So, I have been engaging in an interesting discussion about RWBY’s handling of Ironwood, prosthetic and more recently and it gave me a bit of a realization. 

One of the things critiqued was that Ironwood scorched up his arm/replaced it being used as a sign he was sacrificing more of his humanity. I can certainly understand that take but then I started ruminated on other facets of Atlas and the show overall. 

Like how when Yang lost her arm she wasn’t thrilled to receive the prosthetic because it seemed like everyone was just pressuring her to be OK and jump right back into the fight again. 

How Ironwood admires Salem’s seeming lack of humanity, her lack of fear, attachments and tries to emulate what he sees as her strength by being increasingly ruthless and willing to sacrifice ‘anything’.  

Or how the Ace-Ops were never given time to grieve or even granted the ability to admit they cared for Tortuga. Instead their ‘missing part’ was just forcefully replaced with Marrow. 

Plus how rather than letting Winter recover in anyway shape or form he just shoved her into a mobility aid. Not because he wanted to help her, but because she was his soldier and he needed to use her. 

What I am getting from it, thematically speaking, is less about the mechanical side of things. And far more about being denied or denying one’s one pain, grief and healing. 

The Ace-Ops can’t care about Tortuga, Yang has to start fighting again, Winter is not allowed to rest, Ironwood does not give himself time to heal. 

If something is causing a problem, be it emotions, a limb, or another person, Ironwood/Atlas’s ideology demands it be cut out and replaced by force. 

That’s what I think they were going for at least.

I feel like RWBY benefits from having areas in its plot where pasts aren't as explored or aspects of the worldbuilding aren't beating us over the head. The main story about Ruby Rose's journey could end with RWBY as a whole going back to fill those voids with various installments.

I know that franchises and such have been a hot button topic these days but only because of what I like to call "The Hand of the Corporate."

Basically, we know that this or that spinoff being announced is more for profit than because some up and coming director pursued a creative vision for XYZ Marvel/Star Wars Character. It's something Andor avoided and reset the bar for.

With RWBY, there's a lot more creative control with an emphasis on character driving the plot first and foremost. Keep that energy up and we could get a story about Harriet's bond with Clover as well as whoever Tortuga was. Her attitude really makes one wonder who she is.

Hell, a story about Ironwood THAT DOES NOT WHITEWASH HIS LESSER ASPECTS rising through the ranks and becoming indoctrinated into the militant mindset would led to some criticizing in good faith to appreciate his arc more.

Basically, RWBY becoming too successful to end the brand full stop might not be a bad thing so long as we reach a conclusion for the titular heroines.

What would the cast of Antares have as their Epithets if they were transported to the world of Epithet Erased? It doesn't have to be associated with their semblance. It can be a new power entirely.

ooo this one is fun! I ended up grabbing a lot of characters because honestly the dynamic is entirely up to interpretation, so I'm just going to give the characters and their epithets, I think!

Also on a lot of these, I actually decided by just rolling random word generators a whole bunch of times until something jumped out as interesting or distinctive to tie to a character, I'll be honest. It made it a lot more fun, having that randomised element rather than specifically worrying about tying things in. A lot of these are based really on vibes, or on the fun that could come from the secondary meanings of words, or how the powers could work.

Also Spanish for “turtle”. As in the Tortoise part of the Aesop “The Tortoise and the Hare”.

Maybe he was Harriet's partner/competitive rival or something. Given he was replaced (possibly dead, given she put him in the same category as Winter replacing Clover), she might not have taken it well, and her generally assholery is related to it, even if she doesn't want to admit or face that fact.

What I love about the no one is replaceable outburst is Oscar. The new member of team JNOR.

Because he didn't replace Pyrrha. JNR chose to include Oscar in their team dynamic. They helped to train him up. They love him for him and not what he can do for them or bring to the team. It was never about filling the gap Pyrrha left. It was about helping and including a friend.

They never wanted to replace Pyrrha and they haven't tried to. They have consitantly tried to honour her and what she would have wanted.

