Americans want gun control.  :: May 1, 2023

         Americans mourn for the victims of the weekend gun violence in Texas and the Texans forced to live in a society that glorifies guns above public safety. The details of two shootings over the weekend are horrifying. In the first, neighbors asked a man shooting an assault rifle in his front yard at 11:00 PM to stop because he was waking sleeping infants in the neighbors’ home. The man with the assault rifle then executed five of the neighbors in their home—including an eight-year-old boy. The gunman remains at large. Governor Abbott said nothing for 24 hours (other than releasing a photo of his golden retriever). When he finally commented, he tried to diminish the horror of the executions by describing the victims as “illegal immigrants.” See Business Insider, Gov.          In a second killing, a man on a date was scammed out of $40 by someone pretending to be a parking valet. When the man learned he had been scammed, he shot and killed the scammer, then returned to the restaurant to finish his dinner with his date. He has been arrested.
         When everyone is armed, the temptation to solve every disagreement by resorting to arms is overwhelming. The killings are sickening, and the lawless situation is dispiriting. But . . . there is reason to hope. All Americans are tired of the senseless killings that are the inevitable result of an armed populace. Fox News conducted a poll that confirms that a majority of Americans—including Republicans—now favor enhanced regulations of firearms. See Mom’s Demand Action, New Fox News Polling Confirms Popularity of Gun Safety Laws Among Democrats, Republicans, and Gun Owners.
         Moms Demand Action summarizes the key points of the Fox polls as follows:
87% of Americans support requiring criminal background checks on all gun buyers, including 83% support from gun-owning households.
81% of Americans support improving enforcement of existing gun laws.
81% of Americans support raising the legal age to buy a gun to 21, including 76% of gun-owning households.
80% of Americans support allowing police to take guns from those considered a danger to themselves or others, also known as Red Flag laws, including 76% of gun-owning households.
61% of Americans support banning assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons, including 50% support from gun-owning households.
         But Republican legislatures are not able to restrain themselves. They are captives of the NRA and the minority of Americans who value guns above all else. The Fox poll suggests that Republicans are vulnerable on a core issue going into 2024. They have picked the wrong side on guns and reproductive liberty. And the economy.
         The fact that Republicans seem hell-bent on creating the worst platform possible for 2024 does nothing to reduce the sting and sorrow of the latest mass shootings. But there is a path forward for Democrats as Americans come to understand the dark future that Republicans are plotting.

“You Can Have Fun Too” poster, created by Mick Hicks for SFAF, 1984
"In 1984, Rick Crane, director of the (San Francisco AIDS Foundation) at the time, hired famed local photographer Mick Hicks to photograph two men for a safe-sex poster to be put in the city’s gay bars, baths, and other locations. Hicks worked for virtually all the LGBTQ newspapers in the Bay Area and had spent a year and a half photographing people with AIDS, chronicling their struggle with the disease. He quickly accepted the commission.
At the same time, a young Black man named Robert Gray, a native San Franciscan raised in the Bayview Hunter’s Point area of the city, and a proud sixth-generation descendant of the Georgetown 272 (a group of 272 African slaves who were sold, in 1838 by the Jesuit priests who ran George University to keep the school afloat), was rather well known in the Castro and Tenderloin areas. “I had started meeting and dating guys in my junior year in high school,” he told me. “I went to high school four or five blocks from the Castro. I would find my way up through the bar scene during that time, sneaking into gay bars and discos.” Of course, he realized that AIDS was rampant through the city.
One day, as 24-year-old Robert wandered down Castro Street, a man approached him and asked if he would pose for a photo for a safe-sex poster for San Francisco AIDS Foundation. “The gentleman advised me that a young photographer named Mick Hicks was looking for two subjects, one Black male and one white male, for the poster. Having seen so many of my personal friends succumb to this deadly virus, I felt it was something I needed to do to help stop the spread of this horrific disease. I asked myself, ‘Why not?’ With AIDS affecting so many of my gay brothers and sisters, I felt it was my responsibility to do something to contribute to AIDS awareness and prevention. I needed to take action, whatever I could do to be a voice of action and help my community.” He agreed on the spot to do the poster.

