then through violence. For so long, they had been unheard. Then they found others who felt just like them. They banded together for alone we are week, but together we are strong. Now they would make the world listen; they would make the system scared of them as they had been scared for generations. For the first time, they had the advantage and they were going to use it.

You barely remember what life was like before: always on the move, staying with family friends while your parents were away for weeks on end. You know that they loved you though and you can’t help but think that that only makes it so much worse.

It all changed in just a little more than two minutes. Those minutes will forever be engraved in your memory, haunting your dreams and thoughts like a plague. It starts with glass breaking, then smoke, the door breaking down, yelling (so much yelling), something heavy hitting the wall, gunshots. You cover your ears, it’s so loud. Tears roll down your cheeks as you press yourself into the corner, stuffed wolf clutched to your chest. You so desperately want to close your eyes but you can’t.

A gun turns towards you; familiar arms wrap around your small frame. Apples, she always smelled like apples.

Another shot rings.

And for the first time ever, you hear your father scream.

Criminals; terrorists; monsters; that’s what the world calls them but you never saw them that way. You saw your mother, who you look so much like, humming a half forgotten Ojibwe song as paper cranes floated around you heads. And your father, with his eyes so much like yours standing in the doorway with a soft smile on his face that never could reach his eyes.

Your memories fade, the happier ones that is. When you recall them now, it’s like looking through a fog. Some flashes are clear and others you aren’t even sure if that is what truly happened. The world however refuses to forget. Not only that, but it warps the memories. History is after all written by the victors.

Instead of moving from place to place with kind people at the door, instead all you know is cold. With each new placement, you pray it is different, but all it takes for someone to find out you’re Nova or just whose child you are. Still you try. You try so hard to show you are good, that you’re not like them. And yet at each and every turn, it’s like getting slapped in the face when all your effort turns to ash.

You cry when you find out you are more like your father then you thought and you hide it for as long as you can. You have his eyes, his abilities and soon his anger. Though you hate it, you can understand why they did what they did. With each disappointment, the anger builds, forming a wall inside you so that it’s harder to be hurt, harder to be cared for.

If he had put his mind to it, you have no doubt that your father could destroy the world. And if the world has taught you anything, it’s that you are your father’s daughter.

They see you as a monster and so they treat you like one. Is it so hard to understand why you began to believe it? Why you acted like one?

You always hold back, but you won’t be a victim anymore. You were raised better, you are better. And you would rather have that then be seen as weak. You don’t start the fights, but you end them. Some places have hidden demons and you run as far away as you can before you are forced to do something. They always find you though. In the end, you are always caught and dragged screaming away.

After years of grey walls and icy people, you are finally old enough to no longer be a ward of the state. But just because you are 'free’ doesn’t mean it’s better now. The day you register, the Warden just smiles at you in a way that sends a shiver up your spine. His words haunt you: 'I’ll be seeing you soon’. Two days later, it’s the anniversary of that horrible horrible day and you see people celebrate. As soon as you have the money saved, you get your biotag replaced with a clean one on the black market. But not before you cut out the old one and make it explode. It hurt and scars, but it was so worth it. The next day you are as far away as you can get.

You find yourself drifting, never staying in one place for long, hiding in plain sight. The days blur together, turning into weeks, then months and finally years. At the back of your mind, you feel the urge to join the Watchdogs. After all, your parents had been part of the inner circle and you had stayed with some of them. Eventually you push the thought away. They didn’t care, hell they didn’t even look for you. For so long you live like a shadow, content in your lonely life. For the first time, you are free from the cloud that is your parents’ name but you cannot run from your abilities. So you stay away from people, away from the cities, the asshole Wardens, the world in general. You don’t want to chance it, not that you ever had a chance in their world. Not with your name, you abilities, hell even with your bought biotag. Still, you can pretend you are someone else and maybe find some peace. Lonely peace, but at least some. That’s more than you can say for your parents. Then the bullshit Nova Protection Act came through. You were walking through some street a couple of months after it passed through out of necessity (God knows you sure as shit didn’t want to be in the city) when you saw it: a Warden dragging off a screaming kid to a truck while her mother tried to get to her child. Another Warden smacked her across the face, sending her to the ground. So many people watched and no one did anything. They just stood there like sheep as this woman still tried to fight against the armed man. Images flash before your mind: your mother screaming, you fighting against the Warden holding you as they dragged your father away.

In that second you realize that you’ve become a sheep. These four years have made you exactly what you hate. And it’s time to wake up.

The next few minutes are chaos. The sheep scatter, the Wardens lay crumpled on the ground and the child was in her mother’s arms. You told them to run and she thanked you. You can’t remember the last time that happened. It sparked something in you. For the first time you felt alive. You left the Wardens alive, but you did damage them a bit and their car was a smouldering ruin by the time you got away. Strange how you’ve followed in your parents’ footsteps: through foster homes, group homes, never staying in one place for long. It isn’t surprising that you’re labeled a fugitive.

It wasn’t long after that you found Yalena. She offered to help you to a safehouse but you refused. You had been sitting idle for far too long and you weren’t going to now. No, you were going to fight. It’s what you’re good at.

After all, maybe the world doesn’t need another hero, sometimes it needs a monster. And if you can save others from what was done to you, to your parents, what’s being done to innocents? Then you’ll be that monster.

Connections:

I imagine that Nyx’s relationship with Dinah is, like much of her life, complicated. There is so much potential between them and they could be amazing friends if only Nyx would give her the chance. She’s so envious of her because she’s so kind in spite of everything while she’s turned into what she is. She’s capable of things that she truly believes that she herself cannot give nor receive. If Nyx could, she would let her in, but she’s forced herself to be so guarded that she cannot help but think that there’s an angle behind Dinah’s kindness. After all, she must have an ulterior motive because why would she be nice to her

Even before, it was much the same. If she had met Dinah a little while before, her life might have been so different. Yet by then, she had given up any hope that someone might care about her and would’ve thought that Dinah should stop acting that way and 'grow up.’ She probably would have been a lot ruder and harsh towards her, but not cruel. A part of her would have been worried because it was only a matter of time before her spark died just like Nyx’s did.

With a little bit of time and especially if Dinah taught Nyx how to use her abilities, I see her opening up? Like going from not really enemies to like super super close? I kind of imagine that Dinah would be a calming presence and would be able to convince Nyx/hold her back from doing stupid reckless things. Plus I may have been stalking the Magicians tag and am totally going to reblog some gifsets cause they are literally perfect??? <3.<3 (kk I’m done rambling about them now I promise!)

For Leo, she’d be like 'ugh whatever’. Like she grates on Nyx’s nerves but she doesn’t really care? She pretty much just thinks of her as another asshat that thinks they know her when they know jack. Plus she would not appreciate being ordered around by her and acting like she’s better when they are all the same and want the same thing.

I’d love a partner in crime for her though? Someone that she’s kind of drawn to and they work well together? I imagine that they’re both fighters and tend to be at the front lines. Also maybe like a sibling figure? Someone who she kind of sees herself in a bit and just kind of connects to?

a time of reflection

Hello friends. This might come as a little surprise to you, but I am taking a break. For the next two weeks (more like the next 10 days) I will not be sharing a e-devotion.

Thank you for allowing me to share my ramblings, thoughts, what God is sharing with me. Often these are the things simply flowing through my heart as the days are patterned by our good and gracious God. They most of the time are easy to write and share, but there are times that it is anything but easy.

Let me take just a couple minutes, or lines, and tell you my heart is heavy with all the happenings around our world as of late. We have been crippled by the quarantine due to Covid-19. Now we step even further with the pain of the senseless death of George Floyd which has ignited protests and so much more across America.

I stand in solidarity with my brothers and sisters who have lived with oppression. This applies to my black friends as well as so many others who have gone through horrible things.

Racism is a sin. This past Sunday morning at The Community Fellowship Jammie Redd and I shared our hearts with the church around this is issue. You can watch that service on the church facebook page. Jammie leads Bridge of Hands Ministry which is a work sharing God’s love to those in need of hope and tangible items.

On Wednesday, June 10th beginning at 5:30pm at Albert Harris Elementary School the Martinsville March for Solidarity will be taking place. Local clergy are encouraged to participate. The march will end at the Martinsville Municipal Building uptown with a call to action (rain date is Thursday, June 11th).

God has a plan, and I want to be part of His plan. That is why I will stop, recharge myself and seek God for refreshing over the next several days. Thank you for allowing me to do this.

But I do want to leave you with a passage that is flowing through my mind. The church has a place in the world as the bride of Christ and the proclaimer of hope. The following verses remind us that Christ has called us, and as we follow Him there will be love and unity as an outcome.

Bristol 2s v Swansea 2s

After a rollercoaster of emotions debating the kick-off times with the Swansea captain, it was established that 16:30 would remain the time. Alas, with boxes of wine in tow, we jetted on down the motorway to the oh so familiar grounds of Swansea. We arrived a couple hours early, in good spirits as having played this team many times before, we were almost certain this was going to be a good match for us.

The whistle is blown and we kick-off on the pristinely kept pitch under the fairly ambient flood lighting. Jess passes the ball into the box, which is cleared by the keeper, but the attack is not over yet, as Lizzie chases down the line and gains a corner. Ella steps us and Jess fights for a head in the box, but it is unfortunately cleared.

