#I just had to say this bc I’ve been thinking about their perception of how s5 will go down lately

Nothing has made me more confident in byler endgame than reading milkvan fan fiction set post-s4.
To be clear this is no hate to fanfic writers living their life!! This has nothing to do with the quality or anything like that! I actually do get a lot of entertainment out of this and give kudos when I’m left especially like WOW that really happened.
Initially, I did it just out of curiosity recently, bc I needed to know how some of them think or just simply want to imagine in terms of how the show will handle that early s5 interaction between Mike and El, and every single time it feels wrong. It feels like the most regressive direction the show could possibly go.
It’s often somewhere along the lines of El reminding herself she needs to live up to Mike’s claim that she’s his superhero and Mike telling her that Will made him realize it’s hard to open up but that once he did he finally realized he loved her ever since he met her…
I could not be more confident nothing along those lines is going to happen… 🤣✌️

"and i am CONVINCED that it was azazel scheming to put someone else on the throne of hell to BLOCK lucifer’s ascension from the cage" literally stopped and stared bc i've never heard this one before, can you please elaborate
oh yes! i love this theory! be prepared for a LONG ANSWER
so basically imo the boyking and lucifer’s vessel arcs don’t entirely mesh. why go through all the trouble of creating all the special children and having them compete when sam is the one who HAS to be lucifer’s vessel? what’s the point of creating a monarch who is powerful enough and motivated to rule hell in their own right if they’re just gonna be possessed by lucifer? and why still be feeding babies demon blood in series 1? we know lucifer told azazel to find a child, to find his vessel, but having that child rule hell as the demons were expecting per the boyking comment doesn’t make sense. why would the winner of azazel’s contest ever give up their power and their BODY to be lucifer’s puppet? it doesn’t make sense
so, what does? (or at least is fun and interesting to think about)
i’ve always though demons as a whole should have been more conniving. the hell politics we got were always too simplistic. where are the SCHEMES. surely crowley wasn’t the only one who realised that lucifer had an even lower opinion of demons than of humanity and didn’t want him ruling?
azazel knew lucifer personally, was created by lucifer personally. he knows exactly what lucifer is like, so why wouldn’t he have an accurate understanding of how fucked demonkind would be if lucifer came back and the apocalypse started? also, he’s running hell, why would he want to give up that power? but he’d also want plausible deniability, both so he could control the demons who still support lucifer (like lilith and his own daughter meg!) and also on the off chance he failed and lucifer did rise
which leads us to the special children. this is where i get more into the realm of headcanon in terms of what hell is actually like, but i still think it tracks with the show. the descriptions of hell and the visuals of hell we get are all wildly different. crowley’s queue, dean’s pit, sam’s medieval dungeon, meg’s bone and blood and pain. they’re different enough that i think hell changes based in your perception. either to what will make you suffer the most (dean and meg), or if you’re powerful enough what you tell it to be (crowley very much on purpose, sam subconsciously. he created hell into somewhere he could relatively easily rescue bobby from)
all this to say that hell is a living thing. it can accept or reject a ruler, and the more accepted they are the harder it is for a ruler to be deposed. if they’re integrated with hell enough they simply can’t be. lucifer as the creator of demonkind and original ruler should be the best fit and the most accepted, but lucifer doesn’t want hell, he’ll always resent being there instead of heaven, so hell will never completely accept him. and a demon will never truly be accepted either, because they’re not lucifer and they’re not an angel, so they’re not enough like him to be a fully effective substitute
but a human with demon blood? they’re closer to the divine than a demon, but they don’t know heaven to long for it. there’s every possibility that hell would accept that special child more than azazel and more than lucifer, and because that child has the full power and support of the creature that is hell they might be able to hold the cage closed even with lilith’s death, or simply stop lucifer from taking power in hell once he’s risen, or even outright kill lucifer
so with that in mind, of course sam is the favourite. azazel is gambling here so he’s keeping his options open with multiple candidates, but lucifer’s true vessel is always gonna have the best chance of being accepted by hell and taking lucifer’s place. as long as he can control sam he’s coming up roses
but then azazel dies, and i don't see him trusting his true plans and motivations to any other demon, so they all just play out the apocalypse like they thought they were supposed to from the start. except for the crowleys (and in my headcanon ruby but that’s a question for when i finally finish and publish kindred instruments rip) who are smart enough to figure out that lucifer views them as vaguely useful cockroaches
obviously this is a watsonian answer to a doylist question, but i always find those the most fun anyway

so i’ve been thinking about Willem’s actual goals with ascension and insight. theres a note you can find in the lecture hall that says “Master Willem was right. Evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race.” This sort of reads as Willem having the ‘courage’ to take the leaps needed for ascension, most likely experimentation, which makes sense considering the Garden of Eyes enemies you encounter outside of Byrgenwerth. But the way it’s written is confusing; if anything the Healing Church, Laurence, and even Micolash were the ones who had the ‘courage’ to do what was needed to ascend (more experimentation, abandoning Byrgenwerth for their own institutions, etc.). And also, who would have written this? Out of the main school of thought within Bloodborne Willem was definitely the most careful regarding what needed to be done for evolution.
So then I looked into the LastProtagonist retranslations of the original Japanese text, to which the note instead read:
ウィレーム先生は正しい。情けない進化は人の堕落だ
“Professor Willem is right. (The) wretched evolution is man's downfall.”
That adds a completely new context. The ‘wretched evolution’ mentioned in the text could be interpreted as his fear of the Old Blood that Laurence believed in, and the transformation of men into beasts is what is destroying Yharnam. But here me out, okay:
Ascension to me exists on a sort of spectrum, and adding more insight or blood furthers your transformation from just being able to perceive the truth around you to a genuine metamorphosis into an entirely new being. I think Willem was fervently against the extreme side of ascension, and instead wanted to just perceive the Great Ones as they were. Insight is tied to being able to see and understand concepts and beings larger than you, and before you bring in the concept of insight being used for a physical transformation it makes sense that “lining the brain with eyes” would primarily involve increased perception. Willem never wanted to be a Great One, rather he just wanted to understand them in a way his mind could understand.
The schism between him and Laurence was not because of differing paths to ascension, but fear of evolution as a whole. Laurence flies too close to the sun and thinks he can become a god, rather than just a general difference in theory thar could’ve worked hand in hand.
I think this also adds an interesting new perspective to Willem’s adage. "We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open." It's interesting how directly blood is associated to humanity in this, and so I think it's Willem’s way of reminded laurence that our blood is what makes ur human and gives us or humanity, and coveting god blood and injecting goes completely against the laws of nature. As for "our eyes are yet to open", i think it old either be read as Willem saying that humans are not ready to ascend and our hubris blinds us from that fact, or even better that humans are not made to ascend bc we live on the basest of planes, that is our place in the universe. The most we can do is at last perceive the mysteries around us, not able to grasp it but isnt it enough to just know what these things are? Yknow?
This would also mean that Micolash’s school of thought aka using insight to complete a physical transformation would make it a sort of hybrid of Willem and Laurence’s theories. He believes in the use of insight, but also in a more hands-on approach to reaching godhood via experimentation that Laurence was more inclined towards, and would’ve even partaken in since he was apart of the Choir at some point in time.

