Oh, Captain - Rex (TCW)
Summary: The 501st is getting a new Co-General and Rex wants to be prepared. His brothers, however, dare him to flirt with a woman at 79s the night before. Length: 1370 words Warnings: Unnamed Female Character (Can be Read as OC or Reader); Rex's Horrible Flirting Skills; Fives is a Menace
Tumblr media
79s was packed full of clones as usual, though the color scheme of the night was predominantly blue and yellow for the 501st and 212th. They had just finished a battle together in the Mid Rim and returned to Coruscant to resupply before they shipped out again. And in the case of the 501st, they were on Coruscant to pick up their new Jedi general.
It was the only reason why Rex went out that night in the first place.
He had to make sure that all of his men were presentable for their meeting with the new assistant general, who had been assigned to the battalion so that General Skywalker could be called away more often. General Skywalker assured Rex that the new assistant general wouldn’t be that much of a stick in the mud, but Rex didn’t want to take a risk.
“Oh, come on, Rex, you heard the General. The new general’s fun. Have a drink for kriff’s sake,” Fives urged, placing a drink in front of Rex.
“I’m all set, Fives,” Rex replied, pushing the drink away from him.
“Who is the new assistant general, anyways?” Echo asked curiously, leaning over. “The Commander didn’t have a name.”
“I bet they’re a brand new Jedi. Young like General Skywalker,” Jesse stated, earning some nods. “He mentioned that they trained together.”
“It’s not for us to speculate,” Rex replied, earning a sigh from some of his brothers. “We need to be prepared. I don’t want the new general’s first impression of us to be that we look sloppy.”
“Oh, relax, Rex,” Cody spoke up, causing the rest of the 501st to perk up. If anyone could talk some sense into Rex, it would be Cody. “You’re going to be fine. Have a drink. We were just in trenches on a dustball for fifteen rotations. Or maybe make a new friend.”
“Like her,” Fives interjected, smacking Rex on the shoulder.
The entire table turned to watch a humanoid woman take a seat at the bar. A woman alone in a clone bar? It would be about five seconds before she was swarmed. But there was something about her that intrigued Rex. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but there was just something about her that drew all of his attention without any work at all.
“I’ve never seen her here before,” Echo stated as the woman ordered a drink.
“I wouldn’t mind seeing her around,” Fives spoke up before glancing at Rex. “And looks like you wouldn’t either, Captain.”
“Not all of us think with what’s under our codpieces, Fives,” Rex grunted in return.
“I’m thinking that they are, though,” Jesse pointed out, gesturing to two clones who made their way over to the mysterious woman. “Hopefully her first experience with a clone isn’t one of Fox’s shinies. She’ll never come to a clone bar again.”
Rex glanced over at the woman again before getting up from his seat. Fives looked over at Echo with a shit-eating grin, to which Echo simply rolled his eyes. Rex walked around the bar, nodding to his brothers that he passed, but keeping his gaze on the mystery woman and the two clones that sat down next to her.
But before they got too far into a conversation, she seemed to say something with a seductive smile and his brothers got up and left her alone without a word of protest. Now, downright curious, Rex found his legs carrying him over to the woman. She turned her head and their eyes met for the first time. His heart seemed to stutter as he took the last few steps toward her.
“They weren’t bothering you, were they?” Rex asked, causing the woman to smile.
“No, not at all. I told them that I was just looking for a drink and nothing more. They seemed to do the rest of the math.” She took a sip of her drink, peering over the rim of her glass and practically into Rex’s soul. “Sorry if you were planning on playing hero, Commander.”
“It’s Captain, actually. Captain Rex,” Rex introduced himself, causing the woman’s eyes to widen a small fraction.
“My apologies, Captain Rex.”
And there was that arrhythmia again. Was this woman part-siren or something?
“You can just call me Rex,” he assured her, causing the woman to smile softly. “And what exactly should I call you, ma’am?”
“Anything but ‘ma’am’,” she quipped, taking another sip of her drink. “You’re making me feel a little too old, Captain.”
Kriff, he could get used to her calling him that.
They got to talking. Not so much specifics about themselves, but rather life around them. The GAR, galactic politics, the drink menu. Rex didn’t even realize that he literally didn’t know any basic facts about the woman until she got up to leave for the night.
“Do you come to this part of town often?” Rex asked, causing the woman to chuckle.
“Not usually, but I suppose I could make an exception . . . Captain.”
Rex watched her walk out the door before he was suddenly swarmed by brothers, rattling off question after question. Up until Cody, as the highest ranking officer of the bunch, took control of the situation and asked one simple question.
“What’s her name?”
Rex opened his mouth to reply, but instead winced, causing his brothers around him to groan.
“He’s hopeless,” Fives sighed, shaking his head.
“He was hopeless the second that he decided to follow your advice,” Echo pointed out.
*~*~*~*
Rex walked through the rows of his men, inspecting them one last time while the General and Commander brought aboard their new General. Co-General. Whatever. Either way, Rex wanted to impress them. And that meant that his men had to be in tip top shape. But when he heard the doors to the hangar open, Rex quickly took his place at the front.
Only to nearly drop his helmet when he recognized the woman walking with Anakin and Ahsoka. And when he heard Fives’s giggle, he could only swallow down a choice set of words.
“And here’s our captain, Rex,” Anakin introduced, causing their eyes to lock for the first time since the bar. “The best of the best.”
“I would expect no less,” she replied with an easygoing and mischievous smile. “It’s nice to meet you, Captain Rex.”
“You as well, General,” Rex practically choked out, trying to not sweat through his blacks.
“Rex, this the new co-general,” Ahsoka introduced, adding the general’s name. “She was Master Plo Koon’s padawan and served with the Wolffe Pack.”
“Why’d you leave it, General?” Rex directed towards the new general, who smiled at him.
“The Jedi Council needed someone to babysit General Skywalker and because I value public service above my own sanity—”
“—This whole spiel again?” Anakin complained, causing her to turn to him.
“You're just upset because Admiral Yularen laughed in your face when I told him what happened back on Corellia when you—”
“—Perhaps we should move on to the rest of the tour,” Anakin stressed, causing her to smirk.
“Of course.”
Anakin and Ahsoka led the way through the rows of troopers, though she lingered behind them. Looking over her shoulder, she offered Rex a smile that made his heart stop for a moment all over again.
“I’ll be back to meet the full battalion formally once the rest of my briefings are concluded. If that fits with your timeline, Captain?”
“Yes, of course, General.”
“Great.” She offered him a curt nod before that smirk returned. “And next time we’re at 79s, drinks are on me, Captain.”
The galaxy was testing him today, that was for sure. Rex watched her walk off with Anakin and Ahsoka before slowly putting his bucket back on his head.
“Fives,” he growled out. “You have exactly five seconds before—”
Fives took off in a sprint across the hangar and Rex took off after him. Echo sighed and shook his head before turning to his comms. Sending Commander Cody a message that Rex did learn that the woman that he was flirting with last night was the new general, Echo couldn’t help but laugh as he watched Fives evade Rex.
“Well, this is going to be interesting.”

Hi Sev! For your OC shipping ask game, I'd love to know your headcanons if Daria were shipped with Rex!
Tumblr media
Every king needs a queen, so let’s gooooo!!!
Rex would make Daria soft af with how gentle he is with her. This would honestly make her blue screen at first.
Daria would be super keen on hearing about any strategies Rex could discuss, and ask questions with little diagrams drawn on her glass coffee table.
The glass coffee table would also become their in-house message board. Rex wanted to leave a note before he ran out the door, and had to scribble it on the table.
They’d play games together all the time especially cubikahd, and Rex would try not to laugh when Daria goes all “sore loser mode” he compares her to Cody and gets tackled for his troubles
Daria would make treats for Rex (and include extras because she knows they’re getting jacked the second he steps back on the Resolute)
She’d also teach him to cook and bake because mess hall food/ration bars get the job done, but food is for pleasure too.
They’d be a quietly affectionate couple. Gentle touches here and there, NO PDA. They’re both confident, so their love doesn’t need fanfare. It’s comfortable.
Cody would totally approve.
Ahhh, this was so fun to think about. 🥰🥰🥰 thank you for sending these in @dystopicjumpsuit 💙💙

WIP Wednesday
Thanks for the tag @dystopicjumpsuit
Not sure if the is acceptable for a WIP Wednesday, but I tend to start my scenes with the dialogue, then I go back and add the descriptions, action, etc. So, here is the dialogue for a scene from my Rex x OC WIP... Simply because I love Fives in this and I want him to be seen.
For context: OC and Fives are besties in this Fic.
[Embrey yanks Fives into a storage closet for this convo]
“Fives, you are my best friend and I love you dearly but– why in the galaxy did Rex just ask me about kissing you?” “Oooh! So he asked you about it?” “FIVES!” “EMBREY!” “Look, all I’m saying is, he has never ONCE asked me about a girl I’ve kissed and I’ve never heard him ask about anyone else either… So why would he be asking you? Hmm?” “Because, Di’kut- we’re both soldiers on the same squad! He’s probably concerned he’ll have to transfer one of us!” “Pft- or- OR he was asking you because he knows I say all kinds of things to mess with him, but wanted to make sure that I hadn’t kissed his girl!” “I’m not his girl Fives- come on it’s not like he’s interested-” “He is.” “-in me like that. We’re just friends, okay?” “Right.” “But if he was interested, you would also be interested. Right?” “I’m not doing this right now, Fives!” “Nu-uh! We’re doing this! I know you, Ems!” “Don’t call me that. You can’t call me that when I’m angry with you.” “You can’t stay angry at me.” “Come on, Ems! You and I both know that you’ve got a soft spot for him.” “Just let me help you. I can be your Wingman!” “I CAN’T Fives- He’s my CO!” “You’re a soldier. He’s a Soldier. Our lives are short enough as it is without ignoring any small chances of happiness that come our way.” “Look, Ems. I just- I think you could make him really happy.”

The clones didn’t have much in terms of possessions; many didn’t have anything other than the armor on their backs. They got a stipend whenever they landed on Coruscant for shore leave, the simplest grace they were allowed, but most of that money was quickly squandered on booze or nightly company. Many clones had tattoos, some got theirs from brothers who were more artistically skilled and others ventured into parlors in the mid-levels of Coruscant. These tattoos served as permanent mementos etched in their skin, something to stand out from the rest.  Some men spent money on little trinkets, the smallest of things to call their own. The lucky ones had found companionship during their time away from the war and carried tokens from their lovers tucked away safely in their belts. Rex wondered how many of his brothers died with those tokens still on them; would a brother who knew the partner of the clone return it to them? Or would it rest with him, to be carried into whatever awaited? Aside from the small necklace that still resided like a heavy weight in his belt, Rex had everything he wanted to remember stored in his datapad.
