💚 Bruno x Evalina Headcanons 💚

💚 Opposites really do attract. Bruno once thought he’d grow alone, unmarried, without a family of his own. But little did he know what was in store for him when he met Evalina.

💚 She’s an energetic social butterfly and was fairly active in engaging with the community within Encanto— a direct opposite to Bruno’s shy and introverted personality. But they got along pretty well! They both enjoyed each other’s company very much.

💚 She loved listening to Bruno’s stories and always made time to hang out with him after he was finished with his chores for the day. Most of the time, she’d invite him to different spots she found at the forest near the town like lakes, hills, pastures, and other scenic sites.

💚 This little activity allowed Bruno to have peaceful moments far away from the stress of bullies who come after him and how much his mother pressures him as a Madrigal. And they’d spend hours on those “special hiding spots” just talking, or maybe even having a picnic. (One of his most fondest memories was the day they went swimming in the river and jumped off swinging from ropes attached to tall tree branches)

💚 At home, Bruno would write in his journal for hours about everything they did together during the day, and would hope that maybe he’d have the guts to propose to her someday. (This would go on for years before he actually did it)

💚 After long discussions and arrangements between their families, their marriage was finally approved. Alma began treating Evalina as if she was her own, but Alma instilled alot of her ideas of perfection unto her new daughter-in-law.

💚 There were times Evalina would catch other townsfolk berating Bruno and even flat out insulting him— and she just can't let it slide. She wouldn’t hesitate standing up for her husband , and with composure (more like commendable restraint) and wit, she would end that kind of slander on her husband’s name right then and there. (Leaving Bruno with heart eyes in the process lmao)

💚 The amount of times Bruno has witnessed his wife defend him, made him feel more deeply in love with her but at the same time felt ashamed thinking he’d be too cowardly to do the same thing. But Bruno would eventually surprise himself — One day while he was at the market with Evalina, he heard a drunk man whistle at his wife from afar. Bruno can’t exactly explain what had snapped inside of him but before his wife could react, he immediately approached the man (his eyes glowing green with rage) and spat out insult after insult to the man as if he was cursing him. Bruno sounded like an entirely different person that day. He didn't stop until the man eventually ran off, afraid for his life.

💚 At home, Bruno has a tendency for wrapping his arms around Evalina’s waist from behind. It means he wants attention, and he’s not letting go unless she gives him some sweet sweet affection. There were times Eva would stop what she was doing to lovingly tend to her husband’s needs but there were also times she’d feel playful and tease him by ignoring his presence (because she loooves hearing her Bruno whine from all these games she’s playing. Dont worry she makes up for it in bed *winkkk)

💚 Now when Evalina wants attention, she’d play all sorts of tricks. Her favorite trick is distracting Bruno from whatever he’s working on, take something he’s using and hold it above her head. This of course means she’s taking advantage of their height difference to make Bruno on his tippy toes and struggling to reach for his things. And then Evalina would hold Bruno close to her with a smirk or a goofy smile on her face (depending on the mood ;) ).

💚 After becoming babysitters for their little nieces for years now , they decided that maybeeeee it’s time for them to try for a baby. Evalina would love to see a baby Brunito running around the house, but all Bruno wants is a little Evalina (maybe more than one. He always wanted a large family of his own)

💚 During the pregnancy (and finding out they were having triplets) Bruno spent so many nights talking to his wife’s belly and telling his kiddos all the tall tales of his telenovelas. He would always whisper how he’s excited to meet his children. (Despite all the times he gets kicked in the face by his kids from the womb)

💚 On days when Bruno would get really anxious about not living up to expectations or bottling up his emotions, Evalina would be right there to comfort him. She would help him ease down ( giving him massages or running a bath for him. Anything. Until he’s ready to open up.) He would hold on to her and she’d whisper sweet words. Just to reassure him how much he’s loved and deserving he is of every good thing that has happened to him.

💚 There were nights Bruno would slow dance with Eva. They’d sway to the music being played from the town. And in those nights, Bruno would always whisper how much he loves her and their children. And how he could never imagine a life without his soulmate. This has been a tradition between the two of them ever since they got married, it has always been reserved for special occasions or if either of them needs to be comforted and reassured.

💚 Parenthood took a toll on their energy. As much as they love raising their triplets together, all their work just doubled knowing that they also have to shoulder their other responsibilities from ‘before’ they were parents. And frankly, Bruno and Eva had these moments where they were both too tired to do the things they used to do as a couple. (They can't exactly jump in rivers from swinging ropes anymore now 😭) and Bruno had this lingering feeling that he forgot how to be romantic.