It took me a while to notice that the Encanto gramma predicates them “deserving” the miracle (survivor’s guilt there) on them using their gifts for everyone who asks for help, all day, no rest, and tries to make sure no one in the town ever feels alone or unprotected, but not only is that making the kids feel exhausted and inauthentic and unseen; it’s also making her unable to deal with reality (the miracle faltering); and it’s also probably the reason Bruno felt like his gift was hurting everyone, bc it made the villagers really uncomfortable. At first the way “we don’t talk about Bruno” presents him made me think he was walking around telling people bad news unasked, but then he says everyone kept asking him, they just didn’t like the answers. So the town feeling unsafe around him made abeula feel like they were failing them.
And! The way Pepa tells her part of the song makes it sound like everything was sunshine at the wedding until he said what he said. But her husband corrects her “there wasn’t a cloud in the sky” to “no clouds ALLOWED in the sky.” And then at the end Bruno said “I could see that you were stressing,” which presumably means she did already have a little cloud when he showed up. But every time Pepa shows a cloud Abuela yells at her. She’s even dressed all in yellow with sun earrings, she’s trying to hard to stay sunny for Abuela. So she revised it in her memory to Bruno causing it. But then at the end when he tells her he wishes she would just feel all her feelings, her husband says “I’ve been saying that” and at the very end she’s dancing in the snow.
And at first I thought Mirabel had no gift but she and Bruno have almost the same gift! He had future sight and she has inner sight—she can see the cracks in the house before they appear, she can see Luisa’s trauma visually as she explains it. And at first she seems more determined than Bruno to follow through on her gift, but by the end she followed the same route as him—she ran off convinced she’d failed them. But bc Abuela had been through it already with Bruno she was able to make a different choice this time and follow Mirabel and let her teach her. I wonder if Abuela had inner sight too, since Mirabel seems poised to inherit the rest of her gift—house and candle guardian. She pretends she doesn’t believe the magic is faltering but then privately admits she knows, so is it bc she can see it too and was in denial? Or she just guessed bc of what happened to Mirabel?
The fact that Bruno saw the future still in doubt means the visions were multi layered anyway. And adjusting to free will as it happened. I love that Bruno’s prophecies are fluid like that. How the meaning shifts in response to what they choose. Dolores takes his prophecy and chooses to go get her man, Isabela takes it and gets new dreams of her own. So it doesn’t hurt them. I love how all of them develop so much more dimension to their gifts when they’re allowed to use it for themselves and not just for service! Selfishness!! It’s so necessary! I think it’s one of the best forms of healing trauma!! Bc our idea of selfishness gets so twisted. i’ve heard some people say they wished they hadn’t gotten their gifts back. They thought it would be more powerful if they didn’t, but I think the point is that the gifts are just who they are, it’s not really about them being magic. The house only amplifies the gift.
We never really get to see Mirabel’s moms inner life, which makes sense because that’s how we are with our parents at that age. But I do wonder if she had any adjusting she needed to do..
Also fascinating how Dolores is the one after Bruno who sees how things are most accurately, and she sees how nobody wants to hear what he sees, so she stays quiet about her perceptions about what she hears and just reports what she’s asked for neutrally, almost mechanically (unless it’s a major emergency, lol). Like Mirabel says Dolores will tell everyone, but she never argued with anyone about Bruno being bad even though she knew it was more complicated than that, she never tells anyone she still hears him sometimes, she reports “he wants five babies” with the barest quirk of her mouth, she never once mentions Isabela’s bf is her dream man even though Bruno told her that would happen years ago. Her verse about Bruno is by far the most perceptive but she almost whispers it. And only tells Mirabel things if she’s asked. It's so traumatic to be the one who sticks out, who can’t hide the gift so it antagonizes everyone. But it’s almost as traumatic to be the one who has to stifle their gift and not to use it nearly to its potential because so they’ve seen what will happen.
It’s SO layered and so dang accurate to how trauma plays out generationally and I’ve rewatched it three times and still keep noticing things and WOW. And Dos Origuitas makes me cry. Bc it’s layered too! It’s not just “you’ll transform through trauma,” it’s “the process of transformation may take you away from the people you went through the trauma with, and that’s ok, you have to let each other go and trust the cocoon and that you’ll find each other again after if you can” and that’s a lot!!!

So here’s my deal with Tommy. Do I like his character, meh sure okay. Had some good humor but you could feel the we’re only okay with you vibe from Chim and Hen. Will I be upset if he does get together with Buck, no but I will be rolling my eyes hard and waiting the inevitable fizzle out or crash and burn. Do I believe that is direction they’re going, not really. My perception is that Tommy is giving insight in what makes the 118 so great, a blast from the not so wonderful past you know? Not saying he’ll be a bad guy, but maybe a comment here or there that instigates some plot points…
PS Your posts really make my day very often, especially when I see the negative nay sayers that mock the buddie fandom. Big hugs for you!
PSS Manifesting 🔥 pictures from Oliver and or Ryan for you. Your reaction is everything.
I am very much under the same assumption as you and I have been since we found out he was gonna be back. I really thought he’d be back to instigate certain plot points and make comments here and there for drama possibly. Not gonna say he’s here to be a big bad villain but I don’t think that in any way. I don’t hate the guy but I’m indifferent bc I don’t care for him either. Again I’m just waiting to see how things play out and keeping hopeful and optimistic as I always tend to do.
Thank you 🥹🥹🤗🤗💜💜 that’s so sweet especially when I get negative anons sending me hate when I tend to have different opinions than the majority of the fandom. I’m curating my own fandom experience and speaking about my thoughts on my blog as everyone else is free to do. If I see something I don’t agree with I usually keep scrolling. But thank you nonetheless that’s so sweet!!!! And hahaha thank you 😂💜💜 manifesting real hard so I can be a thirsty bitch with all the other friends I’ve made here while thirsting over those sexy men!!

You guys don’t understand how much Jazzfordshire’s stories mean to me (or maybe you do)
(TRIGGER WARNING: mentions of h0mophobia)
I don’t usually get really sappy with writers and the stories they write but I just finished Jazzfordshire’s 70′s AU (part 2).  Istg that the first part of that AU is the story i read the most out of all the Supercorp fanfics I read (and considering SC fanfics is the only type of literature I consume, that’s saying a lot). I always found it comforting, but even if the first part is from Kara’s POV, the part that I connect with the most is Lena’s. She is a lesbian, she knows it, she feels what she feels but is painfully aware that she can’t freely express herself, she can’t open up to anyone bc they might insult her or treat her as a “something” instead of a “someone”.
I used to identify as a lesbian. For five years of my life, I was out to myself, but deadly afraid of living in the outside world. My friends knew and some of them were queer themselves, but I still felt that loneliness inside me.
Even though on this day and age I no longer identify as such, all those things that Lena feels in this story… is just so painfully relatable.
When I started thinking about this, I thought about other stories by this lovely author and realized that, in some of them, the relationship between Lena and Lillian is kinda the same to the one i had with my mother.
Lillian is not supportive of her daughter’s sexuality. But it’s not like she kicks her out or does something more “grotesque”, she is just described as distant… someone who, at the tiniest little show of Lena’s preference for women, she makes not-so-subtle comments about how NOT ok she’s with the fact that Lena is a lesbian. So as a result of that, Lena is deadly afraid of being “obviously” queer, out in the open.
And that, my friend, is EXACTLY what I needed to read when I was younger.
“Isn’t that counterproductive? If you are sad about your relationship with your sexuality, you shouldn’t read homophobic stuff… right?”
Good question, but while I do needed an “everything is going to be ok” type of story, I also needed a story that described that awkward and painful relationship between a mother and her queer daughter. That type of relationship where your mom is not supportive, but she is also not kicking you out or being physically ab*sive. This is because the only realities shown to me by the media at that time were parents being extremely supportive, awfully ab*sive or they will just kick you out. So, even though I used to feel awful with myself because of my mom’s unsupportive behavior, what used to make me feel significantly worse was the guilt of feeling depressed when I should be thankful that she responded this way bc “it could’ve been worse, she didn’t kick me out.”
(That last paragraph was me describing how I felt back in the day. Jazz, as far as I’ve read of her repertoire, doesn’t dwell on the deeper effect that THAT kind of relationship has on you as the queer daughter.)
So, I really needed my feelings to be validated by anyone or anything. And I also needed to see that I deserve to be supported and comforted whenever I felt a sad about my mother’s behavior.
That support and comfort is seen on the way Kara interacts with Lena. In some fanfics like the Ice Skating AU, Lena has a pretty big storyline regarding her sexuality. Every time she feels like she is showing a bit too much gayness or hears the voice of Lilian in her mind shaming her, Kara is like “it’s ok, I’m right here and I love you”.
She is not telling her to get over it, she is not telling her how to fix it, she is just accompanying her through it.
And that is another thing i needed, that is exactly what i craved as a teenager. I needed someone there… just there… to hug me through it.
But the matter of the fact is that I’m finding this stories years later and while my relationship w my mom is basically the same, my sexuality and self perception have changed. I’m now a bi guy.
But now reading these stories, feels like it’s healing my inner child. Feels like a hug for the 14 y/o me that was so effing sad and so effing alone.
@jazzfordshire ‘s stories are dear to my heart and are helping the little teen in me, feel seen and comforted.
So, in case you are reading this, thank you so much. Your stories are beautiful and I hope you continue writing ❤️

