Long Story Short - Serena Kaylor
Tumblr media
Growing up homeschooled in Berkeley, California, Beatrice Quinn is a statistical genius who has dreamed her whole life of discovering new mathematical challenges at a school like Oxford University. She always thought the hardest part would be getting in, not convincing her parents to let her go. But while math has always made sense to Beatrice, making friends is a problem she hasn’t been able to solve, so her parents are worried about sending her halfway across the world. The compromise: the Connecticut Shakespearean Summer Academy and a detailed list of teenage milestones to check off. She has six weeks to show her parents she can pull off the role of "normal" teenager and won't spend the rest of her life hiding in a library. Unfortunately, hearts and hormones don't follow any rules, and there is no equation for teenage interactions. When she's adopted by a group of eclectic theater kids, and immediately makes an enemy of the popular—and, annoyingly gorgeous—British son of the camp founders, she realizes that relationships are trickier than calculus. With her future on the line, this girl genius stumbles through illicit parties, double dog dares, and more than your fair share of Shakespeare. But before the final curtain falls, will Beatrice realize that there’s more to life than she can find in the page of a book?
tw: anxiety/social anxiety, dub con, toxic relationships

Book Review #65 of 2022--
Tumblr media
Long Story Short by Serena Kaylor. Rating: 3.5 stars.
Read from May 27th to 28th.
Before I get into the review, a quick thank you to both NetGalley and the publishers over at Wednesday Books for allowing me to have an ARC of this one in exchange for an honest review. Long Story Short is a summer camp story about a genius who is forced to go to camp in order to prove to her parents that she’s ready to go to college at Oxford in the Fall. Beatrice is a 16 year old genius with her acceptance letter in hand and her bags halfway packed. But her parents are unwilling to ship their only daughter overseas without proof that she’s emotionally, and socially, prepared to fly the nest. They come up with a compromise: attend a four week, theater summer camp, and Oxford is hers for the taking. Thrown into all new experiences at every turn, can Beatrice survive the summer? Long Story Short comes out on July 26th and is available for pre-order now.
I don’t normally like starting reviews with the negative, but I really want to point out that I think most of the reason for my rating is due to me not being in the target audience age range. I’m almost 33 and I feel like this book is targeted for people half my age. So, while my opinions could be valid in some ways, I do acknowledge that this might not be the perfect book for me because I’m not the perfect audience for the book. I thought Beatrice was too similar to Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory to take seriously at first. She always wore the same clothes (so she wouldn’t have to think about it and could focus on the work) and the same foods every single week. I feel like I know what the writer was trying to accomplish, but as our main character quoted from Walt Whitman, “I contain multitudes.” And in the beginning it really felt like she didn’t. She was so flat. I can understand having one bad social experience as a child and having that impact you as a teenager. I don’t understand how that translates into her having no really interests outside of academia. I think it would have been so easy to add in before she goes to a Shakespearean summer camp that she loves Shakespeare and knows his works backwards and forwards. Just anything other than academia 24/7.
I will say that as the book progressed we really saw Beatrice come out of her shell and develop into a more well-rounded person. I liked that she still struggled because no one changes over night. But I liked seeing her blossom as the story developed. I loved her friends Nolan and Mia. I wish we had gotten a little more from them. The love interest though. I love that he willingly admits to his mistakes and that he acknowledges that he can do better and then strives to actually do better. Also, the teenagers did feel very teenager-y to me so the authenticity was there in this one. An unexpected thing that I really enjoyed was the two main characters doing Shakespeare trivia against each other. Like, sometimes theater kids are just like that, you know? And it was a lot of fun to see what quotes they would challenge the other person with and try to tease apart what kind of message they were trying to send with it.
Overall, this is a fun and quick YA Rom-Com and I enjoyed it taking place at a Shakespeare summer camp. I think it’s a great read for a YA (or YA adjacent) audience or for the Shakespeare fan in your life.