It was rare to have moments to himself in as grand of a campaign as Anaxes. This was one of the largest sieges he had been in, and his mind was working overtime trying to stop the Separatist assault. He was drained, plagued by the thoughts that something else was at play here for how the Separatists seemed to be always one step ahead of them. That’s all that was on his mind, as he scrolled through the datapad, his thoughts lingering on better days.
The pictures he had on his datapad were scattered, some taken after moments of victory, some from moments out on leave or snapped in between missions in the barracks. He scrolled through them all, counting the faces he would never see again. In one photo he was squeezed between Hardcase and Fives in a booth at 79’s, a slightly irritated yet amused glance on his face. Rex remembered the moment; Hardcase had just brought shots back to the table but wasn’t careful as he handled them and spilled them all over the group. Hardcase had paused for a moment, watching the ruin he had created before he bellowed into a fit of laughter. Hardcase was dead a month later.
Rex scrolled through more photos, taking as much advantage as he could of these moments before they left on their mission. There were many taken at 79’s; usually the result of the more sober brother snapping pictures of the others as they enjoyed a night out. His scrolling paused at one: a group photo that would look innocent to the eye, unless someone looked further at Rex and Talia. Her cheeks were flushed, her eyes bright and her smile as she wrapped her arms around Rex’s neck; the group was pressed so closely together for the photo that she was half on his lap. Unseen to the camera, Rex’s hand was placed on her lower back, holding her steady as they posed for a camera that Rex wasn’t even looking at because he was staring at her.
Rex scrolled away again, hoping for some reprieve that he wouldn’t find. The next photo was of him, Talia, and Fives standing outside of the bar, the neon lights illuminating them. Fives had his arms wrapped around Rex and Talia’s shoulder as they all laughed; a smile was plastered on Fives face, a few wayward curls falling in his forehead. Forever frozen in time as Rex would remember him, unchanging and unknowing of what was to come.  Rex scrolled again, and again through the photos, not really looking for one in particular but eager for something that would fill the void left in the place of those he had lost. The pictures of Talia were haunting him for a different reason, because he craved to look at them longer but they caused the most pain.
Rex indulged himself in the remedy that only seemed to worsen his wounds. He didn’t know how many times he had listened to that voicemail Talia left him since he first opened it on that platform back on Coruscant, but couldn’t resist the temptation that came from her voice no matter how much it ached to hear.
“Hey…it’s me,” Talia’s voice sounded through the speaker once more. She sounded tired, her voice slightly slurred. “I just…wanted to check in on you. Wanted to hear your voice. I…I miss you, Rex.” Then there was no more.
It was a bitter high, hearing his name off her lips only for it to fall silent again. When he first played it on Coruscant, Rex had been rooted to the ground where he stood as the train pulled up to the platform. He was caught between the knowledge that he hadn’t technically done something wrong, but he still felt like the scum of the lower levels as he heard the crack in Talia’s voice.
Even now it seemed to echo in the empty barracks; why did she sound so off? Had something happened? Was she hurt? Rex was too much of a coward to find out; his own fear of reaching out holding him back as he replayed the message. His finger hovered over the button as Rex stared across the row of empty bunks, pressing it once more to let Talia’s voice offer him that warm familiarity before he was nudged by the cold reminder that he was probably the source for the pain in her trembling voice. He had cursed himself by listening to it over and over too many times; he seemed to fall into a trance whenever he played it, rethinking the past year and everything he had done and what he could have possibly done differently. He wouldn’t trade his time with Talia for anything, except for maybe a chance at more time.
Footsteps sounded leading up to the barracks, and Rex swiped the message off and returned to the photos on his datapad for something that seemed less suspicious, only to find himself caught in his thoughts even more.
It was a photo of him, Cody, Echo, and Fives; right after the Domino Twins had finished their ARC training. It was cruel how little time Echo had as an ARC Trooper before falling at the Citadel; something he had worked so hard for yet he didn’t get much time in the position. Echo was a bit stiff at times; a stickler for regulations and a bit uptight, but underneath that he had one of the smartest minds Rex had known. He was also one of the kindest soldiers, his wry sense of humor something few saw. Rex felt selfish for admitting how the loss of Echo affected him, especially as he saw Fives trying to hide his grief over the last of his batch. Rex felt like he failed Echo, something that only gnawed at his gut as he felt something suspicious was in the works by the hands of the Separatists.
“Come on Rex; time to move out,” Cody called out as the door to the barracks slammed shut behind him. His steps echoed on the durasteel, heavy and quick. Rex knew he had lingered too long, caught in his own thoughts, but he couldn’t budge quite yet.
“Fives, Echo, and before that Hevy,” Rex muttered, his eyes still locked on the photo. “There’s so many troopers gone.”
“Yeah, regular folk don’t understand,” Cody sighed behind him, a mournful exhaustion heavy in his tone, yet an understanding for what he thought was on Rex’s mind. Always the leader, shouldering the grief of his brothers, Cody continued “Sometimes in war, it’s hard to be the one that survives.”
“That’s what I’m worried about,” Rex broached tentatively, turning his head to face Cody.
“Well, what do you mean?” Cody asked, stepping around the bunk so he could stand in front of Rex, still his superior, but a supportive friend. Rex always appreciated Cody’s willingness to listen, the support he had for Rex ever since they were cadets. Even though their relationship had been tested with everything that had happened with Talia; Rex knew Cody had his back until the end. But the thoughts running through Rex’s head could test that reliance.
“I didn’t tell the generals; they might think I’m crazy,” Rex added a nervous chuckle to the latter part of his sentence, attempting to show Cody he knows how out of reach his theory will sound. “In fact, you might think I’m crazy.”
“What is it?” Cody asked sternly, but not unkindly. His face was an unreadable mask, very similar to the expression he wore when preparing for bad news.
       “I think Echo’s alive.”
The words spilled from Rex’s mouth, somehow simultaneously his biggest hope and fear.
“That’s impossible, he died at the Citadel.” Cody wasn’t cruel or doubting, just appealing to any possible remnant of Rex’s reason.
“The way the droids are countering us here, the strategies I’m using, they’re all old battle plans Echo and I drew up together,” Rex offered as his explanation; he knew he was grasping at straws, but he couldn’t ignore the patterns.
“Look, Rex, I hear what you’re saying,” Cody countered, “But it’s just not possible.”
“I hope you’re right. But the fact is Echo’s fingerprints are all over these Separatist strategies.” Rex argued adamantly. How could Cody not see what he was?
“Rex,” Cody had a slight chuckle in his voice, as if trying to add levity to his concern. “You have to admit, what you’re saying is a long shot at best and, most likely, misplaced hope. I need you to be focused on this.”
“I-I know. I know, don’t worry.” Rex replied, attempting to soothe his own mind more than Cody’s worries.
Cody stared down at him, a frown toying on his lips. “Are you sure that’s all that’s bothering you?”
Rex gulped, and met his brother’s eye. Cody’s eyes were shaded with concern, scanning Rex in a way that Rex knew Cody could see right through him, the same way that Rex could practically read Cody’s thoughts in this moment. But what could Rex say?
       “Nothing else, Cody,” Rex answered.
“You’ve just been through a lot lately,” Cody continued, despite Rex’s assurance. “That…situation with Fives, and then Turia with General Ri-“
“I said nothing’s on my mind, sir,” Rex insisted, his voice more tense than he could help. Having Cody speak her name out loud would breathe life into what happened, ignite the memory of what was. Cody kept his gaze on Rex, doubting every word that just left his lips but he didn’t push further. Cody nodded and stepped around the bunk, making his way to the door.
“So what squad are we taking in?” Rex called over his shoulder, ready to move on from the subject.
Cody’s steps slowed as he turned to face Rex once more, a sly glance on his face, “Clone Force 99.”
--
The Bad Batch was unlike any group of clones Rex had ever seen. Rex silently agreed with Kix’s statement that they didn’t look like clones; if it were not for the name as an ode to 99 and their voices, Rex would have doubted it entirely. Rex observed them closely as Cody greeted their Sergeant, Hunter, familiarly; for being of one batch it was hard to find similarities even amongst their own group. Three of them were taller than any clone Rex had seen The tallest was the large and hulking clone, with a scar taking half his face. The other two were leaner, one with specs and focused on his datapad, while the other bore gray hair, a crosshair tattoo over his eye and an unpleasant expression.
“Sorry we’re late, Commander,” Hunter greeted, his voice even grittier than that of a regular clone. “We were assisting with putting down the insurrection on Yalbec Prime when your comm came in. Had a few unforeseen…complications.”
The large one let out a booming laugh, pointing at Jesse. “Ever fought a male Yalbec?”
“Um. No. Can’t say I have,” Jesse answered, a bit taken aback.
“You’re lucky! Only way to kill them is with one of these!” tThe clone pulled out a long vibro-knife, showing it off to Rex and his men.
“That’s right, Wrecker here cut off the Queen’s stinger while she was still alive,” Hunter explained, then turned to his batchmate with a slightly accusatory tone, “That’s why all those Yalbec males tried to eat us.”
“Uh, technically they were trying to mate with us,” the one with the goggles cut in, squeezing past Wrecker and Hunter. “And for your information, the stinger of a Yalbec Queen is a delicacy on some planets.”
“Thank you for the clarification, Tech,” a voice called from the Batch’s ship - a voice that sent chills through Rex’s spine. “Though it was information I’m sure we all would have liked before we fell into that den.”
Rex’s eyes darted to the entrance port of the ship, and had he not heard her voice Rex would not have believed his eyes. Talia was stepping down from the ship, the wind blowing her hair back, along with the longer skirts of her robe. It was some cruel twist of fate mocking him; thinking of how many times before that he would have been overjoyed to be surprised by her presence, but now that joy couldn’t be felt. The Batch seemed to chuckle at her comment, which earned them a flick of that smile that always seemed to make Rex’s heart skip a bit, but when her gaze shifted to him and his brothers, it fell, her eyes like shards of ice meeting his.