—Hey... are you here?— Izuku asked softly, his head peeking through the door of your room to check on you. You'd locked yourself in after receiving a text during class, and Izuku - being the perceptive person he was - knew something was wrong.
The tears that were once shy in your eyes had turned into blurry fat drops, ashamed that Midoriya had to see you so distraught, affected in a way he could, perhaps, not understand.
—Leave me alone!— You yelled, your bloodshot gaze looking at him with an expression he'd never witnessed before. The breaths you somewhat managed to achieve were short and shaky, upset and startled by the wave of emotions surging in you.
You were hurt and, certainly, you were scared; he could see it by the way you'd chosen to curl up in one of the corners of your dorm.
—I'm not leaving, especially not when I know you are not doing ok.— He said, cautiously trying to de-escalate the situation. If you could understand how important you were to him, you'd see why he was so worried about you.
Slowly but firmly, he allowed himself to sit by your side, giving you space but remaining close enough to let you know he wasn't going to let go easily of you.
You couldn't help but blurt what happened, vulnerable and frail. It was like being exposed to the world, a world that seemed not to like you very much.
—They left me, Izu- I, why? Did I do something wrong?— Midoriya heard you hiccup, your voice drowning between sobs and whimpers. His heart clenched in pain with every cry that escaped your lips, his arms finding their way around your body to embrace you.
—Who left you?— He asked. You reached for your phone, showing him the text of a friend - ex-friend - saying they no longer wished to be with you, all because of your identity.
Anger arose from Midoriya's chest, his teeth clenching in rage. “What the heck is wrong with some people? The audacity-” He thought. Anyone would be affected if someone important to them suddenly decided to call quits because of their personal life.
—You didn't do anything wrong. I promise you…— You heard the greenette assure, but the voices in your head were telling you otherwise. —You're perfect just the way you are, and - the people that truly matter are here for you.
—You'll leave me too, right?— Izuku heard you ask, frowning at your words. How could anyone dare to do this to a human being?
—I won't, I'll never leave. I promise!— The boy pledged, rubbing small soothing circles on your back. —I'll be by your side for as long as you'll have me…
Sniffing, you looked at your freckled friend with hope. He'd never lied to you, and for so long, he'd always stayed true to his vows.
—I just, I don't know…
—But I know, and while I don't have the same experiences you have, be sure that I'll be here to support you in every decision you take.— He told you with a sunny smile, holding you close as the remnants of your emotional torment flowed.
—You don't think I'm a freak?— You meekly whispered, gripping his shirt as if it were keeping you afloat.
—Of course not! You're the coolest person I know, regardless of how you present yourself.— He cooed, basking in the way your lips timidly curled into a smile.
—There you go, see? Your friends, your true friends, they love you. I love you, no matter what. And if that person decided to leave because of something like that, then screw them! Who needs them?— Midoriya preached. Wiping the dampness off your cheeks, you nodded in agreement.
—You're right, I- I think it was for the best.— You answered. It was as clear as daylight now, the ones that mattered didn't mind, and those who mind didn't matter.
— Now, come. Want to see if there are any All Might ice cream pops at the convenience store?— Izuku offers. —My treat.
—The ones that are always deformed because they melted?
—Precisely!
You grinned, more comfortably and lighter than before. —Thanks Izu, I could do with a treat right now.
Midoriya kissed the side of your head sheepishly but content; he was not going to let anyone harm you.
—We can watch a movie after that, a-and maybe even hang out with Iida and Ochako!— He added.
You felt a warm sensation nest on your heart; Izuku was a real friend.

why I think know Sally Jackson is a descendant of venus (and by extension percy):
(yes this does take a turn and mainly focus on percy bc sally is a secondary character. while she appears in every book, she’s only there for a little bit so all the proof is in percy)
have you seen her? lets be honest. she pulled poseidon and he fell in love with her after a few months. queen shit (-poseidon, 2005). apollo said he woulda flirted w her had he not been lester. she and paul got married after like,, what was it? a year? two? whatever. queen shit.
her eyes shift colors!!! read the lightning thief!!! it’s mentioned frequently!!! (“her eyes sparkle and change color in the light” page 33, chapter 3; “her eyes tugged at my conscience, trying to pull out the secrets” (page 34, chapter 3 (not color related but still interesting); “she seemed to grow younger, years of worry and work disappearing from her face. her eyes turned the color of the sea.” page 37, chapter 3; “her multicolored eyes seemed to search inside me” page 352, chapter 21)
aphrodite/venus’s children are more perceptive and see possibilities between people and are like highly emotionally intelligent and both sally and percy share this trait. go back and read literally any interaction percy has with literally anybody, especially the whole octavian thing in son of neptune, percy could see and hear both of what octavian was saying and what he was saying (similar to piper understanding the interaction between annabeth and chiron in the lost hero)
AND sally is clear sighted which i know isn’t a thing reserved only for demigods and that mortals can be clear sighted but idc
percy spoke latin on the bus “chiron was his latin teacher” he had amnesia yet picked up on the latin in camp jupiter pretty quickly (“‘silver and gold.’ percy said. the latin meanings popped into his head like hazel had said they would.” page 35, chapter 3; “percy had to think about it, but the latin words clicked into english” page 52, chapter 4; “‘that one.’ he pointed, translating as he read aloud: ‘seven half-bloods shall answer the call…’” page 56, chapter 4; “percy didn’t understand all of it, but he got son of a gorgon, power-hungry snake, and a few choice suggestions about where octavian could stick his knife.” page 59, chapter 4)
not to be one of Those People but the fact that piper wasn’t attracted to percy LISTEN HEAR ME OUT PLS LMAO literally everyone was into percy let’s be real (cough who wouldn’t be cough) but piper was just like “eh…not that impressive. i’ve seen better.” they’re siblings my guy. like hazel deadass thought he was a god bc of his aura of power and incredibly good looks.
aphrodite/venus being born of the sea, connecting sally to the sea and her essentially shape shifting/becoming younger/relaxing to the point of physical change/idk how else to describe it when they go to montauk. okay like at the very least…there’s some nymph blood in her like one of her grandparents was human and the other was a nereid/naiad/oceanid but like roman bc there’s roman in percy idc idc