Thanks so much to NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of "Long Story Short" by Serena Kaylor, scheduled to release on July 26th, 2022!
This novel follows sixteen year old Beatrice, who has been homeschooled her entire life and is somewhat of a genius - at the very least, she is a gifted child. She is able to apply to Oxford and ends up getting in, much to her surprise. Her parents do not take the news well - and not just because she blurts it out in the middle of a dinner party with her parents' friends and son present. They are deeply worried for Beatrice because while she is very academically intelligent, her social skills do not reflect those of a typical teenager. Her parents are very reluctant to let her experience what else the world has to offer at such a young age. So they sign her up for a Shakespeare theater camp with a list of conditions that must be met by the end of the month. Once she arrives and slowly starts to make friends, they too add some additional tasks for her to complete before the end of the summer as well.
Overall, I would rate this book a 3.5/5 stars!

The Love Blackout "It's all part of the f*cking story"
Ok, this is gonna be a long post. But hopefully, this will help you understand this very important piece of Kaylor evidence and explain LSK a bit better too.
PS: I'm new to Tumblr, while doing my research I'll tag those post/blogs but I don't know if there's anything else I should do, let me know!
Love Blackout Meaning
So all this Love Blackout discourse comes from those Glitch lyrics:
"But it's been 2190 days of out love blackout, the system's breaking down"
First, let's start by looking at what Love Blackout is supposed to mean:
Tumblr media
"A suppression of information, especially one imposed on the media by the government"
Interesting... a suppression of information imposed on the medias 🤔
Like not being seen/papped together by the medias??? Maybe.
2190 days
Knowing Taylor, she wouldn't use 2190, a very specific number, for it to mean nothing would she??
So what does 2190 days means in years? It's 6 years:
Tumblr media
Didn't she recently talked about a relationship, 6 years AND the medias recently?:
Yes! In her Lavender Haze Instagram Reel! The same where she talked about that scene in Mad Men 🤔
"If the world finds out that you are in love with somebody, they are gonna weight in on it"
"Like my relationship FOR 6 years"
Funny how she didn't say her relationship OF 6 years.
She wanted to protect the real stuff from media, in the last 6 years.
So if you count the days backward since Midnights release on October 21st 2022 it gives you Octobre 22nd 2016.
Tumblr media
The last time Karlie and Taylor were papped together was at Drake's birthday on Octobre 23rd.
But The Love Blackout was not over on Midnights release day.
Taylor and Karlie were still not papped together at an event (they weren't papped at reputation stadium tour, they just posted a picture together). So Midnights release day should count in our calculation. And if you include that day. It ends exactly on Octobre 23rd 2016.
Tumblr media
Before taking a deep dive into this Love Blackout, let's take a moment to talk about Octobre 2016.
Because A LOT of important stuff happened that month.
Octobre 2016
Octobre 11th 2016:
Taylor goes to diner at the Waverly Inn restaurant with Suki Waterhouse, Cara Delevigne and Dakota Johnson.
Tumblr media
Later that evening, Suki posts a table cloth with : "It's all part of the f*cking story" written on it and a "K". She deletes it not long after. But us Gaylors have all jumped on it already.
Tumblr media
Plus, one of Taylor body guard is papped leaving the restaurant with that Table cloth:
Tumblr media
But what story?? What does it all mean??
Let's look at what happened in the days after this event.
I'm sure Taylor had a plan 😉
Octobre 12 2016:
Taylor goes to the Kings of Leon concert with the same friends and some more.
Tumblr media
It's funny because, it's at this very concert, that Taylor is rumored to have started her relationship with Joe.
Tumblr media
Are you starting to see the "f*cking story" they were talking about??
Soure iwanthermidnightz : https://iwanthermidnightz.tumblr.com/post/615953412601823232/in-conclusion
Octobre 13th 2016:
The next day. On a 13th.