“You Can Have Fun (and be safe too)” read the final poster. The image that Hicks created featured Robert, shot from the back, embracing a white model (Hicks’ partner Nick Cuccia), his white arm and bubble-butt standing out prominently against Robert’s skin. Even the Chronicle columnist Herb Caen took notice of the photo. The sex-positive message of the poster advocated “mutual masturbation,” “erotic massage,” “imagination and fantasies,” and “limiting social drugs.” The poster portrayed and promoted gay sex as normal, expected behavior, and emphasized the pleasure that could be had while still protecting oneself against transmission of the virus. The poster caused a huge sensation and started appearing in gay bars, discos, and bathhouses from San Francisco to New York. Mr. Gray told me, “As the young kids would say today, ‘it went viral,’ no pun intended!”

Regrettably, the poster also launched a two-pronged backlash, one prong based in religious prudery, the other in racism.
By asserting that gay sex could be both fun and safe, the poster was the first to portray gay sex as normal, healthy, and fun. Even before AIDS, gay sex had been viewed as aberrant, “unnatural.” As an offshoot of that prejudice, AIDS was thought by many as a visitation of the wrath of God on immoral men who were violating God’s law. How many times did we hear in the early 1980s, “At least AIDS is killing all the right people”? The poster’s sex-positive message was condemned as an affront to decency and family values.
Even more lamentably, the poster inadvertently shone a light on the racial animus within San Francisco’s gay community. As Rick Crane told the Bay Area Reporter in 2014, “Gays as a group were considered second-class citizens and, ironically, gays themselves were treating gay blacks the same way — as second-class citizens.” Although racial tensions had eased somewhat from the flashpoints of the ‘60s and ‘70s, there was still a clear racial divide in the bars in the Castro. The Pendulum was the Castro’s only gay bar where black men and white men went comfortably to meet; the other Castro bars catered primarily to whites. The Trap, located in the Tenderloin district, also catered to interracial couples. Thus, some of the bars and other establishments refused to display the poster, deeming it “unacceptable.” Regarding the response to the poster, Gray said, “I would go into bars, and I would hear the chatter amongst people about the poster. I heard some really positive things, but also some really negative, racially motivated things.

“At the time that I did the poster,” he continued, “I had no idea that it would be so controversial. Honestly, had I known this upfront, I might not have done it. But looking back on it now, I would do it again because it was the right thing to do.” But still, he laments, “Who would have thought that a photo would open my eyes to the racism within the gay community? We are so much more alike as a people than different. One would think we could get along better and come together for a cause greater than us individually. Being a proud Black gay man, I must fight harder than most for myself and for those who come after me.”
These days, Robert Gray is still that proud Black gay man who changed the face of safe-sex advocacy. Sixty-two years old now, nearly forty years since he posed for the SFAF poster, he is semi-retired and lives in Vallejo, California. He is now a widower, having lost his partner of 42 years (his husband since 2013). He remains quite proud of the poster to this day, even if that pride is somewhat tempered by what he considers a lack of recognition for his work. “I thought over time I would see the poster in the gay pride parades or that I would be given some special honor from major players in the movement, like GLAAD. There is still a lot of racism in the gay community.”