“Commander Cody, Captain Rex,” she greeted. To those unknowing it would seem perfectly friendly, but to Rex it felt like a punch to the gut. Cody shifted uncomfortably in his feet but nodded at Talia. Rex averted his gaze, focusing intently on the dropship arriving to pick them up for their mission instead, as if a glance into her eyes would wreck any progress he had made in his attempts to get over her.
Rex could tell Jesse and Kix were sharing their own silent communication behind him; the thing about a secret relationship was that since he had never technically voiced its existence to Jesse or Kix, he never told them it had ended. Still, they were smart men, and they knew something had shifted after Turia when Rex changed the subject anytime a conversation so much as approached Talia. Talia did offer the pair a fleeting smile before she turned to face the Batch, her face lighting up slightly, yet in a manner that Rex recognized as being forced. “Go easy on them, you guys. They’re a good bunch of regs.”
She turned to the direction of the command bunker as Hunter introduced the last member of the Batch, Crosshair. The squad began to board the dropship, but Rex was rooted to the spot, daring a glance at Talia’s back as she walked away.
“The 412th just got assigned to join the siege,” Cody muttered at Rex’s side as the rest of the squad started to board. His glance was apologetic, “I was going to warn you; I didn’t expect that she would arrive early.”
“Nothing to worry about, sir.” Rex answered bluntly, ignoring the knot stuck in his gut. “I told you; there’s nothing going on.”
Tumblr media
Talia couldn’t get to the command center quick enough. She didn’t dare a glance back, any more time spent lingering on the platform. Of course he had to be right there, sprung upon her within seconds of landing. She knew she would have to see Rex, but she had hoped it would be limited. And that she would have had more time to prepare herself. Running into ex’s without being properly prepared was never a good idea; running in your ex right after someone discusses an alien species trying to mate with you? Probably a worst-case scenario. And the fact that she had to go see Master Windu and Anakin right now, all while pretending her head was clear moments after? Talia really wondered why the Force seemed to have it out for her.
It was a strange feeling, being so close to one who had once meant so much to her, yet forced to act as if there weren’t a void left in her heart by the absence of Rex. She supposed this mission he was going on with the Bad Batch was a pleasant distraction for Talia, an aide in time so she could prepare herself for the rest of the campaign. To smile and regard him like any other soldier in the Grand Army of the Republic. To pretend that his face was just another of the ones so similar to his own, when everything about him was unique. The biggest farce would be acting like she was fine with how things were, as if every time she looked at him she wouldn’t be thinking of the moments they spent alone together, how soft his hands felt when they brushed over her body, how delicately his featherlight kisses would be in the early hours of the morning. How could she pretend like he was nothing to her when he was all that occupied her thoughts? And what hurt the most was that he probably was fine, so stubborn and resolved he barely even cared to meet her eyes when she arrived.
Still, she walked into the command center, her head held high. Master Windu and Anakin were examining maps of all the fronts of the campaign on Anaxes, the blue sheen from the hologram illuminating their faces as they looked up upon her entrance.
“You’re here earlier than expected, Talia,” Master Windu commented as Talia bowed.
“I caught a ride with Clone Force 99 before they went on their mission,” Talia explained offhandedly. “The 412th is en-route and should arrive within the rotation.”
“They should be able to flank some of those dreadnoughts then, and give us some much-needed air support,” Anakin added, his eyes narrowed as they scanned the map in front of him.
“Looks like you need all the help you can get,” Talia observed as she glanced at the projections portraying the Separatist ships outnumbering the Republic Navy. She rubbed her chin in thought, taking in the situation, muttering under her breath. “This is almost as large of a campaign as the second battle of Geonosis.”
“It’s a system we can’t afford to lose,” Master Windu stated grimly, a slight glimpse of exhaustion slipping through his tone. He addressed Anakin next, “I hope your Captain’s plan works, and they find out how the Separatists are countering us so effectively.”
“Should have known this was Rex’s plan,” Talia murmured, her fingernails pinching at the skin of her forearms so she could ignore the lurch of her gut. Anakin raised a brow at her, no doubt confused by the slight edge of bitterness in her tone so she straightened up, firming her voice before adding “This will be helpful beyond Anaxes; it seems like we’re being hit with more losses than victories as of late.”
“As much as I don’t want to believe our plans are compromised, I hope something the squad finds can grant us some insight as to why we keep losing,” Master Windu said.
Talia nodded in agreement, her hand slipping from her chin to rest at the base of her neck; she used to fiddle with her necklace when she was lost in thought, an act so instinctual she would sometimes do it before remembering she didn’t have it anymore. She wondered what Rex had done with it.
“Is everything all right, Talia?” Master Windu asked, “You seem… distracted.”
“Just a bit tired from my trip,” Talia answered quickly. “I should head to my quarters, get settled in and read up on the latest briefings.”
Tumblr media
Echo was alive. There was no doubt in Rex’s mind, no other explanation for what he had heard when infiltrating the communication tower. And every moment they wasted was another that he was held hostage still, something Rex could barely live with. He had left Echo at the Citadel, calling on Fives to move on when the shuttle exploded. It was Rex’s fault Echo was out there, somehow being used by the Separatists to betray his brothers. It turned Rex’s stomach to think about what condition he might be in, what he must have been through, but he couldn’t allow himself to dwell on it too much. He needed to focus on the mission ahead. Anakin was petitioning the Council, getting approval for the mission so now all he could do was wait.
Rex and the Batch had arrived back to base an hour ago, just in time for evening rations. After stopping by the medic station to check on Cody, whose injuries were thankfully healing quickly, Rex grabbed his meal and sat near the Batch. He didn’t miss the curious glances being tossed from troops around them, and had he not seen them in action already he would have had his doubts as well, but they were fine soldiers. They didn’t seem as enthusiastic about the plan to go after Echo, but Rex knew they were the best shot for the job.
Rex was lost in thought when Anakin and Talia walked by. They were bickering, Anakin rolling his eyes as Talia stepped in front of him, her eyes in a piercing glare as she talked at him. Whatever she said must have hit the right nerve in Anakin, because he crossed his arms and glared right back down at her. Talia stood her ground, a hand on her hip, her lips pursed in frustration and steely gaze unwavering. Anakin sighed and walked around her, waving back at her to follow him. Talia let out a sigh, before following the other Jedi, her fists clenched at her side.
“She’s a spitfire, that one,” Hunter observed, nodding his head in the direction Talia and Anakin walked off in. He let out a small chuckle, “Wouldn’t want to be on the other side of her in a fight.”
Rex almost huffed a laugh and replied that it’s not a place anyone would want to be. But that wasn’t his place to admit. So, he just nodded as Wrecker laughed in agreement with Hunter. Rex frowned to himself, thinking about how Talia had arrived with the Batch, flying on their ship instead of traveling with her own men; something in the past she had reserved as a way to spend more time with Rex.
“Have you all worked with T-General Riva often?” Rex asked, toying with the food on his tray.
“A handful of times,” Hunter answered offhandedly, “Just worked on a few special ops together.”
“Hunter’s worked with her more closely than the rest of us,” Crosshair offered from the side, a snide grin peaking on his face as he sipped from his canteen. Rex frowned and glanced from the white-haired clone back to Hunter, who was glaring at his Batchmate. The statement didn’t make sense. Sure, Hunter was the commanding officer, but the Batch didn’t seem like the group who would care that much about protocol practice. And Hunter seemed irritated and slightly uncomfortable by Crosshair’s comment.
Rex’s food turned sour in his mouth, his appetite lost for a moment as a realization hit for another possible meaning for Crosshair’s words…Hunter and Talia…was something going on there? No, there wasn’t enough time for that, for her to move on. But still, the familiarity with how she spoke with the Batch, arriving with them and that teasing look Crosshair was still levying at Hunter...it unsettled Rex’s nerves. Hunter was a good soldier, Rex had seen enough to know that, but the idea of some other man’s hands on Talia…
Rex tried to push down the prickling thoughts as they formed. _This was all assumptions; he could have misread everything. And besides, he had lost all rights to care what Talia did, and if she wanted to move on, she had every right to. That didn’t make the thought of it sting any less.
--
Covering for General Skywalker whenever he wanted to call Padmé was always somewhat nerve-racking, especially when Rex’s thoughts were locked on the mission ahead. It didn’t help that General Kenobi had come to seek out Anakin and saw through every word of Rex’s lies; if he wasn’t so surprised, Rex probably would have laughed when Kenobi name-dropped Padmé. Hell, he would laugh now if he didn’t feel the bitter embarrassment coming from Anakin as they walked to the Havoc Marauder. Rex honestly couldn’t be surprised that Kenobi had a feeling what Anakin was doing; even if Anakin had never told him about the marriage, Rex didn’t have to be Force sensitive to know something bigger was going on with his general and the senator.
“Thanks for covering,” Anakin muttered under his breath as they walked on. Before Rex could tell him that it was no trouble, Anakin waved it off. “No really – I owe you. If you and Talia need to find some alone time, I can pay you back.”
“That won’t be necessary, sir,” Rex replied tersely, his gaze locked ahead
“What – oh don’t tell me you two have already been sneaking off to every corner of the camp-“
“No sir,” Rex cut Anakin off, fumbling for the words, his rigidness cracking. Sure, Anakin knew, but this was just too personal. “We’re, uh, not involved anymore.”
Anakin stopped in his tracks and turned to face Rex, “Since when?”
Rex steps slowed, and he heaved a sigh as he wanted to have any conversation besides this one. “Turia, sir.”
Anakin frowned and crossed his arms. “But why?”
“Sir, I would really rather not discuss it,” Rex couldn’t help but be short with his response. He trusted Anakin, but he was anxious to leave for this mission. And maybe he just didn’t know the right answer to his general’s question. Anakin stared back at him for a moment, his eyes narrowed, before relaxing his stance and turning back in the direction of the ship. Hunter and Wrecker were standing outside, grabbing some last crates of gear before they departed. Both clones nodded at Rex and Anakin upon their arrival.
“Hey, what’s with the nose art?” Anakin asked suddenly, his voice filled with curiosity mingled with a barely veiled irritation. Rex glanced at him then followed his line of sight; the nose art was clearly a picture of Padmé, a slit high in her dress and showing off her legs as she held up a blaster.
“Ah, that’s our girl; the Naboo senator,” Hunter explained almost reverently. “We check her out on the holo scans.”