OKAY HI
I'm a person who indulges a huge majority of death note ships (minus the disgusting illegal ones), and I'm always open to finding more good ones!
Mind explaining why you ship L/Mello? :)
I'm just quite curious ^^
Sincerely,
-Mo
HIIII omfg so this is going to sound so deranged but my wife and I have been RPing them for like literally ages so my brain is clearly very mushy and tainted from this. I don’t know why I feel like I’m about to give a presentation in front of the class or why I’m worried about posting anything on the celibate radiator Mello blog but. LOL. Anyway. *pulling up my powerpoint* ← no but fr you know I’m serious because I’m typing this up on the computer instead of mobile (hence no cute queen Mello emojis).
So I know lots of people focus on Mello’s rivalry with Near as some sort of obsession with Near. I’m not going to go all pepe silvia here but I personally read Mello’s drive as being more narcissistic lol. He wants to be number one → and in his mind, this position is L. They are synonymous. The current L isn’t his competition, but rather the one to impress. Near is just the one who’s threatening to take this thing he wants very badly away from him, and/or (in Mello’s perception, at least) rubbing it in his face/flaunting his position. This really childish anger and cruelty he harbors towards Near is illustrated (TO MEEE) when Mello first gets the notebook and wipes out most of the SPK. ← was a dirt poor kid who beat up a rich girl that pissed me off bc she was always rubbing it in my face so. Yk projection and all.
Anyway, Mello really doesn’t seem to have a desire to be L in the sense of the actual role—his behavior seems really uncharacteristic of somebody who would be able to cooperate with the world’s law enforcement. But I also see him as having absorbed the lessons at Wammy’s on a surface level → he heard them say “yeah, and then L had to kidnap—“ but never heard/ignored the “it was a sort of last-resort deal, please don’t do this.”
Back to the point, (is there a point?) the LABB book (idgaf it’s canon so suck my left nut about it) tells us that they only ever had one conversation, during which L recounted the LABB case, the final fight between L and the real Eraldo Coil and Deneuve, and how L first met Watari when he was eight. ← I think Mello tracked L’s cases religiously. If he found out L was working on a case (which was rare, because details were under wraps, but he was good at sneaking around and eavesdropping on Roger’s calls with Watari), he would try to figure out every little detail he could, just hoping he could somehow help him out. He never did, but that didn’t mean he didn’t try. I also think it was sweet that he would have told Mello about meeting Watari/that Mello would have been interested/how it would have come up. Not in a ship way, but just in a noodle incident way.
Since this is obviously only plausible in the everybody-survives post-kira AU, I always like to think they first meet in-person then, since I imagine their one and only canon conversation was over a computer (as this is how L seems to have most of his interactions throughout the series lol). Mello definitely has a huge crush (but I don’t even want to call it that cause it’s really just a tangle of very confused feelings wires that are all crossed) but he doesn’t even know what L is like at all → it’s a crush on the concept of his existence. I’ve said this before but I think everybody has somebody they would embarrass themselves for and just as Matt would do for Mello, Mello would do for L. It’s not that Mello wouldn’t do a lot for Matt, but rather that he wants to impress L the same way Matt wants to impress him. L has no idea how to perceive Mello/has only heard horrible reports from Roger back at Wammy’s and is pretty concerned that he was blackmailing presidents and taking Kira’s sister hostage. T_T but at the same time, there’s a very small sliver of L that admires this insanity? ← recalling the oneshot (but erasing the human washing machine because I really think they just were sick of our asses atp) L was also a kind of violent and troubled kid that beat on other kids for trying to hug him LOL. I think L has a very strange and sadistic streak the fandom likes to play down in favor of focusing on his cutely autistic stare (which is also very important) but Mello and Near are supposed to represent the two halves of his coin so I think he’d be intrigued by Mello’s motives/methods? Maybe (read: definitely) not approving, but still perhaps a bit impressed by what he managed to pull off. Neither of them knows what to think of the other, cue 1million word slow burn.
I could keep rambling but at this point I’m approaching 1k and I’m getting very worried. LMFAO. I really want to write some of this ^ cuter/softer/pretending to be semi-canon BS (when I say cute I just mean nobody gets kidnapped/I don’t spend 10k describing horrific burns btw) so hopefully you’ll be interested and check that out when I get around to it. :>
Also re-reading and saw that I talked so so much and said virtually nothing I have to be completely self-indulgent and drop some cute post-Kira LMello fluff things bc I love my beautiful perfect wifey <333
+ They play a lot of chess and go, but Mello prefers checkers ← it’s faster, L is way better at go than he is, and L takes 20 minutes for every move in chess if they don’t play with a timer. L always plays black (obviously). I know you’re all going to ignore my sexual checkersposting but Mello tries to balance playing as fast as possible (needs L to know he’s soooo smart) and being as aggressive as possible (needs L to know he’s so strong and cool) ← this is the only way he can win btw. Playing insanely and not thinking too hard. If he follows any common strategies, L can easily counter them. Instead, he just pretends he’s playing with troops like a military general and chases L’s pieces around the board, trying to split them up/corner him/overwhelm him as quickly as possible. It’s pretty rare but when L says “good move.” Well. I shan’t say more.
+ They definitely go to tons of cafes/restaurants and only have desserts/drink fruity wine. Mello loves eating expensive food and L doesn’t necessarily mind being dragged places, even though he would normally just have Watari deliver them to him instead.
+ Mello helps L on cases, but only sometimes. L doesn’t know where he goes when he’s gone, but he always comes back within the week, even if it’s only for a day. ← once and a while he’ll break in through a back door and sneak past L’s cameras just to critique his security systems. L really hates when he does this (shows up silently behind him in a dark room lit by TVs like a serial killer). But he does take the advice to heart and always corrects the problem.

Hihi! Here with some character dynamic!! ❤️♦️♣️♠️🌹 for Klaus please? Thank you!
My bunny boy!
So I’ve actually only really thought about his relationship with Riddle, and even that was through the lens of his friendship with Fiamma, so this will be an interesting series of dynamics to explore?
Feel like I should also say before all of this that Klaus has some pretty high walls before he considers someone a friend at this point, bc he’s been bullied pretty badly for quite a while. So if it seems like a lot of this is him being antagonistic or uncharitable, it’s more of a defense mechanism than anything?
Preemptively tagging @inmateofthemind because a good chunk of this will be pertinent to our musing with him and Fia? (Especially the last bit)
I feel like he probably has a rocky start with Ace, generally jumping off with the assumption that Ace’s brash nature means he tends towards bullying (something that Klaus has had to deal with for far too long and has 0 tolerance for). Which probably causes some unnecessary tension between the two of them until something corrects Klaus’ perception, and he realizes that Ace is a bro, actually, even if he is a bit of a loud slacker? (Which. To be fair. Klaus is the king of doing things last-minute, so—) I think they actually end up having a decent bit in common, especially the tendency to call out injustice where they see it and pick fights with mages far stronger than them, so they probably end up being decent friends by the end of the first exchange, at least?
Cater is an interesting one, because I wonder if Cater wouldn’t see Klaus as a cute magical opportunity, because of his bunny features? I don’t think he’d -mean- anything by it, or even suggest it in anything less than a friendly way, but I don’t think Klaus would react well to being approached for his cuteness alone. I think he’d probably generally steer clear from Cater, especially once the generally hands-off nature of Cater’s friendships becomes clearer? Klaus isn’t one to put in effort with someone who doesn’t reciprocate a friendship in kind, even if Cater REALLY needs someone to put in that effort, for his own sake as much as anything. (Lookin at you, @ramshacklerumble)
Klaus would probably initially write Trey off as a pushover, always doing damage control for Riddle and seeming to let the other students walk all over him. But once he realizes that Trey has a mischievous and prideful streak a mile long, Klaus’ respect for him would grow. I don’t think they’re friends, persay, but I think Klaus probably sees something kindred in Trey, not necessarily in how he -presents- himself, but in what he actually -does-? (Specifically referencing Trey’s dorm uniform vignette here, in the context of what would cause Klaus to change his opinion on Trey. The sort of, “you think you can do this better? Alright. I’d like to see you try.” And then him preparing a contingency plan in the background anyway bc he knows the freshmen are gonna totally fail, etc.)
I actually think Klaus probably warms up to Deuce faster than Ace? If only because he basically looks at this boy and goes “oh bless your heart, you’re trying.” Deuce might be a dumbass, but he makes a point of trying to be a good dude, whereas Ace just kinda speaks his mind constantly even if what he says isn’t always. Complementary? Basically I think he’d respect the obvious effort Deuce us putting in to be someone his mom can be proud of, even if Klaus generally doesn’t care what anyone thinks of him. (If this is incomprehensible I’m so sorry, I’m very sleepy but wanted to get this out before I forgot BEJEJCJDJF)
And Riddle! His best friend’s beau! I actually think Klaus probably VERY MUCH DOES NOT LIKE HIM, at first? Because I think Riddle probably gives him shit early on for “misusing his signature spell” (which is a time displacement sort of thing?) Klaus absolutely would not take kindly to even the threat of having his magic sealed, especially noting that it is also his main defense against Penny and Ruby, his and Fiamma’s major bullies. Also to note that Klaus would not have been around for Riddle’s Overblot, so he would have NO IDEA about his trauma or Why He’s Like That until he’s directly told by Riddle, Fia, or someone else. Once he finds out, and especially once Fia makes clear her interest in Riddle, his attitude towards him mellows out substantially, and he eventually grows to call Riddle one of his best friends as well, I think. (Even if he does still, lovingly, joke about how stuffy Riddle’s adherence to rules can be, it’s in a much more endearing tone than annoyed)
If you would like clarification on any of this, I’d be more than happy to give it btw!!!