After a series of throw ins, being both ours and theirs, Simona takes a shot on goal, but its slightly high. Bristol are first to the ball of the goal kick and Simona plays a lovely ball straight to Jess’ feet who takes a hard, low kick and scores bottom right hand corner! 1-0 Bristol. All within the first 10 minutes.

Our heads are straight back in the game with Simona pressing hard from the get-go and winning the ball back, eventually leading to us getting a corner. Ella takes again but it’s cleared, but with Kat and her magnetic head there is no ball too high or too hard to evade her. Swansea attempt to make a run down the wing, but Tegan and her rapid feet are there in all but a few seconds, safely removing the danger. A few moments later the ball is up in the air again, Jess heads a smooth ball to Clare who effortlessly crosses to Camilla; a series of fantastic events. Camilla controls the ball but the bodies in the box are piling up and she doesn’t get the chance to shoot.

Swansea are back on the attack for a matter of mere moments before Camilla interrupts swiftly passing to Ella, who takes a shot! On target but saved. Swansea keeps possession for a while and drive the play to Bristol’s box where they are graciously met by Ellen, clearing the ball a little bit too well. 3rd ball lost, oops!! (Good job we’re not losing our own equipment, eh Ellen!?) Bristol are quick to be back on the ball playing some good football. Lizzie gets a tad bit over excited and runs so fast that she is called offside before she gets her chance to shine. Swansea take their free kick, but Liv gets first to it and makes an effective pass straight into space for Clare who is unfortunately beat to the ball.

With Bristol working hard, the ball seems to be being played back and forth and at all ends of the pitch. Later in the game Jess clears their corner leading to Clare making a run, passing to Liv who shoots! Just slightly wide. Kat battles the counter ball gaining a corner. Lizzie steps up to the flag and crosses in but its cleared, but only as far as Camilla’s ready feet, who shoots again! Another on target shot but this keeper is not backing down! Liv and Lizzies enjoy a moment of telepathy as they aimlessly play a fabulous series of passes around all the players on the right, before being stopped at the final opportunity. Once again, Bristol is robbed of upping the goal count. Undefeated in her ball stopping ability Kat swoops in and gains possession for Bristol passing to Lizzie who shoots and misses, which is then followed by another shot from Jess M.

It’s the final 5 minutes of the first half and Bristol are on the ball, Ellie is powering through their midfield and passes to Clare, she’s one on one with the keeper and unfortunately the keeper wins this one again!

After a team talk from Jess, Bristol get their heads into the game and decide not to stoop to their level of ability, we know we can win this. The whistle goes off and Swansea are straight in, they make a few good passes and beat out a couple of our players, now dangerously close to the goal. Tegan and Kat put in their best efforts to stop the progression, but they are away with it. Ellen makes a play for the ball but falls and the goal is left open. They run the ball into the goal, 1-1, damn.

After some excellent play, Clare is subbed off for Chloe. Bristol play some good offensive football and Lizzies makes a run down the line crossing it in. The keeper comes out leaving the goal open and Camilla controls the ball passing it out to Chloe who takes a shot straight at the keeper. Jess is on the ball after a goal kick straight at her, passes up to Camilla who is now playing up at the top, and she takes a shot. Despite our best efforts we cannot get it pass this bloody keeper. Some time passes and its Jess on the ball again, she controls the ball on the edge of the box shoots! It hits the post and it’s in!! Oh wait, is it? Erm, whoops maybe not, celebrated a tad bit early there.

With her fresh legs, Chloe tries to turn on a player who isn’t too happy about it and is fouled. The minutes are dropping off this is prime opportunity for a free kick. Ella takes and it goes over the Swansea heads into the box but is cleared again! We cannot catch a break. We can almost taste the wine waiting for us in the changing room, but we are not ready to give up yet. We continue to press hard, but the games turned into a pinball match and no one seems to want to keep it on the ground, the clocks running down and tension is building, surely, we can get one more goal! It’s not the case though, Bristol has possession with seconds left, the whistle blown. Game over. Well played girls, we will get them next time!

985, Deep Sea Research Center

Ellie never sees their faces. They come and they go, and they're always wearing those stupid doctor's masks. They never touch her, either; they're always very careful about that. Nobody takes her by the arm to escort her anywhere. And the whole building is a circle; if she decides to split off from the path they're taking, she either ends up at an elevator she needs them to open for her, or she ends up where they wanted her anyway. Eventually.

They don't talk much, either, and when they do, their voices are always quiet. The loudest one — Nobu — speaks with an accent she doesn't recognize. Sometimes, though never during the day, Nobu wakes her up with the food buzzer and takes her to a balcony — the railing is electrified — so she can see the sea that surrounds them. It's endless water, churning and dark, white waves frothing up so close she could almost touch them.

"Leviathan is angry," he tells her one of those nights, staring not out at the water but up at the stars. "The Brothers are angry. Bahamut is angry. The world is not what it should be."

He didn't ask her any questions, so she doesn't say anything. It's just safer not to talk unless they want her to. She hates that she knows what's safe and what isn't, that she cares, and there's something in her head that hates it, too. It's angry all the time, and not just get-mad-and-yell angry, but the kind of angry that throws and breaks things and tries to hurt people.

She doesn't think it's always been there. But she can't remember a time without it.

"You, Elektra," Nobu says, "will help us make the world right again. For Leviathan, and the Brothers, and Bahamut. You will make all the skies as black as this one, won't you?"

Ellie says, "Yes," and the thing that curls around the back of the inside of her head seems to smile.

996, Dollet

The exam is going basically swimmingly, with them waiting for the retreat order, and Foggy has himself almost convinced that he really <i>can</i> be a SeeD. He'll just keep using his Para-Magic, and the hurting and the killing people will all blur in with the good stuff, like Matt discovering a box of kittens in a war zone or Marci and a little blond girl smiling at each other. It'll be okay, he's telling himself; he and Matt and Marci can do this.

He's still telling hiself that when the giant robot spider shows up. They hear it first, and Matt turns in the direction it's coming from.

"It's big," he says — like Foggy couldn't have guessed that — and then adds, "Metal? Machinery? It's — it has a lot of legs?"

Marci's off the apartment stoop in seconds, knife in her hand. It won't do her any good against a tank, but she's their demolition man, too, and she's got the look on her face that means she's thinking of how she's going to blow something up. She tucks the knife back into one of her boots and reaches for the team's grenades. Foggy watches her eyes narrow, but Matt is turned northward, toward the godawful rumble, and his whole body is tense.

"We need to run," he says, and he's already tucked his escrima sticks back into their holster at his belt. He doesn't even bother to adjust the band on his sunglasses the way he usually does when he's preparing to do something athletic. "The retreat order's been given."

Foggy doesn't even bother to ask how Matt knows that. He just checks the baldric holding his trident against his back and flails silently at Marci until she puts the explosives away.

The thing they thought was some kind of weird tank turns out to be a giant robot spider. It's literally as tall as the buildings in downtown Dollet, and it's chasing three other SeeD cadets. Foggy's pretty sure he recognizes Dincht — the wild, electrified hair and the face tattoo pretty much give it away — but they don't have time; they're right on the heels of the spider and the other SeeDs, trying to make it back to the harbor.

They almost make it. Hell, they're only a block away from the harbor when it all turns to complete and total shit. But there's a balcony-bridge thing that connects two buildings across the street from each other, and as Marci — always the fastest of the three of them — turns to run under it, the spider does, too.

The spider doesn't bother jumping, or lifting any of its legs higher, or ducking. The spider just fucking slams into the skybridge and huge chunks of stone start to fall immediately. It keeps moving forward and Marci tries to stop herself.

No amount of Para-Magic is ever going to blur away the moment that Marci ends up going under the falling bridge, turning her forward momentum into a desperate slide, and a chunk of rock bigger than her upper body hits her outstretched leg. He will always remember the snap-crunch, the way her whole face twists, the way her body bends in on itself for a moment.

He flings out a hand and casts Protect on her.

The bridge keeps tumbling down, and her face, pale and tight with pain, is the last thing he sees before the dust cloud rises.

1006, Dollet

Maybe it's something about being this far north, or maybe the wind off the sea has blown in yet another little squall, but it's raining in Dollet again, Karen notices as she steps onto the street. Drizzling, really; an endless-feeling fall of gray rain onto dark gray cobblestones, with a gray sky overhead. She doesn't own an umbrella anymore, so she stops at one of the many little street-side coffee stands to pick up a tray of coffees and a newspaper.

It's made the front pages of three different newspapers. Three headlines, but they all mean: insurgents have attacked the radio tower. Again.

She looks automatically north, up at the radio tower. There's a little building at the base of the Dollet cliffs, where the radio team do most of their broadcasting from, but that's never been the insurgents' target. No, they want the tower. The same tower that Galbadia had wanted ten years ago.

She hands over a few crumpled gil and takes everything, holding the paper over her head as she keeps making her way uptown. A simple Protect spell and the paper keep the rain out of her face as she passes shopfronts and cafes and art galleries tucked in next to houses that grow more and more ramshackle. Nelson & Murdock rent a shop underneath a lodging house, one of the rare basements in Dollet, and she smiles as she heads in.