They didn't have to pull Oscar into their team dynamic. They could have left him to Qrow. Afterall Qrow was willing to take on that role. But instead, they made the choice to help Oscar. To befriend him. To give him a chance to be part of their team.

But they only did that after three seasons worth of coming to terms with, and gaining closure over losing Pyrrha. They could not pull him into their dynamic while still mourning.

Because it would feel like they were replacing her.

It was only after we saw them outside Pyrrhas monunent, that the dynamic with Oscar began to change.

They were finally ready to move forward.

He's not Pyrrja.

To them he's not even Pyrrha's replacement.

He's Oscar.

The team mate they chose to include. That they were ready to include.

And since they did that, Oscar said it himself - he finally felt like part of the team. They never made him feel like an outsider.

And honestly, I bet Pyrrha would have loved Oscar just as much as her teammates do.

I love everyone commenting on Harriet’s line on Tortuga and them being the Tortoise to her Hare.

But consider that Tortuga, if following the allusion, has a Semblance that slows things, in contrast to Hare’s speed. And who else has a Semblance like that, who can slow or even stop things?

Marrow didn’t just take Tortuga’s spot. He took their specific role.

Would you ever make Kids for Jaune and his male ships? Like a rwbaby for Jaune x Ren or Jaune x Oscar or Jaune x Whitley?(I think that's the all the ones you do).

Okay so I do a few more

so for male ships theres, Ren, Oscar, Whitley, Scarlet, Lewis (Aged Up cuz he'd have stayed in the ever after with Jaune) there's also Tortuga who I made a pretty boy.

There is potentially one more who I'm undecided on, Ivori of team FNKI...

I find myself debating this every time I think of fun gay ships.

Also non-RWBY models include Astolfo (Fate Series), Venti (Genshin Impact), Felix (ReZero), Hideri (Blend-S) and potentially Najimi (Komi Can't Communicate/ though gender is ambiguous)

I would say no though because I already have a lot of RWBabies to potentially make. But also most have a girl friend who I could see carrying said baby so it would just be that that RWBaby would have one more dad...

Though that does mean I have to potentially make a RWBaby between Jaune and Nora.

Don’t think about how Harriet, who has done her best to remain stoic until this point, collapses to the floor sobbing when she sees Cinder’s expectant face as Clover rushes over to comfort her.

Don’t think about Ironwood and Rhodes pulling Cinder aside as the Ace Ops grieve while they explain to her Tortuga’s fate and the dangers of being a Huntsman.

Don’t think about Cinder resolving herself to become strong enough that her friends and family never have to worry about her dying in the field.

Don’t think about Tortuga saying they’ll wait for Cinder to be old enough to join their squad and officially become partners, promising to show her the ropes.

We’re all fairly certain at this point that Tortuga, as Harriet’s partner, would’ve had a slowing/stopping semblance and would’ve held a resemblance to/weapon denoting a tortoise, but I’d like to go one step beyond that.

We know that Marrow was handpicked to replace Tortuga, as per Ironwood’s obsessive fascination with complementary semblances, but I’d also like to make the leap to the notion that Tortuga would’ve also been a Faunus.

James isn’t stupid; he knows how his elite squad must look to Mantle and Other Outsiders. Having Marrow there is an acknowledgment of the Faunus and, by extension, Mantle while having to make no structural changes to a system that clearly benefits him and the people he actually cares about. Marrow’s placement is both a platitude reassurance that Atlas is Aware Of Them and that They Have A Representative On The Team (which Mantle has obviously seen right through), and is also Proof that if one simple works Hard Enough™ one might attain such a LoFtY pOsItIoN. (Indeed, this notion is furthered by making Neon Katt a literal poster child for Atlas Academy.)

Marrow is simultaneously meant to be a placating force and someone to aspire to. So why would this have started with just HIM? My answer: It wouldn’t have. Tortuga was likely the token Faunus on this team before Marrow, providing the same perception of acceptance while having to do nothing beyond lip service. Ironwood probably correctly read the tension between Atlas and Mantle’s White Fang faction (or wider, the entire Faunus population), and incorrectly decided that placing a Faunus on his highest team would be good enough. After all, one out of five is better than none out of five, right?