“Yeah, she can negotiate with me anytime,” Wrecker added with a laugh as he followed Hunter up the landing ramp. This was another one of those moments that Rex would laugh if it were not for the palpably angry General next to him.
Rex forced a cough, trying to hide the huff of laughter that did escape his lips, “Umm, L-let’s get aboard.”
“That is not staying there,“ Anakin whispered angrily, his jaw clenched as he stomped up the ramp. Rex sighed and followed him aboard, only to stop right at the entrance to the shuttle.
Talia sat on top of a crate in the center of the ship, bent over and relacing her boots. As Rex and Anakin boarded, she glanced up, nodded, and returned to focus on her shoe. Rex glanced at Anakin in confusion, but the general was already heading over to check out the cockpit as Tech and Wrecker prepared for takeoff. Standing still by the entrance as the door slid shut, Rex’s feet felt heavy, but he had stood there for too long, and Talia glanced up again, this time arching a brow quizzically at him.
“I didn’t realize you were coming on this mission,” Rex stated bluntly.
Taila frowned and straightened in her seat, now grabbing her lightsaber off her belt. She examined something on the connector that held her two hilts together, twisting it separate before re-attaching it again. “I was at the Citadel too, Rex. Right before…well, right before we lost Echo he had pulled me out of the way of a blast. If there’s any chance he’s alive, I’m going to help get him back.”
“Well, we can use all the hands we can get,” Rex offered. It was the truth, and there were few fighters more capable than Talia. Even if things weren’t in a good place between them, he knew she would be a good addition to the team. And that loyalty and determination she showed when she was willing to go every step necessary to complete a mission was something Echo would need. Talia just nodded at him once more, before returning her focus to her saber. Nothing looked wrong with it, and had it been another time Rex would have asked her what she was trying to do. He stood there for a moment, searching for words that didn’t exist, some excuse to keep talking, but what more could be said?
Anakin rescued Rex by calling him over, needing to go over one last debrief as the shuttle lurched and took off. As he stood by the cockpit, Hunter approached from the back of the ship, stopping in front of Talia and saying something that Rex couldn’t hear. Whatever it was earned a huff of laughter from Talia, as she returned her sabers to her belt. She pushed herself off the crate, walking with Hunter as they joined the others to prepare as best they could for what would come. It was a short journey to Skako Minor, and Rex hoped he would find the answers for what was troubling him.

For the OC ship game, may I humbly ask for thoughts and/or thots on Ilani x Rex? 💕
Or! Ilani x Hunter? Whichever you're vibing with more 👀
deeja! love the way your mind works, friend. I couldn't choose (typical bi behavior, woops), so have HCs for both! everything below the cut.
Ilani x Rex
How they met:
Through Anakin, as fate would have it. As the former Padawan of her best friend, Anakin considers Ilani like a big sister or an aunt and can’t wait to introduce her to his captain. “One of my best men,” he boasts, a proud smile on his face as Rex offers his hand for Ilani to shake. “One of the best men I’ve ever met, really.”
Ilani raises an eyebrow at that. Not in surprise, but in interest. Anyone who earns the praise of Anakin Skywalker must be worth their salt.
It’s not long after being introduced that they have a chance to fight together on the battlefield. Ilani immediately understands why Anakin praises Rex so highly; his strategy and care for his men is unparalleled among the GAR, and she respects him for it right off the bat.
She honestly kind of fumbles the first battle, though. It’s still early enough in the war that she hasn’t yet adjusted to a bellicose existence, still preferring a negotiation over a firefight, and because of this she really only defends herself and the men. In this particular battle, she remains on the defensive until it is clear she must go on the offensive, and even then, it’s only after Rex has a close call that she is spurred into action.
General HCs:
Rex doesn’t begrudge Ilani for her actions in that battle, recognizing that the Jedi Order she was raised under instilled very different values from the soldier’s training he received on Kamino, but she’s not felt quite so embarrassed or inadequate in a long time as he tells her this. It makes her feel like a Padawan, and that more than anything forces her to reevaluate.
In general, the two of them get along amicably. Partly this is because they spend most of their time together either strategizing, or in the heat of battle. Ilani initially shares some of Anakin’s wholly-positive praise of Rex. It’s only once Rex convinces her to spend time with him not thinking about the war that she realizes that she’s pedastalized him. Like the rest of the clones, he’s a whole human, with strengths, yes, but also deep flaws.
Loyal to a dangerous fault, encouraged to think for himself but threatened with doing things by the book, the Rex that Ilani comes to know off the battlefield is frustrated, disillusioned, and short. She knows it’s not aimed at her; she’s not perfect, either, but together they work on themselves.
They’re honestly platonic soulmates. They vibe well, they understand one another, and they help the other grow. Neither of them have had much romantic experience, so at some point Ilani confessed to him feeling something for him. They kissed, and immediately both decided, nope! This is weird, like kissing a family member.
They’ve been close friends for years now, though.
Ilani x Hunter
How they met:
Through Cody. The Batch gets an assignment that requires a Jedi, and Cody can think of no one better than his general’s best friend. Cody rightly assumes that Ilani’s fierce loyalty and steadfast compassion will be exactly what the boys of Clone Force 99 need.
This is, of course, the Bad Batch’s frat-era, and Hunter is as cocky as Ilani is stubborn. They butt heads nearly immediately.
The tension between them nearly bungles the mission. Thankfully, some quick thinking by Tech and some truly impressive theatrics by Crosshair save the day. Ilani and Hunter spend the flight back to base in frustrated silence, sitting at opposite ends of the ship. But by the time they drop out of hyperspace, Ilani, having meditated on it, requests that Hunter remain so they can talk. The others dutifully file out and, once the ship is otherwise empty and the hatch shut, Ilani apologizes.
Hunter is taken aback, but seems to believe her, and offers an apology of his own. “Truce?” “Truce.” In all honesty, they both realize that they disagreed so strongly because they’re highly similar: both are strong and competent leaders, both believe they know what’s best, and both want what’s best for their men. They just had very different ideas of how to fulfill all of those traits.
General HCs:
From then on, whenever CF99 needs a Jedi, they (and by “they” I mean Hunter) request Ilani. She almost always obliges. The others aren’t stupid, they know that these two idiots have feelings for one another, but Crosshair makes sure that Tech and Wrecker don’t kark things up for their big brother. Hunter needs to come to the conclusion on his own.
They’re constantly touching one another. Ilani rests her hand on Hunter’s back as she scoots past him in the Marauder; he bumps her with his elbow when he cracks a joke that she deadpans at. She casually brushes hair out of his eyes once and he nearly short-circuits.
Hunter appreciates that Ilani doesn’t feel the need to fill every silence with chatter, unlike some Jedi (Skywalker). He often finds himself sitting near her when she meditates before and after missions. Studying her features, wondering what she’s meditating on, wondering if she can sense the way his heart leaps when he imagines just leaning over and— He gets up quickly, retreating before he does something stupid.
They still argue, tempers flaring when they disagree on how best to complete a mission; these spats typically end with both of their chests heaving and funny feelings in their stomachs, like...butterflies?
NSFW HCs:
It’s actually after one such argument, about something pointless, that everything comes to a head. Hunter had gotten in her face, the pair of them nearly the same height, anger etched into every line on his face. Ilani had her teeth bared, but Hunter is closer to her than he’s ever been, and her eyes inadvertently drop to his lips for just a moment—but Hunter saw. And decided enough is enough.
They are the most intensely passionate lovers on their own, and together every moment of intimacy is incredibly sensuous. Between his enhanced senses and her own (thanks to her montrals), they both learn the other’s body, reactions, and tells quickly. At some point, all it takes for her to work him up is a series of featherlight touches and one very pointed look, and then he can’t wait to pin her to the wall and fuck her senseless.
Their sexual relationship, like their emotional one, is rather give-and-take. More often than not, Ilani ends up on top, riding Hunter for all she’s worth—but when he feels like it, he can easily grab her hips and change the pace. It infuriates her as much as it makes her lose her mind, falling apart for him with little effort.
It’s also not uncommon for their dalliances to oscillate between feverish, rushed fucking to slow and tender lovemaking, complete with eye contact and soft caresses of one another’s faces.

I would like to ship Amea and Rex, what are your thoughts on those two as a pairing?
Something just tells me they'd be super cute together 👀
Amea and Rex? Not only cute, I'm fairly sure Anakin and Padme would ship it.
-Padme finding out from Bail that Amea is working on a project to record clone culture becomes very passionate about the project, because she thinks it will be good for the eventual battle for their rights. Also because she and Anakin heard them talking (flirting) in the hall outside her senate office suite. She "suggests" to Anakin to take Amea with them so she can work with the clones.
-Rex refuses to allow her planetside unless it is a secure location. He doesn't give a kriff about documenting when it endangers her life. However he goes out of his way to make sure she can be there when it is what he deems "safe enough". Even if she has to stay within three feet of him.
-Rex is deeply confused when in the middle of a sleep cycle he wakes to find her in the mess with about fifty of his vode half covered in flour and teaching them to make pancakes. She hands him a spatula and shows him and a shiny at the same time how to know when and how to turn them over. Amea gives him a quick kiss and tells him , "Make GOOD memories,"
-They thrive on "quiet time together" he might be reviewing reports and she may be going over some notes she had taken but they are curled up together somewhere.
-Amea still somehow becomes besties with Fives. Rex acts like it annoys him, but he actually loves it.

Midday Blooms - Dandelions
So, while I was considering what to do with this, I realized that I could do a series of snippets, based in this AU, with various different ships. So this is the start of Rex x OC. tagging: @starrrgazingbunny
Dandelions
Coruscant, Lower Level
Abandoned Czerka Warehouse
“Someday, Rune,” Grandmother Angel whispered in a hoarse voice, “Someday the people will return from the Station, and Coruscant will flourish. Like it did in the past!”
“So you keep saying, grandma, but they abandoned Coruscant when you were still a little girl,” Rune pointed out, as she carefully poured her grandmother a cup of hot water, and flavored it with some dandelion petals. “It seems to me that they’re never really going to come back.”
Her grandmother places a gentle hand on her head, “They still fight, Rune. You’ve seen the men.”
Right. The men.
Large men in protective armor fighting the Sith Aberrations that call Coruscant home. Large men who trampled gardens and flower beds like it was their right. How many pounds of food had been destroyed because the Soldiers from the space station decided that their gardens were a threat.
