“May her soul rest in peace....” they’d said.

The winds howled.

“May she bless us all from above.....” they’d echoed.

A lightning crackled and struck somewhere distant.

“She was a great woman, your mother.....” they’d consoled.

The rain poured in sheets as he wandered aimlessly on a path as dark as the sky. The drops clung to his lashes.

He couldn’t see ahead. What was the point even if he could?

Hands limp in his pockets, ears clogged with the thrashing, roaring and splattering of rain against his face, feet dragging against the muddy slushy grass, head hanging heavy, so difficult to lift it up.....what was the point even he could?

And then all the air was forced out of his lungs as something banged against his wet, heaving heart. Maybe he was dying too....good....I’m coming too.....

“I'm sorry! Are you hurt?” hands fumbled and clumsily gripped his shoulders, holding him up.

Am I hurt? What’s the point even if I am?

“C’mon, mate! Hurry up! We’re waiting!”

“Okay, look,” so Draco looked, slowly raising his heavy as lead head and watching through his dripping fringe.

A nervous smile, shining cheeks, blindfolded eyes.

“It’s a dare,” those glistening smiling lips whispered. The voice clear even in the gushing rain.

How has he been smiling for so long? It’s been so long......

Then suddenly they were swaying to a clattered tune.

That bright smile widened and that face glowed under the soundless flashlights snapping in the sky. Draco’s hands were pulled from his pockets. They’d been almost stuck inside but he managed to pry it out, clasping them firmly in his own.

“We’re playing a game, you see. I need to make you smile.” Draco’s shoes and socks were sodden and clung to his feet while he was twisted and turned in the sludgy grass by strong but gentle hands. They were warm. How could they be so warm when it was raining so hard?

Draco didn’t know what was there to smile. He was just glad it was raining so that his tears couldn’t be seen.

‘Never let others see you cry, my dragon. Tears have a very high price if in the wrong hands....’

Someone was singing, a soft humming in his ears over the crashing rain. The thunder and the piercing clitter clatter of the watery needles against roofs gave the beats.

‘But then the clouds would open my dragon....’

“Dancing always makes me smile, actually. Are you smiling yet?” he asked laughing at his own question. The rich laughter rang in his ears, tinkling, as he spun himself before Draco’s still eyes.

Wet and sparkling and beautiful.

‘....The sweet bells will start ringing...’

“Hey Ron! Is he smiling? He won’t tell me!” Droplets sprayed on his face, from a different direction than the rain, softer than the rain, smelling of wood and apples not thunder and wind. The wind whipped that hair, spraying ink about.

‘....The dark gloomy sky will part and soft golden light will spill forth....’

Arms wrapped around his neck, “Do you want me to kiss you? Will that make you smile? It always makes me smile when mum kisses me.”

Draco realised he’d been holding on tightly to the stranger’s waist. He’d have fallen on the mud if not for that grip.

Strangers don’t help, then why.....out of nowhere......

‘....And a beautiful angel with gilded wings will step down and kiss all your pain away...’

Soft lips pressed against his cheek and Draco’s eyes fluttered close. They felt too heavy to remain open anymore. The drops slithered down his cold face on which warm lips rested. The warmth seeping through his drenched, cold clothes and colder heart.

‘..... the dragon will ask his name...’

“What’s your name,” his voice came out rough and scratchy, barely audible.

“Harry,” those lips were still smiling, soft and empathic.

He must have tasted his tears.

‘.....hearing the angel’s sweet name, the dragon will smile....’

And Draco smiled.

“AND – HE - SMILED!!!” a dozen voices chorused as Harry laughed and yanked his blindfold away in triumph.

Emerald green eyes met slate grey as the soft sunlight finally chased the darkness away.

Where are you going?” He ignored it, silently cursing him in his mind while knowing he wouldn’t really do that out loud, and continued his walk inside. He pushed the glass door open by the horizontal handle, then let it fall shut behind him as he made his way to the green sitting room."

I always see people who have never been antis, talking about/questioning how some antis even ARE antis when you look at their taste in media - ie the ever famous joke of "Hannigram is #problematique" "but it's a show where he eats people" or whatever.

