15 Romance Books with the Found Family Trope
Whether it’s a friend group that started to feel like family, a grumpy hero finding love with a single mom, an unexpected guardian, or a welcoming small town community, the found family trope can be utilized in romance novels in a variety of ways. It’s generally a heartwarming trope with warm and fuzzy vibes, making the reader smile at that feeling of inclusion and love. Though the journey to get…

This is going to be a somewhat chaotic PJOseries review so bare with me
I might do edits to add some of my observations I missed so... Yeah. Prepare for that. And it will def be spoilery
Okay I just watched the first two episodes of @percyseries and this is actually a fresh take and a great adaptation that is of its own just like The Lightning Thief Musical. Most of the decisions of changes they made actually make sense for a show adaptation.
Tumblr media
Anyway possible spoilers alert ahead so
Don't say I didn't warn you!
Ep 1 : I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher
Off to a good start. I love how they opened this with flashbacks when Percy was young and how he's struggling with ADHD.
Anyway like I said first and foremost, this isn't really a word by word (word for word? grammatically correct me, anyone, if I were wrong) adaptation. So there will be conversations which I've memorized from the book that will completely get cut, but will be replaced by lines that do not really stray away that much from the essence of the scenes.
Walker embodies Percy Jackson if he were to be born a Gen Z ( well I always considered Percy as a Milennial reading the book as I grew up so ). Obviously, he's still got that charm from his previous movies he starred in. No wonder at all why Uncle Rick entrusted him this role.
Tbh, I only had an issue with Mrs. Dodd's facial appearance. It looked like the CGI on her was unfinished. But the way she strut towards Percy while transforming into a Fury is *chef's kiss*
Even if it's unintentional messaging, I love how it's viewed that these people are also just so unaware and inattentive with their surroundings. (yeah the Mist does all that, Yada Yada but it kinda gave a spotlight on the perspective of an ADHD how they can also be frustrated when people around them don't notice what they see)
And I definitely think that they need to bring back the actor who played Nancy and cast her as Rachel in Season 3. I mean, no one would even notice she's the same actor as Nancy only appeared a brief amount of time.
Sally telling Percy that he's a Half-Blood was so unexpected but it made sense during that scene. The poor kid is going through an existential crisis. She's gotta give her son a break.
Tumblr media
Also, I kinda see how that is the very reason why the minotaur found them as soon as he can, if it's still canon in here that the more a demigod know about their connection to Greek mythological stuff, the more monsters they attract and can sense them, and will come for them!
I dunno if it's just me, but the scene when the Minotaur was supposed to be chasing them kinda didn't leave an impression on me that there is some sort of danger looming? I guess part of that is because Pasiphae's son looked too cute? But the scene when Percy went for a bullride is definitely one heck of a heroic moment!
Ep 2 : I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom
Tumblr media
Mr. D is... a troll. Lol. No. I mean, I def laughed when he played Percy like that. If Jason actually watched Stanley Tucci's take on this role in the Sea of Monsters movie, I think he's actually the continuation of that. It is nothing that I expected from Dionysus reading the book but I can love this take tho.
Tumblr media
Chiron is too kind in here. I guess it's the actor's nature emanating in this role. I kinda expected him to be also somehow stern and disappointed at times, and not too cheerful. But with that said, he's definitely the camp director you'd be visiting much so making him more approachable along those reasoning made him a perfect fit!
Tumblr media
Tbh, kinda missing a lot of Annabeth content since her role in introducing the camp to Percy has been filled mostly by Luke.
Tumblr media
I guess we can see more of her in the episodes that follow which is why they took that direction. I mean, I def agree that we gotta give some more screen time to Luke.
Tumblr media
Clarisse and her siblings are ... Probably how Gen Z bullies would act right now, I guess?
Tumblr media
And focusing on Grover's whereabouts actually is the cherry I love from this show.
Tumblr media
I definitely want the Capture the Flag to occur at night just like in the books (which is also one of the many complaints I have with the movies tbfh), because I feel the scene when Percy was claimed would've been more "atmospheric" with the glowing trident hovering above his head in the dark surroundings... but I guess there are some issues behind the camera that that will be a very tricky so I guess I'll just let this pass.
Prediction for that Ep 3 Preview
With the scene when Sally, and younger Percy talked about how not all who look like heroes are actually heroes, the same goes with monsters, whilst looking at the statue of his namesake holding Medusa's head;
Tumblr media
Why do I think that Aunty Em wouldn't be viewed as antagonistic here? I mean, judging from the preview of the next ep, I kinda sense a vibe that she'll willingly offer her head to Percy and somehow tell a different tale from the story that we know about the gorgons?
This is just me, I'll definitely discard this once I'm proven wrong by the show (or not) but even so, I think that is actually a change I can accept also to further the message of
"Not those who look like monsters are amonsters"
Conclusion
Obviously there are complete changes they've done; from the casting alone, and also some specific conceptual description from the books that were somehow intentionally decided that they'd do the opposite, for instance: like what I've mentioned above, playing capture at day instead of night, Chiron's a black stallion from the waist down instead of white, Mr D not looking like a hubbub (erm cherub), Smelly Gabe not being that quite bald, and the fandom's issue with the hair and all that, those things considered that are superficial that even if you completely stray away from it, there won't be that much change at all...but like what I've also said, this is a fresh take and an adaptation that stands on its own just like The Lightning Thief Musical.
Tbh, if you're watching this show without having read the book at all, I'll say this that this is very distinguishable from it, judging by the two episodes alone. It is faithful with the essence but there are details that are only physically manifested from the book which they absolutely turn a 360. You can absolutely say that you're not required to read the series before watching this at all, but I will aso advise that you read it to know what I mean.
Also I can say that at times, I can also pick up some cinematic vibes similar with the hated Peter Johnson movies by most of the fandom, and I can't also help but cry over cartons of spilled milk with those movies are, because they definitely had the potential to be great, but it had all gone into waste!
Those movies could've been what this series is if only they honored the books faithfully beforehand. Such a waste for fans like me who have to wait for this day before getting this kind of adaptation but hey! What's important is now, and RIGHT NOW THANK di Immortales THAT uncle Rick is very much involved!