💚 Evalina was feeling the same thing but didn't want to burden Bruno with these thoughts because…. They were still okay… right? All their dates were now few and far between. All they ever talk about were their responsibilities and raising their children etc. When Bruno brought the topic up, Evalina would only shake her head and admit that this is what their life is now. But Bruno and Evalina didn’t want to dishearten one other so they each thought of a plan for their upcoming anniversary.

💚 They planned to meet up at their favorite spot again (like old times) on their own. Evalina prepared a picnic on top of their favorite hill overlooking the river. Prepared candles and flowers too and waited for Bruno. He arrived shortly after her and this is where his cute idea was set in motion— with the use of his impeccable acting skills.

💚 He approached the hill pretending to be out of breath, claiming how hard it was to sneak out in the middle of the night without his mother or sisters finding out. Evalina was confused at first but she played along. He then started to reference old events in his words… that were very familiar…as if he was playing out a conversation they had many years ago. She asked what had gotten into him but Bruno never broke character. And that's when it hit her— he wanted to reenact the day they had their first date. ( awwww)

💚 They had a wonderful evening on that hill. Its like as if they were young lovers all over again. And hours passed by as if they were minutes. Bruno presented his anniversary gift: a well-loved journal full to the brim of his unsent letters and writings to Evalina over the years before their marriage. The pages were filled with loving words of passion, his journal entries of their old dates, and all the things he loved about her. Some pages even had drawings and excerpts of his scripts, some even had longer pages from ends being glued together.

💚 They ended the night with Evalina impulsively suggesting they swim in the river again (Without the rope). Running down the hill giggling and trying to undress along the way gave them both a youthful thrill they haven’t experienced in a long time. The water was cold of course but the moment felt all too exciting for them to even care.

Amane Amane Amane why don't YOUUU tell me what YOUUU think about the living Tsukasa having friends?

[blunt tone] He didn't have them. Because, I wouldn't let him.

That's what the authoritative Amane voice says. And, that's a "know" not "think", of course, by the nature of it. But let's extrapolate via Bird voice. *clears throat...*

... okay... but, seriously... I do not think Tsukasa realistically had much time or space for friendships when alive, in any capacity, between his own nature and Amane's. Strangers are competing with both the intensity of Tsukasa's targeted, burning adoration for all things Amane AND — from what we see of Amane as Hanako — a very, VERY clingy and jealous older brother. That's just not much room for someone to exist in, so the thought of a proper friendship with the boys is so difficult to fathom.

We'll go through it procedurally though. Starting with Tsukasa! Who, I honestly think is such a straightforward case: I do not think that Tsukasa was ever interested enough in anyone to pursue them as a friend. His pervasive love for Amane seems to preoccupy him so wholly at the tender age of 4, and this age is when he gets displaced from (what I believe is) all chances at normalcy, due to sacrificing himself to the well-god. Once Tsukasa has experience at the red house, I think this affects him so much psychologically, that there's no walking it back. (Hehe... it feels silly to link my posts to you, but, for the sake of other people reading this, here's me rambling about Tsukasa's psyche upon his return from the Red House.)

So, at age 4, Tsukasa makes the decision to sacrifice himself, and then he undergoes an unknowable amount of time living in a cursed house outside of linear time/space, and then he returns home to eagerly meet his death at the hands of Amane, inevitably, 9 years later. And potentially, during those 9 years, Tsukasa is a rogue, wish-granting agent running around in his fused-human-kami body. For a kid who was already absent-minded and a bit clumsy and strange, and perhaps was always going to struggle making friends meaningfully... I think the Red House experience condemned Tsukasa's future possibility for friendships. But... also, further than that, even if there wasn't anything "wrong" (abnormal, off-putting, alienating) about Tsukasa, where is his motivation for closeness with others? ... if he believes he is going to be killed by Amane's hand, and eagerly awaits this, and if he wants to know "the Amane I don't know"... This intrinsically is someone not thinking about their future in society, with a job and friends and potential partners etc. This is someone just thinking about, their twin brother, and their death with their twin brother. Period.

Even if I factor in the fact that Tsukasa may potentially NOT have his Red House memories (just to cover my bases) this doesn't change enough for me. I still think what we have to infer how Tsukasa behaved in the past, based on his yorishiro self, doesn't paint a very socially-integrated picture! PP arc Tsukasa, and the general tenor of how he interacts with the Broadcast Club, feels like... an absentminded little fella, as liable as to get distracted with interacting with someone as he is a butterfly. I think AidaIro make jokes about Tsukasa totally ignoring [viewer] on kiss day for a reason ww, I think, he can't freaking retain interest... I think he's fading in & out of things, existing from moment-to-moment, stimuli-to-stimuli. Endearingly absentminded... like, an actual 4 year old! Or, a little kitten, chasing what lunges into view.