Another neat thing on perception in media is kaiju-esque creatures so I’m about to ramble again. I’m gonna use Steven Universe bc it has both great and bad examples (screenshots from Youtube).
Behold (to me) the biggest gems in the series:
Malachite
Tumblr media
Sugilite
Tumblr media
Alexandrite
Tumblr media
And also the diamonds and the cluster.
Tumblr media
Notice how each of the shots these guys are in show off their incredible size. Sugilite can fit on screen beside Pearl and Steven, so we have a direct comparison for size. The others seem even bigger bc the camera angle is looking up at them, sometimes they’re face/body is shadowed to show how they block out light. Most times the camera shakes and there’s a lot of rumbling. The cluster is so large its base is behind the hills in the background, showing how large it is when its so far away. But most important is that they are BY FAR the biggest thing on screen when they are revealed. Even Alexandrite’s introduction was during the dinner scene with Connie’s family, and there she towers over even the building.
But what about Obsidian? Supposedly one of the biggest fusions on the show? The grand finale? The temple gem herself?
She was...not that impressive to me. Which is weird bc we had the recipe:
Tumblr media
A ball of light so big the others had to run away from it. A shaking, rising camera showing multiple arms. A giant foot coming down beside Connie. Going great so far. But then we get this:
Tumblr media
Firstly, the angle is just...off. The camera angle and direction of their heads make it that Lapis and Peridot aren’t looking up, they’re looking straight ahead. Obsidian is tilted backwards, I get that she’s leaning back to roar, but the shot makes her look way smaller. We also saw Obsidian stomp right beside Connie, but now she’s further back, so the sense of distance is also a bit muddled. Then, we get this:
Tumblr media
And all sense of size we did get is immediately destroyed. Obsidian was only the biggest thing on screen for a few seconds. Now she’s mouse-sized in comparison. Her whole battle is scaling a giant humanoid spaceship. The whole fight she is comparatively way smaller than the opponent.
Audiences can only grasp a sense of size through comparisons. It’s why people compare whales to how many buses long they are.
There is one scene in the fight that does convey Obsidian’s size to me, however, and it’s here:
Tumblr media
Not only is Connie tiny in her hand, but that hand is extended out from her. Making her body and face in the bground shadowed would’ve accentuated this distance even more. But again, this is for one second, then back to the main battle where she is tiny. It’s a shame bc I know SU got cut early and they had to rush everything at the end, and Obsidian suffered for it.
I say this bc of the Malachite and Alexandrite fight:
Tumblr media
Now these two are the same size. Even though the island and the watermelon people are smaller, a lot of the shots of the fight are just them. BUT THIS WORKS. And it only works bc this is not the first time we’ve seen these fusions. We already have a sense of their size from their first, individual appearances. Add the camera shakes and the occasional comparison shots to the watermelon people as a reminder and you have two massive gems fighting each other in an awesome showdown.
I think if Obsidian’s first appearance had of been earlier, in a situation where she was the largest thing on screen, where there was time for multiple shots looking upwards at her, then she would’ve seemed far more impressive. Unfortunately we didn’t get an Obsidian-dedicated episode, and there was no time to show her size off properly. Still, it’s interesting to think of what could’ve been.
So, what I’ve learnt is that, when making gigantic things, it’s more than just making it big. It’s camera angles, shadows, rumblings, but more than that. It’s being conscious of how everything else in the shot also contributes. It’s about creating senses of distance and size through what you already have on screen. And I think it’s really neat how all of it comes together to create a perspective of size for the audience.

wwdits tarot: the fool
Well, now that I've finished tarot weekend… time to talk about my WWDITS tarot ideas!
I wrote a couple posts about how I would assign a few of the major arcana if I were making a WWDITS tarot deck, and a few people asked me for my thoughts for the rest of the deck.
And… I’m down! I collect tarot decks and studied tarot in college, so I’m a giant nerd about this shit. I’ll be happy to talk to you about my ideas.
(Just remember that you asked for this.)
Because some of these are fairly complex, I decided to just do one meta post per card so I can talk about both the card symbolism and the character in question. Some are gonna be simple and silly, others will have quite a bit of thought behind them. I'm working off the Rider-Smith-Waite tarot for this, like most decks do, so that's the imagery I'll be discussing.
So uh. Yeah. Let’s get started with 0. The Fool.
(under a cut bc this is long and has images)
You might think I’m going too literal with this one, but I promise everything I’m about to say will make sense when I’m done. For The Fool, I’ve chosen Sean Rinaldi.
You might be thinking I’ve done this because Sean is kind of a dopey character. Foolish, if you will.
NO.
The Fool in tarot is a card of fresh beginnings, innocence, and infinite potential. The imagery is usually of a young man starting out on a journey. He’s young and carefree and naive. He hasn’t had the experience he’ll have soon, and he doesn’t know what’s coming — but he's ready to find out.
Tumblr media
I chose Sean because in many ways, his friendship with the vampires has given him a new lease on life. The Sean we saw at the beginning of 2.03 was tired and irritable. He’d lost a lot of the innocent happiness and optimism he’d had when he was younger, as well as the kindness and affection that had accompanied it. Charmaine pretty much said as much when she talked about what a great guy he’d been when they were dating.
But after getting his brain scramblied, Sean really was able to take fresh new steps into a life he was living as if for the first time. And since then, he’s managed to get new friends, new business opportunities (more… or less…), new adventures, etc. He’s come to love the vampires and be loved in return. He has a great relationship with his wife and his friends. He’s happy, and there’s a sort of carefree spring in his step that suits The Fool well.
Unlike a character like Guillermo, who had infinite potential at the beginning of the series but has already made quite a bit of progress through his journey, Sean still feels fresh, new, and full of possibility. He’s literally pretty foolish and silly, yes, but he’s also just beginning to dip his toes into this supernatural world — and I strongly suspect that he’ll end up in there pretty deep by the end of the series.
There’s also a sense that there’s more to Sean than has been fully revealed, especially regarding his ability to withstand hypnosis, and I think we’re really just starting to see his journey unfold.
He approaches the vampires with friendly naïveté and seems to enjoy new activities — as long as they don’t get too scary. Even though he’s constantly getting into weird, dangerous, and scary situations (like… bankruptcy) he seems to bounce back with an enviable enthusiasm and joy.
In addition to all that, The Fool (archetypally speaking) is a figure that seems silly and naive but has a tendency to be able to see things more keenly than others and is able to speak truth in situations where others aren't allowed. I think Sean slides rather neatly into this as well; not only can he resist hypnosis more and more as the show goes on, sometimes he'll say something remarkably perceptive — and you have to wonder how much he's really picking up on what's going on around him.
(Plus... I just think it’s really funny that the Rider-Waite-Smith card has a little puppy on it and he reacted so very badly to the vampires' “puppy pile”. RIP my sweet cheese, my rotten soldier, my good-time boy.)
So if I were to design a card with Sean... The Fool is usually on a cliff with his bindle, and the imagery reminds me a lot of Sean's look during The Pine Barrens. The gun over his shoulder and the way he's dressed for a journey, a little companion at his side... I think I'd try to adopt some of that imagery but I'd add in some bats for good measure.
Tumblr media
IN CONCLUSION, due to his relationship with the vampires, Sean has become what is essentially a blank slate that is constantly being wiped clean. But he seems happy that way, naive and fresh and thrilled with the world, and his story — his new story — is just getting started.
Tune in next time for The Magician!

