Thinking about Tim’s 16th birthday and how it contrasts and compares to what his 15th birthday could’ve been…
Tim and Jack both forget Tim’s 16th birthday is coming up, but Tim’s new stepmom Dana remembers, despite only being around for at most one other birthday. (She became Jack’s girlfriend when Tim was 14 and married Jack when Tim was 15, so the only birthday she’d know him for was the 15th.) Once Dana reminds Jack they plan the surprise party with all Tim’s favorite foods and friends—all in all a much better reaction to Tim’s 16th birthday than what Bruce and Alfred did.
But here’s the thing. Tim’s 15th birthday occurred during No Man’s Land, when the islands of Gotham were cut off from the mainland and it was considered an illegal and dangerous place to be. Tim ran away to NML around July 7th, and was still there 2 weeks later (using this timeline for reference) sometime after which his dad managed to get him extracted from NML via a helicopter (lol). This means Tim was in No Man’s Land at least from around July 7th to July 21st…and Tim’s birthday is July 19th.
There’s no way to be confident what happened for Tim’s birthday, because it had never been mentioned yet. One idea is that in the chaos, Tim & Jack once again forgot. However, this wouldn’t quite explain both Dana knowing Tim’s birthday and being surprised when they forgot it.
Dana could have looked it up or asked when she became Tim’s stepmom, but also. We know Dana was with Jack the whole time Tim was in No Man’s Land. Considering how stressed and worried Jack was about Tim being in No Man’s Land, my guess is he could’ve made a big deal about Tim turning 15 while he was stuck in NML. If Jack made a big deal about the date, that would explain why next year, Dana remembered Tim’s birthdate was coming up, despite having never celebrated it before.
Edit: Remembered/found a panel in Robin #125 where Tim says Jack used to proudly tell stories every year on Tim’s birthdays + Christmas about Tim’s grandpa lying about his age to enlist in WW2 at 15. I dunno if this adds much to my analysis but it’s deeply ironic and funny to me.

Batman: Shadow of the Bat #83
We’re about 90 days into No Man’s Land at this point, so we have to presume that Barbara is cutting this sick bob herself in the middle of this dystopian hell scape, what a queen

i need to keep reading the dc comics but i literally do not know what to read after finishing no man’s land. i’m trying to keep up with reading everything tim drake is in but also i’m not skipping anything that doesn’t have him if it’s part of a bigger arc. tim drake is just like my guiding character lmao
this is me finally asking for actual help. what should i read to keep up with him and batman in general. i found a tim drake reading guide online but it’s just saying to read all the robin comics in order and i’m like is there another big arc coming up?
ok too long the question is what is after no man’s land that also includes batfam related characters? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Robins are an Invasive Species
Author: Havendance Fandom: Batman (comics), Huntress
Summary: Team up with a teen vigilante once and you'll never get rid of him again. Helena didn't sign up for any of this. Writing the fic I want to read, one Huntress and Robin team up at a time.
Readers Notes: This series sat in my TBR pile for months before I decided to pick it up in the hopes of reducing the size of the stack. It has 3 parts, Robins Don’t Make Great Roommates, Brothers Have the Worst Timing and, Batman for Dummies. Batman for Dummies is the longest work in the series and spans the No Man’s Land arc. I hadn’t read anything with Helena in it before this fic but after reading this I’ve gained a new appreciation for her as a character, and I love her and Tim as Batman and Robin! I love Tim, and Tim as Robin isn’t something I get to read very often. He’s difficult to write correctly, balancing the bat-competency and pragmatic realism with the optimism of a  young Robin!Tim. Havendance has done a spectacular job with these characters. If you’ve never read Huntress, this is a great place to start.
Rating: Teen  Warning: None Apply.    Words: 42,848k          Characters: Helena Bertinelli, Tim Drake, Barbra Gordon, Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson Additional tags: Helena Bertinelli & Tim Drake, No Man’s Land, Batman: Knightfall, Helena Bertinelli is Batman, POV Helena Bertinelli, AU-Canon Divergence, Helena Bertinelli-Centric, Canon Typical Violence

Cataclysm and No Man’s Land, to me, are one of the parts of DC Comics that are the most concrete in their time and place.
The Cataclysm happened mid 1998 (around American Independence Day). It SHOULD be Independence Day. This is a very American story, about national identity. No Man’s Land happened in 1999. For about 18 months there the Bat books run almost in real time.
Mr Wayne Goes To Washington at the end of 1998. He’s going to appeal to Washington to save his city even as the US have midterms. Of course nobody wants to pay to save Gotham - they have elections to win, and there’s no votes in spending big on Gotham, in blowing a hole in the budget.
They blow the bridges at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Even as firework displays go off, as people celebrate, they destroy the connection to Gotham and damn those left behind.
This is a disaster that happened before Y2K. The lack of Oracle’s computing power for the year is almost referential of the oncoming worries about whether all the computers ARE about to crash and the world fall into lawlessness.
Barbara’s diary date count is real, a running concept of time in a place where the date no longer matters, the only thing that matters is how long it has been happening. I understand her record on a deep fundamental level. I too counted lockdowns by day, and knew it was Day 51, Day 97, Day 108. Days since the only important thing happened, since my world changed.
And then, when Tim Drake’s rescue finally captures the outside world’s attention? It’s in late 1999, even as candidates for President are positioning themselves for the 2000 election.
Lex Luthor moves to rebuild Gotham as much to position himself as a possible President, to start his election campaign, as he does to try and acquire cheap title to half of Gotham and screw Bruce Wayne.
No Man’s Land happened in 1999. It must always have happened in 1999, to me. Even with comic’s sliding time scale. It could have happened 3-4 years ago in the past, except if it had, it would be a different disaster, with different effects. People would have reacted differently.

She is different since she met you… you upset her, in a good way.
And she upsets you that is also good.

So I attempted to slap together a more…aesthetic map for the Noman’s Land planet? The one that’s shown on-screen is always super brief and I thought it would be neat to have one that was a little easier to understand. Admittedly this isn’t a perfect recreation as I only had photoshop on my ipad available (you’ll have to zoom in to read some of the names), but I’ll prolly spruce it up tomorrow and see if it can be made more easily readable using illustrator instead or something.
Also did you guys realize how silly some of these town/landmark names are?? I genuinely wonder if any of this was canon in the original manga or first anime…
The original map image I used below the cut:

Batgirl (2000) #62
Something that messes me up: Cassandra Cain being 8 years old when David Cain made her kill for the first time, and then she runs away from David Cain for years until she reaches Gotham right before the earthquake.
And since she turned 18 on panel in Batgirl #37 right after No Man’s Land, and the earthquake was more than a year before that, she’d be 16 when she reaches Gotham. 8 is half of 16. So by that point Cass had spent half her life being raised by David Cain and the other half running away from him.

The Swamp Kitty and The Sewer Clown
Tumblr media
I’ve been reading the Novelization of “No Mans Land”, it’s honestly better than the comic. Here’s an expert from the book
“As the winter continued, Joker took to trapping what animals he could find, then had hours of fun putting them through therapy. The opossum had been his most successful patient, and now was charming in its blood lust.
Later that night, though, sleeping comfortably with opossum beneath Dr Arkham’s big oak desk, he heard it again. This time, though, he was certain it wasn’t himself who was singing, and after some investigation, tracked the noise to the nearest air duct.”
The fact that he made friends with an opossums and named it “Opossum” just seems right. He looks like an opossum person.