I thought I'd weigh in as someone who could, hypothetically, be called an ex-anti (which, thankfully, nothing ever really came out of it - it was just very 2014 keyboardwarrior-esque behavior of me being a chronically online young adult who would share posts in a group chat making fun of certain shippers, or reblog posts about how 50shades is The Most Problematic Media Ever to exist -- basically I was an anti with anti-lines of thoughts, but i never, like, a ran a Shipping Discourse Blog or whatever)

For me, personally, it was a few different things. I can now see how it's incredibly hypocritical that teenaged me shipped Light/L, while still thinking that Dramione was Bad And Abusive. It ultimately boiled down to a) being pretentious, and b) just not understanding media or what proshippers REALLY believed, with a side of c) not realizing that nuance exists. like i was pretty late to join tumblr, I think I immigrated here during PEAK "yourfaveisproblematic" era which definitely did have an impact on my opinions and my tastes.

to elaborate, a.) being pretentious. i mean this one just kinda goes without saying. "I engage in media in a way more intellectual way than you do, don't you know that? You're a filthy and disgusting person who writes Snape/Hermione because you're an actually disgusting pedophile IRL who would probably date your own student that you're abusing if you could. Meanwhile, I'm a very smart, good, and pure person. When I read Uncle Vernon/Harry, I'm doing it in a G-d honoring whump way that clearly condemns abuse, incest, and rape. Unlike YOU who only writes harmful stuff as a way to get people off :/"

(as an aside, i think this line of thinking will ALWAYS be present in fandom and popculture in some way, sadly. ie the recent trend of people hating on booktok bc the books are 'trashy' and how these porn addicts should read real classic literature instead.)

as for b.), not understanding media - i cannot emphasize enough that i was GENUINELY stupid and disconnected enough to think that proshippers REALLY WERE pro-All Of The Degenerate Dead Doves That They Wrote.

why did i feel this way? why did i understand that Lolita clearly isnt pro-pedophilia, but for some reason i thought that someone shipping weecest was? well, first of all, i think that fanfiction is (generally) seen as Less Serious than classic literature, and fandom is a fun place, so i guess i somehow thought that every fanfic/fanartist who wrote Problematic Things, especially Problematic Things that they portrayed as Sexy, really DID enjoy the thought of that Actually Happening To Real People.

and i think THIS is the bulk of why antis ARE antis. i'm not calling them all stupid - i do think BEING an anti is stupid, but at the same time, there are people who are truly smart and good-intended people who just have some really off color opinions about, like, homestuck ships or whatever. Lawlight is okay because notebooks that kill people don't exist so it's IMPOSSIBLE for the Harmful Aspects of Light/L to be romanticized! but schoolyard prejudiced bullies DO exist and are a REAL problem so Drarry is BAD (*truly completely unaware of the fact that there's 'realistic' aspects of the Light/L dynamic and 'unrealistic' aspects of Drarry - such as, for example, Hogwarts arguably being even MORE of a fantasy setting than DN is.*) I know that media literacy is the hot buzzword of the year to throw around in 2024, but, like, i really did not have media literacy.

as for c.), not realizing nuance exists - ok "nuance" might not be the best word here, but i dont know how else to describe it. like, each time ive typed the word "problematic" out in this ask, i've done so in a very tongue in cheek/ironic/retroactive way, but, like, those posts about how Everything Is Problematic, Including Your Fave ARE true. and i didn't like the fact that my favorite media or favorite person might've Made A Mistake! i need to Talk About Its Issues Because I'm So Betrayed That My Dear Sweet Comfort Media Would Do This To Me. I Need To Prove I Clearly Condemn It.

like, i legit morally could not justify reblogging a twilight post without adding in the tags '#this is my guilty pleasure it sucks that the books were so racist though' or whatever. Most people were lucky enough to avoid that line of thinking, but there was an actual group of people who felt a genuine need to virtue signal all the time, partly bc, hey, they WERE passionate about talking abt #issues in media, but also bc of a subconscious fear of If You Reblog A Singular Piece Of Hetalia Fanart, You're Literally A Nazi And Will Get A Callout Post Written About You.

and during all of this i was at the tail end of my high school experience (yes i know im younger than most of your audience, ha). i was going through A Lot emotionally, going through a lot of life changes, and lived in a very . . . interesting household/place where i couldn't do ACTUAL good in the world that i was passionate about. so to make up for the fact that i was genuinely in no place to do legit activism, clearly i had to save the gay community by arguing about johnlock queerbaiting or whatever.

^ and honestly i do think that is the position of most antis. theyre isolated and cant seem to do Enough in the Real Scary World so they have to resort to talking about how bad of a person someone is for "shipping abuse", bc theyre not in a situation where they could, for example, ACTUALLY fight the good fight to end abuse or raise awareness for it.

There was way more to it and way more that I could say, if I wanted to, but this post is long enough as it is and probably doesn't make much sense.