Foggy opens the door for her. He reaches out to steady her as her heel sticks — again — on the final step and she lurches a little into the office. She drops her grip on the newspaper and saves the coffee, even as he catches her gently by the shoulders. It's quick, it's easy, it happens every damn time it rains, and the only reason she even notices it this morning is the concern all over his face as they disentangle and he bends to grab the newspaper.

He's tossed it into the nearest trash can by the time she sets the coffee down on the front desk.

"Estharica for all of us," she says. "Good morning, Foggy. You're here early."

Foggy's answering smile is strained, and so is his return greeting, but he takes the coffee. Makes a big show of sniffing it and saying, "Oh, this is going to taste so good. Get in my belly, coffee. So much better than Karen's, yes you are."

"Thanks," she says dryly, and he flashes her a smile that's a lot closer to genuine.

"Good to see you," he tells her, and he sounds relieved enough that she might need to worry.

"Is Matt in yet?"

Foggy's whole expression darkens. He shakes his head before sitting heavily in one of the office chairs. "And you'll notice that there aren't any clients in the house today. It's not that I object to you working for the radio station, Karen. Hyne knows we're all working wherever we can. This whole city's economy is in the shitter. But you've got to stop —"

"Stop what, doing my job?"

"Your other job." He says it so firmly that she's suddenly reminded of his past in SeeD. "We're your day job, Karen. I get your commitment to the truth — I totally respect it. But can you be a little less committed to truths Reyes will blacklist us for?"

"What won't she blacklist us for?"

"You could talk about the kitten that Galbadian soldier pulled out of the wreckage of the X-ATM092," he points out, like that's at all helpful. "You could, I don't know, not talk about what the Estharian Peace Keeper brigade is going to find when they come back here. You could talk about how Dollet has welcomed its new Galbadian overlords peacefully for the last ten years."

She points at the newspaper. "Peacefully?"

He shrugs. "You don't have to talk about —"

The bell over the door chimes, and they both turn. A woman wearing the kind of dress Karen is pretty sure only appears on mannequins in Deling City has stepped into their office. The dress itself is black, and sleek, and the boots she wears with it are flat-soled enough to be practical, but hug the curve of her calf — and are bright red.

The woman sweeps her gaze over the office, and then her eyes light on Foggy. Her expression changes to something that's either disinterest or distaste. "Franklin," she says.

"Elektra." Foggy's voice starts cold, but turns brightly sarcastic. "How nice to see you again! When will you leave? I mean, don't let us keep you; I'm sure you have islands to buy. Unless you're back to using Daddy's money to play with SeeD?"

"My father died last week, Franklin," she says. "And I really don't understand your hostility to me. I know your little business is struggling —"

"This is Dollet. Everyone's business is struggling," he snaps. "Doesn't mean we want anything from you. Of all the law offices in all the world, why did you think you could walk into mine?"

"Yours and Matthew's," she corrects, almost gently.

Foggy stares at her for what feels like a long, long time.

When it's clear he's not about to answer that, the woman — Elektra — says, "I'm here because I need a lawyer. I've noticed that a stream of my father's profits in Esthar are going to some very interesting places indeed. I'd like to — fully investigate my options regarding those funds."

Karen picks up the coffee tray and settles herself on the other side of the desk. She'd been intending to run the accounting software today. Might as well dive into that so that Foggy will take this client back into his office and yell at her there, leaving Karen and what he likes to call her "truth habit" safely out of it.

"That sounds great," Foggy says in a tone that is actively insincere. "Why don't you go fully investigate the other side of that door?"

Elektra smiles. She reaches into an expensive-looking purse and drops a business card onto Karen's desk. Then she bends down, flips it over, and scrawls a series of numbers on the back. "You can reach me here, while I'm in town. Call if you change your mind."

And then she's gone in a swirl of black fabric, leaving only an elegant business card and the scent of Galbana lilies. The bell over the door somehow doesn't chime when she swings the door open.

And Foggy deflates. He slumps into one of the chairs by Karen's desk. He seems at once to scrunch himself so he can fit, even as his legs sprawl out on the floor. It's a position she associates more with melodramatic teenagers than frustrated lawyer. Eventually, he brings his hand up to rub at his forehead and sighs.

"First you and the radio," he says. "And then Matt — and now this. I might as well get the hell out of here and go back to Balamb. Their economy can't possibly be as hopelessly fucked as Dollet."

She doesn't ask what's wrong with Matt. She's got a good idea she already knows.

Rocking the cradle Chapter 13: Pain

It was so easy

So PITIFULLY easy

Noémie had no clue that she could simply walk through the main doors and saunter her way through the halls with no resistance.

Everyone in the front office must’ve been getting high because even with her scary looking Akuma outfit not even the janitor glanced in her direction

“Such a shame too” she sighed “I really wanted to test out all these fun gifts I got”

She was wondering for a while, peering through each classroom and looking for the daycare, when she stumbled upon something quite interesting

“So her daddy is a student here. How cute” She cooed, watching him from the other side of the classroom door. She saw him talk candidly with Marinette for a moment and figured she must be the busy mom.

Noémie narrowed her gaze “Both parents, happy little baker’s life, not a care in the world. Oh my sweet El, it’ll be so nice to burn all of this to the ground in front of your very eyes.”

“PARDON ME MADEMOISELLE”

Noémie had to hold her ear to keep from losing the eardrum. She lazily turned to be faced with a rather prudish looking old man. He looked absolutely gobstopped by her very presence.

“I am not sure whose parent you are but I cannot allow you to parade around the halls in such outlandish and inappropriate attire!”

She took quite a bit of offense to that last part. Yes her outfit was a bit more...ornate than the average attire, what with the flashy overcoat draped over her shoulders and stainless steel accessories wrapped around her waist and neck.

But inappropriate? Showing a bit of midriff is always fashionable and these girls need to see what real rack can look like.

The old man hadn’t slowed his ramblings in the least by the time she came to realize 5 minutes had passed.

Quite over her impromptu lecture she took a long drag of a cigarette she was hiding in her cleavage.

“MADEMOISELLE WE DO NOT PERMIT SMOKING IN THIS ESTABLISHMENT!!! Are you even aware of the numerous health ramifications of such a repugnant-”

Smoke poured onto his face like water as she blew it out slow. Despite his long harbored hatred for the stench the aroma seemed...pleasant. His eyes glazed over as he stared into her jade green eyes.

‘how pretty’ He thought to himself in a daze ‘They remind me of mother’

“That’s my good boy” she chuckled wickedly “Now then, Mommy needs your help.”

He nodded eagerly. Whatever his dearest mother needed he’d provide. Money, power, it didn’t matter, he’d give this woman the world.

“Be a dear and take me to the kindergarten, ok?” The man was more than excited to lead the way and instantly turned on his heels to fulfill what he considered to be his destiny.

Before leaving, Noémie took another good look into the classroom. Her eyes scanned over the seats and by chance she met eyes Marinette herself.

She had no idea who the gaudy woman was but gave a sort of half smile to be polite. Noémie returned it with a similar gesture and went about her way.

“What an odd woman” Marinette mumbled to herself “She looks tacky as all hell but I’m sure she’s just someone’s parent”

Eloise giggled in absolute glee as she tucked herself away in the storage cabinets with Sammy and Sophie.

She was getting much better at coping with her claustrophobia. So much so that she considered herself to be the Hide-n-seek champion. Over and Over she was making herself be one of the hiders so that she could face the fear head on. The first few games were hard, she kept giving herself up so she wouldn’t have to be alone anymore. But, after the twins offered to be hiding buddies with her (Sammy a little more reluctantly than his twin) she grew to find some ok things about the dark. You can share secrets, maybe take a mini nap, or even just imagine what could be happening on the other side the possibilities were endless really.

“Oooook everyone!” Announced her teacher, Mlle Morel “I’m gonna start counting! So I hope you’re all ready to get snatched up by the seeking troll!”

Eloise giggled again but was shushed by her favorite grump, Sammy “Shut it lemonhead you wanna get snatched up first!”

“It’s not so bad actually” replied an overly composed Sophie “you get hugs and first picks for snacks”

Eloise pouted “Yea but that’s no fun”

“It is when you can sneak off with an extra cracker pack”

“Clam it you two! she’s already started counting”

They all listened close to hear, all three pressing their ears to the door. She was slow and methodical about her counting and they could hear footsteps grow closer and closer to where they were until she landed on one.

And stopped right in front of their hiding spot

“Ready or not,” She called “I’m coming for ya!”

Their hearts were pounding hard. They could hear the ruffling of her skirt as she knelt down to the cabinet on the floor. They could even feel her hands grip onto the handles to pull them ajar.

Elly grabbed onto Sammy tight with a giddy smile on her face. Her eyes were squeezed shut in excitement.

“Oh! Hello there. Are you looking for someone?”

The joyous conclusion never came

“Why yes. I’m looking for one of your students. Her name is Eloise Etienne. I am her mother”

It never would

Eloise’s happy smile flickered out like a blown light bulb

“No” She whispered in a trembling voice “no she can’t be here!”

She tried her hardest to shrink into the corner of the cabinet, pushing up against Sammy who was first to react

“Who?” He whispered “Elly, who can’t be here?”