“If they really wanted to help, Grandmother, you would think that they’d stop destroying our food.”
Grandmother reached down and took Rune’s hand, “I can understand why they do, darling. They’re trying to starve out the Sith.”
“But it’s not the sith they’re starving, grandmother.” Rune pointed.
“They’re not starving us either. Not anymore.”
Rune made a face, she supposed that her grandmother had a point. Since they moved to the lower levels, and started hiding their gardens indoors, the Soldiers from Space haven’t been able to destroy their gardens.
“Now, enough of this sulking, darling.” Grandmother flashed a bright smile, and she lightly patted Rune’s cheek, “You said last night that you and Habit were going to see if you can salvage anything from the old tanks?”
“Yeah,” Rune pulled away and used an old cloth to pull her hair into a messy tail, “he thinks we might be able to make our own water filter. I saw the schematics he found, and it seems legit. Legit enough that I’m willing to try.”
Rune couldn’t overstate how much of a boon having a working water filter would be for the people living in the lower levels, and the much larger population that had been forced to relocate to the Works. It meant no more fighting Sith spawn for water. It meant less infections.
Grandmother frowned, “Just be careful, dear. The newest deployment from the Space Station landed last week, and the fighting is still going strong.”
“I know, Grandmother.” Rune smiled at her, “I’ll be okay.” She grabbed her pistols, weapons that had been ancient twenty years ago and could now be considered antiques, and strapped them to her legs. “Atom and Bliss will take care of you until I get back,” She said, mentioning her younger siblings.
“Oh, lovely.”
Rune smiled and slipped out from under the cloth that separated her home from the rest of the “homes” in the Old Czerka building. There were over 200 families living there.
And in the Works, there were, at least, another 1000 families. Though Rune was fairly sure that there were more. It wasn’t like anyone bothered to count the people who were left behind.
“There you are!” Rune glanced around for a moment, and then she smiled when she saw her friend hurrying over to her.
Habit was a twi'lek, with dark blue skin, and was covered in black tattoos. He claimed that the more Sith like he looked, the less likely the Sith Monsters would look at him.
Rune privately thought that he just wanted to get under his mother’s skin. “Am I late?” She asked, her gaze flicking up to the chrono in the center of the warehouse.
“Nah, I was super early.” Habit admitted, “Mother didn’t want to let me do this. She said I should stay home and watch over the younger kids. I had Rider do it instead.”
Rune squinted, Rider, she knew, had a nasty spice addiction and wasn’t actually allowed near her younger siblings. “By herself?” She asked.
“No. I told Griffon to help her.” Habit grinned, “I’m not that irresponsible, Ru. Come on.”
He absolutely was.
Still, Rune rolled her eyes dramatically, “Fine. Fine. Are we taking the lift to the old Senate Quarter?”
Habit was already shaking his head, “You haven’t heard? The Senate Quarter is overrun by aberrations right now. They’ll clear up in the couple of days, but we’ll be safer taking the lift from the Works to the Old Justicar sector.”
Rune hummed thoughtfully, mentally running through the map of the Works in her mind, and then she frowned, “I thought the fighting in the Justicar restarted last month.”
“They’ve moved to the old Duros sectors,” Habit reminded, before he glanced at a map under the chrono, “Oh, wait…the fighting has moved to the Nikto sector now.”
“If we stick to the Works, we can bypass the Justicar, Duros, and Nikto sectors,” Rune pointed out thoughtfully, “See, some of the old tunnels lead right to where the red-light sector used to be.”
Habit sucked his teeth for a moment, “Risky. The further away from the population center we get, the more likely we are to run into droids…or sith monsters. But…” He glanced at the map as well, “There haven’t been any reported sightings…”
“And it goes right through the gardens.” Rune said cheerfully.
Habit scoffed, “You just want to collect Dandelions.”
Rune stuck her tongue out at him, but didn’t bother to try and refute him.
He stared at the map for a moment, and then he sighed deeply, “Fine! You win! We’ll go and collect your dandelions as well as the parts we need!”
“Yes!”
Habit shook his head with a fond laugh, “You and your flowers. Come on, before it gets dark.”
**********
Captain Rex of the 501st had a list of a great many things that he liked.
Spending an excessive amount of time on Coruscant was not one of those things. Still, it was only three months, so he would tolerate it.
But he was going to bitch about it in the privacy of his own mind at the same time.
He eyed the sky, and made a face, though it was hidden behind his helmet. Coruscant was such a dreary planet. Why the people on the Station wanted to come back here was beyond him.
“Alright there, Captain?” High General Obi-Wan Kenobi asked as he walked over, with Commander Cody on his heels.
“Yes sir, just wondering if it’s going to rain.” Rex replied, turning his attention away from the miserable planet and onto the task at hand.
“Probably,” General Kenobi said with a sigh as he glanced at the sky as well, “The Climate Controls are either under sith control, or have been completely destroyed at this point.” He shook his head. “It’s a shame, really.”
“Sir, Captain Rex’s mission?” Commander Cody prodded, getting them back on track before they could get anymore distracted.
“Oh, yes.” General Kenobi smiled, he looked tired, but then they were hunting General Sky-...Darth Vader. “You and a squad of men are going to enter through the old Red Light District, and try to get to the Senate that way.”
Rex frowned, “We can’t go any other way?”
“There are some sort of Sith creatures blocking the way to the old Senate,” Cody informed, “We feel that this route is safer.”
“Alright. I’ll bring Jesse, Fives, and Echo.” Anymore and he ran the risk of attracting unwanted attention. Obviously Cody agreed, since he nodded once Rex gave him the names.
“I’ll let them know.” General Kenobi said, turning to walk away, before he paused, “Ah…one last thing. If you run into any Sith, you do not have permission to engage, do you understand Captain?”
“Yes sir.”
Obi-Wan nodded one more time, and walked away. Cody clasped Rex by the shoulder, and then walked after his General. They, no doubt, had a much harder job than he did.
He didn’t envy them in the slightest.
Rex released a quiet exhale, and then turned back to his gear. He better make sure that he’s prepared for anything that might happen.
An hour later, he drops down the opening that leads to the Red Light Sector, Jesse, Fives, and Echo on his heels.
Like every other sector of Coruscant, the Red Light sector was abandoned, though there was evidence that there had been vod’e there recently. Discarded weapons, broken pieces of armor, a whole tank that had been too damaged to try and salvage.
But there were other signs too.
Small footprints in dirt, small in the sense that they probably belonged to a woman, or a teenage boy. A broken necklace, well cared for and clean. A jacket, well worn, but recently torn to shreds.
Fives picked up the jacket, and held it on one finger, “There aren’t any people living on Coruscant, right?”
“Intel says that the only people still living on Coruscant are Sith.” Rex confirmed, as he eyed the jacket. “Be on guard, we might not be alone.”
“Copy that,” The four men slid into formation, and started moving a lot slower. No need to run the risk of injury, after all.
They continued their slow procession forward, and they were almost out of the Red Light District when there was a clatter.
The four men whipped around and aimed their rifles in the direction the noise came from.
“Come on out, we know you’re there!” Rex called.
There was silence for a long moment, and Rex was about to send Fives and Jesse forward, when there was a curse. “Okay! Okay. I’m coming out. Just. Don’t shoot me.”
A door cracked open, and then pushed open with a little more force, and a young woman poked her head out.
She was young, early twenties at her latest, with dark hair held out of her eyes with a cloth that had probably been white at one point. Her clothes were much the same, clean, but looked old and well worn.
“I thought people didn’t live on Coruscant,” Jesse asked, though he kept his rifle directed at the young woman.
“So did I,” Rex answered.
They watched as the young woman wiggled out of the building, and allowed the door to quietly shut behind her. She looked anxious, but her gaze seemed to dart to the ceiling, and to the dark spaces around them, as if searching for something.
“Who are you? How did you get to Coruscant?” Echo asked, after getting a nod from Rex.
She looked offended, “How did I-? I was born here!”
That-
Rex lowered his rifle, and he really looked at her. She was clearly not a Sith, hell she had a bunch of dandelions poking out of her pants pockets. “No one lives on Coruscant.” He said, but now he wasn’t so sure.
She lifted her chin, “Yeah? The Stationers tell you that?”
Rex’s heart sank into his stomach, “People were left behind.” It wasn’t a question, though maybe it should have been.
“Oh yeah. Lots of us.” Her lips curled, “We didn’t run.”
Rex’s mind ran through the prior years of the war. Of food stockpiles getting burned, and he sighed softly, and reached up to pull off his helmet, “We burned your food.”
She stared at him, oddly, like she hadn’t expected him to look like him. Rex was kind of worried about what the people on Coruscant thought of him and his brothers, “Yeah, you did.”
“My name is Rex. These are my brothers, Jesse, Fives, and Echo.” They removed their helmets as well, and her gaze darted from face to face, suspicion and surprise warring with each other. “What’s your name?”
*****************
“What’s your name?”
Rune hadn’t expected the soldiers to be men. It made it a lot harder to hate them. Especially since they had Coruscanti like names.
“...I’m Rune.” She said, her gaze locked on the blonde man’s face, as he seemed to be the leader, “You’re not supposed to be down here. The fighting is happening in the Nikto sector.”
“We’re trying to get to the old senate,” Jesse said.
Rune made a face, “There are less painful ways to kill yourself, you know.” She said, as she folded her arms awkwardly over her stomach.
They looked surprised, “No,” Echo said slowly, “We’re trying to get into the Old Senate Building,” He clarified.
“No one goes into the Old Senate Building,” Rune said slowly, as if she were talking to children, “Ever.”
“Then where are the Sith?” Jesse asked.
“Not in the Senate Building.” Rune countered, “We think they’re set up in the old Jedi Temple, but, again, no one goes there. It’s not safe. If there aren’t aberrations, then it’s droids.”
“Fuck,” Rex ran his hand over his head, “So, what are you doing down here.”
“Salvaging. I am trying to make a water purifier so we don’t have to fight aberrations for clean water.” Rune said, “The parts on the tanks you leave behind can help with that.”
“That’s why it looked like there was recent activity around the tank,” Fives murmured.
“Thought you were aberrations,” Rune admitted with a shrug. With any luck, Habit was already back at the Czerka building. If she had any good luck, they would let her go soon.
“What do we do, Captain?” Echo asked.
Rex stared at her, and Rune shifted uncomfortably. And then Rex sighed, “I’m sorry about this, but you need to come with us.”