Taylor, Karlie and Serena Williams go out at the Bowery Ballroom.
Yes. Yes, this combination of names is suspicious 🤔
Tumblr media
Back to the 2190 days:
So we have established that counting backward from Midnights release and including Midnigths release day. We have Octobre 23 2016.
This was Drake's birthday party and Taylor attended with Karlie:
Tumblr media
The article was published the next morning
In fact, it's the last time ever that they both were papped at an event together: (Love Blackout)
Tumblr media
Two important Kaylor Lore came from that Party:
Golden tattoos "made your mark on me, a golden tattoo"
The Third Polaroid
If we follow the Love Blackout definition : "A supression of information imposed on the media"
We can stop there, everything makes sense, the song ties back to Karlie, that moment and everyone is happy.
But what if there's more to this?
The Blood Moonlit Implication
corneliastvendor did an incredible find: https://kwyw.tumblr.com/post/711447685996167168?is_related_post=1
(I also use picture of their post here)
Stay with me on that one and I swear this will all make sense!
Plus there's a lot to unpack after this.
In Glitch, there's the lyrics: "Nights are so stary, blood moonlit"
Blood moon is a lunar eclipse.
There is even a bloodmoon the Glitch Official Lyrics Video:
Tumblr media
And when was the last lunar eclipse following Midnights release?
Tumblr media
source: corneliastvendor
On Novembre 8th 2022.
If we count the days backward where does it lead us?
Tumblr media
source: corneliastvendor
It leads to Novembre 9th 2016.
Karlie and Taylor last event that they attended together (except reputation) is Lorde's birthday on Novembre 7th 2016.
On Novembre 7th Taylor posted this picture:
Tumblr media
And Karlie posted the same picture the day after on Novembre 8th:
Tumblr media
It's the last post about them attending an event together (beside reputation).
The presidentatial election also happenened on Novembre 8th 2016, and Trump was elected... (I believe this is important).
So the last post of them at an event together is on Novembre 8th 2016. Wich means that the Love Blackout would have started the day after right?
Exactly 2190 days since the blood moonlit night followingg Midnights release.
And something tells me that this specific date is really important in their story, because here's a screenshot of The Man MV:
Tumblr media
The. Exact. Same. Ring. and pose...
Lorde's birthday, is also the first time ever that Taylor wore the Victora Secret Angel Ring.
Tumblr media
source: tilynation
I think she wore this ring there, knowing that they won't be seen together after as a way of being able to flag Karlie in the future.
The VS angel ring is really important and Taylor wore it at many significant events:
All the making of videos of reputation
The Call It What You Want scene of Miss Americana
On Decembre 4th 2019 (Kissgate anniversary)
So last post together before they disappear on Novembre 8th 2016, same day as the US elections.
This ties back to those lyrics: "I recall late Novembre, slowly I said, holding my breath. You don't need to save me, but would you run away with me? Yes"
Remember that in Miss Americana, it's Karlie who says "Yes".
The Love Blackout:
During that time, after Novembre 8th 2016, Taylor is mostly in London...and so is karlie.
Decembre 2016:
Taylor spends the holiday at her in-laws in St-Louis.
Tumblr media
January 2017:
Taylor is in London.
There's a very interesting entry in her Lover Journal that talks EXACTLY about the Love Blackout:
Tumblr media
"I'm essentially based in London, hiding out trying to protect us from the nasty world that just wants to ruin things. We have been together and no one has found out for 3 monts now"
And it is almost words for words her Lavender Haze Instagram Reel....
(Las time they were papped together, in Octobre 2016, Drake's birthday party, 3 months before)
And who was in England during the exact time frame? Karlie!
Tumblr media
I believe the picture was posted a couple of days after.
But regardless, this is important because look at the Swans.
And now look at the Lover Merch:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plus, Karlie did a very cute post that month with Swarovski Swans jewelery:
Tumblr media
Refering the Eye Theory while she was at it!!!