Her breathing was growing shallower by the minute “My mommy. My real mommy, they said I’d be safe!”

He had no clue what she could be talking about. He looked over at his sister who was peeking through a crack in in the doors. Whatever was out there was bringing Elly back to her days before the orphanage. They had all been there at one point, but this felt far harsher than a small panic attack.

Sammy did the best thing he could think of. He pulled her into a tight hug.

“Listen, I don’t know what’s going on but freaking out will not help it’ll only hurt so instead of thinking of what could happen just stop thinking. I will keep you safe and Mlle Morel will fix it. Just listen.”

Mlle Morel was on high alert of this intruder. She was no parent and there was no doubt that she was dangerous to everyone in the room.

Even so, Mlle Morel put on her usual sunshine teacher face to try and talk this woman into leaving.

“My deepest apologies mademoiselle, I’m afraid there’s no one by that name. Perhaps you may have the wrong building.”

Noémie sauntered right up to the teacher, chest to chest “Is that the answer you’re going with?”

Mlle Morel did not take a single breath in her response “That’s the only answer I can provide you. I apologize for not being more of assistance”

Noémie placed her hands behind her back and leaned down to meet the the teacher eye to eye. A mildly amused smile stretched across her lips “You know this city is quite the spectacle”

Their stand-off was intense as they held each other’s gaze “Growing up in my little ‘town’ I never got to see these monuments. The Louvre, Notre Dame, even the eiffel tower. Imagine a Parisian who’s never seen the eiffel tower!”

She stood back in supposed defeat “But alas there are some things that never change no matter where you go”

Mlle Morel was starting to think this woman was just lost and slightly off her rocker…

Until Noémie’s hand gripped at her throat and hoisted her high into the air, her head hitting the ceiling

“There will always be lying little sluts like you who try to interfere in family business”

Mlle Morel felt like a ragdoll as she was carelessly flung against a wall behind her. Her back struck hard, and she crumbled on the carpeted floor. Sammy had to quickly cover Elly’s ears so she couldn’t hear.

“Eloise my love!” Noémie sung out into the empty classroom “It’s your mommy! Don’t you wanna come out and give me a hug?”

Tears fell like rain off of Elly’s cheeks. Even if she wanted to move, her legs wouldn’t respond no matter how much the voices screeched for her to run.

A little girl with brown pigtails raced out from behind the teacher’s desk.

“Hello! And who is this little friend”?

The girl was ripped from her escape by the ends of her pigtails, Noémie’s fingers wrapping onto the hair atop her scalp. Sophie covered her mouth in horror for their friend, Colette

She lifted the wriggling brunette right to her face, which held a wild, teeth glaring grin “Do you know my little girl? She’s not hard to miss. She looks like she’d be your age”

She suddenly gripped her ear in pain as it was blasted with static

“What are you doing!?” barked a livid sounding Hawkmoth

She groaned “Um fulfilling your half of our deal. Duh”

“I did not agree to child abuse you wretched bitch!”

“Tut-tut my sweet partner in crime, You agreed I could get your miracu-whatevers however I see fit. This is most fitting to me”

“Then I’ll ask it again before I come down and slap you like your last pimp. What the fuck are you doing?”

“Obtaining light” she ripped out her ear pieces and crushed them under her stiletto boot

Colette pushed hard against her attackers arms “P-please let me go! I won’t come into your r-room again Big sis, please I just wanna go back!”

“Sister!?” Noémie howled in laughter “Are all of you drop-offs this fucked in the head!?”

She was growing tired of listening to Colette’s pathetic sobbing sounds, so she got a very ‘practical’ idea in her twisted mind.

“Hey now no need to cry. I can actually make the bad thoughts go away” The sobbing died down as colette prayed that the woman wasn’t lying. She looked up to meet a smiling and almost warm expression. And for a moment she honestly believed her.

But Eloise knew better than to believe such a lie as she silently wailed into Sammy’s shirt.

Colette’s eyes grew wide as flames danced across Noémie’s hand. That smile never left even as the flames eased closer to her bright hazel eyes

“I’ll replace those painful memories with fresh ones so that you’ll never think, or see, that mean old big sister ever again. Aren’t I such a nice mommy?”

Elly tried her best to block out her friend’s shrieks of terror. It’s not as if she could fight her own mother, so how could she help? The twins hugged her close to calm her, but nothing was helping

But then she heard the one thing she could do to help

“El, if you come out now and leave with me. I won't sear this girl's eyes shut. I'll leave the whole class alone right now and they can all go back to their merry lives”

Every cell in her body screamed out for her to sit still, but she still forced herself into the open

“I’m here mommy!” She croaked out, standing in the middle of the room, alone

Noémie snuffed out the flame and dropped Colette on the floor

“There’s my pretty girl!” She gushed, strolling up to Elly and kneeling down to play with her long hair “You’ve been a naughty little rascal haven’t you”

Elly flinched as her mother’s lazily ran her fingers through her hair “Running away, making me worry so much about you. And then hiding from me, causing all this pain for everyone else around you. How shameless, your mama and papa must be ashamed of you”

Her heart stopped when that thought flashed through her mind. She held tightly to the hem of her skirt

“But don’t worry, even if they rightfully drop you on the street, I’ll be right there to pick you back up. I’m the only one who will ever truly love you Eloise, because despite you being a worthless, happiness sucking burden, you are my burden to bear alone. You understand don’t you?”

Eloise didn’t bother raising her head as she nodded, mute.

“Please mommy, just...please keep your promise”

Noémie calmly collected her into her hold and without barely a sweat disappeared over the roofs to wreck havoc on the city

The last thing the twins saw as they ran from the cabinet was eloise green eyes clouded over in helpless submission.

Day 5,6,7(whoops)

After arriving back to the hotel at some time between 3:30-4:30am I decided to force both myself and Ellie to pack so we didn’t have to do it in our hungover state the next morning/so we could get a little bit more sleep before check out. However two hours later I was awoken by a rather shaken up Ellie who was panicking that her travelling companion couldn’t even be woken up by the sound of a fire alarm which had apparently been blaring for the past five minutes. After the fire alarm stopped, Ellie managed to easily slip back into a deep slumber almost instantly but surprise surprise, I on the other hand couldn’t get back to sleep, again.

Ellie awoke around 11am my hangover had taken a turn for the worse so I dragged her to McDonald’s as I had been craving it since I woke up. 20 minutes later I was sat in front of probably the biggest McDonald’s order I have ever made, only to then realise that I actually couldn’t stomach it.

We arrived at the airport early (a first for both Ellie and myself) and now that I had regained my appetite we decided to finish off our time in Hong Kong the only way we knew how, to look for the most British looking restaurant we could find. One pizza express later we boarded the plane.

I was seated next to a very wealthy looking business man on the plane and after a journey of silence, he surprisingly turned to me once we reached Bangkok and started chatting with me about our travels so far and what had brought us to Bangkok. 5 minutes later and he had invited us to share his limousine ride back from the airport and paid for it to drop us off at our hotel too. What a guy.

Due to his recommendation, we made our way to the Lebua State Towers roof top bar which is the hotel the hangover 2 movie was set in. Once we got to the top of the building we were absolutely blown away by the beauty of the city aswell as the classiness of the people who were surrounding us. We quickly befriended a group of New Yorkers who we later found out were all bankers in Wall Street, and were staying in the suite 3 floors down. 2 free cocktails later we were exploring their suite which was honestly the most impressive thing I have ever seen. A few hours later we headed out to a fancy night club in the red light district of Bangkok.

Due to the size of the apartment they offered us two nights free accommodation in their spare room of the suite. We woke up the next morning and headed down to the most insane champagne breakfast. At some point during the next few hours Ellie started violently throwing up due to her excessive vodka consumption the night before. However I believe that this was all due to karma as she had spent the previous morning bragging about how she doesn’t get hangovers whilst I was the one in the fragile state.

As Ellie was unable to move from her bed for the majority of the day (besides sprinting to the toilet to throw up) I decided to spend the day relaxing and making the most of the hotel services and the jacuzzi style bath in our en suite.

At 5am the next morning we left the hotel of dreams and headed 20 minutes down the road to a new hotel to begin our tour down to Singapore. As the state of our ‘travelling’ so far has been some what questionable due to scoring lucky on a multiple occasions as well as not yet having set foot in a hostel, we feel like we now may finally start living like travellers. Our group consists of 16 people ranging from age 18-26 and many different nationalities, however one member of the group actually lives five minutes down the road from Ellie (it’s true, you can never escape bucks).

After a trip to the grand palace and a Thai massage (which was an interesting experience to say the least) we boarded a night train to Surat Thani where I ironically had the best sleep that I’ve had since leaving the UK. We are now on a bus on our way to the beach where we are spending the next few days.

Lucifer Season 5 Episode 4: It Never Ends Well for the Chicken

Lucifer star Tom Ellis teased early in the year that the series would feature a “full blown” musical episode late in its fifth season, one of many indicators that the writers planned to pull out all the stops in what was initially thought to be the show’s final run. Though it appears fans will have to wait for the second half of the current installment to experience this narrative divergence, showrunner Ildy Modrovich’s team takes another creative leap with the noir detective story “It Never Ends Well for the Chicken.”