I often think yorishiro Tsukasa is so reflective of his 4 year old self, due to ah, functionally being regressed by the sheer euphoria of being Amane's yorishiro. Maybe there are other reasons why he is like that [UHH-WINKKK!] but I think the simplest one is that he feels so dang GOOD due to undeniably being Amane's most precious belonging eternally bound to him until now and forever- *inhales gasp of breath* that, Tsukasa has been reduced to being toddler-adjacent in mannerisms. His insides go brrr and all that jazz. Of course, if there's anyone that believes in Tsukasa being clever and capable, it's Us, so I'm not discrediting Tsukasa as someone who lacks complexity. Rather, I think he's also capable of being quite simple, as a result of his enlightened blissfulness! That he exudes the sheer openness of a child, completely unthreatened by everyone and anyone. He will play with whoever, he is open to any interaction. It's all so interchangeable to him... popping bubble wrap, playing with Mitsuba on the beach, eating a cupcake, asking to kiss Sakura, squeezing a little gooey eyeball thing. It's all so equally on-the-table... which tells me it's all equally neutral... which tells me, no one is especially drastically more or less interesting to Tsukasa. All the same!

... in the way a 4 yo is undiscerning! He's just open to holding hands and being carried around by Kou! Or not! It's fine!! It's all fine. It's as fine as finding a really cool marble. Is that friendship...? I mean, what 4 yo has friends, aha? In the way we grown-ups think of them. At that age, you're not even in school yet, and any other kid you've known and are friendly with is likely just an amicable child of a friend of your parent, a cousin, etc. (brother is a very special case here, don't coun't him.)

So, I imagine that after returning from the Red House, Tsukasa's demeanor was this open, and yet, easily distracted, towards others. It paints a funny picture... of a kid who you could have a fine interaction with on the sandbox, but, just the same, one that you'll never build a rapport beyond both liking dinosaurs or something? Best case scenario, too. Cuz this is assuming that Tsukasa wasn't perceived as annoying or strange and unsettling enough to discourage the other child engaging with... and, beyond that, it needs to be factored in that wherever Tsukasa was, Amane likely wasn't far away — and you just can't... compete with Tsukasa's interest in Amane. To Tsukasa, Amane is one million BILLION times more interesting than anything ever...

Speaking of Amane. Onto him. Who, IMO, would be the real roadblock to Tsukasa having friends. *severe voice*

I need to start with this post I made. Truth be told when I made this post, I was reconciling with the fact that I made all these compilations with the intention of writing some mega essay about Tsukasa/Nene similarities AND the frame of reference DMLD provides to their dynamics AND how this further threads Amane's possessiveness over Nene potentially informing his possessiveness on Tsukasa — but there was literally no sane way to write it and no one was going to read my post anyway so I just made this. It was functionally me ripping my hair out and crying hysterically and laughing and dying and making a shitpost about it. But, for this ask, I'll go ahead and go into the last couple images/concluding thoughts... which is Amane telling Nene she doesn't need anyone else, because she has him.

this guy... ooh this fucking guy... not a day goes by where I'm not angry at this guy... yoouuuu rat... you sicken me... *amane kinnie voice*

You could make a compendium of Amane, also known as the criminal "Hanako-kun", being a jealous, fussy little baby who intercepts Nene from moments of closeness with Kou. He is often fussy, bratty, and petulant when having to cede any amount of relevance in Nene's mind to Kou, even platonically. It doesn't matter if functionally, Nene is being no more intimate with Kou than Amane was with Tsukasa at times, even; Amane is jealous about it, and is trying to interfere.

It also doesn't matter if Nene is showing an appropriate amount of concern for her friend here. The events of the Tanabata chapters chase the Hell of Mirrors/Mitsuba debacle, which Kou is greatly troubled by. Nene's brooding over Kou isn't coming from nowhere, and yet, it bothers Amane so much, he pitches many fits... I'm glad Akane describes him as "sulking"... so accurate. Pouting about it all!!

This expression says everything, honestly... Everything Amane says/does in this chapter is soo unflattering! His resistance and dislike of this all is painfully unsubtle. He's clinging and cloying onto Nene incessantly, physically, like she is a stuffed toy that he doesn't want another kid to hold onto for too long. He's buzzing around, oscillating wildly between grasping Nene and saying he was lonely too, pranking her in retaliation for his insecurities, obstructing the plan to cheer Kou up, refusing to let Akane so much as MENTION Kou's feelings for Nene... Noooot a good look for a guy.

this behavior is something I'd expect from an overly territorial wild animal...

Oh but the degree of Amane's petulance is incredible, because it goes beyond all rational justification... Mmmaybe, if you REALLY wanted to extend yourself to him here, you could sympathize with how Kou IS a boy with a crush on Nene that is living, chivalrous, destined to grow up into an ikeman, literally related to Nene's initial crush, which, are all things Amane would struggle to compete with. As the dead ghost of a murderer, in this shrimpy little bug-eyed body, okay, maybe he's fighting for what little purchase he can get, within Nene's life.