I feel bad for antis, honestly, or at least the ones who are antis in the way I used to be.

if you read me, you know...i do not write angst. i have one (1) fic where i stepped out of my lane and wrote angst-lite. it's not even really angst, but more moody atmospheric. and interestingly enough, the most purple i've prosed. my beta was like, peach, what? the weed which strings the hangman's bag

pfft, all my fics have the happiest endings.

nope. i did get hate on a supportive/love comment i left on a friend's fic once. that's, like, 7th circle of hell troll behavior to be hating on a comment.

recently, i've had the immense pleasure of listening to my fics read aloud in published podfics. and let me say, this is a brilliant way to spot weaknesses. and while my banter may be good, sometimes i maybe inject too much action into my conversations. it disrupts the flow. also, long, plotty fics ellude me. i'm a pantser/gardner style writer and plotting/outlining makes me hyperventilate.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

yes, if used sparingly, and in such a way that i (as an english only speaker) can intuit what is being said. and also if translations are provided as a footnote. i've got a french-speaking Draco in my Dron fics [1] [2], where he lapses in the heat of passion.

i love ur drarry fics - i returned to reading drarry after a rlly long time and i live ur portrayal of them. i wanted to ask what ur thoughts are on the popular desi harry hc as a fellow desi person. personally i feel like a lot of attempts to focus on it come off super inauthentic + only focus on the desi “aesthetic” more than anything else. but i feel like maybe it’d be better when written by a desi author. i fear some of them come off too obviously like theyre written by non desis (not that i dont appreciate their efforts lol)

hello! thanks so much, first of all; i'm flattered! hmmm... i want to start by saying i'm not against desi harry by any means--i prefer writing him desi (though it doesn't show because i'm quite bad at physical description and antsy about integration lol) & i've read loads of fics with desi harry that i really love. in general i vastly prefer reading him desi than white; beyond being pleased at adding representation to a heavily flawed series, it just activates that childish part of my brain that likes seeing my favourite characters be like me :P

that being said, i definitely understand what you mean regarding attempts that feel a bit clumsy or, um... obviously written by white people, for lack of a delicate way to put it haha! i remember checking out a few fairly popular fics and being really taken aback at what they chose to include as part of their rep (the semipopular "snake charmer" trope & variations irt parseltongue really make me raise my eyebrows even when the intention obviously isn't to be racist), and there are lots of portrayals that are obviously well-intentioned but still miss the mark a bit. personally tend to bristle with ones that have, for example, having huge swaths of the plot dedicated to harry teaching his friends about desi customs or desi food: mostly because it feels a little unnatural/almost ooc with the harry we know from the books.

if i remember correctly, aideomai is desi? and their fics have my personal favourite kind of use of desi harry, where it's mentioned enough that it's unambiguous that he Is desi, but the fic doesn't become about him being desi before he's harry. but i think even the attempts that i personally don't have a lot of fun reading are doing their best to represent a group of people whose only representation in canon was via incredibly minor characters, so i don't mind it at all overall :P

-not really obsessed, but I'd have to say Nick/Maddie from PR: Mystic Force. I really liked their dynamic and tbh, it was that couple that introduced me to fanfics because I went googling for info on Melanie and Firass

2. Which ship would you consider your first one?

-oh that's an easy one: Tommy/Kim. The moment I saw them on screen, I started shipping them before I even knew what shipping was. They were my OTP before I even knew what that was. 3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?

-Tommy/Kimberly. After I learned what fanfic was from searching Maddie/Nick...I stumbled upon a Tommy/Trini story and it didn't sit right with me lol. I kept thinking "Tommy and Kim are meant to be" and then I started writing a story about them. Took my weeks, after I'd written the first seven chapters, to work up my courage to actually post that first chapter.

-more than likely Nick and Maddie.

-uhm....I mean, not really? I've responded to one or two anon posts or even made a post or two about a ship but actual discourse? I usually have those discussions with my friend

-ha! Did I ever! And still do: Kataang, Klance, Hinny, McRolls, Tommy/Kat, Jason/Kim, Dramione, Romione.

7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?