Do you think part of the series going forward will be Oz recognizing that he was wrong in some cases when it came to Salem? Bc I don’t think the story will end with just a big fight bc, Ruby as our simple soul protagonist does like to try to talk things out. I can see a scene where she and Salem are in a void space and it’s a lot of talking. It a redemption bc in her quest to free herself Salem did eventually… start killing people on purpose which we can’t really talk away haah. But there can be more than one victim in this kind of situation. While many of Oz were plagued with Salem, your post reiterates that she didn’t start as this evil person. She was trapped and used whatever she could to free herself. It’s hard to call someone pure evil at the time of them being abused which is why I love this show. Bc Salem is the villain of their story but the victim of her own and parts of Oz and all of this can be true at once. I don’t think Oz and Salem will get back together in the end but I wonder how it Will end. Peace for Oz would be Evil Dalem no longer being in the world so his mission to Stop Her would be fulfilled. (A shitty mission considering the god of light didn’t say at the time she was an Evil Immortal bc they literally made her immortal). But what does Salem want. What does Oz Actually want outside of what has been driving him? If Salem came to him eons ago and swore to not hurt anyone would that be enough? Bc he’s trapped here by magical curse to so years of Salem being dormant didn’t lift the curse. What does peace look like for them I wonder. And will the show explore Salem’s side of things and what she’s hoping to do
so
hot take
i don’t think ruby is going to be the inciting force behind any character’s villain -> hero arc, and especially not cinder’s or salem’s; ruby does try to talk things out when she believes her opponent is reasonable, but a) she’s never succeeded, b) she categorically does not engage with salem or salem’s allies as if they are reasonable people, and c) knowing the painful histories that shaped them into the people they are now does not change ruby’s outlook whatsoever, because she’s now had months to think about what jinn showed them and the only conclusion she’s come to is that salem can be stopped because she’s failed before.
i do expect ruby to undergo a shift in her thinking here over the course of v9, but i don’t think it will be as profound as ruby losing her pragmatism altogether. i think she’s just going to come out of this more willing to reserve judgment about whether or not someone needs to be put down by force.
what interests me so much about the potential for both salem and cinder turning around is that all the set-up for it is happening in-house, so to speak, in the changing dynamic of their relationship with each other and the untenable tension between their external goals and inner motivations; moreover rwby has been very clear and very consistent about portraying destruction as a force for change and creation without destruction as static to its own detriment, so thematically there’s solid grounds for thinking the first overture of peace will actually come from SALEM, not ruby or ozma or anyone else on the heroic side. and perhaps worth noting in that regard is that salem has been shown to be much more flexible strategically and operationally and tactically than anyone on the heroic side—so if she gets to a point where negotiating with her opponents looks like a more viable method of pursuing what she wants she’s going to be a lot more willing to scrap her original plans and take a risk on reaching out than they are.
(also i think for ozma there’s a lot more at stake, emotionally, in challenging his basic perceptions of salem—because if she is reasonable, if she is just a person, then he has to start reckoning with questions like “did she actually lie and manipulate me or did i take advantage of her trust?” and “does she maybe have a point about the god i’ve been loyally serving for thousands of years?” and—well just look at how he reacted when confronted after the lost fable. for ozma reconciling with salem means shattering some pretty fundamental beliefs about himself, and i don’t think that’s true for salem. so there’s less of an emotional barrier for her to make the first move.)
there’s also
Tumblr media
this beat from 6.4 which i circle back around to a lot because 1. a lot of what happens in the salem half of this episode is a coda or counterpoint to the way jinn told her story in the preceding episode, and this moment of tangible regret and weariness when the mask drops pretty directly contradicts ozma’s perception (as relayed by jinn) of who salem is; and 2. salem is not happy about the choices she makes. performing for her inner circle the way she does before this beat happens emotionally exhausts her, and she expressly keeps going only because she can’t imagine an alternative path forward and the idea of giving up is intolerable; “and so we must… press on.”
this matters because it suggests the obstacle preventing the resolution of conflict is not that salem is an unreasonable egomaniac or drunk on her own power and acting out violent impulses of pure destruction, as her opponents (and most of the fandom 🙄) believe; it’s that she doesn’t believe she has any other choice, and if we put that into context with everything else we know about her—from the girl who threw pleas for help out of her window and then watched helplessly as hundreds of people died in her name, to being made the divine scapegoat and blamed for the murder of the planet, to her own partner rejecting her without even giving her a chance to explain herself, to thousands of years on the margins of civilization because everyone who knows of her believes she’s either a monster or a god or an unstoppable force of nature—it feels pretty obvious that the reason salem believes that is because no one has ever really listened to her or been there for her, ultimately not even ozma.
and that’s not a problem that any of her opponents are anywhere close to being able to grasp—whereas there is a character standing in the perfect position with the perfect mindset to rekindle salem’s hope, and that character is cinder, and in v8 a major narrative focus was on the… shifting dynamic between salem and cinder… so the set up feels to me very much like it’s headed in that direction.
also something something “even the smallest spark of hope is enough to ignite change, breathe fire into the hearts of the weary,” something something cinder is the key to salem’s victory, something something, uh, a cinder is a spark and—
Tumblr media Tumblr media
—the writing is on the wall yeah?
anyway rwby’s approach to villain -> hero arcs generally is not redemptive in nature but rather centered around atonement, and within that framework it is obviously more important to allow salem (and cinder) to be in situations where they are no longer killing people than it is to punish or forgive them for having killed people in the past; the dead cannot be saved but the future can be made better and safer for the living. emerald has also killed people but when she jumped ship the trajectory was towards integrating her into the group as an ally, not on interrogating her past misdeeds. (that said i half expect for salem’s villain -> hero arc to involve some revelations that she is not, in fact, as heinous as she has been made out to be—specifically i think summer is alive and working for salem fully in possession of her free will and that salem’s attention and efforts since the murderdivorce have largely been focused on working out a viable plan to tackle the gods rather than 24/7 conspiring against ozma.)
which is to say i think that once the immediate problem of salem’s resignation is overcome the turnaround will occur pretty fast, and likewise on the heroic side once initial reservations about whether they can trust her offer of truce are overcome the narrative focus will move swiftly to making the new alliance work vs redressing all of the bloodshed.
i do also want to highlight though that ozma’s mandate is not to stop salem—that’s something he began to fixate on as a goal, but what he’s actually supposed to be doing is uniting humanity in service of the god of light and then ushering in the day of judgment so that humankind can be either restored to wholeness in the eyes of the gods or exterminated once and for all. irrespective of whether or not salem made an oath of pacifism or not, she would still stand in the way of the mandate because she hates the gods. her violence isn’t the problem for ozma’s agenda—her defiance is. in the course of negotiating peace he will have to finally confront that and reject the divine mandate altogether, and i’m quite certain that that’s what will happen because rwby has, um, not been subtle about the god of light being the true villain of the piece. i’ve said this before but salem’s villain -> hero arc is also an ozma apostasy arc, you can’t have one without the other.
(my read on ozma generally is that he… knows that, deep down, and he’s been trying desperately not to look at it for thousands of years because he’s terrified of what it would mean to admit that salem is right in her view of the god he serves.)
as for what he actually wants… i mean, we know that. he wants to be with salem. that’s the whole reason he came back, and then he felt obligated to keep his word and tried for years to do both by deceiving salem about what he truly intended to accomplish, with catastrophic results, and… since then he’s spent lifetimes convincing himself that everything bad that happens to him is because salem is pulling the strings and the school he built was an exact replica of the castle he rescued her from when they first met and his office was in her bedroom akdhfnsg like he is completely obsessed with her. whether he still wants to be with her romantically is an open question but given the tone of until the end i wouldn’t exactly be surprised; at the very least i think in his heart of hearts he wants to be at peace with her and freed from the burden of the mandate (+reincarnation curse) preventing that from happening.