Yet... it's not even just Kou. Amane wants to be relevant in Nene's THOUGHTS, her daydreams — after all, the line "you have me" is said before Nene as even met Kou! He does not like it when Nene fantasies about being clamored for by throngs of handsome guys... Don't want Nene to be preoccupied with anything else. Kou can't even relay to him that Nene will be too busy for toilet-cleaning duty without being inundated with a flood of NANDE NANDE NANDE NANDE- as if it can't just be enough that a girl is, busy. Ironic that he's like this while Nene and Kou are attempting such a sincere, heartfelt gesture for him. Heck, Nene can't even just have dreams, about, her hamster.

That's a bit much, isn't it? Mmh, and yet, I think it's so telling of Amane that he'd rather you have a nightmare about him, because it would mean it was... about him.

Quite a psyche you have there, Amane...

Sorry to cram so many images in here, but I hope I'm getting my point across. By now, it's surely sinking in "gee, Amane really IS a possessive person" — it better be, at least!! I mean, I know we think After School Hanako-kun is cute, and these are comedic little vignettes, but I do think it interplays seamlessly with the canon. The guy saying this,

is going to go on to say this, in the main series,

and that is no coincidence.

... phewww... OK. I have to roll out all these details/caps to get to the meat of the matter: that Amane is a possessive person! At his very core...! Being close to him seems to come packaged with him having a sense of entitlement over your very life. I mean, this is the guy locking Nene up in a cage in PP, literally imprisoning her in a cell! This is the kind of behavior Nene is netting due to being someone he loves very dearly right now. (Actually, here's one more relevant post musing about the degree of Nene's lack autonomy...)

So... [I am frazzled, frantic, manic, my gakuran jacket is unbuttoned a bit, my hat is askew] logically... [my little creepy gold eyes are darting from side to side] ... Tsukasa, as the living Amane's closest, most precious person that he had an intimate relationship with... experienced some of this possessive behavior.

How much? It's, impossible to say, but, I find it a bit suspicious that we've had no hints of Amane and Tsukasa having any relationships outside of each other, given Amane's aforementioned behavior. For someone so very incessantly jealous, clingy, touchy, and possessive of the girl he loves... to the point of actively interfering with her closeness with other people... Hm, it's almost too convenient that Tsukasa had no other friends. Lol.

Sure, there's a lot we just can't say anything about, with these two... We have no idea how much Tsukasa was isolated due to his family and community, or how much he was seen as a pariah in the town/school/etc. But, I don't think it'd hurt to casts suspicions on this isolation potentially being fostered? Stoked...? by the guy who is going to kill them both in a passion ww. I meeean~~ even the fact that living Amane uses the lunar rock as his proxy for his feelings for Tsukasa — and what is that lunar rock!? that's right — Amane's prized possession! Such an appropriate description, especially knowing that (chronologically) Tsukasa is going to literally become Amane's precious, guarded object! The yorishiro fate of Tsukasa says soo much, doesn't it...

Whatever Amane did, said, expressed towards/at Tsukasa, it was potentially selfish and direct, and potentially even moreso than he does to Nene really, because... er, does one have to put on airs? Around their twin brother...? This is why I say I worry about Tsukasa ww... Maybe he didn't have all the padding of Amane's embarrassment and flustering over a hot girl he just met... Maybe the sheer familiarity of being born with Tsukasa allowed Amane to be more huffy, short, petulant, and blunt with his feelings. Was it as simple as Amane getting fussy and demanding a handful of times at age 5, for Tsukasa to go "okay!" and completely prioritize him? Whooo knows... it could be anythinggg!!!

sigh, and, obligatory moment where I have to say, despite all that I'm saying, I'm NOT trying to implicate "abuse" between Tsukasa/Amane; I have no interest in categorizing them as "who abused who" snzzzzz boring boring boring!!! [me, Amane, leaning on my desk dramatically] what a boring way to see things... Even if I was right and Amane was possessive and controlling of Tsukasa's life... please refer to my opening paragraphs about how Tsukasa is totally obsessed with Amane as well & has 0 motivation to pursue outside of him... and there you go.

A mutual case of obsession, lalala... I want to believe they didn't want other friends, either of them. They didn't want them, didn't have them, didn't attempt to make them, didn't yearn for them. And then they died!

I like to think of them as an instance of two people who never wanted to seek outside of one another, who completely enabled this mutual obsession. Neither Amane nor Tsukasa were going to prompt the other into seeking new company. They are each other's comfort zone sooo hard... I like to think this is why they are like, abysmal socially as ghosts, like, these are two kittens who never socialized properly with anything else lol.