Any time a show steps out of its comfort zone to explore varied storytelling techniques, there’s a good chance success may not necessarily follow. That’s certainly not the case here as Lucifer puts familiar characters into exciting new roles that allow the actors to explore sides previously hidden or obscured. Unfortunately, Trixie often gets lost in the mix, and though some of her finest moments occur when she appears opposite Maze, here, her interaction with Lucifer during their modified game night brilliantly drives the episode despite her still limited screen time.

It’s difficult to miss Lucifer’s excitement as he readies the penthouse in anticipation of Chloe and Trixie’s arrival for a relaxed evening with friends, and when the detective fails to accompany her daughter, she sends several unambiguous messages. Even though Chloe may not be ready to confront Lucifer about what she’s learned from Michael, it’s clear she trusts him with her only child, a point that should not be underestimated. It’s true that Trixie tells Lucifer she was with her dad, but given the elaborate ruse that becomes clear at the end, that might not be true. Whether he understands the subtext here or not, we don’t know, but Trixie’s precociousness shines through as she manipulates Lucifer into telling her a story in lieu of another boring game of Monopoly.

Lucifer doesn’t waste the opportunity to spin a compelling yarn, and the writers delightfully embrace one of cinema’s classic periods to explore the mystery of the missing ring. However, the genius of the episode’s structure also includes the homage to the classic film The Princess Bride and its delightful narrative interplay between a boy and his grandfather as the tale unfolds.

Though there are murders to solve, it’s really the backstory of the ring Lucifer wears that comprises the bulk of the account presented in black and white, and we suddenly find ourselves smack in the middle of a 1940s noir detective story in which the renowned chanteuse at the local club is none other than Maze’s mother Lilith. Lesley-Ann Brandt (Maze/Lilith) takes on a persona that allows her room to show off not only a powerful singing voice and familiar saucy attitude but also to develop a character who battles some of the same issues of self-esteem we’ve seen in Maze. When Lilith blasts some of the boss’ boys with the retort that “I’m nobody’s girl,” her statement signals a refrain we’ve heard from Maze who often feels like an outsider abandoned by Lucifer and most recently Chloe.

“It Never Ends Well for the Chicken” does a wonderful job of world building and seamlessly immerses the audience in the reasonably authentic ambiance of post-war New York City. And though the many references and connections to the present day storyline work for the most part, a few manage to fall a bit flat even as they manage to still evoke a smile. “The Devil solving crime. It’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.” Of course, young Trixie remains in the dark about Lucifer’s true identity, but when 1946 Lucifer immediately seeks out Jack Monroe for help finding the ring, Chloe’s daughter calls him out and asks “why does it have to be a guy?”

Needless to say Trixie’s request for a “gender balanced narrative” paves the way for Laura German (Chloe Decker/Jack Monroe) to don a man’s suit and hat, and we easily move past the fact that we’re watching Chloe in the guise of a Chandleresque protagonist. While the value of fan service can certainly be debated, when you’re able to bring back Tricia Helfer (Charlotte Richards) to portray Jack’s wife Shirley in this narrative shift, everybody wins. We don’t typically see Helfer in a submissive role, but she absolutely nails it as the frustrated partner of a man whose struggles extend far beyond his marriage. At the heart of the episode is, of course, the struggle Chloe and Lucifer face as they decide whether or not to repair their damaged relationship, and Jack’s decision to ask his wife for help in the case and then later admit he wants to talk about their marriage, speaks to Chloe’s underlying desire to reconcile with Lucifer.

However, it’s the brief exchange that Lucifer has with Jack that lays bare what we’ve all been thinking since the beginning of the season. Like Lucifer and Chloe, Jack’s meeting of Shirl was no accident, and though he harbors resentment towards his wife, he admits he still loves her. Lucifer asks the obvious question: have you thought about simply forgetting the past? And we have to wonder whether Chloe will be able to see beyond the celestial setup and value the real relationship she’s forged with Lucifer during their partnership?

Even though Jack and Lucifer’s search for the missing ring and subsequent related murders drive most of the action, there’s little doubt that Lilith’s belief that the ring confers immortality parallels Maze’s belief that she’ll be forever alone. In the most visually stunning and emotionally powerful scene of the episode, Lilith tells Lucifer that she’s learned what connects humans is the knowledge that their lives are not infinite. “I think I’ve been immortal long enough,” she admits, gives Lucifer the recovered ring, and then walks away as he stands in the night under a street light, the wet road glistening beneath his feet. It’s the quintessential noir ending, and even though the episode proper still has a few minutes to run, we should consider that this might also signal the end of Maze’s spiritual funk.

However, like all great mystery tales, there are twists still to be examined, and when Trixie asks Lucifer whether Shirl and Jack live happily ever after, we assume she’s projecting these characters on to the real life situation with her mother and Lucifer. Though she contends they fixed everything, the real life story proves a bit more complicated, and when she encounters Maze in the elevator, the demon hands her money signifying that Maze set the whole thing up to get the story of the ring from Lucifer. Maze visits her mother Lily Rose (Lilith) to ask the fundamental question that plagues her. “Why did you abandon me?” Interestingly, Lilith makes no attempt to assuage her daughter’s feelings leaving Maze no better off than when she started this journey.

There are some nice touches with the murders, and since this is Lucifer, it’s perfectly acceptable to take an extra liberty or two. Lucky Larry interrupts Jack and Shirl’s dinner and falls dead in their doorway, a knife embedded in his back. Even here it’s difficult to hold back a smile, and when they go to question Dan’s counterpart, Willy the Sausage King (Kevin Alejandro/Dan), the egocentric portrait painting session stands in stark contrast to Chloe’s ex’s attempts at true self improvement. Later, when Jack and Lucifer recreate Lucky Larry’s murder, it’s impossible to miss the parallel between Larry and Chloe’s feeling that Lucifer stabbed her in the back.

Cigar smoking club owner Tony Stampanato gives Aimee Garcia (Ella Lopez) an opportunity to try out her masculine wings, but it’s her deathbed scene that plays well within the overly stylized story. Bringing Egyptian mystery always adds interest no matter the crime scenario, and the Eye of Horus drawn on the dead man’s eye is no exception as it leads Jack and Lucifer to a dealer in black market occult items. Melvin the Magnificent (DB Woodside/Amenadiel) offers a more comic presentation with his multifaceted con-man routine, but when Doctor Linda’s bartender turns out to be the brains behind the operation, any thoughts that these two are underused melt away.

To refer to “It Never Ends Well for the Chicken” as a novelty episode just feels wrong, and even though that designation might technically be accurate, it fails to acknowledge the deep complexity of this narrative experiment. Lucifer will return to normal next episode, but the foray into 1946 leaves an indelible mark that only enhances the anticipation for the aforementioned musical outing. The wait is killing me.

Interview: Building a Jurassic Park Jeep!

Hey everyone – Tom back here today, and today we are diving into the world of the Jurassic Park Motorpool. More specifically, today we will be having a chat with Rachel – another UK-based Jurassic fan who has endeavoured to build her own replica Jurassic Park jeep.

Before we jump into today’s article, I wanted to say a big thanks to Dan from JP20, who was kind enough to put me in touch with Rachel. I had a blast podcasting with Dan at Paradise Wildlife Park a couple of weeks back (Listen here: ) where we spoke all about the process of building a replica Jeep. Without any further ado, let’s learn a little bit more about the process of making your own Jurassic Park or Jurassic World replica vehicle:

Hey Rachel – thanks for talking to us! Firstly, we’ll start off light – how did you get into the Jurassic Park series?

Like most kids, I went through my phase of being crazy about dinosaurs – just that mine coincided with the 1993 release of the blockbuster film Jurassic Park. I was 10 years old and I begged my parents to take me to see it. We were on holiday that summer in the UK and we finally went. It was a single screen cinema in an old theatre, rammed full of people – but I was enthralled!

I had never seen such amazing CGI – seeing all my favourite dinosaurs ‘alive' and real! The character Dr Ellie Sattler became an instant hero for me – she was smart, athletic, brave and strong! Christmas came, and my sister bought me a VHS copy of Jurassic Park for my present – I practically wore it out (I still have that copy!).

So obviously, we are at the point where we have five films now – which is your favourite and why?

Obviously, the original has a special place in my heart and will always for me be the best. After that, I would say, for me, that it’s closely followed by Jurassic World. I loved all the nods to the original Jurassic Park film and thought it was a great reboot of the franchise. After that, I’d say The Lost World comes in third with The Fallen Kingdom coming in fourth. Both films had great points, but equally some very cringe-worthy moments!

It’ll come as little surprise to fellow JP aficionados, that Jurassic Park III gets my boobie-prize as the worst of all the films. Talking dinosaurs? Really? Not even the Spinosaurus could save that mess of a film!

Okay, so today we are talking specifically about Jeeps – and about making your own Jurassic Park Jeep. What made you want your own Jurassic Park jeep?

I always found the jeeps in the film to be really cool. I got into messing around with cars in the early 2000s and being a time served engineer means I'm mechanically minded. I started cosplaying Dr Sattler about 5yrs ago and the JP jeep is the ultimate cosplay accessory! So, I started looking for the right base car and one landed in my lap at the right time!