I understand that Nick is now working on something else and promoting something else and it's absolutely normal that he can't talk during his promo and focus only on a film that he has made, I absolutely did not share the drama of these days however I also don't understand the whole "he doesn't owe us anything, he's busy" for the possibility that he doesn't post it of the vote like others.
Yes, ok I understand everything but it always seems like everyone has this idea of Nick too far gone now and couldn't even take a second to post a single story for the nomination for a movie that HE MADE and I'm not even saying I want to see him do it or that he has to do it at any cost, he probably won't but it's weird to see how with Taylor they are all "oh look he loves the film so much he, like us, can't let it go" but for Nick even if people just "hopes" to see only a story they are like "stop, he doesn't owe us anything he has other things to think now"
>For context, this ask has been sent after Taylor shared stories about the vote for the glaad awards but before the The Awardist Podcast.>
I’m so sorry I’ve been a bit slow to answer to that. By the time I had time to answer, the podcast happened and I wanted to stay in that mood for a bit, then I have been so very tired and now that I’m a bit rested, I’ve been trying to find a way to answer to you.
I’m not exactly sure what you’re saying exactly actually. It’s not a criticism, I just don’t know where to start my answer.
As for the specific exemple of the vote for the glaad awards (vote!!!), I’m sure everybody has noticed by now that Bottoms is also nominated so it’s difficult for Nick to say anything about either. Even asking to vote for both is counter-productive as it will be only one winner so not to say anything looks like the best solution for me.
Like you, I think the idea of Nick being "too far gone" for RWRB is absolutely ridiculous.
And even if Taylor not letting go of the movie is more positively oriented, he’s doing almost nothing out of the ordinary. Walking the award circuit as a lead of a movie with a chance to get nomination is very normal (whining bc you can’t sign books while being drunk is less common, but that just makes him even more special 💜).
I’m still not sure where I’m going with this answer but I’m going to keep writing until I feel like it’s coherent enough.
It’s tricky to react to what you say without context or knowing the people who are saying these things. The Internet these days is a lot about overreacting and what could have been a meaningless joke or thought at start can become heavy with repetition and numbers. Like reading "he can’t let go of the movie" is cute the first time but maybe feels a bit more like he's being desperate the hundredth time. "He has other things to do" sounds normal the first time but maybe too close to "he doesn’t care" the hundredth. But the reality hasn’t changed in the meantime, they both still have very normal behavior doing what they’re doing as actor. What I’m trying to say is that it’s fandom stuff happening inside the fandom and to fans mostly and it's mostly about perception. (Am I making any sense? (no))
I also feel like a part of that can be related to expectations (and too many of them) inside a fandom and fans wanting to preserve of protect their actor from it. Expectations, whether they’re expressed on a corner on the Internet or directly to famous people in DMs, often creates frustration and disappointment on the long run. For example, I don’t share most of the asks only waiting or asking for news on Taylor’s next project anymore. There’s nothing wrong with them and I get they come from a place of support but I feel like it would start to sound weird at some point. We’ll know when we’ll know and he’ll tell the story if he feels like it.
I had the same feeling with an ask that were mentioning a semi-hope for Taylor to share something on Alex’s birthday. I thought it was unlikely but I didn’t want to piss on someone’s else fun. But I didn’t want to entertain something I didn’t believe in either (firstly, because I hate lies but mostly because) I didn’t want to create or nourish an expectation that would most likely end up in frustration or disappointment for people reading. So I ended up not posting it at all.
All of that to say that sometimes maybe the "he doesn’t owe us anything" comes from a similar place than that, only in a harsher way to say it.
None of this is actually coherent but if I’m not posting now I’m going to end up deleting everything so let’s not do that. If I’ve completely missed the point of your original message, please say so? I don’t know 😅