Haurchefant Week 2023
Day One: Imagine 1270 Words - Rated T for Drunkenness & Pining (but it's pretty wholesome) They stagger home near sundown, a pair of newborn deer trotting through the darkened streets of Ishgard, their breath smelling of mulled wine.
Fortunately, the foyer of Fortemps Manor is empty when they arrive. The house’s occupants have long since retired to bed, and there are none present to pass judgment upon Haurchefant as he hauls the Warrior of Light down the corridor, singing a drinking song under his breath – or at least, the single verse he can remember of it, repeatedly.
Aramond mumbles something unintelligible, then scoffs and snickers to himself, resting his forehead against one of Haurchefant’s pauldrons. The sound is catching. By the time they reach Aramond’s chambers, Haurchefant is also giggling like a schoolboy.
“Shh.” The Warrior of Light bids him be silent with an air of utmost earnestness, which redoubles Haurchefant’s laughter.
They spill into Aramond’s room. Haurchefant unslings the other man’s arms from his shoulders, pouring him into the bed. It has been stripped bare, he notices, of most of the covers. The duvet lies in a heap on the floor, along with several pillows, leaving Eorzea’s champion with naught but a drafty sheet and a solitary place to rest his head. He does this with enthusiasm, burrowing his face into the cushion.
“Hold,” Haurchefant says, straightening himself as he wrestles back his laughter. “That will not do, unless you aim to suffocate in your sleep.”
“Mmhm,” Aramond replies, his voice muffled. Sighing, Haurchefant grabs him by the shoulder and rolls him onto his back with a concentrated effort.
Aramond reaches up and curls his fingers over Haurchefant’s forearm, pulling him closer. It takes Haurchefant a moment to realize that the other man is merely using him for leverage as he settles back down onto the mattress, making himself comfortable. The realization does nothing to dislodge his pounding heart from his throat.
“It is stifling hot in here,” he remarks, reaching for his gorget.
It is the truth. Although the Warrior of Light keeps the curtains tightly drawn to block out the sun, the space is hot as a furnace and heady with the scent of incense. It is the same scent that clings to the man’s robes: crushed herbs and resin. Haurchefant unclasps his gorget and removes it, letting the humid air cool his neck as much as it can.
“Helps me think,” Aramond mutters, peering up at him.
A fond smile tugs at Haurchefant’s lips. “And the complete absence of light? Is that also to aid you in your contemplations?”
“I see better in the dark,” Aramond retorts, giving him a rare smirk.
“That, my friend,” Haurchefant replies, not unkindly. “Is ridiculous.”
“If the dark and heat are not to your liking, feel free to retire to your own chambers, ser knight,” his companion grouses, tearing off one of his gloves.
Haurchefant says nothing, his protests snuffed like a candle. For he does not wish to retire to his own chambers so long as he is welcome here.
His eyes follow the arc of Aramond’s hand as it ungloves the other, noting the ink stains on his skin. His only callous hugs his right middle finger, formed by the frequent holding of a quill. How different from the roughness of Haurchefant’s palms and the pads of his fingers, smattered here and there with scars.
His head is still swimming with wine. He plants himself on the edge of the bed next to Aramond, swaying as he reaches for his own gloves. The cool air on his bare skin as he peels them off is a relief. He does not realize his eyes have drifted shut until the soft sound of Aramond clearing his throat snaps him back to attentiveness.
“Truth be told, I am still adjusting to the light and the snow,” the Warrior of Light discloses, looking past him, his hands folded on his chest. “The sun does not oft reach the Brume, and I never went further than the Foundation as a child. The climes were different then, as well. As you know.”
Haurchefant’s lips part in surprise. “You hail from Ishgard? Why have you never said anything? I offered you the drinking tour— you accepted--”
“I was hardly familiar with the local taverns before.” Aramond sounds bemused as he sits up, propping himself on his elbows. “I left when I was sixteen.”
“Still!” Haurchefant exclaims. “To think. All that time. I might’ve passed you in the street!”
Wincing, Aramond mutters, “Well. Not likely.”
He tilts his chin toward the ceiling, his expression unreadable in the dim light. Haurchefant tries and fails not to follow the column of his neck to where it disappears into the open collar of his robes.
“You would have had no cause to speak to me, if you had noticed me at all.”
The words are almost an afterthought. Aramond is still pondering the ceiling.
“I am fair certain I would have noticed you,” Haurchefant replies carefully.
Aramond lowers his gaze, meeting Haurchefant’s eyes. “I was nobody.”
“Nobody?” The knight scoffs, incredulous, shaking his head of silver hair. “You? Never. I would have seen you, just as I did at Dragonhead, and known you straight away to be a friend.”
He can see the skepticism on Aramond’s face as he lowers himself back down, sinking into the pillow. The Warrior of Light sighs lightly, closing his eyes. Then, the ghost of a smile passes over his mouth.
“I can just picture us,” he says. “A scrawny orphan from the Brume and a young squire of House Fortemps: inseparable companions… it makes for an unusual sight. Do you think we would have sparred often? Tracked mud from the Brume through the clean halls of Fortemps manor?”
Haurchefant leans forward slightly, his own grin broadening. “Without a doubt. I did that any number of times without having made your acquaintance.”
“It would have been attributed to my terrible influence, I’m sure,” Aramond muses.
“On the other hand,” Haurchefant counters, indulging in the fantasy. “I imagine we would have been at the books in father’s library far more often than I cared to be on my own, as a youngling. Knowing you.”
“I would have liked that,” the Warrior of Light laughs, his expression softening.
“As would I have,” Haurchefant confesses. His face feels pleasantly warm, and he is not altogether certain it has anything to do with the wine. “If it were with you.”
“Haurchefant.”
Something in Aramond’s voice makes Haurchefant’s heart flutter. The Warrior of Light’s eyes are still closed, his mouth still curved into a slight smile.
“I have never liked Ishgard better than I do in your company.”
Haurchefant dares to inch his hand closer to Aramond’s, where it has alighted on the bed. “Then full glad I am that we met, even if it was later than I would have liked.”
“For my part, I am glad that everything came to pass exactly as it did,” Aramond mutters, his voice growing softer, dwindling to a murmur. “If, in any other life, I had not chanced to meet you at all, then I… I…”
He trails off, leaving Haurchefant to wait on tenterhooks for his conclusion, only to realize it isn’t coming. For a moment later, the champion of the Light, the chosen of Hydaelyn, the savior of Eorzea, lets out a quiet snore and shifts in his sleep, burying his face halfway into his pillow.
Haurchefant’s shoulders slacken and he chuckles lightly, an overwhelming sense of fondness welling up in his chest at the sight. He stands, reaching for the cover, and pulls it up to Aramond’s shoulders.
“Sleep well, my friend,” he says.