When we spoke to Dan from JP20, he was explaining the difference between going for full accuracy and going partly there. How far are you planning to go with your Jeep?

For me, it’s important to get my jeep as “screen accurate” as far as possible. I'm very picky about being as exact as I can be. My jeep is a UK right-hand drive car, the film cars are all left-hand drive, so that’s one, practical concession. With that said I’ll be converting my UK spec Jeep to have all the US lighting features etc. The position of the steering wheel will be the only difference I'm willing to accept!

Have you decided on a number you’d like to go with for your own Jeep yet?

Yeah, I'm going to make a JP18. There are 4 Jeeps featured in the Jurassic Park film:

JP10 driven by the vet who cares for the sick Triceratops

JP12 driven (and crashed) by Dennis Nedry and lastly…

Jeeps 18 and 29 which are used when the group arrive by helicopter on the island.

Jeep 18 is in the famous scene when Ian Malcolm, Dr Grant and Dr Sattler first see the Brachiosaurus. Being the jeep that Ellie rode in, naturally it’s the jeep I’m going to build.

So, you’re already very into your cars and mechanics – something which other prospecting Jeep owners may not be! How have those skills crossed over, and has this been the hardest mechanical project you’ve worked on yet?

I’m an engineer by profession and a mechanic in my spare time. I’ve rebuilt cars from bare shells on a few occasions and carried out several engine conversions. In that respect, building a replica JP18 is straightforward, as there is little mechanical work involved, in theory. I know plenty of Jeep builders who aren't mechanically minded but it doesn’t stop them achieving their goals.

Unfortunately, The Jeep has been testing so far; It's my first American made project car, so I've had to buy some imperial tools! None of my tools fitted properly!

Unfortunately, I’ve had to get into this project further than planned; A month after I got my jeep my boyfriend hydro-locked (water was sucked into the engine) the original engine while teaching me how to drive my jeep off road through some water.

Finding a replacement engine and getting it fitted has taken longer than I hoped. Jeep parts are not as common in the UK as they are in America. We had to track down someone breaking a Cherokee to source a replacement engine and then getting it fitted has taken far longer than I hoped.

What’s been the hardest part to acquire for your own Jeep so far?

Where to start! The YJ Jeep Wrangler wasn’t sold a lot in the UK at the time, so spares and information are difficult. Add to that a lot of the ‘screen accurate’ parts were only sold in the USA and that was 25 years ago.

Fortunately for me, being a car enthusiast (I love Japanese 90s cars) I'm used to going the extra mile to find hard to get optional or aftermarket performance parts. It’s an attitude you need to have when looking for those rare parts.

Instead of hunting for tuning parts in Japan, I’ve been hunting for decals, lighting, winches, doors and many other parts. Much of it has come from America, but I’ve also had luck through Facebook and having international friends connects us all in a way I’ve never known before.

I've been lucky to get my hands on the correct front and rear fog lights in America, 2 full sets of Jeep wheels (one set I found in Italy) and a pair of half doors all at fair prices. But, as I say, luck, contacts and charm go a long way!

Have you encountered any problems during the build phase thus far? How did you overcome them?

As I mentioned – the blown engine has put a big hold on things moving forward. I'm really looking forward to having jp18 back on the road in the coming weeks and then planning for the respray!

What is your key piece of advice for anyone looking to join the Jurassic Park Motor pool and get involved? How would you start off?

I think with any project, do your homework first! Research all you can, not only about the base car, but also the parts you’ll need to make it into your choice of movie car. Research the costs and challenges of running and maintaining your Jeep too; they’re all old cars now so need some TLC!

Keep in mind as much as we love these vehicles the costs can spiral very very quickly. Also, think about what you want to do with it once built; shows are fun but ultimately do it for your own enjoyment and build the vehicle for yourself. The Jurassic park motor pool is a fantastic resource for information and friendship from all over the globe.

South America is a distant dream for me, far away from India, a land of remarkable alpines, dense forests, multihued cities, and of course Machu Picchu in Peru. Rann of Kutch in Gujarat reminds me of my dream trip to the salt flats of Bolivia. A diverse continent with various countries of different natural marvels, there are some amazing places to see in South America. So, here is my South America bucket list with all the breathtaking places to visit in South America.

1. See the Amazon Rainforest

Flying into Leticia, Colombia I watched in awe the sea of green trees below me seem to go on forever. We hired a local to take us by boat 2 hours up the Amazon river to an untouched portion of the rainforest far from town. I traveled during the rainy season which gave my Amazon experience the added bonus of canoeing through the rainforest canopy.

Five hours of canoe-ing through dense vegetation. Macaws, howler monkeys, iguanas, squirrel monkeys, and an array of other wildlife just 10 feet above our heads. Our guide, Armando, hacking our path through the jungle with a long machete. The experience was surreal. Just the three of us completely immersed in the rainforest. The deafening sounds of insects and animal calls never stopped. We slept deep in the rainforest on a hammock constructed on a floating platform in the middle of a lake. Our nighttime search of Caiman, candlelight dinner on the floor of our floating platform and early morning canoe around the lake were highlights of our two days in the jungle. We got to know about the jungle. A bucket-list adventure that I didn’t even know I had. To sleep in the jungle and experience the serenity and peacefulness of nature around me. Visiting the Amazon Rainforest will forever be high in my list of travel adventures.

2. Trek for Machu Picchu

So many other travelers warned me that Machu Picchu was “too touristy” and too busy with people. While all of these warnings may have lowered my expectations, upon arriving I was actually blown away by just how extraordinary Machu Picchu was.

Machu Picchu is one of the best places to visit in South America!

Yes, there were many tourists there but that didn’t make the incredible feat of building a village on the side of a mountain out of stone any less incredible. The workmanship of the Incas is astounding and to this date, Machu Picchu is still one of the most magnificent things I’ve ever seen!

3. Islas Ballestas

Islas Ballestas is also called the poor man’s Galapagos, but don’t think it is, therefore, less interesting. The group of islands before the coast of Peru just south of Lima has an incredibly rich biodiversity with a variety of birds and marine wildlife. It’s a biologists dream and a paradise for those that love nature and animals.

Islas Ballestas is easy to reach with daily boat tours from Paracas, only 4 hours away from Lima. It’s almost sure you get to see the sea lions that like to spend their day sleeping at the rocky islands. Pelicans are another guaranteed sight and if you are lucky you may see penguins, dolphins or flamingos. From August to October, you might even see humpback whales.

The sea may be rough but it all adds up to the adventure that does not stop at the islands. Paracas is surrounded by stunning desert landscapes. The nearby Paracas Natural Reserve and the small town of Huacachina with its sand dunes offer much more beauty and adventure in Peru.

4. Visiting the floating villages on Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is located at the border between Peru and Bolivia at an elevation of over 3,800 meters above sea level and is the highest navigable body of water in the world. Until today, around 5,000 people live on artificial islands that float on the surface of Lake Titicaca. The Uros People have built their own islands with totora reeds for centuries and still do so today.

The floating villages can be visited from both the Peruvian and the Bolivian side of the lake. Most visitors visit the islands on short day trips which include a short-stop on several of the islands and a few explanations of the fascinating everyday life of the Uros People. However, if you want to learn more about life on Lake Titicaca, you can also organize a homestay at one of the islands with one or more overnight stays. We spent two days at one of the islands in Bolivia, one of the safest countries in South America. On day one, we went on a boat trip where we learned how the islands are constructed and how to cut the totora. We also learned about the fishing and cooking techniques of the Uros People. Our trip to the Uros island was definitely one of our most amazing experiences in South America.

5. Rainbow Mountain

Located just a few hours outside of Cusco, it’s hard to believe that Rainbow Mountain was only discovered to tourism a few years ago. But now the secret’s out, Peru’s colorful summit is fast becoming one of South America’s most popular attractions – and it’s easy to see why.

At first glance, you’d think the photos were photo-shopped but, believe it or not, those multi-colored peaks are for real.

Guided hikes are the best way to experience Rainbow Mountain and the views along the ascent are just as breath-taking. You’ll pass through vast valleys dotted with friendly alpacas, snow-capped mountains, and even giant glaciers before you start to see the colors of the rocks transform before your eyes. Standing at the summit and seeing Rainbow Mountain in all its colorful glory is an absolute “bucket-list” essential and something you’ll never forget!

6. Colca Canyon

Colca Canyon should be on every South America bucket list. The canyon is the second deepest in the world and a unique place to spot the Andean Condor, one of the largest birds in the world. You could go on a day trip or do a two- or three-days hiking tour of Colca Canyon. All the options take you to Cruz del Condor viewpoint which is the place you are most likely to see condors hunting in the morning.

The hiking tours take you down to the bottom of the canyon where vegetation is lush and green with an abundance of fruit trees. You will stay one or two nights at the bottom of the canyon before the final day of hiking takes you straight up to the top in only a few hours. Be prepared, it is a hard hike but totally worth the experience.

7. Flying over the Nazca Lines

In the midst of arid Nazca Desert in Peru, a series of giant carvings have been puzzling scientists and archaeologists for decades. These geoglyphs are the Nazca Lines – figures of humans, animals, birds, trees, flowers and other objects with mysterious origins.