My thoughts on episode 1 and 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: (spoilers)
- The ACCURACY of the little Percy casting was unbelievable. They look identical.
- The SARCASM 🫶🏻👌🏻
- I’ve never been able to connect with Sally Jackson as a mother-figure in the books just because of my own rocky relationship with my mom, but the way she’s played really made me believe in her character and her love for Percy. It gives PERCY’s character more grounding and their relationship really drives the show.
- Sally just sitting in the rain with Olivia Rodrigo playing. Mood.
- “You fell in love…with Jesus?”
- The friction and “betrayal” between Percy and Grover was super interesting to see and I’m really glad they touched on that more than in the books
- I’ve been pronouncing Brunner wrong. Dam.
- Sally saying goodbye to Percy, knowing she was probably going to die 😭. Percy screaming for her.
- the Minotaur fight was awesome
- “YOU DROOL WHEN YOU SLEEP” Omg I can’t believe she said it. Leah’s delivery was different than how I imagined it but I loved it. She’s so matter-of-fact
- Again, I’ve always struggled with connecting with Luke’s character just because I felt like he was a little two-dimensional in the first book and then after that, you know, he’s evil and while I understood his motivations, I just didn’t really…care? Idk but his portrayal really helped me understand the depth of his betrayal and just how heartbreaking his story really is. I already love him more than I’ve allowed myself to from the books
- “She’s my little sister” I love their relationship while it lasts. Seeing how close they are really adds to the layers of both of their characters
- I’ve also been pronouncing Thalia wrong. Double dam.
- THE BLUE CANDY. PERCY BURNING IT NOT TO TALK TO HIS DAD BUT HIS MOM. That scene broke my heart.
- Leah. As. Annabeth. I’m going to be completely honest, Ive loved Leah from everything I’ve seen about her but I was nervous just because of how precious of a character Annabeth Chase has always been to me and I didn’t know if ANYONE, not specifically Leah, could live up to those expectations but omg I love her. Her bluntness. Her facial expressions. Her voice and delivery. Her sure movements and confidence and self-assuredbess that has come from success after success and training for so long. The way she is so unashamed to admit to using Percy and only watching him to see what he could do for HER. In her short amount of screen time so far, Leah was able to add layers to this character I’ve loved for so long that I didn’t even know where there. I never wanted her to leave the screen. My only complaint is that she didn’t have more lines. She is my Annabeth Chase. She’s not from the books. She’s not from the movies. She’s her own version and she stole the show.
- Luke saying Annabeth has a plan and that Percy will know what to do, only for PERCY TO BE FLOSSING AND PEEING AND PETTING GECKOS and trying so hard not to drive himself crazy with his ADHD and having nothing to do. I genuinely laughed out loud. Might be my favorite part.
- the fight scenes are so well choreographed.
- CLARISSE. She’s too pretty. I can’t hate her. And her ELECTRIC SPEAR. When it broke and she screamed, I got chills.
- The trident.
- Annabeth KNOWING Percy was Poseidon’s before anyone else cause she’s “always 6 steps ahead”
- People already keeping such important info from Percy “for his own good”
- “You are Poseidon’s son” “No, I am Sally Jackson’s son!” Might just be my favorite line. It’s so true. She raised him. She sacrificed everything for him. She loved him and cared for him and taught him that he wasn’t broken, he was singular, a miracle. She died so that he could live.
- Sally Jackson is parenting goals
- The way Percy instantly changed his decision to go to the underworld as soon as Grover told him his mom could be saved. Their relationship is unmatched
- Walker Scobell is already pretty well known, but I have a really good feeling his popularity is going to skyrocket after this show. He is such an amazing, dedicated actor. I know exactly what he is felling 100% of the time.
Overall, I absolutely loved it. In two episodes it’s become a comfort show that I can’t wait to continue watching!!

