I do think it's a little :/ that someone who says they don't follow Japanese politics closely is essentially framing their guesswork as 'fact' when we don't know anything about the suspect?

I do think the situation needs to be observed, but like. The thread op literally said 1) they don't follow Japanese politics closely and 2) I think it's too early to tell anything concrete? All we know about the suspect Yamagami Tetsuya so far is that they're 41 y/o and was part of the JMSDF in 2002-2005, so there's no evidence as of 7/8/2022 20:20 (GMT+8) that his identity will incite mass violent anti-Korean sentiments imo

The situation deserves close observation. i agree that right-wing ideology will be on the rise, and we do have to watch out for that, but imo it's too soon to say anything concrete about imperialism (also... there can be multiple imperialists under different ideologies).

Japan Court Rules Trans Man Can Change Gender Marker Without Surgery

A Japanese court this week approved a transgender man’s legal gender change without first requiring sterilization, marking a major step forward for trans rights in the country. Takakito Usui, 50, won recognition of his gender before the Okayama Family Court’s Tsuyama branch on Wednesday. “I want to thank my family. I feel a new life is beginning,” Usui, a farmer living in the rural Yamagata Prefecture, said at a press conference on Wednesday following the ruling. Usui previously petitioned to change his legal gender in 2016, the paper noted, but was rejected because he had not been medically sterilized, as was then required under Japanese law. In October, Japan’s Supreme Court struck down the 2003 statute requiring trans people to be sterilized before obtaining legal recognition.

In 1868, fearing a repeat of China's fate at the hands of Western imperialists, reformers overthrew the military dictatorship of the Tokugawa Shogunate and set Japan on a course of high-speed industrialisation.

But the Meiji restoration, as it's known, was no storming of the Bastille. It was an elite putsch. Even after a second convulsion of 1945, the "great" families survived. This overwhelmingly male ruling class is defined by nationalism and a conviction that Japan is special. They do not believe Japan was the aggressor in the war, but its victim.

I also just learned Reiwa Shinsengumi is a progressive, left-wing party founded in 2019. They are anti-establishment, anti-nuclear, and support minority rights. They also want to raise the minimum wage, implement laws protecting free education, disability rights, LGBTQ rights, to name a few. I just did a little research, and by no means is this encompassing but I hope to learn more.