“What? Why?” Rune asked, her eyes wide.
“You need to talk to our General.” Rex said, “You know more about the planet than we do, at least. And the Sith.”
“...do I have a choice?”
“I’m afraid not.” Rex genuinely sounded apologetic, “Will you come with us willingly, or do we need to use binders?”
She scowled, unhappy, “I’ll come. But I’m not leaving Coruscant.”
Rune allowed them to guide her out of the Red Light District, and to a speeder, which they then piloted to a massive ship. Rex dismissed his brothers, and instead guided her himself from there.
She had seen the Stationer Ships before, but hadn’t realized how large they were until she was being directed over to the ship. And, more specifically, over to a soldier wearing orange and a man wearing distinctly Jedi robes.
“Captain, welcome bac-” The jedi paused, mid sentence, and stared at Rune, and then over to Rex, with a questioning look.
“This is Rune. She lives on Coruscant.” Rex offered.
“I wasn’t aware that there were any people left on Coruscant,” The Jedi offered lightly.
“Why not, it’s not like the Jedi came back for us when you ran away.” Rune said flatly. “Or did you really think that the rich and powerful of Coruscant were going to evacuate the poor for nothing?”
He looked surprised, and then guilty. “Are there many of you?”
“Of course there are.” Rune replied.
“We can call for another ship, and start the evacuation process-” The Jedi said quietly.
“We’re not leaving.” Rune interrupted.
This time everyone looked surprised, “Rune. Coruscant is a warzone.” Rex said.
“Coruscant has been a warzone for generations. We stayed and so we’re going to stay.” Rune said flatly. “We’ve managed to survive and we will continue to do so.” She shifted her weight, “Can I go home now?”
“Wait, Miss Rune-” The Jedi said, a small smile crossing his face when she scrunched up her face, “We’re trying to get into the Senate building-”
Rune sighed, deeply, “I’ll tell you what I told him. You can’t. It was where whatshisface did his sith alchemy. No one goes in. If you’re looking for the Sith, I would start in the old Jedi temple.”
“The old Jedi-...” The Jedi looked down at the map, “Yes. Yes, of course. That makes sense.”
“Can I go now?” Rune repeated.
“What? Oh, yes. Yes. Of course. Rex, will you escort her home?”
“Of course General.”
**************
Whatever Rex had been expecting of Rune’s home, it wasn’t this.
He expected gloom, and dirty. Something depressing to look at, let alone live in.
And yet-
There were plants everywhere. Gardens on every corner filled with different types of crops, and massive gardens filled with a wide variety of flowers.
The people were healthy, clearly healthy. And there were dozens of children, of all races, who chased after Rex as he walked through the clearly marked streets.
“Not what you were expecting?” Rune asked, as she handed a bundle of dandelions to a girl who looked remarkably like her.
“No. Not at all,” Rex looked around, “This is…I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“Everything we grow has a use.” Rune offered, “Most of the garden plots are for food, though anything that has flowers is generally medicinal. And in the Works we managed to create a fish farm. It’s how we keep the obligate carnivores healthy.” She added, as she nodded to a family of Togruta.
“...where’d the Dandelions come from?” Rex asked, noting that she still had one of them in her pocket.
“They grow between some of the sectors,” Rune explained, she twisted the flower between her hands, “They’re my favorite.”
“Why?”
“Well. They remind me of me, of my people.” Rune smiled at the flower, “We endure, even if no one wants us to.”
Rex was quiet for a moment, his mind going to stark white halls, and harsh training, “I can understand that.”
Rune regards him quietly for a moment, and then she smiles, and she steps into his personal space, and carefully attaches the flower to his chest piece. “There.”
“You’re giving me your flower?”
“Like me, Rex, you have the soul of a weed.”
Rex blinked at her, touched. That might be the sweetest thing a woman had ever said to him.
And then she smiled at him, her face slightly pink, “You can’t stay here, this isn’t your world. But it would be cool if you visited every now and then?”
Rex stared at her, speechless for a moment, and then he ducks his head, shyly, “Well. Us weeds have to stick together, right?”
She grinned at him, “Absolutely.”
When Rex left half an hour later, he had a bag full of fresh fruit, a dandelion attached to his chest plate, and a piece of flimsy with Rune’s comm address on it.

A soft ringing began to fill Veras ears as she slowly wakes up from deep within her dreams. The sound became clearer as she pulled herself into consciousness, gently tapping the power button on her alarm clock.  "Hmph", she rolls over, checking out the other side of the bed to make sure HE wasn't there, -sigh- "thank the stars". After last nights... activities, she was trying hard not to...well, have him end up in her bed. Which was shocking to say the least because they were both very, VERY drunk and mostly flirty but, she knew the commander wouldn't push limits and honestly that was one of the things that she appreciated most about him. He's a gentleman, very polite, funny, responsible and possibly checked all the boxes but for some reason, she didn't have that initial spark like she did when she first saw Rex. Who knows, maybe after her decision today she might be able to see him again which was something she kinda looked forward to. All she had to do now is ACTUALLY get up and get ready before Cody comes back to take her to the GAR.
The cold air outside the blanket was of no help to her trying getting out of bed however, she needed to. Thus was deemed her first mission; "I need to get ready before he picks me up". She slowly rolled up and sat at the edge of her bed, gently putting her hands on her thighs- basking in the morning sun. Her bedroom consisted of one large single pane window about the size of a wall and a large king sized bed directly in the center of the room with nothing else but a mirror. Her and her sister lived a simple but elegant life and held those standards growing up. She sat at the edge of her bed taking in the warm sunlight, gathering her thoughts and preparing her mind for the day. Her skin was already a deep olive tone but the morning sunrise made her glow like sweet Corellian caramel. "I feel different..", she admitted, standing up realizing she somehow managed to get into her nightgown after last nights... events. "Strange... I don't remember putting these on..", and there she stood in her navy blue satin nightgown, the straps gently descending down her shoulders disappearing in her wavy strands of hair falling from her loose updo. She walked to the mirror next to her closet and gazed at herself.... Aside from the obvious, her bottom lip had a small cut that nearly looked healed, remembering that Cody had put bacta cream on the wound earlier that night before they cooked dinner. "He was so gentle.." she whispered, lightly touching the rim of the cut grinning as she began reminiscing about her moment with him.
When he sat her down on the edge of the couch gently applying the cream to her wound there was a moment they met each others gaze and just stared. She didn't know how long but she knew that at that present time but it didn't matter. There was a warmth to Cody that she had never felt before and a comfort that wrapped around her constricting her deepest breath but if only she knew.. that the feeling was mutual.
Despite both their strict rules on relationships, that quickly ended with their intimate moment and the more she thought about it, still standing in the mirror; Her entire life was filled with serving her people. There was always rules that barred her from even basic social standards. So having some care for her in this way, without them knowing about her true identity, made her smile. Since she often kept to herself and did not have any friends, having that moment with him changed her perspective in ways that she herself didn't understand and that was something she was okay with.
As Vera went to grab her brush, she heard scuffling in the living room. The sound made her freeze. "What the...", she slowly cautioned to the door opening it inch by inch to peak who was there, thinking about where the closest weapon would be in case things went sour. When she managed to get enough leeway to see, she quickly opened the door all the way, "CODY?!", she shouted. The pony tail had already fallen out of her hair as she stood there in her very alluring nightgown observing the commander with two cups of caf in hand. He was dressed in his blacks with his armor stacked neatly by the couch having evidence, like a blanket and a pillow, pointing to his extended stay. "Um, I...-I um... made some caf....was that... okay?", he said as both their cheeks began to flush. He couldn't help but stare, she was beautiful to look at- no.. more than that, she was stunning. Thoughts began to courtesy its way through his brain, making it harder to compose himself. Her beauty was beyond any other woman he had seen. Her long black wavy hair and golden yellow eyes sparkled like a gem and the way the sun hit her skin… He froze in place realizing that each breath he took was chasitized the closer she got.
"I.. wait.. what? Why are you still here? You're supposed to pick me up in like an hour..", She said walking down the few steps that lead up to her bedroom to meet the commander face to face. She lifted the straps on her grown and folded her arms to cover her breasts. She felt very bare but sooner realized their comfortability with each other. He set the glasses down on the side table, regaining his composure and began to explain himself. "Im not sure if you remember but..", he leaned against the couch trying hard not to make eye contact, "Well.... we drank... a lot and you offered for me to stay. I took you up on the offer because I couldn't manage to make it to the door myself-". She was baffled and even giggled a bit because last night got way out of hand and it was funny to think about. "-eventually I got my armor off and fell asleep on the couch".
Although she would never offer a sleep over to a person she doesn't quiet know, she surely remembered having that conversation with him. "You're right Im sorry, I forgot. I don't normally let people I just met to sleep over..", she looked down realizing she was still in her nightgown as her cheeks turned a darker red. The gown itself barely contained her curves, her butt poked out just a little from under the fine silk and her breasts were plump enough to spill out from the hemmed v cut.. Honestly, she was lucky her hair was long enough to cover such areas. "I- I should probably get changed-", she stuttered fully embarrassed from the odd interaction they just had and right before she turned back to her room, he grabbed her hand. Everything fell silent as she looked back at him slowly approaching her, gently holding her hand in his, gripping it just a little tighter indicating his need.
Veras heart raced as butterflies began to tingle in her stomach and maybe even a bit lower. "Thank you for last night, I appreciate your kindness meshl'a". She ignored the fact that she still didn't know what that meant and was a bit more irritated that even after last night she still didn't get her answer but never mind that, she was more curious about the sudden change in affection. The early morning sunrise changed the tone and impulse had never been stronger. Despite not knowing what to say she wanted something else, something more. She stepped up to him, putting her hand on his chest, "No commander... thank you", she said softly, "for everything-". The words that rolled off her lips, filled with lust as she meets his soft look, "I would've been in a lot of trouble if it wasn't for you. I owe you my life commander", and hugged him, letting go slightly- still shying her body away.