UNFILTERED REACTIONS TO PJO SHOW EPISODE 2: yes, spoilers. No, coherence.
“Where am I?”
“You drool when you sleep”
“Huh?”
Perfect. Relationship encapsulated.
Mr D with his Diet Coke his tiger shirt and his pinochle cards??? I am THRIVING
“Yeah Grover. I heard him the first time”
“But did you?” PERSASSY
“I think I can help you with that…. SON”
“DAD?”
HAHAHAHA MR D YOU ABSOLUTE DICK HAHAHAHAHAHA
Mr Brunner why is there a horse in your pants??
“You’re a horse, my father won’t talk to me unless I get him a drink-“
“NOPE. NO. NOT YOUR DAD”
“I could be”
“Yes but are you?”
“Why must you ruin everything?”
Dynamic between Chiron and Dionysus captured perfectly. Amazing.
“Hermes. God of travellers. Home to both his children and the unclaimed” PAY YOUR CHILD SUPPORT.
Percy not wanting Chiron to call attention to him and not even looking at anyone when he’s introduced and the awkward wave oh baby boiii
PERCY’S INSTINCTUAL JUMP UP AT SEEING PEOPLE APPROACH HIM AND DOING THE WHOLE “if you wanna beat me up do it tomorrow” oh sweetieeee
AND ALSO LUKE. THATS LUKE. LUKE SIR
Mannn he’s so young man. Makes Percy look even youngerrr. Mannnnnn.
Council of Cloven Elders???
THE BEACONS OF MINAS TIRITH HAVE BEEN LIT. GONDOR CALLS FOR AID.
Is this Kronos?? Bc he’s crusty as shit.
Not Luke talking about glory like Zuko talks about honour. Except Luke has the opposite arc to Zuke. Ahhhhh.
But also Percy “pay your child support” Jackson really already questioning why it’s ok that they get brought to camp and get ignored.
Canonical Percy can’t shoot an arrow at allll.
WAS THAT CHARLIE???
“I made some real friends”
GROVER IS YOUR REAL FRIEND. GROVERRR.
“Ignoring me is one thing but he doesn’t get to ignore you” PERCY “SON OF SALLY” JACKSON
ANNABETHHH.
Supreme Lord of the Bathroom. How can you not know Percy. That was three streams of water.
“Oh hers, always. She’s my little sister”
*deep inhale* *internal screaming*
“Annabeth is the strongest warrior in our camp”
*deep inhale* *more internal screaming*
The absolute respect and love Luke has for Annabeth has me frothing at the mouth. The potentially retroactive erasure of Annabeth’s crush on Luke??? The hopefully retroactive elimination of any weird romantic undertones on their relationship ESPECIALLY TOWARDS THE END???
“Not you sunshine, you’re with me”
Not sunshine, he’s- SHE CANT CALL HIM SEAWEED BRAIN YET
“Percy’s gonna be ready, I know it”
Percy: slowly and lazily flossing. Takes a leak in the woods. Strokes a lizard. Lies down with his eyes closed.
Baby you are a Seaweed Brain.
SON OF THE SEA GOD BABY.
Leah is an amazing Annabeth. Just the curt “yes” for all his questions XD like yeah I wanted to see how you would hold up. Why would I help?
And then shoved him in the water.
But dude that trident was freaking huge. I always thought it was a small lil symbol not a to-scale trident XD
But also we did not get to sit in the reveal for very long before we’re jumping to some exposition.
“Poseidon has ignored me my whole life”
“You are his son”
“I’m Sally Jackson’s son!”
YES YOU ARE
Grover I appreciate you. You are such best boi.
AHHHHHH