It is believed that the lines were sculpted in the desert by the Nazca people around two thousand years ago. But the big mystery is their purpose. Theories have been suggested, but nobody knows for certain why these breathtaking carvings were created in the first place.

From a small airport just outside Nazca city, you can take a short flight to see the most famous of the carved figures from above, such as the monkey, the hummingbird, and the astronaut. You need to arrive early and be prepared to wait for a while before taking to the air, but it’s worth the effort to see one of the world’s greatest creative mysteries.

8. Wine tasting

When it comes to wine tasting, Chile’s wine regions rank right up there with those of France, Italy, and California. Though it’s one of the youngest wine regions in the world (rising to popularity in just the past thirty years), it’s already one of the most sought after and is known the world over for its chardonnays, it’s Sauvignon Blancs, and its cabernet sauvignons.

When in South America, sampling your fair share of Chile’s wines is a fun and eye-opening experience. You can go for full, formal tastings, tour the wineries, or book a guided tour on a “wine bus” to sample many of the area’s products.

9. The Atacama Desert

In my bio, it says “go to space one day” which I’m not sure I’ll manage unless I win the lottery. That’s why the Atacama Desert in Chile is one of my favorite places on earth. It’s so alien! Moon landscapes, mars landscapes, surreal lagoons with salt flats and blue skies with pinkish volcano’s lining up. The geysers and rainbow mountains make the landscape complete. All this at an altitude of 4000 meters and up reaching towards space.

10. Easter Island

It may be difficult and expensive to get to Easter Island: a five and a half hour flight from the Chilean Capital of Santiago, or four hours from Tahiti. Either way, Easter Island is a magical place that deserves a spot on your South America bucket list, even though it is in the middle of the Pacific.

Easter Island is home to over 400 moai head statues that are mysteriously scattered throughout the island, earning Easter Island a spot as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss these important things to see on Easter Island: the Rano Raraku birthplace quarry, Ahu Tahai, and Ahu Tongariki statue platforms, Anakena Beach, and the dormant Rano Kau volcano.

My favorite is the humble Anthropological Easter Island Museum, where you can learn more about the almost mythical Rapa Nui culture. It also houses many interesting objects, such as the only female moai on the island, a surviving moai eyeball, and several other important Rapa Nui artifacts.

11. Torres del Paine Aka W Trek

In the southernmost part of Chile, in South America’s famed Patagonia region, lies one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world – Torres del Paine National Park. Filled with some of the most stunning turquoise lakes, jagged peaks, and sweeping landscapes, Torres del Paine is easily worth the long journey to get there.

After visiting Torres del Paine on two separate occasions, I’d highly recommend doing a multi-day trek to explore the various mountains, glaciers, and rock formations in the park. The most famous of these multi-day hikes is the 5-day W Trek in Torres del Paine. Taking adventurous hikers to some of the most iconic spots in the park, like the Mirador Base de las Torres and Glacier Grey, the W Trek in Torres del Paine is achievable even for hikers who have never done a multi-day trek before.

12. Grey Glacier

Grey Glacier is one of the most spectacular sights in the Torres del Paine national park, located in Southern Chile’s Patagonia. It is one of the smallest glaciers in the Southern Patagonian impressive ice field. But with its unique grey-blue color and breathtaking mountain backdrop, there is no doubt that Grey Glacier belongs on your South America bucket list. The blue color is so intense it can be seen from space.

There are a few different ways you can experience the beauty of the glacier. You can access it as part of the famous W and O treks, by taking a boat or a kayak across Lago Grey, and finally by ice trekking the glacier! The boat tour will treat you to the most gorgeous vistas of the sparkling blue glacier, with towering snow-capped mountains in the background. If you get lucky enough to visit the park on a bright sunny day and catch a reflection of the glacier in the lake, you will experience one of the most beautiful panoramas in South America.

Ecuador

13. The Galapagos Islands

A trip to the Galapagos Islands is one of those rare dream trips that transports you into a natural universe, a world where wildlife rules and the scenery is awe-inspiring. From strange moon-like islands to the lushness of the highlands of Santa Cruz, the Galapagos offers a vast range of terrain and is one of the few remaining unspoiled regions of the world. This breathtaking volcanic archipelago is so remote it harbors animal and plant species found nowhere else in the world.

Sitting approximately 1,000 km off the Ecuadorian coast, the islands were visited by Charles Darwin in 1835, and have developed an almost mythical fascination for adventurous travelers. While the easiest way to explore is with a Galapagos cruise, island hopping is also possible – and can be more budget-friendly – though independent travelers are more limited in where they can go. Activities include hiking, paddle boarding, kayaking, and snorkeling, and you may be accompanied by curious animals both in the water and on the ground.

14. Cycling down the Andes

One of the highlights of South America for me was cycling down the Andes along the Route of the Waterfalls from Banos to Puyo in Ecuador. The route starts in Banos, a small town dramatically perched on the edge of a deep ravine in the shadow of a towering active volcano. There are several places in town to rent a bicycle. The nice thing about this day trip is that most of the cycling is downhill!

Along the route, you will pass waterfalls gushing down the cliffs beside you and even trickling over the road in front of you. Stop off at the Devil’s Cauldron – dramatic waterfalls plunging down a steep cliff that you can reach via a series of wooden steps and walkways. With millions of droplets of water glistening in the sunshine, this is a delightful stop.

You can end your trip here and flag a passing truck to take you and your bike back up to Banos, or continue further downhill. The scenery gradually changes and the cool alpine air becomes thick and steamy as you reach the Amazon rainforest. In Puyo, there are trucks or buses to take you back to Banos, where you can soak in the hot springs that give it its name – a perfect end to the day.

15. Quilotoa Lake

Up in the mountains of the Ecuadorian Andes is a hidden gem called the Quilotoa Lake, or Laguna Quilotoa in Spanish. You might be wondering what a lake is doing at over 3900m (~12800ft) above sea level. A long long time ago, this was a volcano and an immense eruption (VE I-6) occurred, causing this 3km (2-mile) wide caldera to form. Nowadays, it is a crater lake. The colors are beautiful due to the minerals that are dissolved in the water. The whole lake takes about 6-hours to circle and there are many insane viewpoints along the way.

If you enjoy the beautiful scenery along with a great hike, this is a place you have to visit. Keep in mind that weather is a little erratic when you are in this altitude, so just pack accordingly!!

Argentina

16. Fitz Roy

The Fitz Roy in Argentinian Patagonia is easily the most famous mountain on the Argentina side of the region. It’s is so iconic, it’s featured on the Patagonia clothing label. Though the particularly adventurous can rock climb it, one can reach the base as a day hike from the town of El Chaltén.

The hike will take most of the day and is moderate until the final hour, which is a steep and narrow climb up rocks. Once you reach the top you’ll be rewarded with the amazing view and the greenish blue glacial lake. There are often condors up top as well, circling the peaks. It’s a must-do in Patagonia!

17. El Chalten

The small town of El Chalten is a three-hour drive north of El Calafate in Patagonia, Argentina. The friendly town is nestled in a valley within the majestic Los Glaciares National Park by the Las Vueltas River. It is surrounded by towering rocky peaks including the iconic Cerro Torre and the Fitzroy Massif.

There are numerous walks to suit all ages and abilities which are easily accessible on foot from the town center. Each walk provides diverse flora and fauna and breathtaking views plus the paths are well maintained with good signage. Don’t miss the opportunity to hike to beautiful Laguna Capri or the stunning Laguna Torre. We hiked every day during our stay in El Chalten and I would recommend it for anyone’s South America bucket list.

18. Perito Moreno

Perito Moreno glacier is a South America bucket list item if you are into nature. Located in Los Glaciares National Park near El Calafate in Argentina, Perito Moreno is an advancing glacier and one of the 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

There are many ways to visit Perito Moreno Glacier regardless of the type of traveler you are. If you are adventurous and physically fit, you can trek on the glacier with activities such as Big Ice or mini trekking. You can also join a kayaking tour to see the glacier. If you prefer more leisurely activities, then consider either taking a boat tour to see the glacier or visit the viewing platform. Perito Moreno is truly a natural wonder and something not to be missed when you visit South America.

19. Learn to Tango

Many things may represent the country of Argentina, from gauchos to Malbec, but nothing represents the city of Buenos Aires more than Tango. So naturally, one of the top things to do in Buenos Aires to experience this passionate dance. One of the most popular ways is to visit one of the best Tango shows in Buenos Aires, and there are many.

They often include dinner and wine to enjoy while you watch the performance. If you want a less produced and more authentic, local experience, then visit a milonga. In the milonga dance halls, you’ll see locals dance and may even get asked to dance yourself. Whether you go to an elaborately produced show and dance the night away in a milonga, you’ll fall in love with Tango in Buenos Aires.

20. Tierra del Fuego

Tierra del Fuego is known in Argentina as “Fin del Mundo” – the end of the world. The reference to the end of the world is literal: Tierra del Fuego is truly located at one end of the world, close to Antartica. But upon visiting, one realizes that there’s more than just geography in this expression. Tierra del Fuego is a unique place, in fact out of this world and not just at the end of it.

