Scientists solve the ‘Holy Grail’ of paleontology.
Imagine giant apes, towering at three meters tall and weighing a massive 550 pounds, wandering the karst plains of southern China! These giants, the largest primate to ever walk the Earth, known as Gigantopithcus blacki, were very distant human ancestors who left behind a legacy of around 2000 fossilized teeth and four jawbones. So why would such an awesome creature vanish from the Earth?
The study published in Nature, led by a dedicated team of Chinese, Australian, and US researchers, has finally unraveled the mystery of these magnificent beings. Their research indicates that Gigantopithcus blacki went extinct between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago, succumbing to the inability to adapt their food preferences and behaviors in the face of changing climates.
"The story of G. blacki is an enigma in paleontology," says Professor Yingqi Zhang.
But now that enigma has been solved.

†Gigantopithecus blacki
Art credit: Orribec
Gigantopithecus is an extinct species famous as the largest ape ever known. However, not that much is known about it, since it’s only known from jaw and tooth fossils, so its appearance is largely speculative. What is known is that it lived in Chinese tropical forests from 2 million to 300,000 years ago, and ate plants, fruits, seeds, and probably small animals. It is estimated to have weighed anywhere from 440-660lbs (200-300kg), potentially much larger than gorillas. However size estimates are difficult with so few remains, and given the size sexual dimorphism present in many modern apes, there was probably a variety of different sizes between individuals.

Was messing around with photoshop brushes and had a fun idea of a side scrolling adventure game in a sort of cave painting style with various prehistoric creatures as the boss fights, I think that’d be fun.  (Fun lil detail, the back drop for this is a picture of the other side of my fossil of a shrimp)

Paleovember 2022, Gigantopithecus!
The only remains we have of this mysterious ape are it’s lower jaw and a few teeth, but that hasn’t stopped people from estimating its proportions to outrageous degrees. Currently, Gigantopithecus is understood to be a relative of modern orangutans that, instead of swinging through trees, more likely roamed on the ground like a gorilla.

I’ve noticed my old picture of a bearded gigantopithecus has been making the rounds again so I’ve decided to post the newer version of him with the  more gorilla style scruff instead of the full on biker beard.

Cursed mythical creatures no.1: The Yeti
So you know how we used to reconstruct Gigantopithecus as an upright biped, which led to it being used as an explanation for the likes of the yeti and bigfoot. Nowadays, though, Gigantopithecus is reconstructed as basically an orange gorilla with the face of an orangutan. But that got me wondering...
What if the yeti actually was a gigantopithecus?
Tumblr media
So here it is, my Yeti, in all its knuckle walking glory. I'm really proud of them, especially the male with his magnificent beard. My favourite thing about him is the falanges which form little horn like structures on top of his head, as a nod to several pop culture yeti interpretations.
Hope you guys like it! I might make cursed mythical creatures into a series if I have more ideas. Thanks, and hope you have a good day.

The largest primate to walk the earth went extinct between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago, unable to adapt its food preferences and behaviors, and vulnerable to the changing climates which sealed its fate.
Orangutans are a close relative of G. blacki. Orangutans adapted their size, behavior and habitat preferences as conditions changed. The Giant primates were to specialized to survive climactic changes.
China from about 2.0 million years until the late middle Pleistocene when it became extinct. It lived during the Early to Middle Pleistocene. The cause of the disappearance of G. blacki remains unresolved but could shed light on primate resilience and the fate of megafauna in this region.

Kong Defends His Bride
Tumblr media
Having just acquired his sacrificial bride, the mighty Kong must now defend her from the predators of his island domain, not least of which is the terrible giant land crocodile!
This is of course my adaptation of the scene from the classic movie in which King Kong wrestles a tyrannosaur. As much as I love the dinosaurs in both the original movie and the 2005 remake, I always did feel that Kong appeared less impressive compared to them, being simply a giant version of a modern animal. Therefore, I decided to make Kong’s nemesis a giant relative of the extinct terrestrial crocodilian Quinkana, which prowled Australia until around 10,000 years ago.