-well, I'm currently reading three fanfics right now, so the couple in those are: Zutara, Tododeku, KinnPorsche

-ohh yeah: Tomberly, Drarry, Sheith, Zutara, KinnPorsche, Tododeku, DickKory, Geraskier

9. Is there any couple, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together?

-yes. I'm pissed they broke Kim and Tommy (rumor was, the letter wasn't even the original storyline but they did it because they wanted the fans to let go of Kimberly and accept Kat); Sheith (they had the best chemistry and the show kept drawing parallels between them and other couples on the show, including Keith's own parents); Zutara (they just made sense and I think Katara would've really blossomed even more because Zuko never would've stifled her or encourage to forego her own culture); Drarry (sure as shit, if one of them was female, it would've happen, so I don't see why it couldn't happen anyways. Plus, I feel they would've understood and balanced each other a lot better than their Canon couples).

-nope.

-i dont think so, no.

-hmmm...idk, equality, I guess. The way they understand each other, how they are each others safe space in a way, how they can be themselves (all facets of themselves, e.g., angry, happy, messy, etc.) with each other, the way they're different but also the same in some ways

15. What do you absolutely hate in a ship?

-a bully/victim dynamic that is labeled as enemies-to-lovers; when a miscommunication happens and the person immediately runs away/avoids the other without giving them a chance to explain, which leads into the miscommunication going on for more than 2-3 chapters (even worse when it's a 15 chapter story and the miscommunication happened in like ch 2 and you're on ch 12 and it...is...still...going on)

Do you have minor ships in Drarry fics that you like/dont like? Cause I have really weird opinions where I really love some background ships (Hermione/Ron, Harry/Charlie, Ginny/Pansy), dont like others for no good reason (Luna/Ginny, Neville/Harry), and others only if they fit ~my perculiar criteria (Harry/Ginny only as teens/young adults not older, Draco/women only in an arranged marriage cause my Draco is GaY) :D

hi! hmmm, i don't know if i have ones i really dislike that much. i guess one that bothers me is like harry/draco blaise/ron pansy/hermione all at once, or that sort of thing? i like (what my head thinks is) a more realistic view of how friend groups tend to mix. i will always have a soft spot for ron/pansy tho.

and i've said before that even though i ship ron/hermione i do think they'd have a bumpy ride/break up/maybe sometimes it doesn't always work out. i don't like when they're just the boring stable straight couple (even though i think ron is straight, in my heart) popping out babies in the background of harry's mess (my acceptance of epilogue compliance starts and end with scorpius' name, everything else goes in the trash) i like them to have some drama of their own!

i am famously okay with harry and draco with other people in fics, haha, and most of those ships work for me as long as the other partner isn't demonized. harry/ginny and draco/astoria are both cool with me but u have to be nice to them. i also don't mind the arranged marriage stuff BUT i don't always headcanon draco as gay, read/write him as bi sometimes, and probably prefer draco/astoria to be a real relationship. sorry to disagree!!

this is getting wordy so

i think my brain does this weird calculus for that where i actually don't see harry/ginny working out as a real adult couple outside of nostalgic adolescent feelings/idyllic teen sweethearts (which is hilariously ironic, since my husband is my older brother's best friend who i met in high school...) but draco/astoria would have connected post-canon as adults or near adults, when draco has grown up and reflected and redeemed himself a bit. so that works out better to me in my mind, like astoria set up not as a remnant of his old pureblood life that he has to endure but as someone who helps him change for the better and is a part of that growth, because she's going through a similar change. even when they get married, i like when they kind of feel like they're tricking their parents about it lol. like yes we're married but we're not going to be like you! love breaking generational trauma patterns.

i know this is kind of a hot take and rarely see people agree with the above lol. my preference for writing harry and draco with other people is to go for OCs because i think people are inevitably going to hate them no matter what, so i might as well make them original. also the idea that you only ever date people you went to school with is so boring to me!! tbh i like both harry and draco to have dated around a bit before they're together.

all the smut. mostly vanilla-ish? i like to change up positions or what the sexual act is, but i dont cross into anything kink mostly cause i just write what i know/like/is comfortable.

honestly, Im starting to think Echoes wont be finished. i havent had the want to write it all year and i dont think the first parts are really my best writing. so part of me might even delete and rewrite it if i start getting the vibes to pursue it again.

characterization. i love fanfic because i can use the base of what we know and grow from the tiny details to make fully developed ones. its hard for me to read some fics that the characterization doesnt match what i know from the books without explanation. like its hard for me to see hermione as a sugar baby for money and loves being doted on because i dontt hink that matches her from the books but like if you can explain she gets her strength and independence from manipulating men then im like yes okay im on board.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

im awful with commas. everyone else loves them but i forget them so much grammarly is always yelling at me.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

nah. i've been living in italy for a month now and the only words i know are ciao and allora LOL - if i want it i ask someone to translate for me