Also, Taylor said in the Long Pond Studio Session that she went to The Lake District a couple of years ago.
Tumblr media
And in Invisible String we have: "Bold was the waitress on our three year trip Getting lunch down by the lakes. She said I looked like an American singer"
Kaylor anniversary is March 6th 2014. So Jan 2017 is close enough to that anniversary.
Plus, 3 years for Toe would have been in 2019, wich doesn't match the "couple of years" of LPSS...
Jannuary 11th 2017:
Taylor is paped going out of a gym in LA.
It's the first time that she is paped in a couple of months.
Tumblr media
And she wears the VS Angel Ring
source: tilynation
In the reputation secret session she explained how she was overwhelmed by this.
"her thought process was less about herself and more about how she could possibly have a normal relationship when this was her life"
Source: https://www.tumblr.com/screamedsooloud/174932790840/i-have-heard-mixed-interpretations-of-dancing-with
She then went directly to the studio and recorded Dancing With Our Hands Tied
She cried for an hour before recording the song.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, like the song says after the Love Blackout part is that the system is breaking down.
And we had some glimpse of this with the Twitter "glitch" that made Karlie repost some of her old Kaylor post. Or her facebook being hacked...
I truly hope they are able to be free soon, they deserve it.

Book Blurb: In Serena Kaylor's sparkling debut, a homeschooled math genius finds herself out of her element at a theater summer camp and learns that life—and love—can’t be lived by the (text)book. Growing up homeschooled in Berkeley, California, Beatrice Quinn has always dreamed of discovering new mathematical challenges at Oxford University. She always thought the hardest part would be getting in, not convincing her parents to let her go. But while math has always made sense to Beatrice, making friends is a problem she hasn’t been able to solve. Before her parents will send her halfway across the world, she has to prove she won’t spend the next four years hiding in the library. The compromise: the Connecticut Shakespearean Summer Academy and a detailed list of teenage milestones to check off. If Beatrice wants to live out her Oxford dream, she has to survive six weeks in the role of “normal teenager” first. Unfortunately, hearts and hormones don't follow any equations. When she's adopted by a group of eclectic theater kids, and immediately makes an enemy of the popular—and annoyingly gorgeous—British son of the camp’s founders, Beatrice quickly learns that relationships are trickier than calculus. With her future on the line, this girl genius stumbles through illicit parties, double dog dares, and more than her fair share of Shakespeare. But before the final curtain falls, will Beatrice realize there’s more to life than what she can find in the pages of a book?
Review:
A girl who has been homeschooled her entire life and has spent her days dedicated to her projects and her dream of getting into Oxford... and when she does get in her parents wont let her go unless she agrees to go to theatre camp for the summer. Beatrice Quinn has always been socially awkward, in fact its to the point where she doesn’t have friends and spends most of her days alone just working on math and her passions. Her parents are concerned about what will happen to her when she moves all the way to England to go to school by herself and will only agree to let her go if she agrees to go to a theatre summer camp and prove she can socialize, so they give her a list of tasks she has to accomplish to prove to them she has and they’ll let her go. Easy enough right? Except for someone as painfully shy and socially awkward as Beatrice it might not be that simple. Beatrice finds herself in the Connecticut Shakespearean Summer Academy, and where she’ll discover friendship, heart break, and first love, as well as finding the confidence in herself to finally get out of the books and maybe just start living life. I adored Beatrice’s friendships in this book, Nolan and Mia were great friends who supported and helped Bea realize what it means to actually be a friend, they challenged her, helped her, and supported her as she took her first steps. My biggest issue came with Nik, the son of the famous actors who is the epitome of “tease the girl because you like her” except there was no chemistry between them, and the more he bumbled and messed it up the less I liked him. Bea’s first interaction with him ends with him calling her ugly and soon spirals into a competition that states if he wins she has to kiss him. Yes I get that he was “challenging her” and such but honestly, no, it just wasn’t for him. All in all it was a cute story about growing out of your shell and trying new things.