HEY @kyliebyelie I had a weird couplea weeks but I did say I would yell about Nureyev and Vespa some more so *launches enrichment pumpkins*
also OG post thread for anyone who wants context it was just getting a little unwieldy
First off! re: Nureyev still being willing to bet on the hope that Juno would still vouch for him – I’ve also been thinking about how he had to be willing to bet that it wouldn’t backfire on Juno. Like, ‘you have no idea how much I did to keep the Kanagawas off you’. The fact that tying Juno’s name to his own work could have very easily painted a target on him. Even if he couldn’t have known that Buddy and Jet were going to pull a ‘come with me if you want to live’, the fact that he put Juno on their radar suggests that he trusted Buddy to begin with. To not threaten Juno, or to use Juno to threaten Nureyev. Jet talks about how the criminal reputation informs a potential employer that their prospective is reliable, but it also must work in reverse – that a potential boss won’t screw you over.
re: Nureyev being a fan is something I think about A Normal Amount
You’ve absolutely nailed the whole vibe of their communication styles, the chain reaction of politeness/rudeness → perception of emotions and control → measurement of honesty → how that exacerbates the friction, like that is such a good breakdown goddamn.
to add to that since I am constantly frothing like the cappuccino about the concept of 'solid coping mechanisms that backfire in the wrong situations' so for your consideration: one of those pesky little first rules of thieving being 'don’t rise to the bait’. Oh it was intended for Being In Situations with weird rich people or standoffs with other criminals, but when it's his default setting for responding to things, it's just gonna just drive the wedge that much further every time Vespa questions his integrity and he doesn't show where he keeps his Give A Damn. (And it's probably even harder to untangle as a 'no that's for jobs not your personal life' thing when it still has its legitimate applications in his personal life, bc Juno’s own survival reflex MO is ‘how fast can I piss somebody off to find out what I need to know’ and that ability to stay focused and letting him know when that's uncalled for is probably extremely necessary for the both of them)
‘Vespa is terrifying’ – okay so funnily enough! i'd been telling @one-joe-spoopy (pssst hey come look I've got enrichment pumpkins!) about my headcanon of 'ranked order of members of the Carte Blanche crew by how much they scare him and why number one hands down goes to Rita,' which is a whole post in itself but long story short, I think out of everybody he gets the most sense of security around Vespa (though she probably still does terrify him, like, a normal amount and for the exact reasons you described, especially pre/during Man In Glass.)
Basically the concept I’ve been toying with (and I think moreso in a later, probably post-Cyberbots context given some time to settle in) is that her opinion of him is decided and earning her approval under the circumstances is What We Call A Non-Starter. When he's reflexively trying to manage everyone's expectations and invested in their approval, and realizes in no uncertain terms that he can't win Vespa over as long as the name thing is a going concern, the pressure’s off a bit there. Though not in the healthiest of ways, necessarily, if he’s just more comfortable with letting her believe what she wants about him because that’s how he usually deals with people.
And another aspect of this sense of security dovetails with your previous points about how Vespa and Juno are more reactive than performative, how they wear their principles on their sleeves and others recognize them as genuine. I bet Nureyev absolutely knows better than to make the comparison in her earshot, but I can see him just sorta unable to help liking her for the same reasons he’s drawn to Juno – he can brush off a little belligerence from someone whose integrity speaks for itself. Vespa abides by her own codes as well as visibly aligning herself with Buddy’s – she’s pissed about not knowing his name but won’t coerce it out of him even when the requisite leverage is right there – and like you said, she would be insulted by the idea of using underhanded means to get him fired. He knows where he stands and possibly figures that trying too hard to fix it is just going to piss her off further. And it's not like he's gonna stop being dramatic and making his gay little jokes and smooching Juno in the mess hall, he just needs to focus on comporting himself as a reliable crewmember and establishing himself the hard way with time and Buddy's family bonding activities (and yeag he wants to Get A Good Grade In Crewmate which is Normal To Want and Possible To Achieve).
oooh also I’m a little fucked up on the idea of him on bedrest with his broken leg and getting filled in on what he missed during Shadows, realizing that Vespa thinks he’s got it in for her right around the same time he’s having an epiphany that he trusts her to keep him alive and patched up even if she never likes him as a person and that the shapeshifting robot impostors don't stand a chance with her around. like not only is she not the thief she was twenty years ago, she's even tougher and smarter and cooler and doing it all with the brain horrors on top.
ALSO in light of Next Page I now think about ‘hey what if he’s Inherently Suspicious of Medical Personnel due to The Trauma and did he spend a bunch of his broken leg recovery time fretting that she was going to try to wring his name out of him while he was on painkillers only she never does??’ (god there’s this one fic where he and Juno get MacGuffined into kids and she’s like. ‘well shit. yeah I could find it out but goddamn. that’s a line I just can’t cross. Not Looking At It I Do Not See It’)
gah it's just. Nureyev's trust issues are so goddamn multifaceted, like. local baby boy too trusting, gets his only security ripped out from under him, tanks his shot at happiness bc the trauma gave him suspicion, becomes the suavest charlatan in the galaxy so he doesn't get taken advantage of again, craves genuine connection but hasn't actually had a chance in the last two decades to figure out what he's like around other people for any stretch of time, also still literally paying the price for the last time and can hardly bear the thought of confiding in his new connections because there's nowhere truly safe in the galaxy he's terrified of putting a target on them.
But I think about his little 'much more so than usual these days' to Juno's sarcastic 'happy now??' and that maybe he was a lot closer to an honest version of himself on the Carte Blanche. That he was getting places, that he was trusting them with as much as he could. something something 'Peter Ransom' wasn't intended for putting at least half the truth under their noses the whole time but he kinda let it turn into that the moment he let Buddy start calling him Pete.
Handful of miscellaneous thoughts on things they have in common:
- the debts thing. Vespa of all people is the most painfully, intimately aware of what it feels like to have a life that isn't one's own, so the way she approaches Nureyev being in massive scary debt with suspicion made me go huh. so I've been thinking about that one and tbh given how she internalizes shit and doesn't entirely trust herself (and god I have to imagine that she's really messed up about how close she came to killing Buddy in Time Gone By), I think seeing her situation in Nureyev's wouldn't engender sympathy because is that because she also knows exactly what she was prepared to do to get out from under it. and is just expected to tolerate the fact that they're taking their goddamn chances on him. there's this sense of 'even if he cares. even if he thinks this is real. even if he tells himself he wants to be a part of this. who's he gonna be when push comes to shove. probably not even Steel is safe.'
- They are both extremely functional under pressure and in more in their element in full on crisis mode, and are probably spending S3 figuring out what the hell to do now that they have access to things like reliable meals. privacy. affection. (pretty sure Juno is also experiencing a similar kind of 'things... getting better? after being. really bad all the time???' and having a lot of midmorning scuffles about it)
- Also they both have their shitty dads living in their brains rent-free!! and they are never ever going to talk about it but one (1) time Nureyev hears Vespa yell 'shut the hell up old man!' from another room and. sometimes thinks that very hard in her voice when Mag's advice is being unhelpful
re: feral kittens in towels - I want them to get into it that day after Heart of It All where Juno isn't getting out of bed and isn't there to get all protective, and for once she's in a half-decent place brainwise and he's riddled with eight kinds of guilt and half on the edge of a nervous breakdown and having all of his defenses shot is actually a good thing for him because she's not actually going to do anything with the upper hand except cuss him out a little bit. Like 'I was gonna cut your throat without hesitation yesterday and you're all fine and dandy about being in the wedding party? no shut up I'm not saying you can't. it's whatever. Bud thought it would be nice and I'm not against it. I am saying. the fuck is wrong with you.' hurt can sniff out hurt in-fucking-deed. I am dying inside like the fact that Nureyev himself would prevent any closure we might have gotten between him and the Lighthouse Crew after S4 is very him and also it hurts me and I need to pick it all apart with a seam ripper and see what spills out
likewise it’s hard to picture them ever reaching an actual rapport but I can’t even tell you how many times I pictured the prison break with all of them converging before Clean Break aired, where it’s like finally sunk in that he’s on their side and she goes ‘Ransom watch my goddamn back I need to kiss my wife’
also. does anybody want. some fic? I have some job interview/Man In Glass missing scenes where i am gnawing on this at all times

it makes me so sad and frankly enraged to see video after video of ppl saying they cannot mentally emotionally or physically meet the demands of late stage capitalism, that no one makes enough money from one job to eat healthily and to have time to themselves, to survive! that other generations had is so much easier.
it reminds me of my aural reading earlier this week where it showed that my third eye was so active and so potent. that i have the knowledge but i haven’t internalized in into the rest of my chakras, like the other parts of me have to catch up still.
i just get the sense that it’s long been general knowledge throughout the working class that something is deeply deeply wrong. that things are exploitative and unsustainable. i can’t help but feel like we are on the precipice of real meaningful change but i also can’t shake the feeling that we have been on this precipice for some time. the age of aquarius that we’re in is favorable for revolution, that’s what i’ve read anyways.
some days feel more hopeless than others. wars and climate change are not to be taken lightly. people being kicked out of their homes bc of price gouging is not a normal circumstance. it’s inhumane. it’s cruel. its unacceptable.
the internet is like a massive vacuum, a window to one perception of the world, but it’s a massive window. so big people forget that it’s part of the larger world. but i don’t blame ppl for feeling as if this is all there is. our psyches have been hijacked for profit.
but there’s still things worth fighting for in this life. going outside and feeling more like yourself is not something to take for granted. that sun on ur skin or the breeze in ur hair. all the kids and animals who innocently inhabit this world along with us. even having a really good stretch makes life feel worth living lol. think about how good it feels to be close with your loved ones, spending time with them feels rejuvenating and inspiring. kissing, laughing, listening, and creating memories. that’s where hope is! and on the days we do feel hopeful, we have to hold even tighter to it. savor it. immortalize it somewhere time or circumstance can’t touch it. hope is hardly enough on its own but without it there’s no future.