Part of the greater Patagonia, with its capital Ushuaia Tierra del Fuego is a magic land – one of the oceans, forests, mountains, and glaciers. There are many things to do in Ushuaia. Most people visit to navigate the Beagle Channel, a perfect place to admire wildlife such as whales, sea lions and two species of penguins. Another highlight is Tierra del Fuego National Park with its many hiking trails.

But there is more: Laguna Esmeralda and Laguna Turquesa are two beautiful glacier lakes that can be reached on fairly easy hikes. The trails start at around 17 km from Ushuaia. Lago Escondido is another fantastic place for an easy hike and – provided the weather allows it – kayaking.

When in Tierra del Fuego, make sure to get a taste of the local specialties: centollas (king crab) abound in the region and several restaurants serve it; asado fuengino is a mixed grill but it guests all have to eat from the same cutting board, and it thus becomes a real social experience.

21. Ushuaia

The town of Ushuaia in southern Argentina is the southernmost town on earth. The town really exploits that moniker. There are many places in Ushuaia that use that name; southernmost hotel, restaurant, museum, train and more. Although its geographic location is the draw, there are lots of things to do and see in Ushuaia.

The Tierra del Fuego National Park with its little train is stunning. There is an old prison turned into a museum and art exhibit and interesting architecture incongruously reminiscent of a Swiss village. As a major port on the cruise route, Ushuaia gets a lot of visitors from all over the world.

22. Serranía de Hornocal, Jujuy

Serranía de Hornocal, or just El Hornocal, is a beautiful mountain range located in Argentinas northern corner, in the province of Jujuy. It’s also known as the mountain of 14 colors. Just by looking at a photo of the mountain range, it’s easy to understand why. The mountain is covered with lines of colors in all kinds of shades, the most dominant being shades of red, green, yellow and orange. While El Hornocals top is at 4761 meters altitude, the best view of the mountain range is at 4600 meters altitude across the gorge from El Hornocal. From the viewpoints parking lot, you can hike down to see El Hornocal from different angles.

The province of Jujuy is still not too frequented by tourists, it lies a bit out of the way for most travelers. Still, it has a lot of beautiful and interesting sceneries and history, El Hornocal being just one of the highlights.

23. Iguazu Falls, Brazil & Argentina

The waterfalls at Iguazu will completely blow you away. They are the most spectacular waterfalls in the world, easily beating out Victoria and Niagara. Even Eleanor Roosevelt herself famously uttered the words “poor Niagara” when she saw Iguazu.

It’s really worth taking two days to visit both the Brazilian side and the Argentine side if you can, as they each offer different experiences. Most of the falls are on the Argentine side of the border. This means that, from the Brazil side, you have spectacular panoramic views of the falls from across the river.

On the Argentine side, you really have the chance to get up close and personal with the falls and experience all their might and power. The Garganta del Diablo is the deepest and highest of the falls and is a highlight for many visitors.

Brazil

24. Carnival in Rio

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro in Portuguese) is definitely one of those bucket list experiences and it was certainly on mine. It is without a doubt one of the biggest carnivals in the world with a crazy amount of people out on the street every day of the carnival. Think more than 1 million people out on the streets each and every day for the 5-day festival.

Occurring before Lent each year the carnival has amazing organized parades in the Sambadrone, which was one of the most ostentatious displays my husband and I have ever seen. Street parties, known as Blocos are also crazy in their own right and definitely worth a look. Even, as a couple traveling Brazil, we enjoyed Carnival but as a young 20 something single, I am sure Carnival would be a whole different experience.

25. Christ the Redeemer

There are few places in the world more beautiful than Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and to add to its many charms, Rio is also home to one of the new Seven Wonders of the World – the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue.

Standing tall, at nearly 100 feet high, the statue of Christ keeps a watch over the city of Rio de Janeiro from the summit of Corcovado Mountain. The easiest way to travel up to the statue is by funicular but there are also hiking trails up the mountain, for those seeking a bit more adventure.

Be prepared for some serious crowds at the top but the 360-degree views more than makeup for it. You can see the whole city from here, including Rio’s iconic beaches, Sugar Loaf Mountain, and the colorful mountainside favelas.

Colombia

26. Cartagena Old Town

Cartagena, Colombia is one of the most popular cities to visit in South America, and with good reason. With its colorful buildings, lively atmosphere and unique blend of cultures, the colonial city is a memorable experience. The central part of Cartagena is referred to as Old Town or the walled city. Surrounded by a wall built hundreds of years ago as a way to protect Cartagena from invaders, Old Town Cartagena is the most vibrant, albeit most touristy, part of the city.

Roaming the streets of Old Town is an experience for the senses. The intoxicating smell of street food and the clamor of vendors selling their goods fills the hot, humid air. It’s easy to spend hours simply strolling through the streets admiring the rainbow of buildings with their brightly painted doors. Grab a gelato or ice cream and relax under the trees in one of the plazas in Old Town or splurge and stay the night in one of the Casas inside the walled city. These charming, boutique hotels are housed in buildings that are 200 years old. With only a handful of rooms and a small rooftop pool to hp guests escape the heat, they are perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway or even families visiting Cartagena with kids.

27. Medellin

Medellin Colombia should be on your South America bucket list. Known as the City of Eternal Spring due to the pleasant climate, with temperatures averaging around 25 C year round. Medellin is a popular location for digital nomads. I visited for a week during December and loved this beautiful city surrounded by the Andes Mountains.

Traveling to Medellin alone I found the city easy to get around via the excellent metro system along with the metrocable (urban cable cars) which are included in the price of the metro ticket. Colombians are friendly, and you can get by with a minimum of Spanish language skills. Two of the big events that draw visitors to Medellin are the Festival of Flowers in August and Alumbrados – the incredible Christmas light display on the Medellin River. Be sure to put Medellin Colombia on your bucket list!

28. San Cipriano (Natural Reserve)

One place that should be on your bucket list for South America is San Cipriano. A natural jungle experience just a few hours from Cali, Colombia. How does the sight of the world’s most crystalline waters sound? Or, if that’s not enough for you, what about bathing under a waterfall in a secluded location with next to nobody around.

The waterfall, named, La Ventiadora, is hidden within the San Cipriano Natural Reserve. Once inside the reserve, you can hire a local guide inside to take you to this hidden spot. This waterfall is one of the attractions outside of the usual Colombia guide books that many tourists have not yet had the chance to visit.

29. Cocora Valley

Vast greenery, rolling hills, and wax palm trees so tall, that they seem to reach the edge of the sky. This is Cocora Valley, a hidden gem in the mountains of Colombia.

Cocora Valley is an adventurer’s treasure and a traveler’s paradise. Its simple beauty and natural scenery are some of the reasons as to why it is on top of my recommended South America destinations. It sits in Salento, a prominent coffee region in Colombia. There are many hiking paths that take you onto routes not visited by others. Here, you can truly escape from urban pollution and the hectic chatters of city life.

Bolivia

30. Uyuni Salt Flats

No South America bucket list is complete without a tour through the stunning salt flats outside Uyuni, Bolivia. This classic road trip takes you through surreal landscapes that look like they are from another planet. The star attraction here is the expansive Uyuni salt flats, a giant flat sea of salt that stretches as far as the eye can see, creating an optical illusion that lets photographers play with perspective. In fact, taking creative photos of yourself getting “eaten” by a toy dinosaur or popping out of Pringles can is undeniably part of the appeal.

But, aside from the photo opportunities, a tour of the Uyuni salt flats is a not-to-be-missed adventure that will bring you face to face with some of the most incredible landscapes on this planet.

Oh, and here’s a pro tip for you: book your multi-day salt flats excursion one-way instead of round-trip, and plan it so that you end your adventure in Chile’s Atacama desert, another great entry for your South America bucket list!

31. Angel Falls, Venezuela

Angel Falls in Venezuela is one of those bucket list places that sadly, most people will never get to visit. Venezuela is one of the most dangerous countries in the world, and it is not recommended to travel there at the moment. I was lucky to visit in 2016 and was wowed by the incredible nature in Canaima National Park, where you will find Angel Falls, the highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world.

Getting to Angel Falls is only possible with an organized tour, as it involves a flight to Canaima National Park, then a journey in a motorized canoe along the river. We finally caught our first glimpse of Angel Falls, tumbling down one of the tepuy flat-topped mountains, as we made our way along the river to our camp. Across the river, Angel Falls towered over us, still mesmerizing even in the dry season. We spent the night here, then hiked the last hour to Angel Falls the following morning, where we bathed in a pool close to the base of the falls. Swimming in Angel Falls is certainly a bucket list moment I will never forget!

32. Cruising on the Amazon river

Taking a cruise down the Amazon River is one of the best things to do in South America for those interested in wildlife and nature. As the world’s largest tropical rainforest, the Amazon is famous for its biodiversity of plants and wildlife. Spreading across 9 countries in South America, there are many options for experiencing the Amazon. Ecuador is a great choice given its eco-friendly lodges and affordable cruises down the Amazon river.

As one of the most bio-diverse places on the planet, taking a river cruise through the Ecuador Amazon is a great way to see the incredible flora, fauna, and wildlife. During my cruise down the river, we spotted 6 species of monkeys, anacondas, crocodiles, river dolphins, macaws, toucans, and sloths! Cruising down the Amazon river is an experience I’ll never forget and should be on everyone’s South America Bucket List.