Your mother had explained to you many many times that it was an honor to be the building diety. To be chosen to be built into the foundations, and tasked with watching over the building and it's inhabitants was something not a lot of people were rewarded with. Your body had been laid ceremoniously on a capstone in the basement (subbasement after the construction was completed) and a stream of friends and family had come to say their goodbyes. Then came local politicians, the city building inspector, and finally, a long conversation with the architect himself. How he felt about the building, his hopes for it, what kind of environment he pictured it to have. You had already been told he couldn't dictate to you, ultimately, it was your building and the building was you. When you had taken a final deep breath, the central pillar was lowered slowly onto your prone form and the pressure increased until your form suddenly exploded into a cloud of spores. You settled onto every surface and settled into all the cracks. A mixture of sugar water and growth medium was sprayed liberally all around, on every surface in the building as it rose into the sky. The ventilation system, once activated, drew your spores up thru the building, the bloom period. After the building was complete, all the windows and doors were shut and locked and the building was left for six months so you could "breath" for a bit. When the time came and the building was opened, your self had spread thru the building, some places thick and sturdy, In others, like a large community room on the ground floor, you swirled around near the ceiling on warm air currents. Everything was a part of you, and you controlled everything. So far, you had developed a tendency to pause the elevator on the 13th floor (because you always held your breath until you got to the 14th, and one of the bottom floor offices was always 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the building. It just felt better to you. Your bloom had given you time to think, and you went with an artistic fern pattern on the walls and something more texture than design on the ceilings. You were aware, in ways better and worse than before, of everything that occurred in your building. The people who moved in would introduce themselves to you and make offerings to the central pillar of sweetened agar and aromatic herbs. They prayed for safety and warmth, and you provided. This building was you, in every way it could be you. You were not the only bloom building on the block, and thru tendrils too fine to be noticed, you all talked amongst yourselves.