My FAVORITE book this month has been Camera Shy by Kay Cove. It was SO CUTE!!! Chubby girl rep, self esteem healing, lots of steamy sex. The FMC gets broken up with and ends up house sitting for one of her clients. She ends up meeting the neighbor and he is VERY hot. She offers to help him with his business strategies (he’s a photographer and does boudoir shoots!) and she wants him to teach her to be good at sex. ITS AMAZING!!!!

Blurb:
I’m not the hero in this story.
I’m the villain...
The notoriously angry, grouchy, D.C. Eagles defenseman that just can’t keep his temper in check. The temper that leads to a fifteen game suspension from the NHL.
As if that’s not bad enough, I'm forced into a short term youth-hockey coaching gig. Which my manager swears will “rebuild my image.”
But what I didn’t expect was for a gorgeous, spunky blonde to stomp onto the ice on day one and lecture me about being rude to her little brother.
Something about this spitfire of a woman, and the boy she’s so protective of, has my defenses melting.
And if I’m not careful, I’ll burst into flames, forever melting the ice I’ve carefully kept around my heart.

15 Strangers to Instant Enemies to Lovers Romance Books
I love this trope, personally! It’s sort of like a light enemies to lovers scenario without the messy histories and emotional baggage. These couples haven’t been hating each other for years, but their relationships all have a rocky start in one way or another. A date gone wrong, a new coworker or boss who stirs up trouble, a misunderstanding from the get-go. There are so many different scenarios…

books I read in 2023
I read 240 books in 2023, which is lower than my total books read than the past few years. But it'd be ridiculous to be bothered by it because, hey, I still read 240 books!
I set myself a goal of trying to read more out of my comfort zone this year. I wanted to read 30 non-romance books, 25 physical books, and 10 non-fiction books. By the end of the year, I'd read a total of 54 non-romance books, 62 physical books, and 27 non-fiction books. I'm hoping to continue in this vein in 2024.
Other stats - for fun -
My most-read author was Cassie Mint
I gave out 32 5* ratings
My most-read genre was (of course) romance, 120 of which were contemporary
I owned most of the books I read
I read the most books in June, with 34 books read, followed by August, with 25 books read
My most read trope was forced proximity, followed by hate-to-love

Hay verdades que pueden ser peligrosas… Reseña: “Percy Jackson y los Dioses del Olimpo · Episodio 2”
Tumblr media
