This is an oddly specific thing, but learning more about the culture war that took place in Poland where JPII + others resisted the Nazis and the Soviets by keeping Polish literature, language, and faith alive motivates me to continue pursuing the Irish language. Keeping Gaeilge alive is not a pointless pastime but a continued resistance to the destruction and Anglicisation of Irish culture. And, given that that culture is deeply rooted in the Church, I firmly believe it will be an instrumental way to keep the Catholic faith alive in the nation where she flourished so beautifully for hundreds of years. Gaeilge go brách, a chairde.

So one of my genuine opinions is that the statues of superior papież John Paul II in Poznań and president Stefan Starzyński in Warsaw should go to the Met Gala together

Boxing Day Boxers: Part 5 – Lancia Gamma Spider, 1978. Lancia's pushrod flat-4 alloy engine had been around since 1960 and was re-engineered with overhead cams in 2.0 and 2.5 litre forms for the Gamma in 1976. The boxer-engined Gamma Coupé was designed by Pininfarina who followed it with a T-roof version that had a removable rear window. The Spider did not advance beyond prototype stage but it was used the early 1980s by Pope John Paul II when he toured North Italy

#OTD in 1995 – In a constitutional vote, a tiny majority vote to revoke the ban on divorce in Ireland.
Ireland voted narrowly to lift the ban on divorce enshrined in its constitution for more than half a century. Results tallied from a nationwide referendum showed that 50.3 percent of voters favoured removing the prohibition, placed in the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic republic’s founding charter in 1937 in conformity with church doctrine. While the losers spoke of a possible court challenge, they…

Alone
(for someone who needs to hear this again)
It’s bad. And it’s only going to get worse.
Sometimes, that’s how life can feel for us. Whether the roof’s actually caving in on us, or we’re just getting beat down by the petty setbacks of life. Whether it’s the one big thing, or thousands of little things that keep piling up, really doesn’t matter much.
Because when life feels like that – no matter how we got there – it’s easy to get tunnel vision, to get stuck. To feel like we’re all alone.
And either end up in despair. Because it’s just too much for us to handle.
Or feel like we have to do it all ourselves. And finding out the hard way that we literally can’t.
Either way, we end up in the same place. Feeling worried. Overwhelmed. Burned out. Alone.
All because we’re making it harder on ourselves than it has to be. By trying to do something that we were never meant to do. By trying to do it on our own.
So what’s the alternative? What were we meant to do?
It’s simple. So simple that it’s easy to miss. In the middle of all of the setbacks and just busyness of life.
Even in today’s Gospel. It’s easy to miss. In the middle of all of the bad things that Jesus talks about.
You and I were never meant to go through life feeling abandoned and stuck.
You and I were never meant to do it alone.
But sometimes, that is what it feels like. Like we are one our own.
Actually, that feeling that we are alone? That’s the great lie that being overwhelmed tells us.
But no matter how loud that lie is. No matter how strong that feeling is. No matter what it feels like. It cannot change the simple reality that God will never abandon you.
Even when you can’t feel it, God is still there.
In the words of Pope St. John Paul II, “Remember that you are never alone. Christ is with you on your journey every day of your life!
He has called you and chosen you to live in the freedom of the children of God.
Turn to Him in prayer and in love. Ask Him to grant you the courage and strength to live in this freedom always.”

Polish Papal Cream Cake (Kremówka Papieska) (recipe in Polish)
Kremówka was a favorite treat of Poland’s beloved Pope John Paul II. On June 16, 1999, when visiting his hometown John Paul II shared with people a beautiful memory: “And there was a cake shop. After the final exam in high school, we went for kremówkas. [To celebrate] That we survived, those kremówkas after the exams...” They wagered who could eat more. The future Pope ate eighteen kremówkas but did not win the bet. His speech was publicized by the media and since then this pastry has been called Papieska Kremówka (papal kremówka) from Wadowice, and became very popular in Poland.

Everyone's favorite Polish pope is here to polish things up!
The idea for a wallpaper based on Pope St. John Paul II was suggested by Robert Rodriguez over at Patreon.com/Tomics.  Thanks for reminding me of his feast day!
___
JOKE-OGRAPHY: 1. This wallpaper is based on "Die Hard 2: Die Harder".  For some reason I thought it'd be funny to treat the number after a pope's name like a movie sequel number.  I won't be made to explain myself further. 2. The tagline makes a pun out of the word "Polish", which can either refer to a product used for cleaning and restoring surfaces (as in "shoe polish") or to people hailing from Poland (as in, "When my Polish great-grandfather built this house, he put all the light switches on the far side rooms, so I have to go stumbling through pitch darkness whenever I need to turn on lights.")  Pope St. John Paul II was Polish... in the latter sense.

Mamy to! Udało nam się skleić pierwszego zina. Trochę zajęło nam to wszystko ale cieszę się że chociaż jednego doprowadziliśmy do końca. Nie żeby cokolwiek tutaj miało sens. Prędzej to manifest futurystyczny.

So we’re having a nation-wide drama in Poland because two independent jurnalist investigations have brought to light new evidence that John Paul II had been personally covering paedophilia cases in the church. Conservatives in the Parliment have passed a bill reafirming that he was the greatest Pole who ever lived, all the government-controlled media are spewing out callouts on the TV station whose journalist conducted one of those investigation for being established by (dead by now) people who worked for the communist regime some three decades ago, and the main news service in the state TV is now indefinitely going to end with a few minutes of excerpts from the pope’s sermons everyday.
Anyway, I thought of this work of art:

For the context, this beauty is made of melted figurines, medallions etc. of John Paul II.