Repod Roundup: Good Omens Edition
These are part of a much longer series - a non-religious Advent calendar for each day of December by Snowfilly1 and all of them are lovely, really.
Laughter
[The Bentley] has developed quite a few non-car-like pieces of knowledge over the years. The first of which, of course, is the ability to be aware of herself as a car, and the things she can do as ‘not car-like.’
The second was an awareness of her partner. (She does not think of Crowley as an owner, nor herself as a possession. They are partners. The Bentley can’t go fast without her partner.)...
Gift
Here are some gifts Aziraphale has given Crowley:
A curving wing in the rain. Call it protection, call it safety, call it love. An act of unthinking grace: I have this thing; this is all I have; I offer it to you. Call it the thing Crowley remembers every day for 6,000 years; the thing that becomes the foundation and the building blocks and the crowning glory of his life. Call it the thing Aziraphale judges his every action against, afterwards…
In which Crowley’s informal av club ends up being slightly more revealing than he’d planned. This fic has lovely little gems of lines: “... then—with the agonizing slowness and precision of an elderly lady punching her PIN into a credit card reader— [Aziraphale] picked up the paper…” And, it has some interesting discussions of adaptations in general and adaptations of Pride and Prejudice in particular. (I’m with Crowley on this matter.)
Much more melancholy - three days before the Apocalypse, Crowley asks Aziraphale to cut his hair. It’s all warm and sweet and gentle - and mournful - with a lot about how we build identity and work through transitions. When I first made this, I found a sample of improvised piano in the rain, and it pleased me to continue the rain theme.
How short?” Aziraphale asks quietly.
“Short,” Crowley says. “Take it off.”
He runs his hand through Crowley’s long red hair, his fingers snagging in the tangles of an updo taken down carelessly. Aziraphale thinks of hair blowing in a desert wind as thunderclouds gathered on the horizon. He doesn’t remember the names of the cities the Flood washed away, or the song someone sang to their children as they all huddled on the roof of their hut, or whether he wept when the waters receded. But he remembers Crowley’s dusty hair, the braid behind his ear…
And onto some fic written by me. This originally started for a femslash exchange, and it was interesting to dig into Agnes Nutter’s POV. Fun to find a character that might get her attention, really. In this case, Constant-in-Affliction, v. modest, surprisingly daring. I ended up doing a lot on Agnes’s prescience, and what it meant to know exactly how a relationship was going to go. Sometimes I think Agnes is an analogue for Christ, in that she healed the sick and was executed in a painful way, and she left behind a book to follow. And sometimes I think she’s an analogue for god, at least the god of Good Omens. Loving something, with all that vulnerability and risk, all laid out in four-dimensions. (Also, I think I was trying to imply that by accepting the love affair, Agnes was accepting her super-prescience - that she decided to be brave. So! Constant-in-Affliction saved the world…? Eh. Not sure if that ever came through for the reader, though.)
And, always a good time to get into the kind of medicine that involves leeches and placing every herb under a guiding planet. (I had story notes!)
I wrote “Reading in Bed” first, because I wanted Aziraphale to have a good time, and then I threw in a minor detail about how the angel liked to read different translations of the same book, like different vintages of wine to savour, and then I stumbled into a scholarly treatise about two versions of Persuasion, where the key word did not have an exact cognate in the language and the different choices the translators made… and it got very thinky.

They both ended up in 2nd Person, both an exploration of each characters internal stresses and what they think of the other… I think I might have been doing a Podfic Bingo with ‘splice two fics together’ or something.
I do find it interesting that where Aziraphale sees his uncertainty as something to be worked through and triumphed over, Crowley sees the dappling of his character as something beautiful. How the comfort that Aziraphale takes for granted is something that both attracts and scares Crowley. (Am never not going to love Crowley’s elbow-knobby, surprisingly comfortable hugs.)
As a podfic this ended up fully SFXed, with the slightly anachronistic Sabre Dance/Spinning Plates Music moving through the noise of the air raid. Is Crowley gallantly fighting or is he a clown? Either way, the sweat is flying. And I do dearly love the gentle clock and blackbird song for the second half.
There’s something about femslash that often makes me go for the dark and angsty. I’m so sorry! I do write happy fics with girls in it, I promise! I just… I just have a bit of an urge to go wild.
In this case, I was filling a prompt for the Femslash Exchange - Crowley/War. And I was definitely doing a destructive kind of a romance there, but also exploring Women In Wartime - the ones sheltering behind walls to wait it out, the captives, the warriors, the beautiful casus belli. Helen is a bit of a cipher, really - there are wildly different interpretations of her from different sources, and I suppose I wanted to explore that a little.
As for the recording, I’m not sure I have much to say about it, except that voices were tricky because both Crawly and War have a bit of a drawl. I kept War’s voice a bit higher for characterisation reasons and hope I managed to keep them different enough. Also, as I recall I did a big trawl looking for ancient Greek instruments and ended up with a double-reed duduk in place of an aulos. Shrug. We do what we can.