The commanders blood began to race as he cautiously puts one of his hands on her waist feeling the silk fabric between his fingers, gazing upon her hourglass body- looking straight into her eyes as they got closer and closer, their lips inches from each other. Once he gained enough courage he threw his responsibility out the window and placed his other hand on her waist gripping the love handles that she was hiding under the gown. He squeezed just a little before proceeding, silently asking if what they were about to do next was okay. She released her arms from her chest, as she slowly found herself falling into the rabbit hole of curiosity and slowly began to slide her hand up his abdomen feeling every built muscle and scar up to his chest. The wonder of what each scar represented and the story behind it was intriguing but never mind that, she was genuinely curious about his body as she gripped a small piece of fabric and began to tug. She couldn't help but wonder if this was the right choice but the heat growing in between her thighs took control of her mind. She desired him...
"Vera..", he whispered under his breath, both his hands gripping her waist tighter indicating his need for her. He didn't want to push past his limits thus letting her decide the next move. She brushed her hair to one side of her shoulder, revealing her chest to him. He looked down seeing the plump mounds rising each breath she took, begging to be touched as he felt himself twitch with anticipation. She took a step forward and pressed herself up against him; body on body, feeling his growing bulge against her center as she felt herself dripping, wanting all of him inside her. She got on the tip of her toes and kissed him, deeper and deeper as she slowly began to wrap her arms around his neck. He finally let his guard down as he began sliding his hands behind her, tightly gripping the mounds behind her that swelled for him... showing what she was getting into.
She began to ask herself what she was doing. Mainly because she's never gone past this point with anyone before despite the many suitors who begged for her attention but the second he gripped her from behind nothing else mattered. She was driven by an entirely new entity, picturing Rex as the perpetrator.
She felt the peak of her breast begin to harden the more he grabbed her as she pressed up against his chest showing him how he made her feel... Cody well, his restraint began to weaken. The blood coursed through his body making his need grow harder and while what was happening is great, he wanted more. He lifted her onto him as she wrapped her legs around his waist, grinding on him in mid air. There was no bliss sweeter than this. Their kisses grew deeper and deeper as Cody slowly began walking them to the couch.  He laid her down and although they were still lost in the kissing, he began to spread her thighs and continued pushing them up by he shoulders to make leeway to her center. He slowly pushing into her, mimicking what could be.
Despite having clothes on, Vera could feel herself pooling. If this feels good, sex will too and she's been waiting for the right person to share that with but she couldn't help but wonder if Cody is the right person. However, she knew if it wasn't meant to be the Gods would let her know and since nothing seemed unordinary she believed that maybe this was her moment. She finally let herself go.
"Commander I...-", she softly moaned while he began kissing her neck, bringing his hand up to knead at her breasts, testing the sensitive buds that he so desperately wanted in his mouth.
"What is it Meshl'a?", he slides his free hand down pulling her nightgown up touching the bare skin of her abdomen.
"I... I want-", she moaned again as his fingers slid in between her panties playing at her slick. She gasped as her eyes rolled to the back of her head grinding against his fingers.
"Speak up meshl'a... Tell me what you want". He commanded in husky voice that drove her off the edge. She wanted this man so bad even though she knew she shouldn't. She was so captivated by his movements that it almost became unbearable. He played and teased her as a faint beeping started to fill their ears. She began to mutter, unable to control her thoughts.
"I.. I want... you", the beeping continued getting louder pulling them out of something they could never come back from. He stopped and shot his head up grasping the concept that time was not their ally and most importantly... it was General Kenobi pinging his comm, "dammit...", he got up and ran to his armor picking up the call;
"General-",
"Ah, Cody I was beginning to think you weren't going to answer. I hope you're on your way to pick up the Doctor?", His heart was still racing as he took a second to gather his bearings before exhaling with an answer.
He turns to look at Vera peeking over the top of the couch, "Yes General, I am on my way there right now.",
"Good, we will wait for your arrival",
"Yes Sir...",
He looked at her dumbstruck that they just spent the past hour violating all sorts of codes, even personal ones. He needed to regain himself because being a commander means responsibility and all of that went out the door the moment he spent the night there. He couldn't help but admit to himself that it was worth it. She was worth it.
"Vera-", he said gently as he watched her get up to fix her nightgown. The glimpse of her body from behind made him want to come up with the best excuse of why they were late and there was a moment he almost did.
"I know commander-", She started to walk towards the door to her bedroom and before she walked in, she looked back with a small grin, "10 minutes... sir",  and proceeded to get changed. 'damn..', he thought 'what a fine woman', as he slowly gripped the bulge that grew even harder.
After a few moments, Cody calmed down and began to put on his armor. The cod piece was the hardest for him. Although it was still throbbing for her, it didn't seem like it was going away which was frustrating to say the least but he needed to because they were due at the GAR 5 minutes ago. He forced himself in, experiencing all sorts of discomfort as he continued putting himself back together piece by piece.
After he readied himself, he sat on a chair in Vera's kitchen fully composed, she came out of her room in a burnt yellow tunic, black pants and brown boots. Despite her relatively plain outfit, she was still electrifying, "You ready to go doc?" he smiled heading to open the front door for her.
"I am commander... Are you?", she winked blushing just enough for Cody to catch on
"yes-", he said hustling her out of the door. They headed towards his speeder, quickly hopping on and readjusting positions for comfort, "Hold on tight doc, were kinda late...", Cody said throwing his helmet on as he gripping the handles on the speeders
"yeah I wonder why.." she smirked as she slid her hands around his waist. He shot a sly grin as he put on his helmet and began to speed off into the distance towards the GAR.
-
Vera stood in front of the door where she first met the Jedi thinking about Codys sound advice before he dropped her off; "Don't worry about what the future will bring it will always be undetermined. What you do in the moment impacts the time ahead. Stay in the present." She knew very well what he meant, her biggest flaw was overthinking and it made her smile that even in the little amount of time they spent together, he was still able to notice such things. She let out a small giggle realizing the words he said, sending a shift of confidence in her. She slowly reached for the green button next to the door; closing her eyes and began to realize that this was the first critical decision she had ever made that directly impacts her life and even her sister's. However... something about it~ felt right.

For Freedom and Our Brothers Prologue (Captain Rex x OC)

warnings: communal showers, swearing

The showers were relatively hot this time, a relief to the soldiers and general who were indulging in the soothing properties of the water after a rough battle. To Linn's left was Jekyll who silently worked on scrubbing down, ignoring the chatter of his brothers. And to her right was Commander Fritz who was keeping the conversation flowing between the exhausted brothers.
A loud peal of laughter rippled through the gathered men just as Linn reached to scrub the caked on sand off of her legs and she couldn't help but offer a tiny grin at the sound of her men relaxing.
Her shower passed by uneventfully, the men had quieted down - focused on their own task of scrubbing down and Linn soon found herself turning off the water to wrap a towel around her torso. She wasn't the first one to finish showering - Jekyll had beat her to it and now stood by the large mirror, shaving cream on his face. Linn joined him to clean her face.
"Hey, Ice," Linn's head snapped up at the call, soap suds still covering her face to meet the gaze of one of her younger soldiers - Boom, "I heard the 501st was in the area, you know anything about that?" He asked while securing his towel around his waist.
She looked away from the mirror, returning to the task of cleaning her face - all too aware that the collective attention of the men was now on her. "Not really," she started slowly, speaking between passes of her washcloth over her face, "I thought they'd be en route to Coruscant after Kamino."
"Oh yeah," Fritz spoke up, stepping up to the mirror himself to shave like his brother, "Kamino sounded like a hell of a fight."
"We should have been there." Jekyll piped up, flicking shaving cream into the sink. "Kamino's-"
Linn sighed, "Jek, we've been over this."
"I'm just saying-"
"Jekyll, we were already engaged when the attack started. There was no way we could've pulled out and made it to Kamino in time." With a hand on the edge of the sink, Linn met his eye - a stony look in hers. He met her gaze unflinchingly.
"Besides," Fritz laid a hand on his brother's shoulder, a scheming look in his eye, "the 501st got it covered." Jekyll's face twisted into a grimace so potent it turned comical and prompted his brothers to start laughing. "Lighten up, vod." Fritz beamed at his angry brother, clapping his shoulder harder than necessary before he returned to shaving his face.
Linn raised a hand in truce, offering a handshake to the angry lieutenant. He eventually shook it, letting the matter rest once more.
"Damn them fivers," Boom continued, leaning a shoulder on the wall just beside the mirror, "can't believe half of the osik I hear about them."
"Well, believe it, shiny." Fritz huffed, "Craziest sons of bitches I ever met." He muttered while starting to pack up his stuff.
"You've met them?" Boom asked in disbelief.
Fritz shrugged. "Had a few rounds with Captain Rex 'while back. Told me more than I'd ever like to know." Tightening his towel, Fritz turned to the younger man. "I consider us lucky we haven't had to run a mission with them."
"Why? They seem like a riot."
"Cause their general's insane." Jekyll muttered under his breath. And Linn found herself agreeing with him as she rubbed her moisturizer in.
Boom snorted, "They're a Jedi."
"You've met Ice." Fritz didn't miss a beat and Linn found herself sending him a glare in the reflection. He flashed her a toothy grin in reply.
When Boom turned his curious gaze to her, Linn relented. "The 501st is commanded by Anakin Skywalker - the most reckless Jedi to ever exist." She explained simply, picking up her things as she got ready to head back to her room aboard the ship.
"More reckless than you, vod?" Jekyll jabbed this time and as if the servant of some cosmic comedic timing, the blaster burn on her side began to prickle once more. She didn't suffer an answer and instead ducked into a changing stall to dress.
The laughter of the brothers echoed behind her as she shut the door and changed back into her robes in record timing. As she clipped her lightsaber to her hip, Linn finally stepped out and excused herself from the brothers.
Upon reaching her room, Linn set her fresher bag aside and started on her relaxing routine only to be interrupted by a chirping comm. A heavy sigh slipped past her pale lips but she reached for the comm all the same and keyed it on.
"Master Yoda!" She gasped in surprise, immediately bowing her head to the small hologram in her palm.
"At ease, be, Master Mineleat." Yoda's froggy voice croaked out. "New orders, have I, for you."
"Of course, Master." Linn settled, allowing the Jedi master room to talk.
He bowed his head. "To planet Zeffo, you must go. Growing, separatist interest, is." Linn's own head tilted to the side. "Fear, I do, separatist influence, on the people."
"I understand, Master." Linn acknowledged, bowing her head once more. "I'll set a course immediately. It'll take us a few days to get back onto the Veragi Trade Route but we should be able to get there within the week."
"Very Good, Master Mineleat." Yoda hummed. "One thing more, I have, for you." At Linn's prompting nod, he continued. "Joining you, Skywalker, will be. Already on the way, the 501st is."