*Thanks Netgalley and St. Martin's Press, Wednesday Books for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

Long Story Short by Serena Kaylor Book Review
ARC kindly provided by the Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
This book, put simply, is why so many introverts despise extroverts (with a burning passion).
I know that's a really weird way to start off a book review but trust me when I say it encapsulates the entire story in a neat, succinct sentence. See, Long Story Short follows Beatrice, an introverted, awkward teenage girl who gets accepted into her dream university, Oxford. Getting in was one thing but getting her parents to let her go is another. They want Bea to get outside of her comfort zone, believing she'd always stay inside her shell so to combat this, they sign her up to a Theatre Camp on the other side of America where she'd get to act and perform in the season's play: Romeo and Juliet.
What could possibly go wrong?
Tumblr media
To prove her parents wrong, Bea agrees and armed with a list her parents made of "normal teenage experiences," she goes into camp where she meets wannabe directors, actors and costume designers. Most strikingly of all, she meets the camp directors' son, Nik. It's hate at first glance as the two bicker and banter about Shakespeare and start Shakespearean quote competitions to find out who knows their Shakespeare the best. As the competition gets more fierce and the play draws closer and closer, Bea starts to realise her conflicting feelings for her enemy and starts to realise that life may be better and more fun when you're not sticking to the book.
Tumblr media
From the very beginning when the proposition of the camp plan between Bea and her parents arose, I was silently staring daggers into the page and silently chastising their opinions. So what if your daughter hasn't had a lot of "normal teenage experiences?" she's only 16… she has the rest of teenage hood ahead of her. I didn't really understand the intense push to urgently mark items off the list. Yes it's great you want to encourage her to get out of her comfort zone but trust me, if this book was real life you would've only caused more of a rift between you all rather than solidifying or strengthening a relationship which apparently was the aim. The fact that Bea was so calm about it all is either a testament to her character or a completely unrealistic portrayal of teenage hood.
But the story had to move forward somehow.
Tumblr media
This idea of pushing the main character out of her comfort zone was reinforced not only by her parents but also her newfound camp mates. Instantly from the start, they were trying to get her to explore new things and experience the theatre camp lifestyle which is all well and good but there is a very fine line between encouraging and pushing a person into things and there were so many instances where that line was blurred. For example, Bea might've wanted to stay inside her cabin instead of hanging out with people but they'd try to drag her out and make her do things outside her comfort zone.
As I said before, this must be a testament to her character that she remained calm about this and didn't lash out or feel insane amounts of anger here. But that was just about the relationships and interactions she had with family and friends.
Romance wise, I loved the banter. Who wouldn't love a banter war where two Shakespeare nerds battle it out in a guess-the-play-the-Shakespeare-quote-is-from game? The banter is what made this book. I loved the subtle digs and the way they basically confessed their love to each other through old English but they were oblivious to it all because it was all just a game. I love the oblivious chemistry trope and I was cheering them on the whole time. Seriously, I would read a spin off book with their banter in a heart beat. I. Was. That. Happy!
Tumblr media
But then the banter died down and we were left with those all-consuming love confessions of "well I actually liked you from the start." I don't know… I felt like we went from cute banter to BOOM love confession with nothing in between. I wanted more subtle pining where Bea comes to terms with her feelings and I wanted more "them" moments where the two would break their walls down and just talk. I wanted more of that. I think it would've made the main romance all that more believable and shippable.
But apart from those aforementioned things, this book was still a solid debut and I'm excited to see the direction Serena Kaylor takes in the future and I'd definitely will read more books from the author soon. There were a few things to polish up on but the foundations were solid for a well-rounded novel. I would still recommend this book to readers but maybe more so in the early-early mid range of YA (maybe 13-16?).
ACTUAL RATING: 3 STARS