Linn was silent for a moment, stewing in shock. "I see..." She finally choked out. "Forgive me, master, but if this is just a courtesy visit to reestablish relations, why are we being joined?"
"Nothing to forgive, next steps together, you must be ready for. A test, this is. To see if Skywalker and you work together, well, hmm." Yoda finished and Linn felt her trepidation spike.
"I...understand, Master Yoda." She finally sighed. She didn't like the thought of having to work with the young Jedi. But, the will of Master Yoda was stronger than any argument she could come up with. "Is there anything else?"
"Nothing more to say, have I. Rest, Master Mineleat. A long journey lies ahead." Bidding the grand master goodbye, Linn keyed the comm off and fell onto her bed with an exaggerated huff. Fantastic. She thought bitterly.
Raising her comm once more, she contacted the bridge. "Bridge, this is General Mineleat. We've had a change of plans. Get us back on the Veragi Trade Route. We're heading to Zeffo."

Rex didn’t like places like that. Dark, unknown, dangerous. One of his hands was resting on his DC-17 hand blaster ready as always. He was focused on any weird noises, movements from that dark forest ahead of him and whatever the hell this place would bring at him. When Organa told him he has a mission for him, he wouldn’t expect to be in a place like this. On a planet so secluded that even he didn’t know about it before. There was no one leaving here. Except some monsters forgotten even by the Maker himself. But apparently Rebel’s informant lived here and had some interesting things to talk about. Things that couldn't be transferred through the holo-call. And so Organa sent Rex, the most trusty of the soldiers, to retrieve the message and help in whatever this forsaken informant needed him to do. He didn’t like it, but hell, he didn’t like most of the missions Anakin took, but he did them anyway.
It still felt weird to act on its own. It wasn’t that long ago when Order 66 happened. Ahsoka left not that later on, mentioning something about finding her way back. He didn’t ask, knowing that it wasn’t his place to. Not like she wouldn’t have told him. They were friends, but he just didn’t want to force her into relying on something she just wasn’t comfortable with.
And so they parted ways. She went somewhere…and Rex was picked up by Organa to work with him on saving those that still believed in the Republic. And save his brothers from under the influence of the Empire. The Captain was thankful to the senator for what he did, knowing well how dangerous it was for him and his family. Especially, after he just adopted a little girl. And yet, Organa was a shadow that the Republic needed. Someone powerful enough to help them, but not power hungry to get in the way of their success.
“You are distracted, Captain”, he froze in place hearing a mechanical voice behind him and a knife pointed straight at his neck. That one place that was not protected by his armor. He cursed under the nose. He didn’t know how the figure was able to surprise him like that. He didn’t hear anything, no movements, no actions, no breathing. It was like whoever it was, was a well-trained agent. “Don’t stop now, let’s keep on moving.” And so he kept on walking with a knife still pointed at him. He tried to turn just a bit to look at his attacker, but it was stopped before any real action would happen. The figure was no one to trick or play around with.
“Who are you?” He asked, after a while, when they kept on moving. They turned enough times to make Rex lose any signs of direction. It was definitely the stranger’s goal. No to mention that he really did not like the fact that whoever it was, they knew who he was. He made sure to be dead to the Empire, which was very convincing in the work he did now. “Just so you know, killing me will not be as easy as sneaking up on me.” He raised his brow and the figures deep, mechanical chuckles. The Trooper was sure that the stranger was using some kind of voice modifier.
“Not too far now, Captain. I promise you, my plans for you are much worse than that.” Despite the words the figure spoke were dangerous, Rex did not feel at risk. It was something about the way they spoke that put him almost at peace. It was absurd, he knew, but the irrational part of him felt… comforted.
They stopped at once in the middle of nowhere and before he was able to ask yet another question, the figure clicked something on their arm and the ground just opened. A base. An underground base of some sort. If they themselves weren’t weird enough, this definitely was. If no one was living on that forsaken Planet, then why a base like that. “Cool, right?” He raised his brow at the figure and sighed, not answering at all. The stranger pushed him forward slightly and the moment they entered, the ground closed itself and he was met with a long corridor of…. Nothingness. The stranger clicked something on the code system and there was light.
“I hate that damn cloak, not to mention that stupid modifier!” It was the second time this weird someone made Rex freeze in place today. This time, however, because Rex knew that voice. Why did he know that voice? Not feeling the blade of the knife on his neck anymore, he turned around, stuck with a face he was sure not to see ever again in his life.
Almost 4 years before:
“I’ve never met a princess”, Fives smirked at his twin, making Rex roll his eyes. He knew that tone already. And this was what he was afraid of, when he decided to take his two new troopers for that mission. Fives and Echo were incredibly talented soldiers, and as much as Rex did not have to worry about the latter one, the first one on the other hand was a handful.
“Senator Amidala was a Queen”, Kix pinpointed making Anakin smirk at his soldiers. He never expected that he would ever be sent to a mission like that. But considering he just got his new Padawan, maybe something like that would be good for her. A small mission with just a couple of soldiers along.
“Yeah, but I met her when she was a Senator, doesn’t count.” Fives muttered and Ashoke snickered at the boys, looking at his Master. She was surprised Skywalker was accepting this kind of mission. It seemed so out of place for the 501st. But she did remember Master Windu’s words how the mission was “as important as any other on the battlefield”.
“Fives”, Rex started, turning towards the soldier. “Do me a favor and do not speak when not asked to, understood?”
“Yes Sir!” he muttered, trying to ignore the snickers from his brothers, elbowing Echo who was the closest to him.
“It is a different mission than what we are used to, but Yith may become a strong ally to the Republic and we need to make sure that they will join us.” Anakin muttered, stopping in front of the castle, hearing Ashoka’s  whistle under her breath. Yes Yith despite being a small planet, their king was a smart ruler that used what was the best in the Planet and made it an important player in any economical and political aspects. Yes, Yith was important for both the Republic and Separatists.
“You must be the Jedi Master that the King expects!” He looked at a soldier in a gray, light armor, with a blaster and some kind of blaster on his side. He looked young, but who was he to judge someone by their age? Ahsoka was still a kid and yet she was a force to be reckoned with.
“Yes. I’m Jedi General Anakin Skywalker. This is my Padawan Ashoka Tano, and my soldiers from the 501st with my right hand Captain Rex.” The soldier looked around and smiled softly at all of them and nodded.
“Thank you for not bringing too many of your people, Master Jedi.” He countered, asking them to follow him. Yith is a small planet that doesn’t want to get too much negative attention.” Skywalker nodded, knowing that the planet didn't really have a huge army on its own. Their King was far from being a pacifist, but he did want to rule differently to his father and grandfather who believed that the army is the most important thing. “The King and the Princess are already waiting for you.” He showed the throne room and opened the door. The room was big, but as big as he expected from the size of the whole castle. It was also decorated specifically in any way. But there were two thrones in the end of the room. The bigger one where a middle-aged man was sitting and another one with a Princess.
Rex glared at Fives, after hearing him whistle. But if he was being honest, he couldn’t blame him. The rumors that the Princess is a beauty were true. Her long auburn hair was tight into a plait that flew down her shoulders. She wore a dress that automatically screamed Princess. She wore some make-up but not enough to hide her natural beauty. Before he could, however, stare any longer, his eyes caught the figure behind the Princess. A hooded someone, with a bow on their back and the same kind of spear, the soldier that greeted them had. They just stood there, not even looking up when they walked in. He frowned but didn’t say anything else.
They all bowed, kneeling in front of the King, who stared at the group. Anakin once again introduced them all and Rex felt someone’s eyes on him, but he couldn’t decipher who’s eyes they were. He looked to their brothers and relaxed a bit, seeing them stiff as well. Apparently it wasn’t just him being paranoid.
“Please stand up, my friends!” The King said, smiling at them all. “You have my thanks for coming all this way to our small Planet”. Rex read that the ruler was loved by almost everyone, except his own brother who was doing all he could to take over the throne, which was also why they were here. “Master Jedi, you probably know why I called in here?”
“You need help with your brother”, Anakin answered, smirking slightly at the brushing Princess, who couldn’t help but look at Fives, who not caring about anything was just staring right back at her. “We will do what we can, but I need to ask one thing, Your Majesty.”
“Why didn’t I ask the Separatists first?” The Jedi nodded. “I do not go along with their ideologies. I am not saying that I agree with everything the Republic does, but if I have to support a side, I am definitely by your side.” Hearing this made everyone relax a bit. “And just so you know. We would gladly support you, even if you decide not to help us.”
“We would be honored to help with whatever there is for us!” Ashoka interjected, ignoring the glare from her Master.
“Oh, your Padawan, does speak her mind, doesn’t she?” The KIng chuckled, looking softly at the girl. “Then she would find a common ground with my daughter, then.” Anakin’s eyes landed on the Princess, and he could not imagine that timid girl speaking her mind. He noticed a small smile sent to FIves and he stopped himself from rolling his eyes.
“Yes, just like my Padawan” Anakin started, underlining Ashoka’s rank, “was nice enough to mention, we would be honored to help with whatever you have us to do.” The King smiled and he looked at the four soldiers behind the Jedi. Rex realized that despite the warm and welcoming nature, there was something about the King that brought respect. His eyes shined with knowledge and natural intelligence. And something else that Rex later on realized was fear for his own daughter.
“I think we can trust them, my sweet girl. Don’t you think so?” They all frowned when he spoke to the figure standing behind the Princess, who stopped smiling at Fives and her stern face of a monarch was back. Rex’ eyes widened, when the figure took their hood off and they were met by a beautiful, red headed, young woman. Her hair in a high ponytail, a mask covering half of her face. She took it off and they were met with the real beauty of Yith. The real Princess of the Planet. “Apologies, Master Skywalker, Padawan Tano, dear soldiers of 501st. But to ensure the safety of my only daughter, I hope you understand why that was necessary.” They all were still looking at the girl, who now changed place with the girl, who they presumed to be the Princess. She put her bow and spear away and sat next to her father, smiling welcomingly to the group. “Please meet, Nia Ganila, the Princess of Yith.”
The Presence:
“It’s good to see you, Captain!” the girl, no, not anymore a girl. A young woman smiled at him. Her long, red hair falling from her hooded clock onto her shoulder, her cat-like green eyes staring at him.
“You’re alive!” Was all Rex was able to say.
